Friends at Rocka On September 12, 2015, Hunter Key Club, several Key Clubbers from Division 11, and two Kiwanians volunteered with Friends at the Rockaways to help families who were still suffering from Hurricane Sandy. Although the hurricane struck NYC three years ago, many homes are still recovering from the damages of Hurricane Sandy.

When we arrived, we immediately put on goggles and masks, grabbed a sander, and started sanding the rough spots on the walls. After sanding, we applied mud onto the drywalls with a knife and a mud pan. We also used a drill to sink screws onto the sides of the drywalls. This ensured that the walls would stay secure.

aways I really enjoyed doing all these tasks because I knew that I was helping a family fix the basement that was ruined by Hurricane Sandy. It was also satisfying to assist the worker in charge because she usually works on the house alone. At the end of the day, I was glad that I had made a difference, no matter how big or small, in someone else's life. By: Crystal Liu//Vice-President

I was really excited for Wipeout Run because I had seen it from the hit TV show, and who doesn’t love ginormous obstacle courses?! For most of the day, Key Clubbers were helping out at race registration: checking runners in, assigning bib numbers, and handing out t-shirts. This wasn’t the most exciting job of the day, but I was grateful to be inside a tent noon came and the sun hit. For the second half of the day, we were driven out to the actual course! We were stationed at the Wrecking Balls! If you aren’t familiar with the event, Wrecking Balls is an obstacle with two big red balls (think super oversized yoga balls) hanging from a contraption that continuously turns in circles. Timing was key here, and quite a few people got knocked off the floating foam tubes by the balls.

Although I did get splashed, this was the most unique expeence I’ve had volunteering at a 5K thus far, because where else are you going to see people crawl along big pool noodles?! The commentator was hilarious, screaming BIG RED BALLS every time someone fell into the tank of water. He also made jokes about people getting really close with the tubing when people started crawling across hype!!). Overall, I had a lot of fun at Wipeout Run, and I ook forward to being able to run the 5K next year!

Governor’s Project: Hunger

This year, Governor Alexis Warren has chosen hunger as the Governor’s Project. Hunger affects more people around you than you might know. Hunter is not only in “third world countries” or “the projects.” It is happening right now right in your backyard. To begin, she urges you to volunteer at your local food bank. If we can raise $10,000 for the Giving circle, we will be able to purchase a farm in Uganda and have it named “New York District Key Club Farm.”

The Thirst Project

“Today, we travel the country to middle schools, high schools and college campuses speaking to people our age to educate students about the global water crisis, and challenge them to take action to end it. When we leave, students are equipped to do their own fundraisers and make a real impact on the issue. In just seven years, we’ve raised over $8 Million and funded projects to provide over 280,000 people with safe, clean water! The need is great though. We can no longer ignore the #1 global killer of children. Our goal with Thirst Project is to provide safe, clean water and sanitation to the entire nation of Swaziland by 2022. With your help, we can give water. With your help, we can give life. “
