Thank You for Supporting Local Non-Profits In 2019 seven nonprofit entities based in the Roaring Fork Valley joined together to grow and market Colorado Gives Day throughout the region. This year the membership has grown to over 40 nonprofits from Parachute to Aspen that are committed to improve the lives of people who live and work in our communities. Our coalition of nonprofits has launched a regional campaign called Mountain West Gives to strengthen local participation in the statewide Colorado Gives Day effort. Colorado Gives Day is hosted by Community First Foundation and powered by ColoradoGives.org, a year-round website featuring more than 1,800 nonprofits, statewide. ColoradoGives.org encourages charitable giving by providing comprehensive, objective and up-to-date information about Colorado nonprofits and an easy way to support them online. With generous support from The Sopris Sun, FirstBank of Glenwood Springs, Garfield County Board of County Commissioners, and we are partnering with the Community First Foundation to encourage philanthropy in Garfield, Pitkin, and Western Eagle Counties. Access AfterSchool (Access) provides affordable afterschool and summer enrichment programs to youth aged 6–14 from Basalt to Rifle. Students learn new skills, become confident, and develop new pathways to learning, self-discovery and achievement. Programs aim to provide opportunities for all students to: • Develop the life skills they need to succeed now and in the future, • Be socially/emotionally healthy and confidently contributing to their community, • Have opportunities to build positive relationships with adult mentors and peers, and, • Be ready for college and career success. Access works with students during a critical time of day, at a significant point in their lives. Research suggests during this time, juvenile violent crime rates triple, and youth are most likely to be in or cause a car crash, and engage in substance abuse and high-risk sexual behavior. Preventative initiatives, like Access’ programs offer youth the opportunity to engage in healthy, active and enriching programs that keep them safe, connected to their peers and to their community. Over the past 9 years Access has served 14,876 students, hired 1,673 instructors and provided 1,694 classes. Alpine Legal Services was founded to address the legal needs of low-income, victims, seniors and atrisk youth who could not afford attorney representation to protect their basic needs; adequate food, housing, unlawful debt collection, freedom from domestic violence, protection of senior and at-risk youth rights. For more than ten years, Alpine Legal Services has offered an invaluable service to our community. In 2004, Roaring Fork Legal Services merged with Garfield Legal Services to form Alpine Legal Services, Inc. Alpine has offices in Aspen, Glenwood Springs, and intake hours in Rifle. We serve Garfield, Pitkin and Western Eagle counties. The merger increased our ability to provide legal assistance by combining the strengths of both organizations. In the past, Garfield Legal Services focused on education, clinics, referrals, providing legal information and assistance with court forms. Roaring Fork Legal Services concentrated on giving advice and providing in court representation. The merger allowed us to utilize the expertise of each organization and expand our services to our client community. Alpine Legal Services is a small innovative organization that is meeting the challenges of providing legal services to an increasing amount of eligible clients. The Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program (AZYEP) believes youth have an important voice and the community deserves a chance to listen. We partner with KDNK Carbondale Community Access Radio to offer opportunities in community broadcasting through four programs: weekly live music shows, youth news, classroom collaborations and peer mentoring. AZYEP provides an inclusive, safe space for students ages 8 to 18 to discover their voice. AZYEP participants not only use their voice and have fun on the radio, they build upon skills that transfer into life. Students report that being on the radio helps them become more comfortable speaking both in public and with their peers; they feel more confident expressing their opinions and asking questions. Students also believe that youth radio supports them in understanding the perspectives of other people, assists them to reach their goals and helps them stay calm and problem solve. Students feel more connected to the larger community by being on the radio. In turn, AZYEP provides listeners insight into youth culture. Aspen Historical Society (AHS) actively preserves and passionately presents local history in an inspired and provocative manner that will continue to anchor our community and its evolving character. AHS maintains one of the largest public archives in the region, with a portion of the collection available online as a free resource as well as over 20,000 images available for purchase. AHS operates four historic sites, your museums and ghost towns: the Wheeler/Stallard Museum, the Holden/Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum, and the ghost towns of Independence and Ashcroft. From interpretive storytelling to museum theater, AHS utilizes industry-leading strategies to provide creative and fun ways for participants of all ages to learn about area history. Locals and visitors of all ages are invited to explore the history of the Aspen/Snowmass area with guided tours, programs, and community events offered year-round. Tours (on foot, by jeep and electric vehicle) include everything from historic pubs and Aspen’s Victorian West End neighborhood to the Hotel Jerome, Wheeler Opera House, Red Butte Cemetery, ski resorts, and more. The all-Volunteer Aspen Thrift Shop makes grants totaling over $600,000 annually in the areas of the Arts, Community, Education, Environment and Youth Activities. In addition, we provide college scholarships to high school graduates who represent the Thrift Shop spirit. Aspen Thrift Shop was started in 1949, to help the old “citizens hospital” which was in a Victorian home at the base of Red Mountain. The attic was remodeled to provide housing for 2 or 3 nurses. When the hospital hired several more nurses, the Aspen Thrift Shop helped pay their salaries. Next, the Aspen Thrift Shop helped the Red Brick School which now houses the Red Brick Center for the Arts. Initially we were instrumental in starting the first kindergarten and the first hot lunch program for the school. For many years we supported only the hospital and the school but eventually we began to support the Aspen Ski Club and other non-profits. Gurley-Tomashosky YEAR ESTABLISHED 2011 MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to provide well-trained, court-appointed volunteer advocates to abused and neglected children in Colorado’s 9th Judicial District. The program’s vision is to support a safe, permanent, nurturing home for every child it serves.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) represent, among many things, stability. CASA volunteers fill a unique and unmet need for individualized attention for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. They are often the only consistency in cases that can last upwards of two years and sometimes longer. CASA volunteers are regular members of our community who receive in-depth, specialized training and are then appointed by a judge as an Officer of the Court. They focus on one youth or sibling group at a time and as a result, they bring a great depth of understanding and empathy to each case by getting to know the child and making recommendations to the court based on the best interests of the child. As a small non-profit, CASA of the Ninth relies on the support of caring people in our community as we give a voice to children who have been abused, neglected, or witnessed domestic violence in Pitkin, Garfield, and Rio Blanco counties. Colorado Animal Rescue thrives on the support of our volunteers and donors. Over 60% of our annual operating budget comes in the form of in-kind donations and we invite over 175 volunteers to help us with our work each year. English In Action was founded 25 years ago in response to a substantially increased immigrant population in our service area, western Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley. Many of our immigrant community members feel isolated and vulnerable due to their lack of English communication skills. Our mission is to strengthen the quality of life for everyone in our community by helping adults learn to read, write and speak English and by building cross-cultural relationships. We do this through one-on-one and small group tutoring, weekly drop-in classes and specialized workshops designed to help students overcome obstacles to learning English. Our volunteer tutors are the lifeblood of our programs, who often cite wanting to “make a new friend” and “give back” as primary motivations for their involvement. As a result of our programs, our adult students more effectively manage their daily lives and become more engaged members of our community. While learning English is the foundation of our tutoring program, we are proud to report that our students and volunteer tutors often develop deep and enduring friendships. Breaking down cultural barriers is no small feat, but the benefits of nurturing a more integrated, harmonious community - one in which everyone has a voice - are immeasurable. www.coloradogives.org/EnglishinAction

Raising A Reader provides over 1400+ children under the age of six with a weekly book bag and four age-appropriate books. Books are kept for a week, returned and then replaced with another four books.
MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to foster early literacy bonds between children and their parents to ensure that all young children from Aspen to Parachute develop a love of books and the skills to become successful readers.
Children participate through our partnership with 55 preschool classrooms and 25 kindergarten classrooms from Aspen to Parachute. For low-income families whose children do not attend preschool, our five weekly neighborhood outreach sessions (called Bolsitas Rojas) engage parents and children at libraries, schools, churches or other community centers. To ensure full and effective use of these weekly book bags, Raising A Reader facilitates over 50 group parent sessions each year to help families cultivate strong read-aloud and literacy development practices in their homes. Last year cumulative attendance at parent sessions exceeded 800. In the spring, Raising A Reader Aspen to Parachute provides each group of children with an end-of-theyear field trip to their local library. The Sun reaches out beyond tourism and business to families, professionals, ranchers, laborers, educators and others who make this place their full-time or part-time home. A nonprofit, we are a trusted source of local news both in English and Spanish. In 2021 we introduced our new journalism program for area High School Students. Through this program students are mentored and learn the art and business of journalism. They also have their work published in The Sopris Sun and el Sol del Valle. We also launched el Sol del Valle, our Spanish language insert. Working in collaboration with various groups across the area, our Spanish insert has content created by native Spanish speakers. Often you can read the same article in English, which makes it a handy tool to practice the other language.
