WELCOME TO THE SHOW!

Brad Brock Director, School of Theatre Florida State University

Kris Salata Chair, School of Theatre Florida State University

We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20232024 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education. For over 50 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country. We hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you! - Brad Brock & Kris Salata

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The School of Theatre is located on land that is the ancestral and traditional territory of the Apalachee Nation, the Muscogee Nation, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. We pay respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants, to the generations yet unborn, and to all Indigenous people.

THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members with a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE From Director Chari Arespacochaga Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 is a musicalized adaptation of a 70-ish page snippet from Tolstoy’s massive epic novel, War & Peace. In the novel, as in Dave Malloy’s musical, we experience a celebration of humanity in the examination of the ‘war’ and the ‘peace’ of being human. We invite you to journey with us through the stories of Natasha & Anatole & the Bolkonskys & the Rostovs & Dolokhov & Hélène & Balaga & Sonya & all the rest. And what about Pierre? In our story, peace is most closely attained after we see the shows first selfless act — Pierre extending grace to Natasha, in the simplest and kindest of ways. And suddenly a comet that they thought to portend doom became a beacon towards a new life. I am so thankful to have been in the company of much grace throughout this entire process from the day we decided our school would take on this mammoth, genredefying piece of theatre. The first of such grace is that we are doing this show that forces us to think on new ways of doing and making in our space and with each other at a time that so fortuitously aligns with our own collective efforts to look at new ways we ought to be sharing the joys of theatre-making with our students. And then a multitude of daily grace followed through every member of this company — the designers and their teams, the dramaturg, the stage management team, the choreographer, the music director, the musicians, the assistant director, the dance captain, the shop heads, the marketing team, the front of house team, the production management and school leadership and, of course the brilliant, brave and glorious cast. I cannot begin to even say how thankful I am for each and every one of them. They are, each of them, the great comet. Together we are thankful for all of you joining us at this club. We have worked hard to create the most unique theatrical experience possible in the hopes that each one of you takes away your own personal encounter with the show. And may that encounter blossom into a glorious comet for each of you. To T and our M & S — my greatest comets. Raz, dva, tri!

DRAMATURG’S NOTE From Dramaturg Aaron C. Thomas Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 is based on Leo Tolstoy’s famous and wonderful novel War & Peace, but Dave Malloy, the musical’s composer and librettist, has taken just a sliver of this epic to explore onstage. Out of the novel’s 1,215 pages, Malloy chooses only 65 pages or so to adapt. War & Peace is set during the Napoleonic Wars of 1803–1815, and the novel goes back and forth between brutal descriptions of the violence and human cost of these wars and the more philosophical and social concerns of the characters living “at peace” in Moscow, Petersburg, and in the Russian countryside. A key aspect of the world of Great Comet is that the war is going on “somewhere out there,” but that it doesn’t really touch the socialites in Moscow who are visiting the opera, falling in love, and hoping to solve their families’ financial problems by securing wealthy fiancé(e)s. This section of the novel is, in many ways, a portrait of rich Muscovites who are concerned with drinking and parlor games and seduction, but underneath all of this runs the other current of War & Peace: a set of philosophical concerns and existential questions. In his first song, Pierre tells us that it’s dawned on him suddenly that he can’t go on living life the way he has been living it. He wonders what he should do with his life, and this very serious question—one many of us ask ourselves—runs as a throughline through Great Comet. Later in the show, Pierre asks, “How did I live? Was I kind enough and good enough? Did I love enough?” And these are Natasha’s questions too: she constantly asks herself why she makes the choices she does; she wonders whether her feelings are real; and she tries to make sense of what she owes to others and to herself. These philosophical questions are illustrated cosmically in our musical. Look out especially for Natasha’s relationship to the moon in act one and Pierre’s relationship to the comet in act two. Although most characters in Great Comet are thinking about trivial things, these two songs mark Natasha and Pierre as they consider deeper connections between our lives and the universe as a whole.

PATRONS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: Jordan Walker, a junior BA Theatre major, has an on-going passion for the performing arts. Born and raised in Fort Myers, FL, Jordan is thankful for how the arts have provided her an outlet since she was young. Jordan has been working very hard to have a flourishing career in acting and the entertainment industry. Her FSU credits include Bulrusher, where she not only was a member of the Ensemble, but had the responsibility of learning the understudy track for the role of Vera. She was also a part of the production crew for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, where she got a behind-thescene glance at what goes into making theatre possible. “I just want to give a warm and gracious thank you for not just the Patrons’ generosity in scholarship contributions, but for their support of the arts. Majoring in Theatre has broadened where I see myself as a performer and how I can achieve my goals. Patrons who support the School of Theatre truly make it possible for students like myself to succeed as students of drama. I could not be more grateful for their support and generosity.”
