PALM LAKE CARE BETHANIA COMMITMENT TO CARE AND QUALITY OF LIFE Palm Lake Care has reinvented the traditional aged care facility with its stunning new and very unique waterfront property at Bethania. Palm Lake Care Bethania was cleverly designed with the adjacent lake top of mind. The extensive main lounge/dining room is cleverly built out over the water so residents and their guests can take in the soothing natural views while watching the lake’s community of ducks, water wrens and breeding swans go about their daily business. A large fountain, spraying water high into the air, is the focal point of the lake providing the calming, peaceful, soothing sound of flowing water wherever you are on the property. In fact, all of the 118 extralarge rooms also has either a direct view of the lake or is within a short walk of the waterfront serenity. When you get down to water level at the lake’s edge, a safe concrete pathway allows for gentle exercise or an upclose nature experience if fishing or turtle spotting, for example, is on the agenda. Adding to that sense of the natural environment that is so key to this stunning property, each individual room also has its own direct access, via large sliding doors, to an adjacent external courtyard so residents can take in leafy views, fresh air and sunshine. Palm Lake Care Bethania boasts
all levels of care on the one site. Of the 118 rooms, 78 are low care with 40 other rooms in the high care or secure memory-support unit. Each large, luxury room offers a private ensuite, wall-mounted flat screen TV, fridge, walk-in robe, automatic sensor lighting and an individual reverse-cycle air conditioning unit. Residents enjoy fresh, restaurant-quality meals three times daily from the large, modern kitchen and can always access tea, coffee and a snack around the clock. An onsite coffee lounge is also available for the convenience of family, friends and visitors. With individual rooms more like those found in a five-star hotel than in aged care, Palm Lake Care Bethania’s facilities and services lists are equally as impressive. Because residents’ health and wellbeing is of utmost importance, there is a Registered Nurse onsite 24 hours a day, while dedicated doctors’ consulting rooms and an allied health room provide a private
location for visiting GPs, dieticians, physiotherapists, podiatrists, speech therapists and massage therapists. At a social level, the diversional therapist ensures residents are kept busy with a wide array of daily organised activities including concerts, visiting entertainers and other outings. The baby grand piano and adjacent dance floor are focal points in the extensive lounge area and give residents reason to get up on their feet for a dance. The fully equipped gym offers gentle exercise programs and residents can also keep active through indoor lawn bowls. You’ll also find an onsite barber, hairdresser and beauty salon, 50-seat theatre, library with computers and Internet, and a church. Palm Lake Care Bethania is securely gated and features many additional security cameras around the property for families’ peace of mind. It’s located within minutes of a variety of retail and grocery shops, major shopping centres and other key services. Accommodation packages are many and varied, so there’s something to suit all levels of dependence and other requirements.

WHY ARE WE MORE INKED THAN EVER BEFORE?
What was once socially unacceptable has become a fashionable accessory seemingly overnight, writes Samantha Lee
particular looking to the Samoan, Maori, Chinese and Japanese cultures for tattoo inspiration. The Japanese tattoo is widely used as the Japanese use of colour and artistic style is seen by many as a beautiful way to put a tattoo together. Many people are also taken with Asian symbols and their symbolic meaning. Jasmine Fuller says she chose the Japanese symbol for summer, “because it represents everything that is light and wonderful and fun in life. I was about 23 and going through a very hard time, and I needed a constant reminder that there is always light and warmth in the world.” Choosing a full sleeve Japanese tattoo, Damien Golding says he likes the Japanese use of colour and the artwork. “I chose to get a sleeve mainly because I really liked tattoos and always wanted one. I wasn’t worried about what people thought; it was for me.”
Melissa Owen was only 16 when she got a tattoo of Porky Pig on her back. “I mainly got him because he was cute, but I think it was also to be rebellious, I suppose, and express myself,” she said. David Beckham has 34 tattoos and isn’t the only celebrity to showcase their body art. There’s Johnny Depp, the Commando and Lady Gaga too. The list goes on of famous idols that aren’t afraid to be tattooed. Tattooed celebrities often inspire youth to emulate their decisions, so it’s no coincidence that as the number of stars that have tattoos rises, so does the popularity of tattoos in society. Clare Miles, owner of The Painted Lady in Holland Park, says, “Tattooing has increased in popularity a lot due to seeing sports stars and other famous people heavily inked. And reality TV shows have helped highlight what is available in terms of great tattooing and how it can be a healing art form.”
Youthful self-expression With tattooing becoming more widely accepted, it has become easier for young people to use body ink as form of self-expression and rebellion. During a time in life when feelings of becoming an individual and breaking away from the family mould is such a major life event, young people seek out ways to individualise themselves and become their own person. Tattooing is often seen as one way to do both.
Women’s emotional expression Over the past few years, and especially with the popularity of Kat Von D from LA Ink on television, women have really embraced the concept of individualism that tattooing offers. Since the 1960s, when the number of women getting tattoos began to increase, no one would have thought that now around half the number of people getting tattoos are women, and that statistic is on the rise. Clare Miles says, “Tattooing has definitely become more popular with women over the last few years. I believe they feel more comfortable with getting a tattoo as there are a lot more female tattoo artists now. Society doesn’t tend to judge as harshly as it once did and there are more women with lots of ink coverage. It is more accepted by employers in many industries now.” uu Page 12

s a way to express our individualism, the once dark trade of tattooing, beloved by sailors and gangs, is now a fashion trend. Whether it’s a demure butterfly on a girl’s ankle or a full sleeve of menacing sci-fi characters, it’s clear we’ve embraced tattoo culture. It’s said that Cate Blanchett had a tattoo on her wrist straight after her recent Oscar win, and many celebrities such as sports players, musicians and pop stars really drive the obsession with decorating our bodies. Body ink has changed our cultural standards and now, instead of tattooing being a dark trade, it’s a highly sought-after form of individualising our bodies. Cultural influences Australia is a hugely multicultural society and we have truly embraced other cultures’ forms of body ink,

OUT AND ABOUT
AUSSIE HELPERS When you look at the photo you’d think this was in some desert country far away. But it’s not. This is here in Queensland. With more than 65% of Queensland and New South Wales being listed as drought declared, the enormity of the toll this takes on farmers and their families is immeasurable. The farmer who shared the photo would have sent a few photos of their cows but felt that would be too distressing for city folks, and that they are handfeeding 500 cows. She said, “Our district has been getting support from a group called Aussie Helpers who are mostly volunteers. They are trying to help people over a huge area. We missed out on the recent rain with only 3.5ml here over the last three months. We are all out of money and soul.”
The premises next door will include a dining room where multicultural chefs will be able to demonstrate their national cuisine to the public. This area will also be available for meetings and catered functions. Soon a deck will be built at the front where, Sharyn says, they will be featuring ethnic music nights. Along with a great selection of Aromas coffees, as well as salads, wraps, burgers, and delicious cakes and slices for morning and afternoon tea, the café will be offering the cultural cuisine of the week. As part of the social enterprise, there is also the Spice Kitchen which will create and market the individual blends of spices that makes each cuisine different and unique.

PERSONALISED APPROACH TO QUALITY CARE PRIVATE aged care communities now offer a much more personalised experience, according to Seasons Private Aged Care. Amid growing demand for a more flexible and personalised lifestyle, the communities are combining the freedom of living in one’s own home with the care and services required to make life as comfortable as possible. Private aged care offers the community lifestyle and day-to-day care of traditional nursing homes, and can provide the benefit of technologies and services typically found only in a hospital setting. In private aged care facilities the focus is on the individual’s needs. This may mean ensuring a couple can remain together in their own home, with the provision of personal or nursing care, or specialist dementia and palliative care services. Residents buy and have leasehold title to their own home, which is ideal for those seniors who wish to retain their independence for as long as possible without having to worry about needing to move in the future. The comforts of home Depending on the location, private aged care communities offer a variety
of home choices with the same privacy and comfort residents have enjoyed throughout their lives: their own front door, small pets, a private space where friends and family can visit or stay. Interiors are bright and attractive and typically comprise a lounge and dining room, full kitchen, one or two bedrooms, bathroom and laundry facilities, and a private balcony or courtyard. All homes also have inbuilt emergency response systems and monitoring technology. There are no stairs, ensuring homes are wheelchair friendly, and most have wide access doorways and safety grab rails in the bathroom. Other features can include airconditioning, security screens and private parking for those who require it. Each private community is staffed by professional carers and all communities have a consulting room for visiting GPs and health professionals. The community dining room offers home-cooked meals and the lifestyle centres provide comfortable facilities including lounge areas, libraries, cinemas and activities rooms. Friends and family are always welcome for visits and family celebrations, and there is an active events calendar for residents who still love getting out and about.
The communities offer a variety of home choices, with the same privacy and comfort residents have enjoyed throughout their lives. At Seasons Private Aged Care facilites, the focus is on the individual’s needs.
Private in-home care One of the great benefits of private aged care communities is that residents and their families know care is always on hand. Fully qualified and experienced carers are available around the clock, in the privacy of the residents’ own homes. As needs increase the services increase. A care assessment will determine the level of services an individual needs, and importantly, each resident pays only for the services he or she uses, and not on the basis of their assets or income. No means testing or ACAT assessments Accessing private aged care is surprisingly easy – there is no need for means testing
As well as providing professional care, Seasons Private Aged Care communities offer a host of activities and facilities to enrich the lives of its residents.
or ACAT assessment (as required by nursing homes). Sufficient funds for the initial lease purchase and a modest weekly income (approximately equal to the maximum base pension) is often all that may be required; additionally, if a prospective resident is already receiving government-funded care benefits they
can potentially retain that funding. Affordable and flexible payment options can be tailored to suit the individual’s personalised care plan. Seasons Aged Care - Waterford West www.seasonscare.com.au 1300 506 116

EMBRACING NAPLAN
I
8
n the month of May, around one million Australian school students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will complete annual National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing. Much has been written and reported about the positives and negatives of NAPLAN. So what is it all about, and how does it really benefit students? NAPLAN was developed in 2008 by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to ensure that students nationwide reach appropriate educational standards. The testing is centred round the key areas of reading, writing, spelling and numeracy, and provides a snapshot into how successfully students are grasping these fundamentals of learning. NAPLAN tests are conducted over a period of three days, and the time allocation for each test ranges from forty to sixty-five minutes, according to the relevant year level. Sample tests can be accessed on-line, although many schools advocate familiarising students with the layout and subject areas in the classroom prior to testing.
Analysis and interpretation of NAPLAN results provides a number of opportunities to benefit individual students, schools and communities. Reporting is provided nationally and publicly, so anyone from the everyday Australian to Ministers for Education is able to access data relating to individual schools and states. Ministers can utilise the data to make decisions regarding the best direction for resourcing and funding, and the progress of minority groups such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can be carefully monitored. Changes to educational policies can also be considered. NAPLAN reporting provides parents with a form of comprehensive feedback on their child’s individual performance, which would have been difficult to acquire previously. Information provided includes a comparison to students in the same year group, the national
average and the national minimum standard. Comprehensive reporting including individual school breakdowns can also be viewed at www.myschool.edu.au. Mr Greg Gosling, Principal of Runcorn State School, explains that he utilises NAPLAN results as part of a range of data to assist in determining areas where student improvement and support is required. “Students are supported through differentiated learning. This involves targeted teaching and teacher support for students in the upper two bands through streaming in literacy and numeracy. It also includes targeted support for students who are at or below national minimum standard through teacher aid and Support Teacher Literacy and Numeracy Intervention”, Greg commented. Many parents report that NAPLAN testing is advantageous to their children in that it gives them exposure to a formal system of testing,
which they will doubtlessly be exposed to many times over the course of their lives. It also provides an opportunity for parents and teachers alike to educate children about the importance of remaining calm in potentially stressful situations such as exams, and, above all, to take pride in doing their best. Tony, a Brisbane father of three primary school aged children who will be sitting for NAPLAN tests this year, explained that any personal concerns that his children may find formal testing stressful are outweighed by the benefits it will bring to their education. “Anything that gets the kids back to focussing on the three R’s of reading, writing and arithmetic has to be worthwhile”, Tony commented. Further information regarding NAPLAN, including sample tests for various year levels, can be obtained from www.nap.edu.au.

CAREERS
NURSING A career built on caring for others and working collaboratively with other health professionals in a variety of settings makes nursing a popular and compassionate choice. It was a traditional role for women in times past, but that’s now changed with the greater demand for tertiary qualified, professional nurses. Training for nurses has undergone radical changes. They are no longer learning solely on the job, with a number of options available to get started on their nursing career. Navitas, Health Skills Australia, explain how nurses are more in demand than ever and how to get into this exciting career through a Diploma of Nursing. Making a difference Nursing is a profession that allows you to make a real difference to the health and lives of many people by caring for them, listening to their needs and becoming their advocates. Nursing also presents many opportunities for career progression, travel and diverse experience while caring for people in different settings. As the health care needs of Australians change, a significant proportion of the current workforce retires and our ageing population grows, the demand for qualified nurses is ever-increasing. Few professions can offer you the diversity, excitement and challenges of nursing on a daily basis. The health care sector has also become
Australia’s largest and fastest growing industry. Despite the growth experienced, Australia still faces a shortage of 19,000 nurses, with further growth and demand only expected to outstrip supply. According to the Health Workforce Report from March 2012, the shortage of Enrolled Nurses alone in Australia is predicted to grow to 29,000 by the year 2025. Growing demand for nurses With this growing demand and increasing skills and employment gaps in nursing, Health Skills Australia (HSA) has developed a thorough, practical and hands-on Diploma of Nursing course that delivers work-ready employees to the workforce. This nationally accredited Diploma of Nursing is ideal if you are looking to enter the Nursing profession and gain a qualification that allows you to work as an Enrolled Nurse throughout the country. Students can become Enrolled Nurses in just 18 months, plus have the opportunity to be introduced to employers and gain industry experience through its comprehensive clinical placement program. HSA has worked closely with industry groups and health care professionals to ensure its course meets the needs of the sector and community it serves. And all teaching staff comprises highly qualified and skilled nurses who share their vast experience and knowledge. So if you enjoy helping others and are looking for a career in health care, HSA’s Diploma of Nursing can help you embark on a rewarding career in an industry where demand has never been greater.

BANKING ON YOUR FAMILY’S FUTURE We all want to protect our family’s future. When considering your family’s health, this could be the easiest way to put your mind at ease, writes Sam Lee. Storing stem cells for your family’s future may be the wisest investment you will ever make by ensuring that these vital life building blocks are available for future medical treatment. An initial storage term of up to 25 years is available, and it is generally regarded within the industry that the stem cells could be kept frozen for over 70 years. Stemlife is an Australian company located here in Logan that specialises in the collection and storage of cord blood and tissue stem cells. Chief Executive Officer Peter D’Arcy explains how important the storing of stem cells can be and how reassuring such an investment would be if ever needed.
10
No risk collection and storage “We collect and store umbilical cord stem cells for families in case of future medical need,” Mr D’Arcy says. “We hope these are never needed, but what better insurance policy could there be than to have an exact match for your baby and a potential match for other family members if medical treatment is required in the future.” A baby’s cord blood stem cells have the unique ability to renew themselves and become any type of cell found in blood. Researchers have already successfully transplanted cord blood stem cells in the treatment of over 80 life threatening diseases such as leukaemia, anaemia and immunodeficiency diseases. Researchers are always working to discover other illnesses that stem cells could help
Chief Executive Officer Peter D’Arcy
with. Cord tissue stem cells can also be collected and stored as these stem cells hold the promise of regenerating damaged tissues and organs. Many new trials are underway. Mr D’Arcy says the process of collecting the stem cells is very easy; but the only time they can be collected is immediately following the birth of a baby. “Parents decide to store the stem cells for their family. We do all the work with contacting hospitals and doctors. We then send the clients a collection kit and the doctor or collector (provided at no extra charge) will do the collection,” he says. “Only after the cord has been clamped and cut do we collect the cord blood and tissue. So there is absolutely no risk to mother or baby. We then transfer the product to our laboratory where it is processed and stored.” The total cost for 18 years of cord blood storage is less than $3000, with payment plans available. Over the course of the storage term it equates to less than a cup of coffee a week, which is a small price to pay for the wellness of your family. Informing parents of their options Peter D’Arcy and the Stemlife team are seeking to educate the public as currently less than 1% of Australians are banking their baby’s cord stem cells privately to take advantage of this vital process. It is estimated that less than 20% of parents actually know this is an option at birth. “The greatest challenge we have is education and getting our message out so parents can make informed choices,” he says. “The main aim of our education is to inform parents that they have the choice to use these vital cells to help their own family. Alternatively, if donated they potentially can save someone else in need. Otherwise, it all just ends up as medical waste,” Mr D’Arcy says.

DO CALORIES IN VS CALORIES OUT REALLY COUNT? Part 2 How to eat MORE FOOD to reduce your calorie consumption! Last month we discussed “EPOC” or excess post exercise oxygen consumption. This is when your body goes into overdrive after an intense bout of strenuous exercise, causing your metabolism to speed up for anywhere from 24–48 hours, burning a truckload of body fat to cater for the extra energy demands on the body. This month I will show you how to eat more food to reduce your calorie consumption. Did you know some foods and drinks contain more calories than others? For example, half a kilo of broccoli yields 200 calories but to gain those same 200 calories from a Bailey’s Irish Cream you’d only have to drink 60 ml! Just look at a food hall and it’s clear that people are consuming way more calories than they burn, with the excess being stored as fat. But the majority of calories in those meals are actually in the drinks they’re washing them down with. A standard 660 ml bottle of Coke contains 280 calories and a 660 ml fruit smoothie has around 600 calories. Even that grand-sized cafe latte you drink on the way to work has 180 calories in it. So it is so easy to overdo your daily calorie requirements simply by the drinks you add to your meals.

1. Eat the fruit, don’t drink the fruit juice. Most juices have added sugar, which is simply added calories. Fruit already has sufficient fructose, plus the fibre content will fill you up. 2. Eat the vegetable, don’t drink the vegetable juice. Similar to point 2. 3. Drink the tea or coffee but NOT the cream or sugar 4. Eat more often, anywhere from 3 to 5 or 6 times a day. 5. Drink only water. Multiply your body weight (in kgs) by 0.033 to calculate how much water in litres you ought to be drinking in a day and then divide that figure by 6 to work out how much water to drink with each meal. And remember, half a kilo of broccoli has only 200 calories, so eat your heart out!

– A GIFT YOU GIVE YOURSELF If you’re shying away from meditation because you think it’s some kind of hocus-pocus, maybe it’s time to simply think of it in another way. For thousands of years it wasn’t called meditation; people of faith called it prayer, while others called it daydreaming. Still others didn’t call it anything but felt a great peace come over them when doing simple tasks repetitively. Breathing meditation, prayer walking and praying/meditating with beads such as a Mala or Rosary beads have been a cornerstone of many religions. Special times of day were set aside for these activities. But we don’t need to take up any special religion or chant esoteric mantras to reap the benefits of meditation. Think of it simply as relaxation and you’ll be on your way. Stress tamer We all know that stress is a killer. Trying to juggle kids’ homework plus cook dinner and plan a birthday party all at the same time can be stressful. Add in money worries, car problems, not to mention the in-laws coming to stay next week, and our stress levels can hit danger zone. If we think of stress on a continuum where at one end there’s mental and emotional turmoil and at the other end inner peace, meditation is one way to stop ourselves edging towards the other more destructive end. This can be achieved by simply breathing. Sounds simple and it is; but it works. Make it simple Trying to find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed can admittedly be difficult but is definitely worth seeking. It doesn’t have to be at home; try the local library for a quiet spot, or perhaps a park or your own garden. Find a comfortable chair. Perhaps you’ll need a cushion. Avoid lying down as the temptation to sleep can be overwhelming.
Close your eyes and start with your breath. Don’t try to control it. Just observe it as you breathe through your nostrils and out through your mouth. Don’t be concerned that there’s a lot of chatter in your mind, simply breathe in and out. The flow of breath in and out peacefully is the sole purpose of this meditation. Breathing is meditation. The quiet mind Back to the mind chatter. When a thought comes up it can be quite difficult not to follow it. Have I left the iron on? What will we have for dinner? Those thoughts will still be there once you finish your meditation. So during meditation, when these thoughts pop up, simply return to your breathing – in and out – and let them float by. Don’t get cross with yourself for the thoughts that crop up; return to the breath each time. Eventually your mind will clear. Start with a few minutes a day and build up. Like a muscle, meditation needs to be developed gradually. If you expect to

meditate for an hour or more on your first attempt there’s every chance you’ll fail. Don’t add the stress of perfection to your meditation practice. If you do need a mantra think, start small, move slow. If you stick with it over a period of time, short for some, longer for others, a great feeling of peace and relaxation will eventually be yours. This will need patience, persistence and a degree of selfkindness. Can you give yourself this gift?

NUMEROLOGY with Dawn Alice
HOLIDAY ESCAPES
NUMBERS AND PATTERNS Number one is top priority and premium quality – the number of champions. When we say, ‘number one’, we mean ‘the best’. If you are the only one then you are ‘unique’. The number ‘1’ is a warrior’s spear pertaining to primal force. It is the inception and building block for all other numbers. There is nothing abstract or hidden about number one – it hits the target and goes straight to the point.
Number two is the principle
12 of yin and yang. Dualism is
the theory that in any form of absoluteness there are two independent underlying principles. The notion of polarity can take on several elements, but we’ll merely name a few Yins and Yang’s such as light and dark, sunny and shady, night and day, male and female, and hot and cold.
Number three is the triangle of past, present and future. The triangle of mind, body and spirit is also a symbol of the union of man plus woman and child.
Number four relates to earth. Our home is symbolised by the number four. It takes four sides to construct a square associated with the four walls of a house. We have four seasons, four directions and four elements. There are four phases to the Luna cycle, which are the New Moon, First Quarter Moon, Full Moon and the Last Quarter Moon. Four is the number for building, solid foundations and manifestation. There are four steps to transporting desires: impression, conception, gestation and tangible result.
Number five is the nucleus of all base numbers - 1234 5 6789. Although number one is the beginning and number nine, the completion, it is five that chaperons the most change. It is the intersection towards the second half of a numerology number cycle. The dainty plant bearing fruit demonstrates the fragile disposition of the number five. Flowers on all plants that bear fruit containing seeds have five petals. What patterns would you think relate to the numbers six, seven eight and nine? Look out for Numbers and Patterns Part Two in the near future.

THE NEW CAMPING Stuck for an idea for the school holidays? For an affordable family break a campervan is an easy accommodation and transport option – think Maui or Britz. A self-contained motorhome is a great option for families, making is easier than ever to take the kids to the bush or beach – to spend some time in the great outdoors without some of the usual hassles of camping. For a start, with your home on wheels, you can come and go as you please. Self-catering is a breeze (especially with picky eaters), and you can take any number of games, toys and sports equipment. There’s room for the kids’ pillow or cuddle bunny. You’ll love it too, with less work to do! With a motorhome you won’t have to pitch a tent or gather wood for a fire. You won’t have to boil the billy for a cuppa in the rain. Simply put the jug on while you turn down the sheets for a great night’s sleep. The best part is that you won’t need to dig a hole as there’s a toilet on board – great for the littlies in the middle of the night. There’s no need to stand in a queue at public conveniences either. Simply slip into your own shower at any time that suits.

The kids will love it. With some motorhomes they can sit at the dining table in their seatbelts while you’re up front driving. None of that, “are we there yet Dad?” or having to play endless games of eye-spy. They can entertain themselves, play games, colour in or watch television, while you find your way to your next overnight campsite. The best part of a motorhome holiday is the freedom to go where you want, when you want. Bored in one town? Drive to the next. They’re also a great way to visit out-of-town relatives. If you love to visit your relations but they don’t have the space for your whole family, take your own accommodation and make the family reunion happy and hassle free. A motorhome holiday is an affordable, practical holiday for the family and a fantastic way to enjoy the great outdoors, without the pitfalls of camping. And the kids will love the hidey-hole bunk over the cabin!

tree and is studded with red coloured eggs. Eggs are traditionally associated with rebirth and fertility, which is why they are so closely connected to Easter. Eggs are forbidden in the 40 days of Lent in the led up to Easter. Easter eggs were often decorated with bright colours, none more so than the Faberge eggs. In more modern times Easter eggs were made from sweet things such as sugar and chocolate and only their shape remained as a nod to their deeper meaning. Lamb is a traditional Easter offering, as the sacrificial lamb symbolises the crucifixion of Christ. In Europe Easter coincides with spring and the offering of spring lamb comes onto the market. So whatever your religious beliefs are, or are not, and even if you view Easter as just a good excuse to have four days off work, spare a thought for some of the historical meaning of the food that we eat. Have a Happy and Safe Easter. Bon Appetit!

Regardless of whether we are religious or not, the vast majority of us eat some food that has a connection to a spiritual belief. This is particularly true in the Easter period, where hot cross buns, Easter eggs and eating fish is common among both the non-secular and secular community. The history of Easter is often connected with the Pagan Spring ritual, where early Saxons worshiped the goddess Eostre, after whom Easter was probably named. Easter was based on the rituals of the Northern Hemisphere springtime, with a heavy emphasis on rebirth and fertility. The pagans would worship Eostre with small buns or cakes symbolising fertility, eggs for rebirth and lamb for sacrifice. The cross on top of the buns represented the four seasons and the four quarters of the moon. Some believe it symbolised the wheel of life. The Christians replaced this ancient Pagan meaning with the symbol of the crucifixion. Breads and sweet breads, particularly after a fast or Lent, have played a role in many cultures and are often baked into symbolic shapes. For example, Italian Colomba di Pasqua is a traditional Easter cake that is baked into the shape of a dove. The Greek Tsoureki is a yeasted bread flavoured with the Mahlab ground from the pits of wild cherries or the resin of a specific

Women usually wear tattoos for different reasons to men in that they emotionally connect with their choice of tattoo. They can use tattoos for body confidence issues or to make a statement about their inner strength as well as for memorabilia of lost loved ones. Heidi Wray, a tattoo enthusiast, says, “My sister-in- law and her best friend got the Breast Cancer Ribbon in memory of their best friend who was taken by breast cancer a few years ago. I think that’s a beautiful reason to get one.” Clair Miles also adds that, “Recently, I tattooed three generations – mother, daughter and grandmother. They had been talking about it for some time and heard about our studio. They thought it sounded perfect that they could all experience their tattoos together and be in the same room while taking turns to get their ink.” Group affiliation Before tattooing developed the trendy stylish role it has today, it had a darker side. It has long been used as a distinguishing mark of groups and gangs as well as those in the prison community. Members get tattoos as rites of passage and acceptance as well as to showcase their membership, convictions, personal skills and a record of their own history. The history of tattoos in prisons in Australia dates all the way back to colonial days when those being transported to Australia would be marked with symbols, such as D for deserter, to signify to others their shame. These days prisoners tattoos can be used to intimidate, show race support and group allegiance or to tell their story.
Easier removal One major question stands with why more people are getting tattoos. Perhaps it is because they are no longer a lifelong choice. Tattoos used to be a decision you couldn’t make lightly. They were permanent, and if in a few years that choice gained some wrinkles and lost its colour or meaning, there were few options to remove it. Laser tattoo removal is big business with one salon saying they have more clients than they can accommodate. It’s said that the pain of removal is enough to put anyone off getting one in the first place. So let’s just say, think before you ink.

Tattoos won’t be a fading trend As a powerful form of communication and individualism the tattoo gives people the power to express themselves where the body is seen as a blank canvas for them to create beautiful works of art. Throughout research for this article a very noticeable link appeared connecting people with their tattoos and their significant meanings. While there may be the odd person who had a rough weekend at a buck’s night and got the tattoo of a chicken horse on his lower back (true story), most people put a lot of thought and expression into their body art. It’s clear to see that tattoos won’t be a fading art trend anytime soon.

Both very important subjects as both are handled badly by most businesses. I can’t stress enough that the first person a customer meets is your business, so why have Mr or Ms Grump on the reception desk? Communication is very important and includes listening, and by that I mean active listening not PASSIVE, which most of us seem to use because we are all too busy. A common question is: “Do you really listen? Or do you just wait for your turn to talk.” So remember: • If a customer is talking to you, don’t watch your phone, write an e-mail or even read your e-mails. Face your customer and listen to what they say; take notes and confirm their request. • Don’t listen to people and reply with a story of your own. Your customer is only interested in what he wants and is not interested in your wants and needs. So don’t saddle your customer with stuff he doesn’t want.
