While you live, love, While you breathe, sing, While you walk, dance, While you work, shine, While you see, dream. Isn’t that beautiful? I only wish that was the way I lived my life every minute of every day. Someone sent something to me by email this past month and I copied it and put it on Facebook. I don’t know who wrote it originally, so I can’t give credit to that person. It was just so thought provoking that I wanted to share it with you. There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She told her boyfriend, ‘If I could only see the world, I will marry you.’ One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her. When the bandages came off, she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend. He asked her, Now that you can see the world, will you marry me? The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn’t expected that. The thought of looking at them the rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him. Her boyfriend left in tears and days later wrote a note to her saying: ‘Take good care of your eyes, my dear; for before they were yours, they were mine.’ This is how the human brain often works when our status changes. Only a very few remember what life was like before, and who was always by their side in the most painful situations. Life is a Gift. Today before you say an unkind word - Think of someone who can’t speak. Before you complain about the taste of your food - Think of someone who has nothing to eat. Before you complain about your husband or wife - Think of someone who’s crying out to GOD for a companion. Today before you complain about life - Think of someone who went too early to heaven... Before whining about the distance you drive Think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet. And when you are tired and complain about your job - Think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your job. And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down - Put a smile on your face and think: you’re alive and still around. How often we look at the superficial instead of the real value of things or the real value of a person. If you were looking at my desk at home, chances are you would see this “thing” with paper clips in it. You might think that is the ugliest thing you have ever seen and surely I could find something nicer to hold paper clips. It is painted green on the outside and sort of a dirty yellow on the inside. It is somewhat shaped like a bowl but it does not sit flat and the rim looks so uneven, like it was dropped and cracked. This object could not even be sold in a yard sale for 10 cents, yet it is worth a fortune to me. Joshua, my first grandson who is now 21 years old, made that for me in his Sunday School class when he was only a toddler. I can still see his little face with that beaming smile and the love dancing in his eyes when he gave it to me all carefully wrapped as only a toddler can wrap. It seemed as if he was holding his breath just to see if I was going to like it. I don’t have to tell you the response he got from me. The Christmas ornaments that some of my grandchildren make and give to me each year are my most treasured pieces. They didn’t spend a lot of money and you would not buy them from me but yet they are treasures to my heart. As we observe our relationships with others, we need to look at their value and not their faults. That is another thing I wish I did ALL the time. I am so blessed with family and friends, yet I take it for granted way too much. “Help me Lord to see how empty my life would be without them. Help me to see past their faults and to treasure the wonderful qualities each of them have. Thank you Lord, for each one of them and the richness they bring to my life. In Jesus Name. Amen”

REACHING YOUR FULL POTENTIAL: Your Inner HOPE Coach! by Kim Fletcher, Life Coach, Author, Speaker
“When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.” Helen Keller Everyone has their favorite local restaurant. The place you can go in your old jeans and just hang out a bit longer than usual. You often order the same menu item and always expect consistent comfort food. Well, I certainly have my favorite local spot. And I love it for the food and for the people I encounter there. Here is the story of one recent encounter: I was having dinner with one of my best friends. We were enjoying a quiet conversation when one of my favorite waitresses came over and slid into the booth like a friend. Since she was not taking care of us that evening, we needed to catch up quickly on life. A few moments into our interaction, she proclaimed, “Would you mind if I ask what you do?” I braced myself, as most people follow my answer of “life coach” with a blank stare and something like, “You do what?” But this young lady was different. When I briefly stated how much I love coaching and training, I simply asked her if she was familiar with the profession of coaching. She quickly exclaimed, “Well, yes, I actually am.” When her interest and her insight on coaching obviously exceeded the average individual, I just had to ask… “Wow, how do you know so much about coaching?” She went on, “Well, you see, my favorite magazine is called Sophie Woman’s Magazine and there is this lady that writes in there about coaching, reaching your full potential, finding your vision, living out your dreams and your faith.” I always tell my husband that he had better not touch my Sophie magazines.” As she continued to explain how she keeps and re-reads all of those articles, I simply chided, “I am that lady.” Her eyes grew wide and she wrapped me in a warm hug. With tears, she explained how she had told her husband how much she wished she could be like that, think like that, and how she wished she could connect with “that lady.” We shared a few more thoughts and then she returned to work. She slipped out of the booth leaving us both a bit more excited and she left me pondering how many people each of us touch without ever even knowing. This young woman has been under my eye of observation for quite some time. The friend of a friend, I was impressed from the moment we met. I have watched her hustle under great stress, smile and laugh with customers and quietly, and respectfully
work with excellence day after day. I hope I get to hand-deliver her next copy of her favorite magazine, Sophie Woman’s Magazine. I also hope I get to see the excitement grow in her heart as she realizes that her quiet, gentle and kind manner were impacting my life even as my articles were impacting her. I have a life theory that all true and lasting impact is reciprocal. I believe that there is mutual benefit for each person in every positive human interaction. At the heart, this article serves to let a young woman know that she blessed and challenged my heart that night in that booth as my Sophie-writing identity was uncovered as she realized she already knew her ‘coaching hero’. I also hope this article serves to remind each reader that you are being observed… watched closely by individuals hungry for hope and longing to find a better way to do life. If your life was the only one being observed, do you quickly warm to the hope of where you are leading those around you? What type of leader are you becoming? Take a few moments to evaluate your own life impact. Determine to go into the coming week fully intentional to live in such a way that leaves those around you better. Find someone who needs to have a word of encouragement spoken over them and be their ‘hope coach’. The friend I was dining with that night went to her mom years ago, hurt and disappointed. When she exclaimed her disappointment in people, her mom wisely replied: “Just go be to the world what you wish the world would be to you.” That is the challenge I leave you with today. And, by the way, Mayra, this one is just for you!

Journaling The J urney
by Judy Smith
My hair is growing back!!!!!!! I can’t add enough exclamation points to let you know how ecstatic I am about this. I am finished with the one chemo that caused it to fall out and that is such a reason to celebrate. My eyelashes are starting to come back as well. Did ya’ll hear that shout? I can be pretty loud and I am so happy I am shouting. Well, not about all the hair that is growing back. Why is it my eyebrows and mustache grow more rapidly than anything else? It was nice not having to shave under my arms and my legs but I guess I have to take the bad with the good. Woohoo! Sorry, I shouted again. This may be too much information for you to read so if it is, I suggest you stop now. I don’t want to embarrass anyone and I will try as hard as I can to be discreet but I just have to share this with you. Last month I shared that I was getting ready to start radiation and now I am really starting to feel the effects of the burning and the tiredness. Those things are bad but, in my mind, there are other things that are bad as well. There is prep work that has to be done before they start the radiation. They have to make a “form” that you lay in and then the Doctors and the nurses like to use your body for a drawing board. When they started the drawing, I had to undress from the waist up. After they were finished using me for their art object for the day, they told me we had to go through the hospital to do a CT scan. With all truthfulness, I can tell you that I am not a vain person. However, after my hair fell out, I was very selective about who saw me without a hat, scarf or a wig.
Here I was, naked from the waist up and nothing to cover my head and they tell me we are going through the hospital. Of course, I assumed I needed to get dressed but they just threw a small…..very small, blanket across my shoulders, in a shawl fashion, to cover up with. In my mind, I just imagined who I might pass that I would know. This really small blanket over my shoulders was hardly big enough to cover up my chest so I had to make a choice. I decided right then that if I saw someone I knew, that blanket was going over my head. My boobs being exposed was not near as bad as someone seeing my bald head! Of course I am just kidding. I think. I did say when I started writing that I was going to share from a personal point of view but I bet you never thought I meant something like this. Some things just bother you more than others. Being bald was one and sweating was another. Am I the only person who sweats? If sweat were calories then I would have vanished. Sweat is not good for radiation because the markings they put on you just melt away and then they have to mark you again. The guilt I was feeling over this just overwhelmed me the first week but then I told myself that surely I am not the ONLY person they have had that sweated them off. Now, if the markings are gone, we just deal with it and I don’t feel guilty any longer over something I can’t prevent. You could say I am learning not to “sweat” the big stuff. Not even the hair on my chinny-chin-chin.

FlyLady THE
by Marla Cilley
Ready Room Are you ready? Ready to start your day? Ready to start your week? Ready for what’s next in your life? Most of us think we are, but when an opportunity presents itself we slam the door in its face. All because we are not ready! We are not dressed, our houses are in a mess and we don’t have time right now! Our mothers used to yell at us to get ready! Our sweet darlings do this today and we silently ignore those words because we are in rebellion. Why are we rebelling against the one thing that is going to help us take the next step to finding out who we are and what we want to do with lives? I have been thinking about the term “Ready Room”. I looked it up in the dictionary and it says it is a room where pilots are briefed and await orders. Before they enter this room they are dressed and prepared to go! Every day is a new day filled with exciting opportunities, if we neglect ourselves along with our routines we will not be ready to jump in and enjoy a chance at having fun. Not being ready keeps us grounded and not in a good way! When we ignore the basics we will not be ready to be spontaneous. Isn’t this all that any of us want to do! Be carefree and spontaneous. Haven’t we been accused of this our whole lives. Deep down inside we knew that it was just fine to have fun. We never listened to those who said, “Get Ready” first! We thought they were just boring! The truth is that they know something that we did not want to recognize. When you get your homework done; you can go out and play! Our routines are not strait-jackets they are the framework that frees us to have fun and play! They are also the foundation to helping us be creative without the guilt that has stifled our creativity all these years. When we stifle our creativity we kill part of our souls.
Guilt has a way of beating us down and keeping us from accomplishing our dreams. Releasing this guilt by getting ready for your day is a first step to the rest of your life and finding yourself. The guilt has kept you locked away. The guilt has also been instrumental in your daily abuse of your body and mind. We all know our drugs of choice. When our creativity is bottled up inside we feel bad and this is when we turn to that form of self-medication to protect ourselves from the feelings of guilt and worthlessness. This can be anything from food to alcohol or even computers and books. We can lose ourselves any number of ways. We are worthy of love, creativity and being ourselves. We just don’t know where to start to get ready! It is not that hard to put one foot in front of the other and take baby steps. After all, what you have been doing has not been effective in harnessing your creativity for good in the world. You have shut it down because of those voices in your head telling you to do something. Quite those voices by following a little different path: Get up and get ready for your day! Take baby steps to find your voice by doing simple three step routines in the morning and in the evening. These routines will be your ready room to what is next in your life! Standing Firm in the Storms of Life (Part 2) by Mary Southerland
Today’s Truth
2 Corinthians 6:6 (NLT) “We have proved ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, our sincere love, and the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Friend to Friend
It would be just fine with me if I never had to go through another storm. However, God is more committed to my character than He is to my comfort. Every storm is an opportunity to grow in Christ and trust Him more. The Apostle Paul was well acquainted with vicious storms and harsh realities. In his writings to the church at Corinth Paul offers five truths that – when applied – will enable us to stand firm in the storm. Truth 1: Truth 2: Truth 3: Truth 4:
Live a pure life. Seek understanding. Learn to be patient. Practice kindness.
When bad things happen, we cry out in desperation for someone to care. More people come to Christ during a crisis than at any other time. Kindness is simply compassion at work and love in action. We need to constantly refocus our success-targeted eyes, crucify each self-promoting heart motive and look for the needs around us. I often wonder just how amazed we will be when we get to Heaven and find the unlikely, unknown but devoted servants of God exalted above all others – rewarded for their quiet and often unseen acts of kindness. A preacher once described his mother as a woman of great compassion. One day he came home from school to find her sitting at the table with an elderly, homeless man. Apparently, she had gone shopping, met the man on the way and invited him home for a warm meal. During their conversation the visitor said, “I wish there were more people in the world like you.” The woman said quickly, “Oh there are! You just have to look for them!” The old man simply shook his head and smiled, “But lady, I didn’t need to look for you. You looked for me!” Needs constantly parade before us day after day but we don’t see them. We are too busy to see the broken lambs the Shepherd sends our way. We view them as intrusions or annoying interruptions in our very important schedule. These uninvited and unscheduled guests may very well be divine appointments sent by God. The warning of Hebrews 13:2 is a haunting one. “Remember to welcome strangers, because some who have done this have welcomed angels without knowing it.” How many angels have we missed because we were too busy? Perhaps we fail to be kind simply because we don’t care enough. A little girl was sent by her mother on an errand. She was gone far too long so when the little girl returned, the mother demanded an explanation. The little girl said that on her way she had met a friend who was crying because she had broken her doll. “Oh,” said the mother, “then you stopped to help her fix her doll?” “Oh, no!” replied the little girl. “I stopped to help her cry!” We are never more like our Father than when weathering relationship storms with kindness and love. Jesus says
that if we really love God we will really love each other. Kindness and compassion are directly related to the health of our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The truths in 1 John 4:20 are clear, “If people say, ‘I love God,’ but hate their brothers or sisters, they are liars. Those who do not love their brothers and sisters, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have never seen.” We can be very religious and not care enough. Kindness does not look for reasons. Compassion doesn’t ask for limitations. It searches for opportunity. Truth 5: Experience and practice love. We not only need God in the midst of the storm, we need each other. The essence of love is tested within the context of relationships. Paul writes that we must “prove” ourselves by being patient and kind. How we handle relationships exhibits the depth and validity of God’s love at work in and through us. Ephesians 4: 2-3 (NCV) “Always be humble, gentle, and patient, accepting each other in love. You are joined together with peace through the Spirit, so make every effort to continue together in this way.” Learning to build healthy relationships is crucial to a fulfilled life. Someone will always be disappointed, disgruntled, or displeased with us. We have a choice to make – to honor God by waging peace or venerate Satan himself by entertaining conflict in relationships. God is committed to unity. If we don’t make “every effort” to eradicate discord, a storm may come to help us do so. I have a friend who raises and works with horses. She once explained how a group of thoroughbred horses confronts an enemy. They stand in a circle, facing each other and, with their back legs, kick out at the enemy. Donkeys do just the opposite, facing the enemy and kicking each other. Enough said. When golf balls were first manufactured, their covers were smooth. Golfers soon discovered that after a ball had been roughed up a bit they were able to get more distance out of it. Manufacturers then began producing golf balls with dimpled covers. Life is a lot like that. It takes some rough spots to make us go our farthest. It takes some storms to teach us that God is faithful. When was the last time you threw a party to celebrate a trial or storm in your life? James 1:2-3 (NLT) “Whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” God’s ways are higher than our ways and most human reactions are in direct opposition to the paradoxical ways of God. Honestly, there are times when what He has asked me to do simply does not make sense – to me. And there we find the problem. Faith is a matter of blind obedience, not human logic. At the heart of every storm is victory – waiting to be claimed!

High- Intensity Interval Exercises Exercise Number One -Squat Jump- This exercise is sure to get your heart rate up, plus shape and tone your glutes and legs at the same time. A great fat burner! Step One- Stand upright with feet together, hands clasped.

Step Two- Jump down into a squat position with feet apart.
High Intensity Interval Training The Fountain of Youth Last month I visited the Dominican Republic with my family. We stayed at a beautiful resort and enjoyed our days swimming, walking on the beach, and taking various excursions around the island. While visiting this exotic resort, I met a few people who complemented me on my abdominals. One lady visiting from New York asked me what she needed to do in order to get a flat stomach. The secret to a slimmer waist lies in your body’s ability to burn fat. Turn your body into a fat burning machine by eating a clean diet combined with high intensity intervals and strength training. Over the years, I have worked with many clients of various ages, sex, shapes and sizes. I want to share with you a common issue among women and men in their 30’s and beyond. As people age, if they are not physically active they tend to trade muscle for fat. This will happen even if they are eating the same amount, and types of food that they have for years. The reason is that as we age, people naturally lose muscle, not only making us less strong, but also causing us to burn fewer calories in the course of a day. To counter act this, people try to increase their cardio and often pick low-intensity cardio like jogging. Often they will find that this is not effective in either fat loss or toning up the body. The solution is to include high intensity intervals combined with resistance training. High intensity interval training involves all-out maximal training, followed by intermittent low-intensity exercise or rest. This type of fatloss training can be done on the treadmill, elliptical, cycle bike, circuit room, and even in the weight room. For example, on the treadmill, start off with a 3 to 4 minute warm-up. Next, 30 seconds of running hard at the fastest pace you can attain and then 60 - 90 seconds of light jogging or walking for recovery. This is called the interval. The intervals can be repeated 6 - 10 times (depending on your level of fitness). The workout ends with a 3 to 4 minute cool-down. In the weight room, after the warm up, do two exercises, one after the other, with no rest in between. The exercises can be for the same muscle group or two different muscle groups. They can even be completely different activities (e.g., a strength exercise followed by a cardio exercise). If you are consistent with your interval training, along with eating a clean diet, overtime you will increase your muscular strength, metabolism, bone density and overall functional capacity to a manner similar to those in their late 20’s. Which may mean that high intensity interval training combined with resistance training is as close as we can come to the Fountain of Youth.

Step Three- Spring up from the bottom squat position as high as you can, landing once again with your feet together and standing upright.
Tips- Keep your back arched and push your butt back far so your knees don’t go past your toes. Complete 3-4 sets of 1520 repetitions. Beginners, don’t jump, just squat down and start with 1-2 sets, work your way up. Exercise Number Two - Dumbbell Punch - Increase your heart rate and tone your muscles with this fat burning exercise. Step One- Stand with your feet together and abdominal muscles tight. Holding a light set of dumbbells, alternate punches straight out in front of you.
Step Two-Then punch up and outward at a 45 degree angle
Step Three- Finally, punch up straight overhead. Tips- Do three sets of eight reps each in the three punching directions. Beginners, start out with no weights, and slowly move up.

Wig Banks….
Helping To Cope With The Cancer Experience By Judy Smith
Wig banks strive to help build the self-esteem of cancer patients in many ways. There are a lot of women who cannot afford wigs, scarves, hats or skin treatment options. However, the need is greater than the accessibility. Fortunately, that is not the case in our area. The first of its kind in the nation is The Wig Bank of Caldwell County, that provides services to cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones. Walking in the front door, you immediately sense the support and love they have to offer. The beauty and peacefulness overwhelm you and surrounds you, creating an environment of hope that will help carry a cancer patient through this emotional journey. The beautifully furnished house, including the living room with a fireplace and the stunningly decorated dining room, is created so a cancer patient can feel relaxed and at home Battling cancer is one of the most difficult trials a person can face. There are options a person can take to help fight that battle and one of them is chemotherapy. However, the side effects can be overwhelming. One side effect of some chemotherapy drugs 226 Mulberry Street Lenoir, NC 286 is hair loss, but fortunately, this is not permanent. These kinds of physical changes www.wigbank.org bring about emotional changes that are already being put to the Pictured Above: The Wig Bank of Caldwell County test. Help Transform Your Child’s Lunchbox Written by Sandra West Balanced In Success You may have heard that our children are the first generation that will not outlive their parents. Their health has deteriorated due to insufficient exercise and poor choices in their diet. We as Americans are in a health crisis! The average American consumes 30 teaspoons of added sugars and sweeteners a day as reported by the Center for Sustainable Systems at the University of Michigan. www.css.snre.umich.edu/css_doc/CSS01-06.pdf By age 12, 70% of all American children have developed beginning stages of hardening of the arteries. Bogalusa Heart Study Brooke Thomas, Certified Nutrition Consultant and Owner and Founder of 360yourlife, is helping Americans “get their health back”. Her passion is to help live the way we were designed to live. She is playing a part in the American health revolution aimed at getting us out of this health crisis. “We as Americans have come so far away from where we used to be relative to health and nutrition. We need to get back to basics,” says Brooke. After facing cancer 6 years ago, and having two children with husband Brett, Brooke realized that everything that she put into her body could contribute to her cancer coming back. She learned that certain foods cause inflammation and had an adverse effect on her body. As she continued to learn more about nutrition, she discovered her passion to help others realize that there is hope in turning their own health and life around. She does this not only with adults, but also with kids at a young age. One of ways that she is reaching children is through her leadership in the afterschool fitness and nutrition and healthy lunch program that she developed for Davidson Day School in Davidson, NC. Sandra Gant with Charlotte News Channel 36 covered the story earlier this year which highlighted the impact that good nutrition has on children who participate in the program. 360yourlife is focused on facilitating each individual’s unique health transformation. Brooke explains that it begins with choosing foods that come from the earth and are closest to “real” foods. For example, by choosing an apple instead of apple juice, the fruit stays in its pure and natural form. The next shift is to look at ingredients listed on the packaging of our food instead of calories and fat content. You want to choose foods that have “real” ingredients that are good, clean foods. She makes this easy by offering a free grocery list that can be downloaded from the website 360yourlife. As our children head back to school the dreaded lunch packing begins. One of the most important parts of the health transformation includes our children. Parents can learn to replace those less healthy items that our kids like with others which have better ingredients. One of the best ways that Brooke has found to accomplish this is by using a lunchbox that has separated compartments. Not only does it save the environment

by not having to throw numerous plastic bags away each day, but it also allows for packing kids healthier options. These kits allow parents to move away from pre-packaged, heavily processed and preserved foods to more natural foods such as fruits with natural dips and creative healthy sandwiches. Brooke suggests preparing lunches with themes as well as getting creative with fun shapes. Great recipe and theme suggestions are offered on the 360yourlife website to make it easy. Often time’s parents are concerned when beginning this lunch transformation that their children won’t like the healthy food substitutions or that they will see other kids at lunch with the processed food options that they prefer. Brooke suggests talking to your children about why certain foods are better for their bodies; those that make them happier, give them more energy, and make their tummies feel better. She also encourages involving your children in the selection of the lunch themes for the week and even to include them in making some of the items. This will leave a lasting impression while also making Mom feel good about what she is doing for her children. There are many reasons to start a healthy lunch program with your kids as they return to school this fall. By offering your children “live” foods you will bring life to their bodies instead of giving them “dead” packaged foods. There are numerous behavior issues in children that have been linked to the foods that they eat. The Food Commission, Britain’s leading independent watchdog on food issues, conducted extensive research with children ingesting food additives found in over 200 common children’s foods and drinks. As a result of this research they called for the list of additives to be removed due to the adverse effect it had on the children’s concentration, temper, and sleep patterns. While it is impossible to ensure that all morsels of food that go into your children’s mouths are healthy, especially as they get older, they will be learning about making good choices which will filter into their health even later in life. Brooke’s passion to play a significant part in our country’s health revolution has led her to offer free shopping guides and free weekly health tips and recipes to everyone. She has also developed a lunch box kit which includes everything to get you started on packing healthy lunches for your kids. In addition, she offers individual and group consultation in many areas of health and wellness from Pantry Makeovers to Vitamin Basics. Brooke would like for you to join in the health revolution today by living healthy and loving life. Please visit her website www.360yourlife. com to learn more.

It’s that time of year again…time to put on your struttin’ shoes, and hit the streets of Viewmont! The 3nrd annual Viewmont Street Strut, a celebration of the diverse nature of the community, is happening in Hickory, NC, on Saturday, September 22. Area businesses, retail shops and restaurants are uniting together, once again to bring this event to life. This year’s event offers even more for everyone to experience. No longer will you have to deal with traffic or find the perfect parking space because free shuttle service is provided. Designated shuttle stops are being placed along the route, making it easy to visit as many businesses as possible. It also showcases many extremely talented artists and musicians who live and work in the area. “We love the community feel of the Viewmont area. It is impressive how the Street Strut unites different types of businesses together to create a positive experience in the area,” commented Debra Kaylor, of the Hickory Plastic Surgery & Reconstructive Center. “It brings the whole community together in support of each other.” Every location is doing something different to celebrate the day. There will be wine tastings, zumba dancing, live musical entertainment, free food, special sale discounts, fun activities for the kids, talented artists and sculptors for us to meet, an antique car show, a live petting zoo, plus so much more! Do you have a tapestry of friends? Friendships are what make being human so wonderful on so many levels. They confirm that you are never in this world alone, and that there is always someone there who can be a resource, a sounding board, a support and more. Friendships complete us and expand us all at the same time. Friendships reinforce we are not going crazy at times, keeping us sane when the demands of our lives feel overwhelming. What I have found to be a common factor of people who seem to truly embrace and love their lives is that they are rich in friendships – a tapestry of friends made over time, each special in how they came to be and the varied connections that keeps them close at heart. How are your friendships impacting you? How are they enriching you? How are they supporting, guiding and empowering you? Consider these factors in your friendships and explore the possibility that there could be a new friend just around the corner to enrich your life even more than it is already. Shared histories: You may have read this saying on a plaque or greeting card that goes, “You will be my friend for life because you know too much.” The confidentiality of friendships is the most powerful and precious connectors. To know and trust is our greatest gift we can give to one another. To know and be accepted is our greatest comfort given to us. Shared genes: The saying that goes, “we can choose our friends, but not our family” is one many have said, most often in exasperation. What is truly special is when you can say without hesitation that a family member is also among your dearest friends. I cannot imagine life without my sister, more so because of the friendship we have forged that represents the very essence of how fate can bless us. Shared lifestyles: Lifestyle friendships take on many shapes and levels, all important in what they bring to you. From neighbors who become close family friends to other women who are working mothers, young mothers, raising teens, mompreneurs, becoming empty nesters and the list goes on, these women are wonderful sounding boards and cohorts when we need them the most. Shared work ethic: At work, having friendships is sometimes viewed as taboo because of the work that needs to be done. What a shame. In research I have begun conducting, a correlation that is being reinforced loud and clear is that those people who have friendships at work as well as in their personal lives are more likely to look forward to going to work and also feel more satisfaction at work. I mention ethic here because the friendships are usually formed because the individuals share similar values around their approach to working. Also interesting is that these individuals are more likely to be achieving their personal and professional goals than those without friends at work.
Shared challenges: Knowing someone who has gone through a life challenge that you have gone through or are going through makes the challenge less daunting. The friendship reinforces that the challenge can be overcome or you will be able to cope. Having someone you can truly open up to about what the challenge feels like and how it is affecting you is not only reassuring, but therapeutic by not having to keep everything bottled in. Shared passions: Whether it is a cause, a belief, or a love of something in particular, the energy that comes in having a friend that shares a particular passion is exhilarating and empowering. Our passions bring out the very soul of us. Having someone who shares in our passion enables our passions to breathe and be expressed more freely. Shared aspirations: I began meeting with a group of women several years ago on a monthly basis because we all had shared aspirations that we wanted to nurture on a professional level. Each of these women has become dear and special friends personally as well as professionally as we have shared both personal and professional accomplishments and challenges in our quest towards achievement of our aspirations. Shared interests: Whether it’s wine, hiking, Bunco, shopping or volunteering, gathering to share a particular interest gives us permission to pause a bit and simply appreciate our lives and the people in them. It is stopping to smell the roses in the most beautiful sense, because it is being shared and mutually appreciated. Shared values: One thing I know for sure is that if you have values and no-one in your life that shares that same value, you feel a void inside as if something is missing in your life or that a part of you is missing. This is why friendships are so significant. They are a form of validation and reinforcement of our values and why they are important to us and for us. Take a moment to list friendships you value in each of the areas I described above. If there are any areas that are void of friendships, determine why and explore the possibility of nurturing friendships in these areas. Being open to how your friendships can support and nurture you in different ways throughout your life will create this blanket of warmth and reassurance inside of you that cannot be overstated. Our friendships represent a beautiful tapestry of all that is meaningful and special to us, and why living life is so very special in so many ways.

Hidden Treasures Stefanie Hutcheson
Let me tell you about my grandson. No, not Walker. That One. Conan the Destroyer. Conno. And his latest nickname: Hammy. My lovely Connor has so many different characteristics and, as is often the case of one who will soon be two years of age, he changes daily yet proceeds to keep some of the traits that make him the lovable, adorable, precious boy that he is. My father-in-law came up with the nickname “That One.” It is in reference to when he was comparing the two boys and their personalities. It was said in fun exasperation when Connor was being a little ornery, unlike the (at that time) sweet, cooperative Walker. “Conan” comes from the earlier days when it seemed all that Connor would do once he came upon an area was mess it up, or tear up whatever his tiny little hands came upon. Eating time was a disaster and often the food, the kitchen and eating utensils, and anything else in his path was destroyed in his endeavors to be in control of what was placed in his mouth or on his plate. Hammy? This one I came up with. Have you ever seen that movie Over the Hedge? In it, there is this tiny little squirrel that is so full of life and exuberance that often he sets off on an adventure and before he gets there, he forgets why he was going and comes back and asks for directions or to have the request repeated. This has been the story of Connor for the past few weeks. Someone will tell him to go get something, perhaps a diaper, and he will gleefully run off to the back bedroom to get one and before he makes it to the hall, turns around with this confused look in his eye and says “What?” in this screeching, high-pitched voice that one can’t help but laugh at. Another characteristic of Hammy is the fact that he likes to squirrel

away things. He’s been this way for most of his near two years. Whether it’s a toy that he hides in the closet, a book that he hides in his bed to look at when it’s supposed to be bedtime, an extra cracker that he happened to have in his hand when he was in Granny’s bed playing with my teddy bear, or—and this one still cracks me up when I think of it—when we were out in the garage the other day, getting ready to let PawPaw in, and Connor saw his little tricycle that has an area in the seat that opens up for storage. He had a couple of pepperonis in his tiny little hand and without a thought other than storing up this little gem for later, he opened the seat, put the pepperoni in, closed it, and was waving at his PawPaw all in the blink of an eye. Ah, Hammy. My little love: what is Granny going to do with you? Watch and learn, of course, just as I did—just as I still do!—your older brother. This lesson learned is how to be ready to do the will of others with joy in your heart and without question, as well as the best lesson you taught me: laying up treasures. Matthew put it like this in chapter 6:19-21: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Keep hiding those little valuables of yours, Connor. It is usually with joy when PawPaw and I come across one of your little jewels (although the crackers in the bed were a little scratchy). For when we find these gifts, we smile. We think of you and how delightful you are with your sweetness, with your ability to act without thinking when you have stored away things that you think you will need later. And we too are reminded that what we do has an impact that may not be seen; that we may even forget about having done. However, when that treasure is revealed to us, we find a priceless gift that cannot be taken from us. Thanks Hammy! Not only will I find food in odd places and trip over toy trucks and cars that you hid in my closet, I will constantly be reminded to store up these lessons and hide a few pearls of my own.
PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Benefits to Prostate Cancer Testing
There is no better time than in September (Prostate Cancer Awareness Month) to recognize the importance of testing for the early detection of Prostate Cancer. Understanding the effects that the diagnosis of Cancer, more specifically Prostate Cancer, can have on a man, his life, and that of his family is vital. Over the past couple of years there has been much speculation as how to best test or diagnose this disease. It is the opinion of many physicians and that of the AUA (American Urological Association) that the PSA Test (prostate-specific antigen), when used along the standard of care guidelines, still provide physicians the most valid information to diagnose and treat prostate cancer in its early stages. Before the PSA test, physicians generally detected and treated Prostate Cancer in much later and more advanced stages of the disease. Diagnosis was relied upon by progressed symptoms and from abnormal findings from the digital rectal examinations. Due to the progressed stages of prostate cancer at the time of detection, the chances of the disease being life threatening dramatically increased. As reported earlier this year by the AUA, 1“the PSA test gives the medical community the ability to diagnose prostate cancer at its earliest stages-while confined to the prostate and prior to the occurrence of metastatic disease. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Registry data demonstrates a 75 percent reduction in the proportion of men with prostate cancer who present with metastatic disease, as well as a 42 percent reduction in age-
adjusted prostate cancer mortality during the PSA era. According to SEER data from 1988-2001, the relative survival at 10 years for a patient with localized prostate cancer was 72 percent, compared to 3 percent for a patient with distant (metastatic disease).” This data suggests a true clinical advantage to early detection of prostate cancer. When patients see a physician, the patient and physician should discuss why the PSA test to be a good indicator of prostate cancer and let the patient decide whether or not to undergo the test. While many patients go to a physician with current PSA values, the physician will want them to understand what those values mean and what it can indicate in the early detection of prostate cancer. Once the patient understands the testing indications along with their symptoms, the physician will formulate a plan to test or retest their PSA or move on to more definitive diagnosis testing (i.e. ultrasound guided prostate biopsy) for the presence of the disease. This decision is dependent upon the specific patient, his test results in combination with his signs and symptoms. While most physicians believe in the validity of the PSA test being an effective tool in diagnosing the disease, they do understand that it is not a stand-alone method to be used in making treatment decisions. So if you are a man age 40 or greater, have a family history of prostate cancer, or are experiencing signs or symptoms please consult with your physicians regarding the relevance of PSA testing for early detection. Early detection will give you the best possible chances to find and treat the disease while it’s in a treatable stage. 1 Ganz PA, Barry JM, Burke W, Col NF, Corso PS, Dodson E, Hammond ME, Kofan BA, Lynch CP, Newcomer L, Seifter EJ, Tooze JA, Viswanath K, Wessells H. “Serving The Unifour Area Since 1984”
SO YOU’VE BECOME
THE BRADY BUNCH! by Susan Guest, ASID Remember the 70’s TV show called The Brady Bunch? Carol, a mother of three girls, married Mike Brady who had three sons of his own. Together, along with housekeeper Alice, the family experienced a lot of drama. Mike was an architect, and Carol was in charge of all the crew at home. The six children sometimes got along. More often than not, they had disputes over some trivial and some not-so -trivial issues. If you have never seen this show, old episodes or the movies are easy to find. Today I am seeing more and more “Brady Bunch” situations where two families merge into a larger one. This can create real -life drama and sometimes can be a nightmare. Decorating can become very “interesting” for several reasons. First, both families come into the new environment with their own furnishings. The design styles from their former homes may or may not coordinate. Colors can be a mismatch. When a young couple gets married, they usually start off with nothing and get to shop together and dream about how their home will look, feel, and function. In a “Brady Bunch” family, saving for college tuition and the expenses of having multiple children often erase or diminish the decorating budget. Sometimes in this situation, the former mates might have selected the furnishings in the last home. That style might not come even close to the tastes of the new couple. Also, the furnishings might not be heavy-duty enough for use in a large family. In the “Brady Bunch”, the children often have power struggles. Jan was always jealous of her older sister Marsha. Marsha always got the better clothes, furniture, boyfriends, etc. In today’s world, children might fight over who has the largest room, the biggest closet, the most toys, etc. This can be a recipe for disaster. Here are some ideas that might make the transition smoother: •
Hold a family council like the Brady family did. Bring all the issues to the table openly. Let each child have a chance to talk. • In rooms that are shared by two or more children, have each child pick a color and combine all of the chosen colors into a plan. (Don’t worry! They will most likely like a different color in a few years!) The object is to make each child feel special and loved. If budget is an issue, you might paint accent walls or use pillows on their beds with their selected colors. • Find pieces from both households that work together. Try to avoid having a combination from both homes in one room if the styles clash. You might need to have the living room in one style and the family room in another. • Combine items and colors that make the social areas flow. The social areas are the areas in which the entire family shares with guests. These include the kitchen, living room, dining room, and foyer. You might not achieve a flow throughout the house with the children getting to select their room’s décor. Try to keep everyone
somewhat happy! • You will probably have to eliminate some pieces or acquire some new ones to make everything flow. If some of the items that do not work are sentimental or valuable, consider storing them in the basement or a storage unit. • Storage will probably be one of the most important investments you will make. Consider new or built-in pieces such as lockers by the back door, window seats with storage underneath, storage ottomans, or anything to keep your family organized and your home tidy. • Recover seating pieces that are in good condition. Find fabrics that pull everything together. • Paint chests, tables, hutches that are in wood tones that do not match. • Donate. One family’s trash will be another family’s treasure. • Measure your furniture and draw a furniture plan. If this is not in your skill-set, hire a designer to help. Another option is to make “footprints” of the furniture out of newspaper and arrange them on the floor in the room you are coordinating. If you have the muscle to move the furniture in different scenarios, wonderful! Make sure you use furniture gliders or something to protect the floor. • Try to make the children happy in their rooms, the playroom or basement; but let the adults control the décor of main social areas. -the living room, dining room, kitchen, powder room, and family room. • If you have the space, plan an optional eating area outside for casual style dining on a beautiful day. Make this a fun space for eating messy foods, playing games, or having friends for dinner. • Don’t forget the yard! Planning a space for outdoor games, such as twister and badminton, might help bring the family together. • Have at least one family night a week (more if possible). The family that plays together stays together! Hopefully, inspiration from The Brady Bunch can help you in your blended family situation. When things go wrong, you can always blame Alice!

TRUTH
& BEAUTY
by Teresa Pope, Esthetician
Question: This summer heat is melting my make-up. Is there anything I can do to keep my make-up looking fresh? My eyeliner and mascara smudge so bad I look like a raccoon at the end of the day.
Answer: Yes, this heat wave that we have been having can destroy a good make-up application. There are a few things you can do to help combat the make-up melts. First don’t use liquid or creme foundations, they have a tendency to run in the heat. Think of butter, it’s solid until it is heated and then it turns liquid. Foundations will do the same. A better selection would be to use powder foundations such as mineral make-up. It will stay in place all day. If you don’t like mineral make-up then use your usual formula and apply a loose shear powder over that using a large blush brush. However, remember this. The more powder you use the heavier your make-up will appear and the more your fine lines will show. You may also opt to use only the powder as your foundation. Now, to tackle your raccoon eyes, you need to do a couple of things before you apply your make-up. When applying your moisturizer and or sunscreen, allow it to absorb into your skin completely before you apply any make-up. If you don’t, the oils in the products will cause your make-up to smear. Once the moisturizer is absorbed, apply your eye make-up as usual. Then dust your eyes lightly with loose shear powder. You can use a small eye make-up brush for this so that you can apply directly over top your eyeliner and lashes. If you combine all this heat resistant techniques, you should arrive home at the end of the day without looking like a raccoon.

a matter of minutes. What a wonderful resource this is and an excellent way to save valuable time. But when it comes to understanding the deeper things of life—our Creator, His heart and provision for us, and our relationship with Him—there remains one source that has stood the test of time: the Holy Bible. Years ago, a friend basically told me the Bible was outdated. She perceived that all of its teachings didn’t necessarily apply to the modern era, and as such, we were free to pick and choose the parts of God’s Word that suited us. It saddened me to hear her view of God’s precious Word. On the other hand, another friend shared something later that I’ve never forgotten. People in a foreign country gathered eagerly in hopes of receiving just one page of the Bible. Can you imagine? They were so hungry to read what God says … to savor and meditate on it. To them, the Bible was a treasure. What is it to us? II Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”
Italian Chicken Casserole
• •
2 lbs. boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 (10 ¾ oz.) can cream of mushroom soup 4 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped 2 cups carrots, peeled and chopped ½ onion, chopped 1 Tbsp. minced garlic 1 tsp. Italian herb seasoning 1 tsp. seasoning salt ¼ tsp. black pepper ½ cup water Dash of olive oil
•
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. 2. Spray 9x13 casserole dish with non-stick spray. 3. Cut uncooked chicken into bite-size pieces and place in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and stir well. 4. Put everything into the baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 45 minutes.
Dear friend, perhaps you already enjoy the timeless truth of God’s Word. May I encourage you to appreciate it even more? Or, if your Bible sits dusty on your shelf, may I encourage you to take it down, open the cover, and discover what you’ve been missing? Just as I tried a new recipe and was delighted with the outcome, so can you try God’s “recipe” for your life and be thrilled with the results!
A Prayer for God’s Blessing
“How sweet are Thy words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! … Thy word is a lamp to my feet, And a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:103, 105
(Recipe adapted from online recipe)
Loving Father in heaven, You are so loving and kind. Your Word communicates these truths—and all truth—in such beauty. I confess I sometimes take the Bible for granted and don’t esteem it as highly as I ought. Thank You for expressing Your heart in written form so I can experience the joy of knowing You. Please use me to lead others into the pages of Your precious Word. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.
Food for the Soul Every cook should possess a tasty chicken casserole recipe. I’ve tried many without being completely satisfied, so one evening my search extended to the Internet. I simply Googled ingredients already in my kitchen, clicked on a link, and instructions for this appetizing concoction appeared. My family loved it the first time and I’ve made it many times since. Information truly is at our fingertips these days. One only has to type in a few words … and voila! Lengthy lists of links instantly show on the computer screen. We can learn about anything from “A” to “Z” in
•
When we need to learn truth … the Bible can teach us the answer. When we’ve sinned and need conviction … the Bible can reprove us accurately. When we’ve strayed from God’s way … the Bible can set us on the correct path. When we’ve done something wrong … the Bible tells us the right thing to do.
“All Scripture is inspired by God …” How amazing that we can actually hold a copy of this divine Book in our hands and glean daily from its contents! The one true God is revealed on its pages, and the Way to an intimate relationship with Him is outlined in detail. From Genesis to Revelation, we can learn about the Lord Jesus Christ—the living Word (see John 1:1).

Diagnosing Gynecologic Cancer Chances are someone you know may be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer in her lifetime. Just what are these diseases, and what should one expect? Gynecologic cancer is a broad term that encompasses cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. As of 2006, the last year for which numbers were available, 76,515 women were told they had a gynecologic cancer and 27,848 died from one of these diseases. For those uninformed about the different cancers that can plague women, here is a brief look at each of them. Cervical Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable of the gynecologic cancers because screening is available through PAP tests. There is also a vaccine available to prevent human papilloma virus infections, which are known to contribute to the formation of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer forms in the cervix, which is the bottom part of the uterus and connects to the vagina. While all women are at risk, those over the age of 30 are more likely to get cervical cancer. However, recovery is high, as the cancer is highly treatable.
Ovarian
Uterine Uterine cancer forms in the uterus, or the pear-shaped womb of the woman. This is where a baby forms and grows. Because the cancer generally takes hold in the lining of the uterus, it can be referred to as endometrial cancer. No one is sure just what leads to uterine cancer, but there are some risk factors. Age is one of them; women over the age of 50 are more at risk. Also, women undergoing hormone replacement therapy for menopause or osteoporosis are at greater risk. Those who have had endometrial hyperplasia, or an increase in the number of cells in the lining of the uterus, are also at a higher risk for uterine cancer.
Vaginal and Vulvar The vagina is the inner pathway to the uterus. The vulva is the outer part of the vagina that is protected by two folds of skin. Cancers in these parts of the body are very rare (1% and 5% respectfully). Just as with cervical cancer, HPV may contribute to the formation of vaginal or vulvar cancers. Women should bring to doctors’ attention any symptoms that seem irregular, such as unexplained itching, bleeding or lumps in these areas of the body.
More women die from ovarian cancer than any other type of gynecologic cancer. However, detecting cancer early allows for the best chance for successful treatment. Ovarian cancer produces symptoms, but many times they are mistaken for other conditions, such as irritable bowel, stress and depression. Symptoms may include abdominal pain and pressure, constipation, urinary urgency, loss of appetite, feeling full, and changes in menstruation. Women with any of these symptoms should visit a doctor to rule out other conditions. Although it can affect many age groups, 90 percent of those who experience ovarian cancer are over the age of 40.

For your wedding day, choosing your gown is one of the most important decisions that you’ll make. And it’s not easy. So many articles have been written about what you should wear and when you should wear it. They say short girls shouldn’t wear ball gowns and tall girls shouldn’t wear slim dresses that emphasize their height. There is one thing to remember here-it is YOUR wedding. Not the sales associate at the big box bridal store (most are on commission anyway) and not your old maid Aunt Sue. Everyone has an opinion, but yours is the only one that matters.
The
Wedding Gown by Mackey Carpenter
First, it’s important to make an appointment at any salon to plan to go to make sure you get the personal attention that’s necessary for this important decision. You make an appointment to get your hair done, don’t you? Ask how much time they allow for an appointment. Take your time and check each gown thoroughly. And don’t be pressured into a gown that you’re unsure of because the appointment time is up. Some other sales pitches are, “That gown is just now discontinued and can‘t be reordered” or “Someone else is interested in that gown. If you don‘t buy it, they will”. I love clichés and one of my favorites is, “When in doubt, leave it out”. Try on many styles of gowns, even if they may not be what you have in mind. That is the only way you’ll know what looks good and what doesn’t. You may like the top of one and the bottom of another. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The same can be said about color. Very few brides look good in a stark white dress. Custom Jewelry Engraving! There are so many subtle & differences in shades of white. Most bridal salons do not allow photos. Ask for information about the gown from your consultant. They may or may not comply. These days so many brides are ordering from the internet and the stores know this. Some shops will offer to keep your choices on file. Personally, I think it’s rude to take up someone’s time only to order online later.

Look closely at the construction of the gown. This may be more important to some people than others. The more expensive gowns should look as good on the inside as the outside. Check for loose beads or strings hanging from embroidered appliqués. Even though neither of those should appear on even a sale gown, they most definitely shouldn’t be on a full-price gown. Some of the soft, flowing destination gowns will have minimum seams and details, while the more elaborate gowns will have so much more. Also keep that in mind if the gown needs alterations. Now for a few tidbits. A cathedral veil will give the illusion of height to a short bride. A waist length or shorter veil looks great on a tall bride. A jeweled belt at the waist is flattering on most figures. When wearing a short dress for the wedding or reception, if you have any hesitation about the length, it’s probably too short. Be wary of showing too much leg or cleavage. Do a low back instead. It’s a little sexy but more tasteful. You WILL know when you try on the right dress. That will be the moment when all the craziness starts to make sense.

Savannah lost her two front teeth this month. It was a big ordeal for her, because the teeth had been so stubborn that she had to have them pulled. She did really well with that, and wasn’t even scared when the dentist had to give her a shot. Of course I teared up when she told me about it, but that’s beside the point. And even though it was a really nerve wracking way to lose her first teeth, the real dilemma quickly became what the “Tooth Fairy” happened to be giving out to kids nowadays. To hear Savannah tell it, the Tooth Fairy has been leaving ten and twenty dollars for kids for a single tooth. Now, I’m all about good enamel, but it’s not worth twenty bucks! Besides all that, back in my day I was lucky if I got a quarter! Savannah was easy enough to distract - we simply asked her what she’d like to have. Thank goodness she only said a dollar and some bubble gum since neither her father nor I had stopped to consider what she might have asked for.
In any case, we helped load her teeth into the tiny, plastic treasure chest the dentist sent her home with, tucking it beneath her pillow before heading back downstairs to wait on her to fall asleep. All we had left to do was sneak into her room and leave the stuff under her pillow. Simple enough, right? After what felt like forever, Savannah was out. Goodie bag in hand, we crept up the stairs, making our way into her room while giggling to ourselves at how sneaky we were. I stuck my hand under her pillow, expecting to find the chest right where we’d left it, only to scramble around once I’d come back empty handed. It was then that Chris looked at me like I was the dumbest person on earth - which may or may not have earned him a death threat, I can’t remember - and stepped up to the pillow. I could see it on his face, too: he thought he was going to get those teeth right off the bat and rub my face in my innate inability to find things. So, I was quite smug when he was digging around, looking just as confused as I had been. It wasn’t until we were in a heated whispered argument about where the chest was that I noticed Savannah staring at us, bleary eyed and more than a bit baffled. “Mama?” she said, rubbing the drool from the side of her face. “What are you doing in here?” “Oh nothing,” I answered quickly, “just checking to see if you’d fallen asleep yet.” Never say I’m not a quick thinker, because that just ain’t true. Satisfied, Savannah fell back on her pillow and promptly picked up where the snoring had left off. It took a few more minutes and just as many close calls to finally find the chest, which had somehow ended up at the foot of the bed. We made the switch and ran out, me accidentally-on-purpose elbowing Chris in the ribs as we went. All in all, it was a success. Until the next morning, when I found Savannah with her treasure chest, staring at her teeth in wonder. “Where did you get that?” I asked her, surprised. “Easy. I knew that you and Daddy were the Tooth Fairies, so I just checked your room.” Well, okay then. I seriously dread Christmas.

“I wish to go... to Disney World!” ~Ann Louise, 4 Mary Beth remembers all too clearly the moment she was told at only 22 weeks in-utero, her unborn baby Ann Louise had Critical Aortic Stenosis. “Honestly, our happy little world just fell apart,” Mary Beth said. At 23 weeks in-utero, Ann Louise had fetal heart surgery to dilate her aortic valve and restore blood flow to her heart. Though the surgery was a success, complications with the pregnancy caused Mary Beth to give birth to Ann Louise four-and-a-half weeks before her due date. In her short little life, Ann Louise has had three open heart surgeries to replace heart valves. Ann Louise has to see cardiologists in Greenville, SC and Boston four times a year which has made the hospital her second home. Simple colds have turned into cases of pneumonia, and Ann Louise has to be fed out of a feeding tube to make sure she gets the maximum amount of nutrients she needs. Ann Louise has not been the only member of the family to suffer. Mary Beth had to miss her son Graham’s fifth and sixth birthdays, as well as her other son Reed’s third birthday. “I thought I would lose my mind. I wanted so desperately for us to be together. I will spend the rest of my life making it up to my boys,” Mary Beth said. When Ann Louise’s family came in contact with Make-A-Wish® things finally began to look up. Three-year-old Ann Louise knew precisely what her wish would be… to go to Disney World to “ride in tea cups and love on Mickey.” The trip to Disney World would be the family’s first trip to anywhere other than the hospitals up in Boston since Ann Louise was born. To make sure Ann Louise could enjoy her trip to the fullest, Mary Beth and Andrew encouraged Ann Louise to try to eat without the assistance of the feeding pump so “she could grow big and strong to ride teacups and visit with Mickey.” Determined to try, Ann Louise started eating and did not have to feed through a feeding pump the entire week at Disney. But the “magic” of Disney did not stop there! “When we returned, we still did not have to use her feeding pump. For the first time in three years she was eating enough on her own. She started taking all of her medications, by mouth, too,” Mary Beth said. A week before her fourth birthday, Ann Louise’s feeding tube I wish to b was completely removed. e … a Nav facebook.com/ncwish y pilot. The impact of a wish is enormous in the lives of a wish family.
