THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.
November 18-21 The Fallon Theatre Based on the book by Matt de la Peña and Chrisitan Robinson, West’s adaptation pulls the hoppin’ music of Lamon Dozier and Paris Dozier into a moving musical.

WHO’S WHO Lauren Abel (Dramaturg) is secondyear MA Theatre Studies student from Fort Walton Beach, FL. This is her first production with the FSU School of Theatre. Thank you to Aaron C. Thomas for his mentorship and Michael Fatica for the warm welcome onto the team! Ruth A. Brandvik (Scenic Designer) is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Valdosta State University. She earned a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre with an emphasis in Scenic Design from FSU and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design/Technical Theatre from Eastern New Mexico University. Professional credits include Mamma Mia!, Ring of Fire, Always, Patsy Cline, and Les Miserables at Peach State Summer Theatre; The Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavi, Almost, Maine, Hedda Gabler, and In the Heights at FSU; and projections programmer for Elf The Musical and Murder on the Orient Express at Ogunquit Playhouse. www. brandvikdesigns.com Danny Becker (Costume Designer) is a second-year MFA candidate in the Costume Design program. This is their first realized production, and they would like to thank Colleen, Sarah, and Michael for their continued patience with such a big show. Go Team! Emily Chancellor (Technical Director) is a third-year graduate student studying Technical Production from Denver, CO. She previously worked on Marie Antionette, Medora Musical, Still Life with Iris, and Sweet Charity as the Assistant Technical Director. She thanks her Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Aunt for their constant love and support. Zach Cramer (Sound Designer) is the Sound Designer for The School of Theatre at FSU. Over the past twenty-five years, he has designed over 100 productions including The Who’s Tommy, Peter Pan, Ragtime, Seussical The Musical, Nine (winner
2008 FTC, 2009 SETC and advanced to national AACT), Titanic, The Producers, Spamalot, Hedda Gabler, Addams Family, Beauty and the Beast, Hairspray, and In The Heights. Michael Fatica (Director, Choreographer) is a proud FSU graduate and is thrilled to be back in the Fallon Theatre. He has been seen on Broadway in Newsies, Frozen, The Cher Show, Groundhog Day, A Bronx Tale, Matilda, and the 2016 revival of She Loves Me. He is a resident director and choreographer for Norwegian Cruise Lines, has served as the Associate Choreographer for the International Tour of Matilda and for The Radio City New York Spring Spectacular starring Derek Hough. Most recently, his choreography can be seen in the NYC interactive experience Speakeasy. On screen, Michael danced in the awardwinning documentary Dick Johnson is Dead on Netflix, on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and more. Huge thanks to the School of Theatre for asking him to return. Jack Feldman (Lyrics) has written music and lyrics for theater, film, television, and pop records. His vast number of works include: Broadway and Off-Broadway: The Madwoman of Central Park West; Isn’t It Romantic by Wendy Wasserstein; Beyond Therapy by Christopher Durang; Coming Attractions by Ted Tally; Miami (book by Ms. Wasserstein). Harvey Fierstein (Book) is a four-time Tony Award-winning writer and actor. His Broadway writing credits include Kinky Boots, Torch Song Trilogy (Tony, Drama Desk, Dramatists Guild Awards), Casa Valentina, Safe Sex, Legs Diamond, and A Catered Affair (12 Drama Desk nominations and the Drama League Award for Best Musical). His La Cage Aux Folles is the only show to ever win Best Musical and 2 Best Revival Tony Awards. Other plays include Spookhouse, Forget Him, and Flatbush Tosca. His teleplays include Tidy Endings for HBO (ACE Award) and On Common Ground for Showtime. His children's HBO special, The Sissy Duckling, won the Humanitas Prize and the book version is in its eighth printing. Other honors include the Drama League Award for Outstanding Performer of the Year, a special OBIE award, NY Magazine Award, and nominations for The Olivier Award and an Emmy. His political writings have been seen on PBS' series “In The Life” and published in The NY Times, Huffington Post, and Hartford Courant. He was inducted into The Theater Hall of Fame in 2008. Debra Hale (Dialect Coach) is an Associate Professor in the BFA Acting Program and a Designated Master Linklater Voice Teacher. She teaches voice production/ acting, dialects, and yoga and has coached many productions at FSU. She is a member of Actors Equity and Screen Actors Guild. Professional vocal coaching credits include: Shakespeare and Company, Indiana Repertory, San Diego Repertory, Irish Classical Theatre (NY), and several seasons for La Jolla Playhouse. She has led workshops in Hawaii, Thailand, England, Scotland, Wales, Hungary, and France. Lately, she has created voice practices for
the Linklater Voice Centre in Orkney, Scotland for an international audience. Sarah Hinzman (Assistant Director) is a first year MFA Directing candidate from Cedar Rapids, IA. Previous credits include Constellations and All Shook Up (Associate Director) at Clinton Area Showboat Theatre; Black Box: An Adoption Story (Director) and Shakespeare in Love (Associate Director) at Theatre Cedar Rapids; Marjorie Prime (Assistant Director) at Stagewest Theatre Company; and Shakuntala (Co-Director) at Gateway Dance Theatre. She earned a BFA in Music Theatre from Viterbo University, and an MS in Adult Learning & Organizational Performance from Drake University. Ralph JeanPaul (Music Director, Conductor) is a native of Miami, FL where he graduated from Miami Central Senior High School. Her New York City design credits include work at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, Equity Library Theatre and Broadway’s Longacre Theatre. Among the shows she has designed, include King Lear, Tempest, Othello, Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Importance of Being Earnest, Antigone, The Pirates of Penzance, The Physicists, Sweeney Todd, and Man of La Mancha. She has designed costumes for the original productions of David Mamet’s Lakeboat, Larry Shue’s The Nerd, Amlin Gray’s Kingdom Come and Deborah Pryer’s The Love Talker. Some noted actors she has designed for include Morgan Freeman, Harold Gould, Lili Taylor, Joe Morton, CCH Pounder, Michael Rooker, Andrea de Shields, Phyllis Frelich and James Naughton. Costume design renderings for The Love Talker, which was produced for the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville—Humana Festival were included in the USITT Design Exposition 1988. Her work for A Doll’s House, produced at Florida State University, was also cited during the 1998 USITT Design Expo. She is member of United Scenic Artists Local 829, United States Institute of Theatre Technology and the Costume Society of America.
Hanna Smaglis (Stage Manager) is a senior BA Theatre and Spanish double major from Jacksonville, FL. Previous credits include Witch (Stage Manager), In the Heights (Asst. Stage Manager), and Dry Land (Stage Manager). She would like to thank her friends and family for their love and support. Jason Paul Tate (Fight Choreographer) is pleased to be on loan to his alma mater as both a professor and purveyor of onstage intimacy and violence. Originally from Kentucky, he keeps artistic and professional roots in both San Diego and NYC where he has worked at the Metropolitan Opera, the Public’s Shakespeare in the Park, BAM, Ars Nova, Rattlestick and Classic Stage. Regionally, he has choreographed for A.R.T., Tuacahn, Great Lakes Theatre, Idaho Shakespeare, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare, and The Lost Colony. Jason is a proud member of AEA and SDC, a certified instructor of stage combat with the SAFD; and the cofounder of Neutral Chaos, NYC. Todd Wren (Lighting Designer) received his MFA from Carnegie Mellon University and is a vested member of United Scenic Artists, local #829, and active member of USITT, SETC, and SCTA. NOTES From the Director, Michael Fatica Newsies has two impressive ingredients to make a great show: a visual and aural wow factor with a powerful message inside. This story is about young folks taking a stand for what is right. If we can use energetic tunes and athletic dancing to help inspire at least one person in the audience to take a chance on themselves and to enact positive change in the world for themselves and others, we as a company, onstage and off, have done our jobs. From the Dramaturg, Lauren Abel It is summer, 1899. The Industrial Revolution has already swept the nation and we are knee-deep in a Gilded Age of materialism and rapid economic growth. New York City’s population is growing exponentially, making the streets crowded, dirty, and dangerous. High crime rates, potholes in unpaved roads, and smelly horse-drawn carriages provide countless obstacles for young children hawking newspapers during rush hour. Although the newsies are roughing it in the city, they take pride in their work as what David Nasaw called the “last and most vital link in the business chain.” Newsboys and girls from all ethnic backgrounds spend their days playing baseball, kick-the-can, throwing dice, and gossiping, but when the circulation bell rings for the afternoon paper, they mean business. The little laborers of ages ranging from five to seventeen must weigh many factors to determine the number of papers they purchase to break even for the day, including the weather, day of the week, season of the year, number of papers sold the day before, and (most importantly) the sensationalism of the headline. Even if it means feigning illness or lying to customers about how many papers they have left to sell, the newsies work every angle to earn a nickel. The Newsboy Strike of 1899 was just one of many newsboy strikes throughout history that echoed the demands of labor unions created to advocate for skilled and unskilled workers. Labor unions in the 19th century, some of which still exist today, negotiated fair wages, reasonable hours, and safer working conditions. Just as the young underdogs take on Goliath in this musical, the theme of working-class citizens fighting for equality is a recurring American narrative. The original production of Newsies at Paper Mill Playhouse was not necessarily designed to be a Broadway hit. However, the show spoke to audiences across multiple generations, and what was scheduled to be a twelve-week run turned into a box office hit that ran for two and half years and received eight Tony nominations! This wild popularity may have been related to the show's coincidental timing in sync with the Occupy Wall Street movement. In September 2011, protestors lined the streets of New York opposing commercial money in politics, corporate greed, and financial inequality. The countless protests we have witnessed in recent years demonstrate the same unending passion and rigor American citizens express in times of strife. In addition to catchy tunes and impressive choreography, Newsies is also a testament to the act of standing up for what you believe in and joining as a community to demand respect and progress.

PATRONS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: GAGE MORGAN Gage Morgan is a senior BA Theatre major with a focus on acting. His past credits include Lenny (Marisol), Revolutionary (Marie Antoinette), Lane (The Importance of Being Earnest), and more. You can see him on stage next in this production of Newsies as Wiesel. His favorite memory from the School of Theatre is The Importance of Being Earnest theatre night. The community love and support he experienced that night was unlike anything he had ever felt, and reminded him why he loves FSU. After college, Gage hopes to move to LA or New York to pursue his acting career in the film industry. Gage would like to thank the Patrons Association from the bottom of his heart. Without the Patrons Association, he would not be able to pursue his dreams fearlessly.

OUR OFFERINGS & POLICIES
For persons in need of hearing reinforcement, infrared headsets are offered free of charge in the Fallon Theatre. Headsets should be reserved through the Fine Arts Ticket Office. There is no charge for this service; however, a driver’s license, major credit card, or other comparable collateral is required in exchange for the duration of use. Guests who use wheelchairs and similar assistive devices will find accessible parking available in the parking garages adjacent to the Fallon, Lab, and Studio Theatres. Wheelchair seating is available at all of our theatres and should be requested when ordering tickets. Patrons should seek the House Staff for assistance upon arrival.

There are a variety of ticket packages and discounts available. Theatre parties with friends and business associates may be organized at substantial discounts for groups of ten or more. For group sales information, contact the Fine Arts Ticket Office Manager at 850-644-6500. Hours of operation for the Fine Arts Ticket Office are Monday through Thursday, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Friday, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The Ticket Office will open 60 minutes prior to each performance.

Late arrivals will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to performance time to guarantee seating. Guests arriving 15-20 minutes after the start of the performance will not be seated until intermission. Lost and Found articles should be turned in to the House Staff and may be claimed at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, located in the Fine Arts Building.
