CHRISTMAS SALE NOW ON!
Continuing to do the things we love. At any age we may need a help to make everyday tasks a little easier, writes Wendy Johnson.
T
he showroom at LifeTec looks like a department store but nothing here is for sale. This is the ultimate try before you buy emporium. From simple aids for turning on a tap to the latest technology for home automation this is the place to come for free specialist information from health and technology professionals all aimed at maximising your safety and independence. It’s not just for the elderly or disabled that LifeTec provides information and assistance. Any one of us could have need of their services if we have an accident or injury and our home environment our workplace or school cannot support our changed needs. LifeTec works directly with members of the community to solve individual problems of mobility, communication and independence. The products, devices and systems that LifeTec showcases are all described as assistive technology and they provide people with practical solutions to everyday activities. From opening a jar to using an assisted communication device LifeTec has the information and health professionals to advise users on the products that
will enable them to participate in work or school, socialise, or simply live independently and get more out of life.
Smart Home display
With thousands of products on show some of the most innovative ideas are to be found in the Ambient Living Display centres. Kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living areas as well as offices can pose many difficulties for the disabled. The smart home displays allows users to access and experience how both high and low level assistive technologies can be used in everyday life. This may be as simple as non-slip flooring or the correct dimensions for a wheelchair’s turning circle, to beds that raise or lower on demand. The kitchen is said to be the most important room in the home but can also be the most dangerous. The smart home display kitchen provides opportunities for visitors to test a range of assistive technologies in a realistic environment. An easy pull power point plug would be handy for arthritic fingers and talking kitchen scales and measuring jugs will certainly make life a little easier for the sight impaired. Being home alone can be a great mark of our
independence but can be worrisome for family. If we fall ill we may not have the capacity to dial 000. The smart home features an impressive range of devices to provide assistance in an emergency such as a telephone based emergency call system designed to enable people who are at home alone to call for assistance when needed.
Consultations
The displays are supported by a number of health professionals experienced in occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech pathology. They are available to advise clients on products and train users in the correct way to use the devices as well as provide assessments on mobility and home and safety modifications. The consultants can provide the correct information and advice on assistive technology to meet your needs and show you how to improve your quality of life and maintain your independence.

Beenleigh Theatre Group

Going for the Gongs!
n a recent announcement by the Gold Coast Area Theatre Awards (also known as ‘The Palmies’), Beenleigh Theatre Group received an amazing 15 nominations. “This is a fantastic result and a fitting reward for the innovation, dedication and skill our theatre family have shown this year,” BTG Vice President Rachel Hunt says. “It proves that our policies of inclusivity – we welcome everyone who comes through our door and our willingness to tackle anything – we have staged two brand new Australian scripts this year, which have been a wonderful success. Huge congratulations to everyone at BTG, I am extremely proud to be part of such a wonderful community group.”
2013 highlights
One highlight of Beenleigh Theatre Group’s 2013 season was producing a world premiere musical, Billy Buckett – A Rock ‘n’ Roll Love Story. This production impressed the Golden Palm judges to the point that it is up for ten of BTG’s 15 nominations including ‘Outstanding Community Theatre Production’.
Billy Buckett’s writers, Jay Turner and Cath Mundy of Waterford, were on hand throughout the entire production process to ensure that the passion and vision they had for the show came to fruition. “To have Billy Buckett nominated for ten categories is an indicator of the high quality of input from the entire cast, crew, and production team,” Jay Turner says. “Theatre-making takes months of hard work and planning by so many people; it’s a team sport. Everyone involved has a share in the success of these nominations.” Also nominated for gongs at the Gold Coast Area Theatre Awards are two more of Beenleigh Theatre Group’s 2013 productions, Eurobeat and Oliver (Beenleigh Theatre Group’s 25th Anniversary show).

Harnessing the Sun Solar friendly solutions
Solar power on the go Deen from Access Antennas says, “We offer portable solar panels to attach to caravans so people who travel all over the country never have to worry about issues like generators running out or not being able to connect to electricity.” He says the benefits of solar are endless and being able to just unfold the panel and start using the sun’s power is so beneficial.
With the mantra of think global, act local, solar energy is fast becoming our energy of choice from calculators to cars and now solar power in our homes as solar panels gather the power of the sun for electricity and hot water, writes Sam Lee.
T
here are many benefits to using solar power in our homes as opposed to the more traditional coal-fired alternative. While there is an initial start-up fee to have the panels installed the sun will then be harnessed to run your house’s energy needs. Another benefit is the lack of pollution from solar panels and the benefit of being able to use solar power anywhere, even in remote areas where previously electricity could not be connected.
Installation
Solar panels need to be installed on the roof to gain the most amount of exposure to the sun as possible over the course of a day. This can then be used to fuel electricity, hot water, heated swimming pools, lighting. Once installed you can expect to see a drop in power bills and depending on the size of your solar system and how much electricity is being gathered and used you may actually see power being returned to the power grid. Solar power is the way of the future and while we have the opportunities to gain from its benefits it’s important we take action and begin to harness the power of the sun. In the not too distant future our cars will be run on solar and with our cities also jumping on the bandwagon
“It’s important for those travelling to be prepared on their journeys and a good choice is solar,” Deen says. “What better way to provide energy to your caravan than simply connecting the foldable solar panel?” of environmental protection installing solar is more important than ever. Of course, there are some conditions to using solar power. Cloudy weather will mean it’s less effective along with the fact it won’t gain any power at night. Luckily Queensland weather is perfectly suited to getting the best out of solar energy and harnessing the power of the sun. If the research suggesting that our climate is suffering due to our carbon footprint then solar is a sure way to not only reduce your personal

carbon footprint but is also a free resource. Solar power does not emit greenhouse gases and therefore is actively making our climate better. Since our demand for fossil fuels exceeds supply if everyone accesses their right to use the sun as a source of power we can work toward reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.

BUSINESS with Tina Litte
Christmas The business year seems to have flown by yet again and before we know it Christmas is here. We work through the year with our heads down and barely have time for a friendly chat to our clients, let alone extending a thank you. So, this is the ideal time of year to reflect on the year just past and to remember those who have supported our business over the year. The Christmas season presents a great opportunity for us to cement our business relationships and increase the loyalty of our major clients toward our business. Make it about showing appreciation, rather than giving a Christmas gift just because it is Christmas.
A GREAT TIME TO SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION Business gift ideas
A simple thank you
We Send Anything, Anywhere! For Anybody! Business & Private Domestic & International Air, Road & Sea freight We package for you We can come & pick up your items
Expressing thanks to clients is an easy thing to do, but it is something that is often not conveyed, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. This simple gesture will give your business lots of points and you will be remembered by your customers in the year to come. Think about how you feel when you receive a thank you, whether it’s verbally, a card or a gift. Make a list of your clients, particularly the ones that have helped your business thrive. You could put them in order of how much they have helped you or how much they have spent with you and decide on a budget accordingly. Write a message in a card thanking them for the business they have given you in the past year and stating that you appreciate their business. If you are too busy to get out and go shopping for gifts, there are plenty of online solutions available, and florist and gift stores that offer delivery as well. Remember your local small businesses and help to support them at the same time. Or better still, you could hire a virtual assistant to complete this task for you!

The statistics of hunger are not pretty. While supermarket catalogues are bursting with ideas for the Christmas Day feast, many in our community struggle to put food on the table on a daily basis, writes Wendy Johnson.
I
n combined humanitarian efforts three points intersect to provide food for the one in ten Queenslanders experiencing ongoing food insecurity. Food companies and suppliers, along with the Foodbank warehouse and welfare agency distributors all play their part, working in unison to ensure food and personal items get to those in need. And it’s not only the homeless who are hungry; the aged, single parents and increasingly, the working poor are presenting at welfare agencies to top up their shopping baskets.
Logan has its fair share of low-income families, the hidden poor, who struggle with unemployment or the uncertainty of casual work. Statistics from the Foodbank website point to the fact that more than half a million Queenslanders live below the poverty line, and that: • 25% of households in disadvantage areas around Brisbane are food insecure; • One in four pensioners and around 12% of children lives in or close to poverty; and • 90% of welfare agencies don’t have enough food to meet demand.

How did we get to this situation despite years of economic growth? With growth comes inevitable price rises in the basics: food, health, education, housing, electricity and transport. It seems that the only essential that can be compromised is food and people are increasingly turning to their local charities seeking support. However, statistics also indicate that charities have to turn away on average 134 people per month of which 72 are children.
2
Feeding the hungry
More than 60 Logan welfare organisations like Centro Care at Beenleigh, Twin Rivers at Eagleby, Loaves & Fishes of Kingston and Rosies are regulars at Foodbank along with the YMCA who provide breakfast at 40 schools in Logan. For charities to offer food regularly they need access to a reliable supply of fresh foodstuffs at little or no charge. Food hampers, food co-ops, community pantries, and fill-a-bag days all form part of the system that local welfare groups use as their model to supply food to the community. Logan welfare group Tribe of Judah at Kingston is famous for its Christmas food give-aways and this year is no exception. Pastor Terry Walker expects the crowds lined up to exceed last year’s 3000 line up that was estimated to feed more than 7000 people and provide toys to slip under empty Christmas trees. “It’s got real big, and since we went to air on TV it’s increased a lot,” Terry says. “The government doesn’t think so but I say to them come down and have a look. We will have around 120 volunteers for the give-away the week before Christmas. We’ve estimated about 8000 people will turn up this year and we estimate it will be $200 worth of food per person. We ask them to bring their own bags and this year trolleys are allowed, there’s no

means test, the food is completely free of charge.” The monster food give-away is not solely a Christmas event. Tribe of Judah has a giveaway food program daily from 8.30am Monday to Saturday where 10-15 volunteers help more than 1000 people each week come to fill their shopping bags with fresh produce and non-perishables. While picking up their groceries the shoppers can also have a $2.00 breakfast, part of the

welfare group’s social enterprise program which also includes supplying cooked meals for Ronald McDonald House at Herston. Tribe of Judah has been associated with Foodbank since 1994. “Foodbank is one of our main suppliers,” Terry says. “We go there on a daily basis and collect anything up to 24 pallets of different foods, things like fruit and vegies and canned foods.” uu Page 10

The supply chain in action
Starting 17 years ago in Fortitude Valley feeding the homeless, Foodbank is now the largest hunger relief organisation in Queensland. Last year Foodbank provided enough food for more than 13 million meals and the food rescued by Foodbank feeds on average 88,000 people a day through well-known organisations such as the Salvation Army, Vinnies and Meals on Wheels. General Manager of Foodbank, Ken McMillan says that the non-profit organisation relies on a network of food manufacturers, growers, supermarkets, farmers, and individuals to donate surplus goods that would have gone to landfill. “Half of the food here is produce,” Ken says. “Farmers might have oranges or apples too small or too large, or carrots with a blemish that don’t meet the strict consumer guidelines in place in supermarkets but are still perfectly good to eat. Ken says that as much as 30% of all food produced is unsaleable and that vast quantities
of dairy foods such as milk and yoghurt which, although may for example, have a six-day use-by date, is too soon for the major supermarkets to put on their fridge shelves. “We wouldn’t provide anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves,” he says. Prior to legislation changes, surplus produce would have been destined to be dumped as there was no capacity for indemnity from any adverse effects from the foodstuffs. Common sense prevailed and food and personal items are now collected by Foodbank and redistributed to welfare agencies from as far afield as Charleville and Coffs Harbour. Over 2,500 charities and 640 schools collect the donated food and distribute it to adults and children in need. With 14 staff and 60 volunteers Foodbank works through 300 registered charities and welfare groups. Ken encourages a grass roots response and for members of the community to volunteer at their local charity to help pack hampers, fill shelves or cook meals.

Donations & food drives
YMCA Breakfast Co-ordinator Catherine Hannell and Volunteer Sandra
If volunteering at the local welfare agency isn’t an option, then food drives are a popular way for individuals and the community to become involved in supporting Foodbank. Schools, clubs, organisations, companies, neighbourhoods and families can help supply non-perishable items that are always needed by Foodbank to distribute to welfare agencies. Ken from Foodbank says that the most popular item in non-perishable food drives is baked beans. “They’re nutritious, have a long shelf life and kids love them.” Big or small, a food drive donated to Foodbank or your local welfare agency is a great way to put food on the table for those in need this Christmas.
Each Christmas, Seasons Aged Care community’s staff and residents organise a Food Can Drive for Foodbank Queensland. This year they have set their goal at 5000 cans. Christmas The end of the year generates an array of emotions in each of us. Depending on your experiences over the past 12 months, the winding down of 2013 could mean the end of a challenge while to others it holds the promise of the start of another exciting chapter in the journey of life. So as Christmas approaches, I’d like to encourage everyone to take time to reflect on the year that is almost over, and look ahead to 2014 as a year of opportunity to grow and make a positive difference in our community. Christmas is a time for family, for those of us fortunate enough to have family nearby, and a time for friends. It is also a time of goodwill to caringly reach out to those who are lonely or doing it tough and in need of encouragement and support. During this Christmas season it is also timely to remember that every act of kindness creates a strong, caring and connected community. So many charities do amazing work in Logan. I would like to express my appreciation to all the volunteers who make a difference in the daily lives of others, and to the thousands of residents

in our community who have given so generously during these tough times so that others may experience joy at Christmas. I am so grateful to our city’s volunteers who selflessly offer their time, skills and passion – they continually demonstrate our city’s proud culture of giving and caring. They are the reason why I boast about our community spirit where ever I go, and as we grow and prosper in the years ahead we must never lose this community spirit. Christmas is also a time to count our blessings, however it is easy to get swept up in the commercial hype. We can get so busy buying presents, and preparing for parties and get-togethers, that we forget the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of Jesus Christ. I hope that however you celebrate this special season, you find the time to be thankful for living in such a wonderful city — Logan, the heart of South-East Queensland — where we have an abundance of community spirit. The festive season also sees the return of the Logan City Mayor’s Christmas Carols on Saturday 14 December at the Logan Metro Sports Fields at Crestmead. Bring your family along

Christmas Traditions Getting into the festive spirit
C
hristmas is upon us but before we all sigh in exasperation for what is often named the Silly Season we need to remember the traditional meaning of this holiday. What happened to the good old days of relaxing with family, eating watermelon and playing in the pool or the hose looped over the Hills Hoist on a gloriously hot Christmas Day? Have we forgotten what Christmas is really about? Where is the goodwill to all and peace on earth? More than ever it’s important to start bringing the good old traditions back so the joy and celebrations of this festive month is carried on to our children and grandchildren.
Carols and Christmas events Logan’s Carols by Candlelight, Saturday 14th December is an event not to be missed and is always a sure way to lift your Christmas spirit while singing along to “Deck the Halls”. Logan also boasts some of the best displays of house lights around and some of the best memories will be of driving around looking at the amazing works of light art. BACK PAIN ? Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions? • Lower Back Pain • Muscle spasm or strains • Bulging lumbar discs • Numbness or soreness in your legs • Shooting hip or thigh pain
Having back and leg pain can bring life to a standstill. You might not be able to play golf, work, or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep. You’ve got too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced. My name is Dr. Andrew Gorman, owner of Andrew Gorman Chiropractic. Over the years, I’ve seen hundreds of people with back pain leave the office pain free. Because I’ve seen it with my own eyes, I strongly believe...Back pain is NOT “just a part of life” and something you have to live with. Here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic… “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” – Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery
This means in just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, playing with your kids, enjoying your love life, or traveling again.

FIVE TIPS to Get Kids to Eat Their Vegetables We all know what it’s like. You’ve spent hours preparing dinner and your four year old has just decided he’s not going to eat his vegetables. While sending them to bed hungry may work in the short term; it is not going to help cultivate that love of vegetables that will be so vital for disease prevention in later life.
Here are our Naturopath’s top five tips for getting your children to love their veggies: Tip 1: Appeal to Their Curiosity
Tip 2: Variety Is the Spice of Life
If you don’t like eating the same thing over and over again don’t expect your kids too either. Explore a variety of fresh vegetables and cooking methods. Simple differences in preparation can make enormous changes to flavour and texture keeping vegetables fun and exciting.
As everyone knows, children are particularly curious about their environment and new experiences. Harness this curiosity to help children develop a love of vegetables by planting and growing your own. While not a short term solution to increasing vegetable consumption the process of growing, caring for and harvesting vegetables will make children far more interested in tasting the results of their work.

Tip 3: Forget the Knives & Forks for a While
Have you ever noticed how much more enjoyment we get out of eating without cutlery? There is something satisfying to our primal natures in resorting to eating with our fingers. Vegetables are ideal served on skewers, in wraps or inside the shell of scooped out zucchini, eggplants and capsicums. Even the simplicity of raw carrot and celery sticks with hummus can make for hours of fun. After bypassing childhood prejudices, presentation and preparation will ensure these once tarnished vegetables remain a favourite part of your child’s diet.
Tip 4: Seduce their Senses
Children have not had their senses dulled by years of abuse the way adults have. Using foods and preparation styles that appeal to as many senses as possible will increase the enjoyment of foods.
For example: • Stimulate them with smells of fresh smelling herbs like basil, mint and rosemary; • Excite their eyes with the amazing colours and visuals of vegetables like artichoke, button squash and fresh grated beet root.
Tip 5: Hide Them…
Let’s face it; no matter the creative, artful methods you try to use some vegetables are just not going to be a hit. While hiding some of the lesser liked vegetables is nothing more than subterfuge. It is a last resort that can help to slowly sneak some vegetables into your child’s diet and familiarise them with the tastes. A number of our clients have successfully made some yummy vege and choc chip cookies utilising the Superfoods for Kids Vital Vege Powder, with great success with their 2, 3 and 4 year old kids.

summer
I
t’s fast becoming the season to break out the swimmers, beach ball and the SPF30 and head out to enjoy the beautiful beaches we have on our door step. This year’s swim suit fashion trends will provide something for everyone’s personal style.
popular in the past they have taken a really bold step for 2013 by eliminating all the boundaries. Whilst in previous seasons there were set rules, this summer you will see floral, animal prints, abstracts and cityscapes as just a few of the many designs that will be on show.
Vintage inspired
Drape and gather styles
This summer’s styles will feature 1950’s inspired and modern designs collaborating to really make some stand out styles. By entwining vintage cuts and fabric with a more modernised design we will see those vintage styles really showcased but with a modern flare. Expect to see high waisted bottoms with modern colours and design that emphasise the hour glass figure and show off those womanly features.
By far the most versatile and flattering swimwear to come out of 2013 will be based on draping and gathering. This style is perfect for accentuating your curves and helping to shape your figure with its ripples and folds. Sometimes it’s easy to conform to basic colours like white or black and not be as bold as we desire but this summer is all about bright electric colours like reds and oranges and even on the opposite end to the scale soft pastels.

If easy to follow and flexible fashion is what you look for then mismatched bikinis are right for you. Purchase a couple of pairs that will work well together and feel free to mix them up instead of sticking with conformity. This style would work well in bold colour choices such as a blue top mixed with yellow bottoms or a bold design top with a block colour bottom. This is one style where you can really showcase your fun creative side and be as spontaneous and bold as you like.

The Mayor’s Reading in Schools Program was a direct outcome from the Logan: City of Choice Summit held earlier this year which sought to address key challenges in the Logan community. The program aims to address low literacy levels in Woodridge by encouraging early school age children to develop a love of reading. The Reading in Schools program has now reached close to 200 children, with the majority from families where English is a second language.

FITNESS with Pat Rae 4. Alcohol: Stick to one type of drink. Make it a beer night, or a wine night, or a gin night. Whatever you choose, stick to one. Mixing alcohol is a sure fire way to give yourself the biggest headache the next day.
RECOVERING
5. Replenish: Before you hit the sack, knock back a sports drink and those extra vegetables you cooked up before you headed out. The added electrolytes and fluid will replenish any you’ve lost during the night and the antioxidants in the vegetables may give your liver a helping hand and aid in your recovery over the next day or two.
FROM A
W
ith the silly season upon us, exercise is probably the last thing on your mind. You’re probably focussed on the next Christmas party rather than the next workout. However, with a little bit of planning, you can have the best of both worlds, a great workout, followed by a great night out free of guilt from over indulging and minimal hangover after effects. If you’re anything like me, Christmas parties are planned well in advance and around about now, you’ve started receiving your regular invites. Make a point of getting your exercise sessions locked in around all your social events, preferably the day of or before the big occasion, not the day after. I always find it a great motivation to put in a big effort at the gym usually the day of the party so I can head out knowing I’ve earned it and be guilt free.
Here are my top seven tips to avoiding that nasty hangover:
1. Dinner: Make sure you have a decent dinner, especially if the party you’re attending is only serving finger foods. Volume is the key as it will dilute the effects of the alcohol. If you include a plentiful helping of cruciferous vegetables, (broccoli) then the added antioxidants will assist the liver to cleanse your system of the toxins you’re about to introduce to it. If you are cooking, make an extra batch of vegetables for the late night snack when you get home.
2. Vitamins: As an added extra, take a couple of multi-vitamins prior to heading out. The extra vitamins and minerals may assist as in point 1. 3. Drinks: Once you arrive at the party, alternate between your favourite alcoholic drink and a glass of water. Again, this will dilute the alcohol effects and also rehydrate you as alcohol causes the opposite.
6. Recovery: Give yourself time to recover. You may feel ok the next day, but seriously, your body is fighting an uphill battle just to rid you of the poisonous toxins you drank the night before. Don’t go overloading it with extra stress by flogging yourself on a long run to burn off those extra calories. Take it easy, relax, stretch or go for a walk but nothing strenuous. Keep drinking water and eat plenty of antioxidants to aid your liver to rid your system of poisons and toxins. The quicker you recover, the quicker you can hit the gym again. 7. Be safe: Lastly, look after your mates. Christmas is a wonderful time of the year, but it can also end in tragedy. Mates don’t let mates drink and drive. _________________________ Pat Rae Personal Training Springwood | www.prpt.com.au 0414 654 372
A CHRISTMAS TAIL
Helen and Donna collaborated on this story about a mouse family who live in a doll’s house called Cherrywood Cottage. The Mouse family (yes, their surname is Mouse) is full of excitement as they await the arrival of Santa Paws. However, all doesn’t go to plan.
Great reviews
Local children’s author, and award winning children’s poet, Helen Ross, is celebrating the launch of her new picture book, A Christmas Tail. Co-written by award winning Victorian children’s author, Donna Smith, the illustrations are by talented Logan illustrator, Aaron Pocock.
A Christmas Tail has been receiving wonderful reviews. Nerida Wayland, a reviewer for Creative Kids Tales, an Australian website for Australian children’s authors, says that the story is easy to read and wellpaced and that there is plenty of action, particularly in the second half, to keep young kids engaged. “Aaron Pocock’s illustrations are vibrant with festive greens and reds,” Nerida says. “There is an abundance of traditional Christmas iconography with some cute mousey touches like little cheese wedge beds. Pocock effectively contrasts this with the lives of those less fortunate, establishing the reality of life outside the walls of the cosy cottage.”
December readings This new release is also available in Brisbane and Logan libraries, and Helen will be reading A Christmas Tail at Logan libraries on: • Friday 13 December at Jimboomba Library at 10.30 a.m. • Thursday 19 December at Beenleigh Library at 10.00 a.m. • Friday 20 December at Logan North Library Underwood at 10.00 a.m. - as part of their musical Christmas festivities.
Also join in Helen and Donna’s online book blog party at www.spiderinkpress.com from December 1-6. A Christmas Tail is available on Amazon and other online bookstores, and has recently been released on iTunes and Amazon Kindle. What to serve our guests as we count down the hours to the New Year can have us scratching our heads for just the right bubbly and nibblies, but it doesn’t have to be difficult.

Champagne is commonly seen as the drink of choice but cost can be a concern. Did you know that Champagne became popular after a worldwide marketing campaign, designed to encourage drinking of this style of sparkling wine from the Champagne region? And like most things that are highly advertised, the price is pushed up due to exclusivity and demand. But there remains a vast

BUILD A BETTER BUSINESS WITH SMALL BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
W
ith so many variables in running businesses few of us consider ourselves experts in every aspect. We may have skills and qualifications for our trade or profession, we may have great people skills and have a thorough understanding of our profit and loss statement. However, many of us face challenges when it comes to the highly specialised fields of Marketing, HR, Risk Management, and the laws and regulations that underpin the complex business world of today. Small Business Solutions programs and industry expert mentors can fill the gaps in our knowledge and put us on the right track. Philip Fung, Manager of Small Business Solutions, says, “Our Build a Better Business program provides small business owners with the skills to consolidate their existing knowledge base as well as formulate and execute a sound business plan to achieve success in the years ahead.”
Mentors making a difference
John Hebrard
Business Skills Mentor
Small Business Solutions has achieved success in Logan and throughout Queensland with innovative and practical programs based on matching businesses with experienced mentors. Business owners gain an understanding of the solid foundation they need to build for the future. As a small business owner himself, Business Skills Mentor John Hebrard, has 25 years’ experience in a wide range of business activities from mechanical engineering, to sales and marketing and management. His career has incorporated all the strategic and
corporate functions that make for an ideal mentor: commitment to ongoing training and development; a passion for finding effective solutions; and the professional know-how of what makes for understanding the customer and staff. John says business plans should be formulated with critical drivers and key performance indicators built around operations, marketing, sales, administration, and financial return. He helps business people understand the importance of viable and attractive products, how to analyse trends and develop benchmarks for their small business.
Building success in your timeframe and on your budget Time is money — you don’t have the time or money to attend extended courses. You want results, and practical advice that addresses the needs of your ‘real world’ business, and is affordable. The Build a Better Business program delivers oneon-one mentoring in your workplace and a series of five workshops for under $400. This program skills you to produce a practical, userfriendly business plan and develop an action plan. Your
mentor comes to you to guide you through the labyrinth of legal requirements in your industry, help build your client relationships, develop an innovative team and most importantly, to plan and grow your finances. They advise on how to establish business networks and get business advice from a range of successful business owners. Build your competitive advantage by enhancing business skills, profitability and growth through a Build a Better Business program.

NUMEROLOGY with Dawn Alice
O
S R E B M U N F O S N MISCONCEPTIO
n an individual basis, certain numbers resonate with some people better than others. Last month we spoke about ‘lucky numbers’ and came to the conclusion that there are no bad numbers. This issue we are having a glimpse at two numbers that could be considered to have an aura of illusion – numbers nine and thirteen. Is the superstitious folklore of a cat having nine lives true? No, as a matter of a fact they don’t! They are charmed animals with the capacity to endure high falls that would kill us humans and other animals. Their small size and well developed inner ear, together with a remarkable sense of balance work together to live and tell the tale. This serves as a good example for the ‘renewal’ or ‘birth’ aspect of number nine. Our numerology cycle has nine personal years to complete and then we are ready to begin all over again in a new phase. A human baby has nine months in the womb preparing for his new life. He is born with nine openings to the body. This baby began from nine twisted threads, which makes up the tail of a sperm. It then unites with the egg to form a circle of nine parallel tubes.
Friday the 13th
Interesting number nine quotes: • Cloud nine – A state of elation • Dressed to the nines – Elaborately dressed as nine assimilates to the best • The whole nine yards – A phrase to express, ‘the full extent’ or ‘the whole thing’ • A stitch in time saves nine – A good piece of advice that prevention is the key so ‘Just do it!’
There are various theories about Friday the 13th – fact or fiction they have had an enormous impact on the human psyche and create phobias. One assumption about Friday the 13th arises from Norse mythology. Friday derives from the Scandinavian goddess, Frigga. When Norse tribes converted to Christianity, Frigga was banished in shame and labelled a witch. Every Friday the spiteful goddess convened a meeting with eleven other witches plus the devil making a gathering of thirteen. They would plot ill turns of fate, and so Friday became deemed as ‘Witches Sabbath’. Another hypothesis is the Last Supper – thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one. Jesus was crucified on a Friday. During the 1800s, people became paranoid about Friday the 13th after stock market crashes. I have never had any more bad or good luck on Friday the thirteenth than any other day. Number thirteen is considered by as many cultures, as much an auspicious number as it is ill-fated.
Don’t allow yourself to be controlled by morbid superstitions – embrace life – welcome transformation, and you will not live in fear. Numerology is a universal gift presented as a puzzle. Each piece of information we acquire helps us to flourish and prosper along our pilgrimage. Enjoy the journey and remember to love your life!

Free e-book: Grand Vision
15 years ago I and some ten other people with similar views were on the verge of putting together an Independents Party to hopefully replace our present disastrous two party adversarial system of Government. Before we got going I had two strokes and our group just faded away without my leadership and determination. So I decided to write a book setting out my views and the actions required. I am now 84 years old and have not many more years ahead of me so I have started giving away, absolutely free, electronic copies of Grand Vision to all people who have a computer and who email me requesting a FREE copy which I then email back to them.
