WELCOME TO THE SHOW!

We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20242025 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education.

For over 50 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country.

We hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you!

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The School of Theatre is located on land that is the ancestral and traditional territory of the Apalachee Nation, the Muscogee Nation, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. We pay respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants, to the generations yet unborn, and to all Indigenous people.

THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE

As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members with a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity.

Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida.

Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation.

The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“I can’t wait to be an adult” is something we have all said during childhood. Attending college, pursuing a career, getting married, and having kids are goals we strive for from an early age. Being a teenager is a stressful but exciting time in a person’s life because you are so close to reaching the independence of adulthood. Figuring out who you are, testing your beliefs, and experimenting are all a part of growing up. As the girls in The Wolves prepare to impress the university scouts attending the college tournament, adulthood looms closer. #25 says, “We don’t have time, ok, WE DON’T HAVE TIME,” and she’s correct. The girls in The Wolves understand the timer on their girlhood is ticking down, knowing it will hit zero in just a few weeks.

The Wolves is a ticking time bomb, the girls exploding from childhood to adulthood. The countdown begins at the start of the play. The girls quickly navigate their way on the field and in their relationships while training to be the best for the college tournament. The urgency of this time brings themes of unity, teamwork, identity, loss, and triumph to the forefront, and when the girls finally play in the college tournament, the timer has reached zero. Once the countdown is complete, adulthood bursts forward, and new opportunities begin to open before them. Although not everyone survives the blast, the girls overcome their childish behaviors, and a bright future awaits them. “WE ARE THE WOLVES” ends the play, and this chant transforms the team from girls to women. It is primal, it is freeing, it is a cry that says, “look out world, here we come!”

The Wolves is a powerful story about young women growing up in a complex but exciting world that we all can relate to. The Soccer Mom’s sentiment, “It’s our gals! You’re not getting any younger, you know?” makes us smile and question, “where did the time go?” This play is a flashback for us, reliving our deep conversations about the world while being safely supported by our friends. We fondly think of the challenges we have overcome in our teenage years and appreciate the people who helped us get to where we are now.

GO WOLVES!

PATRONS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT:

Tanner Griffin is a passionate and versatile theatre artist currently pursuing his second year at Florida State University. With a background in homeschooling and dual enrollment at a local community college, Tanner brings a unique perspective and a strong work ethic to his studies.

Tanner’s creative pursuits extend beyond the classroom. He has written, co-written, and produced several original works, including Pyrates, A Play About A Man Who’s Trapped Inside A Box, Strangers and The Portal Traitor: The Musical.

His passion for theatre has led him to actively participate as Stage Manager for White Mouse Productions, director for Side B Society, Dramatic Arts Coordinator for the Salon of Fine Arts, and two full seasons in various roles within the Gainesville Community Playhouse, including sound tech, sound designer, usher, stage manager, and director.

Tanner’s dedication to his craft is evident in his ability to seamlessly transition between different artistic roles. His love for people and storytelling shines through in his work, and his passion for music serves as a powerful medium for expressing emotions. His favorite theatre memory is when the audience cried during the run of A Play About A Man Who’s Trapped Inside A Box.

As a Patrons Scholar, Tanner is immensely grateful for the support and opportunities provided by the program. He recognizes that this scholarship is not only a financial aid but also a valuable investment in his future as an artist. Tanner is committed to making the most of this opportunity and using his talents to create meaningful and impactful work.
