REACHING YOUR FULL POTENTIAL: Releasing Loyalty to Broken Systems
by Kim Fletcher, Life Coach, Speaker, Author
Sitting on a lake-front porch yesterday with one of my best friends from Rochester, NY, she and I were reminded of a time we shared in 2012. I had traveled to spend the Easter season with she and her family.
Both entrepreneurs and both women of faith, we have no shortage of creative ideas and insights when we interact. This one particular visit had been no exception. In fact, as we sipped our coffee yesterday, I remembered that we had taken notes during our time. A quick search actually located those very notes. Back in 2012, my friend was exploring a new business idea. After spending many years in the corporate world, only to have layoffs play havoc with her financial future, she was looking at ways to be more in the driver’s seat of her destiny. This launched a most interesting morning. While sitting at her dining room table having coffee (we do that a lot!), I spotted the RocLife newspaper. The cover story on April 6, 2012 was titled Guys and Freedom. I quickly lost interest when I realized the article was about a country music group, because that genre of music has never interested me, but my friend insisted we check it out. Rascal Flats went on in the article to explain how they had almost ended their group when they realized that they had drifted far from their original vision and desired professional path. I can still distinctly remember several key points that emerged from their insights which felt custom tailored for our conversation that Good Friday. My friend was challenged by whether to go back to work for another employer or take the leap of business ownership. She realized she was navigating a critical life transition.
Many of my coaching clients have come to me at similar points of transition, willing to invest in coaching because they recognize that some decisions have the power to (re)shape your entire future.
This article held deep wells of wisdom for my friend in her search that day. We were reminded yesterday that our last two years were indeed impacted by what we read that day; therefore, I decided to pass along the timeless insights. Use them to coach yourself to freedom today. • The following points were paraphrased from that article back in 2012 as Rascal Flats members shared their struggles:
• They first shared that they became aware that they had failed to function as a TEAM.
• This lack of TEAM AWARENESS began to erode their communication with each other. • This critical lack of COMMUNCIATION positioned them to release more and more control to their managers, allowing
pg 6 | Sophie Woman’s Magazine | August 2014
others to make key decisions for them as they became disengaged from the process.
The group then went on to share how these mistakes ultimately culminated in the awareness that CHANGE was now desperately needed. They called it a true AWAKENING. Here is where the rest of the article got exciting for me. Their AWAKENING was the CATALYST for a renewal of TEAM. They shared how they went on to CONCEIVE and RECORD a new project… a process which ultimately required the following: • Renewed vision
• The intimacy of creation
• Action to actually connect the vision to the process and give birth to a new project.
The group shared in closing how this process that could have ended in disaster for their group actually became the AWAKENING that allowed them to re-cement their collective commitment to each other and to the vision. They described the outcome as a “New Found Freedom”. Rascal Flats, RocLife, 6 April 2012 This is how I summed the article up for myself that day: We need to stop having so much loyalty to broken systems. In other words, we need the insight to admit when life is just not working and the humility to seek out support systems that will guide us back on track… or allow us to brave a brand new path as a pioneer. One of my mentors once said, “You can learn one of two ways… your own mistakes or the mistakes of others.” Judy Jacobs
Make this personal. Ask yourself if there is any area of your personal or professional life that feels like you have lost control or let go of the reins. Then take that area and sift it through the timeless wisdom found in the insights I excavated out of that Rochester newspaper two years ago. You might be holding buried treasure in your hands that holds the power to impact a decision, direction or process you are moving toward. Enjoy and please share your successes with me along the way!
As a Life Coach of global impact, Kim would love to share these principles and more with your group or organization, with topics ranging from identity/ goals/vision to developing the leader within. How could your organization be transformed today by identifying and revising broken systems? Kim would also love to hear your life and leadership impact stories. Sophisticated Women... Take A Stand
By Nicole Greer, PPCC Founder and Principle Coach at Vibrant Coaching
Pretend for a moment that you are standing in front of a closed door to a room where ten of your closest friends await your arrival. These friends know you intimately. They know what you believe in. They know your habits. They know your human traits such as personality, character, and the behaviors you’ve learned over a lifetime. Here’s the caveat, there is only one thing they do not know, your name. Since they do not know your name, they call you by an adjective that best describes you or a noun that defines what you stand for. A powerful coaching question... What do they call you when you walk in the door? The answer might be resilient, wise, courageous, knowledgable or caring. Or perhaps they see a fighter, a caretaker, or a teacher. Stop and do this exercise. Really...go ahead think about this... Do it. Why do this? Because what the world needs is women who understand and take ownership of their ability to influence those around them, their community, and ultimately the world. I experienced this exercise in my coaching training over 7 years ago. My revelation was that I have the innate ability to bring energy into the room. The feedback I received was that I was “vibrant”. As I shared this insight with my colleagues, they agreed and implored me to own my energy in a way that others would benefit. That is the day that I knew I was responsible, don’t miss that... RESPONSIBLE...for caring for and encouraging others to live with vibrancy. In essence, I must (HELLO... it’s not optional) that I use my own energy to shed light so others can live a vibrant life. And now, I take a stand for living a vibrant life, one pulsating with energy and purpose. Taking a stand is drawing attention to an effort, a cause, a mission or a vision that is vital in the world. Throughout history, many women have taken a stand for their beliefs and set an example for us. Mother Teresa took a stand for the dignity of the dying in the streets of Calcutta. Susan B. Anthony took a stand for women’s rights. Rosa Parks took a stand for equal rights. Princess Diana took a stand for eliminating land mines. Oprah took a stand for the education of young women in Africa. These women came from all parts of the world with varying backgrounds of education, culture, and financial
pg 8 | Sophie Woman’s Magazine | August 2014
resources however, there is one thread they hold in common. These women took a stand. “How do I take a stand?”, you ask. Taking a stand requires action. You must move toward the word that defines you. For example, consider Jennifer. She’s just turned 45 years old. She’s raised children, supported her husband, and served all the organizations that impact their world like serving PTA and the trade association that supports her husband’s vocation. But at this juncture in her life she knows deep inside that there is more she could do. And secretly in her heart, she desires to do more. From the outside looking in, she looks successful and well meaning friends suggest she can sit back and be content with how life worked out. But don’t miss this, she is only 45 years old. She has perhaps another 45 years to take a stand! Jennifer did this exercise and found out her ‘word’ was TRANSFORMATION. In every situation Jennifer touches, she transforms the environment. Whether she’s serving her child’s school or her husband’s business, she is able to innovate and use creativity to shift the environment. Her mere presence combined with the application of her gifts of problem solving, networking and organizing are powerful. Her history informs her that she loves working with people and after a bit more self-reflection through her life’s work she clearly sees that she loves working with seniors. So, what has Jennifer taken a stand for? She’s taken a stand for senior’s transformation into assisted living. She’s taken action to learn all about the senior experience doing informational interviews, signing up for classes about senior care and even she’s choosing to start a business that will give senior’s and their families a powerful process to move from independent living to assisted living that allows seniors to feel heard, empowered, and loved. Clearly, the world has need of Jennifer. So, what is the one word that identifies where your energy needs to flow? How will you take a stand? Take a stand. Let’s get started.

Front Porch The
coming on – We are like molecular gases in the atmosphere… Source: physorg.co by Judy Smith
OK....if you have a Psycho degree maybe you understand that. However, if you are but a plain old friend like myself, well, I have got some things to say. First of all, I can tell you that most of my friends are not “models”. If they were, there would not be any need for conversation about how everything sags as we get older. May I say with complete intellectual authority, how that proves the theory of gravity. Did they say “usual paradigmatic approaches”? Well I might not know exactly what that means but I do know there is nothing “usual” about my friends at all. Everyone of them is fabulous beyond compare. One thing they might have got right is sometimes friendships happen under the most unusual circumstances like “colliding into each other”. I have literally just run into someone in the oddest places and just become best friends at once. That is not always the case though, like the time I backed into a wall because I thought this man was being so friendly waving bye to me, only to find out he was waving for me to stop....before I hit the wall. Then there is the part of “kinetic theory of gases”. I don’t know what you are thinking about your friends when I hear that but I think it might be the same thing I am thinking! Eleanor Roosevelt said “Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart”.
S
itting on a friends porch, drinking iced tea.... well, it is just good. All of it. The porch, the sweet tea and most of all the friend. I am so blessed to have such good friends. My friends and I can converse on many different intellectual topics at one time such as growing old, husbands, other friends, even politics, if we so desire. This got me thinking about true friends and how much they really know about each other. Did you know there are studies that go on all the time about friendship. One of those studies resulted in this observation:
The Science of Friendship
The many factors that influence an individual’s fate to meet an acquaintance and decide to become a friend are impossible to capture, but physicists have done it anyway and “with near precision”. “The idea behind our model, though simple, is different from the usual paradigmatic approaches,” Gonzalez told PhysOrg.com. “We consider a system of mobile agents (students), which at the beginning have no acquaintances; by moving in a continuous space they collide with each other, forming their friendships.” Using physical science to understand human interactions? Well, it was Social Statistics that guided the development of the kinetic theory of gases. I’m not sure what that means – but I feel a poem
I cherish my friends with all my heart and thank the Lord for them. They laugh with me and they cry with me and they love me enough to tell me the truth when I need to hear it. Best of all, they pray for me and with me. Truly, I hope you have friends like that. There is no way to end this article though, without me telling you about my best friend on earth and that is my husband. He is the best friend ever. Yet there is another best friend that is out of this world and His name is Jesus. Do you know this friend of mine? If not, I would like to tell you about Him sometime. Blessings, love and laughter to all!
Friends are like bras... close to the heart and always there for support! www.sophiewomansmagazine.com | pg 11
A Time to Laugh:
Making room for humor as parents of teens by Jackie E. Perry, MS, LPCS, NCC When was the last time you laughed, I mean belly laughed, with your teenager? Often times we parents of teens have a hard time taking off our commander cap and putting on our clown nose. After all, the stress associated with life during this season makes it difficult to make room for humor. But, as Solomon wrote in the book of Ecclesiastes, there is indeed, a “time to laugh.” (Ec. 3:4) I do think a few more guffaws could certainly benefit my family as we journey through life together. Not surprisingly, scientific research confirms that “a joyful heart [really] is good medicine” (Pr. 17:22) Laughter reduces stress hormones, boosts our immune system, triggers the release of endorphins which make us feel good and increases our productivity by promoting creativity and a clear mind. As if that is not enough, laughing with other people has been proven to strengthen social bonds. Interestingly, the benefits that come from group laughter have led to the development of a new fitness craze called laughing yoga. This group workout guides people through a series of laughter and breathing exercises designed to relieve stress and boost feelings of happiness. According to one website (www.laughteryoga.org), laughter clubs are popping up all over the place. There are over 400 in the US alone and over 6000 worldwide! While the idea of a laughing club makes this chuckle –loving momma a bit curious, a part of me wants to just laugh at the whole idea! Of course, I agree with the emotional and physical benefits of laughter, but I think most of us with kids have plenty of raw material at home. In no way am I endorsing or encouraging sarcastic laughter or malicious mockery. Instead, I think if we lightened up just a bit, we may find some good humor in many of the things that initially make us want to lash out or lecture. Perhaps, the wisest thing we can do at times is just laugh. Teenagers can be very, very funny. Yes, there remarks are often immature, impulsive and often completely unnecessary. Nonetheless, the dry humor or wit my kids can come up with (often, at the wrong times) is often hilarious. If I can’t let myself laugh at some of their shenanigans, I might find myself paying a laughter yogi to help me get what I could have experienced in my day to day relationship with my teenagers! I believe making room for humor begins with a conscious decision to not take everything so seriously and to just let some things go. There are certainly problems in our families that require us to be stern and steady. But, there are many more times when the best thing we can do is bless our teens with a humor-filled reaction or response. My husband did this so well a few years
pg 12 | Sophie Woman’s Magazine | August 2014
ago when one of our teenagers accidentally broke a pedal and damaged the chain on a rental bike we were using to tour a city. We were miles from the drop off point and completely exhausted from riding all over town when this happened. None of us will ever forget my husband’s surprisingly silly way of handling it. Instead of getting angry he traded bikes with our son and acted like he was the lucky one for getting to scoot instead of pedal his bike back to the kiosk. Instantly, the mood lightened among us and we all laughed uncontrollably as he bragged about his amazing scooter. That moment continues to remind me of how our willingness to laugh in the midst of an unalterable situation often relieves the tension while it unites a family. Like those who attend a laughter club, parents can also be intentional about scheduling activities that promote joy and laughter in the home. Playing games, watching movies or even learning something new and creative together can often lead to a lot of chuckling. And, if and when the laughter crosses the line, a parent’s willingness to humbly apologize or firmly protect another sets an example of how laughter should never be used to wound others. The stress we are all under these days is very real. I am forever on the go and so are my kids. If all I do is deliver commando orders when our paths cross, they will reflexively avoid me instead of approaching me. I can’t easily coach or consult a kid who stays away. Not only that, I miss out on the laughter and joy they give me through their unique perspectives and takes on life. If we can learn to be loving leaders willing to laugh with our kids, perhaps we can all experience the multiple benefits from the people we love most.

Born To Be Wild: Part 1 by Gwen Smith
Today’s Truth
…Let us also lay aside every weight, and sin, which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. (Hebrews 12:1)
endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God… Lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.” (Hebrews 12:1-2,12,13, ESV)
Friend to Friend
Let’s Pray
Both his stature and demeanor were unimpressive to elite breeders. He was exercised with harsh tactics, under cruel restrictions and publicly dismissed by a professionally acclaimed trainer. Eventually the horse, Seabiscuit, became a wild, bitter, and angry animal that was considered worthless to the racing world and was sold for a very small price. The new owner, a wealthy auto salesman, hired an experienced trainer to work with the racehorse… a man who others would no longer hire… a man who, like the horse, had been beaten up by life a bit. This new trainer had his hands chock full of rebellion with the stallion, but he patiently and painstakingly trained him as best he could. He watched closely as the small horse raced without heart on the track, and soon identified a major problem.
“They’ve got him so screwed up running in a circle, he’s forgotten what he was born to do. He just needs to learn how to be a horse again.” So, in an effort to help the horse remember how to be a horse, the trainer had the jockey run him in open grassy fields. They took the horse back to his roots. Back to a place where space was plentiful and restrictions were but a simple fence. Back to a place of his first love: wild freedom. And by doing so, they awakened a fresh spark of purpose in the heart of Seabiscuit. He went on to be a champion that ran like the wind.
There have been times in my life when I was so focused on limitations, distractions, doubts, and losses that I failed to see my possibilities. Times when I fixed my thoughts, my goals, my choices, and my habits on ways that led to death instead of life. Times when I lost sight of true vision – God’s awesome purpose for my life: to worship Him, to seek Him, to honor Him, and to obey Him… so that He might be glorified in and through every race I run. Have you been there? Are you there now?
In order for Seabiscuit to run with the power and passion he was made to run with, he needed to remember that he was a wild stallion. The same is true for you and me. In order for us to live the lives we were born to live, our vision must be cast far beyond our restrictions and obstacles. Our vision must be fixed on the One who designed us to worship with wild abandoned… to live with wild freedom. You were born to be wild, friend. Wild for Jesus. Wild with purpose. Wildly surrendered to the will of God. Wildly obedient His commands. Wildly led by the power of the Holy Spirit at work within you.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him

Dear Lord, Thank You for promising restoration, redemption, and renewal to all who call on You. Help me to look beyond my failures, challenges, and limitations to Your abilities, healing power, and boundless love. Be my vision, Lord. Empower me to live in the wild freedom of Your grace and in the center of Your plan. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Catawba County Social Services Making a Difference for Foster Children Craig and Cindy Quick of Catawba County considered becoming foster parents for 14-15 years before they actually became licensed foster parents. “The part of ‘letting go’ (of the children) scared us so bad,” Cindy said. She operated a child care center for 21 years, and the couple had two children of their own, so they were prepared for the normal ups and downs of childhood. They finally decided to become foster parents after their two sons, now 19 and 23, moved out of the house. Cindy and Craig attended an information session at Family Builders, the fostering and adoption unit of Catawba County Social Services. To become foster parents, they had do go through a background check and take classes.
sometimes recovering from physical abuse. But after a few months in a loving home, it was amazing to see the children blossom.
The children were excited by doing things most kids take for granted -- such as learning to ride a bike, playing on a sports team, or taking a trip to the beach. For some of the foster children, just having enough food was a new experience. The Quicks said their two grown sons and their families have been very supportive, often spending time with the foster children. Although being a foster parent is challenging and time consuming, it is well worth the effort, they believe. It’s hard when the children leave, but the Quicks realize they need to focus on the next child who will need them.
The Quicks have now been foster parents for a year and a half, and are glad they made the decision. They have cared for a total of six children and now have four foster children. Cindy is a full-time mother, while Craig works as an upholsterer. He said he enjoys playing with the children after work. “It’s kind of fun,” he said. “It actually keeps you young.” They both say they enjoy seeing the children develop during the time they are with them. The children come from homes where they were abused or neglected. In some cases, their physical injuries were severe. Cindy recalled picking up some of the children from Baptist Hospital, where they had been in intensive care. A couple came home with feeding tubes. “I never would have seen myself doing this,” she said. “I’ve overcome a lot of fears of medical stuff.” Craig added, “If something happens, you are surprised how you can adapt to it.” Cindy said the social workers and therapists at Social Services were very supportive. “I could call at 10 or 11 o’clock at night, and there would be somebody to help us. They are great. I could not ask for anything more.” Cindy said the children had low self-esteem and were

Things I Have Learned From My Mother
By Julie Simmons
My mother has made a huge impact in my life. One of my earliest memories is of my mom recognizing a need and stepping in to help. This occurred when I was 3 or 4 years old. My mom and I had been shopping. We had actually gotten in the car, when my mom got out and went towards an elderly woman who was attempting to cross the street. The woman would step out, hesitate and then step back. My mom walked over, spoke to her, took her arm and helped her cross the street. When I questioned why she had done this, she said that she had noticed that the elderly woman was having trouble crossing the street and mom just wanted to help her. I remember this vividly almost 50 years later. I recently brought this up in a discussion with my mom. She got teary eyed and said that she remembered it well. She said that I had said “Mom, I love you more than ever for doing that.” I don’t remember those words, but she did. I do remember the incident. What I learned: Small acts of kindness matter and words spoken from the heart in the moment are powerful. One year when I was in my late teens, my mom decided that we would get an insert for our fireplace. This was one of those pieces with glass doors that fit into your fireplace so that you could open the doors to let the heat out or close them if the room was getting too hot. The salesman was helping us with the purchase. The insert came unassembled so my mom asked “Do you think I can put this together?” The salesman’s reply was classic, “I don’t know if you can, but I’m sure your husband can.” My mom’s reply, “Well if he can, then I can.” We went home and she assembled it ( and as we sometimes joke, used all of the pieces). Lesson learned…don’t let others define what you can or can’t do. There have been things in my life that I have found I could not do, but far more that I have found that I can do if I just try. I owe this to my mom.
I can’t remember all of the details of another learning moment, but I was complaining about how my supervisor was treating me unfairly. I was in my early twenties and had a part-time job while attending college. I don’t even think the unfairness was anything major, but I was allowing my feelings free reign and voicing the sentiment that this supervisor was deliberately conspiring against me. I do remember what my mom said, “Julie, if you look for trouble, you’ll find it.” I learned that it is easy to make perceptions of wrong reality and that in times like this, you need to step back and really assess the situation. People are rarely out to make your life miserable but you can make yourself miserable imaging that they are. Another jewel from my mom…in response to me saying, “I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry.” Her reply was “Well if you have a choice, then it is always best to laugh.” There are some things that do warrant tears but there are probably a good deal more that simply warrant a good laugh. Realizing that time passes and what seemed a monumental catastrophe will in time fade and not even be a memory. A laugh goes a long way in putting things in their proper perspective. These are just a few examples of actions or words that were powerful enough that I can still remember them. These reflections have made me realize that daily we have the opportunity to influence others. A comment or simple action may make a powerful impact. When you think that you haven’t made a difference, think of those that have impacted you. It is the sum of the small things that add up and make a person who they are. I look back with gratitude to my mother and look forward with hope that the sum of my actions will be a fraction of hers.

The Soldiers Reunion celebration in Newton is believed to be the longestrunning patriotic celebration not based on a holiday in the country. The tradition began in Newton on July 4, 1889 when Civil War veterans answered a statewide call for recognition of their wartime efforts and to receive their pensions. The gathering in Newton led to annual reunions, starting the popular patriotic Soldiers Reunion. Today, the celebration offers a variety of family-friendly activities and events for veterans and

I love trivia, especially when it comes to weddings. I have collected many bits and pieces for years and recently decided to update my list. Some things have changed, some have not, but most are truly unexpected.

Did you know that most bridesmaids think they look good in blue? Of course, not the same shade or hue, but most admitted that they would wear blue.
•
Roses come in 6 colors (white, pink, red, yellow, orange and purple), the rest are variations. You could take several varieties of roses in the same color and create a beautiful bouquet. Can’t fault Mother Nature!

At least 150 NEW wedding colors are added every year and each one has a name. No wonder brides get confused. Examples are silver peony, silver cloud, silver sea and silver heart. Silver heart?
•
Las Vegas hosts over 100,000 weddings a year. Hawaii is second with over 30,000. Great time to own a little wedding chapel.

And in Vegas, Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve are the two busiest wedding days.
•
An average wedding in the US has 150-175 guests. That is INVITED guests.

About seventy-five percent of couples pay for part or

The most popular days for a wedding are Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, Saturday morning, Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.

that at least one of her friends is an analytic, too. Why? Because analytics are the only people who can put up with analytics! My best friend and are a great example of this concept; we’re both analytics. If you’re ever bored, put two analytics in a room and have something go wrong. It’s more entertaining than watching a cat try to shake tape off his paws. (Which, if you’ve never seen it before, you ought to watch at least once.) Anyway, my analytic best friend and my analytic self were traveling out of the country with two other guys from our school and a chaperone. When we arrived at the airport, we received our tickets with our seat numbers. Unfortunately, my best friend’s ticket read, “Receive seat number at gate” while the rest of our tickets simply said ‘4B’ or ‘2C.’ We arrived at our gate three hours early, per instructions, and every so often my friend would check at the gate to see if she had been assigned a seat number. She hadn’t. Finally, our three hours were up, and they began allowing people onto the plane one section at a time. Still no seat number. My section was called, and I reluctantly left my friend and the chaperone waiting at the gate to board the jet.
Admissions of an Analytic By Peyton Hedrick
Yes, I am one of THOSE people. You know the ones. That person who over-thinks everything. Who constantly evaluates and reevaluates how she looks based on what everyone else is wearing. The person who changes suitcases three times before going on a trip because she doesn’t want to have the biggest suitcase or the most bags but absolutely HAS to have that one thing that doesn’t fit. That’s me. If I don’t meet your eyes, it’s because I’m worried what you’ll see in mine as I walk by. The eyes are the windows to the soul, you know, and what if my eyes look sad or depressed or scared even though I’m having a great day? What if you ask me a question and I don’t hear you, so I just stand there like an idiot, not knowing what to do? Hi! I’m an analytic. An important thing to know about analytics is there’s usually more than one in a group. If you meet an analytic, it’s a safe bet

As I took my seat, my mind was already racing. What if she didn’t make it on the plane? She’d have to spend the night at a nearby hotel by herself, and I did not see that happening. I didn’t see our chaperone either. Pulling my phone out, I tried her number; no answer. Not that that was surprising; she never answered her cell phone. I tried the chaperone’s number; zilch. As the jet doors were closed, I finally got a hold of one of the guys, who informed me that she had indeed made it onto the flight- by taking our chaperone’s seat. There we were, four minors, 40,000 feet in the air over an ocean to a foreign country on a different continent without a chaperone. It didn’t help that I now felt responsible for the group, or that I was currently thinking of about 10 different worst-case scenarios. I settled back in my seat, praying that this country admitted unaccompanied minors and promising to strangle the next person that told me, “God is stretching you.” We landed without incident, which I wasn’t worried about, and entered the airport terminal, which I was worried about. What if we got lost and ended up wandering around the labyrinthine airport for the rest of the day? What if the group we were meeting wasn’t there to meet us? What if we couldn’t find our luggage? What if they didn’t let us into the country without a chaperone? It didn’t help that I’d had almost no sleep on the plane (If you’ve never tried to sleep on a plane, DON’T!) As usual, none of my worries came true. We followed the masses to the checkpoint and waited patiently. When I got up to the counter, the border guard asked me how many were in my group. Thinking quickly, I replied “Ninety-seven.” Technically, it was the truth; there were 97 people on our plane who were going to the conference we were attending. He looked at me quizzically. “How many chaperones are with this group?” he asked. “I have no idea,” I replied apologetically, which was absolutely true; I had no idea. Fifteen questions later, I was waved through without a problem.
Fortunately, so were my best friend and one of the guys. And then it happened. The youngest of our group decided to tell the border guard that we four minors were here alone and that our chaperone was left across an ocean. On the far side of the terminal, I seriously debated walking out and leaving him, especially when the border guard dealing with him waved over another security officer. I sighed, accepting the inevitable. We’re going to get detained. We’ll be stuck here until the chaperone shows up, if she even knows to come look for us. We’re going to be branded as international terrorists. Just then, the guard waved the last member of our party through the gate. Breathing a sigh of relief at escaping international fugitive status, we made our way to the baggage claim. We found our bags and moved out to the exit, where a member of the conference team was waiting to meet us. We boarded our buses and took off for our hotel, where we walked straight onto another bus to begin touring. As we headed to our first destination, I leaned my head back and rested my eyes, drifting toward sleep. I was so glad that finally someone else was responsible for us. I had nothing to analyze. Then it hit me. I was with three other minors. In another country. On another continent. Without a chaperone. Are you feeling out of sync? As we go through our lives, we find ourselves in different places mentally than we want to be at times that can perplex and challenge us. The reason it perplexes us is that we don’t quite understand why we are feeling the way that we do. In other instances, we feel out of place or disconnected, and it seems to have crept up on us, making us question where we are currently in our relationships, career, lifestyle, finances or in our lives in general. When you feel out of sync or out of place in your life, it can become your focus and then your nemesis, taking you further from where you want to be rather than more connected to where you want to be. A definition of synchronicity is the belief that simultaneity has meaning beyond mere coincidences. Understanding what helps you feel connected as well as how everything is connected is your first step towards getting back into step. Relationships Out of Sync: Everyday we experience this in subtle and not so subtle ways. When you are feeling disconnected with a relationship or many relationships, especially relationships that are meaningful to you, it can become all consuming in trying to understand why it is happening. The reason it becomes all consuming is that you are assuming a variety of reasons or scenarios as to the why. Instead of relating to get to your answers, you are creating your answers. Seek and ye shall find is wonderful and all too often ignored advice. Talk. Ask questions. Gain insight. Career Out of Sync: You had aspirations and dreams related to your career and you are not where you had hoped you would be at this time. Or, you made choices with good reason and thought behind them to take a different path, and now feel out of sync compared to everyone else around you. First, stop comparing. Second, take stock in what you have accomplished, both in small ways and in meaningful ways. Especially when it comes to our careers, human nature is a competitive nature, even if you claim you don’t have a competitive bone in your body. Comparing is a form of being competitive. Look at your career from within your heart and your passion. If you still feel out of sync, then shift towards your passion, not towards being like someone else. Lifestyle Out of Sync: This is another area where we tend to compare too much, causing despair or a feeling of being less worthy if our lifestyle doesn’t stack up to others because of
our own expectations. The question to ask yourself is are your expectations driven by what others are doing or by how you truly want to live and enjoy life? Every one of us is a different human being inside and out. Never forget this. While we can share many tastes and preferences, there will always be something that is different in what we like to do and how we enjoy living. Embrace your life and who you are and you will be able to live your life with more joy and satisfaction. Income Out of Sync: Our dependency on money is one of our greatest threats in life. Face it, you cannot accomplish anything without money, or can you? You don’t have to make a million dollars to feel like a million dollars. If you feel that your income is out of sync, there are several things you must ask yourself to know whether it is real, imposed or self-inflicted. First, do you believe you are not where you want to be financially due to circumstances out of your control? Second, is there a specific amount of money that you have determined is your golden number to success and that is why you feel out of sync? Third, do you believe you are limited as a result of your current financial circumstance? What you cannot control is a waste of your focus. Focus instead on what can you control. If it’s a magic number, chances are you are comparing again. Stop comparing. Don’t allow money to be your measure of success. If you are feeling limited, then you are viewing money as your only resource. You have more than money as a resource to leverage to help you achieve and get where you want to go. Your time is a resource as well as other people. When you begin to realize the power of these two resources, you will be amazed at how money becomes less of a crutch and at the same time begins to be more of a resource for you. Your greatest opportunity when feeling out of sync in any way is to take a moment to understand why, because it is your life trying to tell you something important. The key is to realize that it is not trying to tell you something is wrong as much as it is trying to help you embrace your existence for all that it can be each and every day.

The Heart of the House- The Kitchen by Susan Guest, ASID
It seems that at every event we have in our home, tons of people end up in our tiny kitchen. Maybe they feel more comfortable there. Or maybe, they know that is where good stuff happens. Even my little dogs like to hang out under my feet when I cook. I like to be in the kitchen for several reasons. Cooking is a creative and scientific outlet. It is such fun to experiment with new recipessomething totally weird like a salad with tomatoes, onions, and watermelon or brownies with zucchini, black beans or paprika. Often, it is relaxing to plan meals from the things I’ve picked from the garden that day. Another reason to be in the kitchen is that cooking some recipes or foods reminds me of family back home and days past. The purpose and description of the kitchen has evolved over the years. At one time, cooking was done over an open fire and water brought from a well or other source. Later in history, wealthier families had a separate building (or buildings) where food was prepped, meat was smoked, or canning took place. This ensured that the home owners did not smell like smoke, the large house had less possibility of fire damage, and that the lower class was separate. Changes in history that affected the kitchen include the invention of electricity and the electric stove. Also, running water brought in the use of sinks and faucets. As society became more dependent on restaurant and prepared meals, ice boxes and refrigerators were needed.
At one time, kitchens were often a boxy room behind the dining room where the “little woman” could prepare meals for the family while her man was at work. That changed as women entered the work force and the open floor plans became popular. Thanks to Frank Lloyd Wright and other architects in the mid century, kitchens became open to the other areas of the house. The cook of the house could prepare a meal while helping their children with homework or socializing with guests. Today’s kitchens reflect the needs and lifestyle of the home owner. I have some clients who have never opened a cookbook. One such client says that she “doesn’t read fiction”. Her kitchen is beautiful and has all of the things a person who does cook would want, but it is for show and the room is always spotless. Other clients watch all the cooking shows and love to spend time in
pg 30 | Sophie Woman’s Magazine | August 2014
the kitchen. Those clients incorporate things like commercial ranges and refrigerators, extra spice storage in a pull-out by the range, double ovens, ice makers, warming trays, and a huge pantry. Others might have two islands-one for food prep and the other for guest to watch the food prep. (We all have wanted to be a celebrity chef at one point!
If you are renovating your kitchen or building a new one, make sure that you have a “work triangle”. This is a triangle that goes from the stove to the fridge to the sink. The total feet of the triangle should be between 13 and 26 feet. Any larger, and the chef is working too hard. Any smaller, and the space is too tight to work efficiently. No leg of the triangle should be less than 4 feet or more than 9 feet. In a couple of homes that I have designed, we used a couple of work triangles. This is helpful in homes where both partners cook or for large families that often get together to cook. Prep sinks in islands or away from the main work triangle, and extra food prep areas come in handy in this situation.
No matter what size your kitchen, one of the main things for safety is maintenance. Make sure that you clean your hood often and remove the grease that can accumulate as a fire hazard. Sharpen your knives. More pressure is needed to cut with a knife with a dull blade and accidents happen more often with a dull knife. Seal tiles, granite, or marble when needed to keep bacteria at a minimum. Empty your cabinets at least once a year and get rid of all those expired items-especially cooking mixes with dried eggs. The kitchen will always be the place to cook recipes handed down by our grandmothers. It will always be the place at a party that most of the guests congregate. And it will be forever more, the heart of the home. Keep it safe and clean and it will return the love. A Prayer for God’s Blessing
law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Cor. 15:55-57, NASB “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies.” Jn. 11:25 Though Diane’s body finally succumbed to cancer at age 55, her spirit safely resides with the Lord Jesus Christ due to her faith in Him. Forever in His presence, she now completely experiences Scripture’s truth, “In Thy presence is fulness of joy; In Thy right hand there are pleasures forever” (Ps. 16:11). While I miss Diane’s gentle love and caring kindness, I’m comforted knowing she’s with the Lord. Truly a treasured sister-in-law, she was a beautiful lady inside and out—all because of Jesus. Gratefulness fills me as I reflect on His sacrifice and the victory He secured. Death doesn’t remain a permanent state for those who know Christ as their Savior. Christians will spend eternity together in God’s holy presence, and joyfully I’ll see Diane again. Sometimes in the flurry and hurry of life, I forget the blessing of sisterhood—whether blood relatives, in-laws, or sisters in Christ. My earliest memories include sisters, and to this day they remain an integral part of my life. Understanding our need for heart-to-heart human relationship, God created sisters as one way to achieve this. Mary and Martha, born into the same family, provide a realistic view of sisterly ties. Their experiences also can be applied to in-laws and the family of God. Just as all of us undergo heartache and loss in this life, Mary and Martha grieved the loss of their brother, Lazarus. “So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days … and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.” Jn. 11:17, 19 Finding comfort in each other’s presence, these sisters mourned together. Though we’re not privy to their conversation or much of their interaction, their togetherness stands out. Likewise, I was consoled by my sister-in-law’s and sisters’ company at Diane’s memorial service. Just being there together supplied strength and support in our grief.
Father in Heaven, All of my hope is found in Your perfect Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Gloriously triumphant over the grave, He has secured victory for me. I praise You! Yet I confess I don’t cherish this amazing truth enough, for everyday concerns often suppress my joy. Thank You, mighty God, for this great salvation, this tremendous hope, this incredible eternal life I possess in Christ. Thank you also for the beautiful gift of sisters, whom You’ve lovingly blessed me with. Please increase my appreciation of You and them upon each new day’s arrival. In Jesus’ beloved name, Amen.
Who comes to mind as you contemplate sisterhood? Perhaps you can take a moment today to let her know she’s in your thoughts … that you’re thankful for her and blessed by her part in your life. Maybe you can set aside time to spend with her—she might even like to sample some Frozen Pineapple Salad with you.

Life is fleeting, but God grants us various joys during our days on earth. Sisters are one of the best.
“Remember that frozen dessert Diane used to make?” my sister, Heidi, asked. “Yes!” I responded, smiling because I’d been thinking about it recently—it was as if she’d read my mind. Heidi and I absolutely loved that salad in our younger years. And at that particular moment, it produced another sweet reminder of Diane, our precious sister-in-law, whose death we grieved. Walking together after her funeral service, we carried a comforting understanding between us. Oh, how we’d loved Diane. We missed her—already. But we possessed hope. “O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the

Did you know? Research has consistently shown that consuming alcoholic beverages increases a woman’s risk of hormone-receptorpositive breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer increases with the amount of alcohol she consumes. When compared with nondrinkers, women who consume one alcoholic beverage per day have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer. But the risk of developing breast cancer is roughly one and a half times greater for those women who consume between two and five alcoholic beverages per day when compared to nondrinkers. Breastcancer.org notes that experts estimate that a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer increases by 10 percent for each additional drink she consumes each day. The risk is considerable for young girls who consume alcohol as well, as teen and tween girls between the ages of nine and 15 who drink three to five drinks per week have three times the risk of developing benign breastlumps, which have been linked to a higher risk of breast cancer later in life.

Did you know? Millions of students participate in online learning each year, and that number continues to grow, according to the Sloan Consortium. A growing number of colleges and universities now offer distance learning courses, and some students find it possible to complete their degrees without ever visiting campus. Online learning enables students to take classes according to their own schedules and complete coursework without having to commute to campus. This is particularly attractive to students who work full time or have families. Convenience is not the only reason to consider online education. According to a 2009 meta study from the United States Department of Education, students who took online courses performed better than those taking the same courses through traditional instruction. Students who mixed online learning with traditional classroom work performed even better.
