o to the stores and you will be blasted with aisles and aisles of “things” you can buy to tell or show someone you love them. Chances are, you have probably purchased something already or at least you have been thinking about it. We do it every year. Millions of dollars are spent to tell someone we love, that, we love them. How often though, does someone buy that “thing”, yet doesn’t express that love in other ways or at other times. I can tell you for sure that receiving a card or box of candy from my husband on Valentine’s Day would not mean diddly to me if that was the only way or time that he tried to express his feelings. Now I hear people say all the time that it is just not their way to do things. “I don’t have to say or do anything, they should know how I feel.” You want to know what I have to say about that? BOLONEY! And I know I did not spell it right, but that is the way I would say it. Maybe you would say, “that was not the way I was brought up.” BOLONEY!!! Just because we are brought up a certain way does not mean we have to always be that way. My parents were not the affectionate kind. I can’t even remember my dad kissing me on the cheek, or tucking me in, or telling me he loved me. He died when I was in my early 20’s and to this day, that is one of the deepest longings I never had fulfilled. I wanted my dad to tell me he loved me. Don’t we all really want that from others? We want to be loved and we want to hear it and see it in the actions you take toward us. So this Valentine’s Day, give the card and the candy, but most importantly give of yourself not just this day but everyday. Parents, make sure your kids know you love them and how precious they are to you. Let’s go a step further. Find someone who does not have anyone and think of something you can do so they won’t feel so lonely on a day that is meant for showing love. We always talk about people who are lonely during Christmas but I can’t imagine how I would feel, knowing that it was Valentine’s Day and knowing that I did not have one single person who would think of me on this day. After all, Love is a Many Splendor Thing!

Each February, schools, banks and even many offices close for a holiday that technically doesn’t exist. Though the third Monday of every February is widely known as President’s Day, the official name of the holiday is Washington’s Birthday, so named after the first president of the United States, George Washington, whose birthday fell on February 22nd. While Washington’s accomplishments were certainly worth noting, many states began referring to the holiday as President’s Day to honor another illustrious president with a February birthday, Abraham Lincoln. Because states are allowed to follow their own holidays, many chose to honor Lincoln over Washington. However, some states still celebrate the day as “Washington’s Birthday.” Such is the case in Massachusetts, though Massachusetts state law still prescribes that the governor issue an annual President’s Day proclamation honoring all Massachusetts-born presidents, including John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Calvin Coolidge, andJohn F. Kennedy. Similarly, in Virginia, where George Washington was born, the holiday is legally known as “George Washington Day.” In 1968, Congress considered legally changing the holiday’s name to President’s Day. While those efforts stalled, Congress did decide to move the holiday to fall between both Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays.

Embrace Life, No Matter What By: Jackie Weaver, State Farm® agent

Have you ever heard, “If I had only had more time.” As people grow older, some may have regrets about all the things they did not do. Not taking an exotic trip or missing visits to family members might top the list. Your list might even include “not running a marathon.” One of the biggest regrets may be not telling a loved one how much you care. One thing is for sure: The more you enjoy life and prepare for the unexpected, the fewer regrets you may have. While no one can possibly do everything on a lifetime to-do list, there are plenty of ways to show people you care. One way is to make sure your family has the financial means to continue living their current lifestyle if you are no longer around. Life insurance is one way to do just that. A strong economic foundation includes adequate life insurance coverage; enough to cover a mortgage, college tuition or outstanding debts. There are many online sites, including statefarm.com®, that provide calculators to determine your life insurance needs. A qualified insurance professional can help you choose a policy to meet your needs and fit in your budget. Once a policy is in place, you can revisit it, especially during different life events, to make certain the coverage is still appropriate. Knowing you have provided for your loved ones will give you peace of mind so you can enjoy doing the things you’ve always wanted to do.

Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.® offering: Automotive Insurance • Homeowners Insurance • Health & Disability • Life & Annuities • Business Insurance

The Value Of A Smile It costs nothing, but creates much. It enriches those who receive without impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash, and the memory of It sometimes lasts forever. None are so rich they can get along Without it, and none are so poor but are Richer for its benefits. It creates happiness in the home, Fosters goodwill in a business, and Is the countersign of friends. It is the rest to the weary, daylight to the Discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and Nature’s best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, borrowed, or stolen, For it is something that is no earthly good To anyone until it is given away. And if in the course of the day some of your Friends should be too tired to give you a smile, Why don’t you give them one of yours.

eing of sometimes neurotic mind, I try really hard not to influence my children’s fears. I had been doing pretty good at it, even though I shouldn’t take total credit. I have some fearless children. Well, I did until a few weeks ago. We had just gotten home from a long day out and the kids were exhausted, so Chris took one and I took the other and the bedtime rush was on. I sent Savannah to her room and was getting into my pajamas when she crashed through the door to my room yelling, “Momma! There’s a big bug in my room! Please come and get it!” I started to make my way to the bathroom to collect some toilet paper. “Mom! What are you doing????? I said to please come get this bug!” She was dancing a jig, pulling on my arm and jabbing her finger in the direction of her room. I have to admit I got a little annoyed at this. “I’m getting something to kill it with,” I said impatiently. “It’s already dead!” she said, jumping in her excitement to

show the bug to me. “Well, I’m not going to pick it up with my hands, I’ve got to get something to pick it up with.” This seemed to make sense to her, so we headed to the bathroom to grab some toilet paper.Paper gathered, we started making our way towards her room. “What kind of bug is it anyway?” I asked. Savannah just shrugged, so I was thinking it must be the macdaddy of all earwigs (since nary a day goes by that I don’t see five or six) or maybe a wood roach (if you’ve never seen one of those, be so thankful...they fly!!!). Worst case scenario, I was thinking maybe we were dealing with something like a super-long millipede. When we got into her room she was bouncing and pointing at it going “See?? See it?” And there, crouched on the bedskirt tapping its twig-thick legs patiently (in anticipation of eating me I’m sure) sat a monstrous spider. Now, before I go on, I would like to point out that I pride myself in being a brave and tactful person. I once walked into a crowd of frenzied, screaming children with a shovel and picked up a snake, carrying it out of the sight of said children before gracefully beheading it while a friend I was with gagged. I should probably tell you that it was already dead, but still. I did it. And then there was the time we saw the black snake in my mother-in-law’s yard and she and Chris were screaming like little girls and poking it gingerly with a hoe and I tried to save it before they killed it. I mean, black snakes are nice! So you see, I don’t consider myself a sissy. At all. Spiders, however, are a different story. So there he was (I won’t allow myself to think it’s a she, because if I do I’ll somehow convince myself that she was pregnant and there are spider-babies in the carpet and that surely I need to burn the carpet...), sitting on my baby’s bed and then, my instinct took over. I turned and ran, screaming from the room. Savannah came flying out after me screaming and jumped into Chris’ arms weeping. He went in and took care of the problem, but Savannah was NOT understanding why I was so scared. “Momma,” she sobbed, “Why? Why was you scared of that spider?” “Because,” I answered as level-headed as I could manage, “Spiders are mean and they bite, hard.” “Mandy!” I heard Chris warn from the next room. Looooong story short, it took us an hour (and me a few teeny white lies...) to get her to bed, not including the time it spent to lift the bed to make sure there were no spiders beneath the bed. Well, okay fine Chris lifted the bed and checked under anything else in the room and I sat in the corner sniveling with Savannah. So now, thanks to yours truly, Savannah is terrified of spiders. I met a young lady who was complaining about the “Freshman 15” that she has gained thus far her freshman year at a university here in North Carolina. She couldn’t understand it; all she was eating was salads! She was eating healthy, or so she thought. Once we talked, the light bulb that went off over her head was blinding. It occurred to me that if this bright coed on full academic scholarship was confused about the calorie content of salads, then she wasn’t alone! So I wanted to write about this and share with y’all. The bottom line? All salads are not created equal. And sometimes good salads go bad. Let’s break it down. 1) Iceberg lettuce is pretty dismal nutritionally speaking. Look at it, no color=no nutrition. Choose other lettuces if you can. 2) You will not go wrong with raw veggies; pile them on. Remember to eat by color (dark green leaves, bright orange carrot shreds, radishes, onions, etc.). 3) Watch the add-ons, like croutons, cheese, bacon bits, hard boiled egg, bean salad (plain beans, yes. However, bean salad is usually swimming in fatty dressing). 4) Speaking of dressing, BINGO, that’s the kicker. Just ONE tablespoon of ranch dressing is 73 calories with 7 grams of fat. One ladle full of dressing equals 2 to 6 tablespoons of dressing! Do the math!! YIKES! 5) Bread aside. If you’re only having a salad for lunch or dinner, it would seem logical to pile on the bread. Then add some but ter to that. Yep, you’re right, just more insult to that injury! So there you have it, a seemingly innocent salad taking up residence in my poor friend’s thighs and all because she didn?t know! Now she does know better and so do you. CHOOSE carefully when eating salads. And remember, if you’re going out to a restaurant and order a salad as your entrée, you might want to look it up before you order. One time I ordered a Grilled Chicken Ceasar Salad from Chili’s or Applebees or one of those places, thinking it was the best choice and ended up my day’s worth of calories in that one meal! Here’s to the light bulb on enlightenment! May yours go off continuously this New Year!

Bridges from the

PAST

to the

Present

by The FlyLady, Marla Cilley As I look back on the past year asked my members what was one of their “Go Me Moments”. I had to ask myself the same question. What had happened that was an accomplishment for me and what had changed my way of thinking? The biggest accomplishment for me was when Leanne and I went to Utah and read our book, Body Clutter aloud. I have never been comfortable reading out loud. Spending a week with Leanne as we read was the turning point in my oral skills. She taught me how to read. Well I knew how to read but not without awkward pauses. Her simple analogy of scallops gave me the visual I needed to make the words flow from my mouth. I learned to read to a conjunction or a comma, then pause slightly and proceed. Thanks Leanne for helping me to overcome a fear and giving me the gentle coaching while making me laugh. I will never forget it. In the years past I never really thought about high school and the people that I grew up with. They were in the past and when you have a busy life, high school friends don’t usually come into your train of thought. A year ago I joined the social networking site Facebook. At first it was for my members to have a place to challenge each other and help one another. It has become a blessing in my life. Over this past year of reconnecting with old friends, I have watched us grow stronger with our mutual love and support. We watched the courage and faith of one of our friends as her light of this life faded and she went on to shine in the heavens. She reminded us daily that we are sunbeams touching those around us and to make the most of every precious moment. I may not need the people from high school in my life but they are a part of me and I look forward to seeing them on my Facebook page every morning. They bless me with their wisdom and love!

I don’t know if the software engineers knew when they built Facebook a few years ago that it would bless so many people. Facebook started out just for Harvard students and then it expanded to other universities. Now it has hit the Baby Boomers and we have taken it to a new level. We have renewed old friendships, made new ones and found lost loved ones. My sisters and I found a first cousin we had not seen in forty years. It was so great to see pictures of her children and realized that we had both named our sons, Justin. It truly is a small world and Facebook helps to shrink it. I think the greatest thing about Facebook is that it is a newspaper filled with headlines and inspirational messages from our friends and family. Who knew that a computer could keep us connected! It is a bridge to our past and to our future. With this connection we are blessed with a present! Our friends can give us the gift of laughter every day! The only problem is that we could stay on Facebook all day. For more help getting rid of your CHAOS, check out her website and join her free mentoring group at www.FlyLady.net or her book, Sink Reflections published by Bantam and her New York Times Best Selling book, Body Clutter published by Fireside. TRUTH

& BEAUTY by Teresa Pope, Esthetician

Question: A woman in my office, gets facials about every 4 weeks. Is this necessary? And what does it do, can’t I just slather on some lotion and slap on a mask at home and get the same results?

Give Your Valentine The Gift of Ahhhhh

A Caring Touch

Answer: I must say, I have never heard my profession described as “slathering and slapping”, but in answer to your question, no, you can not get the same results at home. Please allow me to explain why. Just as we visit our dentist twice a year to have our teeth cleaned of bacteria and food particles that build up on our teeth as plaque, we should also visit our esthetician, once a month to have our skin cleaned of bacteria and dirt particles that build on our skin as clogged pores, acne, comedomes (the technical term

for blackheads), and dead skin cells. The environment we live in, such as the recent low temperatures and low humidity also causes severe dry skin, and dryness causes fine lines to appear. There are two major benefits of periodic facials, the first being PRESERVATION. Maintaining the health of the skin by proper cleansing, exfoliating, increasing circulation, relaxing the nerves, activating glands and replenishing moisture. The second benefit is CORRECTION. Facials can correct such skin conditions as dryness, oiliness, comedomes, fine lines, and minor acne. Facials usually include some type of facial massage which is extremely beneficial because it increases circulation, which in turn brings more oxygen to the surface of the skin, which makes the skin look more radiant and “plumped up” making the skin appear younger. It increases glandular activity, relaxes the nerves, help maintain muscle tone, strengthens weak facial muscles and relieves pain. Facials nourish and soften your skin. Your esthetician will also have equipment and products that you will not have access to at home. For example, a High Frequency unit that kills bacteria, a Galvanic unit that helps tighten the skin, and increases absorption of products by as much as 80%. Products that are only sold to and for professionals. Facials are generally an extremely relaxing and pleasant experience that will leave you feeling refreshed and renewed, and your skin free of dead cells, increasing cell turnover, which in turn makes you look younger. There are too many reasons to list, as to why you should start a good skin care regiment, that includes periodic visits to your esthetician, my advice to you, would be, to get one, and then you will understand your co-workers devotion to her monthly facial. Please submit questions to Teresa Pope @ A Caring Touch, 1626 Tate Blvd. S.E. Hickory, NC 28601.

Modern Confections Enhance Weddings T

radition states that wedding cakes are to be tiered masterpieces featuring white cake and white frosting. However, today’s modern couples are going in decidedly different directions with their wedding cakes. Often the dessert is as varied and unique as the couple themselves. Wedding cakes can be created to match couples’ individual styles and tastes, as well as the color scheme of the wedding. Shapes and sizes can be mixed and matched depending upon what the bride and groom envision. Working closely with a skilled cake artist can yield a truly exceptional confection. Here are some ideas for embellishing wedding cakes and making them mirror the personality of the wedding. * Consider a different shape other than standard round or square tiers. How about something that ties into your theme, such as a seashell or a sandcastle for a beachside wedding? * There are many decorating styles available and you may not have to go with the traditional buttercream icing. Willing? Are You

Passion for a Cause Creates Three Perspectives for a Powerful Outcome

By Nicole Greer, PPCC The Vibrant Coach

I

was standing in front of a little girl named Kenna. I was getting the message loud and clear. I chided myself, ‘Nicole, you have got to do this. You must run the marathon.’ Kenna was 8 years old, 4 foot tall, no hair, and an incredible stage presence. She understood her situation and was willing to do what she could do. She bravely and bluntly told me and my want to be running buddies, ‘I have a deadly disease. If we don’t find a cure for Leukemia, I and 1000’s more like me will die from this horrible cancer.’ She proceeded to tell me about the effects of Leukemia, the sordid details of radiation, chemotherapy, and the toll of living daily with the label of cancer. A voice from deep inside me said, ‘THIS IS IT!’ Even more bluntly the voice said, ‘Kenna is going to die!’ Running a marathon had always been on my bucket list. The reality of how I could do my part in helping Kenna and personally achieve “marathoner status” brought up a radical sense of responsibility and self-leadership. I moved from simply wanting to run to being willing to run. I had entered the Passion Zone. Passion had propelled me out of my comfort zone into a space where I believed I could run a marathon. In the passion zone, you can see three perspectives clearly. The Introspective: A view of the future as if you have already accomplished your goal. In the passion zone, you have a heightened ability to imagine. I had clarity. I could see a healthy Kenna free from Leukemia and I envisioned myself leaner, faster, and healthier as well. The Retrospective: A view from the future back to the present unveiled exactly what I need to do accomplish the marathon. I began to see clearly my to-do list, the sense of urgency and the tangible steps to achieve my goal. The Prospective: A magical combination of both the introspective and the retrospective that creates new energy or willingness to execute my to-do list. Fueled with passion, I researched how to complete a marathon. I bought books on running. They told me how to train, how to eat, how to hold my form, and even how to plan for potty breaks. Book or no book, the reality was I must simply be willing to run. That is the secret. You must be willing! You must harness passion when it manifests. Willingness is a principle that simply states: You must be willing to do whatever it takes to reach your goal. And contrary to popular thought, what you read in a how-to book or have heard before, that’s it. Willingness demands nothing more from you. Our culture has an “action” agenda. We are doers. We believe to accomplish something, we must do something. This is indeed

valuable but only to a certain point: the point where physical action cannot accomplish a goal. When it comes to getting results, passionate intention is more important than action. You must be willing. Willingness is a frame of mind, which is open to every possible demand, without judgment, reservation, or refusal. Because it is an open state of mind, it has great power. Willingness must govern our passionate desires for a specific outcome. What wrecks you about the world? The disease? The injustice? The unloved? Expose yourself to a cause that ignites a radical sense of responsibility. Allow your passion to move you through the three perspectives willingly. How might you love deeply into the future by entering the passion zone? Nicole Greer, PPCC is a professional life and business coach. “Should I Convert to a Roth-IRA?”

Sweeping U.S. Tax Law Changes for Roth-IRA beginning Jan1, 2010 favor doing a Roth-IRA Conversion in 2010 to get additional tax-free income that can stretch your retirement money further. David Hudson is a Certified Estate Planner, and a Registered Financial Consultant. He is the President of Master’s Estate and Financial Services. He has served the Catawba Valley area for over twenty-four years. Q. Isn’t there a limit on who, or the amount you can convert, to Tax-Free Income? A. There are NO RESTRICTIONS on the amount you can convert in 2010. Q. I have heard there is an extra-conversion tax you have to pay up front? A. Contrary to what you’ve heard, it is NOT EXTRA. This money will be taxed someday. You can convert and pay the taxes due today or don’t convert and pay the taxes in the future. Q. But I don’t have that extra money lying around right now... A. Because of the special advantages for converting to 2010, you can skip payments for up to *2 1/2 years. And only pay 1/2 the amount in two payments. Q. What happens if income tax rates go up? A. If you think your personal tax rates are going to go up (and there may be good reason for that) it is best to convert now while taxes are at their lowest in years. Q. But I still have to pay taxes on Social Security benefits. I really hate that. A. Changing to a Roth-IRA can actually reduce or eliminate paying taxes on Social Security Benefits altogether! Q. What about the required minimum distributions. Do I still have to take those? A. When you convert to a Roth-IRA you no longer have to take forced withdrawals. And can leave them to accumulate for interest that can be income tax-free. Q. Fact is, I really don’t need additional income from those withdrawals. A. Then you’re in luck. You can use the Roth-IRA to grow a large cash reserve (using the extra tax free interest or earnings) to pass on to your spouse, children and grandchildren 100% income TAX free for generations which will provide for their retirement. Or you can use the money yourself to pay for any unexpected catastrophic event such as nursing home costs, etc.

Retirement Account

he advantages and disadvantages of traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs are particularly popular subjects these days. Before discussing those advantages and disadvantages there are two basic facts we need to understand. First, when dealing with finances there is rarely one plan that is good for everyone. Second, The letters IRA stand for Individual Retirement Account. An IRA can be invested in a multitude of different investment vehicles. For example IRA funds could be invested in CDs, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or annuities. An IRA is not an investment vehicle itself. This article is not meant to discuss specific investments. When a person starts a traditional IRA they receive a tax deduction from their earned income. Each following year the person has earned income they may make deposits into the account of up to $ 5,000 or $ 6,000 if they are over age 50. In exchange for the tax deductions the person agrees to certain rules. For example if withdrawals are taken before age 59 ½ they must pay income tax on the amount withdrawn, plus a 10% penalty to the government. When a person reaches age 70 ½ they must take withdrawals from the account, call required minimum distributions. Failing to take these withdrawals will cause the person to pay tax on the amount the government requires to be withdrawn plus a 50% penalty. Since the money in the account has never had taxes paid on it, both the deposits and the gains are all taxable when it’s withdrawn. It’s all taxable, and taxes have to be paid sooner or later. On the other hand a person depositing money into a Roth IRA does not receive a tax deduction for their contribution. However, like the Traditional IRA the money can be deposited into any of several investments vehicles. Once the deposit is made it can grow INCOME TAX FREE provided it stays there at least 5 years and it is taken out for any one of four qualifying events. The events are; the death of the owner, the owner reaches age 59 ½, the owner becomes disabled, or the owner makes a first time home purchase. Under any of these circumstances the money can be taken from the account without paying income tax on it. In addition to the tax free benefit there are two other enticements to have a Roth over a Traditional IRA. Roth IRAs have no required minimum distribution. The account can accumulate untouched until the person’s death if they choose. Also if a person has earned income and are over the age of 70 ½ they can continue to make deposits into their Roth IRA. With all the benefit’s a Roth IRA offers, many people are considering converting their traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs. Up until this year anyone with taxable income over $100,000 wasn’t allowed to convert. This year they can also take advantage of the benefits. When a traditional IRA is converted to a Roth the amount converted becomes taxable. However, conversions made in 2010 can be taxed over a two year period. This article is meant to give a overview of the subject and not meant to give individual advice or be exhaustive . For personalized advice please see your tax advisor or someone knowledgeable about taxation of retirement benefits.

Homebuyer Tax Credit Extended The economic downturn of the last 12-18 months has left many businesses and homeowners struggling to stay afloat. For those with real estate holdings, home sales have largely slumped across the United States, where an abundance of unsold properties continue to dot the landscape. In an effort to revitalize the housing industry, The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 established a tax credit for firsttime homebuyers that can be worth up to $7,500. The tax credit has since been increased and extended through the The Worker, Homeownership and Business Assistance Act of 2009, signed into law on November 6, 2009. It extended and expands the first-time homebuyer credit allowed by previous acts. According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the new Act extends the deadline for qualifying home purchases from November 30, 2009, to April 30, 2010. Additionally, if a buyer enters into a binding contract by April 30, 2010, the buyer has until June 30, 2010, to settle on the purchase. The maximum credit amount remains at $8,000 for a first-time homebuyer -- that is, a buyer who has not owned a primary residence during the three years up to the date of purchase. The Act also extends to homeowners who have been in a primary residence for five years or more and are looking to purchase a different primary residence. This is a “long-time resident” credit of up to $6,500. To qualify this way, a buyer must have owned and used the same home as a principal or primary residence for at least five consecutive years of the eight-year period ending on the date of purchase of a new home as a primary residence. The new law also raises the income limits for people who purchase homes after November 6. The full credit will be available to taxpayers with modified adjusted gross incomes (MAGI) up to $125,000, or $225,000 for joint filers. Those with MAGI between $125,000 and $145,000, or $225,000 and $245,000 for joint filers, are eligible for a reduced credit. Those with higher incomes do not qualify. For those who have been on the fence about purchasing a home, these tax credits could be the incentive needed. Buyers with qualifying purchases in 2010 have the option of claiming the credit on either their 2009 or 2010 tax returns. To learn more about the act and first-time homebuyer incentives, visit www.irs.gov.

Women’s

Hearts

Are Different Women and men are different in so many ways!

Once thought to be the same but simply smaller than men, women are finally being recognized as being different in body, mind and spirit! We laugh and cry at different things and we even tend to enjoy and excel at different activities. From the chemical make-up in our brains to our physical bodies, we are different than men…and our hearts are no exception! Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women, regardless of race. It is more fatal than all forms of cancer combined and claims the lives of nearly 350,000 women every year. Why? l

l

l

l

l

Women typically develop heart disease later on in life when they may already be living with other health conditions, such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s. These health conditions can mask the signs and symptoms of heart disease. Women are more likely to have less obvious heart attack symptoms, such as shoulder pain, nausea, vomiting and heart flutters. Since women do tend to experience “innocent” chest pain, physicians are more likely to ignore them as possible signs of heart disease. Most of the research conducted so far has been on men…new studies, however, are targeting women to advance diagnosis and treatment of their special and gender-specific needs. Scientists are studying whether women’s smaller blood vessels (due to their smaller bodies) increase their heart disease risk since blood has a more difficult time passing through narrowed or smaller vessels, making them more vulnerable to blockage. Women tend to seek medical treatment later than men but ensure their husbands and fathers never miss an appointment! The Spirit of Women® Hospital Network is a coalition of hospitals and healthcare providers across the United States that ascribe to the highest standards of excellence in women’s health, education, and community outreach.

pg 20 / Feb 2010 / Sophie Woman’s Magazine

Heart disease is one of the most preventable health concerns. Take action and make an investment in your heart health! Remember: one of the reasons this disease fatally affects more women than men is that women are reluctant to put themselves and their needs first. If this sounds like you, keep in mind that your family needs you to be healthy! The following can protect you from heart disease as well as improve you overall health: l

Partner with your doctor. Keep a list of signs and symptoms you feel may be indicators of heart

disease (such a fatigue, lightheadedness, chest, neck or jaw pain, nausea or trouble breathing) and discuss your family history of heart disease. Have your blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure checked regularly – stay on top of your heart health with your physician! n

Control other health conditions that increase your risk: n

n

l

High blood pressure makes the heart work harder than normal. Women have increased risk of developing high blood pressure if they are 20 or more pounds overweight, have a family history for it or have reached the age of menopause (more than 73% of women aged 65-74 have high blood pressure). Cholesterol is a soft fat-like substance found in all the body’s cells. Abnormal blood cholesterol levels can lead to plaque building up on and within the artery walls, causing them to narrow or “shrink”, which can reduce blood flow.

Avoid smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. Women who smoke risk the occurrence of a heart

attack 19 years earlier then non-smoking women. l

l

Limit alcohol (no more than 1 drink a day). Drinking too much raises blood pressure and triglyceride levels and can cause heart failure. Maintain a healthy weight. Two-thirds of Americans are overweight and one-third are obese. Don’t become a “yo-yo” dieter; lose the excess fat and keep it off – for good.

l

Eat a balanced diet of foods that are rich in nutrients. Focus on fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole

grains, nuts and seeds. Avoid saturated fats, found in animal products, and trans fats, found in fried and processed foods, and monitor your sodium intake.

l

Enjoy 20-30 minutes of exercise most days of the week. Exercise refreshes the system, flushes out tox-

ins, gets our hearts and lungs pumping and clears and recharges the mind – get moving! l

Reduce stress! Take time out of the day for yourself: A simple 10 minutes of quiet time to rest and breathe deeply is an easy and effective method to melt away tension and stress. Massage, meditation, or a fabulous night out are also great ways to reduce stress.

You can greatly improve your longevity and quality of life by taking care of your heart and your overall health!

Emergency! Emergency! by Sharon Jaynes

Today’s Truth

I laid back down complaining and grumbling. “Lord, why is it that people won’t go to the doctor regularly but only want help on demand when they have an emergency?”

Friend To Friend

When I got quiet enough to listen, I heard God’s still small voice whisper to my heart - “Now you know how I feel.”

“Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always” (Psalm 105:4NIV). My husband, Steve, graduated from dental school in 1981. For the first two years, I was his only employee: his dental hygienist, dental assistant, receptionist, and insurance clerk. On the days that I was not helping him, I worked for another dentist in town. I was so exhausted most of the time that our joke became, “Sharon works six days a week and cries on the seventh.” One thing that amazed me, in starting a new practice, was all the emergency phone calls that Steve received on nights and weekends. I usually answered the phone and asked the caller several questions, one of which was, “Mrs. Jones, how long have you been having this problem?” Invariably the patient would say, “three days,” “two weeks,” “a month.” I always thought, “So why did you wait until Saturday to call?” Of course, being the sweet person that I am, I never said that. One night the phone rang at about 2:00 a.m. I groggily picked up the phone and managed a weak, “Hello.” “Hello,” the woman on the other end stated. “My son is having a terrible toothache. Is the doctor in?” Where did she think he would be, other than “in” at 2:00 in the morning? “Yes ma’am, he is. How long has this tooth been bothering your son?” “Oh, I’d say for about two weeks,” she answered. So why did you wait until now to call (thought, not said, of course). I spoke with this mother for a few more minutes. Something about this call signaled a red flag in my mind. Then I asked, “Ma’am, how old is your son?” “Twenty-seven,” She answered. “My son is twenty-seven-yearsold.” I was so shocked that I quickly sat up in the bed, accidentally jerking the phone cord out of the wall, and disconnecting the caller. She did not call back. I had envisioned a distraught mother with a crying five year old. But twenty-seven? Oh my.

Let’s Pray

Dear Father, I am so sorry that I tend to come to You only when I have an emergency. I know that You long for me to come to You every day simply to tell you how much I love You and how thankful I am for all You do for me. Today, I want to say just that...I love You. Thank You for Your loving kindness toward me, Your little child. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

I hope you laughed at today’s devotion...at least cracked a smile. Doesn’t God have a wonderful sense of humor? Now let’s think about the lessons learned. • Do you tend to pray more often when you are in need? • If you are a parent, how would you feel if your child only talked to you when he or she needed something? • As a parent, what sort of conversations do you long for? What does your heart good? Now, what do you think Your Heavenly Father longs to hear from you? I always love to hear your thoughts. Come by for a visit at www. facebook.com/sharonjaynes More From The Girlfriends This devotion was taken from Sharon’s book, Becoming a Woman who Listens to God. If you would like to make hearing from God a daily experience in your life, then this book will sharpen your spiritual ears!

The Secret Ingredient To Success

B

efore I started my business, I met with a financial advisor to discuss my plans to leave corporate America and start a business coaching practice. He told me I was crazy to leave the safety of big business. I had a good income, stock options, insurance and a great future. I explained that I hated my job. He told me to stick it out and think about my family obligations. I sat there for a moment and then looked him eye to eye and said, “You’re absolutely right. I do need to do the right thing for my family and that is to follow my passion. If I stay in my job I have resigned myself to an unhappy, unsatisfied and unfulfilled life. That is no way to live. I am going to live my life on my own terms and as long as I do, I can’t fail.” I have devoted my life since to helping people find their passion. I believe that for someone to be happy, they need to have passion for what they are doing. Passion is the driving force that excites someone to get up every day and put in their best effort. It is the reason why a person keeps going and holds on to their dreams when so many others have quit. Passion motivates a person to do their best. I believe it is one of the elements of success that can’t be measured through any traditional test but should never be discounted. So what should we do when the passion begins to fade? Many times this happens because the daily activity of running a business overwhelms us. We find ourselves putting out fires and not being able to do the activities that we enjoy. I see this with my clients and it is usually the result of the owner trying to do too much. They are either failing to use their team effectively by not delegating tasks or they need to add to their team in order to allow them to do more important tasks. I help my clients realize this by taking them through a process of remembering why they started their business. What is it that they really want to do every day when they come to work? Once we identify what it is that they love to do, their reason for owning and running their business, we develop a plan to allow them to do more of those activities. This brings their passion back into their business and professional life. This process always results in improvements in revenue because when we do what we love, we do it with more energy, excitement and better than someone who doesn’t have passion for the job. I believe that reigniting your passion can help move your business from survival to an unmitigated success. I would love the opportunity to do this with your business. If you have lost your passion for your business and feel like you are just going through the motions, please call me and let me help get your love life back in order. Hit By Cupid's Arrow

Cupid is a symbol of Valentine’s Day, but many do not know how this winged matchmaker came to be associated with the holiday. Do you believe in love at first sight? How many friends or relatives have said they met their dream guy or gal by a chance encounter of eyes meeting across the room? Perhaps Cupid played a role --shooting his arrow and finding a target.

Cupid is represented in several ways. But the best-known image of Cupid is a winged, naked boy shooting arrows to join potential lovers together. Cupid has two types of arrows he can set sail. Goldtipped arrows are what links people in love. However, Cupid also has a devious side. He can fire lead-tipped arrows, which cause people to feel hatred. This side of Cupid is little-known. Cupid is the son of Venus in Roman mythology. Greek myths called him Eros, and he was the son of Aphrodite. Stories say that Venus, the goddess of love and beauty became jealous with a mortal woman named Psyche. She ordered her son to punish the mortal. However, Cupid became enamored with Psyche and married her instead. But being a mortal, Psyche was not able to look at her husband. She resisted until one day her sisters persuaded her to look at him, wondering why he’d want to hide himself from her. Upon doing so, Cupid punished Psyche by leaving her and making all of their belongings vanish. Psyche wandered looking for her lost love. She eventually came upon the temple of Venus and wanted to plead her case and apologize. However, Venus was still jealous of Psyche. Venus ordered her to complete dangerous tasks to try and win back Cupid, in an effort to destory the mortal. In one of her tasks -- a visit to Pluto in the underworld -- Psyche failed and fell under a deadly slumber. Cupid was beside himself, found Psyche and rescued her. Both Cupid and Venus forgave Psyche. Eventually the rest of the gods -- moved by Psyche’s devotion -- made her a goddess. Today Cupid is the mascot of Valentine’s Day. His mischievous or devious nature is downplayed, and he is best known as an adorable matchmaker with heart-tipped arrows. You can evoke Cupid this Valentine’s Day by drawing arrow-pierced hearts on steamed-up mirrors in the bathroom for your mate to discover. Or send Valentines with hearts and arrows as the theme.***

(StatePoint) The human race has conquered land, sea, air and space, yet many of us still have trouble maintaining strong, healthy relationships. Whether it’s high-profile cases of celebrity infidelity or troubles in one’s own home, marriage is an inexact science. By following some advice from experts and with some effort, being a better spouse is possible:

Be Organized

Keeping your spouse happy is a big part of maintaining your end of the bargain. In some cases, this can be done simply by keeping a schedule and remembering key dates. Birthdates and anniversaries are givens, but a simple reminder to get your better half a gift to commemorate a less-obvious occasion can go a long way. Is next week the anniversary of the first time you went bowling? Why not reserve a lane?

How To Be A Better Spouse

Learn From Others’ Mistakes

With a media industry fascinated by scandal, there are constant reminders of how NOT to conduct healthy relationships. From presidents to sports heroes to movie stars, the infidelities keep on coming. With gossip coverage comes at us from all sides, you can learn a lot from other people’s transgressions. “Scandals serve as distractions or entertainment. They are a popular form of rejoicing in the misery of others. But regular people actually can learn from the mistakes of celebrities,” says writer David Rosen, whose years of research culminated in his new book, “Sex Scandal America: Politics & the Ritual of Public Shaming.” “What qualifies as a scandal changes over time, but what isn’t ending anytime soon, is America’s unquenchable thirst to consume the revealing details of how a politician, business tycoon, athlete or celebrity sabotages his or her career with infidelity,” he adds.

Shut Up and Listen

You may have heard this one before. It’s an old standby, quickly forgotten. Even in a nice, respectful relationship, at some point one party will need to vent frustrations, whatever they may be. If that person happens to be your spouse, close your mouth and listen to what he or she has to say. Remembering those grievances can come in handy later.

Beware Of the Road

If you are away from your spouse for business or pleasure, steer free of temptation. Many celebrities and politicians have committed betrayals away from home, notes “Sex Scandal America” author Rosen. “Powerful people and ordinary Americans aren’t all that different,” he says. “You need to be the same person in your living room and on the road.”

Happy Wife, Happy Life

The phrase may have been coined by Aristotle, or perhaps Gandhi. Either way, it’s a mantra that has served countless husbands for years. When all else fails, many husbands simply refer to this fine point. Of course, the expression serves true for wives, as well. Unfortunately, nothing rhymes with husband. Some of the finer points of marriage can get lost in our overwhelming daily routines. But with a conscious, patient mind, being a better spouse can become easier. ***

FATHER KNOWS BEST LINES

by Judy Smith

Have you been holding your breath in anticipation of what hap-

pened the next day? If you don’t know what I am talking about then it means you did not read my last month’s article and shame on you! Actually, the shame was on me for disobeying my father. That old adage of “Father Knows Best”....yep it is almost always true. So here I was, at the beach, completely against my father’s orders but I finally found the house my friend and her family was in. Spent the night just as planned and the next afternoon, they took me to the bus station to catch the bus I was to ride into Hickory. You have to picture this! A young, naïve, country girl that had never stepped foot out of Catawba County unless it was with adult family members, all alone getting on a bus to Hickory! The only bus I had ever been on was a school bus! I didn’t know what to expect. I climb aboard; get a window seat and who sat down beside me? A dirty old man; or at least that is what I came to believe by the time we reached the Charlotte bus station for a change over for another bus. This man had to have been at least 40 years Old. I said he was old! With lots of empty seats, I could not figure out why he sits down beside me. At first it seemed innocent enough. My father always fussed at me for being so friendly. Don’t talk to strangers and quit smiling at everyone you see. We always went “to town” on Friday mornings and when school was out, I always wanted to go, just in case I would get something. You know the old saying, “you snooze...you lose”. I would smile at everyone we passed and always said good morning. So when someone on a bus wants to talk, I figured it was a good way to pass the time. That was until he started asking where I was going, where I lived, who was meeting me and other questions I didn’t feel comfortable giving answers to. He also told me where he was going, so I, being very naïve, answered most of his questions. How could I not answer without it appearing like I was a rude person? But then....when we got to Charlotte, it was getting late and I had to wait for another bus to get me to Hickory. We were told the café was open and we could wait there. Here I am thinking, finally, I am going to get away from this guy, so I go in the café, take a seat at a booth and you know what happened? I think I will make you wait till next month. Just kidding! He comes in, sits down across the booth from me and informs me he has traded his ticket and now he is going to Hickory. Panic has now overtaken me and I am just struggling to figure out what to do. How was I going to feel if this man killed me and my dad wanted to kill me because I disobeyed? So I did the only thing I could do. I called my sweet uncle who was an over the road truck driver and prayed he was home. He had just got in from a trip and was in bed. After all, it was getting late now. My uncle said he would come get me and wanted to know if I saw anyone there he could talk with. I told him there was a security guard and my uncle told me to lay the phone down and go ask the security guard to come to the phone. I have no idea what that conversation consisted of but that secu-

rity guard stayed close by till my uncle got there. It took quite a bit longer to drive to Charlotte back in those days with the old two lane highway 16, so I had quite a wait. I think everyone in the place knew when my uncle arrived. He was quite a commanding presence...tall, rugged and handsome. He was my rescuer that night. He walked up to the booth I was sitting in and with a demanding voice said “let’s go!” The other man stood up to say something to my uncle and all I could do was just close my eyes. He didn’t hit him like I thought he was going to...like I know he wanted to. He just told that “dirty old man” that he better sit back down in that seat and not say another word. With that, the security guard walked over and told my uncle that he had kept his eyes on us As a the whole time. My uncle shook his hand and out we went. Phar You are dying to know if I got a lecture, aren’t you? The answer cares is no. My sweet uncle delivered me safely to my house and I was in Beca the bed, sound asleep, when my dad arrived home from a three day powe fishing trip to the coast. My uncle never told him about it either. I make sure learned a lesson from this and I am pretty sure my uncle did too.k n o w med After all, he had two daughters that were younger than me! ***

(StatePoint) Many experts have shared their conclusions about how cable television and the Internet have kept countless Americans on their behinds for longer periods of time. Ironically, while all this has been going on, scientists have been discovering the most about health and exercise -- and how staying active can ward off a range of illnesses as we age. What it comes down to is this: there are fewer and fewer excuses for letting your body run its course without exercise. For seniors, in particular, exercise has been linked to reduced risk for such ailments as prostate cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease and stroke, among others. There has been much new research on the topic, with all signs pointing seniors to the exercise mat and away from the couch. Indeed, with one out of six men confronting prostate cancer at some point in life, the Prostate Cancer Foundation recently released a new “Nutrition, Exercise, and Prostate Cancer” guide, a series of new strategies that help stem the development and progression of prostate cancer. Visit www.pcf.org to order or download a free copy of the guide. The key is combining exercise with a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in processed sugars and refined carbohydrates. A new study from Dr. Stephen Freedland at Duke and the Durham Veterans Affairs Hospital also underscores the impact regular exercise has in protecting men from prostate cancer, while also making the disease less aggressive. More than anything else, the combination of diet and exercise looks to be a strong pre-emptive step against many ailments. With breast cancer a similarly daunting disease among women, healthy options unsurprisingly have been linked to lifestyle, particularly exercise and nutrition. With as little as four hours of exercise a week and a low-fat diet, the risk of breast cancer can be lessened. Abstaining from drinking alcohol has also been shown to decrease the risk of breast cancer. And there are plenty of ailments that plague both older men and women that can be helped by exercise. Among them is osteoporosis, which affects the bone density of people as they age. By focusing on exercises that have a direct impact on the skeleton, like basketball or jumping jacks, the symptoms of osteoporosis can be avoided. New research also shows it’s never too late for seniors to become active. Even those afflicted with Type 2 diabetes can help turn things around with an exercise regimen. And it’s well-known that exercise can help strengthen arteries and potentially reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Of course, before starting any diet or exercise program, seniors should consult their doctors. But when it comes to health, a small series of simple lifestyle changes can help extend your body’s warranty, making a world of difference in your golden years.***

FAMILY FEATURES

n-the-go families need easy ways to make healthy eating part of the everyday routine. There’s a little fruit that can do just that. California mandarins are a cross between a sweet orange and a Chinese mandarin, and are harvested from mid-October through April. Sweet, seedless and easy to peel, mandarins offer a variety of nutrients per serving, including fiber, potassium, protein, calcium, vitamin C and folate. A single serving of mandarins (2 whole) has only 80 calories and provides nearly 300 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C. California mandarins are great for snacking, but the pint-sized fruit can also be a tasty and healthy addition to simple, everyday meals. Incorporating mandarins into beverages, salads or yogurt snacks boosts nutritional value and brings the sweet, citrusy taste of summer during the winter months. Try these quick and easy recipes and make mandarins part of your family’s nutrition routine. For more information, visit www.cutiescitrus.com.

Snacking

Ginger Mandarin Bites

Makes about 44 pieces 4 fresh mandarins, peeled and separated into segments 8 ounces spreadable cream cheese 1/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup minced crystallized ginger Fresh mandarin peel, thinly sliced, for garnish In small bowl, stir together cream cheese, ginger and sugar. Spread about 1 1/2 teaspoons cream cheese mixture on each mandarin segment; arrange on a serving plate. Garnish with mandarin peel. Grilled Shrimp and Mandarin Black Bean Salad

Select a mandarin that is firm and heavy for its size. Make sure that it doesn’t have soft spots or wrinkled skin. Check its scent — it should smell good, not rotten or fermented. Mandarins make a great midday snack. The compact, easy-to-peel treats can reinvigorate you during that all day meeting or be the perfect fuel for an after-school soccer practice. Mandarins make a great travel companion. Easy to eat and pack, mandarins will curb hunger during long car rides or unexpected flight delays. Keep a bowl of colorful mandarins and other fruit at eye-level in the kitchen to easily persuade snackers to select a healthier option.
