Could This Help Your Arthritis? Do you have any of the these arthritic problems? Here’s your opportunity to find out O Osteoarthritis O Rheumatoid arthritis O Bursitis/tendonitis
O Degenerative joint disease O Lumbar disc problems O Aching pain in the arms or legs
Pain Pills Are Not The Answer Drugs may be making everything worse as a study in the UK reports: “The risk is highest for those who take aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol at least every other day to treat either a headache or another condition such as joint pain. The health watchdog NICE says that taking too many of these pills can actually make the brain more sensitive to pain, leaving the sufferer prone to more pain. There’s a time to use pain medications, BUT not before seeking a natural way to correct the CAUSE of the problem! Ask yourself…after taking all these pain medications…maybe for years…are you any better off? Pain Is Not Just ‘Old Age’ Have you had one doctor after another telling you this is just the natural process of the body getting older - that you should expect to have arthritis. Sure, if you don’t take care of your damaged joints now, as you get older they will be worse (which is why you shouldn’t wait any longer to see if I can help you.)
However, old age is not the cause of your arthritis. I’ll venture to say all 360 joints in your body are the same age, yet arthritis and joint degeneration has not affected every one of them – only your previously injured joints that never healed properly. My name is Dr. Andrew Gorman, owner of Andrew Gorman Chiropractic. Over the years, I’ve seen hundreds of people come in suffering with arthritis and leave the office pain free. Here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic… “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.”– Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery

Random acts of kindness Everyone wins when we pay it forward! Ever since the incredibly sad movie Pay it Forward was released in 2000, the simple concept of doing a good turn for someone who cannot do it for themselves has come into our collective consciousness, writes Wendy Johnson.
M
any cultures and traditions consider that the virtue of helping others is the cornerstone of their beliefs and should drive behaviour. But is such kindness as simple as it sounds? What benefits do we get from our altruism? Should kindness be its own reward? And is true selflessness even possible if we consider the buzz we might get in return for our thoughtfulness? Some have suggested that there is a vital difference between pay it forward and random acts of kindness. Pay it forward rests on the notion that the person receiving the benefit does not know the recipient, and when they respond they are encouraged to also pay it forward in any way they can. Random acts of kindness can be as simple as opening the door for someone to enter first, a smile at a stranger or helping an older person with their shopping. It’s usually seen as a spur of the moment event, over before either party have registered it has actually happened. The term ‘random act of kindness’ may originate from writer and peace activist, Anne Herbert, who claims she wrote, ‘Practise random kindness and senseless beauty’ on a placemat at a Californian restaurant in the 1980s.
Paying it forward
An anonymous spokesman for Alcoholics Anonymous said in the Christian Science Monitor in 1944, “You can’t pay anyone back for what has happened to you, so you try to find someone you can pay forward.” Many people regularly take the opportunity to pay it forward, often in a monetary way. Ms Bobbie Blackson says that she paid for a complete stranger’s parking fee at The Barracks underground car park as he didn’t have change. “I was standing behind him waiting to pay for mine and he was clearly in difficulties. He tried to refuse it, but I asked him to pay it forward one day.”
some milk and a lovely mum with four kids let me go in front of her at the checkout. So I left $50 with the cashier so she could surprise the mum when she came to pay — and I didn’t stick around to see the result.” The internet abounds with tales of secret benevolence. Apparently, a US Iraq war veteran could not afford to buy his fiancée a $US 10,000 engagement ring. A man overhearing their conversation bought the ring anonymously for them. The jewellery salesperson kept his identity secret for several years until the man’s death. Katelyn at the Coffee Club Logan Mega Centre says that something similar occurred to her at a previous Coffee Club restaurant. A man overheard a conversation of a woman explaining her extreme financial difficulties to her friend. As he was paying for his own meal, he paid for the meal for the two women. Diane O’Reilly says she was in a queue at Coles recently and two young men ahead of her were obviously on a budget of $50. “All their items were scanned but they were short. So they were putting things back,” Diane says. “It was all healthy food, not rubbish, so I paid for what they couldn’t afford. Turns out they were backpackers from Germany and they were so sweet and grateful. It positively made my day.”
Anonymous kindness
Logan’s fitness guru and writer for this magazine, Pat Rae, also has a pay-it-forward frame of mind. “I was over at ALDI Kingston a few weeks ago buying
Receiving goodwill
So what about those on the receiving end of someone’s generosity? How do they react? Logan City Writers co-ordinator Rebecca Dobbie says that a few months ago she took three boys out for Macca’s. “I wasn’t hungry so I didn’t order anything. A staffer came over and gave me $20, saying someone had said to give that to me. I was very touched, but I asked the staffer to hold onto it and give it to the next family she thought could use a little help.” Logan writer Briohne Sykes was having breakfast with her 14-year-old child during one of her chemotherapy treatments. “I went to the counter to pay and … no charge. uu Page 12

– Paving the way for our energy future A recent survey indicates clearly that rapidly rising electricity costs are the greatest concern of most Australian households. In a list of regular household costs electricity was the cost of living that is placing the greatest pressure on Australian householders.

Energy is a critical resource that will continue to increase in cost in the years ahead. Solar power, with a life expectancy of 25+ years, offers a way to improve operating results by reducing the dependency on power supplies with uncertain future costs. A major benefit is definitely to lower your carbon footprint, but for many households the improved financial results from lower operating expenses will be a major drawcard for switching to solar.

The Survey of Community Views on Energy Affordability, released in November 2013, showed that in 2012 around 84% of households were “very” or “quite” concerned about the current cost of electricity, and of this figure, a huge 44% were “very concerned”. It’s no surprise then that all over the country, homeowners are turning to solar power as an effective way to reduce electricity costs.

Your Day Your Way You Choose Red
Fashion designer Vera Wang’s recent collection boasted a number of wedding gowns in shades varying from red to burgundy. Sure there were the bouffant style frocks, but somehow in red they look pretty sharp.
Pink
A quick internet search will turn up any number of pink wedding dresses. First of all, try Pinterest where Gail, with more than 5,000 pins, shows off dresses “from palest pink, nude, blush, peach, petal, fuchsia”. Remember that Reece Witherspoon and Gwen Stefani both wore pink. In the right shade to suit your complexion and hair colour pink can be a knockout.
Green
Heading back to Pinterest, Margaret, with only 44 pins, is sharing any number of green dresses from palest pea to darkest emerald. Again, if you suit green this would definitely be a wild choice.
Purple
If you said you were wearing eggplant to your wedding, your friends would be forgiven for raising their eyebrows. But this rich shade is hugely complimentary to flowers of virtually any colour. Granny’s lavender and lilac frocks simply don’t cut it unless the style is ubertrendy. And remember, the whole wedding party has to fall into line with your colour

choice. How about regal purple and luscious shades of plum or shiraz? Fabulous for a winter wedding!

Orange
Don’t discount orange for your wedding dress. This is a great colour (very now) and is associated with sunshine and the tropics, very appropriate for our autumn days. It suggests happiness and creativity, with the vibrant energy of red and the exuberance of yellow. It would take a brave bride to embrace orange. It’s a bright colour that probably only suits brunettes.

Black
Whether you’re fond of the punk-rock-chick look or maybe a Gothic fantasy, black certainly makes quite a statement. A white dress with heaps of black lace can also be very dramatic. Be careful that your black dress does actually look like a dress and not your wedding night lingerie. Black can be a magnificent choice if you’re well-endowed in every department and lends itself to great choices of flowers for the bouquet.

MEET THE PRINCIPALS Runcorn State High School As a Principal, I recognise more than ever how important it is for schools to prepare their students for an ever changing future. This means being aware of innovation, tempering that with traditional values, having flexibility, yet ensuring high standards prevail. I believe we have found a nice balance in how we cater for the needs of the individual.
Elena Itsikson
Runcorn State High School has a fine tradition of producing conscientious and aspirational students. Since 1986, we have worked very closely with our community –
parents, industry and tertiary partners – to secure “the edge” for our students. As our community has changed over the years, we have embraced cultural diversity and celebrated difference. The tone of the school is calm and purposeful and students know about the “Runcorn way” – strong feelings of “Pride, Success and Excellence” which are captured in our motto. We have an absolute commitment to ensuring our students have access to pathways. We deliver a robust academic
focus underpinned with university partnerships, early entry to university studies and the honours program. An acclaimed vocational education and apprenticeship program has attracted commendation. This includes our international hospitality program. Once well known for the sporting “Blues” program, Runcorn High has now diversified to embrace artistic, creative and digital experiences in the classroom.

Chris Raju
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Seton College. It has a long tradition of assisting students with specific educational needs. The College is a Catholic coeducational High School with a maximum enrolment of 280 students from Years Eight to Twelve. An extensive building program during the past three years has seen the College expand to accommodate a larger senior group and the arrival of the Year Seven student cohort in 2015. Seton College welcomes students with a range of abilities. In particular it seeks to provide opportunities for students who have experienced difficulties

Small classes, a solid core curriculum, focused teaching and extensive learning support give students the opportunity to do their best “whatever their personal best may be”. Students are encouraged to live the Christian Gospel values and ‘see the face of Jesus in everyone they meet.’ In their senior years students may choose to study for the Queensland Certificate of Education, do vocational and Certificate courses or choose to transition to appropriate academic and vocational pathways. Work experience, work placements, traineeships,

BURSARIES FOR LOCAL STUDENTS Eighteen Logan City tertiary students will find the path to study a little bit easier thanks to the financial support of Logan City Council and 15 local businesses. The students are the 2014 recipients of the Logan City Tertiary Educational Bursary. Logan Councillor Luke Smith said Council was proud to be celebrating the 20 th year of supporting local tertiary students through the course of their studies. “We established the program in 1995 with our solicitor Corrs Chambers Westgarth and provided the bursary to two local financiallydisadvantaged students to offset the cost of their courses,” he said. “Over the past two decades, we’ve been able to help more than 100 students with the costs of travel to their chosen institution, text books and the other costs that students often find hard to cover. Cr Smith said each student would receive $3,000 over three years. “Bursary applicants are assessed on their academic, cultural and community achievements, and any special circumstances that adversely affect their family’s capacity to meet normal costs of tertiary education,” he said.
Seafood can be quick to prepare, inexpensive and great for your health. Here are some of my family’s recipes to try. Maureen’s Fish Cakes Boil and mash three potatoes. Finely chop one onion, add to a can of mackerel (skin and bones removed), one can of tuna, an egg and salt and pepper. Form into balls with wet hands and roll in either flour or Panko crumbs. Fry until golden brown and serve with a salad.
BULLYING NO WAY
Bullying is defined as: psychological, emotional, cyber, social or physical harassment of one student by another at school or within the school community. This includes at school and within its grounds, in transit between school and home, local shopping and sporting centres, at parties or local parks, and in cyberspace. The playground is the most common place for bullying to occur. Last year Queensland led the nation on National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence with around 500 schools and almost a quarter of a million school children participating in activities on the day. Queensland schools have continued to be proactive and work with students in
a positive way through special assemblies, newsletters, quizzes, poster competitions and art galleries, as well as by making music, games and video clips promoting antibullying. Queensland school students are uniting in record numbers for the fourth annual National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Already more Queensland schools have signed up than any other state for the national event on Friday 21 March. More than 175,000 students from 305 Queensland schools have so far registered to participate—55 per cent higher last year. Registrations continue for another five weeks. Schools that haven’t already registered can do so now at www.bullyingnoway.gov.au.

HOLIDAY ESCAPE
Peter’s Garlic Calamari
Calamari hoods are very inexpensive to buy. If they’re not cleaned, don’t be put off. Simply pull off the skin and remove the clear piece of cartilage. Wash, dry and open calamari out to make a flat piece. Score with a sharp knife and cut into bite size pieces. Fry a finely diced onion and three gloves of garlic in a fry pan. Add calamari and toss for about three minutes until cooked. Add a splash of cream and serve with rice and top with chopped parsley.
Mussels
Mussels are another inexpensive seafood option. Clean a kilo of mussels by placing in water and pulling off the beard. Discard any open mussels. Fry one chopped onion and one garlic clove in a large pot, add mussels, ½ tin of tomatoes and a splash of white wine. Place on tight-fitting lid and steam. Shake the pan occasionally until most mussels open. Discard any that don’t open. Serve with crusty bread and butter.
Tuna Pasta
This recipe fed me during the lean years of university. Cook some pasta, and in a separate fry pan cook a finely chopped onion, add a drained tin of tuna and 100 ml of cream. Drain cooked pasta and add to tuna. Add more cream if necessary and top with cheese. Serve with a salad. Bon Appetit!

Queensland is renowned for its spectacular fishing locations and great family getaways. If you think fishing is just for the man of the house then read on, writes Samantha Lee. If you want to take the kids on a fishing adventure one weekend but don’t want to drag the whole family on a camping debacle, then why not try some of these mustvisit local fishing locations? Ta l l e b u d g e r a Creek, located between Burleigh Heads and Palm Beach on the Gold Coast, is a great place to set the kids up for easy fishing. With Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Luderick and Mangrove Jacks, there is a wide variety of fish for the kids to catch. And there are also picnic areas and scenic walks nearby. The Spit, just north of Main Beach on the Gold Coast, is a family favourite that is easy to get to and offers great options for the family, being close to popular Gold Coast attractions. In fact, Sea World is just around the corner – just in case the fish aren’t biting! Raby Bay in Cleveland, Redlands, is not only a lovely spot for all the family — it’s a fisherman’s paradise. You will literally see the fish leaping from the water. The canals will keep everyone busy catching fish all day. Bribie Island is the only Moreton Bay island that you can drive to. It’s another location that is packed to the brim with fish and crabs and offers loads of fishing options such as the canals or beachfront. Deepwater Bend at Bracken Ridge is notably the most fished-in location in the Pine Rivers
system. It has choices for the whole family, with short and long range casting options, and will keep the kids and Dad happy for the whole day. Wherever you choose to take your family on a day out, it’s not so much about the location as it is about the people you are surrounded by. So put your feet up and enjoy the tranquil sounds of water and laughing children. And if you’re lucky, you’ll catch your dinner!

Does “Calories In Versus Calories Out” Really Count?
Another customer had paid the lot for me and, through the waitress, wished me best of luck for my treatment.”
Delayed generosity
Said to have been started more than 100 years ago in Italy is the concept of paying for a coffee in advance for the next person. Termed cafè sospeso (suspended or pending coffee) is a cup of coffee paid for in advance as an anonymous act of charity. The tradition began in the working-class cafés of Naples, where someone who had experienced good luck would order a sospeso, paying for two coffees but drinking only one. Later, a poor person would then be served the second coffee for free. The suspended meal movement is rapidly gaining pace in China too. A meal delivery driver noticed many poor people at the local hospital, and when he shared this with the restaurant owner they initiated the suspended meal options for their customers to donate a meal of noodles. Variations of the concept have spread to the Ukraine, Bulgaria and London, some with take-away coffee cups specially marked ‘paid’ or fast food restaurants’ snack containers. The concept especially appeals to people who believe it’s better to give food rather than money to street beggars.
The motives of altruism
Trista Penhey, director of Restore Lifestyle Coaching, says that sometimes when involved in acts of kindness we can get so caught up in the act of doing good that we weary of well doing. “It’s important to examine our motives,” 12 Trista says. “Are we doing something kind for others to see or to give ourselves an inner boost? While these are bi-products of good works, we should always give from an unselfish heart, with the recipient always the focus. While they may be helpful, I’ve never been a believer in random acts of kindness. I think kindness should have more value and be a part of our everyday lives.” If we feel morally obliged to help others, we cannot attribute our actions to altruism. What joy would we reap if we grudgingly paid for a
O
suspended coffee or felt pressured into giving up our seat on the bus? True altruism can only ever be offered without any expectation of reward. The movie Pay It Forward suggested that the practice of helping one another can spread organically, creating an impact of making the world a better place. And that can only be a good thing.
If you have a pay it forward story, share it on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/scBulletin

Keeping the engines revving to burn more fuel
About now you’re saying to yourself, “What the…? Let me explain EPOC. Following intense bouts of strenuous exercise, the body goes through a rapid, dramatic increase in oxygen consumption in order to repair damaged tissue, remove lactic acid, lower body temperature, remake ATP (stuff used by cells for energy) and a whole lot
of other energy requiring processes. During this EPOC state, body fat stores are broken down into free fatty acids that are released directly into the blood stream to be used as energy by the body to do all these things. This EPOC state can last for anywhere between 24-48 hours. This means that for that period of time, after an intense bout of strenuous exercise, you are burning a truckload more calories than you would normally in the same period. It’s like you’re still revving your car at 7,000 RPM and burning petrol but going nowhere. That same 30 minutes you spent going for a brisk walk? You may have burnt more calories than I did lifting heavy weights, but your body didn’t enter the EPOC state. So once you finished your walk and sat down, your engine slowed down again. So while calories out really do count, it’s pointless simply exercising more to burn more calories during the session. A smarter and more time-efficient option for fat loss is to start lifting weights to create the EPOC effect.

ur obesity pandemic exists because people are simply consuming more calories than they are burning off in any given period. Repeat this again and again, and the excess calories will be stored on our body as body fat. Just look at your local food court for proof. But it’s a mistake to think that to burn more calories you have to simply exercise more, or that reducing calories is simply a matter of eating less. You can burn more calories through exercising without actually exercising MORE. Let me show you. Which burns more calories – 30 minutes of brisk walking or 30 minutes of lifting weights? Usually it’s 30 minutes of walking. But there’s a problem with attaching calorie counts to exercise sessions. It assumes that you’re not going to burn any more calories for the rest of the day, and that’s simply not true. While the brisk walking session burnt more calories than my weightlifting session, it didn’t put my body into a state of EPOC – Excess post exercise oxygen consumption.

BUILD A BETTER BUSINESS Bella Diamontes and Small Business Solutions
South City Bulletin has teamed up with Small Business Solutions to bring knowledge and information to the small business sector of Logan. Six local businesses have already undergone two sessions with John Hebrard in a bid to develop the skills needed to make their small businesses a success in today’s market, writes Samantha Lee. Bella Diamontes striving for business success Julie-anne Faranda, owner of Bella Diamontes Beauty Therapy in Springwood, jumped at the opportunity to take part in the Build a Better Business program. “I’m curious to see how our business is travelling,” she says. “I’m enjoying seeing the difference between what I already know and what I can learn to take my business to the next level.”
Julie-anne Faranda
Julie-anne says it was pleasing to find she was quite on par with the business side of things. She enjoyed being challenged with the legal requirements that have just come into play plus new marketing and media techniques. “The Small Business Solutions program has made me more proactive in my business, keeping me on track with my weekly business duties,” she says. “It’s been so helpful understanding the legal requirements and marketing side of things. Being not so tech savvy, this was really informative and I’ve learnt a lot.” Business Skills Mentor John Hebrard has the strategic knowledge and expertise that make him an ideal business mentor: commitment to ongoing training and
development; a passion for finding effective solutions; and the professional know-how regarding what constitutes great communication and understanding between customers and staff. Julie-anne says John is a down-to-earth mentor who has the experience to help small businesses grow and expand. “John is very approachable and experienced, which makes him a great mentor for the program,” Julie-anne explained. “He made me more aware and more proactive with the business legal requirements side and in keeping my bookkeeping tidy.” John and Small Business Solutions understand the demands of the small business sector of Logan and offer these businesses the keys they need to build on their success. Julie-anne says she learnt a lot from the program, especially in the area of media and marketing, where John brought in a key speaker on the topic to broaden their knowledge. “Media and marketing is the area I now want to conquer, and with the knowledge I gained from the program I feel I’m now ready to do that,” says Julie-anne.
Building Success The Build a Better Business program that John Hebrard presents includes producing a practical, user-friendly business plan and developing an action plan. Participants will gain a Cert IV in Business Management on completion of the course. Philip Fung, Manager of Small Business Solutions, says, “Our Build a Better Business program provides small business owners with the skills to consolidate their existing knowledge base as well as formulate and execute a sound business plan to achieve success in the year ahead.” At just $395 for the five workshops, including two hours of one-on-one mentoring in your workplace as well as networking opportunities and business mentoring support, the Build a Better Business program is great value. From the president BILL RICHARDS Recently I’ve been speaking about the importance of service in business. But that is just one part of the business model. When people say they are being undercut and lose sales, I have to say, “If you have a small business, how will you compete on price alone? Are you in a market with some big players close by or online? If so, you need to be looking at the concept of price vs value.”
back to value. What value can you give your customers? • Personable, consistent, reliable service before and after the sale • Well-trained, knowledgeable staff with excellent product knowledge on every aspect of your goods or services • Sales staff who know how to up-sell and cross-sell in a way that your customers actually appreciate as it fits their needs • Using your “live” database of clients for email newsletters containing hints, tips and targeted offers, not just specials
As an auctioneer I see the price vs value challenge regularly. People think their house is worth a fortune and buyers think it’s worth 10% – 40% less. Never in all my years in real estate has anyone said they will pay full price for a property. Now what does this tell us? They do not see the value at the price listed. In our current economic climate here in Logan, we cannot compete on price alone. It comes www.southcitybulletin.com.au | March 2014

Zilch and zip are slang terms and have no connection whatsoever with the essential nature of zero, nor does nought or nil. Zero is limitless. The ‘0’ is a conglomeration of ‘all that is’. A big word to describe the never-ending possibilities of the ‘0’ is ‘heterogeneousness’. Zero comes to us from the Latin term ‘nulla figura’, meaning not a real figure.
A free program designed to take the pressure off parents expecting their first child is available for Brisbane and Logan residents as part of a research project at the University of Queensland. It is run by the Parenting and Family Support Centre, the home of Triple P.
Ancient associations to zero
With connection to birth, the zero was illustrated as an egg in some by-gone periods. Ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphs for their digits. The symbol for zero, ‘nfr’ has the meaning, ‘beautiful’. During the Middle Ages, zero was thought to epitomise privileged knowledge and secret codes. The origin for the term ‘love’ for ‘zero’ in tennis has a few explanations; this is one I like. When tennis originated it was called l’euf, which means egg which looks like a zero. It is the circle that we relate the zero to in modern explanation with the phrase, ‘circle of life’.

Zero accompanying any number regardless of quantity always increases the potency as it is viewed as ‘alpha and omega’. This term ‘alpha and omega’ was derived from the first and

Although the zero is a valuable companion to single numbers for a birth day, too much of a good thing can tip the scales. The consequence of multiple zeroes in a numerology chart is fewer single digits. Individual numbers carry different qualities to help us along. Those born in the year 2000 have three zeroes just in their year alone. Assuming their birthday is the 30th they then have four zeroes and less variety of qualities compared to someone born in 1978 on a birthday 3. These people possess attributes of number one, nine, seven, eight and three. Don’t despair though, many zeroes and few numbers often result in greater determination and valuable experiences in life. The zero after all is limitless.
