WELCOME Director’s Note This year’s theme is SUPER.NATURAL, celebrating the forces that are greater than us, yet can provide guidance: forces such as astrology, the occult, tarot and dreams. The last 10 years of GITNB have been pretty super natural as well. The people that show up and integrate into this process enrich our lives, and walk away enriched. The audiences give love that helps fuel the volunteer models, many of whom are stretching far outside of their comfort zone. The money that has been raised has birthed Rosybelle, our mobile maker bus and provided creative opportunity for so many youth in our valley. Ten years go by quickly when you are having fun and fun has been my experience with this show. Other words that come to mind are: creative, artistic, friendship, confidence, transformation and team work. This is not a solo experience. Thank you for making the SUPER. NATURAL so natural!
What is happening at Carbondale Arts? Our mission is Building Community Through Art and we take this seriously. Carbondale Arts (CA) has been an intrinsic part of the Carbondale community for over 44 years and we are deeply involved in issues such as affordable housing, economic development and education in our schools. Known for events like the Carbondale Mountain Fair and this show, we find ways to bring people together to keep our community thriving. Our home is The Launchpad, located in the core of the Carbondale Creative District. We share our space with Dance Initiative, The R2 Gallery, The Artique and the Betty Jane Schuss Memorial community gardens. 10 Years of Love + Creativity Green Is the New Black Fashion Extravaganza was started in 2004 by Amy Kimberly. It brought together a combination of fashion and talent with a theme of “The Fashion of Politics”. After all, it was an election year. The show continued in that vein for another year, always near Halloween, which inspired the audiences to dress up as well. The show took a break for a few years, trying to find a home and a tribe of folks to take it to the next level. That tribe appeared in 2008 and Kimberly jumped on the chance to add a sustainable fashion element to a Summer of Music concert. Shortly thereafter, the Carbondale Rec. Center opened and the rest is history. “The show that we know today really started when the Rec. Center was built,” explained Kimberly. Having the bigger venue allowed the Roaring Fork creative community to think big. It provided a larger runway and stage, a projection screen, lights and more audience. The idea behind the show
was to promote sustainability in the environment and connection to the earth through a creative process that involved design and artistry. Today it has evolved into an experience that involves dance, projection mapping and a team of creatives that utilize their talents to design a professional show of New York caliber. “In the beginning I did everything,” explained Kimberly, “from setting choreography, to finding models, to downloading images off the internet with help from Basalt High School students and projecting them as a backdrops. I even held my hand over the projector when I didn’t want the image to show. It was fairly primitive.” It did work and audiences loved it. The show took a turn in 2011 when Deborah Colley walked into the Carbondale Arts office. While the show had had some dance, Colley utilized movement to further the theme and create a connecting thread. Working with a core group of
dancers, Colley added a dimension that had been missing. Today, she is the Operations Manager of Carbondale Arts and helped start Dance Initiative, a local nonprofit dedicated to dance. In 2012, designer Laura Stover began as a model in the show, but quickly took over the reigns as overall stylist and visual artist. No longer did Kimberly need to work with old fashioned projectors and
images. The new team reached out to Alchemy Audio Visual who expanded the opportunities for expression. Stover remains a strong force in the Carbondale Arts matrix as the Design and Marketing Director. Over the 10 years, the show has worked with 600+ volunteer models, 250 designers, numerous artists, approximately 60 dancers and raised over $100,000 for arts education for youth.

Big Project Update: The Rio Grande ARTway This spring, folks traveling along the Rio Grande Trail in Carbondale will notice two new parks in the works, as well as added creativity throughout the one mile stretch of the trail from Snowmass Drive to Hwy. 133. This is the Rio Grande ARTway, a creative placemaking project spearheaded by Carbondale Arts. The first park ready to go is DeRail Park, sponsored by the Carbondale Rotary Clubs. DeRail will have a focus on the railroad history, as well as a shelter and a table built by local master woodworker, Marty Schlein. Another park in the works is the Latino Folk Art Garden. It will host a story sculpture, hammocks and a mosaic table, as well as a pepper garden. This park has been helped by grants from Live Well Garfield County and the Colorado Health Foundation. Soon to come will be an arch created by a team of metal workers in the valley and designed by Olivia Pevec, as well as the Youth Art Park. This project is a great place to get involved in community.
