Fall Prevention * Keep Moving - Physical activity can go a long way toward fall prevention. With your doctor’s OK, consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi — a gentle exercise that involves slow and graceful dance-like movements. Such activities reduce the risk of falls by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. * Wear Sensible Shoes - Consider changing your footwear as part of your fall-prevention plan. High heels, floppy slippers and shoes with slick soles can make you slip, stumble and fall. So can walking in your stocking feet. Instead wear properly fitting, sturdy shoes with nonskid soles.
* Remove Home Hazards - Take a look around your home and remove electrical cords and phone cords from walkways, and secure loose rugs with doublefaced tape, tacks or a slip-resistant backing — or just remove loose rugs from your home * Use Assistive Devices - such as a cane or walker to keep you steady. Other assistive devices can help, too. For example: hand rails for both sides of stairways, non-slip treads for bare-wood steps, a raised toilet seat or one with armrests, and grab bars for the shower or tub

MY CUP RUNNETH OVER.....that is why my eyes are leaking . Not tears of sadness but tears of overwhelmed joy. The response I have received over the turnover of Sophie Woman’s Magazine to someone else has humbled me beyond what mere words can express. You have loved me for many years....and I have loved you back. Time passes quickly and honestly, I feel like I have only been doing this for a few years. I started with a prayer and just the strong belief that I could do this, IF IT WAS GOD’S WILL.. Obviously, it was. Month after month, more and more readers were picking it up, passing it on and loving the message. We gained faithful advertisers who believed in us and some of them have been with us from the very beginning. Our contributing writers have had to “put-up” with my craziness at times, with crazy schedules, with changing word counts and still stuck with us. How do you say thanks to all of that? You went with me through the building years and then you traveled along on my journey with Breast Cancer. You supported me, you sent me loving tips and encouraging words, but most of all you loved me through it with your prayers. Our staff supported it all when I was not able to get out of bed when I was having the chemo treatments and then the radiation. Some have changed over the years but everyone that ever helped us out, added value to us. Thank you to all the past and present employees. Then my husband had a couple of very bad years with his health. Honestly, that was as hard on me as my cancer was. I would take care of him in the mornings, then leave him in the bed so I could take care of business, to return to take care of him in the evening and through the night. I shared with you how really hard it was for me to be doing EVERYTHING. Hauling off trash is not that hard until you add it to everything else that has to be done. You even loved me through all of that and you helped “lift me up”. If it was not for YOU, and I mean every single one of you.....I am not sure I would have had the strength to get through it all. I know my
strength comes from God but He gave me you and I thank Him for it.
So what about the future? There are two futures.....One for Sophie Woman’s Magazine and one for me. So many people have told me their concern over losing the message that Sophie Woman’s Magazine puts out. I want to assure you that will not change. If you remember, I told you one of the requirements of selling the magazine was to be guaranteed that the format would stay the same and it will. So please, just as you have always done, share the stories, share your stories and keep reading. You really will not see any changes but you will see more exciting things happening. As for me.....first I do have to say, we are not promised a tomorrow but as long as I am still breathing on this earth, you will still see me. I will continue to be a small part of Sophie Woman’s Magazine, I am still going to write articles and you will still see me out and about. Retirement? That is not really a word that is in my vocabulary. I am just changing some of my directions. Most of you know I have done Inspirational, Motivational speaking for years but I just want to do a little more of that. I still have a message to share with the world.....at least to our area. Okay, don’t laugh. I want to write a book. I know lots of people say that but I really do. It is in my mind but not down on paper yet. I do not know what might transpire with it but again, just like with Sophie Woman’s Magazine, it will be God’s and He can do what He wants with it. Yet, I have made several close friends and family give me their word that they will buy a copy so I can say I sold some! Sophie Woman’s Magazine is in good hands but I need a favor from you....all of you whom I have loved and who have loved me. Will you love the new ownership like you have loved me. Will you support them like you have supported me? So keep reading my articles, watch for me and remember I still love hugs and I still love you!

REACHING YOUR FULL POTENTIAL: How Do You Fall?
by Kim Fletcher, Life Coach, Speaker, Author One word is all it takes for the world to recognize it. RIO!
When you hear that one simple word, you automatically think of the 2016 Summer Olympics whether you are into sports or not. A few nights ago, I was watching the Olympics with my family when Mo Farah of Great Britain was in the line up to run the men’s 10,000 meter race. I watched as his powerful stride was positioning him to advance into a strong position on the track when the unthinkable happened. He tripped and fell into the other runners. That moment created chaos as other runners were knocked off balance and even had to jump over his flailing body to keep from falling too. Something in my DNA has always loved the underdog. So I watched with a new interest as he pulled himself to his feet after the pack had left him behind and he began to run again. My inner cheerleader was so glad to see that he intended to cross that finish line despite being defeated. I never even imagined what was actually about to take place. As I cheered him on to an honorable, but certainly not a medal-winning finish, I noticed him advancing. First, he came up toward the back of the other runners. Then with a new passion in his stride, his dark, lean legs seemed to be reaching with each step for an impossible dream. I quickly recognized that he was running to WIN despite his tragic setback. My inner cheerleader admired his grit even more, but I still did not see what he was seeing. He intended to WIN!
The champion that had been embedded into his Olympic-quality DNA obviously believed he could still win. If not, he would have crossed the finish line casually. But he was running as if his life was held in that one moment in time. The crowd began to react and the impossible occurred. After a full fall that had him rolling on the track, Farah came back to win the GOLD! I’m sure many of you were watching this moment in Olympic history. I’m capturing it here for one simple reason. While I found myself cheering him on, it occurred to me that his win holds a coaching challenge for each of us. How do you fall? What do you do when a moment in life leaves you feeling that you have missed the mark? How do you react when you feel that your moment has passed you by? If you did not see this great moment unfold, I would challenge you to look it up on the internet. Then, turn the camera on yourself. Olympic athletes prepare their whole lives for one moment in the spot light. Much like those athletes, we spend much of our lives preparing as we advance our education and learn from our life experiences. As you watch Farah fall, then get up and push in to win against all odds, I want you to coach yourself on what to do the next time you miss the mark. I am realizing that I have spent much of my life being very hard on myself when I don’t measure up. If Farah had stopped on the track to mentally criticize himself, he would have lost precious milliseconds and would have surely lost. If he had stopped to see what the crowd was yelling over him, he would also have delayed long enough to never be able to recover that win. You and I need to adopt his Olympic attitude and determine, the next time we fall, to get back up and keep running. Keep pressing in. Keep believing in yourself and in the training that has propelled you to this moment in time. Just like many well-trained athletes, we were all created for greatness. Here is the difference. Instead of one moment in time, we have friends and family watching us all of the time. Our example is on display daily, not just in the season when the Olympics roll around. It is time to embrace our destiny to lead others to greatness. Farah was fast and he did win. But I believe his greatest accomplishment that day was the mental battle he overcame in a split second that made it possible for him to accomplish the impossible. Sometimes, we are our own worst enemy when perhaps we should be working to become our own best cheerleader. It isn’t a failure to fall. It’s a failure when you give up and stop trying! So embrace your inner Olympian and keep pressing onward. The best is yet to come. Kim Fletcher learned a few years ago that a “FLETCHER” is an arrow maker. This is fitting as she launches clients toward their true IDENTITY and DESTINY. As a coach and leader of global impact, Kim seeks to make a lasting difference as she shares principles of true transformation with individuals and groups internationally. Have an Unmistakeable Brand

ust like the grocery store has an overwhelming variety of choices for any one item you might need, you live in a world where the competition to be chosen for the job, the loan, the business, or the relationship is challenging. What sets one ketchup apart from another isn’t usually the actual quality of the ketchup but instead it is the brand that sets it apart. The same is true for you! If you create a brand for yourself that makes people stop and notice who you are and what you have to offer, you will become sophisticated, a Sophie Woman. Creating a personal brand with intention will increase your influence. You’ll find yourself in leadership roles, moving up in your organization, and sought out for your wisdom, opinions, and expertise. Ultimately, you’ll experience collaboration and synergy at a whole new level. Your goals will become attainable. What’s even more fun? You find yourself helping others reach theirs! Let’s get started! The small business dictionary defines a brand as: The marketing practice of creating a name, symbol or design that identifies and differentiates a product from other products . An effective brand strategy gives you a major edge in increasingly competitive markets. Getting ahead, being successful and achieving your goals is going to require you to sell yourself to key stakeholders. You need to know the features, benefits, and outcomes that people experience when they work with you. You must be clear, concise, and clever in the way you differentiate yourself. This will be your “personal brand.” Engage with this four step system for illuminating your personal brand. Step One: Create your personal billboard. What five key words on a billboard describe you? You only get one chance to make a first impression. If you introduced yourself to the world with a billboard, what would it say? Imagine that you walked into a room where everyone knew you but they did not know your name. What adjectives would they use to describe you. I had the privilege of doing this work during my coach training and clarified my unique approach to coaching! When I surveyed my classmates for the words that describe me, they stated I was a ball of energy, fun, an optimist, and creative! While it is often seen as egotistic to celebrate yourself, the fact is you need to own and operate out of your strengths. Hello…these are gifts from your creator! You are not supposed to shrink from back from your gifts. You are called to use them. I crafted a personal billboard that daily I intentionally live into. I invite you to boldly do the same. My Billboard Example: Nicole is an energetic coach who explores with

her clients the “possibilities” in their lives and implements strategies, systems, and smarts to turn what is possible into the probable. Step Two: Take a personality assessment. In my 20’s, I was given the great gift of a personality assessment. The company I worked for, Summit Properties, coached me to see “how I showed up.” This exercise was eye opening. While this assessment celebrated parts of my personality, it also exposed the challenges of how I am hard wired. The process was humbling yet, it made me step back and see where I really needed to adopt some new behaviors so I was healthier in my communication and relationships. Without some self-reflection, truth-telling, and candor, we can move through life oblivious to our impact on others. If our challenges are shored up, we can hold ourselves back from reaching our potential. There is a great free personality assessment tool available that I am glad to share with you. Simply email nicole@ thevibrantcoach.com and I’ll send it to you! Step Three: Consider the quality of your character. Character is all about integrity. Integrity is a strange thing. Individuals believe they have a high degree of integrity, however; integrity comes and goes with each and every thought, action, and deed. There are lists upon lists of character traits on the internet. I suggest you Google one and take a look at the list. Odds are you have some work to do. Again, our personalities can be beautiful but often times they are “overdone” in areas. For example, in my case it is great to be a dreamer, optimistic, and excited about the future. However, the excitement you have for the future does not have any substance if you don’t work diligently, consistently, and prudently in the present on your goals. The character traits of diligence, consistency, prudence are not natural for me! I have to engage my will to do the daily tasks that make an exciting future possible. Step Four: Document your history, create a reputation, and put yourself out there. Warren Buffet stated, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” Let’s do just that. Instead of letting your life unfold, let’s do things differently. Very much on purpose, let’s create your personal brand. If you are a career woman employed by an organization, at all times you need an updated resume. If you are an entrepreneur, you need a beautiful curriculum vitae. If you are job seeker, you need an amazing Linked In page and even a personal website. Today’s technology allows you to present a beautiful image of your value and brand. Working through this four step system for defining your personal brand above in and of itself is self-assessment. Thinking about yourself is not navel gazing. It’s a responsibility to take your gifts and package them for the world to use. I call this mission, purpose, and the ability to SHINE! Commit now to work on your personal brand for the next 21 days. This is habit work. Once you do this work you’ll be in integrity. Clarity on your personal brand will inspire your next right steps and energize you to turn what is possible into what is probable. This is brilliant!
At its deepest level, working with a coach frees you to identify your birthright gifts, discern your deepest passions, and fulfill your highest purpose. A coach can pry you off dead center. As Principal Coach for Vibrant Coaching and Workshop Leader for The Lydia Group, LLC, a collaboration of individuals focused on work, life and spiritual growth, Nicole is on a mission to impact, energize, and influence people to lead a Vibrant Life by engaging the possibilities. As a life and business coach and workshop leader, Nicole views her role as a conduit to release all that you want to achieve. www.thevibrantcoach.com/www.thelydiagroup.com

Let’s Be Encouragers! Today’s Truth
by Mary Southerland
Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints. (Philemon 1:7)
Friend to Friend
I recently read about an African tribe that has what we might consider an unusual approach for dealing with people who make mistakes. When a member of this tribe does something wrong, they take the person to the center of the village where the tribe surrounds him. For two days, they remind him of the good things he has done. The tribe believes that mistakes are often a cry for help, and hope to provide that help through the layers of encouragement they freely give. Dan began making wooden furniture when we lived in South Florida. My job was to stain and finish the pieces after he had completed them. I had never worked with wood or stain and did not know much about how to accomplish the task. But I knew who did. I headed to our local hardware store. I explained to a salesclerk that I wanted to finish some furniture—today. I was in a hurry to place it in just the right spot in the house and wanted to get this staining business over with quickly. He smiled and patiently explained that it takes time to achieve the best finish. He obviously did not understand. Once again I explained my simple plan. Ignoring my words, he said that a beautiful finish requires repeated layers of stain and lacquer with time to dry in between. His last words stayed with me, “There are no shortcuts if you want the final product to be right.” Encouragement is like that. It takes layers of love and great patience to replenish, restore, and put courage back into a heart. Encouragers look for opportunities to work. Every day we cross paths with hurting people. A word of encouragement, an act of kindness, or a caring smile may be enough to keep them on their feet. We all need the closeness of relationship. We all need to know we are loved. We all need encouragement. “Encourage one another daily” (Hebrews 3:13). An encourager is one who knows you as you are, understands where you’ve been, accepts who you’ve become, and still gently invites you to grow. How often do we need to practice encouragement? Daily. Continually. Constantly. The key to constant and daily encouragement is to vary our forms of encouragement and the people who receive that encouragement. Acts 4:36 tells us about a man who came to Christ. His life was changed so dramatically that he sold his land and brought the money to give to God through the early church. That is very impressive. But the most impressive thing about this man called Joseph is that the disciples changed his name. They called him Barnabas, which means “Son of Encouragement.”
pg 10 | Sophie Woman’s Magazine | September 2016
Are you an encourager? Would your friends suggest changing your name? Would your spouse or your children? What about your neighbors or that person in your life who is struggling to find a ray of light in their darkness? The message is clear. Just as Christ has come into our lives to encourage us, we are to give that encouragement away. The most amazing truth is that the more encouragement we give, the more we will receive in the circle of encouragement. Jesus promises, “If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use in giving—large or small—it will be used to measure what is given back to you” (Luke 6:38, nlt). Let’s be encouragers.
Let’s Pray
Father, thank You for the way You are always here for me. Your faithfulness and love overwhelm me. Your Word is a light for every step I take. Your encouragement keeps me on my feet every single day. Lord, I want to give that encouragement away to others. I want to be an encourager to my family, to my friends – to the people You allow to cross my path every day. God, teach me how to be an encourager. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Now It’s Your Turn
Read and memorize 1 Thessalonians 5:11, 14. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up…and we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” How do you rate as an encourager? Which of the following areas do you need to work on in order to give encouragement to the people in your life who need it? ___Demonstrate great patience ___Offer sensitive instruction ___Stay close ___Practice encouragement daily

atching a plane fly over my head while I am sitting on the porch will most definitely have new meaning to me from now on. Today, I experienced the swearing in service of my grandson to the Air Force. There are no words to express the swell of my heart with abounding pride. I am not the first and I will not be the last but this was MY grandson. So now he is off to Texas to start boot camp. We tried to do everything we could to prepare him for this rough new experience. His parents gave him a graduation gift that helped. Someone took him up in an airplane and pushed him out. Yep, his parents paid a lot of money for that....with the hope that someone would make sure he had a safe landing. He did. I am sure the look on his face when he first got ready to jump will be a look he might experience a few times during his training. Then the week before he left, my husband and I took him downtown Mooresville to Richard's Coffee Shop and Living Military Museum. This magazine is supported by paid advertising and is not in the habit of giving what might be construed as free advertising yet every local Vet needs to know about what they do there every Thursday morning. I had posted a photo of Isaac's jump from the plane and told how proud I was of him going to the Air Force. A friend of mine sent me a message that I needed to bring him to the Coffee Shop before he left. I had been trying to get my husband to go there for a couple of years since he is a Vietnam Veteran. When I told him that I was taking Isaac of course he wanted to go along. They sent Isaac off in style and with lots of advice. Don't volunteer for anything, Go to every school you can and get qualified to do anything you can, shut up and listen, you don't make the rules and stay focused. The old Soldiers kept coming up Nicholas Isaac Hansley with their piece of advice

like this one - There will come times when you will want to question why you are doing something, which, in your opinion, is stupid and a waste of your time. Suck it up Soldier! In other words, shut up and listen. Our advice to him....listen to the old Soldiers. They not only offered him advice, they honored him, they gave him things to carry with him and they told him to come back every time he was on leave. He was a part of them now. They did give him a lot more advice but I cannot add it to this article. Just a note: my husband will be going every Thursday he can from now on. Someone did share this joke with him: An Air Force cargo plane was preparing for departure from Thule Air Base in Greenland. They were waiting for the truck to arrive to pump out the aircraft's sewage holding tank. The Aircraft Commander was in a hurry, the truck was late in arriving, and the Airman performing the job was extremely slow in getting the tank pumped out. When the commander berated the Airman for his slowness and promised punishment, the Airman responded: "Sir, I have no stripes, it is 20 below zero, I'm stationed in Greenland, and I am pumping sewage out of airplanes. Just what are you going to do to punish me?" Isaac, please don't volunteer for sewage pumping duty! Next we took him to the shooting range. We rented lanes and guns and we bought ammo and targets. He did not want anything to do with the little hand guns....nope, he wanted the big dogs. I was a little fearful of that but they assured me he would be alright....as long as I signed a waiver! I don't know if you have any idea how much ammo costs but when he was unloading that gun into the target as fast as he could, well, it was a good thing I could just say "CHARGE". He actually was a pretty good shot but after a couple of hours I had to say we were done. Of course he did not want to stop but I reminded him in a few weeks he would be shooting all he wanted on Uncle Sam's dollar. His ambition is to be a pilot but no matter what his station or how he serves, I am one proud Mammaw. Off we go into the wild blue yonder.... Nothing'll stop the US Air Force!

Is more never enough? Do you find that no matter how much more you seem to achieve, accomplish or accumulate, there is still this thirst for more? For many of us, there is great satisfaction in meeting or exceeding our own expectations. Then, as we check a goal off of our lists, we then feel compelled to replace that goal with another loftier goal. And so it goes, as we continue to raise the bar higher … and higher … and higher. For many others, however, their thirst for more is driven by either a perception imposed by others or a deep-seated emotional need that is not being met. When either of these are the underlying reason for achievement, there is always a sense that the void cannot be filled no matter how much more energy is put forth. When more is never enough, an inner turmoil continues to grow affecting one’s ability to truly enjoy life. Not happy enough: Is your need for more linked to an underlying feeling that more will make you happy? The problem with this thinking is that happiness is not something that can be turned on magically. It is something that is felt deep inside you from the core of your being. Instead of associating your happiness with grand achievements and accomplishments, take a moment to define your happiness based on the simple everyday things you can take pleasure in, appreciate, and enjoy. By feeling happy in where you are currently, you are in a better place to accomplish more with pleasure instead of pressure. Not experiencing enough: Are you driven to constantly stay active because you are afraid you might miss out on something? Does the idea of doing “nothing” seem a waste of time and unproductive to you? When you are always on the go, go, go, you are also not giving yourself the ability to recharge in the simplest of ways. In addition to a good night’s sleep, moments of simply being in the moment, appreciating your surroundings and pausing to breathe deep and relax for a few minutes brings a bounty of energy and, oftentimes, insights you may not have experienced had you kept going and going.
pg 14 | Sophie Woman’s Magazine | September 2016
Not acknowledged enough: Are achievements, especially those that offer accolades and public recognition, a means to validate you in some way? Do you find yourself feeling that because certain people in your life don’t acknowledge what you do, you feel a need to achieve certain types of recognition for your own feeling of self-worth? Whether it is more appreciation you seek or simply words of praise, understand that while you cannot control how others act or react, you can control your own thoughts and actions. Instead of focusing on what you are not getting, focus instead on what you can give. What you will find is by acknowledging and appreciating others, you gain great satisfaction from how it is received, and no longer need it for yourself. Not successful enough: Is your need for more driven by the thrill of a challenge or a need to prove something to yourself or more specifically, to others whom you want to impress. Do you link success to material possessions? Do you link success to money and status? When you believe success is based on what you have, then you are allowing others to define success for you on their terms. Success is yours to define. The freedom that comes from releasing expectations imposed by others will enable you to succeed beyond your own imagination simply because you imagined it on your terms and no-one else’s. What I hope you will consider as you assess your reasons for wanting more, is that your need for achievement is a means to helping you grow and continue to evolve in ways that nurture you, fulfill you, and also benefit others in positive, gratifying ways. When you achieve for the greater good of you and others, that’s when continuing to achieve more brings true value.

S.S.U. Suffering State University
by Mary Felkins We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Rom 5:3-4 Suffering is relative, isn’t it? I mean, couldn’t I break a freshly polished fingernail and say I suffered, yet a friend could experience the death of a child and say she’d suffered? Behind it all is a Master Engineer who works all things for His glory and for our good. Always. During a difficult season of suffering that was light years beyond that of a broken fingernail, I was told quite matter-of-factly by a wise and influential woman (If you don’t know one, do what it takes to get one), “You are in suffering school.” I screwed my brows, wondered at that. She was right. Somehow, sometime, without my realization, I’d been registered for this place of higher education and quickly ushered down its narrow hallway. Imagine the conversation with me for a moment: Someone might ask, “So like, where do you go to school?” I’d respond rather glibly, “Um, S.S.U.” They might return a blank stare, their head tilted a little. “That’s like, in California or something?” I’d place a hand against my heart. “Uh uh. It’s right here.”
S.S.U., Suffering State University.
With a name like that, would you apply for admission? Didn’t think so. Me neither. Especially if their school colors are something dreadful like black and…black? However, I regularly find myself enrolled in this place of education. By Divine intervention. And on full scholarship, lavishly paid for by the blood of Jesus. At Suffering State U, I don’t live on campus. Rather, I live in God’s presence…for as many semesters as it takes. My ultimate degree? I’m told it’s holiness. I’m signed up for courses on Perseverance and Character. No easyA’s here. And apparently, these are prerequisites for the one I’m most interested in, called Hope.
We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Rom 5:3-4 Mary Albers Felkins is a former Registered and Licensed Dietitian turned writer. Her first novel, a contemporary Christian romance, is currently under contract with Prism Book Group (www.prismbookgroup.com). She considers scripture the most alluring romance ever written. Married to Bruce Felkins, together they have four (adolescent to young adult-sized) arrows in their quiver. She can be bribed to take a break from writing if chocolate is involved in the negotiation process. For stories that stir the soul, Mary cordially invites you to her website, www.maryfelkins.com

USE WALL COLORS
TO INFLUENCE YOUR GOALS! by Susan Guest, ASID
D
id you know that the color of your kitchen may affect the size of your thighs? Or that the color of your child’s room might affect their learning capacity? Whether your goal is to lose a few pounds or help your child focus on school studies more, color can have a huge influence. If your goal is to be more motivated to exercise, color can affect that too (some of us need all the motivation we can get!) If you wish to lower your stress levels, there are cooling colors that calm your nerves. There are also colors that get you back in touch with nature. You have the entire color spectrum at your fingertips! At different points of our lives, we physically need and crave different colors. People who are aware of their body’s needs tend to automatically select colors that nourish their body. For this reason, it is important to let a child select a color for his or her room. Children seem to choose the colors that will help them heal, grow, think and dream. If the hue is too obnoxious, use it as accents such as pillows or removable wall decals. Color psychology is used on us every day, even though most of us are unaware of this. For example, fast food signs are usually red or yellowcolors that make us want to devour a triple burger, biggie fries, and a large gulp. My kitchen is neither red, nor yellow but I manage to stay hungry enough without color stimulants! At a color seminar a few years ago, I learned that purple is a great color for those of us who often have to switch between left and right sides of the brain (analytical verses creative thinking). Interior designers, engineers, graphic artists and many other professionals should heed this advice. I used this knowledge to explain new clothing purchases to my sweetie! Purple is also a “brain color” that helps children learn faster. It is a great tone to use in rooms that are shared by boys and girls and can mix nicely with brighter colors. Greens and blues, of course, are usually soothing colors-depending on the intensity of the hue. They remind us of nature trails or a walk by the sea. Warm browns and dark greens add an earthiness to our lives and look nice with other colors. These are all colors that bring our stress levels down. That is one reason that the tree house phenomenon has
pg 22 | Sophie Woman’s Magazine | September 2016
been so huge! Our blood pressure goes down when we are surrounded by calm views of nature. Orange is a great color for an exercise room or physical therapy area because it stimulates our muscles. If you have a child with muscular issues, orange can produce great results in healing and movement. Yellow is a happy color and can brighten a dull life. This color, however, can make you hungry. Red causes excitement and increases your heart rate. Red can stimulate your sex life; but can also cause insomnia if used in a bedroom. I had a beautiful sangria red bedroom several years ago, but it tended to be hot. The next paint job was a cool grayish green-much more suited to a good night’s sleep. Use red with caution! Black and white are usually desired by people going through major life transitions such as divorce or troubled times. Greys also fall into this category. All of these neutrals mix well with other colors and can be very fun and graphic if used properly. Each color is special and has its own purpose in reflecting light. Thank God for His ultimate creativity and for healing us with color. Examples of His love are seen in a beautiful sunset, varied hues of a mountain range, and the inspiring rainbow. Let us be mindful of His attention to detail in providing what each of us needs. So get out the paint bucket and change your life! The day is lining up to be a fun filled one, packed with exciting family friendly activities. There will be free trolley and shuttle buses running all day through the heart of the Viewmont community, so you will not have to deal with traffic or with finding that perfect parking space. Designated shuttle stops are being placed along the route, making it easy to visit as many businesses as possible. Café Gouda’s Margie Rapp has been a participant every year. She is pleased with the positive impact the event has on the community. “We are seeing more and more families sharing the day out together. There really is something for everyone, regardless of gender or age.” The Street Strut is designed to allow neighbors to gather and sample the wide assortment of restaurants, shops and services, here in our own back yard. It also showcases many extremely talented artists and musicians who live and work in the area. “We love the community feel of Viewmont. It is impressive how the Street Strut unites together different types of businesses to create a positive experience in the area,” commented Jeri Hartshorn, of Whitfield’s Flowers & More. Every location is doing something different to celebrate the day. Rain or shine, there will be wine tastings, live dancing and musical entertainment, free food, special sale discounts, fun activities for the kids, talented artists and sculptors for all to meet, and so much more! So, plan to start early, and finish late! See you at the Street Strut!

Certain foods are more popular than others, and chicken tenders certainly fall into the “more popular” category. Few can resist chicken tenders, which make for popular pub fare and great additions to any buffet table at informal gatherings of friends and family. While many people only indulge in chicken tenders when they’re out of the house, this simple, beloved dish can be enjoyed at home as well. The following recipe for “PecanCrusted Chicken Tenders” from Michelle Dudash’s “Clean Eating for Busy Families” (Fair Winds Press) is a delicious, lowcalorie alternative to the fried chicken tenders available at many restaurants.

To make the chicken: Preheat the oven to 475 F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Whir pecans, flour, paprika, dry mustard, garlic and onion powder, salt, and pepper in a food processor until pecans are ground to a powder, about 30 seconds. Drizzle in the oil with the motor running, blending completely. Transfer mixture to a shallow dish and stir in the panko bread crumbs. Beat the egg in a second shallow dish and add the chicken tenders, coating them completely. Transfer each tender to the breading, turning to coat evenly. Arrange the chicken on the prepared pan. Bake until golden brown and nearly firm, about 8 minutes. Note: Chicken tenders come from the undersides of chicken breasts and are naturally portioned into strips, saving you time in cutting them. If you don’t have chicken tenders, substitute chicken breasts cut into 4- x 1-inch strips.

omeone sent me a fascinating e mail the other day, about a college professor who passed out exam papers, and on the page, was one big, dark spot. He then asked his students to explain what they saw. Nearly all the class members wrote elaborate descriptions of the dark spot, how it stood out against the white paper, how it got so much attention , there was not enough space for thoughts of anything else. They went on to make up elaborate stories of how the dark spot came into existence, and what could possibly be surmised by it’s presence, and how, we can’t really think of anything else, but the disturbing presence of that dark spot. It obliterates everything else.
One student, however, took another route, about how insignificant the spot was in comparison to all the brightness around it. it could even be compared to the minuteness of planet earth, in the grand scheme of things. This student went on to point out how little that 8:22:37 AMdark spot was when compared to all the brightness and whiteness surrounding it, how truly insignificant it was. The professor was impressed. The meaning of the lesson was, he pointed out, that the dark spot represented all that was negative in our lives; bills, illness, dissension, negative thoughts, whatever is holding you back from happiness and peace of mind, and how we can oftentimes see nothing but the dark spot, as opposed to seeing the brightness around it. We quite often miss the good, by concentrating only on the bad.

Excellent lesson, I thought, and one we all badly need. In this stressful time, we need to concentrate our efforts on the positive, the good, and changing that which we can, so, that our dark spots are completely overshadowed by all the brightness and good in our lives. Heaven knows we need this in today’s world. Starting today, right now, I am going to begin to emphasize the positive, the good, the excellent in today’s world, and hopefully, little by little, change my world. Attitude and action both begin with the same letter -- A--. Capitalize it and go for it !!!
