STYLE:

ETERNAL, INDIVIDUAL, AGELESS If you ask ten friends how they define style, you’re sure to get ten different answers. Some will say that style and fashion is all twaddle; who cares if your wardrobe is filled with countless pairs of jeans and t-shirts? But when all is said and done, most of us are conscious of how we look; we just don’t want it to rule our lives, writes Wendy Johnson.

T 4

here’s a famous quote that claims fashions fade; style is eternal. Not content with simply buying whatever is in the shops there are many women and men who have developed and finely tuned their own style (for better or worse). But what is style —how do we know if we have it, and if we don’t, where do we get it? How often have you walked past someone who is a real head-turner no matter their age or gender? There’s a certain way stylish people put together what they wear and the way they walk, talk and smile that exudes confidence. It’s usually those people who have an innate sense of individuality, know what suits them and are not afraid of making a statement that stands out in a crowd. According to a few people in-the-know, the consensus is that style comes down to individuality and that some people naturally have style, while others work at developing their style philosophy. Here four chic women share their definitions of style and agree that confidence has a lot to do with it.

Show your confidence As a dressmaker and stylist, Karen Howes of K4J Designs says that it’s about knowing who you are, dressing appropriately and having confidence in yourself. “Stylish people also know the practical tricks like the best colours for their hair, skin and eye colouring, and the right silhouettes for different body shapes,” Karen says. “Wearing clothes that fit properly and taking the time to present yourself well to the world make all the difference.” Amanda White, proprietor of Willow & Fox at Cleveland, agrees. Amanda stocks an international selection of vintage clothes as well as designer pieces. With a loyal clientele aged from their teens to their eighties, Amanda can be in a vintage clothing shop in Paris and immediately know that an item will suit a particular customer to perfection. “Style for me is a person who is confident enough to be an individual,” Amanda says. “Everyone is beautiful in their own way; it comes down to whether you can dress in a way that accentuates your better parts. I have one girl who comes in and she is over six feet tall. The first time she came into the shop I knew I would have things that she would love, and now when I see something, I know it will suit her to perfection. It’s the people who are confident enough to dress for their own personality that denotes style to me.”

Style statements Karen says that part of being stylish is staying up to date with the world. “If you’re trying to discover or rediscover where you fit in the style game, you need to experiment. There’s nothing wrong with staying current if the current trend is flattering for you. But if you’re going to meet a friend and thinking about who’s going to be better dressed, rather than sharing life’s successes and struggles, you’ve missed the point.” When asked to nominate the most stylish person they know, both Karen and Amanda were in agreement that style is a very personal thing. “A man who likes his suits tailored ‘just so’ is no less stylish than a woman who wears the latest digital print dresses with bold accessories, or an elderly lady whose wardrobe is full of simple classics,” Karen says. “Style definitely evolves as we grow and mature. People go through seasons of being more extroverted, more refined, more business-like then more relaxed. It’s all part of the journey.” With a successful career in graphic design, Kim Bauman says she can picture in her head the styles she’s attracted to and, as a new mum, she needed a creative outlet; so she has taken up sewing. Professional lessons and a new sewing machine means she’s on her way to designing her own clothes that suit her shape and looks. “I find browsing Pinterest and just Googling in general brings up some amazing ideas. I would have to say that I rarely see women on the street who have real individual style. I think there is a lot of scope for women to step away from the factory outlets and develop their own sense of style.” Grooming For Shaaryn Griffiths, who knows a thing or two about style, it’s all about grooming. As an intrepid traveller Shaaryn recently had some ‘me’ time in France and says that for her, Paris and Italy have on the whole the most stylish women and men. “The people in those countries really know how to, apparently, pull it all together effortlessly, with just the right piece of clothing and just the right accessories,” she says. u

COMMUNITY + OUT & ABOUT

ROTARY Earlier this year, the northern region of the Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) loaded and shipped its 750th container as part of the Donations in Kind (DIK) program. For over thirty years this streamlined recycling program has provided developing countries with goods that are vitally useful to them, yet superfluous to various groups and organisations within Australia. It was initiated when former overseas volunteers identified a way to help others by donating goods rather than money. Donations in Kind have facilitated the dispatch of over $43 million worth of aid goods, which would otherwise have gone to landfill. John Paskin, co-ordinator of the northern region program, travelled to Papua New Guinea some years ago and observed dedicated and

Shaaryn says that everything you wear should be well-groomed – don’t say to yourself that no-one will notice that little mark on your shirt. If something needs mending, don’t wear it until it’s repaired. Go to a good hairdresser and get a great haircut. Good grooming is 50% of style. t

Conformity vs individuality Kim has been researching dystopian (futuristic) fashion recently and loves the earthy, industrial feel to it. “It’s very raw and layered, and I find it really interesting. I’d like to find a middle ground between this extreme and everyday fashion,” she says.

skilled professionals working in the educational and health fields with very limited resources. “We cannot meet all of their needs, but every container of health and educational equipment that we send helps these professionals in their endeavour to improve the quality of life of the people in these developing countries”, John says. Containers packed to the rafters Most containers are packed with items including hospital beds and linen, wheelchairs, school desks and chairs. Background work is done to ensure that there is a genuine need for the items donated, and all are in premium condition. Only items that cannot be sourced locally are dispatched so as to not interfere with local industries. So far this year, containers have been shipped to areas including Fiji, Sri Lanka and Solomon Islands. A physiotherapist from Papua New Guinea who recently received seven boxes of equipment through the DIK program stated in a letter of appreciation, “I wish that you could have Style in fashion can mean many things, Shaaryn says, and for a young person it can be the latest funky trends seen in magazines, clubs or on the street. Amanda says, “Who says a floral dress and gingham leggings don’t go together?” But in reality Amanda’s floral dress is an original bought on a vintage clothes buying trip in Paris. She loves colour, good cut and beautiful fabrics. “It doesn’t need to be high-end clothing; sometimes there will be something you pay very little for, but it has a beautiful cut. I really admire older women who step out of the box, not simply always wearing cut-off pants and a t-shirt,” Amanda says. Shaaryn agrees. “There was a woman at the theatre in a long-fitting, strapless, black, sequinned sheath with mesh cover up and black velvet ballet flats and small matt black clutch. What set this woman apart was that she was 80+. She was a head-turner. That is style.” As Kim says, don’t wait for the ‘gurus’ to tell you what to wear. Strike out on your own and make up your own style.

seen the intense excitement displayed by my national staff. Every patient who could walk or hobble crowded around as they were opened. Previously we had nothing but our bare hands and hot packs made from the discarded IV bags filled with water and heated in a saucepan. Sometimes, whilst working in Australia, I have wondered what happened to the donations we gave towards a certain project – I shall wonder no longer. It is a great pity that your Rotarian colleagues and the people who have contributed could not see the overwhelming response from the people here”. Approximately forty containers are dispatched by the northern region of RAWCS each year, and around 1,000 people from all walks of life volunteer their time to make this happen. Known as the “Quiet Achievers” within Rotary, these volunteers spend many hours collecting and sorting goods before they are packed into containers and prepared for shipping. All goods are stored in Durack. Bruce Mills has been an active member of Rotary for almost thirty years and has assumed many roles within the organisation during that time. His reason for being part of the group for so long is simple – “It’s the warm, fuzzy feeling I get from helping people out.” Rotary offers numerous opportunities for people to make a difference in the lives of others. If you would like to become involved in the Donations in Kind program or have goods to donate, go to www.rawcs.com.au for details. YOUR SKIN AND LASERS

FIRST HOME BUYERS

LASERS HAVE MULTIPLE uses in clinics, including the reduction of redness, pigmentation, premature ageing and collagen induction. Unfortunately, people are quickly misled about what can be achieved with lasers and are unaware that other factors impact results. At Integrity Paramedical Skin Practitioners we believe in our clients being fully informed about laser treatment options. Did you know that your skin health vastly affects the benefits of laser treatments? The healthier your skin, the more receptive it is, and the more likely it will have faster recovery. Your practitioner should be able to clearly assess your skin’s health and function, as opposed to simply addressing one problematic area. Lastly, your practitioner needs to have a thorough understanding of skin health, the correct use of the laser machine, the education and aftercare to manage and help achieve your skin goals. Integrity Paramedical Skin Practitioners are committed to delivering safe and effective treatments that will give you peace of mind and the best results for your skin health.

Buying a home is likely to be the biggest purchase you will ever make.In Australia 14.4% of the mortgage market is made up of first home buyers at an average age of 31. The percentage for Queensland is 14.8%. It is a big financial commitment and one that spans over 20 to 30 years of your life, so you want to get it right. There are many factors to consider and it makes sense to get your finances in order before you buy. The best place to start is with your budget. Work out your current costs: car payments, credit cards, groceries, entertainment. Think about consolidating debt, paying out car loans and reducing limits on your credit cards. The more debt you have or the more access to debt the lower the amount you can borrow, and your chances of loan approval are reduced. You also need to establish a savings plan for a deposit. Your lender wants to see a consistent savings history and it shows you can manage home loan repayments, and that you are a good risk. Your mortgage broker will let you know on your current costs just how much you can borrow. Remember, there are other associated costs: lenders mortgage insurance, title searches and transfers, and conveyancing fees. You may also discuss ways to improve your budget and savings plan. That way when your mortgage broker is ready to approach a lender for your home loan, you will be in the best possible financial position.

BUT WHAT IF THE PROPERTY DOESN’T HAVE A PRICE? As a real estate agent I am often asked questions about price: “Come on, you know what the owner wants”; “I don’t want to waste my time if it’s not in my budget”; “What’s the reserve?” Our role as agents is to represent our client, the owner, and establish the best price and conditions achievable in the current market and negotiate an agreeable outcome. Experience has shown me that in a moving market, such as in 2014, there can be too many variables to accurately predict outcomes, at least not to within a few thousand dollars. I have been pleasantly surprised by prices achieved when two or more emotionally involved buyers battle it out, and I have witnessed motivated vendors accept market opinion. Why would anyone pay more or accept less than they initially wanted? In most instances, it is because of research. In the case of owners, their agent will have given them weekly written reports that include useful and constructive buyer feedback and interest levels and other evidence such as recent sales that demonstrate the current market price for their home. Recently, buyers are increasingly likely to be in a competitive situation and will therefore need to provide price and purchasing terms that put them ahead of the other buyers.

When purchasing a product, from a phone to a car, we conduct research so as to be confident that the asking price is realistic. As the purchase of a home or investment property is likely to be one of the largest financial outlays made in your lifetime, it is imperative to conduct thorough research. The resources available to buyers these days are incredible. Real estate websites show what is within our budget range and provide area and property specific sales history and likely suburb growth statistics. And of course we can physically inspect properties to make direct comparisons based on our individual needs. So, to buy confidently, establish your budget, organise your finance with a reputable mortgage broker, talk to local agents, attend open homes, and research your target suburbs and properties online. Then when you recognise value make an informed offer! negative self-image, and develop behavioural problems at home and school. This can be carried throughout adulthood.” Reading and spelling assistance John established Read Spell Succeed to help address this need in the community. He uses the IDL (Indirect Dyslexia Learning) training system to help people who have difficulty reading and spelling, whether that is due to dyslexia or some other cause. The IDL System is very successful because it uses a structured and sequential program that incorporates self-learning at the students’ own pace. It has a multi-sensory approach that uses colours, which allow students to see the text clearly. John says that if five repetitions are normally needed to effect learning, people with dyslexia may need, for example, around 25 repetitions. 80% of lessons are repetition/revision. EDUCATION OF THE GIFTED & TALENTED Experts suggest that around ten per cent of children fall into the gifted category. Therefore, it makes sense that a growing number of Queensland schools are developing specific educational programs to cater for these students, after they are identified through cognitive testing, behavioural observations and school reports. Robertson State School has a history of gifted and talented education development dating back to the 1990s. Principal Margaret Berry believes that gifted children, who exhibit outstanding inherent abilities in one or many subject areas, “need to be recognised for the different way they learn”. The school seeks the best outcomes for gifted children by either extending them within a standard class environment, or placing them in specialised multi-aged classes which cater for all primary year levels. The underlying philosophy is that gifted children thrive when they are grouped with like minds.

Robertson’s Gifted Education Co-ordinator Heidi Isaksen oversees the teaching of gifted education at the school and believes that “gifted children are a special needs group on their own” – a concept which is not generally appreciated. Whilst many assume that gifted students and their parents have an easy road in the educational realm, this is in fact a misconception. Heidi believes that if gifted children are not placed in a learning environment that challenges them appropriately, they can switch off to learning and seriously limit their potential and personal development. Heidi ensures that teachers receive the correct training and development required to cater for gifted learners.

GROUPING G&T STUDENTS TO MAXIMISE LEARNING Holland Park State High School offers a signature Triple E program for gifted and talented students in Years 8 – 10 based on English, maths and science. Again, the benefits of grouping gifted students with like minds is seen as pivotal as it enables the students to explore learning at a much deeper level than otherwise possible. Students are selected for these classes after consideration of school performance, including NAPLAN testing and results obtained in maths and science competitions. Principal Jocelyn Roberts believes that the success of the program is evidenced by the school’s impressive OP results for 2013, which

Holland Park State High School Learning, Respect, Cooperation

included two OP1s and saw 93% of students achieving OP1–15. Jocelyn also believes that “academic results are enhanced by participation in other activities”. This is supported by the tendency for students gaining high OP levels to also be high achievers in the multitude of other excellence programs available at the school, including volleyball and drama.

HLT30212 Certificate III in Non-Emergency Client Transport 10 week qualification or 5 week skill-set course

Enabling people to access their community HLT30212 Certificate III in Non-Emergency Client Transport High profile South Brisbane Community Service TransitCare is partnering with the Queensland Government to build not only more employment opportunities but higher levels of skill within the community sector with their training initiative, writes Samantha Lee In their 20th year of operation, TransitCare’s Community Flyer vehicles are a well-known institution in the Logan and South Brisbane community. The innovative, not-for profit organisation assists the disabled, frail and elderly engage in the broader community. By working to give these isolated people access to services and social interaction they are also enabling a lot more people to live independently at home. TransitCare and the Department of Education, Training and Employment Qld have developed the ‘Ultimate Care Transport’ learning program to offer a Certificate III in Non-Emergency Client Transport in partnership with St John Ambulance (Qld). This Community Learning Program not only produces people who are fully trained and job ready for the current needs of the aged care and disability sectors but also for the future growth expected as part of the National Disability Initiative Scheme (NDIS).

CEO of TransitCare, Louis De Beer, says that with the NDIS set to start soon we will see major changes to the transport sector. “This great training initiative will set a lot of people up for work opportunities in our communities. Through this qualification, which is set to be an industry benchmark, the weight and pressure can be lifted from ambulance services which, in the past and looking to the future, is a huge issue.”

Louis says that the certificate can take participants further with pathways not only in community transport but also into the paramedic industry and to really “hit the road” in different careers. With the Baby Boomers aging it’s a race to get people trained in time for the needs of our community as it gets older. By 2017 there will be five taxpayers to every person over 65, and this number is forecast to really put pressure on the medical industry. “We need people trained, and with our demographics being turned upside down in the next 25 years, we need to take that step now. And that’s why this program is such a necessity,” Louis says. FOUR WAYS GLUTEN SNEAKS INTO YOUR DIET We regularly treat clients with digestive problems. A major part of treatment is following a strict gluten free diet. This helps repair damage to the gut and restores intestinal integrity. But there are ways gluten can sneak into your diet and cause unexplained gastrointestinal upsets or IBD/IBS flare-ups. Below are four common, hidden sources of gluten: 1. Teas and infusions: If you enjoy herbal teas or infusions, read the labels as not all flavourings used in sweeter teas are gluten free. Barley or barley derived products like malt are commonly used to sweeten teas, but barley contains gluten. Also be wary of maltodextrin. While the effect on people with gluten sensitivity is not universal, many, including myself, find maltodextrin triggers immediate gut cramping and bloating. 2. Dates: Often called the energy bar for the Paleo diet, dates contain almost 6 times the protein as apples, 4 times the amount of B vitamins and almost 5 times the magnesium. Unfortunately, dates are commonly dusted with wheat flour to prevent sticking during processing. So check the labels before purchasing.

3. Gravies and sauces: A bottle of simmer sauce or gravy contains many common gluten hiding names. These include: • Thickeners – Some use wheat starch, which contains some gluten. Xanthan gum is also common, which is based on corn, wheat or soy. Like maltodextrin, xanthan gum doesn’t trigger symptoms in all gluten sensitive people. • Colourings – made from a variety of ingredients. Wheat or corn is the common ingredient for caramel colouring. • Glucose syrup – Wheat is one common ingredient used in glucose syrup. As a rule, always assume gravy, stock cubes and sauces contain gluten unless they clearly state gluten free. 4. Pharmaceuticals, multivitamins and supplements: If you are taking protein powders or other sports supplements, you can easily check the food label and do some research. Check for thickeners,

colours and glucose syrups. With multivitamins, relying on labelling is harder as some commonly contain gluten from contaminated oats. The best defence against digestive problems is to be diligent and take the time to read labels carefully. Choose healthy alternatives. Your gut will thank you. ______________________________ Marianne Fernance is the owner of Passion4Health Natural Medicine Centre in Browns Plains. DISCOVER ONE OF THE BEST KEPT HEALTH SECRETS IN THE WORLD WHY TRY CHIROPRACTIC? It’s strange how life is, because there is a simple, safe and effective solution for your health problems today yet many people continue to suffer every day! There are 3 simple truths you need to know about your health before joining any gym/exercise program, calorie controlled diet program or other guru program! - Where does your HEALTH come from? And what controls it? - If you knew how to prevent unwanted health conditions, would you? - If you were offered the chance to increase your health ten-fold, would you take it? The knowledge to these truths can make the difference between a strong, healthy, happy you versus a suffering, depressed and miserable individual. Health problems such as headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/ arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, earwww.southcitybulletin.com.au | May 2014

infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, just to name a few may all result from just one problem, VERTEBRAL SUB-LUX-ATION! Truth #1: You should know that your immune system determines whether or not you become ill or remain healthy. And that it is your Brain and spinal cord and spinal nervous system that actually maintains the health status of your immune system. The simple fact is that spinal vertebrae can lose their normal alignment, which causes the spinal cord nerves to lose their ability to communicate effectively the day-to-day operation of your body. Or in layman’s terms: A bad spine may lead to bad health because of bad nerves. Truth #2: You now know why a person becomes ill. Logic says that if you maintain a healthy spine and nervous system, your body is able to properly perform all daily functions required; thereby, keeping you healthy. Or if you correct a poorly functioning spine, you could reverse your current health status. My friend said, “Chiropractors

make you come in every day and charge you a fortune! I cannot afford that sort of care!” Truth #3: At Beaudesert Road Chiropractic, we understand that not all chiropractors are equal. That is why it is Dr Theo’s goal to make the chiropractic care he provides to not only be affordable to all individuals, but especially for families who would like to keep their family in good health all year around. That’s a complete consultation and examination with all necessary x-rays… the whole lot. This exam could cost you $280 elsewhere. Let’s be clear; we are not trying to seduce you to come and see us with this low start-up fee, only to make it up with higher fees after that. We provide only excellent professional, quality chiropractic care that is affordable for everyone.

BRA FITNESS

Whether you’re into the sexy stuff like Victoria’s Secret or your basic Bonds, it is no surprise that a lot of ladies struggle to find the perfect fit when it comes to bras. So often it’s a case of rushing into a department store, grabbing the size we think is correct and not bothering to try it on. What a big mistake that is. Not only can we get the wrong size but also the wrong cup size. But there’s a lot more to bra fitness than a tape measure. Bra specialist Linda Jobson makes and repairs women’s lingerie, custom-makes bras, and alters and repairs your old favourites. “Comfort is the first thing that comes to my mind, especially when you get older,” Linda

says. “It is of utmost importance. We wear our bras all day every day, and to me they have got to be comfortable,” she says. For ladies who are allergic to synthetic fabric or elastic, Linda’s bras are all lined with 100% cotton is knitted in Australia, and it is possible for her to create a bra without elastic. It’s not spoiling yourself to get a fitted bra as Linda says we have ligaments in the top part of our breasts, and once they get stretched out of shape they won’t ever go back. According to Big Bust Support.com, large breasts can cause back problems, and neck and shoulder pains. Shoulder grooves can be caused from wearing tight bras, the straps dig into the trapezius muscles which runs from the top of the shoulders up the sides of the neck and the back pain comes from the weight of the breasts making you hunch over. Linda especially caters for women with breast challenges. This includes women who have skin allergies and women who have had breast reconstructions or have had a mastectomy. “The beauty is that I know which breast is missing in a mastectomy case. I can make the bra so that the prosthesis can fit into the cup of the bra and the opening is flush against the chest. The prosthesis can’t move around inside the cup,” Linda says.

MY TOP 5 REASONS TO PICK UP A WEIGHT

KID’S SUMMER CAMP

When you hear the term “weight training”, you may think, “bodybuilding and big bulging muscles”. But, ladies … don’t worry … If you’re not injecting yourself with testosterone and/ or steroids, the chances of growing big bulging muscles from lifting heavy weights is ZERO. So what do I mean by “pick up a weight”? It doesn’t have to mean “head off to a gym”. Most people forget that the obvious weight to lift is YOUR OWN BODY. Squats, lunges, pull-ups and push-ups are all great body weight exercises that require you to lift a weight. Here are my top 5 reasons, in no particular order, why EVERYONE aged 35 or more should incorporate some form of weight training regime into their lifestyle. 1. Reduces your risk of Type II Diabetes, heart attack and stroke: There’s a tonne of scientific research available that confirm that resistance training has positive effects on these lifestyle-related diseases. The result: a better quality of life.

12

2. Increases your energy levels: One of the physiological effects weight training has is it speeds up your metabolism, leading to increased energy levels, and a more active and productive day at the office.

= LOTS OF FUN! + BEIJING, SHANGHAI, LI JIANG 3. Reduces your risk of osteoporosis: The only way to maintain the bone mineral density you have laid down up until the age of 35 (and reduce possible fractures from falls) is to place your bones under stress and force them to adapt i.e. lift something heavy. Simply taking calcium doesn’t work because many of today’s processed foods leach calcium from our bones.

MEN ONLY

4. Increases your flexibility: By lifting weights, gravity and the weight force you to move your joints through a greater and gradual range of movement, thereby increasing your flexibility. You’ll be able to do things like get up and down off the toilet without moaning and groaning. 5. Increases your strength: Remember as a 20 year old being able to bend down and pick up the groceries from the back of the car and put them on the bench? A resistance training program that has you gradually lifting something, over time, will help you regain that strength. If you want to discover five more reasons why you should pick up a weight, head over to my blog: http://patrae.com/the-benefits-of-resistancetraining.html Pat Rae Personal Training | Springwood www.prpt.com.au | 0414 654 372

ASIAN DELIGHTS

The students will enjoy the famed natural beauty of Yun Nan province and the wellpreserved old city at Lijiang, which has retained its authentic historic townscape dating back more than 800 years, blending together elements of its ethnic minorities. It was once the hub of trade and a political, cultural and education hotspot in the region. The primary purpose of the camp is cultural development with students enjoying the rare opportunity to meet other students from around the world and make new friends. The camp will allow children to take healthy risks in a safe environment, learn new skills and language, and share in the wonders of the magnificent cultural heritage of China. t

Food in Australia is culturally diverse, with its cues being taken from the myriad of new immigrants coming from all over the world. One of the most influential cuisines on the Australian palate has been what can be broadly described as Asian cuisine. Its influence has metamorphosed from the late 19 th century where, on the goldfields of Victoria, the main ‘new’ cuisine was Chinese, particularly from the Cantonese Province of Kwangtung, based heavily on fresh vegetables, rice, pork, fish and chicken. Fast forward 150 years and the influence from Asian cuisine is undeniable and vast. From the humble Chinese café found in every country town in Australia to the large China town malls in our capital cities, to the fashionable hawker markets popping up around town, to the small and authentic cafés in the suburbs to the franchised offerings in the food halls of major shopping centers, the choice is greater than ever. Asian fusion cuisine

People from over 185 cultures and nationalities come together to shop and eat at the Woodridge Train Station Markets, held on a Sunday morning. Here you can buy those hard to get fresh herbs and specialist vegetables or you can eat from one of the hawker stalls. Next are the large shopping centers like Garden City and the Logan Hyperdome where the food courts have a seemingly never ending array of food outlets. The latest craze is street food, for example the Bahn mi, a roll originating

from Vietnam or the Bing, a street food from China, a type of omelette filled with vegetables and protein. Of course, there is the ever popular sushi and noodles. So when you are looking for a new eating experience, take advantage of our culturally diverse community and support your local restaurants, cafés and take-away. Your taste buds will thank you. Bon Appetit!

Number six illustrates equilateral triangles that are commonly known as the ‘Star of David’. One representation of this hexagram is the spiritual and physical joined together to demonstrate the statement of, “As above, so below”. An interesting thing to note is that most HTML codes which involve colour require six digit codes.

Number seven, which is a heptagon, colours our world through the seven hues of the rainbow arrangement. Seven musical notes take the shape of a keyboard. Seven has always been considered sacred with numerous references in the Christian bible. There are seven days of the week and seven wonders of the modern world.

Like many, my New Year’s resolution was to become fit and healthy. In some areas I’ve followed through, like eating healthier, while I’m still working on other goals, like getting up earlier. But I have found some helpful gadgets to help me achieve my fitness goals. Number eight is auspicious. The continuity of the infinity of the eight is limitlessness. Not only is it perpetual, but it also has the immortal power of two zeroes. Each zero mirrors the yin and yang opposites. A woman’s figure can take on a shape 8 and a spider has eight legs. The geometric shape that has eight sides is known as an octagon.

Number nine connects to our numerology cycle which has nine personal years to complete and then we are ready to begin all over again in a new phrase. A human baby has nine months in the womb preparing for his new life. He is born with nine openings to the body. This baby began from nine twisted threads, which make up the tail of a sperm. It then unites with the egg to form a circle of nine parallel tubes. The egg then takes us back to the zero. In geometry, an enneagram is a nine-pointed geometric figure.
