WELCOME TO SOURCING SUMMIT 2016 After meeting with several agents, factory groups, virtual manufactures and brands themselves while on a three-week fact finding trip throughout South Asia this year, it became clear what we would call this year’s summit. There was one word which repeated itself no matter the country, the size of the retailer or number of lines in the factory we visited, and that was uncertainty. I have written some provocative pieces over the past few months on the state of sourcing. I’ve made some bold statements and predictions that made me some friends and most certainty annoyed others. But I stand behind my belief that our industry is on the brink of massive change, and a combination of bad business, shifting consumer preferences and poor sourcing decisions will result in a very different retail landscape in the not so distant future. Unable to drive traffic, establish themselves online or create a sense of cool, traditional brands are slowly falling into extinction. Part of this some would say is natural brand and business cycles, some however is avoidable if good business principles are followed and companies stay relevant and adapt. Raw materials are seeing an increase after years at a relatively stable level and some predict they will continue to rise. The supply chain cannot afford upward pricing pressures right now. Prices at retail continue on a deflationary trend downward and fullfiling orders to meet these retail demands are becoming a very difficult task. Margins are just being eroded as rising costs and promotions are leaving nothing left. It seems every part of the supply chain is facing pressure as new players enter and old players struggle to reinvent themselves. This year’s conference is not about popular brands touting their successes. On the contrary, it is about companies, mostly looking at the industry and sourcing from the outside offering insight, recommendations and help for an industry riddled with stress, pressure and a tremendous amount of uncertainty.
