Sister duo brews hospitality success in local community Katrina Lazari and Suellen Russell

outh-side sisters Katrina Lazari and Suellen Russell are set to celebrate the first birthday of The Coffee Club Meadowbrook next month, their second successful store. The duo purchased the franchise in February 2015 and applied their own recipe for success focused on customer loyalty after building a strong follower base at their first store, The Coffee Club Logan Megacentre. Katrina, who was studying a Bachelor of Nursing, and Suellen, who was working in IT with the Queensland Government, opened their first The Coffee Club in 2007 with little expectation of what was to come. “Our parents, who own four The Coffee Club stores in this area, inspired us to take a risk and purchase The Coffee Club Logan Megacentre store,” Mrs Lazari said. “It was easily the best decision we’ve ever made! We love being so involved in the local community and are so grateful for the support since day one, which now spans across our two stores. “Even though we are a nationallyrecognised name, we always try to stay loyal to the local community and reward our regular customers who have since become our friends.” Mrs Lazari said that her sister and her employ 28 staff across the two stores, all of which were chosen for their friendly

personalities and genuine interest in their customers. “We like to show our customers how much we value them, and have often made our regulars’ coffee before they have even ordered,” Mrs Lazari said. “In addition, we love hearing their stories and providing them with quality coffee and food – which is guaranteed through The Coffee Club’s extensive Learning and Development Program. “Just over a year ago The Coffee Club launched a new, award-winning L&D Program that enables staff to receive nationallyrecognised qualifications in hospitality by working in store, as well as ensuring regular and consistent training both in-person and via online modules.” In addition, Mrs Lazari and Mrs Russell have taken out awards specific to their stores – including the Albert & Logan Business Achievers Awards “New Business of the Year” Award in 2007, and the Business Achievers Award in the Casual Dining category in 2011. Achieving goals How are your resolutions going? ave your New Year resolutions already faded into good intentions and wishful thinking? Many of us find that by February our determination to lose weight, get fitter or achieve other goals can start waning as we see little progress. Old habits seem hard to break. There are some in society who seem to be successful in keeping motivated and on track with their goals. Think of our very successful Olympic swimming team. But are they really so different to the rest of us? It seems the first step to doing things differently this year is to start with how you actually set your goals.

Write S.M.A.R.T. goals

One of the missing pieces to successful achievement is in the details and goal setting. When asked what he attributes his successes to Australian Swimming Commonwealth and Olympic medallist Josh Watson replied, “The difference between working with or without goals equals results.” Writing down your goals has been proven to significantly increase your success according to the famous Harvard Written Goal Study of 1979. The question that was asked of new graduates was “Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?” They found that 84% had no goals at all, 13% had goals but not written and 3% had clear, written goals and specific plans. In 1989, the same graduates were interviewed and the results showed that the 13% who had goals were earning twice as much as the 84% who had no goals at all. Even more staggering, the 3% who had clear, written goals were earning ten times as much as the other 97% put together. There is a formula for writing goals that has been used successfully in business. George T Doran’s S.M.A.R.T. goals is a great tool to provide a very detailed roadmap of your personal goals as well. S.M.A.R.T. goals are clear, specific and measurable, so that they can show positive or negative progress. Next they are achievable, that is, reachable. The old adage is “You can climb Mt Everest … one step at a time.” Your goals must be relevant to you, meaning they are consistent with your reason, vision and core values. Finally, you need to set a realistic date or time period to drive action. Now you have some clear goals and focus, how to keep motivated?

decide they really want it. If they want it then you can help them,” says Laurie. He explains that you must take ownership of your goals by putting some emotion into it. “It’s gotta hurt if you don’t get it,” says Laurie How do you get motivated or excited about your goals? A powerful technique that elite athletes use is visualisation. Take a moment every day to read your goals then use all your senses to picture how you would feel when you have finally achieved them. How would it impact your life? This energy and emotion is what you want to capture to motivate you to overcome the hard stuff and take action. Once motivated, the next step is to be committed to take action regularly.  Page 8

Motivation and visualisation

People often associate high emotion, passion and drive with the word ‘motivation’. One person who embodies this is Laurie Lawrence, Motivator Speaker, Olympic and World Champion Swim Coach and Australian Rugby Union Representative. You may not get as excited as he does, but to be successful you certainly need to be emotionally invested in your goals. “Motivation really is an internal thing. You can’t make people do anything, so they have to

love dressing during the day in an outfit I know can take me through into the evening, especially for those times I know I’ve got a tight schedule to get from work to an evening outing – be it date night (like Valentine’s Day!) or movie with the girlfriends. What are my best tips to go from day to night? No matter what outfit, start with some beautiful underwear. Don’t skimp on the first layer. Sometimes this is what makes you feel the most beautiful and ready for a night out. I love some of the designs at SJ Lingerie – made in Australia and absolutely stunning designs. A pencil skirt is one style you can easily pull off and look amazing in, no matter what your shape is. It is definitely a must-have.The type of top you would choose would depend on your silhouette and the length of the skirt.

To go into eveningwear I love to pick sparkly skirt or one with lots of bright colours, to really make it a bit of a feature. To remain business classic during the day, match back with a crisp white collared top. Then to take it to date night make sure you pack in your handbag a massive bling necklace, big cocktail ring and swap your ballet flats for some height.

Hughe www.ninewest.com.au

For a final touch, add some red hot lipstick, and if you have time in the morning pop a quick coat of red on your nails. TIP: If your skirt is quite plain, you can go for a coloured top. The last thing to do is put your shoulders back and own your look. Beauty comes from the inside. Enjoy the month, Ladies!

Now or never for Jill A love of colour and fabrics leads to new sewing and quilting hub in Springwood

Spotlight

on Fashion Editor

Quirky Quilts Qld is Jill Holme’s new venture at Arndale Shopping Centre, Springwood. Jill loves quilting. She’s being doing it for eight years and worked for four in a quilting shop. It was only natural that the idea of opening her own store started percolating as Jill loves being surrounded by stimulating patterns and colours all day. “I realise I am visual and just love being around fabrics,” says Jill. With her children grown, Jill had a window of opportunity to start her own store. “Sometimes life throws you an unexpected opportunity.

Carly Vidal-Wallace 35 Fashion Designer • Speaker • Businesswoman

Tell us a bit about yourself? I have grown up in a world of textiles; our family business dating back 30 years is in fabrics and manufacturing. I’ve always loved to sew and design with my mother being a seamstress and being proficient in freehand pattern cutting. It’s just something I have grown up with. When did you really start to love fashion and writing? Probably while I was living in Paris where I met and married my husband. I loved seeing all the amazing designs in fashion week. It’s also the time I started writing more about my French experience; but I realised I had a love of both.

Owning my own shop was always in the back of my mind, and when the opportunity arose it was grab it now or miss it,” says Jill.

Quality fabrics and social and learning hub The Specialty Fabrics Store stocks all types of unique fabrics, cottons, quilting patterns and haberdashery and is a social and learning hub. A range of classes are on offer for those interested in learning or improving their sewing, crocheting and quilting skills. Scrapbooking is also on the menu.

“A lot of young girls want to make their own clothes and have an interest in their own designs. Our dressmaking teacher can help them adapt a pattern to suit them. Our Help Me Sew Class is for those who have forgotten how to sew, are stuck or need to know how to work that new sewing machine,” says Jill. There’s even a Mums ‘n Bubs group. The stunning quilt of a map of Australia, designed and created by Jill during a trip around Australia, is a testament that this lady is passionate about her craft and a role model for women to follow their dreams.

that there are other brands that exist apart from what you find in the big centres.

What do you enjoy most about writing at South City Bulletin? It’s an exciting time for fashion in Australia; I am passionate about featuring local designers as well as the big brands. Being a designer myself I know how hard it can be to break into the market, and I find it really rewarding showing readers

What’s next for you? 2016 has a lot of fashion events I’m involved with, along with a trip to France and LA. I’m excited to share it all with the South City Bulletin readers!

Retirement living with Chiou See Anderson

The grey elephant in the room ustralia is a relatively affluent country, with easy accessibility to energy dense food. This combined with increased automation of daily tasks and sedentary occupations have contributed to the worrying statistic of 63% of Australian adults being overweight or obese. So, do you fall into this category? First, let’s determine your Body Mass Index (BMI).

A

Weight (in kg)

BMI = Height (in metres) x Height (in metres) BMI

Classification

Less than 18.5

Underweight

Obese

Statistically, there is a 63% chance that you belong to this cohort who are more prone to cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and joint discomfort. To address

this disturbing trend, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has set up a task force to formulate ways to improve diet/nutrition, increase exercise and enable behavioural change. It seems ludicrous that tax dollars need to be expended to drum common sense into the populace. The simple act of eating better (and less), exercising more and understanding our bodies should not become a national crisis and yet it is. So why have we fallen into such a predicament? Whilst researching for this article, I found the “Physical Activity Guidelines for Older Adults” provided by Health Direct Australia. They recommend the following for adults over the age of 65 who are generally fit and have no health conditions: 1. At least 150 minutes of fast walking every week or at least 75 minutes of vigorousintensity aerobic activity (running, tennis, uphill cycling) PLUS 2. At least 2 or more days a week on musclestrengthening activities that work ALL major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms).

I was initially stumped by this guideline. The suggested amount of physical activity seems onerous. The possibility of injury when fast walking, running and uphill cycling seems imminent. Yet, we know we need to start somewhere with a simple programme. So let us break this down a little. 1. Go to your local gym. At Springwood, North Logan Aquatic and Fitness Centre is owned and operated by Logan City Council. The programmes are affordable and their trainers are Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP). 2. Gather a group of friends and share a Personal Trainer. You will be surprised by the encouragement and support you receive in a private group and it can cost as little as $10 per person. That is the cost of a coffee and carrot cake combo!! 3. Attend once a week and ask the PT to write up a list of suggested strengthening exercises

that you can do at home between the weekly class. 4. Get a walking buddy and wear a gadget that counts the number of steps you take during this exercise routine. Note the time taken. Divide the number of steps over the number of minutes. The aim of the game is to get to achieve the minimum 150 minutes per week and the higher the number that you calculated above, the faster you are walking; hence, increased aerobic intensity. Exercise, like learning and eating well, should be a lifelong habit; it is never too late to start.

Commitment to good habits

Commitment is not a wavering emotion but the non-negotiable mindset that comes from a subconscious habit. Do you question or even think about cleaning your teeth at night? No, because you have repeated this behaviour enough times to create a positive habit.

Aristotle told us “We are what we repeatedly do. While Aristotle may have it right about the importance of repeating a behaviour to create a habit, modern research also indicates that you must believe you can change. “You do need the capacity to believe that things will get better, says J Scott Tonigan, Research Professor, Department of Psychology, University of New Mexico.

Inspiration can come from a role model or the support of a group or community. Laurie Lawrence reiterates the need for most of us to have someone like a coach to keep us accountable and on track. “You’ve got someone there pointing you in the right direction, saying, ‘Good job, you’ve done this well.’ It’s very hard to do things on your own. There are some individuals that are so steely minded and so single minded that they can do it. I believe those are few and far between, says Laurie. Understanding the process of creating habits is critical. According to Charles Duhigg in his book The Power of the Habit, a habit is a 3-step process within our brains. “First, there is a cue, a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and which habit to use. Then there is the routine, which can be physical, mental or emotional. Finally, there is a reward, which helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future.

Cue + Routine + Reward = Habit

For example, if you want to start running, the cue would be leaving your running gear beside your bed. The routine would be running

first thing in the morning before your day starts, and the reward that reinforces your discipline could be physically feeling the endorphins, the sense of accomplishment from actually achieving a goal, or a small treat – not necessarily food. A great way to change an old habit is to keep the same cue and same reward but modify the routine: If you want to give up coffee, swap it for herbal tea. As Duhigg tells us, “Once you understand that habits can change, you have the freedom and the responsibility to remake them. Once you understand that habits can be rebuilt, the power of habit becomes easier to grasp, and the only option left is to get to work. So with the right direction provided by S.M.A.R.T goals, emotive motivation and commitment via your habits, you will be unstoppable to successfully achieve those resolutions!

including pimples! Avoid anything that will block skin pores such as products that are not water soluble. Stop smoking and drink less alcohol. These habits add to the ageing process and will sabotage the work of your skin care routine.

SKIN HEALTH with Claire Mason

Actively achieving healthy skin Our skin is our body’s biggest living organ, our front line of defence and the first impression we present to others. So make sure one of your goals for the coming year includes skin health. Here are a few simple ways to achieve healthy skin this year. 1. Know your skin type Often people get their skin type wrong. They buy unsuitable products, leading to disappointment and skin problems. Seek a professional skin consultation and gain more confidence by making more educated decisions about your skin. Ask questions about recommended products and investigate if what you’re currently using is appropriate. 2. Moisturise Every skin type needs moisture to prevent it from drying out and becoming vulnerable to exposure from outside hazards. Apply a premium moisturiser daily after cleansing, as well as a sunscreen with at least 30+ UV protection. For acne or oily skin, go with an oil-free moisturiser that won’t block your pores. 3. Avoid bad habits Picking damages your skin. So don’t do it,

4. Make healthy choices Your skin is among the victims of unhealthy eating patterns. Make sure you’re eating good amounts daily of fruit and vegetables, stay hydrated, and avoid deep-fried foods, harmful fats and cholesterol-inducing foods. A minimum of seven hours’ sleep is required to guarantee your body time to recover and rebuild skin cells. Finally, exercise a minimum of 2–3 times a week: active body, active mind. Follow these tips, stay on track and you will fulfil your goals with confidence.

more common in those who smoke heavily. What can trigger cluster headaches? - Alcohol can often trigger within 1 hour of drinking, and we would advise to avoid drinking during a cluster period. - Strong smells such as perfume, petrol, paint or bleach - Exercise or becoming over heated - Smoking

Suffering from cluster headaches? Cluster headache sufferers know all too well how excruciating this pain is. This type of headache is the most painful headache you can experience, and is even more debilitating than migraines. It is commonly known as suicide headache, as many sufferers contemplate ending their lives due to the extreme level of pain.

Treatment Oxygen therapy along with medication can help reduce the severity of pain. We recommend you discuss your symptoms with our headache clinicians at the Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic before you undergo oxygen therapy or long-term use of medication.

What is cluster headache? A cluster headache is a rare type of headache affecting 1 to 2 people in every 1000. The pain is of extreme level and usually reaches its full intensity within 5 to 10 minutes and lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. It may occur every other day, or up to 8 times per day during a bad cluster.

Where is the pain? Pain is usually felt in one eye, as if a hot iron pick pierces through the eye. The eyelid can become swollen and droopy. The same eye can become red and watery. The nose can also become blocked or runny on the side of pain. Who can get a cluster headache? It is more common in men than women by about 5 to 6 times. It can start at any age, but commonly starts in the 20s or older. It is also

Bodhi Chan Centre A contemporary meditation centre set amongst the gum trees offers peace, health and wholeness on the Southside t the far eastern end of Dennis Road, Springwood I recently discovered a 20 acre sanctuary for the mind, body and spirit. The drive along the long, winding dirt driveway to The Bodhi Chan Meditation Centre, set amongst tall native gums, immediately relaxed me, as did the welcoming smiles of Venerable Hui Chyan, centre Abbot, and his assistant Catherine. Catherine gladly took me on a tour of the property, which revealed an inspiring landscape dotted with meeting circles and gardens lovingly created to blend in with the natural landscape. The main building has meetings rooms and bedrooms

for guests and residents. A huge industrial shed is the communal kitchen and dining area where vegetarian meals, often including fresh vegetables and herbs from the garden, are offered to visitors.

Non-sectarian approach to finding inner peace The centre offers training and practice in meditation, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Zen. Over a cuppa Ven. Hui Chyan (a.k.a. ‘Ozmonk’), who is resident teacher and a Buddhist monk of 15 years’ experience, explained that while Bodhi Chan’s

work is solidly grounded in the classical wisdom of Ch’an Buddhism, it adopts a non-sectarian perspective in its programs. “People of all faiths can come to meditate here and we hope it will help them on their particular journey of faith,” said Ven. Hui Chyan. When asked his view on solving world conflict, Ven. Hui Chyan smiled and explained that peace first begins within. “As you gain inner peace, kindness and compassion through meditation, you project that energy out to the people, families and society around you. If you find a place of refuge within you, for example through meditation, you can take that with you wherever you go,” said Ven. Hui Chyan. He explained further that meditation, Tai Chi and Chi Gong all have great benefits for mental and physical wellbeing and strongly recommends meditation always be preceded by the physical practices to get the blood circulating,

Classes and retreats

The new term for Saturday Tai Chi, Meditation and Basic Buddhism classes begins on March 19. A 1-day and 3-day retreat will be held between 4th and 6th March for those who wish to further their search for inner peace, wisdom, compassion and loving kindness. Three more retreats are planned for later in the year. Contact Bodhi Meditation Centre on (07) 3808 5661 or 0469 858 163 info@bodhichan.com • www.bodhichan.weebly.com

HOLIDAY ESCAPES with Wayne Budge

Amazing Arizona The western states of the USA have some remarkable small out-of-the way towns that hardly anyone has heard of. Once you visit, though, you will never forget them.

a tonne of money and drive. Surprisingly, you will have a much better view of the canyon and you can spend as much time as you want exploring the area. The town of Tusayan at the entrance to the Grand Canyon National Park has some great hotel accommodation such as the Holiday Inn Express and Suites or the Best Western Premier Grand Canyon Squire Inn. It may be an idea to stay here a night or two if you have the time to explore the canyon a little more.

Sedona

Old Route 66

Hit the road for some unforgettable gems Sedona

Near Flagstaff in Arizona lies the small desert town of Sedona. Sedona is about a fourand-a-half hour drive south-east of Las Vegas. This visually stunning town is surrounded by rocky buttes, pine forests and pristine creeks and was once home to the Sinagua and Apache Indians. Genuine arrowheads can still be found along the streams where Native Americans once camped. Sedona is a place where they say spiritual vortexes are felt – and the shopping vortexes! The shopping precinct is very much influenced by the Native American culture, particularly the Navajo and Hopi Indians. Quality Native American art and jewellery are abundant along the main street and off the main drag at the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village. Don’t forget your wallets and purses if that is your poison.

Travelling through Arizona you can’t help but hit parts of the historic road of Route 66. Route The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon

A leisurely two-hour drive north from Sedona is the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, The Grand Canyon was formed over millions of years by the Colorado River cutting through the layers of rock of the Colorado Plateau. It is a sight to behold and a “must” on your bucket list. But don’t be tempted to visit by helicopter. Save

Old Route 66

66 begins in Chicago and winds its way through the mid-USA and ends up on the west coast of California at Santa Monica. Take a detour from Kingman onto Historic Route 66 and you will find the small towns of Hackberry and Seligman. All that is left in Hackberry is a General Store and Seligman has not much more. One lady I spoke to that has lived in Arizona has never even heard of these towns. They are amazing small towns and definitely worth the detour if you are in the area. There are so many places in Arizona that I could write a book about, such as visiting the place made famous by the Eagles’ song Take It Easy where you can actually be “standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona”. Or visiting the world’s best preserved meteor crater. here are few words that will halt you in your steps faster than “Mum, I need to go to the toilet”. Upon hearing them, mothers the world over know they must stop what they are doing and get that child to a toilet – immediately. The alternative doesn’t bear thinking about, and we all know that little children are not experts in “holding on” for very

T

long. Usually, by the time they tell you they need to go, they really really need to go. So there is no time to spare. The trouble is, and as Murphy’s Law would have it, these words are seldom declared when there is a toilet anywhere close by… Recently, I accompanied my daughter on a class trip to the Brisbane bayside. Our trip included a walk out to a small island that is accessible only when the tide goes out. The children’s excitement levels were off the Richter scale. Children played in the sand and the adults breathed in the natural beauty of our surrounds. It was then, amidst all this tranquillity, that my daughter turned to me and said those immortal words, “Mum, I need to go to the toilet – really bad.” I took a deep breath. We were in a bit of a pickle, to say the least. You see, this “island”, as I have been calling it, was really little more than a barren mass of sand with small clumps of

vegetation scattered here and there. It was not inhabited, and it certainly did not boast any amenities. The walk back was long and winding. I looked hurriedly around, hoping to glimpse some kind of hitherto unnoticed shrub that would provide a little bit of privacy. There was nothing. I could tell from the tone of my daughter’s voice, and from her demeanour, that the situation was becoming urgent. The question was, how could a six-year-old girl pass urine on a small sandy island bereft of plant life exceeding ten centimetres in height, unnoticed by 60 classmates? A plan started to brew in my mind. But I was going to need the help of another adult. I recruited two nearby mums and briefed them on the situation. After a brief discussion our plan was hatched: we would move as far away from the group as possible, and squat to form a small protective circle around my daughter so that she could do her business. We moved quickly. There was no time to spare. As we had discussed, we all dropped on the count of three. I reassured my daughter that no one was watching and no one was coming. She relaxed enough to go to the toilet then and there, and within 15 seconds it was all over. We breathed a sigh of relief. Disaster averted. I glanced around. No one was even looking. The other parents and children were so engrossed with building sandcastles and digging large holes in the sand that no one had even looked up. Walking back to the group I noticed one child squatting in a rather deep hole he had dug. “Do you want to climb in?” he asked my daughter. Now why hadn’t I thought of that?

EDUCATION SKILLS & TRAINING with Amanda Sheehan

Separation anxiety What to do when it’s hard to say good-bye lthough my son enjoyed kindergarten, what he didn’t love was saying good-bye to me in the mornings. There were many tears and I came to dread the morning dropoffs. Separation anxiety can be a difficult experience for children and their parents, and as a new school year starts, many parents will be dealing with this problem. The condition is more common in children aged under two, but some will carry separation anxiety through to their early school years.

A

Here are some helpful tips for dealing with separation anxiety, from one who has been there. • Say good-bye to your child quickly and leave. It may seem harsh, but teachers report that the worst thing a parent can do is linger over their good-byes. In most cases the child calms down within a few minutes of the parent leaving and happily settles into their activities. My son’s kindergarten teacher would often give me a quick phone call after I had left to say that he was completely fine, had a big smile on his face and was enjoying his day. And the first thing he would say to me in the afternoons when I picked him up was, “I had a great time at kindy today, Mum.” • Stay relaxed and happy when you say good-bye. Try not to appear stressed or upset to your child as this will only exacerbate the problem.

• Settle your child into a fun activity before you go. This helps to take their mind off your pending departure. • Work with your child’s teacher. A friend’s daughter had significant separation issues when she started year one. Every morning her daughter would scream and refuse to let go of her mother when it was time to say good-bye, causing great distress for their entire family. My friend found that working with her daughter’s teacher to overcome the problem was vital. “Her teacher had the great idea that she should bring in a different joke to share with the class every morning. It may seem simple but it did the trick. My daughter looked forward to that every day and it gave her something positive to focus on, and whilst she gets upset occasionally, most days are now a success”. In the mornings, my son’s kindy teacher would kindly take him by the hand and talk him through all the fun activities they were going to do that day. She also suggested he take his favourite teddy with him and place him near his sheet bag where they would reconnect at nap time. • Read empowering stories together. Consider reading stories together about children who find separation difficult. If you can’t find any, make them up.

Finally, take heart. Whilst unpleasant, separation anxiety is a phase that will pass in time.

FAMILY with Sam Lee

Fire safety Plan to keep your family and home fire safe

risbane has experienced a large number of severe home fires in the last few years, with precious lives and homes lost. Make sure your whole family knows fire precaution rules and what to do if there is a fire.

B

• Have a well-rehearsed fire escape plan that has been practiced by every member of the family. Most fires will occur during the peak hours of 10 pm at night to 6 am in the morning when we are less aware and our senses are down. So practising the drill at night will make sure all members of a household are prepared. • Educate children on the difference between tools and toys and the danger of playing with matches and lighters, which have been a major cause of house fires and fatalities. Store all matches and lighters out of reach of children. • Never leave cooking, heaters, open fires or candles unattended. • Don’t overload power boards.

14

• Keep electrical appliances in good working order.

Install photoelectric smoke alarms

• Ensure cigarette ash and butts are extinguished. Never smoke in bed.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services recommend all homes are fitted with working photoelectric smoke alarms because they: give earlier warnings for smouldering fires, the most common types of domestic fires; provide the best detection across a range of fires; are less likely to emit nuisance or false alarms; and do not contain radioactive material.

Louie Naumovski, founder of The Logan House Fire Support Network, says it’s important to make sure all homes have proper fire safety precautions in place. “A major cause of house fires are out of date smoke alarms, so we urge you to check your alarms and remember that all smoke alarms have to be replaced every 10 years regardless of brand or battery,” says Louie.

• Do not dry clothing in front of heaters.

Safehome Program: Safehome is a free service offered by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services where firefighters inspect your home to ensure there are no fire hazards and the right fire safety precautions are in place.

• Never deadlock yourself inside the house.

Email: admin@lhfsn.com

Ph: 13 QGOV (13 74 68)

• Install a photoelectric smoke alarm

www.lhfsn.com

Visit www.fire.qld.gov.au

• Clean lint filters in clothes dryers after every use and always let dryers complete the cooldown cycle. • Keep a fire extinguisher and fire blanket and know how to use them.

The Logan House Fire Support Network provides support to Brisbane families who have been devastated by house fire.
