Kris Salata Chair, School of Theatre Florida State University

We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20232024 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education. For over 50 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country. We hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you! - Brad Brock & Kris Salata

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT The School of Theatre is located on land that is the ancestral and traditional territory of the Apalachee Nation, the Muscogee Nation, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation.

The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

NOTES From Director Aaron C.Thomas We know so much about the men who performed Shakespeare’s plays as actors in the King’s Men. And we have many of their names – Richard Burbage, Ned Alleyn, Robert Armin, William Kempe, John Heminges. Comparatively, we know very little about the bears, bulls, dogs, and primates who performed against their will in the arenas next door to the theatres south of the Thames. We have some of their names, but even those, as one of our stage managers pointed out in an early rehearsal, are not their actual names at all but names given to them by their captors. Our playwright, Aditi Brennan Kapil, has attempted to see the world through the eyes of these bears. Imogen Says Nothing considers how the bears next door to the Globe might have impacted the theatrical world of Shakespeare’s England. More than the famous stage direction “Exit, pursued by a bear” from The Winter’s Tale, this play also considers a missing character from Much Ado About Nothing—Leonato’s wife—who appears in both published scripts but never says a word. Who might this woman have been? Where might she have gone? And what might she have said if there were someone to listen? It’s easy to see the bears in Imogen Says Nothing as a metaphor. They are imprisoned, chained, and violated; no one bothers to learn their language; they are feared and treated as if they are inferior beings. Indeed, the men in the play treat Imogen very similarly to the way they treat the bears, even when they understand her to be a woman. Imogen Says Nothing, in this way, is a feminist, anti-racist, and anti-prison reading of Renaissance England and modern society more broadly. But although we can read the bears as a metaphor for those our society mistreats, I challenge you to remember that they are not merely a metaphor. The bears are also themselves. They were brought to London on ships and in chains. They were made to perform, cut, tethered, and their lives were treated as if they were insignificant. That was a failing on the part of the humans, not a flaw in the bears themselves, and this play is a reminder of the significance and nobility of these powerful beings.

NOTES From Dramaturg Kae Milne Twichell John Heminges and Henry Condell published Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in the First Folio printed in 1623. However, in the 1600 quarto edition printed by William Aspley, a ghost character – the governor’s wife – finds her way into the text. Enter Innogen. Or, in the case of our play, Imogen. Ghost characters are characters which fall through the playwright’s cracks – present in name and body, but absent in dramatic weight or spirit. Absented characters are not the only thing left out of the greater narrative in the world of Imogen Says Nothing and, indeed, our own world. In 1611, the cartographer John Speed could not figure out the correct name for the small village north of South Burcombe in Wiltshire, England. As a temporary placement, he wrote “quare” meaning query. An unknown. A question mark. However, he never found out the correct name for the little town or, if he did, he never corrected his mistake on the draft. The map, The Theatre of the Empyre of Great Britain, was printed with the placeholder name intact and the village is still listed as Quare on that map today. For Imogen and the people of North Burcombe, the erasure is devastating. Throughout time, the history that gets told, the people that we remember, the names we call cities and empires all result from what gets written down. Despite centuries of existence as a sport, we only have one existing record of three names of bears, including Harry Hunks and Ned Whiting, used for baiting in the Paris Garden located by the theatres. What happened to all the other animals? What were their names? Where did they come from? As Imogen says, “It is a fearsome thing to be absent.” And so, this play aims to tell one story of those people left out of the narrative. Theatre is boards and air, words and ink – it is up to us to not leave anything out. As you watch Imogen Says Nothing, I encourage you to consider the other side of old stories you know well and, of course, rethink Shakespeare. Why wouldn’t a mother speak up if she is present in Much Ado About Nothing? How much do bears, actors, and theatre really have in common? And in a world of our own composition, who gets to hold the pen? FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MUSIC

PATRONS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT:

Shelby Jean Simmons, born and raised in Webster, FL, first discovered her passion of theatre when she portrayed Mary Warren in her high school drama club’s production of The Crucible. Prior to attending FSU, she attended Lake-Sumter State College and became president of the Society for the Performing Arts. At the same time, she began working as a theatre professional in Orlando and greater Central Florida.

She has performed at Lake-Sumter State College, The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, and on The Florida Train. A senior at FSU, she has spent the past two years as one of the Ringmasters and Act Captains of the FSU Flying High Circus. After graduating, she hopes to eventually bring theatre back home to Webster to allow her rural community greater access to the arts. “Thank you to the Patrons, for making this possible. Your support is allowing me to finish up my ‘extra’ semester with a little less stress. It’s also a reminder that there are people out there who believe in the future of the arts, and want to make it possible for me and the people I’ve met here at FSU to make that future a little bit brighter.”
