I

t’s great to be back after a long summer hiatus for Calgary Living magazine. And we’re making up for lost time with a great fall edition full of informative and entertaining articles and photos on some of your favourite things about living in Calgary. From shopping, dining and entertainment; to community and culture; to local Chinese personalities; to new homes — it’s fun to explore everything that makes our city so special. Headlining this edition is the huge ILLUMINASIA Lantern and Garden Festival being held Thursday through Sunday evenings from September 17 to November 1 at the Calgary Zoo. As evidenced by the photos in this feature, it’s a truly spectacular event that can be enjoyed by every member of the family. Of course an evening of strolling through the zoo can really work up an appetite, which might just call for a nice Dim Sum the following day. There’s lots of places in town to take part in this traditional meal, no matter where you live. We got to a few of them, but not all, so if you’ve got a favourite that we don’t know about we’d love to hear from you (jim.zang@ sourcemediagroup.ca). Still on the topic of things to do, our gal about town, Shelley Boettcher takes on a whirlwind tour of the community of Kensington. It’s hip, it’s happening, but if you want to do it right don’t rush, take a break from your shopping at one of the many coffee shops in the area. Speaking of community, we also dropped by the Calgary Chinese Community Services Association to see what’s up? And the answer is: plenty! There’s programs for adults, programs for kids, places to go for expert advice and basically just learn more about living in Canada. It’s a great place to connect with other people too. In some of our other regular features, we visit Verve, the new condo tower from developer Fram+Slokker. New projects like this one are helping breathe new life into the East Village district, buoyed in large part by people looking for a walk-to-work downtown lifestyle. In addition to this condo focus, we also have an update on the big picture of the Calgary new home market thanks to statistics from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. My friend Trinal Lo wraps things up with her Coles Notes version of everything you always wanted to know about Twitter but were afraid to ask. Well, okay, maybe not quite everything, but hopefully enough of an introduction for you to decide if it’s for you or not. Next time we’ll look at Snapchat, or Pinterest, or Skype or something. Meanwhile, rather than search dozens of websites on a never-ending quest for events to list (which are out of date by the time we publish anyways) we’re just going to list some interesting and important websites you can visit on your own. Again, we may have missed some, so if you’ve got a favourite you think should be on the list feel free to pass it along. Thanks for reading! hinese families in Calgary can celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in a very special way this year at the ILLUMINASIA Lantern & Garden Festival, a new exhibition being presented at the Calgary Zoo by Sinopec Canada. ILLUMINASIA features authentic Chinese lanterns lighting up the zoo, creating a unique Asian experience in Calgary, and developing cultural connections between Calgarians and the city’s growing Asian community. “We are trying to authentically represent and showcase their culture, and bring to light the beautiful artistry of an 800-year-old tradition,” says Roz Freeman, Calgary Zoo advisor, Special Events and Promotions. “We want to help illuminate that to our city, and we’ve taken a Calgary Zoo twist on it.” ILLUMINASIA — the only lantern and garden festival of its kind in western Canada — features more than 180 lanterns that have been designed according to a zoo

animal theme, with animals from around the world in addition to culturally symbolic animals such as the crane, Mandarin duck and phoenix. Lanterns are located throughout the zoo’s Dorothy Harvie Gardens, from the zoo’s north to west end. Designed and produced in China, the one- to three-metre tall bamboo lanterns were assembled on site at the Calgary Zoo by craftsmen from China, with assistance from local tradespeople. ILLUMINASIA is a unique festival, differing from a traditional Chinese lantern festival in that it is much more animal themed, in line with what the Calgary Zoo is all about. “Being a zoo, we wanted to have lanterns that people would be more familiar with, that we can program around, interpret


around and have a little more fun with,” Freeman explains. ILLUMINASIA is aimed at the entire family. Youngsters will enjoy the lantern festival “100 per cent.” And adults will truly appreciate ILLUMINASIA, which Freeman describes as “a more sophisticated version of ZOOLIGHTS. “There’s more of an artistic appreciation,” she explains. “Kids can look at it and think ‘Awesome!’ while adults will have a more refined appreciation for the artistry that goes into the lanterns.” ILLUMINASIA puts the spotlight on three countries: first China, then Japan, and finally India. Each night during the festival, which runs Thursday through Sunday evenings September 17 – November 1, you and your family will

The Calgary Zoo worked with a cultural advisory committee of local panAsian community leaders to bring unique entertainment and programming to the festival. “We have reached out to the community in a very strong way to make sure we are authentic in the way in which we present our entertainment, with the cultural programming and the lanterns themselves,” Freeman says. “We are very committed to the proper representation and authenticity of it.” ILLUMINASIA’s multicultural entertainment stage will feature everything from martial arts demonstrations to lion dancing, singing, dancing and much more.


•Experience China will take place September 17 – 27, with headliner ‘On the Silk Road’ performed by Phoenix Hua Yun Artistic Troup from Montreal. •Experience Japan will take place October 1 – 11, with headliner Kenichi Ebina, 2013 winner of America’s Got Talent. •Experience India will take place October 15 – 25, and the headliner is Sparq Productions Bollywood. ILLUMINASIA also features special programs focused on the arts, foods and culture of China, Japan and India. These programs, which require pre-registration for a fee, allow guests to learn in greater depth about the foods and cultures of these particular countries. The Calgary Zoo plans to make ILLUMINASIA an annual event, much like ZOOLIGHTS, varying and switching out the types of lanterns on display each year. In 2018, the arrival of giant pandas Er Shun and Da Mao — on loan to Canada from China as a symbol of the strong friendship between the two countries — will further add to the excitement of the Calgary Zoo’s Lantern & Garden Festival. The pandas will remain at the Calgary Zoo for five years.  n

appy dogs wag their tails. Little kids skip along the sidewalk, while their parents gossip in the sun. Everywhere, people walk. Some are arm-in-arm. Some hold fragrant coffees or freshly squeezed juices. Still others carry grocery bags and briefcases, on their way home after shopping or work. Welcome to Kensington, one of Calgary’s most popular — and oldest — communities. “Tricycles, dogs on a leash, moms with baby carriages, young men and women riding or walking to work, business owners who know their customers by name,” says Nancy Carten, owner of Kensington Wine Market. “This is Kensington, a ‘small-town gem,’ literally, in the middle of one of Canada’s most dynamic cities.” Indeed, Kensington is technically the term for the Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) that straddles Hillhurst and Sunnyside, two of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods. Located in the city’s northwest, Hillhurst-Sunnyside is just north from the downtown core, across the Bow River. Established in 1914, Hillhurst was developed after land homesteaded by Ezra Riley — who now lends

his name to Riley Park — was sold to the city. And Sunnyside was initially developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway, which built workers’ homes in the area; a street car line, located along Second Avenue N.W., transported CPR employees to and from work. These days, Hillhurst-Sunnyside is a mix of stately older homes, tiny cottages, new in-fills and condos. In Riley Park in summer, you can watch cricket players or cool off in the wading pool, or enjoy a free concert on the outdoor stage. As for the amenities, it is literally a community with everything: grocery stores, public transit, yoga, bike shops, boutiques, bars, restaurants, wine shops and more.

Start your day with a coffee and a bagel from Higher Ground (1126 Kensington Road N.W.). This familyowned coffee house is a favourite amongst locals. Curl up by the fireplace on a chilly day, or sit outside on a warm afternoon. Bonus: all the coffee is internationally certified organic, shade-grown and fair-trade. These are but a few of the many challenges that greet new immigrants upon their arrival to Canada. The Calgary Chinese Community Service Association (CCCSA) is here to lend a hand, helping Chinese who are recent immigrants to Canada adjust more easily to life in Calgary, and put down roots in their new home. And lend a hand they did in 2014, proudly serving 2,763 clients at the front desk and helping a total of 5,327 clients.

he origins of the Little Library can be traced back to 2009 when a Wisconsin man built a minischoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former teacher. It’s a concept that’s fairly new to Calgary, currently there are two little libraries located on 2nd Avenue S.W. in front of the Chinese Cultural Centre’s east entrance. Everyone is welcome to pick-up and drop off books as space permits. n

“It’s about really immersing themselves into Canada,” says CCCSA executive director, Lily Kwok. “Integration is a very long process — it’s not just about finding housing and getting a job. It’s really about immersing yourself into Canada.” Established in 1978 by Theresa Woo-Paw, the CCCSA aims to create a vibrant, more inclusive society by connecting Calgary’s Chinese community with other ethnic groups and mainstream society as a whole. A non-profit organization, CCCSA offers a wide range of programs for all ages, covering Integration and Civic Engagement; Children and Youth; and Health. Integration and Civic Engagement services help immigrants better understand Canadian culture, language and society, with a parenting education program; Chinatown safety project; information, referrals and resources; outreach clinics (legal, workers, family counseling and income tax); interpretation service, front desk services; computer classes; and English as a Second Language. The Health program even includes a tobacco use prevention course, breast cancer screening and peer support group, and health seminars. To help low income Chinese speaking families live healthier lives, CCCSA also offers a weekly ‘Green Day’ program, providing vegetables and fruits free of charge to those who need a helping hand. The CCCSA is seeking support and donors to be able to continue running this program. CCCSA’s Children and Youth program, meanwhile, is designed to help immigrant children in a variety of ways, including mastering the English language, and spring and summer camps. But efforts go beyond ‘official’ programs. For example, CCCSA helped the Power group, an organization of retirees from several utility companies, clean out the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation Camp (THCF). The cleanup consists of two bunkhouses that can hold up to 90 people and it had to be done in a day — enter a dozen of CCCSA’s volunteers.

A non-profit organization, CCCSA offers a wide range of programs for all ages, covering Integration and Civic Engagement; Children and Youth; and Health.

THCF is an interesting organization because it is fully funded by Tim Hortons. The Foundation has seven camps across the country and Kananaskis is the best one of them all. They provide free camp experiences to economically disadvantaged youths, with programs designed to help the youths become more responsible, caring and motivated individuals. It is a great experi-

由 ence, especially for immigrant children. They put through about 20,000 youths a year. More information can be found at www.thcf.com. CCCSA’s own spring camp (March 2327) was attended by 17 children aged 9-14 who conducted various science experiments to better understand what is happening around them. The children participated in the “Egg Drop Challenge,” where they had to discuss and design a structure that would be able to catch a falling egg from a height of 10 feet without breaking it, a chromatography experiment, where the children experience the wonderful separation of dyes, making play dough with flour, making food in a mug, the coke and mentos experiment, and field trips to the Telus Spark Science Centre and Spaceport at the Calgary International Airport. The immigration clinic is a new service introduced by CCCSA. Starting in 2015, former board member Mr. S. W. Lam, a regulated immigration consultant, offers a free one-on-one consultation session to individuals who seek advice on immigration. This high demand clinic has received an overwhelming response and has a long wait list, yet urgent cases are prioritized. To date, more than 30 clients have had their questions answered by Lam on issues ranging from express entry, family sponsorship to work permit application. This meaningful initiative came from Lam himself. “While researching the immigration scenery in Calgary, I learned that the Calgary Legal Guidance has an immigration advisory service in place. I want to do something similar for the Chinese community,” says Lam, who can be found every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, afternoons, meeting with clients at CCCSA. n

he Calgary Chinese Community Service Association Law & Advocacy Program is offered in partnership with Calgary Legal Guidance with funding by the Alberta Law Foundation. The Law & Advocacy Program provides basic legal advice and referrals to other organizations,a to low income Chinese speaking families in Calgary. “We increase their general knowledge on different issues,” says CCCSA Law and Advocacy Program coordinator, Shan Wong. “The people we are seeking to help, are dealing with legal issues that are very stressful, and they don’t know where to turn. By providing legal advice and a legal clinic, they will have a direction and will understand more what they need to do if they want to proceed with their claim, or find other ways to resolve a dispute.” Law and Advocacy Program services include Commissioner for oaths; legal outreach clinic; follow up legal services including client advocacy and support; legal resources and publications; educational seminars with basic information on different aspects of the law, including family law, divorce, wills, estate planning; and landlord and tenant disputes. As part of the Law and Advocacy Program, the CCCSA operates a monthly Cantonese and Mandarin radio program, in collaboration with Fairchild Radio FM 94.7, delivering legal information on a range of topics, from domestic violence to the Canadian justice system. Lawyer Carina Au is guest speaker on the Cantonese radio program, which airs the first Friday of each month from 10:15 – 11 a.m. The Mandarin program, hosted by Shan Wong, airs the second Saturday of each month from 11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. n Shan Wong

一切都是從茶和絲綢開始的。對, 就是絲綢。 點心和飲茶有著密切的關係,開始於陽光和沙塵 滾滾的絲路, 是一條歷史上著名的道路,中國和地 中海諸國之間的貿易往來, 中國出囗最多的就是 絲綢, 因而得名。疲憊的旅客在各種 攤位享用輕 食和茗茶,然而這些輕食是從什麼地方來的呢? 想到點心就會聯想到廣東, 而點心最初是起源 於中國北方。從中國古代的詩詞和音樂中, 可以 得知, 點心在公元500年後, 已經存在。最初,在 點心出囗到絲路的茶館之前,點心是供權貴享用 的。有一條理論認為,點心有一定的規格而且必 需小份, 因為第三世紀時, 有位醫生錯誤地報導, 吃大塊的食物同時喝茶,會導致體重增加。 根據唐朝的文獻記載, “點心”之名實際上是 指”輕觸心臟”。 點心的改良始於20世紀初期, 當時滿清的達官 貴人經常流連茶館 。 結果使點心文化不但蓬勃發 展而且大受歡迎 。最後, 目前的點心是由一批來 自中國的難民, 在香港創立的。 在十九世紀中期到末期之間, 香港移民把點心 引進到加拿大 , 點心很快的就在卡城繁華的市中 心地帶落地生根了。現在, 有許多中餐館每天都 有供應點心。與三十年前比起來, 已大不相同了。 在某些歷史記載中, 包括皇家亞伯達博物館中 一項有關中國餐館的展覽, 黃先生觀察到, 主要的 觀點是”點心於1980年被引進亞省。” 「我們的研究說明,事實上並非如此 。這可能 是在一個有限範圍內的資料, 但是在此之前, 點心 已有一段時間了,」 黃先生說道。「很明顯的,這 是廣東文化的一部分, 而且它讓許多人想起自己 的老家。」 銀龍酒家(Silver Dragon, 3rd Avenue S.E.), 成 立於1966年,是卡城歷史最悠久的一家中餐館。在 這裡,有很多員工為同一位東道主工作超過了10年 以上。剛開始時, 銀龍酒家只有在週末才供應點心, 而且種類也很有限。有很多中餐館的老闆,從中國 大陸 和香港招聘來專業的點心師傅。然而, 點心受 限於缺乏新鮮食材和有限的消費顧客群。

icture a sultry Saturday afternoon, that nebulous time between lunch and dinner when most restaurants are silent and empty. Now picture a busy room with hundreds of snacks brought to you in carts. The snacks are baked and steamed, fried and seared, trailing aromas like coloured ribbons. There are few better ways to spend a lazy afternoon than with a handful of friends at one of Calgary’s many dim sum restaurants. Dim sum is also known as yum-cha, or tea-sampling. This beloved Chinese cuisine is characterized by small bite-sized portions, casual day-time dining, and a unique push-cart service found at many restaurants. It is a Cantonese cultural staple consumed, as its other name suggests, with tea. While other refreshment-type cuisines exist across China, there is no doubt that dim sum is the most well-known among them. “I’ll wager many people in Calgary have experienced a Chinese colleague casually inviting them out to eat dim

sum,” says researcher Jason Wong. “It’s a common phrase used in gratitude, greetings, and farewells.” Wong, together with colleague Caroline Lieffers, explored the origins and cultural significance of dim sum in Alberta in an article published by Cuizine: The Journal of Canadian Food Cultures in May, 2014. It all began with tea and silk. Yes, silk. Dim sum is intimately tied to the Chinese tradition of tea tasting, which started in the sun and dust along the Silk Road, a historically significant international trade route between China and the Mediterranean. Much of the product moving out of China was silk, hence the name. Weary travelers stopped at assorted vendor stalls to partake in tea and light refreshments. But where did the dishes come from? While dim sum is inextricable from Canton, it first originated in northern China. Recovered poetry and music suggest some form of dim sum may have existed as early as 500 BC. the Silk Road. One theory posits that the small portions of dim sum were standardized because a third century physician inaccurately reported that eating large amounts while drinking tea causes weight gain. The name “dim sum,” which literally means ‘to touch the heart,’ was coined in the Tang Dynasty. Dim sum transformed in the early 20th century, when Manchurian nobility frequently visited tea houses. This resulted in a flourish of dim sum culture and popularity. Eventually, the current form of dim sum was established in Hong Kong by an exodus of refugees from mainland China. Brought to Canada in the mid-to-late-1900s by immigrants from Hong Kong, dim sum has quickly found a place in the bustling core of downtown Calgary. Today, there are many Chinese restaurants serving dim sum daily. Quite a change from thirty years ago. In some historical records, including an exhibit on Chinese restaurants at the Royal Alberta Museum, Wong observes that the predominant understanding is that “dim sum was introduced here in the 1980s.” “Our research shows that this isn’t the case. It may have been on a limited scale, but dim sum has been here a long time before that,” says Wong. “It is such a significant part of Cantonese culture, and reminds many of home.” Silver Dragon (3rd Avenue S.E.) is one of Calgary’s oldest restaurants, established in 1966. Many of the staff have worked there for decades under the same owners. Restaurants like the Silver Dragon offered dim sum tentatively at first — on weekends or in limited varieties. Many brought professional dim sum chefs from mainland China or Hong Kong. However, dim sum was initially limited by the lack of fresh ingredients and a restricted consumer base. With an influx of Chinese immigrants in the late 1960s and ‘70s, dim sum quickly grew over the decades. Wong recalls fondly, “My parents came in the early ‘80s, and they remember when dim sum was only served on the weekends. They were really excited.” More critical culinary savants may ask, “Is dim sum in Calgary authentic?” The answer is complex. Dim sum dishes have transformed repeatedly since their conception. The dishes found in Calgary range from traditional to experimental, and many are equivalent to those one

might find in tea houses in Hong Kong. Authenticity, Wong suggests, is found in the dining rituals and cultural traditions surrounding dim sum. “Going to dim sum with non-Chinese friends and going with extended family are two completely different experiences. Even though you’re eating the same food,” Wong explains. “We differ in things like who eats first, or who pours tea for who, or why you tap your knuckles on the table. We send the youngest children to wait in line or flag down a cart of grandma’s favourite dish.” “There is hierarchy and inherent social structure in the experience,” Wong concludes. Authenticity is found in the cultural practice, in the community, as much as the dishes themselves.  n

im sum, like many cuisines, can be healthy or not depending on consumer choices. According to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department of Hong Kong (FEHD), the “total fat, saturated fat and sodium contents of some Chinese dim sum were quite high, whilst the calcium and dietary fiber contents were generally low.” But this does not mean it is impossible to eat a healthy and balanced dim sum meal. For the nutrition-conscious, and for the veterans of dim sum dining, FEHD recommends choosing dishes that are “low in total fat and rich in complex carbohydrates” as their main dishes. These include various steamed buns and rice rolls, both popular and delicious options. Most dim sum restaurants also offer various boiled vegetable dishes, and if these are not on their dim sum menus or carts the staff are usually more than happy to take requests. Of course, the universal advice of moderation when ordering salty and deep-fried dishes apply in eating dim sum as well.  n

im sum, like many other cultural foods, can be an acquired taste. The more adventurous will find the exotic presentation, flavours, and unique service easy to love. Others, however, may require convincing. These are tidbits to think about when introducing dim sum to a newcomer. 1] Pick an appropriate venue. Small family restaurants such as Bobby Chao’s (Edgedale Drive N.W.) or Ginger Beef Bistro House (Country Hills Boulevard N.E.) are quieter, but many of them do not showcase the unique pushcarts and sampling experiences. Surveying a large selection of dishes and ordering “these buns” and “those dumplings” is more fun than filling orders on a partially English slip. For a larger restaurant with pushcarts, Regency Palace (Centre Street S.E.) and Dragon Chinese Restaurant (5th Avenue S.E.) are just a few of the choices. A good buffet-style Dim Sum experience can be had at Asian Buffet on Bonaventure Drive S.E. Be sure to go early or late — and avoid Chinese holidays — as the bustle and crowds may scare off timid newcomers. 2] Order with consideration. Dim sum tends towards a wide assortment of rich and subtle textures. The succulence of the shumai skins offsets the crunch of prawn or caviar. A selection of three pan-fried cakes (turnip, water chestnut, and taro) showcase the wildly different ingredients. If your guest is reluctant, perhaps forego your favourite phoenix claws and begin with perfectly baked barbecue pork buns. Instead of beef tripe, perhaps the flavourful spareribs. Make sure your exotic dishes are placed on the table while there is other food available. 3] Share dim sum traditions and stories. Dim sum is ultimately a cultural experience, and newcomers to the cuisine may appreciate stories of its origins or insights into specific rituals. The tale of the Manchurian Qianlong Emperor is a favourite. According to the stories, he poured tea for his subjects during a covert venture out of the palace. In order not to draw attention, his grateful subjects rapped their knuckles on the table in lieu of kowtowing.  n

xcitement is in the air in East Village, as Calgary’s most anticipated inner-city redevelopment project is quickly realizing its vision. Adding to the excitement is FRAM + Slokker’s Verve condos, which is just about to start construction and release their long awaited live-work suites. Despite the gloomy economic forecast in Calgary, everything seems to be going apace at East Village where this summer is bringing a new sense of optimism. Construction is going briskly for the new National Music Centre and Central Public Library – two key pieces in the rejuvenation of this historic community – St. Patrick’s Island will also be opening soon and the recently unveiled St. Patrick’s Bridge connecting it to Memorial Drive has been a haven for joggers and cyclists alike. “Everyone is so excited to be a part of this emerging community and what it has to offer with its balance of downtown convenience in a parkside setting,” says FRAM + Slokker Director of Sales, Deb Petersen. The 25-storey, nearly 300-suite tower is an essential part of the East Village vision, holding court in the centre of The Riff pedestrian walkway – what is envisioned to be one of the busiest commercial and retail districts in East Village. “Sales have been very strong. had no choice but to redesign the high-rise to add new homes to the plan. About 100 units were added to the original plans. They didn’t only add new homes, but new floor plans, as well. Verve introduced a 730-square-foot two-bedroom, two-bath suite priced under $400,000 that has sold “exceptionally well.” The layout and price made it a popular choice. Verve has also released their last premium floors near the top of the tower with sub-penthouse designs, all are two-bedroom-plus-den plans with incredible views. Despite what many believe will be a down year in Calgary brought about by plunging oil prices, FRAM + Slokker’s Fred Serrafero believes 2015 will still be a milestone year for the Ontario-based developer. For one thing, they will be welcoming the first residents to their initial development, FIRST, this summer. “The completion of FIRST condo this year is another milestone for our firm. ousing starts might have been up month-to-month from May to June, but that’s not a trend experts predict will last long. Looking at monthly statistics only can be a bit of an optical illusion, however, as one or two big condo projects can skew the numbers. In fact, multi-unit housing starts in June reached the second highest monthly total since March 2008, with 1,316 units breaking ground. Despite the elevated level of multi-unit residences initiated last month, starts in this sector were still down 26 per cent from June 2014. Single-detached starts in June also declined from the same month a year earlier. A more representative picture of the state of the local housing market can be seen when looking at the year-to-date figures, which show 2015 down 28 per cent total from last year for the first six months of the year (January-June). See chart. “Total housing

starts trended upward in June as multi-unit residential construction increased compared to last month,” says Richard Cho, CMHC’s Principal of Market Analysis for Calgary. “While the pace of total housing starts rose in June, this trend is not expected to persist throughout the year. Increased supply of new homes, coupled with weakened demand, will moderate new home construction,” adds Cho. The statistics also showed the downtown area as the sector with the most starts in June 2015, with 229, again boistered by multi-family development. As far the more traditional single-family markets, the Northwest again saw the bulk of the action, although significantly less than last year at this time. See chart. he name might seem silly, but Twitter is one serious communication tool. It’s also one of the easiest social media platforms to use, but suffers from being misunderstood, a victim of its own simplicity. With its 140-character, short message platform, Twitter’s uses seem limited, yet it can be incredibly powerful. With Katy Perry having more than 68 million Twitter followers those 140 characters can have a lot of impact. And it’s not just the entertainment industry taking advantage of the technology. Barrack Obama is third on the list of world’s most Twitter followers with more than 58 million. In Calgary, Mayor Naheed Nenshi boasts more than 234,000 followers, nearly a quarter the population, and credits a large part of his political success to not just his social media campaigns but also his ongoing social media availability — he replies to every Tweet. It’s a way for people to get messages out to large groups of interested individuals, and in turn receive feedback from the recipients, and it’s all voluntary. If you don’t care what someone had for breakfast this morning, or what they think of last night’s Flames game, don’t follow them. There are two main types of users: those using Twitter for business and those using it for personal reasons. One way businesses use it is to maximize brand exposure and promote timely specials to their followers/customers. Twitter’s short message format is easy to send, easy to read and share, and easy to act on instantaneously. Just as important as sending messages in today’s business environment, is listening to them. Customers have more opportunity to give feedback than ever before therefore businesses have

On the personal side, individuals use Twitter in many ways. Heavy Twitter users seem to be broken down into a couple of sub categories: Tweeters and Listeners. Those who Tweet heavily are often using Twitter as their public forum to voice opinions, vent frustrations, support a cause or to self promote. It’s like a Facebook post except shorter with greater potential reach. The listeners are interesting too. They are rarely heard from online, but they follow the news, current events and promotions of their favourite brands loyally, using Twitter to instantly support or deny new reports, without feeling the need to share their own tweets. News happens on Twitter in real time and people feel they get the truth versus what we are fed hours later on TV or in newspapers. And, finally, exactly what IS a #hashtag? Using the # in front of a word or a short series of words, creates a live link inside of Twitter. If others use the same hashtag this says that they are participating in the same conversation. When that link is clicked on all the Tweets using that hashtag will appear, allowing followers to view all the thoughts being shared on the topic. With Twitter’s design to be a truly public forum, we now all have a say in the things we love and hate. A tweet can make someone’s day or destroy it, so use your powers wisely out in Twitterverse!  n
