WELCOME TO THE SHOW!

We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20242025 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education.

For over 50 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country.

We hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

The Sins of Sor Juana is a powerful and unconventional play that brings to life the story of one of the most inspiring figures in literary history: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. A poet, a scholar, and a trailblazer, Juana defied societal expectations in 17th-century Mexico, challenging the constraints placed on women and daring to live a life guided by intellect, passion, and faith. Her legacy has echoed through the centuries, empowering generations of women to pursue their calling despite the forces that seek to silence them.

Set against the backdrop of Colonial Mexico, a time and place not often explored on Western stages, this play immerses us in a world shaped by the intersecting influences of Catholic Spain and Indigenous Aztec traditions. Juana, born out of wedlock to a Spanish father and a Mexican mother, faced immense social limitations, yet refused to shrink herself to fit the expectations imposed upon her. Her story is not just historical, it is deeply relevant today.

This production features a full Hispanic cast, bringing authenticity and cultural depth to the story. We emphasize the contemporary relevance of Juana’s journey and theatricality of Juana’s world by weaving together elements of dance, song, Indigenous movement, and sword fighting, all brought to life by our immensely talented cast.

Though centuries have passed, systems of oppression persist, and the fight for women’s autonomy and recognition continues. However, figures like Juana transcend time.We hope to honor Hispanic heritage while making Juana’s extraordinary journey accessible and moving for all audiences. The Hispanic community has played an integral role in shaping American culture, not only through art and literature but also through traditions, language, and even the food we all enjoy. It is my hope that this play serves as a bridge, deepening our appreciation of this rich cultural tapestry.

I am grateful to Florida State University for entrusting me with this production, and I look forward to sharing this deeply moving story with you. May Juana’s voice continue to inspire, challenge, and remind us all of the power of intellect, resilience, and the unyielding pursuit of truth.

- Monika Gossmann

DRAMATURG’S NOTE

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is one of the most significant poets and playwrights in Latin America, as well as the first woman published in the Americas. She was a poet, theologian, and faithful Catholic , and her plays The Divine Narcissus and The Trials of a Noble House have become classics in theatre history. Sor Juana stands as a national icon of México, being commemorated on the 200-peso bill.

She wrote plays and had them performed nearly a century before the first play by an American writer was staged in North America . Her defense of the rights of women to education found no equal for at least a century and a half and she has long stood as a beacon for proto-feminism and women’s rights to education.

In The Sins of Sor Juana , we see a young Juana navigate how her God-given call to wisdom and learning is threatened by the forces of colonial Spain, imperial Catholicism, and the patriarchy of the viceroyal court. In the 17th century, the convent was the one place women could escape to where they could live decently alone, devote themselves to learning, and retain independence within the structure of the Church. This is where Juana thrived.

Juana believed the greatest argument for her intellectual activities was that God had given her the gift of an insatiable desire for knowledge. She viewed this as her drive and call, serving as both a joy and a curse–a thorn in her flesh. It was more than a personal call for her; Juana believed that God desired all human minds to understand all of creation as His book. She understood her intellect and drive to learn as gifts from God, and she believed the Creator wanted the minds of women to engage in learning.

Throughout this play, I encourage you to see how this call is threatened by various parties, and how Juana ultimately decides to deal with these challenges to her purpose. See how the antagonism and envy of those in power serve to both silence and undo her influence on society. See how her legacy lives and breathes through the universal drive to know more and to free oneself from ignorance.
