ADVERTORIAL
Private care in your own home It’s not uncommon that living in your own home as you age is the preferred option; however, Private Aged Care communities can offer a new choice for those seeking a fulfilling life at an affordable price. Private Aged Care communities offer residents security, privacy and dignity, and specialist and personalised care, as well as ensuring couples remain together, under affordable and flexible payment options. In these communities, residents buy and have leasehold title to their own home, as well as access to all levels of personal and nursing care in the privacy of their own home. 4 This means most residents should never have to move again and can stay with their partner. With their own front door and the joy of having visitors, including family, friends and ‘furry’ companions, there’s virtually no difference between Private Aged Care and a resident’s previous home.
No means testing or ACAT assessments
approximately equal to the ‘Maximum Base Pension’, is often all that may be required. Additionally, if a resident is already receiving government funded care benefits before moving to a Private Aged Care community, there is the potential they will retain that funding. The cost of Private Home Care may vary depending on the service provider. It is important to research the fees and any additional charges before enlisting the help of a private home care provider.
All the comforts of home Generally, each private home has its own lounge and dining, one or two bedrooms, bathroom and laundry facilities, as well as private balcony or courtyard. Most kitchens are fully appointed, with ovens, microwaves, cook tops, range hoods and fridges. There are no stairs — ensuring the homes are wheelchair-friendly, also featuring wide access doorways and, in the bathroom, safety grab rails. All homes are also air-conditioned with in-built emergency response systems, monitoring technology and private parking for those who require it.
Planned and emergency care
Accessing Private Aged Care requires no means testing, nor an ACAT assessment that nursing homes require. The financial capacity to fully fund the initial lease purchase, and a modest weekly income
Private Aged Care offers experienced carers who are well trained, trustworthy and sensitive to the needs of your loved one. They can support your loved one to remain independent and comfortable in their home.
Fully qualified and experienced carers are available day and night to provide all levels of care in the privacy of the resident’s home. The services covered in Private Aged Care can be of a clinical nature, including • administering medication • checking wounds • taking blood samples, and • checking vital signs Residents requiring care can choose the level of assistance they require. For many, Private Aged Care means residents pay based only on the services they use; not on the basis of their assets or income. A care assessment will determine the level of care a resident needs, such as: independent living; private short term care; private low or high care; private dementia care; and private palliative care.
A vibrant, social community Staffed by professional carers, Private Aged Care communities generally have consulting rooms for visiting GPs and health professionals. While the community dining room provides home-cooked meals and varied menus, the lifestyle centres include lounge areas, libraries, cinemas, gaming rooms, and tea and coffee facilities. Private Aged Care communities also have active events calendars for residents who still have the capacity and love getting out and about.

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! The south side’s got talent, and the good news is you don’t need to travel all the way into the heart of the City or spend a small fortune to find it. Whether your preference is pub and club bands, live theatre or opera, quality live entertainment is out there – in bucketloads – and most probably at a venue near you, writes Amanda Sheehan.
Live theatre The Sunnybank Theatre has been entertaining Brisbane for almost fifty years. According to General Manager Mr Chris Guyler, the purpose of the theatre is to “provide good quality live theatre in a friendly atmosphere of fun and professionalism, at very affordable prices”. There can be no doubt that the Sunnybank Theatre is doing just that. Each year six shows are produced and performed in a variety of genres including musicals, drama, thrillers, mysteries and comedies. Recent productions have included Holmes and The Ripper, The Sound of Music and Educating Rita. Shows are regularly sold out, with a loyal patronage that comes along regardless of the genre because, according to
Chris, “they know they’re going to get some great entertainment”. Theatre regulars are encouraged to purchase an annual subscription, which provides them with discounted tickets, priority seating and booking options. Currently over 150 patrons avail themselves of this option. In the words of one theatre regular, “I can see a whole year’s worth of fantastic shows at the Sunnybank Theatre for less than the cost of one ticket for a show at the more expensive venues. Plus parking is free and in abundance!” Sarah Mehmet, who played the lead role of Rita in the theatre’s recent production of Educating Rita, knew that acting was a passion she wanted to pursue from the tender age of
seven. She enjoys the exhilaration of performing in front of a live audience, citing theatre as the “extreme sports of acting”. Sarah initially became involved with the Sunnybank Theatre by responding to a call for auditions on the theatre’s website. She believes that live theatre is popular because it engages people’s feelings and cites the interactive nature of this type of performance as a reason why it remains popular with audiences and actors alike. Upcoming productions at the Sunnybank Theatre include Death Trap, ‘Allo ‘Allo and Guys and Dolls.
Fame! For thirty years this year, Fame Theatre Group has been providing an opportunity for students to train in singing, dance and drama. Children can become involved from the age of three, with classes held at Mt Gravatt, Camp Hill and Manly West, along with a number of north side venues. All productions are cast from their student body. Administration Manager Marcia Carroll believes that Fame offers students the
opportunity to develop independence and self-confidence, as well as providing numerous performance opportunities. The school is currently working on a production entitled A Ghost of a Time, and this year the September holiday musical will be Little Red Riding Hood. The end of year production Where in the World is Christmas will tour South East Queensland in November and December for school group bookings. Former Fame students have gone on to experience a range of professional success. Several former students are currently performing in Universal Studios in Japan and Singapore. One former student is currently touring Australia as Peppa Pig, while another is Lachlan the Purple Wiggle. Former students are also currently appearing in the Australian professional productions of Grease, Wicked and Strictly Ballroom. Read more of this article at www.southcitybulletin.com.au

SELLING YOUR PROPERTY THE STELLARIO WAY
GETTING THE RIGHT WORDS FOR YOUR BUSINESS WEBSITE
Why choose Stellario to sell your property? Simple. At Stellario our focus is on you, the client. Not only are our agents here to get you the best price for your property, our processes are structured to develop a working relationship that leaves you with peace of mind, knowing that we are here for you, working to deliver a fantastic result for all parties involved. With our no obligation sign-on form we can organise one of our agents to come out to you and give you a free comprehensive property appraisal. Sometimes the original price you paid for your property may not be the same price your property is worth on today’s market that could go either way - positive or negative. Due to this uncertainty it’s important for you to know the true value of your property by getting an experienced agent who knows the local market well enough to give you a fair price for it. When we have done our ‘foundation’ work and begin the search for a buyer, we don’t rest until the goal is met, channelling our enthusiasm into real tenacity and taking innovative, lateral approaches to selling. This is where we get excited, crafting a new selling approach to each individual house, task in hand and applying unstoppable energy until the job is done to everyone’s satisfaction. Stellario Realty Group is Unique … You have to give us a go to know our real Value!
These days most people look to the internet first for needed products and services. But on average a visitor to your website will only stay for 10 to 20 seconds if nothing grabs their attention! So how to keep them there? Ensure your headings and content contains the unique solutions your ideal customer is looking for and/or the problems you solve. It’s about what’s in it for them, not you. So don’t rave on about you and your history. Examples of problem-centred headlines: “Have termites attacked your home?” “Is back and neck pain preventing you from enjoying life?” Examples of benefits-driven headlines: “Be pain-free and regain your quality of life.” “Long-term, economical termite solutions that are safe, natural and eco-friendly.” Research and use in your content and subtitles the keywords that people type into Google when looking for your type of service. This is called Search Engine Optimisation. Finally, offer a beneficial freebie via an opt-in box; for example, an eBook called 5 Ways to Protect Your Home from White Ants or 5 Simple Exercises to Prevent Back Pain. Include your contact details with hyperlinks back to your website or email address. SKIN HEALTH with Claire Mason
DIABETES AND YOUR SKIN Your skin is the body’s largest organ and performs several important roles in protecting your health. Skin acts as a barrier to protect you from potentially dangerous outside and inside mechanisms of our bodies. Sebaceous glands associated with hair follicles produce the oils and sudoriferous glands produce perspiration that maintains your skin’s natural protective barrier. The nervous system controls both of these glands, and if damage occurs and the skin dries out, small cracks can form, which signifies the barrier has been broken. Moisture from beneath the skin can then dissipate and lead to more cracking, which can increase the risk of infection, dryness and skin discomfort. As we get older, we gradually lose the individual nerve fibres in our body, which means

PROPERTY SETTLEMENTS One of the most sensitive issues when separating is property settlement. Both parties have usually contributed financially and non-financially to the marriage or de facto relationship and want those contributions fairly reflected in any settlement. This is achievable, but other factors need to be taken into consideration as well. For example, the future needs of each party and any special contributions made at the commencement of, and during, the relationship or marriage must also be taken into consideration. It is always best to attempt to negotiate a fair settlement between yourselves to keep the costs of your separation at a minimum. Any agreement reached should be drafted into a legal document and signed by both parties so there is evidence as to what the agreement was and what was transferred between the parties. Parties are not required to attempt to mediate an outcome prior to filing in court if it is only regarding a property settlement. One of the first steps to determining a property matter before the courts is to undertake a mediation either conducted privately or through the courts. Before you attempt to negotiate a fair settlement for yourself, you must seek legal advice as to what you are legally entitled to under the Family Law Act 1975. Should you not do so, you run the risk of reaching an agreement that sees you sell yourself short for your future and that of your children. If you would like to discuss property settlement, why not make an appointment to see Janelle Rollo and discuss what your options are and what you are entitled to. that our skin cannot protect us as well and we are more susceptible to damaging factors, such as dryness. Diabetes may accelerate this loss. Dry Skin Damage to the small blood vessels and nerves common in people with diabetes can cause very dry skin. This can lead to small cracks in the skin. When you have dry skin, over-washing, excessively hot water, exposing your skin to the sun and not moisturising can make the problem worse. To help improve the condition of dry skin: • Use warm water rather than hot water for washing your skin. • Use a pH-balanced cleanser. • Limit the time you spend bathing to prevent washing the natural oils out of your skin. • Moisturise your entire body with a moisturising cream. • Use a hyaluronic acid serum and/cream to
increase the water levels to the cells in your skin. A good moisturiser or home care system does not have to be expensive. A skin practitioner can advise you on suitable products. Dry Eyes, Nose and Mouth In Type 1 Diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks the beta cells in the pancreas and may also attack other parts of the body including the mucous membranes, which can cause dryness problems. If you suffer from: • dry eye area, use a prescribed eye cream morning and evening. • dry lips, use non-petroleum based cream regularly or use your eye cream to help soothe, hydrate and heal. If you are having problems with dryness to the eyes, nose or mouth, talk to your doctor who can offer further advice. For more information on skin health call us. We would love to help!

As the 2014 Co-Captains we have accepted the honour of leading our community through the Mary Ward virtue of sincerity. Sincerity is having the courage to live by truth, show integrity and develop self-acceptance. It is our aim to encourage others to use their gifts purposefully, and to help others in a spirit of gratitude, compassion and hope. We embrace the opportunity of our leadership position and strive to recognise the inherent dignity of each individual. As leaders we are encouraged to accept our flaws, give of our talents and inspire others to seek truth. We are invested in increasing student involvement in all facets of college life and feel this leadership opportunity has granted us the privilege of guiding our community in sincerity, leading by the mantra, “A genuine heart is the place to start.”

Respect, Consideration, Participation, Responsibility, Commitment, Purpose Let me introduce myself. I am Robert Lucas, College Captain and member of the Student Leadership Team of Villanova College together with the College Vice-Captain and Student Council President. The above six words encapsulate what our College is attempting to develop in us as students. In the Middle School the emphasis is on the first three, while in the Senior School the last three are the priorities of development. To me, respect, consideration and participation have that “other-centredness” dimension while responsibility, commitment and purpose have that added individual dimension. When you underpin these values with the Augustinian
values of hospitality, friendship and community, we have the foundation of what we strive to accomplish at Villanova. The above values have helped form me as a person and as a leader. I see leadership as a service to others – I like to lead by example and assist others in achieving their ideas. I believe also that these values help develop true trust and respect between the Student Leadership Team and the student body. A final comment! What do I like about Villa? It’s like coming to a second home as I look forward to attending daily and you never have to say “goodbye” just “see you again soon”.

Springwood cultivates leadership opportunities for students Springwood State High School is an amazing school; there are significant opportunities that lay past the school gates. One of these opportunities is being involved in school leadership, whether it is as a captain or being involved in our committees. There are four major committees at Springwood High that assist in ensuring students can contribute to a strong sense of community: Fundraising, Sport, Arts and Entertainment, and the Environment. These committees include members of the Year 12 Student Council and Year 11 students are welcome to join to support their leadership development. The
school also has student representatives from each year level. These student representative groups run activities and also help out with the Year 12 leadership group. As School Captains, we have learnt a great deal of diplomacy when bringing the year level groups together whilst maintaining our objective – to apply our school values of Respect, Cooperation and Industry along with our vision of “The Highest Expectations”. These values outline the basis for all relationships and we also use these values when performing leadership activities.

Pain Pills Are Not The Answer Drugs may be making everything worse as a study in the UK reports: “The risk is highest for those who take aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol at least every other day to treat either a headache or another condition such as joint pain. The health watchdog NICE says that taking too many of these pills can actually make the brain more sensitive to pain, leaving the sufferer prone to more pain. There’s a time to use pain medications, BUT not before seeking a natural way to correct the CAUSE of the problem! Ask yourself…after taking all these pain medications…maybe for years…are you any better off? Pain Is Not Just ‘Old Age’ Have you had one doctor after another telling you this is just the natural process of the body getting older - that you should expect to have arthritis. Sure, if you don’t take care of your damaged joints now, as you get older they will be worse (which is why you shouldn’t wait any longer to see if I can help you.)
However, old age is not the cause of your arthritis. I’ll venture to say all 360 joints in your body are the same age, yet arthritis and joint degeneration has not affected every one of them – only your previously injured joints that never healed properly. My name is Dr. Andrew Gorman, owner of Andrew Gorman Chiropractic. Over the years, I’ve seen hundreds of people come in suffering with arthritis and leave the office pain free. Here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic… “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.”– Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery
what chiropractic care can do for your arthritis. Just call 3386 0856 and you’ll get my “Arthritis Evaluation” for only $47. • An in-depth consultation about your arthritis where I will listen…really listen. • A complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam to find the “cause” of your problem. • A full set of specialised x-rays to look for joint degeneration (arthritis) and if clinically indicated the x-rays will be bulk billed. • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so I can show you how to fix the problem. I’ll answer all your questions about chiropractic and arthritis pain. The appointment will not take long at all and you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. Call today…Phone 3386 0856 or look us up online at www.springwoodchiropractic. com.au. We are on the corner of Athena Grove & Cinderella Drive in the heart of Springwood.

Manager’s Pick:
One aspect she is immensely passionate about is the organic ranges of products that have come into the market over the last few years. “We are following through with making beauty therapy greener, and this really excites me as I am passionate about giving people the best care possible with the best products available,” she says. Julie-Anne has two main cosmeceutical ranges in her salon – Derma Quest and ASAP – as well as essential oil range, Waterlily. All boast the organic and vegan symbol. She offers a full range of Inika and Emani makeup products, which provide the added benefits of organic and vegan quality, and with a non-comedogenic status they promise to not block pores. “Our skin is an organ and it needs to be able to breath. By using organic products you can not only look after your skin but have great makeup too,” she says. Julie-Anne has also become a stockist for “Changing Habits, Changing Lives” food and health range from the renowned Cyndi O’Meara. Founded in 1998 Cyndi developed a whole food range aimed at healing our bodies through foods and nutrition. Julie-Anne has been an avid believer in these products as she made her own life change 18 months ago and hasn’t looked back, with massive changes to her sleep, skin, energy levels and daily motivation.
“I’ve experienced great results with these products and wanted to share these with my clients. I’m a huge believer that what you put in your body will affect your skin, so getting the best possible skin can start with putting the right foods in your system,” she says. “I especially love the chocolate recipe and actually prefer it over normal chocolate now, it’s just that good! ... And yes…chocolate can be healthy!” She says if we get ourselves out of the diet of processed foods and into the more wholefood diet way of life, not only will our skin be better off but our general wellbeing as well. “We’ve taken on these products to offer our clients all the tools they need for optimal glowing skin, and I really stand behind the benefits,” she says. “If we can offer our clients all the tools they need to have the best skin possible, they will feel fantastic inside and out.” Great believers in ageing gracefully and taking time out for ourselves and our skin, Bella Diamontes offer its clients a huge range of health, skin, beauty services and products. “Our skin can often affect how we feel about ourselves. So if we take care of both the inside and outside of our bodies, we can be a better version of ourselves.” Bella Diamontes Beauty Therapy Shop 1, 71 Springwood Rd, Springwood, QLD 4127 P (07) 3841 1341

Research suggests that on average people change careers three to seven times during the course of their working lives. A change in direction can be precipitated by a variety of circumstances including redundancy, the need for higher income or the desire to pursue a long held passion. Whatever the reason to retrain, the Strategix Training Group offers a variety of courses to enable its students to launch into a new career or fast-track progression within their current field. Strategix is different from other training companies in that it provides not only the skills but the real industry knowledge and experience required to gain employment. Courses are offered at both the Diploma and Certificate levels, in fields including Transport and Logistics, Business and Administration, Community Care, and Warehousing and Storage. Short courses and workshops are also available, and Strategix also provides licensing for trucks and forklifts.

Strategix has its finger firmly on the pulse of industry trends, and is therefore able to respond to skill shortages in various sectors. An aging population has resulted in massive growth in the aged care industry, for example. Strategix is able to address the need for highly trained workers in this area through offering qualifications in Aged Care and Home and Community Care. Upon completion of these courses students are qualified to care for children, young people and the elderly in roles such as respite carer or nursing assistant. Due to its aging workforce, another industry currently experiencing major skills shortages is transport. Strategix is responsible for training over 6,000 people in this sector and has been able to refer many students to employers for consideration for future employment. On average, 60–70% of Strategix graduates successfully obtain employment post training, although this rate is much higher in the area of Transport and Logistics.

Stephanie Crosby of Runcorn State High School prepares for Image Nation…The Sequel
Imagination, creativity and jaw-dropping spectaculars will inspire and enthral audiences at Runcorn State High School’s 2014 Image Nation…The Sequel. Exhibitions, interactive displays and performances will be held throughout the school at the August 22 event, showcasing the school’s creative talents of students from the Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Film, Television, Media, Music and Home Economics departments. Runcorn State High School Arts student Stephanie Crosby performed at the event and will do so again this year. Stephanie described the event as “really impressive, with many great performances throughout the school and amazing displays including huge sculptures with
cool lighting effects, images projected onto buildings, yummy, themed food and students dressed in costumes they made themselves.” Head of the Arts Matthew Stutz said, “This year’s event will be bigger and better, with some really exciting surprises planned! Professional artists are working with our students to produce high quality work. Staff and students are putting in a huge effort to showcase the talented student work with the whole school collaborating to produce the event.” Image Nation… The Sequel begins on August 22 at 4.30pm with guests embarking on a journey of wonderment and discovery throughout the school.
