MultiLink

Calling for volunteers! I magine settling in a new country and not being able to speak the language. Everyday interactions would be so very difficult to achieve — communicating at school or work or just a simple conversation at the shop. MultiLink classes help people learn to speak English and also provides a social environment where participants meet other people facing the same challenges and success during their settlement journey. These classes are well attended and popular with a current waiting list of over 100 people. Given the learning process and the limited supply of tutors, those on the list might have to wait up to two years to gain access.

“I support a harmonious, inclusive and diverse society”

Calling Volunteers

To address this waiting list for the New Year MultiLink is hoping to run four additional classes a week and are seeking additional volunteer tutors to assist the ESL (English as a Second Language) clients.

Before you think this is not for me, please consider this: • Do you speak English well? • Are you patient, tolerant, and understanding? • Do you want to help others and meet interesting people from all over the world?

Tutors do not have teaching degrees, what they have is the desire to help others learn this extremely difficult language we call English.

Having a chat — in English

Multilink offers training, support, resources, eager students and friendly staff. All they ask of you is that you teach the students conversational English — language they hear when shopping, visiting their children’s schools, everyday language. This is often referred to as “Survival English”. The classes are held on Monday to Thursday during school terms and the commitment would be just two hours a week in the afternoon at 38 Blackwood Road, Logan Central. To be part of this amazing organisation all staff and volunteers are required to hold a “Blue Card” or the willingness to obtain one.

Size and space resonates with first home buyers WHEN

Amanda Jaaskelainen and her partner Chris Wain visited My Home and the River Estate for the first time they immediately knew their search for a place to build their dream home was over. After six months of searching the couple visited the estate with a clear view of what they wanted – an affordable, spacious, semi-flat block of land away from the hustle and bustle of a built up area. My Home and the River Estate ticked all the boxes with blocks up to 1231sqm ranging from $219,000 to $255,000, set among 30 hectares of parklands on the banks of the Logan River. Miss Jaaskelainen, who works as a project officer for the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, said the couple had searched from Ormeau Hills to Rochedale for the right block of land. “Everywhere we looked the blocks were on slopes, expensive to build on and generally smaller than what was on offer at My Home and the River,” Miss Jaaskelainen said. “Buying at My Home and the River meant that we could build our dream home and have enough space to start a family. This estate is perfect because it’s quiet and peaceful, yet we have access to necessities at the local shops and we aren’t too far away from the major retail centres either.” The couple purchased a quarter-acre block and will build a four bedroom, two bathroom home

complete with study, media and an activity room as well as a double garage. Project co-developer and sales manager Geoff Kerkow said many prospective buyers at My Home and the River had recognised the value for money on offer at the estate. “The larger block sizes and comparative affordability to other estates in the area have galvanised prospective buyers, Mr Kerkow said. “We are fielding a lot of interest from buyers who don’t want a totally rural lifestyle, but they want fresh air and breathing space with general conveniences close by. The market response indicates we’re ticking all the right boxes here,” he said. Miss Jaaskelainen and her partner currently live in Shailer Park and are eager to start building their new home which they hope to move into in April next year.

“We are thrilled with our purchase and are glad to have found the perfect lifestyle balance that will allow us to bring up our family in an environment that gives us the best of both worlds,” she said. Launched in 2011 by a syndicate of local businesspeople, My Home and the River will eventually comprise 263 homes adjoining 30 hectares of river-fronting parkland with community facilities. The estate will be linked to the nearby Logan Village township by a planned 1km walkway to provide quick and easy pedestrian and bicycle access. House and land packages are available from all recognised builders including Coral Homes,

Metricon Homes, Plantation Homes, Newstart Homes, Hallmark Homes, C.J. Eaton Homes, Dixon Homes, Stylemaster Homes, DJ Builders & Son and Henri Van Baak Constructions. Dating back to 1865, Logan Village is a quaint township serviced by a bank, Woolworths supermarket, McGuire’s hotel, café and takeaway outlets, a range of professional and medical services including recently expanded Pioneer Health. The area is serviced by Logan Village State School and Canterbury College, which offers Prep to Year 12 and is a short seven-minute drive away. Visit myhomeandtheriver.com.au for more details.

An exclusive address for just 260 families My Home and the River is designed for space, recreation and the rural village lifestyle. Your own space with large blocks. You can build your dream home with space for a boat, a pool, maybe a work shed - simply more room for living. Adjoining the banks of the river and with over 30 hectares of developed natural parklands and a walkway to the village this estate is exclusive from the rest. Logan Star Reagan Dessaix You’d think that the owner of My Choice Fitness with a string of boxing titles and championships to his credit would be near the end of his career but for Reagan Dessaix, at just 17 years of age, he’s only just beginning, writes Samantha Lee.

A

fter achieving Queensland novice boxing champion twice, South East Queensland champion twice, Australian Golden Gloves champion four times, five times the Queensland State champion, and to top it all off the 2012 Australian Champion, Reagan now also has his own fitness center where’s he a personal trainer changing other people’s lives — for the better.

Reagan says that twelve months ago, he opened My Choice Fitness as a full commercial fitness center. “I did this at the age of 16. I had extensive help from Logan City Council’s town planning branch who I cannot praise enough. I have always been a very business minded person from a very young age, even to the extent of following the share market when I was 10 years old.” Reagan says that his father has inspired him throughout his life and given him the confidence

to start this venture. “I have lived in Logan my whole life, and I must say this is one great city,” Reagan says. “In the first year of trading I’ve helped numerous Logan residents of all ages with massive weight loss, and increases in their fitness levels and this gives me great joy to improve people’s health and lifestyle.”

Reagan aspires to continue his dream to be an AIBA professional boxer and it’s safe to say he is well on his way and is not only backed by his loving family but by his local community too. “I have just returned from Germany with two very major International wins at this stage of my boxing career,” Reagan says. Reagan’s gym, where he is the head personal trainer as well as a group trainer and children’s fitness trainer, is also the base for his personal training for his boxing career. Currently an amateur boxer with over 65 fights Australia wide and also overseas, he has worked tirelessly to progress in his career as well as committing himself to his business. Despite all his travelling he still calls Logan home.

he Chamber welcomes new members at the monthly Business Breakfast. By actively participating in the Logan community, chamber members remain at the leading edge of business and become part of a proactive, influential lobby group. Membership will allow our new associates to gain business advantage through interaction with other businesses in Logan.

TESTIMONIALS l Toscani’s Cafe, Bar and Restaurant was our first business in Logan. The

Logan Chamber of Commerce gave us an opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and also to listen to high profile speakers and learn from their experience. Running a business is a roller coaster ride and sometimes when you feel down it is good to talk to your peers and get fired up again. At every event we pick up new ideas and strategies for the future. Another big advantage of being a member is the constant encouragement from the committee to conduct business with fellow chamber members. This helps all of us grow our business community and contribute to the Logan economy.

l The Rec Club joined the Logan Chamber of Commerce as a Corporate

Member in 2009. In doing so, we have experienced a noticeable improvement in terms of the club’s recognition in Logan. Having the Chamber hold events in the Club has proved to be an excellent way of introducing other businesses (and through them, members of the public) to our venue and facilities. I look forward to continuing our corporate membership for many years to come.

The Berrinba Wetlands are a must for nature lovers while Underwood Park at Priestdale and Alexander Clark Park at Loganholme are fantastic picnic destinations with BBQ facilities, play equipment and plenty of shade. If the great outdoors isn’t to your liking, there is plenty to see and do at any one of Council’s nine libraries or the Logan Art Gallery. Visit www. loganlibraries.org for more information on library locations and activity times as well as opening hours during the holiday season. The Logan Art Gallery offers an extensive range of free public programs and includes

guided tours, practical workshops, special events and artist talks. A dedicated Young People’s Gallery showcases exhibitions for young people and provides fun, interactive activities for younger visitors. With plenty to keep residents busy during summer, I would encourage parents to plan ahead and keep an eye out for the hugely popular Krank school holiday program – the next program is scheduled for January 2014 so you’ll need to get in quick when registrations open in early January. I would encourage parents to look at all the various activities on offer around our city and think about getting their kids involved. Keeping our youth active and engaged will go a long way towards building a healthy and connected community. If you are looking for more things to do in and around our city, don’t forget to stop by our new website www.visitlogan.com.au to discover an array of destinations and activities for the whole family. Remember, with more than 950 square kilometres and 63 suburbs in our city, there is always something new to discover!

Don arrives at the RACQ CareFlight Rescue hangar at Toowoomba Airport, ready to begin a 10 hour shift. He and his team are briefed by the night crew, the aircraft has been refuelled and the patient oxygen tank remains full. The aircraft and gear is inspected and the daily weather forecast discussed; building storms could make flying difficult by late afternoon. Fifteen minutes later, with no time to make a morning coffee, the CareFlight Coordination Centre (C3) calls. A request has come through from the Queensland Coordination Centre (QCC) and the chopper with its highly skilled crew is needed at the scene of a serious car crash near Ipswich. Don briefs his team on the basic mission details, fires up the Bell 412 helicopter and departs Toowoomba Airport. In just six minutes the crew is airborne, cruising at 200 kilometres per hour, en route to save another life.

“It’s a rewarding job but one that is only made possible thanks to the generosity of the general public and businesses who donate to the Service.”

As the chopper approaches the crash, Don gets a good visual of the scene below. Police have blocked both sides of the road leaving it clear, so he lands on the bitumen just north of the crash site. Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics and the local Queensland Fire and Rescue Service crew is already on-site. A young woman’s life in now in the hands of Don and his team. The 20 year old is suffering both spinal and internal injuries and in a job like this, seconds count. Carrying a stretcher and breathing equipment, Don and the aircrewman follow CareFlight’s doctor and flight paramedic to the victim, she has been cut free from the wreckage but remains distressed and in a lot of pain. The doctor tells Don that once the patient is stabilised and ready to go, they’ll be flying to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. CareFlight’s medical team takes the lead, working for 20 minutes alongside attending QAS officers to stabilise the woman, reduce her pain and manoeuvre her onto the aircraft’s specialised spinal board. After helping load the stretcher into the aircraft, Don points the machine towards Brisbane and off they go. “Each year CareFlight’s crews assist around 1,400 people in need,” said Don. “And one in ten of our patients are victims of motor vehicle accidents.”

As the chopper shuts down on the hospital’s roof-top helipad, the patient is rushed to the Emergency Department where the CareFlight crew hands-over to the awaiting medical team. Mission complete, the young woman is receiving critical care at one of the State’s leading tertiary hospitals and Don and his crew know they played a crucial role in making that happen. They’re feeling confident she’ll make a full recovery. Don calls the QCC to let them know his team is again ready and available. His call is a timely one as he’s informed they’re needed at Mount Tamborine where an injured bushwalker requires urgent medical attention.

LOGAN CITY

We Send Anything, Anywhere! For Anybody!

1500

Before his shift ends, Don flies one more mission into Brisbane, this time from a small rural hospital for a patient in need of urgent medical treatment after a suspected stroke.

1100

The flight from the hospital to Mount Tamborine takes around 15 minutes. A man in his 50s has slipped eight metres down an embankment breaking his ankle. He’s in a lot of pain and surrouned by rugged bushland making it impossible for an ambulance to reach him. Don will have to winch the doctor and paramedic down to treat the man. It’s a delicate operation in unforgiving terrain and the wind is building. Don moves into position and brings the aircraft to a hover, guided by the Aircrewman who operates the winch. The doctor and paramedic are lowered carefully ‘down the wire’ to a clearing near the injured walker. When they’re free of the winch hook, Don moves the helicopter away so its powerful downdraft doesn’t hamper the medical team’s work. Over the radio he stays in contact with the ground crew, waiting while the medical duo wield their magic before winching them and the now stretchered patient back on board. This process takes just ten minutes but the rescue is time critical. Don must be mindful of fuel consumption. Once everyone is safely in the aircraft, Don takes off for the short, but vital, flight to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Mission two accomplished.

His mates flying CareFlight missions out of Bundaberg, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts have all had similarly busy days and Don gets back to base just before 6pm to hand over to the night crew.

“There’s never a dull moment,” Don said. “Our teams attend, on average, three rescue missions every single day.” “It’s a privilege to be able to serve the community the way we do,” he said. Pilots interested in a career at CareFlight need 2500 helicopter hours, including 500 hours twin engine time. CareFlight’s pilots and aircrewman include individuals who have served in the military or in highly experienced private sector aviation roles. “This isn’t a job for the feint hearted,” explained Don. “Like today’s missions show, from the time you get to work to the time you sign off, you don’t know what your next job is going to be or who’ll you’ll help next,” he said. It costs more than $18 million annually to keep RACQ CareFlight Rescue’s four community based helicopters services in the air. Outback excursions for the kids

S

wags of Queensland students will be encouraged to take an excursion to experience Australia’s most authentic classroom in Outback Queensland. Students will have to opportunity to visit a land where dinosaurs once roamed, where Australian legends were born and experience life on the land. Outback Queensland offers an authentic live classroom for students with its wealth of educational opportunities. The Outback Education Tour Subsidy Scheme is designed to steer students to travel to Outback Queensland. The school trips also provide a real boost for tourism operators with students staying in local accommodation and visiting a range of attractions. The scheme provides a subsidy of up to $130 per student towards the cost of their Outback trip, and has supported more than 1000 students to travel west. Outback Queensland Tourism Association General Manager Lloyd Mills said the Outback Education campaign would feature in print and online from now until March 2014.“As schools map out their plans for the year ahead we want to make sure a trip to Outback Queensland is on the books for more classes across the State,” Mr Mills said. “Working in partnership with Tourism and Events

Queensland, our aim is to highlight the educational lessons operators are able to share with students which bring to life the legends of Australia’s heritage.” The Outback Education Tour Subsidy Scheme is a joint initiative of Tourism and Events Queensland, the Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Outback Queensland Tourism Association and the Department of Education, Training and Employment. KID’S FITNESS

W

hen most people think fitness they think running or training in the gym, but it’s way more than that. If you ever drop the kids off at school early, watch and see what they’re doing — most of the time they are simply playing with a ball or chasing each other, or playing in the playground. So with that in mind what better way to get them fit but to introduce them to some physical fun where they learn to participate in fitness activities where the main objective is to play.

do with them, make it short and sweet. Five minutes is usually long enough before it’s time to change the game. 3. Mix it up. Kids get bored at doing the same thing over and over again so mix it up. If one day you play at the park, the next day play in the backyard. The day after play on the front lawn. 4. Get them to choose. Kids tend to be attracted to doing stuff they like doing. So, why not get them to choose the activity. At the moment our seven year old daughter is going through the whole “cart wheel” stage — one handed, two handed, you name it, she’s giving them a crack.

1. Make it ALL about them. Find something they love doing. Simple things like taking them to the playground and playing chase is an easy way to get them active. A tennis ball fits in your pocket and kids will chase it, throw it, dodge it, kick it and run away from it.

5. Make sure you’ve got water. One of the best ways to provide variety is to use the excuse of having a drink in order to switch the activity around. A quick game of catch and chase, followed by a drink and a climbing competition at the play ground. Another sip and then a forward roll comp.

2. Keep it short and sweet. Have you ever noticed how kids have such short attention spans? That’s just the way their brain works, short bursts. So any activity you do decide to

6. 30 mins MAX! No matter what you’re doing keep the entire activity to under 30mins, that way you’re guaranteed to have maximum focus. Any longer and you’ll lose them.

martphones are fast becoming the newest weapon in the fight against skin cancer for young Australians, with hopes that SunSmart apps will boost sun protective behaviours. The latest National Sun Protection Survey shows only 1 in 5 Australian adolescents (aged 12-17 years) used three or more sun protective behaviours when outdoors. The survey also found 1 in 5 adolescents (around 360,000) reported getting sunburnt on any given summer weekend in Australia. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said she hoped the Cancer Council’s SunSmart app would boost sun protective behaviours among young Australians. “Young Aussies use apps to keep them on track with their health and fitness – we hope our SunSmart app can be used successfully in the same way,” Ms Clift said. “Of the sunburnt adolescents surveyed, 20 per cent said their sunburn happened because they forgot to protect their skin,

GOURMET

I

n the heat of summer, when the last thing you feel like doing is cooking, often cold meat and salad tops the menu. But it doesn’t have to mean just cold ham or leftover turkey with lettuce and tomato. There is a vast array of different types of cold meat that can be used, either as an antipasto or as a main course. Here are a couple of other choices, writes Suzanne Walker.

Cold meats

CLEAN EATING H

• Beef: apart from traditional roast beef, try corned beef or pastrami wrapped in pepper and spices. • Salami and sausages: made primarily from pork but increasingly from chicken, look for a variety of sausage flavours and sizes from large beef sausages to tiny chipolatas. Also look at the deli for hot or mild sopressa, which is a large and rough textured salami or Hungarian which is a smaller finer textured salami. The largest available is Mortedella, slice thinly and also try chorizo, Kransky or Polish sausages for a change. • Fish: smoked salmon is available in cold or hot smoked varieties or Gravalax which is cured in salt, sugar and spices. Pickled fish such as herring or roll mops make a refreshing alternative and canned fish, such as salmon or tuna are handy to have in the cupboard.

Salads

Serve cold meats simply with some fresh bread and a light green salad or made into a substantial offering with some olives, feta cheese and sun dried tomatoes. For those wanting more salad with their protein, there are many recipes that combine both into the one bowl. Many of these dishes have been said to be invented by chefs after a hard night at work or simply trying to create a meal out of ingredients in the fridge.

ave you heard about the ‘clean eating’ phenomena that is now gripping people everywhere? Unlike some of the diet fads that are circulating these days, the reason the term ‘clean eating’ has become so wide spread is because eating clean is generally good for you. By eating clean you can maintain a healthy weight, lower your cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of disease. Some people also find they have clearer skin and higher energy levels when they ‘eat clean’. As long as you are eating a variety of wholefoods from all the five food groups (grains, vegetables, fruit, dairy and protein) clean eating can be very beneficial. Another good reason for eating clean— besides the obvious health benefits—is that many of the foods we purchase in the supermarket are full of preservatives. For instance, did you know that even your standard table salt sold in supermarkets contain an anti-caking agent? Other food items that have this agent (known also as E551) are: icing sugar, baking powder, cake mixes and drinking chocolate.

• Caesar Salad: a combination of cos lettuce mixed with parmesan cheese, fried bacon, croutons, boiled egg dressed with an anchovy mayonnaise. • Waldorf Chicken Salad: combine chopped cooked chicken with chopped apples, nuts, celery with mayonnaise. • Cobb Salad: place chopped lettuce in a bowl and top with chopped tomato, crisp bacon, cooked chicken breast, hardboiled egg, Swiss cheese, avocado and a blue cheese dressing. • Nicoise Salad: a combination of tuna (fresh or canned especially in olive oil), cold boiled potatoes, green beans, olives, mayonnaise and anchovy. • Chicken Pesto Pasta Salad: combine cooked cold chicken and pasta with pesto, parmesan and rocket leaves.

This is just an example and, of course, some preservatives are considered ‘harmless’. However more and more people are discovering that there are in fact some preservatives and additives which have absolutely no nutritional value and can actually be harmful if consumed in large quantities. This new knowledge is aided with the advent of many food additive apps which are now available for iPads, smart phones and the like. Simply type in a preservative number and a description is given, detailing the ingredients in the preservative and what the side-effects are, if any. Clean eating is a way of avoiding these additives by taking food back to the original form it was made—rather than purchasing a pre-made, processed food item which may not be very good for you at all.

IN BRIEF

Awards showcase state school excellence

S

even school communities have been presented with the highest accolade awarded by the Queensland Government to recognise excellence in our state schools.

Logan winner

The Showcase Award for Excellence in Community or Industry Partnerships went to Waterford West State School for ‘The Dream Circle’. Waterford West State School has embraced the diversity of a student population from 32 different countries with an Indigenous cultural studies and language program. ‘The Dream Circle’, started as an after-school initiative supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children with academic and cultural

experiences. Across the school, students now learn the local Indigenous language, and with the involvement of nonIndigenous participants, community elders and pre-service teachers gain cultural perspectives to increase pride in the school and beyond.

Student scholarships to boost state’s skills

As well as recognising best practice, the Showcase Awards are designed to share successful ideas and initiatives among schools across the state and expand professional development opportunities. Now in its fourteenth year, the 2013 Showcase Awards include categories relating to Early and Primary Years, Junior Secondary Years, Senior Years, Inclusive Education, Leadership, Innovation, and Community or Industry Partnerships. This year, 74 regional award winners each received $1,000 development grants. Twentyone state finalists each won an additional $5,000 grants and each of the seven state award winners won another $20,000 grants to spend on educational development within their local school communities.

Frontline education services are about to be further boosted, with teaching students and university graduates to benefit from $680,000 in scholarships with 40 scholarships under the Step into Teaching Scholarship and STEM Teaching Scholarship programs, each worth up to $25,000. Nurses in high demand There’s never been a better time to consider a rewarding profession in health care, as the demand for nurses is set to grow substantially. Health Skills Australia (HSA), one of the largest private providers of Enrolled Nursing training, offers a nationally accredited Diploma of Nursing developed by nurses, for nurses. With the current shortage of nurses estimated at 19,000 and expected to grow, there are many factors impacting the health care sector including an increasing demand for aged care, nurses in the field retiring and changing health care needs of the nation. According to Health Workforce Australia, the gap of nurses is predicated to be as large as 147,000 by 2025, with around 30,000 new jobs being created each year. With such a need for nurses in Australia, now is the time to gain a qualification and enter the industry. Enrolled Nurses work with Registered Nurses to deliver high quality care in a variety of health care settings, including acute, palliative, aged, rehabilitation, mental health and community care workplaces. By studying a Diploma of Nursing with HSA, students can become Enrolled Nurses in just 18 months, and have the opportunity to

Numbers to Guide us with New Year Resolutions

2014 7 H 9 Number One

ow confident are you that your New Year resolutions will succeed? It is easy to get caught up in the hype of a new year. We are all striving for a better quality of life and see a new year as the perfect opportunity to put our intentions forward. We make a promise to ourselves and others to start something good or stop a bad habit. Studies have proved that 90% of New Year resolutions fail despite predetermination. Rather than an impulse statement that you give up smoking, lose weight or save for a holiday, why not set your objectives as a goal.

January as we all know is the first month of the year and those born on the 1st of the first are advantageous. Number one sets the stage for brand-new ideas and projects with its quintessential quality. To obtain optimal results, it is advised to kick-start new ventures on the first of the month.

www.southcitybulletin.com.au

Number nine represents fulfilment and completion. 1st January 2014 calculates to the number nine. (1+1+2+1+4=9) This is a good omen that what you begin on the 1-1-2014 you have every chance of completing.

Free e-book: Grand Vision

15 years ago I and some ten other people with similar views were on the verge of putting together an Independents Party to hopefully replace our present disastrous two party adversarial system of Government. Before we got going I had two strokes and our group just faded away without my leadership and determination. So I decided to write a book setting out my views and the actions required. I am now 84 years old and have not many more years ahead of me so I have started giving away, absolutely free, electronic copies of Grand Vision to all people who have a computer and who email me requesting a FREE copy which I then email back to them. Number Seven

2014 is regarded as a numerology year of ‘7’. (2+1+4=7) Number 7 will be especially auspicious during this period. Number 7 is associated with ‘faith’ and the ‘obscure’. If you have conviction in your dreams then recognise number 7 within this abstract and sometimes doubting world. Begin with writing down and reading aloud your New Year’s resolution seven times. Make a commitment to revise your declaration every seven days. If it is weight loss that you are aiming for, then hop on the scales every seven days. Number seven is the seeker of truth and will search out answers to life’s experiences. Don’t be afraid to analyse your circumstances this year. Ask questions and examine situations in pursuit of achieving your 2014 aspiration. Walk through the open doorway of happiness. Numerology is a universal gift presented as a puzzle. Each piece of information we acquire helps us to flourish and prosper along our pilgrimage. Enjoy the journey and remember to love your life!
