LIVE YOUR DREAMS WITH A PASSION-BASED BUSINESS Meet the locals who are turning their passions into profit, and loving it! They say that if you choose a job you love you’ll never work a day in your life. Making money doing something we love is something many of us have dreamt of, and reports suggest that a growing number of Australians are pursuing their passions for profit. Amanda Sheehan spoke to some local entrepreneurs who are glad that they took the plunge. Jennifer Horton and her husband Damon threw caution to the wind, “but in a smart way”, when they founded their Haunted Ranch business this year. While expanding her “weird and wacky” collection of all things Halloween, Jennifer identified a niche market when she found the availability and quality of decorative tombstones to be lacking in Australia. The couple had a go at making their own according to their original designs and quality standards, and the Haunted Ranch was born. The business also sells a range of other Halloween props. “I feel like I was meant to do this. It’s in me – it’s part of me. The Haunted Ranch is the perfect way of teaming my passion for Halloween with my creativity”, Jennifer says.
“I didn’t want to look back and regret I hadn’t given it a go.” The Horton’s have already invested hundreds of hours in their business, and their reward comes when they see the positive reaction their displays get from others. “We enjoy other people’s enjoyment”. Damon adds, “There is a thrill and a kick in scaring people, but we’re not into the gruesome side of things. We offer something that appeals to all age groups and endeavour to keep it all lighthearted and fun. Our dream is to make a living doing what we love and make other people happy at the same time”. Jennifer believes the Halloween event is definitely gaining acceptance in Australia and
she hopes the trend continues. “Overseas the focus is on bringing people together to have fun as a community, which means hosting or going to a party.” This Halloween (Friday 31st October), the Haunted Ranch will host a Cemetery Themed Outdoor Display at Ranch Street Tingalpa from 4–9pm, and everyone is invited. Along with their signature tombstones, the display will feature a range of special effects including static and animatronic props, holographic projection and coloured LED lighting. There will be free candy for children, but donations will be taken for the Cerebral Palsy League of Australia. So far the couple are enjoying the ride, and Jennifer says, “It is better to try than do
nothing. I didn’t want to look back when I’m older and regret I hadn’t given it a go”. www. thehauntedranch.com.au
Dance to your own beat
When Lauren Wozencroft launched Vibe Dance Studio four years ago, she had one student on her books. She now boasts an enrolment of 100 and could not be prouder of what she has achieved. Lauren decided to take the leap into business ownership when the studio she was working for closed its doors. She did her research and combined what she found lacking in other dance schools with all the qualities she would look for if she was enrolling her own child into a dance class, to create Vibe. “Establishing the right culture was one of the most important things”, Lauren says. “If I was a parent I would want a dance teacher who is invested in my child’s learning and development as much as I am. It’s very important to me to offer personalised service, and it’s one of the things that sets Vibe apart.”Lauren has always been passionate about dance. “The enjoyment of

dance brings an amazing sense of release and I am passionate about teaching children to be able to experience that too”. Whilst the business has meant lots of hours and hard work, Lauren feels it has definitely all been worthwhile. “My biggest reward is seeing what I have taught my students has sunk in and they are improving each week.” Vibe Dance Studio now teaches 22 different age-appropriate, affordable classes each week at Sunnybank and Algester, including classical ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, acro and hip hop. Lauren describes the decision to start her own business as “ambitious but realistic”. She also recognises the importance of maintaining other part-time work, as the financial challenge in starting a business can be overwhelming. “I am so glad I had the courage to go out on my own. I have made mistakes, but I didn’t let them hold me back and kept on moving forward”. www.vibedancestudio.com.au
Rocks and words: Any passion will do Sometimes a change in life circumstances is the catalyst for identifying and following your passion. Wendy Millgate from Coopers Plains found herself divorced with children to care for and bills to pay. Consultations with a life coach helped her identify her long-held passion for words. She began studying a Diploma in Publishing and five years ago established her own successful editing and writing business. “It’s important for me to be working in a field that makes my heart sing, and where I still have some control over my working hours,” says Wendy www.wendyandwords.com. The founder of an exciting new indoor rock climbing venue, due to open in Macgregor next month, discovered rock climbing at a pivotal time in his life. He learned through the challenge of rock climbing that when you fall down, you get
right back up again. Which is what he did. He says “climbing is a passion that is both mentally and physically challenging. That’s how I fell in love with the sport of climbing.” Now he is giving others the opportunity to enjoy the sport through Crank Indoor Climbing. www.crankclimbing. com.au It seems that any time could be the right time to turn our dreams into reality. If somebody asked you, “What would be your ideal work day?” listen to your answer and start dreaming and planning. But remember one important step: do your research
Do your research before you sink your time and money Robert Gerrish, founder of Australia’s solo and micro business community, Flying Solo, advises those considering following their passion do their research. “Passion is a key element that provides terrific (and important) energy in the start-up phase, but it shouldn’t stop entrepreneurs from ensuring that the business idea is viable. Research need not be complex, but it should be thorough. Get clear on who your customers are going to be and talk to them before you sink all your time and money into your venture”. www.flyingsolo.com.au

BENEFITS OF PROPER PRICING TOO MANY HATS?

When selling your property it may be tempting to put up a higher price to attract that one buyer who may be willing to pay it. But what is essentially happening with this tactic is you are losing potential buyers who would have paid the correct market value for the house. The way to sell your property quickly is by presenting the market value of your home. This will attract the right prospects that can afford the price and don’t expect more or less for their money. Getting a better response from a tailor-made and impacting advertising is also the key to selling your home quickly. Keep in mind that the only goal of advertising your home is to get buyers to make contact to arrange a viewing. Professional photos, description and an impacting price on the listing need to be attractive for them. If the property is priced at the right market value it will most probably attract people who will fear losing out on a good price and will be less likely to make low offers. The better the price the more offers that can be made and the better the outcome on sale day. Speak to Stellario to find out how to price your property to get the best possible price in this booming property market!
Can you be writer, editor, designer & publisher? The old adage is to do what you do well and outsource what you don’t. Anyone can wear an author’s hat if that’s their dream. All it takes is a creative spark, a message to share, personal drive and a computer. If you are writing a non-fiction book for your business, choose a subject you are ‘the expert’ at. Brainstorm with a book coach your core message and book structure. Two heads are better than one. Hone writing skills through writing groups or one-on-one coaching. Plus practice. You can review and re-write multiple times. But you may be too close to the text and see what you thought you wrote, not what you did. A professional objective eye will raise the quality of your book and your credibility. Engage a professional designer for your cover and typesetting. Professional designers know what works for Google search engines and on Amazon. A shonky cover won’t invite anyone to pick up your book. DIY doesn’t work when it comes to business. Finally, self-publish your own book and keep the profits from your hard work. But be guided by experts. Learn about writing, editing and publishing from industry experts and published authors at InHouse Publishing’s Authors Day at Underwood on Nov. 22.

ELDER LAW: PROTECTING THE ELDERLY Elder law is a newer area of law that has developed over recent years. Elder law concerns the treatment of elderly people by those that care for them. It covers domestic violence matters, financial abuse and property matters. Elder law is a very important area of law as it protects the interests of those who are not able to. Examples of the concerns people may have about the elderly include issues such as carers withholding pension payments or medication from the person who they are paid to care for and protect. Other examples are when elderly people are persuaded to transfer their properties to others without paying for that property, as well as taking out high interest equity loans for children or close friends or carers to enable the requesting party to advance their own financial affairs. Indeed, elder law is an area of law which we should all concern ourselves with as part of our community. If you are concerned about the level of care an elderly person is or is not receiving, or financial duress that an elderly person is being subjected to, please do not hesitate to contact our office to discuss the matter. At the Logan Legal Centre we take elder abuse very seriously and will help you and the affected parties work through the problem. LOOKING A LITTLE BEYOND YOUR YEARS? The sun can wreak so much havoc on our skin. We have learned to shun the sun and don sunscreen, but what about the damage the rays leave behind? For example, wrinkles, photo ageing, laxity, rough texture, redness, sun spots, freckles and pigmentation. The good news is that these complexion imperfections do not have to be a permanent facial fixture. There are options. One of the best is chemical exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation or ‘peels’ are widely used in paramedical skin clinics to resurface and encourage the stimulation of collagen and elastin in the skin. The upper layers of the skin are resurfaced, and the new skin underneath remodelled, uncovering a fresh, youthful visage. The effects of sun exposure, hyper pigmentation and fine lines are also reduced dramatically throughout customised chemical
exfoliation. A prescribed home skincare regime is always recommended for healthy cell regeneration, ongoing results and protection. At Integrity Skin Clinic, we focus on your individual needs. There are many ways we can restore your skin to a much healthier condition and help you regain your youthful complexion. We provide a full skin health analysis via clinical facial imaging and offer a professional consultation to suit your lifestyle and budget too. As skin practitioners, we have the potential to rebuild your self esteem and possibly even change your life! Permanent skin damage doesn’t have to be the end of the story. If you learn how to correct the effects of sun damage, you CAN regain your confidence. Call 3849 4111 for your FREE consultation and have the skin you LOVE within 90 days!

COMMUNITY HUB
Locals give life 2 others through story and song Inspiring Australia events on the Southside are providing a platform for locals to share their life stories to empower others and support The Life2Project – to break the cycle of domestic violence. The message is that even if you go through the worst situation, you can make your way back to the top, with a little bit of help. – Wendy Millgate, SCB Editor Fitzy’s Waterford’s al fresco function room came alive on August 28 with 55 Southside women (and one brave gentleman!) celebrating community and human potential. Four local speakers, some a tad nervous, rose to the occasion to share their inspiring stories of how they had moved through life’s challenges to still be here today, and in many cases, to be better for it so that they can now help others. From domestic violence, abuse and homelessness, to mental illness, involuntary hospitalisation and a tumour, these women had faced it all. But this was no pity-party. This was an evening to showcase how everyday women can find an inner strength and grace to find the silver lining in their experiences. Their stories were shared with honesty, humility, a touch of humour and, for some, a spark of spirituality, like Sylvia Morris. Businesswoman, author and poet Sylvia Morris, who is facing the ramifications of Acromegaly, a a long-term treatment tumour, has been able to
find peace through meditation and a positive outlook. “I was always taught to see the bright side of life. I kept saying to myself there’s got to be a reason this is happening. So I just braced for the ride and tried to make sense of it. Then I started meditating and went through a major spiritual awareness.” Sylvia’s poetry moved some audience members to invite her to speak at other events, which in turn inspired Sylvia. One audience member’s reaction helped her see herself in a new light. “I felt so inspired by the speakers and how far they had come, and then I suddenly realised how far I had come on my own journey from domestic violence. For the first time I felt proud of myself.”
The Voice of Candice The Southside’s Candice Skjonnemand, 2014 The Voice contestant, made a special contribution through a sparkly song set that had feet tapping and eventually some women bopping up in the back row to her unique rendition of ‘Unconditional’. She also offered up her own story. When SCB asked Candice why she did that, she said, “I believe that after going through the worst and making my way back up again, I can offer some genuine inspiration to others.” Other uplifting speakers on the night were Tiarnie Vidler, founder of online community “Guided from Within”, and Karen Tyrrell, former teacher and now author and mental health advocate.
Life2Project: breaking the cycle of domestic violence According to Jane, event organiser and founder of Life2Project, this quarterly event is “an evening of sharing with guest speakers who each have a story to inspire individuals, stimulate discussion, create community and make a difference.” It is also a fundraiser for Life2Project. Following her own jurney from domestic violence, Jane Sleight-Leach has created Life2Project as a nourishing ‘tree of support’ for women who have experienced abuse or domestic violence. Its main project is a quarterly retreat – “a vehicle for women to release the past and gain new skills to create a selfempowered life.”
According to a 2005 Personal Safety Survey (Australian Bureau of Statistics), nearly half a million Australian women have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence or sexual assault in the past 12 months. Many women come out of these relationships financially and emotionally impacted. But Jane won’t let finances stop anyone from attending her retreats. Therefore, the retreats are heavily subsidised. Jane believes there is a way forward for everyone, if they are just given the resources and support. In the words of Candice Skjonnemand: “I believe that nobody is ever ‘ruined’ or ‘done’. There is ALWAYS a way back.” And Life2Project is definitely offering hope and a vehicle for women to do just that. For information on the next Inspiring Australian event or Life2Project retreat, contact Jane Sleight-Leach on 0412 200 515. www.life2project.com.au South City Bulletin thanks Candice Skjonnemand for her striking photo on our front cover. Her debut album ‘Becoming an Artist’ is launching in October www.candiceofficial.com.

GOURMET with Suzanne Walker
Passion Fruit Dreaming of working with food? So you are passionate about food and want to open a restaurant, coffee shop or craft beer place? Because of my 36 years of experience in hospitality – a field that I love and know – I sometimes get asked by people who wish to enter the field what do they need to know. My suggestion is to simply get a job in the industry. I often chuckle at the contestants on “Masterchef” who exclaim that it is their lifelong ambition to work in the industry. Or sometimes I hear a person who has spent their life in an office say they have always dreamt of owning a café or restaurant. “Get a job!” I scream at the television, or less loudly at the person in front of me. You do not have to start at a top restaurant; just get your foot in the door, even at a local café. The experience will give you an insight into the reality of hospitality. People’s fantasy often does not equate to the reality of working 80 hours a week for minimum wage and working while your friends are out enjoying themselves. You will need to research and perfect not just glamourous things like recipes and design books, but boring things like food handling skills, cleaning and pest management. But the rewards are great. Your work colleagues become your friends and family. There is a satisfaction about working as part of a team and being appreciated (sometimes) for your efforts. Have you ever wondered why one person can succeed where another person has failed? I think it is passion, which is the ability to stick at something through pain, adversity, hardships and trials. It is passion that allows a person to elevate themselves and their efforts above the ordinary. A wise person once said, “If you do what you love, you will never have to work a day in your life”. Hospitality is above all a service industry and if you enjoy service to others, and can say it’s a passion, then this could be the career for you.

Nothing to see. Everything to hear! Feeling10 years younger. Forgetting I even wear them. Wondering why I waited so long. Marveling at how small they really are. Actively participating in a meeting. Surprising friends by overhearing their whispered conversation.
Whatever you are passionate about, follow it, research it and enjoy a life above the ordinary. As for me? These days I am most passionate about my friends. So here is a Passion Fruit Slice recipe from my dear friend, Gene Mooney.
Passionfruit Slice
Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Mix a cup of self-raising flour with a cup of desiccated coconut, 1/2 cup caster sugar with 125 grams of melted butter. Press into a lined pan and bake for 15 minutes while you make the topping. Beat a can of condensed milk with ½ cup of lemon juice and a 1/3 cup of passionfruit pulp until thick. Pour on top of the base and return to the oven for another 15 minutes. The slice is ready when set. Cool and cut into squares. Bon Appetit !

Destination: Seattle When most people visit the USA they head for Disneyland or Universal Studios in Los Angeles. They may even travel to San Francisco. Seattle, however, seems to be off many tourists’ radar. But Seattle is a truly amazing place. Seattle is located in the state of Washington, on the west coast of the USA. It is about a 2-hour drive south from the Canadian border and about a 14hour drive north of San Francisco. Once arriving in Seattle, your first stop should be the world famous “Space Needle. A number of hotels are located an easy 5-minute walk from the icon, which towers above the surrounding city buildings. Built for the 1962 World’s Fair, an elevator ride to the top of the 160 metre observation deck of the “Space Needle costs about $20 and gives you a fantastic 360-degree view of Seattle. For those lovers of coffee, Seattle is the birthplace of many a coffeehouse, including the world’s biggest coffee chain – Starbucks. In fact, there seems to be a Starbucks on every corner. Starbucks originated at Pike Place Markets, which is a huge bustling hive of quirky shops and vendors selling fresh produce and flowers. It’s great for getting up close and personal with the locals or to buy gifts and souvenirs. The Seattle skyline is known for the opening credits of the TV sitcom “Frasier, with the iconic “Space Needle silhouetted on our screens. The best place to view the city skyline is Kerry Park, which is a 5 to 10 minute drive from the Space Needle. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the light is at its best. Don’t forget your camera! About 30 minutes’ drive north of Seattle is the town of Everett, home to the world’s largest factory – Boeing. The Boeing factory tour is a must. It will take you to where the fleet of Boeing aircraft, including the new 787 “Dreamliner, is assembled. Boeing is like a small city with over 30,000 workers. It has its own fire department, medical centre, power station and security force. When I visited in August, I was amazed at the labyrinth of almost 4

For a different kind of experience, take a Seattle underground tour of the seedy and creepy side of the original CBD of Seattle, which was destroyed by fire in 1889. And of course, we can’t forget the iconic movies made in Seattle such as “Sleepless in Seattle. You can take a boat ride past Tom Hanks’ floating house on Lake Union. The birthplace of Jimmy Hendrix, Nirvana and Foo Fighters, Seattle is a city rich in culture and heritage. If you are planning a trip to the west coast of the USA, don’t miss out on visiting beautiful Seattle. You will definitely fall in love with it.

FITNESS with Pat Rae
Work & Stay Fit Eight years ago I had an epiphany. I changed careers and moved from law enforcement to fitness, a shift that would have a profound effect on my health and my life. You see, back then I felt trapped in the whirlwind merry-go-round that is life, struggling to make ends meet, while missing out on watching my young family grow up. Fast forward eight years and where am I today? I have a thriving and successful personal training business, a young family that I get to see grow up every day. I go to all of their school activities, am heavily involved in their sporting activities, and conduct the school drop-offs and pickups in conjunction with my wife’s work schedule. I am fit and strong and healthier than I have ever been in my life. How did this happen? Was it a fluke? Hell no. It was serious hard work, but the payoff is massive. Take if from someone who’s been there and done that. Staying fit while working can be achieved, but it takes a little discipline, some serious planning and a little luck.
Here are my top five tips to stay fit while working: 1. The biggest key to staying fit while you work is to actually enjoy your career. Far too many people these days are trapped doing a job they absolutely HATE! Find something that earns you a living but you would gladly do for free and you’ll never work a single day in your life. Once you achieve that, all of a sudden your stressed-out job becomes an enjoyable occasion. And we all know that stress is one of the leading causes of obesity today. 2. Create a job you love, if you can’t find one. I am 48 and am doing something that didn’t even exist when I was at school. Chances are your children will end up doing something that currently doesn’t exist either. Robert Kiyosaki wrote, “People don’t get rich by what they do during their work hours; they get rich by what they did in their spare time.” What do you do in your spare time? For me, 8 years ago, I went back to school, learned new skills and created my perfect job, working my perfect working hours.
Once you’ve got your perfect career, you’ll find the following strategies easy to implement. 3. Include exercise in your daily routine. Your training regime needs to be placed high enough on your priority list so that it gets done just like other work-related tasks. If your job has a tendency to create fires that need putting out later in the day, train in the morning. If you start early, train in the evenings. If you can, train at lunch time to break up your day. 4. Drink more water at work. The average 80 kilogram male needs to drink 2.64 litres of water per day without taking into account any fluid loss due to training. By breaking this down into bite (excuse the pun) sized chunks, you’re looking at roughly 500 mls by morning tea then 500 mls again at lunch, afternoon tea and knock-off. The rest can be drunk at breakfast and dinner. 5. Eat your dinner for breakfast or lunch. Most people I work with eat a reasonably healthy dinner. They’re just rubbish at preparing breakfast and lunch. There is nothing wrong with having a dinner at breakfast or lunch time. Cereal companies have programmed us into thinking cereals are a healthy nutritious breakfast – what a crock. Make more than is required at dinner and eat it again the next day. SERIOUS NECK PAIN? It can affect your sleep, your marriage and your job. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally but physically feeling held back from life because your neck hurts and the pain just won’t go away! My name is Dr. Andrew Gorman, owner of Andrew Gorman Chiropractic. Over the years since we’ve opened our door, I’ve seen hundreds of people with neck pain, arm problems and headaches leave the office pain free. Because patients tell me too often…“I only wished I had found you sooner”, I’m running Neck Pain Evaluations for those suffering with neck problems. Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again With my Neck Pain Evaluation, I’ll be able find the problem and then correct it. Think of how you may feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living. Feel tight joints rest, relax, free up. Feel muscles tied in
knots become more supple. Feel strength in your muscles increase. As you begin to see motion returning to your joints, you’re preventing and reducing chances of disability and a crippling future. You’re able to live life like a normal person again, without neck pain -able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends and not have to worry that your pain will hit you at just the wrong time. “Will This Really Work For Me?” A recent scientific study showed chiropractic adjustments outperformed massage treatments in reducing pain. The study concluded that patients with chronic neck pain showed “clinically important improvements from a course of spinal manipulation… The current evidence does not support a similar level of benefit from massage.”– J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2007
In another study comparing acupuncture, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and spinal manipulation found… “After a median intervention period of 30 days, spinal manipulation was the only intervention that achieved statistically significant improvements.” - J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1999 $47 NECK EVALUATION OFFER What does this $47 offer include? Everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation. Just call, make an appointment and here’s what you’ll get… • An in-depth consultation about your neck problems where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A full set of specialised x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms… (NOTE: These will be bulk billed if clinically indicated). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings, so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. So call 3386 0856 today. I may be able to help you live a normal, pain-free life again. We are on the corner of Cinderella Dr and Athena Grove, in the heart of Springwood.

Why do certain people have extra drive and set the bar just that bit higher than others? Strong emotions can arise within all of us regardless of our personalities. Passion and ambition are traits that can be easily recognisable in certain number and astrology influences. Astrology signs such as Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are often identified with initiative, dedication and enthusiasm. These are the fire effects of the zodiac that give a person ‘get-up-and-go’ and the strong desire for prosperity.
The Affluent Number 8 Number 8 with its double zero shape indicate balance and continual flow. To triumph in personal pursuits or business undertakings, you need consistency. A fire sign such as Aries could have a flame in their belly, but without

the blend of organisation and flexibility, excitement can turn into erraticism. An auspicious birthday is the 8th of August, for example. This endows the person with the leadership of Leo and the efficiency of the number eight. Those lucky to be gifted with number eight within their birthdate, even if it is within their year such as 1988, should have good judgement, be goal-oriented and be a realist.
Supremacy of Number One Right up in front is the number one personality. The desire to be first yields an aspiration similar to the number eight, although their ego can get in the way. Leadership skills are unquestionable, but a successful person knows the secret of diplomacy and empathy of human nature, which at times a number one can lack. Numbers such as two, six and nine soften the number one. Achievement does not come through aggression. Attainment is the reward of tractability and respect in accordance with the infinity flow of the number eight. The tarot card Strength numbered eight is a visual example of the masculine number one as represented by the lion. The lady is establishing kindness and the assertive yet gentle nature of
the number eight. The sash she is wearing is illustrated with roses and thorns demonstrating a chain-reaction of truth, integrity, trustworthiness and talents among many other positive attributes. When you have a desire for what is good and just then your world can be transformed – your ambition and passion manifest into a balanced harmony. Interview Hair & Make-up Tips 2/1933 Logan Rd, Upper Mt Gravatt, QLD 4122 P 3349 8300 • M 0432 147 933 www.sonjasbeauty.com.au
First impressions count when it comes to acing a job interview It’s annoying but a reality that a potential employer judges you from the moment they see you. So you need to make sure you present yourself professionally in every way. This includes your hair, nails and makeup. You don’t have to go out and get your hair and makeup done by a stylist every time you go for a job interview. However, it is important to make sure your hair and makeup is neat, tidy and suitable for a corporate type setting.
MAKEUP For a job interview it’s always good to keep makeup to a minimum and go for a more natural look. Here are some tips: Before you do your makeup, apply a small amount of primer to your face. Primer helps your makeup stay on longer. Try Om She Aromatherapy Pure Magic Primer. It contains Vitamin E to help protect and hydrate your skin. Once that’s dried, apply your foundation. Your foundation should be suited to your skin tone. Avoid going too dark or too light because you could end up looking like a Halloween monster. If you’re using a liquid foundation, it’s best to use a moisturised one. Avoid oily foundations because in some cases they can cause pimples and skin irritations. For a natural looking foundation, try Garnier’s BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector. It comes in light and medium. It hydrates the skin and gives you a healthy glow, with an all-day coverage. There are so many different colours of eye shadow out there. You’ve just got to find the ones that suit you. For a job interview try and use neutral colours like brown, white, cream, grey and a light smoke eye. If you like a bit more colour, try gold or a touch of light blue or green. Avoid sparkles, shimmer or that really heavy eye

liner look … You don’t want to look like you’re going for a night out.
HAIR And now for your hair! A big tip is to make sure you wash your hair the night before your interview. You don’t want it to look oily or not sit right in the morning. Your hair style really depends on your personality type and what you like. There are so many different things you can do. 1. Straighten or curl it. 2. Pull it back in a ponytail or to the side. 3. Create a messy bun. For people with longer hair: 4. Do a braid. 5. Put it in a high bun with a wraparound plait. Just avoid going too crazy with the hairstyle. You don’t want your potential employees thinking you look like Edward Scissorhands.

NAILS You may not think about it but the presentation of your nails is important. Make sure you shape and paint your nails before an interview – people do look at them. So you want to make sure they are clean and tidy. Clear nail polish is the way to go. It makes your nails look healthy and shiny and gives them a protective layer. Plus, if you chip them before your interview, no one will see it. Although being successful in a job interview really comes down to your skills and experience, presenting yourself as neat, tidy and professional in hair and makeup plays a big part too. Make a good first impression!

Don’t fight it! The internet and computers are here to stay and are essential learning tools for people of all ages. But there’s a way for kids to use electronics safely and productively. Remember when researching an assignment meant trudging to the library and spending hours searching through books and encyclopaedias? When blackboards and chalk were central to daily class room lessons? The computer revolution has had a profound effect on the way we learn. Research can now be undertaken with a few keystrokes, and the electronic whiteboards that have replaced black boards enable teachers to treat students to a stimulating display of audiovisual learning that was previously unimaginable.

At Springwood State High School, around 50% of students avail themselves of the option to hire laptops for take-home use, and all students have access in daily classes. Principal Julie Ann McCullough says that the main advantage of using laptops as a learning tool is that “they provide access to up-to-date resources and data, which has taken the place of textbooks”. Internet access means that learning can continue well beyond the end of the school day. Students can access tutorials at home and seek help for subject areas in which they are experiencing difficulty by accessing appropriate networks. Jason from Logan regularly connects online with a network of like-minded students
who assist and challenge each other with chemistry and physics. Computer based learning is particularly helpful when educating targeted student groups such as gifted and talented, English as a Second Language, and special needs.
From bubs to grown-ups Computers can assist with learning at any age. Josh from Robertson has been amazed at the speed with which his four-year-old daughter has mastered the basics of reading; all thanks to various programs and apps he has downloaded on the family’s tablet. “The bright colours and cute sounds appeal to children. My daughter has so much fun that she doesn’t realise she is actually learning to read at the same time”. At the other end of the age spectrum, Jan from the Southside is a single parent who has recently obtained her MBA through an open university. “I needed to fit study around my job and my kids. There is no way I could have attended evening lectures. Online study gave me options I would otherwise not have had.”
Managing Risks But internet use also has its disadvantages and the addictive aspect of computers is well documented. Julie Ann McCullough explains that at Springwood
State High School, “we manage the risks very carefully with mandatory filtering systems that block access to a range of inappropriate content”. Coralie, a teacher and parent from Calamvale, believes that parents have an important role to play in ensuring that their children’s internet usage is safe and productive. “Access to and usage of the internet is not the problem, rather the lack of parental control, supervision and sophisticated filtering software is what has resulted in harmful internet usage”. Coralie recommends using filters that can block individual sites, limit times of access and monitor weekly usage.
Tips for safe and productive use of computers: 1. Keep the laptop or computer in a central area of the home. 2. Don’t share usernames or passwords with others. 3. Set clear guidelines regarding use of social networking sites and accessing sites “just for fun” 4. Install filters. 5. Place a written copy of the rules next to the computer. 6. Limit time usage and set a “switch off” time in the evenings.
