WELCOME TO THE SHOW!

Brad Brock Director, School of Theatre Florida State University

Kris Salata Chair, School of Theatre Florida State University

We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20212022 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education. For over 45 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country. After the last 18 months of unprecedented challenges, we hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you! - Brad Brock & Kris Salata

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT The School of Theatre is located on land that is the ancestral and traditional territory of the Apalachee Nation, the Muscogee Nation, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. We pay respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants, to the generations yet unborn, and to all Indigenous people.

THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE Directing this play was a tall task for me. I felt a lot of pressure for the show’s success. That the future of FSU SOT’s new focus on diverse and inclusive practices was riding on it. I even had a hard time writing this director’s note, to be honest about the fears and insecurities I experienced during the process. But I realized, if Spencer can do it, so can I. They say “representation matters”. And I agree. But it is the kind of representation that matters. I was honored when I was asked to direct Moon Man Walk. To have the opportunity to come back to my old stomping grounds and do something that felt impossible when I was here. A black play, by a black author, with a black cast, and a black director. That may sound a bit excessive to some, but remember, the kind of representation matters. In the nearly 50 years of the SOT’s existence, this is the first time a production like this has ever been in the season’s calendar. The students asked to be seen, to feel included, and FSU SOT heard them and responded in kind. And I must applaud them for that. So, realizing the importance of this moment, I was up for the challenge. I had to do right by these students. They put their trust in me. In essence, this is a love letter. A thank you note. We are here. We see you. Do you see us? Do you see you, on “the coast of the cosmos”, on the edge of multitudes? Where anything is possible; as long as you believe it so. It’s filled with nostalgia, heartbreak, and even a bit of cultural biases as Spencer struggles to piece back his shattered past and come to terms with the reality of who he is. But it’s also filled with love, laughter, hope overflowing. With all the love and gratefulness, Tai Thompson

GET MORE! From the Playwright... “There are a few things that I always want audiences to feel when they walk into something I wrote. First, your presence is already awesome. We’re really glad you’re here. And second, you actually cannot fail. There’s nothing you could do in this space that is incorrect. Your experience is correct. If you have an emotional response to something, acknowledge it, embrace it, cry, laugh, whatever it is, but never read it is failure and don’t let other people around you frame it as failure. And if there is a moment in which you have a visceral experience of failure, examine that to ask yourself, ‘What’s actually happening?’” - James Ijames

PATRONS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: BRIANNE JACKSON Brianne Jackson is currently a third-year BA Theatre major at Florida State University. Her recent credits include Playground: A Choose Your Own Adventure Experience and Tragedy: A Tragedy. She is currently the Artistic Director of the Student Theatre Association. One of her favorite School of Theatre memories was when she had the opportunity to shadow Michael Jablonski's direction of We Are Proud to Present.... Having the chance to not only be a part of such a fantastic production, but also to deepen her knowledge of her craft has helped her as an artist and individual. Though the performance never got to leave the rehearsal space due to COVID-19, her favorite production was the devised piece she worked on for New Horizons. “The chance to work with such amazing artists and create a piece from scratch was eye-opening and critical for my development as an artist.” Her long-term goals are to continue to create and perform in films: “I want to create work that inspires others who are growing up and throwing themselves into this intense but amazing career field.” She is grateful to the Patrons Association for helping support her artistic journey!
