Hi Readers

Welcome to our Spring/Easter magazine. I’m writing this letter to you in lovely sunshine, a blue sky, not too much cloud and not so cold that I have to wear a thick jumper. Long may it continue. Spring has a real positive feel to it, with flowers and tree blossom starting, warmer days breaking through and lots of fun days out to look forward to in the school holidays. Do look through all our hundreds of listings. Some of them are free to enter but all include contact details so do check the events before visiting. We prepare our listings a long time in advance and details do change. Spring is a busy time of the year. Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday is on 22 March. Easter Weekend is 10-13 April. The London Marathon is on Sunday 26 April. Brighton Fringe is from 1-31 May. Then there’s St Patrick’s Day on Tuesday 17 March and St George’s Day on Thursday 23 April. Not forgetting Save the Frogs Day on Saturday 25 April! Don’t forget that the May Day Bank Holiday has changed from Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May to celebrate the 75th VE Day anniversary. Whatever you are celebrating, enjoy the next few weeks. We always have lots of great competitions for you to enter but sometimes we can’t give the prizes out to the actual winner as they haven’t included contact details for themselves. We don’t pass contact details on to any other companies so please do remember to include them with your competition entries. Entries can be sent by post or by email. See our Competitions Page for more details. We’ll be back the week beginning Monday 11 May. Happy Easter!

Christ’s Hospital - a First Class Education since 1552

Junior Zookeeper Day Do you have a passion for animals? Take part in Chessington World of Adventures Resort’s Junior Zookeeper Day. Get a taste for life on the wild side, working alongside one of the resort’s dedicated zookeepers. Get stuck in with some of the zoo’s residents and assist with the daily duties, cleaning and learn all about animal care and welfare. There will even be a few animal encounters thrown in too. On arrival you’ll meet with one of the zookeepers who’ll be your guide for the day as they go about their daily tasks. You’ll get to work in the Children’s Zoo and Wanyama Village, meeting goats, sheep, ferrets, capybaras, meerkats and many more animals. You’ll be given the chance to get your hands dirty as you clean enclosures, with the chance to then encounter some animals in private meet and greets. Participants must be aged between 7 and 16 years old. For more information, visit www.chessington.com.

Christ’s Hospital is committed to providing a first class education to talented boys and girls from a broad social and financial background by offering eligible parents/guardians means-tested financial support with the payment of school fees. Christ’s Hospital (CH) is one of the famous Royal Hospitals of London, whose foundation marked the beginning of the social services in Tudor England. Inspired by a sermon by Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London, King Edward VI instructed the Lord Mayor to appoint a committee of leading citizens to consider remedies and relief for the city’s homeless poor. Their work led to the founding of the five great Hospitals all supporting different needs. CH embraced the task of educating and nourishing the destitute children of the city and took children of all social backgrounds and ages. In November 1552, CH opened its doors to 380 pupils. Within a year, the number had increased to over 500. Many children, including 100 of the first 380, were infants who were sent away to CH Hertford to be looked after. When they reached 10 they returned to CH London. Today the school is located just outside Horsham and has 830 boarding pupils, with an equal number of boys and girls, and 60 day pupils. If you are intrigued and would like to visit, the school encourages you to attend an Open Morning or to call the school for a tour. For more information, visit www.christs-hospital.org.uk or call 01403 246 555.

Self Managed Learning at SML College

SML College prepares young people for the tests of life, not a life of tests. They have been providing Self Managed Learning programmes for young people aged 9-17 in Sussex for 19 years. This vibrant learning community of 40 students offers a real alternative to schooling - students develop the confidence and skills needed for their futures in a stimulating and nurturing environment. Students set their own learning goals and there are no limits to what they can study, or how they should study, and no subjects they have to learn. Whatever they want to learn, a way is found for them to do so. Students are supported by Learning Advisers who help them structure their learning and support them to achieve what they want. Students feel well prepared to take the next steps in their careers when they leave. Results for all abilities have been exceptional as demonstrated by independent research. Please visit www.smlcollege.org.uk for more information.

Every child loves to play make believe, but studies have shown that it’s also vital to normal child development. Through role play, children expand their understanding of themselves and others. Role play also helps them develop language skills and discover leadership ability. By encouraging social interaction and problem solving, it enables children to gain confidence and develop empathy too. At just 18 months, children begin to act out what they’ve seen adults do and throughout early childhood, pretend play helps them make sense of the world and express emotion. As we are increasingly drawn to technology for entertainment, role play provides a much needed opportunity for children to explore their imaginations and develop crucial skills. Little Street play centres encourage children from 1 – 7 years old to investigate, explore and experiment in a little world for big imaginations. High quality, clean and safe, Little Street centres enable parents to engage with their children in play, fostering a sense of connectedness. Many parents and carers say that they enjoy playing at Little Street as much as their child! The centres also provide an ideal opportunity for childminders to carry out observations and for home educators, nurseries and schools to incorporate a trip that’s both great fun and linked to the EYFS. Visit www.little-street.co.uk for more information about your local centres in Chichester and Horsham.

Make a Splash with a Free Swim

Keeping the kids active doesn’t have to be a chore. This spring, Places Leisure are offering a free swim at one of their three swimming pools in the Horsham District. It’s great for their health, a break from screen time, socially interactive and fun. Your free swim voucher entitles you to one free junior ticket for a Just Swim session at The Pavilions in the Park, Billinghurst Leisure Centre or Steyning Leisure Centre. Session times can be found on the centre’s websites, all you have to do is google them. Why not make a day of it?
