Florida State University
Kris Salata Chair, School of Theatre
Florida State University
We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20242025 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education.
For over 50 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country.
We hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you!
- Brad Brock & Kris Salata
The School of Theatre is located on land that is the ancestral and traditional territory of the Apalachee Nation, the Muscogee Nation, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. We pay respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants, to the generations yet unborn, and to all Indigenous people.
As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members with a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity.
Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida.
Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation.
The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

Music Theatre International (MTI) is one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting theatres from around the world the rights to perform the greatest selection of musicals from Broadway and beyond. Founded in 1952 by composer Frank Loesser and orchestrator Don Walker, MTI is a driving force in advancing musical theatre as a vibrant and engaging art form. MTI works directly with the composers, lyricists and book writers of these musicals to provide official scripts, musical materials and dynamic theatrical resources to over 100,000 professional, community and school theatres in the US and in over 150 countries worldwide. MTI is particularly dedicated to educational theatre, and has created special collections to meet the needs of various types of performers and audiences. MTI’s Broadway Junior® shows are 30- and 60-minute musicals for performance by elementary and middle school-aged performers, while MTI’s School Editions are musicals annotated for performance by high school students.
Welcome to The Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein! It is with immense excitement (and a dash of mad scientist glee) that I welcome you to this electrifying production. Tonight, we invite you to journey with us to Transylvania Heights, where laughter meets lunacy, and hilarity comes alive!
This show is a love letter to Mel Brooks’ brilliant comedic genius. It’s a celebration of the absurd, the outrageous, and the utterly delightful. In creating this production, our team has embraced the spirit of Mel’s world—where anything can happen, and the only rule is to have fun.
At its core, Young Frankenstein is about finding family in the unlikeliest of places, accepting our quirks, and learning that being “normal” is vastly overrated. Through the chaos of larger-than-life characters, zany twists, and toe-tapping musical numbers, we hope you’ll laugh until your cheeks hurt and leave humming a tune or two.
This production has been a labor of love, brought to life by an extraordinary cast, a dedicated crew, and a tireless creative team. They’ve poured their hearts (and quite possibly some spare body parts) into crafting this monstrous masterpiece.
So sit back, relax, and prepare to be shocked—in the best way possible! Whether you’re here for the laughs, the music, or the monster himself, we’re thrilled to have you join us on this madcap adventure.
Now, let’s bring this creature to life! It’s time for the show to begin. Enjoy!

Preview @ FSU: Amelia and Me
by Stacey Luftig & Phillip Palmer
Augusta Conradi Studio Theatre
April 4 - April 5
It’s 1935, and pioneering pilot Amelia Earhart makes possibilities feel endless. Jackie Cochran, a brash, beautiful, new flyer looking to soar beyond her tragic past, seeks out Amelia’s guidance and becomes her friend. But when Jackie learns that Amelia’s celebrity and sense of obligation have compelled her to take dangerous shortcuts and big risks, including a treacherous round-the-globe flight, Jackie races against time to intervene—becoming entangled in the tragedy she was trying to prevent. AMELIA AND ME is the untold story of the surprising events preceding Amelia Earhart’s disappearance, and of the friendship between the world’s most beloved pilot and its most accomplished one.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) begins with the following epigraph:
Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay / To mould me man? Did I solicit thee / From darkness to promote me?
These lines reference a confrontation between Adam and God in Paradise Lost, John Milton’s 17th century epic poem. The text retells the expulsion of Satan from Heaven, and the transgression of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Readers are encouraged to draw parallels between Milton’s Adam and Shelley’s Monster, who conceive of themselves as a tragic figures, shunned by their creators, though they strive to be good. Milton’s words serve as the beating heart of Shelley’s timeless tale of creator and creation.
First published when Mary Shelley was just 21, Frankenstein embodied the literary tradition of Romanticism, which centered on an exploration of the emotional, individual, and imaginative. The story has inspired over 130 film adaptations, with Young Frankenstein (1974) being heralded as perhaps the most notable 20th century iteration of the source material. Written as an adaptation of the film of the same name, Mel Brooks’ musical is singular for its tongue-in-cheek jokes and vibrant physical energy. At its core, the musical is first and foremost a comedy, but it manages to maintain allegiance to many of the themes of its Romantic source material. Between the musical, which first opened on Broadway on November 8, 2007, and the 1818 text, there exists a unity both of vision and raison d’être. Both versions aim to explore humans emotional tie to nature and attraction to the sublime, the term the Romantics used for the powerful and awe-inspiring aspects of nature, as opposed to the merely beautiful.
As you watch and enjoy our production, I invite you to consider John Milton’s quotation in conjunction with one from Mel Brooks, Young Frankenstein’s author, “Laughter is a protest scream against death, against the long goodbye. It’s a defense against unhappiness and depression.” Laughter has the power to banish even the most fervent emotions of melancholy from the brain, if temporarily. Similarly, theatre exists not just as a vessel for understanding and empathy, but also as a reprieve from the oppressions of daily life. We sincerely hope that the time you spend with our show can provide a short repose, a break from the day, and as many laughs as you are willing to lend us.

A passionate theatre artist with a strong foundation in dance and violin, Sylvia Preston has been captivated by the stage since childhood. Growing up in Wauchula and Spring Hill, Florida, she actively participated in theatre productions from a young age. Her dedication to the craft led her to pursue a BA Theatre degree at Florida State University.
Sylvia is driven by the power of theatre to evoke unique experiences and provoke audience responses. Her notable performances include Donna in Mamma Mia and Dr. Gibbs in Our Town.
She has also contributed to one-act plays at the Love is Love Festival through White Mouse Productions, valuing the opportunity to be part of a production that aims to raise awareness. One of Sylvia’s most cherished memories is attending Theatre Night for the first time as a freshman, experiencing the vibrant energy and shared passion for theatre within the FSU community. After graduation, Sylvia aspires to pursue acting in regional and professional theatres, as well as film. She is also interested in exploring stage management as a potential career path.
Sylvia is deeply grateful to the Patrons for their generous support of young theatre artists. Their contributions have significantly impacted her educational journey, enabling her to study abroad in London and broaden her horizons. This experience has further solidified her commitment to theatre and her vision for her future.
