Winners of The Laugh Out Loud Book Awards We told you in the last issue about the Laugh Out Loud Awards (“The Lollies”), a set of awards created by Scholastic, to celebrate the funniest children’s books. The winners have now been announced. The award is now in its fourth successful year. The Lollies were awarded in three categories: Best Laugh Out Loud Picture Book, Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 6–8s and Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 9–13s. The winners were selected from a shortlist drawn up by a panel of judges, which included head judge, Michael Rosen, children’s novelist, poet and former Children’s Laureate. Teachers and their classes, parents and children were then encouraged to get involved to read and discuss the books and cast their vote for their favourites in each category to determine the winning titles. Teachers were able to cast votes online on behalf of their class, and children were also able to vote via the PopJam app. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

The winners are: Best Laugh Out Loud Picture Book Ten Fat Sausages by Michelle Robinson and Tor Freeman Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 6–8 year olds The World’s Worst Children 3 by David Walliams and Tony Ross Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 9–13 year olds I Bet I Can Make You Laugh by Joshua Seigal and Tim Wesson Head Lollies Judge, Michael Rosen, told Primary Times, “Funny books are a fantastic springboard into reading for pleasure for all children that’s why the Lollies Book Awards are so important. The prize is unique in that winners are selected by children themselves, and as such holds up a mirror for what they are looking for in books and what they really want to read. The prize creates a real buzz and many talking points about humour, children and of course literacy.”

Permian Monsters at the Horniman

252 million years ago, in a period called the Permian, life on Earth was dominated by extraordinary creatures. It was a time of fearsome sabre-toothed predators, giant insects and bizarre-looking sharks which ended with a mass extinction that destroyed 90% of all life, paving the way for the Earth’s next great rulers… the dinosaurs. Discover this mysterious time period in Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs, a fascinating, family-friendly exhibition travelling to the UK for the first time. Catch it at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill until 1 November. From Dictodons to Dimetrodons, Ennatosaurus to Eotitanosuchus, the exhibition vividly brings the inhabitants of the Permian period back to life through fossil skeletons, full-size models and animatronics. Visitors can also sift through interactive dig pits, get creative in an art area, and see a collection of artwork offering a glimpse back in time through the eyes of award-winning palaeoartist, Julius Csotonyi. The Horniman will be hosting special activities linked to the exhibition during half term. Adult tickets cost £9, child tickets cost £5, and family tickets, including 4 tickets with up to 2 adults, cost £20. See www.horniman.ac.uk for details. Photo credit: Gondwana Studios

It’s a wonderful, relaxed introduction to practical and theoretical music. With games, quizzes and art activities, all based around music thrown in for good measure, you’ll be amazed how much they can learn whilst having fun. Cheeky Chicks workshops will run on 6, 7, 8 and 9 April from 10am to 2pm and will take place in Herne Hill, Streatham, Sydenham and Sevenoaks. Workshops cost £35 or £30 with a sibling discount. A Confident Start with Jigsaw Performing Arts

As the days grow longer and we hold out hope for the sun to reappear, there is some good news – Jigsaw is now open for booking for the Summer term. Jigsaw’s popular dance, singing and drama weekend classes for 3 to 18-year-olds develop children’s confidence, selfexpression, focus and social skills, while they have fun and make lots of new friends. Parents share in their children’s progress and excitement with regular presentations, shows and reports from Jigsaw’s team of highly experienced teachers. For more information or to book a two-week trial, search for your nearest school on their website, www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk.

As computers permeate every facet of our lives, it is a well-known fact that the digital skills gap has been increasing. In the UK alone, it’s thought that close to a million jobs will remain unfilled in 2020. Computer coding is a key digital life skill, and like spoken languages, the earlier you start, the more competent you will be. Spark4Kids are running all-day holiday workshops that introduce children to computer coding through the medium of games. Courses are available on Minecraft Modding, Roblox Coding, Robotics, Games Design, MicroBit and Arduino coding, Unity/C#, Python, HTML/CSS and JavaScript in a fun, engaging environment. The courses are available for age groups 5-7, 8-12 and 13-16 years. The holiday workshops are taking place in Dulwich from Monday 6 April through to Thursday 9 April. Sydenham High School Encourages People to Change Habits

Eco activism is thriving at Sydenham High School. As a school they are committed to making small changes to make a big difference, not only to their community but also to the planet. Pupils made it clear that environmental issues were at the forefront of their minds and so, having already banned plastic water bottles in 2017 and installing recycling bins, Sydenham started to plan their Eco Strategy. The school have worked on multiple areas to tackle their carbon footprint and impact on the environment through steps such as recycling all food waste, using biodegradable food wrappers, meat-free Mondays, planting new trees, growing vegetables and promoting ‘switch off’ days. Sydenham have not only been awarded the Silver Eco Schools Award, but they are also part of the Sustainable Schools Alliance Network. They even have London’s first UN Climate Change

accredited teacher. This term’s Eco Week will run from Monday 16 March across the whole school with lots of exciting events and activities and a daily focus on food, trees, sustainability, transport and wildlife. The school is asking people to remember that something everyone can do, at school or at home, is change habits. Some great things are happening to build a strong and sustainable future. Pupils are again writing to the Prime Minister regarding what the Government is doing about the climate emergency and suggesting what else they can do. Perhaps you could too? For more information about Sydenham High School, go to www.sydenhamhighschool.gdst.net or why not visit them during one of their spring term open events.

Primary Times spoke to Stephanie Atkinson from Tutor Doctor. She told us, “We had a simple idea and a desire to make a difference. We wondered why parents had to adjust their family’s busy schedules and drive half way across town just to put their child in another classroom with other children… when in fact it was probably the classroom experience that their child was struggling with in the first place. “At Tutor Doctor we offer in home 1-2-1 tutoring. We create a programme that is right for your child and then match a qualified tutor who suits your child’s personality and academic needs. We improve your child’s confidence and organisation skills, to help them be more effective and succeed in education.” Go along and meet some of the guys from Tutor Doctor at Tesco’s in Elmers End Superstore, Croydon Road, Beckenham on 11 April between 9am and 5pm or call Stephanie on 020 8059 6574. Tutor Doctor is running STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths) workshops between 4 and 5pm at Woolwich Library on Monday 30 March and 27 April (continuing on a monthly basis). Workshops will also run at Mycenae House over the Easter holidays on Monday 6, Tuesday 14, and Friday 17 April, from 10.30am-12noon.
