Welcome to our Spring/Easter magazine. I’m writing this letter to you in lovely sunshine, a blue sky, not too much cloud and not so cold that I have to wear a thick jumper. Long may it continue. Spring has a real positive feel to it, with flowers and tree blossom starting, warmer days breaking through and lots of fun days out to look forward to in the school holidays. Do look through all our hundreds of listings. Some of them are free to enter but all include contact details so do check the events before visiting. We prepare our listings a long time in advance and details do change. Spring is a busy time of the year. Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday is on 22 March. Easter Weekend is 10-13 April. The London Marathon is on Sunday 26 April. Brighton Fringe is from 1-31 May. Then there’s St Patrick’s Day on Tuesday 17 March and St George’s Day on Thursday 23 April. Not forgetting Save the Frogs Day on Saturday 25 April! Don’t forget that the May Day Bank Holiday has changed from Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May to celebrate the 75th VE Day anniversary. Whatever you are celebrating, enjoy the next few weeks. We always have lots of great competitions for you to enter but sometimes we can’t give the prizes out to the actual winner as they haven’t included contact details for themselves. We don’t pass contact details on to any other companies so please do remember to include them with your competition entries. Entries can be sent by post or by email. See our Competitions Page for more details. We’ll be back the week beginning Monday 11 May. Happy Easter!

An International Dining Experience
Aiming to Support Your Community
GLL, the UK’s largest leisure charitable social enterprise, supports local community projects and talented athletes, through its two foundations – the GLL Community Foundation and GLL Sport Foundation. Under its social enterprise ethos, GLL reinvests financial surpluses from its sport, leisure and cultural facilities – operated nationwide under the Better brand – to help improve lives in the communities that it serves, including investment in communities and local people through GLL’s foundations: GLL Community Foundation (GCF) The community foundation provides grant funding and practical ‘in kind’ support with a value of up to £5,000 per individual project, to a wide range of community schemes, including the creation and renovation of public spaces such as parks or gardens, running sports tournaments or supporting cultural or community events. Greenwich Royals Gymnastics Club raised a massive £5,500 to purchase much needed gymnastics equipment. The community foundation was able to help assist fundraising by offering event space to raise funds, engagement prizes and £1500 in cash! GLL works in partnership with crowdfunding platform Spacehive to bring community ideas to life. This innovative way of raising money allows for projects to reach a wide audience and funders. GLL Sport Foundation (GSF) The Foundation helps talented young athletes reach their sporting potential and is the UK’s largest independent athlete support programme in the UK. GSF provides athletes with financial support, physiotherapy and free gym memberships at GLL operated facilities across the country. In 2019, GSF supported over 3,000 athletes across 117 sporting disciplines, taking its total investment to £11 million in 11 years. Previously, this support has contributed to the success of athletes including Olympic and World Champion Anthony Joshua and Greenwich Olympic weightlifter Zoe Smith. For more information on GLL Community Foundation, please visit www.better.org.uk/gll-community-foundation. For GSF visit www.gllsportfoundation.org

St Michael’s Young Choir Festival
Southeast London already has several well-respected choir festivals achieving high standards. Sarah Burnard, founder and co-ordinator of St Michael’s Young Choir Festival at St Michael’s Church, Blackheath Park, has decided on a new approach. Sarah told Primary Times, “Our special focus is on getting young children involved in music for the first time. All our singers are in school years 3 to 6, and we have one competition just for newly formed choirs, with others for more experienced groups. We aim to help schools who would love to bring music into their children’s lives but are prevented by lack of budget. So, unusually for a choir festival, we have no entry fee. A choir which has only been going for a few months can get free top-level professional help and advice, plus a written report on their performance. Music is one of God’s great gifts and we think that getting it into young lives is very important.” The Festival (which is British and International Federation of Festivals approved) will take place on 13 June. Entries close on 31 March. Non-competitors pay a small entry fee of £3 and under 12s go free. For more information, contact Sarah at sarah@ rosepeach.co.uk or call 020 8852 7887.

2020 Mini Marathon
The 2020 Mini Marathon in aid of Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice will return to Royal Greenwich Park on Sunday 3 May. This 2.62-mile sponsored fun run is for children aged between 5 and 16 years old. Since 2013, more than 8,000 local heroes have taken part in the Hospice Mini Marathon and raised an incredible £398,000. The charity supports local families, making sure that they don’t have to face a terminal illness alone. They have helped families receive the support and care that they need and deserve at a very difficult time in their lives. There are only 1,800 Mini Marathon places available and the event has sold out in the recent years, so by signing up early you can guarantee that your child has a place. Competitors will need to arrive at 9.15am for a 9.45am warm up. The fun will begin at 10am. Children aged between 5 and 7 years old must run with a responsible adult. Registration costs £7.50 per child, which includes a medal and a JLL sponsored goody bag. Online registration will close at 4.30pm on 17 April. Registration will not be available on the day. For more information, visit www.communityhospice.org.uk.

This Easter sees the triumphant return of the Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival, one of the country’s leading festivals of performance for young people. Launched in 2008, the festival now welcomes some of the UK’s leading theatre companies presenting work for families and children – and this year is no different. Highlights of the programme, which runs from 5 to 19 April, include big names like Rapunzel and, CBBC favourite, Sarah and Duck, alongside a host of new shows. Little Darling, which launches the festival on 5 April, tells the story of Michael Darling, brother to Wendy and one-time friend to Peter Pan, who finds himself all grown-up and yearning for those days when he could fly in Neverland. Meet Me A Tree, from the acclaimed Hurly Burly Theatre Company, is a new opera for the very youngest theatregoers. Roald Dahl and the Imagination Seekers, specially commissioned by Puffin Books, is an interactive show that imagines a world where Roald Dahl’s stories are disappearing from the bookshelves and from the minds of children. With performance workshops in drama, clowning and puppetry also planned, alongside a host of other shows, plus a circus finale from Cirque Enfant
to close the festival, this year’s line-up is looking as impressive as ever. Greenwich could be the number one family destination for the long Easter holidays. For more information about Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival, visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk.
Zippo’s Circus Back on Blackheath

And back by popular demand is Paulo Dos Santos, a brilliant 3 foot 6 inches (107cm) tall showman, acrobat and physical comedian. The whole show is all presented under the watchful eye of the world’s greatest ringmaster (and budgie-trainer!) Norman Barrett MBE. West End to Broadway, Rock Legends to Superheroes
An amazing opportunity awaits for children wishing to create their own characters within their very own devised musicals this Easter and Summer at the Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School, one of London’s leading independent stage schools. All weekend, evening and holiday workshops are led by West End and industry professionals seeking to nurture talent, build confidence, and foster wellbeing in children aged 4-18. Weekly inspirational quotes help to motivate the students in all areas of their life. One parent told Primary Times, “The course and final production exceeded our expectations once again as we were left perplexed thinking how are they going to re-enact their own version of Bugsy in a week. He ended every day practising or telling us about something new he had learnt. Our son’s confidence has grown so much….”
This award-winning stage school has part-time branches in Hackney, Docklands, Greenwich and Camden. Many students have secured leading roles on TV, film and on the West End stage thanks to its agency. However, it is just as interested in those that wish to increase in confidence, self-esteem and life skills. To book into a Holiday School or a Taster Day at one of the parttime Saturday or evening schools, visit www.annafiorentini.com or call 020 7682 1403. For adults that also wish to have fun and learn new performing arts skills there is www.stageandthecity.com.

Step Up Free Session
Nathalie Richardson started Step Up 24 years ago whilst she was still at The Guildhall School of Music. Over the years the school has had a great deal of success, winning Comic Relief Does Glee on BBC1, appearing on Don’t Stop Believing on Channel 5, Pitch Battle on BBC1, Britain’s Got Talent, X Factor and The Voice. Through their agency, many students have appeared in West End shows such as The Lion King, Les Misérables and Matilda. Many students who attended Step Up have gone on to have careers in the performing arts The stage school has a very personal atmosphere as well as excellent tuition. They aim to give children a wide range of experiences, from end of term shows, West End shows and Trinity Guildhall exams for all students. Step Up also runs an annual talent contest that is adjudicated by an external judge. Classes start at two years old where pupils get 45 mins of performing arts. From four years upwards they get the option of a 90-minute session or a 3-hour session. All classes are small, and the main aim is for children to develop their skills and confidence in a warm and positive environment. You can go to a free session of Step Up any Saturday in term time. For more information visit www.stepupschool.co.uk, email stepup@btinternet.com or call 020 8293 5848.
Celebrations at All the Arts
All the Arts Theatre School are celebrating after being named Theatre School business of the year at the Young Entertainment Academy Awards, which was recently held at The Churchill Theatre. Not only this, the school’s pupils swept the board winning trophies in almost all categories, including best actor, best singer, best dancer, best musical theatre performer and the much sought after Commitment to the Community Award. School principal, Lucy Morgans told Primary Times, “We are so proud of these huge successes and it’s great to be recognised, but what is equally rewarding is that we are still making huge waves with our pupils 16 years after opening our doors. Many of our former pupils are now professional performers as well as qualified dance and drama teachers, but what really makes it all worthwhile is when a shy or nervous child starts our sessions and we help them blossom into a confident young person. Having the
confidence to stand up and talk or interact well in social and school situations is immeasurable and benefits all aspects of life.” The school is enrolling again after Easter with limited spaces for ages 3 to 19 years available. They also offer their hugely popular Summer Course in August, which is based on the hit movie Descendants. You can book a trial session via the school’s website, www.allthearts. co.uk.

Each week, participants will develop new cricketing skills including batting, bowling and fielding. They will have the chance to play a fast-paced and exciting game of countdown cricket – a new format that mirrors The Hundred. Parents can find out more about Dynamos Cricket and sign their kids up to take part at www.dynamoscricket.co.uk or for All Stars Cricket at www.allstarscricket.co.uk.

Did you know? Computer coding is one of the key digital life skills that will prepare your child for the future. As computers permeate every facet of our lives, it is a well-known fact that the digital skills gap has been increasing. In the UK alone, it’s thought that close to a million jobs will remain unfilled in 2020. Computer coding is a key digital life skill, and like spoken languages, the earlier you start, the more competent you will be. Spark4Kids are running allday holiday workshops that introduce children to computer coding through the medium of games. Courses are available on Minecraft Modding, Roblox Coding, Robotics, Games Design, MicroBit and Arduino coding, Unity/C#, Python, HTML/CSS and JavaScript in a fun, engaging environment. The courses are available for age groups 5-7, 8-12 and 13-16 years. The holiday workshops are taking place in Dulwich from Monday 6 April through to Thursday 9 April. Visit the Spark4Kids website at www. s4k.me/2020eastercoding or call 020 8090 1444 for more details.
Any type of performance requires teamwork to succeed. At Stagecoach, children learn that “It’s not just you on stage. You are responsible for a larger group that is counting on you to do your part, so they can do theirs.” At the end of the day, the transferable skills a child learns from performing may not be nearly as important as the experience of performing itself. Simply being part of the performance process, your child will be exposed to a new way of thinking and doing. That alone is a success to be proud of.

How the Performing Arts Benefit Children
Children, who perform, gain skills that extend far beyond the standing ovation. Research shows that children who sing, dance, act and play tend to have enhanced cognitive, motor, and social development too. Stagecoach know that the act of performing on stage can enrich your child’s life in all sorts of surprising ways. Performance skills equip children with the ability to “think on their feet”, using their creativity and imagination. When the play goes wrong, children learn to come up with quick solutions to cover up mistakes and work as a team. We all have moments when we feel nervous. Feeling nervous before performing is completely natural. Children learn to use nerves positively, which can put them at a huge advantage in big life moments. Hearing the audience clap at the end of the show is an incredible feeling. Yet it’s more than just the ego boost from the fans. ASK ABOUT OUR TWO WEEK TRIAL

252 million years ago, in a period called the Permian, life on Earth was dominated by extraordinary creatures. It was a time of fearsome sabre-toothed predators, giant insects and bizarre-looking sharks which ended with a mass extinction that destroyed 90% of all life, paving the way for the Earth’s next great rulers… the dinosaurs. Discover this mysterious time period in Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs, a fascinating, family-friendly exhibition travelling to the UK for the first time. Catch it at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill until 1 November. From Dictodons to Dimetrodons, Ennatosaurus to Eotitanosuchus, the exhibition vividly brings the inhabitants of the Permian period back to life through fossil skeletons, full-size models and animatronics.Visitors can also sift through interactive dig pits, get creative in an art area, and see a collection of artwork offering a glimpse back in time through the eyes of award-winning palaeoartist, Julius Csotonyi. The Horniman will be hosting special activities linked to the exhibition during half term. Meet a Superhero
Children visiting the Broadway Shopping Centre, Bexleyheath this Easter will be invited to try out their superhero skills. On Good Friday and Easter Saturday, five larger than life superheroes - Thanos, Batman, Spiderman, Starlord and Captain Marvel - will be in the Centre demonstrating their special skills at shows between 11.00am and 3.00pm on both days, and inviting children to take part in a fancy dress parade at 12.30pm. As well as being taught some of their powers, these Marvel-ous icons will get the children taking part in the Superhero Quest around the Centre looking for clues, and when they return to the entertainment zone, they will be given masks and cloaks. Then, it’s photo time with their favourite superhero. All photos will be beamed onto the Centre’s Facebook page, with great prizes to be won. There will also be free craft workshops where young superheroes can show off their creativity by making superhero pen pots. Rai Holdstock, Centre Manager of the Broadway Shopping Centre, told Primary Times, “With blockbuster films featuring superheroes and super villains, children are fascinated by people with superpowers and love to pretend that they too can emulate these icons of fiction. We hope our mini superheroes will enjoy meeting their icons and taking part in the Quest around the Centre.”
Hop into Easter Fun at Hever Castle
Family fun at Hever Castle and Gardens throughout the Easter holidays promises to put a spring in your step. Hunt for the colourful carrots and the Hever bunny in their fun free Easter trail, or take part in an Easter egg hunt in the grounds. Each child will receive a chocolate for completing the trail and a mini chocolate egg for each Easter egg they find. Take part in an Easter themed trail in the Castle to learn about creatures that hatch and create an eggshaped decoration to hang on Hever’s Easter tree. Visitors aged 7 to 14 can explore the Tudor Towers adventure playground with its own moat, drawbridge and three turrets. It features three slides and two poles and lots of interactive elements including musical instruments, a maze and hidden boxes to find. Under 7s can enjoy the natural play area, Acorn Dell, with its two-metre-high living willow structure, a giant sandpit, a mound with tunnels to clamber in and a climbing frame. Challenge yourself in the Yew Maze and see how long it takes you to find the way out and try not to get wet in the Water Maze. Visitors can then round off the day with seasonal home cooked food and mouth-watering cakes in the restaurant. Easter activities will be running at Hever Castle from 2 to 19 April. An Easter Egg Hunt by Tube and Steam Train The Epping Ongar Railway has a special Easter Egg Hunt from 10 to 13 April. It stretches over 5 miles from Ongar to Coopersale with 10 eggs hidden in various places. Find them all and collect an Easter Egg prize from the shop. In addition to the hunt there will be other activities for the children including colouring sheets, a magician, face painting and, of course, the Easter Bunny. In addition, the Epping Ongar Railway is the only steam railway with a direct connection to the tube at Epping. A typical journey time from Stratford is 26 minutes and, as Epping is in Zone 6, for many the off-peak fare is just £1.50. From Epping, a traditional London Bus will pick you up from outside the station. This brilliant combination of egg hunt, fun onboard and the magic of travelling by a steam train and heritage bus must make this one of the places to take the family this Easter. You can also go and see Peppa Pig and her little brother George. Take a ride on the steam and diesel trains and see the cheeky little piggies at intervals on 25 May. Tickets cost £16 for adults, £10 for children and a family ticket costs £43. Epping Ongar Railway Family Railcards are valid. For more information, visit www.eorailway.co.uk.
Easter Activities in the City of London There’re lots of ways to stay entertained this Easter in London. The Roman London Family Quest will take place on 8 April. Hunt down the parts of Roman London that can still be seen today. Discover London’s Roman Amphitheatre, pay your respects at the Temple of Mithras and relax at Billingsgate Roman House and Baths. Follow the fact-filled walking map and visit the three sites in any order you choose, completing fun activities at each location to complete the quest and claim your prize. On the Second Saturday of every month (11 April and 9 May), enjoy free family activities at Guildhall Art Gallery and London’s Roman Amphitheatre. In April, try your hand at decorating eggs inspired by the ornate designs in The Enchanted Interior exhibition. Under 12s get into the exhibition for free, and on the second Saturday, children can bring an adult in for free too. On the 17 April, check out the Fraud and Forgery activities at the City of London Police Museum. Could you spot fake money? Do you know how to spot a scam? Attend this masterclass to learn how to detect frauds and forgeries. All activities run from 11am to 4pm. For more information, visit www.cityoflondon.gov.uk.
Easter at The Historic Dockyard
Spring has officially arrived at The Historic Dockyard this Easter. The new season means warmer weather (fingers crossed!) and longer days, so break out your sunnies and let the kids release some of that stored up energy. Get outside and dive into a school holiday packed with maritime adventure. Back by popular demand, Doc.Yard returns with a new ‘spring’ extravaganza (between 4 and 11 April). Explore the science behind forces and mechanics through fun activities and live demonstrations that will keep the whole family entertained. Look and listen for the signs of spring around the Dockyard on the Easter trail and enjoy hands-on craft activities in No.1 Smithery (between 14 and 19 April). Whether you’re stepping aboard HMS Gannet, awaking the crew by ringing HMS Cavalier’s bell, descending into the depths of HM Submarine Ocelot or being shown the ropes by the Master Ropemaker, signs of spring are bursting up throughout the historic site. Stroll around The Dockyard’s green spaces and see the daffodils blooming and hear the bees buzzing. The Commissioner’s Garden makes the perfect spot to sit quietly and watch nature come out to play. All activities are included in your entry ticket. To spring into action and book your experience, visit thedockyard.co.uk. And that’s not all - The Festival of Steam and Transport is back for Easter Sunday and Monday (12 and 13 April). Anything goes for this event. Whether you’re a steam fanatic, a classic car collector, a steampunk follower or you’re just looking for a fantastic family day out, this Festival has it all. 18

Colfe’s School – Caring for the Environment
Colfe’s School has been educating local children in south-east London for 350 years. While proud of its history, Colfe’s is very much a school of the future and it is constantly striving to empower its pupils to look after and make a difference to their own environment. There are a number of pupil-driven ‘ecoinitiatives’ at the school. At a recent ‘Zero Waste’ sustainable pop-up stall, caterers presented examples of ways to monitor, manage and reduce food waste. The results were delicious! During the school’s ‘Protect the Planet Day’, nursery children collected litter and made a ‘Save the Planet’ poster. Junior School ‘Eco-Champs’ have been encouraging fellow pupils to make small but important changes in their daily lives. This includes recycling and reusable water bottles, discouraging the use of single-use plastic and not accepting plastic carrier bags. Single-use plastic bottles will be banned from the school

Walk for Wellbeing
Thousands of children across the UK will celebrate the benefits of walking during Walk to School Week from 18 to 22 May. Walk to School Week is organised by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, as part of their National Walking Month campaign each May. Families will be encouraged to walk, cycle, scoot or ‘Park and Stride’ for the whole week to see the big differences that come from healthier and happier children to fewer cars outside the school gates. This year, the charity will specifically focus on the health and wellbeing benefits that come from being active. Walk to School Week classroom packs will have activities for pupils to complete on the way to school and in the classroom, which focus on their wellbeing, including how walking helps with their physical health as well as their mood, concentration and creativity. Walk to School Week also plays host to Happy Shoesday on Tuesday 19 May, when pupils wear the shoes that make them smile or design their own shoe capes and donate £1 to Living Streets’ road safety work. For more information on Walk to School Week and to get your classroom packs, visit www.livingstreets.org.uk/wtsw. Photo credit: Living Streets
A Tutor that Suits You
Primary Times spoke to Stephanie Atkinson from Tutor Doctor. She told us, “We had a simple idea and a desire to make a difference. We wondered why parents had to adjust their family’s busy schedules and drive half way across town just to put their child in another classroom with other children… when in fact it was probably the classroom experience that their child was struggling with in the first place. “At Tutor Doctor we offer in home 1-2-1 tutoring. We create a programme that is right for your child and then match a qualified tutor who suits your child’s personality and academic needs. We improve your child’s confidence and organisation skills, to help them be more effective and succeed in education.” Go along and meet some of the guys from Tutor Doctor at Tesco’s in Elmers End Superstore, Croydon Road, Beckenham on 11 April between 9am and 5pm or call Stephanie on 020 8059 6574. Tutor Doctor is running STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths) workshops between 4 and 5pm at Woolwich Library on Monday 30 March and 27 April (continuing on a monthly basis). Workshops will also run at Mycenae House over the Easter holidays on Monday 6, Tuesday 14, and Friday 17 April, from 10.30am-12noon.
