Welcome to Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: e Rock Experience! It’s a joy to share this vibrant adaptation of Mo Willems’ beloved book with you. As we embarked on this creative journey, we kept at the forefront the idea that while this story may appear to be about “coming out,” it’s truly about “letting in.” is theme resonated deeply throughout our rehearsal process, guiding us as we explored the importance of community, acceptance, and imagination.
eatre for Young Audiences is a unique space where we can meet young minds in their openness and readiness to embrace any possibility. Our main character, Wilbur, embodies this spirit—he’s a beacon of hope, an adventurer in the world of whimsy. As he encounters his fellow mole rats, who are hesitant to entertain the idea of change, Wilbur’s journey unfolds through a simple yet profound question: “Why not?” is question serves as the heartbeat of our production, reminding us all that theatre is a place to explore, to wonder, and to dream.
Our production invites audiences—both young and young at heart—to join in this exploration of identity and belonging... and music! In addition to stunning visuals, we celebrate the diverse musical tapestry woven by Deborah Wicks La Puma. e Naked Mole Rat colony starts as classic rockers, but as Wilbur embarks on his self-discovery, we witness the emergence of other genres within their tunnels.
As you experience this rock-infused adventure, I hope you are inspired to ask your own questions, to embrace the unexpected, and to celebrate the uniqueness of every individual.
With gratitude,
Julie Woods-Robinson Director
Mo Willems has achieved enduring success as a children’s author through his ability to embody a truly childlike spirit. In his words, he wants his books to be “played not just read.” is is evidenced through his interactive writing style in books such as Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and the Elephant & Piggie series, as well as Willems’ ability to authentically connect with the perspectives of his young readers. Unlike many current examples of art and media for children, Willems’ works do not present an adult’s distorted perspective of what children are interested in; the World of Mo is playful and whimsical without any hint of pandering.
Not only has this provided countless children across the world with early exposure to enrichment through art, but these e orts have also allowed Willems’ works to emerge as timeless pieces that can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages. e quiet wisdom and charming playfulness of his stories can speak to the inner child within all of us, just as much as they can speak to an actual child. And, oftentimes, it is the grown-ups who may need Willems’ insights the most.
Willems explains that through all his works, “[He is] trying to engender empathy … All of the problems that we have in the world are ultimately problems of no empathy, people just living in their own shoes and refusing to try on others.” In Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: e Rock Experience!, Wilbur is our main character, but he is not the one who faces this lesson. roughout the story, his heart remains pure, and he never denies his desire to get dressed. It is the rest of the mole rat colony who must learn acceptance, inclusivity, and empathy.
is universally applicable message, paired with Willems’ all-ages appeal, creates a show that may surprise some grown-up audience members with its moments of wisdom and sincerity. Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: e Rock Experience is a heartwarming introduction into Mo Willems’ world of sophisticated whimsywhere kids of all ages are invited to rock out, in any way they feel comfortable. If it’s fun, get to it!

A multifaceted artist specializing in acting, singing, and dancing, Brenna Reed Maloney has been pursuing her creative passions since childhood. As a BA eatre Major at Florida State University, she has actively participated in various theatre and lm productions, including 9 to 5 e Musical (Booth Singer), Curtains (Bambi), Girl House, Juna (Dancer for this lm), and e Middle of Time (BFA Film).
Her favorite FSU School of eatre memory was her rst eatre night, which made her feel so special to be in a space
where like-minded individuals could collectively celebrate the performances of other students. Her favorite production she worked on was FSU’s student written production Girl House. She was honored to be a part of a dedicated cast, in which she got to play a complex character in a show with incredibly heightened stakes.
Beyond theatre, Brenna’s artistic endeavors extend to lm, graphic arts, and writing. Her goal is to pursue a balanced career in both lm and live theatre in either NYC or Atlanta, involving herself in acting, dancing, singing, lming, and writing endeavors.
As a student who struggles nancially, Brenna is grateful for the opportunity to have received the scholarship, which has provided her with the motivation and support to continue her artistic journey. She recognizes the signi cant impact of the Patrons Association generosity on her education and future aspirations.
