Welcome to the second annual Sourcing Summit: Hong Kong. This year, as we welcome you back to the international edition of our marquee event, we’re talking about change. Or really, the lack thereof.
Really, sourcing executives are afraid to change. John Kenneth Galbraith, famed Canadian-born economist, may have put it best when he said, “Faced with the choice between changing one’s mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof.” That ethos, unsurprisingly, isn’t serving the industry. A big part of this year’s conference, Accelerating Change: What’s New, Now and Next, will be about flipping the script on the sourcing conversation in order to advance change in a real way. We’ll hear from the factory floor about where the bottlenecks to supply chain success are, find out what the U.S.-China trade struggle means for modern factories on both sides of the Pacific, learn where China is leading on future-facing tech, and uncover how sourcing’s key leaders are changing the paradigm in the face of apparel’s new world order. It’s clear our industry is slow to adapt, but let’s stop defending our ways or pretending we know our customers, or have changed our business models. Let’s start accepting our market positions, learn from as many insiders and outsiders as possible and be the change agents the industry really needs. Edward Hertzman Founder & President Sourcing Journal

Dramatic change can hardly take shape in the midst of like-minded people still surrounded by outmoded ideals. Change comes from seeking different perspectives and stepping outside of comfort zones, and the failure to do so is where the apparel supply chain has erred.

65 PERCENT of the apparel industry believes environmental and sustainability goals have an impact on companies’ overall success.
SUSTAINABILITY: FROM BUZZWORD TO BIG BUSINESS
Apparel is embracing responsible sourcing as a way to improve the planet and its products.
S
USTAINABILITY IS ON the rise in the apparel industry. And the reason is clear: not only is sustainability good for the planet, but it’s also beneficial to the bottom line. With this realization, sustainability has moved from the sidelines to the core of fashion firms both big and small. The Sourcing Journal 2018 Sustainability Report showed 65 percent of the apparel industry believes environmental and sustainability goals have an impact on companies’ overall success. Further, 82 percent believe being environmentally responsible provides an edge in the market. From fast fashion to the luxury sector, brands are committing to tangible change. Just look at H&M’s ambitious goal of sourcing 100 percent recycled or sustainably sourced materials by 2030 and Levi’s goal of reducing carbon emissions by 40 percent across the supply chain by 2025. Also, off-price retailers, hypermarkets and discounters are embracing sustainability. Some of them, very strongly. The industry is taking action—and consumers are taking note. But these companies can’t achieve their objectives on their own. Transformation on this scale takes cooperation across the entire supply chain—and it starts at the source. Two-thirds of the industry is reportedly focused on manufacturing in a sustainable manner, while 63 percent are working to use sustainable raw materials. Synergies Worldwide is instrumental in championing sustainability initiatives—economic, social and environmental—on behalf of its clients. The company has established responsible, affordable sourcing options around the globe. Synergies India operates more and more in GOTS-certified factories that have a focus on baby, kids’ and men’s wear. Similarly, Synergies operations in Bangladesh primarily works with factories that are both GOTS and Global Recycled Standard certified. Synergies also has close ties with a recycled (cotton) yarn mill in Bangladesh (www.cyclofibers.com) and procures recycled polyester yarn and fabrics from China. In Pakistan, Synergies partners with denim factories that work with organic cotton and utilize sustainable washing methods. Additionally, Pakistan specializes in recycled cotton polyester fleece and French terry products. Learn more about elevating your sustainability efforts, visit Synergies Worldwide at synergiesworldwide.com.
