COMMUNITY HUB

SOUTHSIDERS WALK AND TALK FOR UNITY Enthusiastic attendance at “The Access Walk Together” event and an Aboriginal Healing Circle indicated that many Southsiders welcome the wide diversity within our community, and that there are positive things to learn, on all counts, writes Wendy Millgate, SCB Editor. A colourful procession of Southsiders representing multiple cultures and faiths, some carrying cultural symbols and welcome signs, walked in unity together in Logan Central last Saturday, 25th October 2014. The Access Walk Together event was organised by Access Community Services in partnership with Logan City Council. Around 200 people strolled, chatted and laughed together as a symbol of unity, respect, equality and friendship. “This was a very colourful event compared to previous years. We tried to encourage new communities to make a cultural contribution; so many people carried cultural items like lanterns and puppets,” said Kenny Dukes, Community Development Manager for Access.

New Aussies grateful Many participants were immigrants or former refugees who used the celebration as an

opportunity to thank Australia for giving them a place to call home. Aussie neighbours along the route joined the walk spontaneously as it passed their house. “Thank you for this event. It’s opportunities like this that make me feel grateful for where I am. I feel supported and welcome,” said one participant. Over twenty-five different cultural and faith communities and organisations were represented on the day. A representative from the Islamic Women’s Association of Queensland (IWAQ) said the event was “a great opportunity for the community to come together and show unity with the ‘if we’re all people, we’re all equal’ message”. Young refugees and students from St Paul’s Primary School spent weeks in the lead up enthusiastically creating colourful puppets and native animal symbols. The walk culminated in

a “Welcome to Logan” celebration, kicked off with a welcome to new refugees by the Nunukal Yagarra Aboriginal Dancers.

An Aboriginal healing circle – a cultural immersion On the same day on the Southside, a more intimate event saw 15 women from various cultural background – Anglo-Saxon Australians, Aboriginals, English, Japanese, German, Korean and Maori – come together to learn a new cultural practice. The gathering was organised by The Women’s Federation for World Peace and the Murrigunyah Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Women. WFWP Qld President, Mamiko Ratley, said the workshop was designed to “introduce the Aboriginal cultural practice of The Healing Circle as a tool to facilitate connection, healing and personal development”.

Aunty Peggy Tidyman, who is the President of the Logan Elders and Murrigunyah A & T Women’s Corp., and a WFWP associate, facilitated the workshop. She immersed the participants in the practice of the Aboriginal Healing Circle by first getting them to remove their shoes in order to “walk in the footsteps of our people”. She then took them outside to learn how to use the four symbols of nature – Fire, Earth, Water and Air – for personal growth and healing. Attendees expressed appreciation at learning and participating in the Aboriginal culture. “I gained more insight and awareness into just how deeply connected the Aboriginal culture is with earth, planet and nature,” said Jane SleightLeach, Logan resident.

Let’s move forward This is the perfect time for Australians to express their solidarity and respect. It is a time to honour each other’s contributions in creating a forwardmoving society. What better way to understand each other than through engagement. Talk to someone from another culture and faith today, and really listen to their story. Talk together and walk together. That’s a good start.

If you’re feeling a little nervous about being seen in your bathers at the beach this summer then you are certainly not alone. Recent surveys suggest that as many as 86% of women, and around 60% of men, are unhappy with their bodies. But as Amanda Sheehan discovered, you can be confident and happy in your own skin whatever your size or shape – at summer time and all year round.

Stop comparing and get real Our body image, or the way we perceive and feel about our bodies, is something we begin to cultivate from an early age. Given that we live in an air-brushed, photo-shopped world it is not surprising that we often succumb to the temptation to compare ourselves with the images of perfection that bombard us from magazine pages and television screens. But making comparisons does our self esteem no favours, and experts suggest that it should be avoided at all costs. So how do we reconcile our own body image with the fact that most of us don’t possess Barbie’s curves or Ken’s muscles? Perhaps being real is more ideal than we give it credit for. Research suggests that consumers are in fact more likely to buy clothing when it is modelled by average sized women, and there

has been increasing consumer support for those stores who have featured models in a range of body sizes. Most women reported that they felt better about their own bodies after seeing size 14 models, which is the dress size of the average Australian woman. Whilst we all like to feel attractive to the opposite sex, we may not be giving our menfolk the credit they deserve when we assume that they are only drawn to women with perfect bodies. In a recent study where a group of men were shown a range of photos of women and asked to rate them according to attractiveness, the majority of men preferred the women of average height and build hands down. They also commented that there is no such thing as the “perfect” body, explaining that a woman who looks like she is enjoying life and is healthy is the most attractive of all.

Talk yourself up instead of down So many of us regularly engage in “fat talk” and complain about perceived faults with our bodies, when we should in fact be celebrating them for being the scientific marvels that they are. Body image expert Dr Phillippa Diedrichs says we should place greater value on the things our bodies can do. “This is the body that gave you

children, that takes you travelling, that lets you love and be loved”, Phillippa says. She explains that developing a good body image is all about “respecting your body, taking care of it and recognising that it is unique and beautiful”. Many of us are also trapped in a cycle of critiquing those around us. Even a comment as simple as “she looks great for her age” reinforces our culture’s tendency to think of beauty as being age specific. Making a conscious effort to compliment others on attributes that speak to the whole person rather than their looks alone makes everyone feel good – “You are glowing today; you look so well!” Kerry, a mother of three teenage daughters from Holland Park realised she needed to abandon her constant critique of her own body when she saw that it was negatively impacting on her daughters. Kerry realised her mistake when she noticed that her youngest daughter was particularly self conscious about wearing her bathers, and she felt responsible. “I had been unknowingly teaching my daughters to be critical rather than confident of their bodies. So I decided to turn the situation around. Now I focus on my good points and I am teaching them to do the same.” uu Page 9

PLANTATION SHUTTERS CAN REDUCE THE HEAT AND YOUR COSTS At a time when families are looking to trim energy costs and people are looking to solar systems to conserve energy, it’s not always Plantation Shutters that are upper-most in the mind of homeowner’s. Not only can Plantation Shutters have the effect of raising the elegance of a room and adding overall value to a property, they can also have a significant impact on your energy bills. Unlike other window coverings such as curtains and blinds, Plantation Shutters offer a barrier to the outside similar in many ways to double glazing. This added barrier on the inside of your windows can help you keep cool in the summer, stay warm in the winter and, as a result, assist in cutting your energy bills. Timber Interiors’ ABS shutters, part of our new technology range, have hollow pockets in the louvres making them thermally resistant and ideal for the harshness of the Queensland climate. With a UV protective coating the shutters will not fade or yellow in the sunlight and will help keep your family cool in the summer and warm and cozy during the winter evenings. WILL I SEE MY CHILDREN FOR CHRISTMAS? School holidays are approaching and for parents who are separated, this can be a stressful time of the year. Are you concerned that the other parent may not allow you to spend time with your children over the holidays? Are you and your former partner arguing about who the children should live or spend time with? Has it been a while since you have seen, spoken to, or spent time with your children? Do you have concerns about the other parent taking the children away from you? Before you can start proceedings in Court about your children, you are required to attend mediation with the other parent and make a genuine effort to try and resolve the matter. An agreement which is in the best interests of the children can then be ratified by the Court by filing an Application for Consent Orders. You may be exempt from mediation if your matter is urgent, there are issues of or risk of child abuse or family violence, a parent cannot effectively participate due to an incapacity or physical remoteness, or your application relates to an alleged contravention of an order made within the last 12 months. It is important and in the best interests of the children for parents to resolve issues about their care and living arrangements as expeditiously and as cost-effectively as possible. BEING THE BEST VERSION OF YOU! Gone are the days of noticing the occasional sexiness on a billboard, magazine and cosmetic counter display. Continual bombardment of images, text and videos of the “perfect” man or the “perfect” woman has increased through the use of social media. The “selfie” cult is proof that glamorous marketing messages of grandiosity and flawlessness are truly becoming a fixation. This barrage of perfectionism can cause confusion as to “whom we should be” or “measure up to,” and create desire to change some aspect of one’s physical appearance—usually hair, nose, lips, breasts, weight, skin, or, particularly in men, body size or musculature—and maybe seek cosmetic surgery or health practitioners to assist change. This practice often creates a lot of inner pressure and turmoil, leaving them finding little satisfaction in anything they try and change, and, left untreated, may lead to anxiety, depressive disorder or even social phobia. While it’s a natural human emotive to desire more, have more, be more and live the dream, are we spending too much time and energy on it? In its extreme this could lead to or worsen a body dysmorphic disorder.

It is an old adage, but beauty does begin from the inside. Adopting a healthier mindset starts with not comparing ourselves to perceived perfection. NO-ONE is perfection. Every one of us has the potential to be the best version of ourselves via healthy choices. Did you know that the healthier you are at a cellular level, the more beautiful you will look, naturally? How do you become a healthy beauty? Start treating yourself like you are your best friend. Give yourself good advice; drink adequate, clean water; eat nutritious foods; get enough fresh air and sunlight; and nourish your skin daily with skin care products specific to your skin condition. Do things that you love and surround yourself with positive people and healthy mentors. We know, because we have proven it time and time again, that a simple change of lifestyle, skin care and treatments can restore your skin to its natural genetic state. Once your skin is glowing, doesn’t it make you feel brighter and more confident? Again, it’s all about healthy choices. This is not changing to someone you’re not! This is all about becoming who YOU really are. Beautiful!

Philippa Diedrichs suggests a simple exercise for those locked into the “self critique” habit – if you’re game. She recommends standing in front of a full-length mirror and having a good look at what you see, ignoring the parts you usually focus on to really see the whole you. Is your hair shiny? Are your eyes a deep blue? Because we’re so focussed on our faults Philippa says we often look past our own beauty. Then put together a list of ten things you like about your body and pin that list to the fridge so that you can refer to regularly. You might be surprised with the results.

Find your style - Which fruit are you? On a cosmetic level, stylists agree that one of the best ways of looking and feeling our best is to develop a unique, personal style that is all our own – and fall in love with it. There are a myriad of methods for unlocking your “best self”. Regardless of whether you are a pear, apple, hourglass or strawberry – the key is to identify your shape and tailor your clothing choices to it. Beauty Glow image and colour consultant Moana Robson believes “There is no reason why every single woman cannot have clothes in their wardrobe that suit their colouring, personality, shape and lifestyle. It is knowing what suits them as an individual that will give women the confidence to let their inner beauty shine.”

Stylists also recommend working with your hairdresser to find a cut that suits your face shape and ensuring your make-up enhances your skin tone. Even something as simple as caring for and maintaining your clothes will give you a boost. It all comes back to making the effort to care about yourself.

Be health conscious Existing on a diet of cabbage soup may help you drop the kilos in time for summer, but looking good isn’t all about the numbers we see on the scales. If we focus instead on nourishing our bodies and enjoying being active, we will begin to feel better about our bodies even before we see any physical change. The warmer weather brings with it a range of activities we can enjoy. Fitness experts suggest we seize the opportunity to enjoy being outdoors and consider taking up an activity we’ve often thought about but never got around to doing this summer, such as swimming in the ocean or signing up for a water aerobics class. According to Personal Trainer Selene Yeager, “exercise gets oxygen rich blood pumping to your brain, which makes you feel better about everything, including yourself”. This summer forget about being perfect. Just be you. Why would you want to be anything else?

SUMMER SAFETY FOR PETS • Don’t leave pets in cars

The summer months can be a stressful time for pets and pet owners with the harsh weather conditions and limited protection we can offer to them. It’s important that pet owners take some preventative steps towards caring for their furry friends this summer.

The RSPCA warns to never, even for a second, leave pets in the car as even with a window cracked the temperature can soar leaving your pet trapped. Dogs can suffer brain damage within 15 minutes of being exposed to heat stroke. So it’s more important than ever with our increasingly hot summers to be extra vigilant of taking our pets home first if we need milk or choosing to leave them at home if plans aren’t set in stone.

• Slip Slop Slap for Fur Skin cancer isn’t just a common ailment amongst us two legged beings but a serious risk to our pets as well. It’s important for dogs with short coats and that may have skin exposed to the sun to be protected by a pet safe sunscreen. Fur will offer protection but not adequately enough to avoid skin cancers on exposed tummy’s or ears.

• What to do for heat stroke

• Water and shade Just like us it’s important to stay out of the sun during peak hours to avoid dehydration, heat stroke and especially for pets who find it harder to breathe such as bulldogs who can’t pant sufficiently. Take the time to look at your pet’s environment. Is there sufficient shade and places to stay cool with adequate water if they are an outside pet? Or if they live inside is it cool enough through the day if you leave them alone? These simple checks for your pets can save lives. If it’s too hot for you then it will be much too hot for your pets.

Keeping sufficient water available may seem like a basic rule, but in the hotter months our pets will drink more. Therefore, providing extra water or checking their bowls more regularly will mean our pets are properly hydrated throughout summer.

If you notice your pet is suffering from heat stroke it’s important not to attempt to put iced water or submerge them as they can go into shock. Instead, moving them to a cool, preferably airconditioned room and placing a wet towel over their body while you make arrangement to get them to the vet is their best chance. Keeping an eye on our pets has never been more important. With these simple tips we can all ensure the safety of our beloved furry companions.

SKIN CONFIDENCE Restore Your Skin Integrity Our skin is the part of our body that we present to the world the most. It’s therefore closely linked to feeling good – our self-esteem and confidence levels. Claire Mason, Director of Integrity Paramedical Skin Practitioners, Upper Mt Gravatt, knows all too well the “direct correlation” between looking good and feeling good. In her early twenties Claire suffered from severe acne and felt so depressed and self-conscious about her skin condition that she would not leave the house most weekends. “It kept me from moving forward in life.” After a two year journey, Claire found the solution in scientific, holistic skin care methods and focussing on her health. She progressively felt more confident and could finally enjoy being around people. “My new confidence flowed throughout my personal and professional life, and I could begin to focus on what I wanted for the future.” So profound was Claire’s experience that she left nursing to work in the skin care industry 15 years ago. In 2010 she established her multi-award winning clinic, Integrity, to “bridge into a new realm of highly effective, holistic and sciencebacked skin care and services.”

Healthy skin is beautiful skin When your skin is healthy and vibrant, being at its best at a cellular level, you will feel self-assured and ready to face the world around you. Pervading skin issues like redness, lesions, lines, acne, skin

tags, blackheads, rashes, scars and premature ageing can have the opposite effect. The long-term solutions to these issues, according to Claire Mason, are not in focussing on the perceived beauty of your skin, covering up or quick fixes. Rather it’s about restoring the health of your skin to its natural genetic state at a cellular level, to bring out the real you. The flow-on effect is healthy, “happy” skin, with you looking and feeling your best. Claire says, “You are all right as you are; be healthy and well, and from a place of health your skin, and the whole ‘you’, will shine.” Integrity is invested in long-term solutions to improve their clients’ skin health. Their track record of success is so strong that they can confidently offer every client a 100% Money Back Guarantee. With Claire and her team of licensed paramedical skin and laser practitioners, who are qualified to operate sophisticated medical imaging equipment and offer prescription-only skin treatment products, you will be taken on a journey. This isn’t just a skin care journey – but a journey of wellbeing.

Detailed, sophisticated analysis The journey begins with a full detailed skin analysis, including sophisticated medical imaging with multi-spectral lighting, which maps out the areas and layers of your skin, looking at a range of factors. The resultant Visia Skin Analysis Report is a very professional, accurate diagnosis that sets a

base line. This enables Integrity to track change over a period of time. This means clients can enthusiastically observe the changes occurring in their skin, not only in the bathroom mirror but at a cellular level through the photographic images. Along with years of practical experience, this scientific, proven method of diagnosis is much more than a confidence booster. It’s also a tool for Integrity’s paramedical team members to educate you on your skin. You’ll learn not only what needs improvement, but how your skin got to its present condition.

Targeted prescription & treatment plan These diagnostic tools, combined with thousands of hours’ of ongoing professional study by each practitioner, enables Integrity to provide appropriate and targeted solutions to restore the health and function of your skin. A full, prescribed treatment plan is drawn up, which takes into consideration your personal factors, like budget and allergies, and your long-term goals. This is holistic science at its best, which is delivered with empathy and respect all the way. It’s about you having a positive experience, with people you can trust. Many clients come through the Integrity journey with a renewed vigour for life, perhaps from newfound confidence postdivorce, or finally, after years of acne scarring, being excited at all the new possibilities. The team at Integrity are passionate about you and your skin and will be celebrating your successes with you.

HOLIDAY ESCAPES with Wayne Budge

TRAVEL INSURANCE! GET IT! When you plan to go on that well-earned holiday or trip, the last thing on your mind is not being able to make it, or something happening while you’re away. Let’s face it; nobody books flights, accommodation, transfers and tours with the knowledge that they’re not going to be there! As for me, it’s almost a given that when I plan to travel, something happens either before I go or when I’m traveling. They say things come in threes! On one occasion my wife and I were going overseas, and a week before we left, I had a heart attack and ended up in hospital. Then on a second occasion, my wife and I went to Los Angeles for a trip that was only going to last seven days. Three days into the trip I had a phone call letting me know that a family emergency had come up and that we needed to get back home ASAP. Third time lucky? Nope. Three days before we were again heading to the USA, I ended up in hospital having emergency surgery. Needless to say, I didn’t quite make the flight either!

Travel insurance gives peace of mind

12

What helped ease the pain of these dramas? The fact that I had taken out travel insurance. One doesn’t plan to get sick before or while travelling. But it if something does happen, there is a certain peace of mind that comes with knowing that you’re covered.

A cruise, or airfares, accommodation, transfers and sightseeing don’t come cheap when it’s all added up. You wouldn’t buy a car or house without taking out insurance; so why would you risk not taking out travel insurance? Things generally go wrong when you least expect it. One lady who disembarked at a port while on a cruise, tripped and broke her leg while walking around town and ended up in a Middle Eastern hospital for a couple of weeks. That’s a very expensive “holiday” if you don’t have travel insurance. A trip to a doctor’s surgery in the USA for a sore throat alone set me back about $250! All he did was put a paddle pop stick in my mouth and tell me to say “AAHHH.”

There are many types of policies. There are basic policies that cover you for your gadgets, right up to quite comprehensive policies that will cover you for medical evacuation should the need arise. Obviously, the costs of the policies vary depending on what you want covered, where you go and how long you go for.

Types of cover – read the fine print

Read the fine print of your travel policy or ask your agent. Some policies may not cover cancelled or missed flights and some policies may only cover you for luggage or items such as laptops or cameras up to a certain value. Your policy might be named “Comprehensive”; however, you really need to look at what it really covers. Hopes are that you will come back in one piece with all your luggage and souvenirs. But really, hoping is not good enough. You wouldn’t drive down the road with your new car without insurance, would you? Remember, without your travel agent and travel insurance, you’re on your own!

FOOD FADDISM Each year as the weather turns warm, people begin to think of what their body will look like at the beach. Each year with the first bout of hot weather everyone stops eating. It is a terrible time for restaurants and cafes. This phenomenon lasts for three days and then on the fourth day everyone realises that this can’t be sustained and starts eating again. It happens every year. It is as is every year we drift through winter, comforted by an extra mint slice or another cup of coffee, and suddenly wake up with the first over 30 degree day. Just as the weather creates a drastic reaction to the intake of food, some people turn to drastic diets in order to rid themselves of the unwanted kilos. There are lots of eating fads around: Paleo, gluten free, vegan, food miles, Atkins, sugar free, fat free or dairy free.

Food Fads was first described by McBean and Speckman in the 1974 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition as simple, catchy diets that focus on a single aspect of eating. They broke the fads down into the following three categories: 1. A particular food or food group is exaggerated and purported to cure specific diseases 2. Foods are eliminated from an individual’s diet because they are viewed as harmful 3. An emphasis is placed on eating certain foods to express a particular lifestyle

Anecdotal evidence Many of the food fads rely on anecdotal evidence rather than any real clinical trials. They appeal to people looking for a quick and easy way to lose weight rather than making the effort to change their food intake portions and exercise on a lifelong basis. The most serious problem, in their view, with food faddism is the suggestion of the individual to be his own diagnostician and physician. There is a lot of evidence to support the food triangle, the use of unprocessed fresh food, to eat what is in season and grown locally (as fresh is best) and eat a range of food in moderate proportions. Combine moderate eating with moderate daily exercise and you are well on your way to being fit and healthy.

A fantastic summer balanced summer meal is the Nicoise Salad.

NICOISE SALAD Blanch come small potatoes and some green beans until done, and boil an egg for three minutes. Sear a portion of salmon or tuna to your preference of doneness. Toss the cooled, blanched potatoes and beans with some Kalamata olives and a dressing of olive oil and apple cider vinegar prepared with a ratio of one third to two third proportions. Place the potato olive and bean salad on a plate,

topped with the fish and the quartered boiled egg. Add half cherry tomatoes if you wish. Bon Appetit.

FITNESS with Pat Rae

WHAT’S THE BEST EXERCISE REGIME? I reckon I get asked this question twice a week. Is cross fit better than weights? Is weight training better than running? I walk, is that enough? Is yoga good for me? So here’s my take on all of these questions. We live in a society where 21st technology has taken over our need to actually move anymore. If you worked it out, I bet you could remain stationary and in the sitting or lying position your entire waking day. Let’s see how. You wake up at 6.30am and after a quick shower you walk to the kitchen and grab a quick coffee before jumping in the car and driving to work, where you plonk yourself down behind your computer and remain there till knock off. Then you jump back in your

Get outside

car, drive home, have dinner (sitting down again) before retiring to the couch to watch some TV before heading to bed about 10.30pm. Sound about right?

Aussies sit too much If that’s your day then clearly you’re not moving enough. In fact, statistics show that a vast majority of Australians spend up to 14 hours of their waking day sitting down. However, you can’t just leap off the cliff and

go from doing nothing to jumping into a full-on program of six days a week weight training. It needs to be planned, precise and tailor designed. So here’s my take on exercise. If you’re currently doing nothing, do something, anything – anything you like. Anything that you know you’ll keep doing for more than 21 weeks consecutively. You see it takes 21 consecutive weeks of doing something for it to become an ingrained habit. However, the two keys here are CONSECUTIVE and the other is INGRAINED.

Even if you don’t like exercising, simply getting outside can be a great way to start. We live in one of the most exercise friendly environments in the western world, so just get outside. If you’re doing nothing, add a short 10 minute walk to your daily routine and slowly grow that to 45 mins 3–5 times a week over a 5–6 week period. If you walk daily, you may benefit from doing some weight training to strengthen joints, ligaments and tendons. If you like to run, how about upping the intensity with some sprint sessions? If you spend all your time lifting weights, how about trying a yoga class? You’ll definitely benefit from the added flexibility. In my 25 years as a fit pro, I’ve seen fad exercise regimes come and go. From aerobics with bright lycra in the 70s to 90s, through to cross fit today. They all work for some people and do harm to others. The trick is to figure out which works best FOR YOU! There is no exercise that is good or bad, right or wrong; there’s only something different. The question you really need to ask yourself is does this form of exercise move me closer towards my goals or further away? Pat Rae Personal Training Springwood | Mobile 0414 654 372 www.prpt.com.au

ALTERNATIVE HEALTH PRACTICES Tapping, testing and needles Alternative therapies are growing in popularity. While these practices seem ‘new’ to us in the West and arouse suspicion in some, in the East modalities like acupuncture have been around for thousands of years. Generally, alternative health practices are based on the idea that what happens in your body is holistically connected to, and an outworking of, what is happening in your emotions, thoughts, and particularly in your subconscious. Conventional Western health practices tend to deal primarily with the physical symptoms – though not always. Many doctors now are incorporating a blend of both. If you want to understand yourself better and discover underlying causes of issues in your life then here are a few alternative modalities that are easily accessible and worth experiencing for yourself.

Kinesiology (Muscle Testing) This is a practice that you really should experience! It can apply to physical conditions, but is not limited to them, as it also works on mental, emotional and subconscious patterns

or issues too. Using simple muscle testing, a Kinesiologist “speaks” with your body and determines the source of pain, traumas, blockages or other disruptions. This could be something that happened to you many years ago, but has silently affected your behaviour and health ever since. You would be amazed at some of the things that come up in a Kinesiology session – incidents long forgotten. You don’t need to have a particular issue to work on – the process will identify the main issue at present.

Acupuncture Acupuncture is one of many modalities developed over centuries in the Chinese Daoist tradition. It springs from intricate, age-old understandings of how energy works, both in the Cosmos and in the ‘microcosms’ of our bodies. Acupuncture recognises the meridians (lines) of energy which flow within the body and which support and regulate the function of each different organ or internal system. When an acupuncturist sticks a needle in you, they are literally pinpointing and interacting with your energy system to stimulate, correct and balance

your body’s overall functioning. Acupuncture is quite popular as an alternative treatment for pain relief.

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) – “Tapping” TFT was developed by a psychotherapist with 40 years of practice, who was disillusioned at the approximate 15% success rate that therapy could claim. He combined knowledge from several modalities, including acupuncture, and found a way to clear away most types of “distress” by tapping on meridian points in a defined sequence, while holding the condition firmly in mind. This method is like bringing up a computer file and hitting the delete button. Many who use this modality report shifting

intense emotions, traumas and even pain in minutes and the modality is said to have an 85% or higher success rate. Some report intense emotions and even pain shifting in minutes.

EFT is a variation of TFT. Let’s face it – we all have “stuff” to deal with in life. We think the cure comes from ‘out there’ and often forget to look within ourselves for the cause. I have seen these and other therapies make incredible differences in people’s lives. Why not investigate a little and experience one or more? You never know, you may even strike a treasure or two when digging around inside yourself. Helen M. PLAYING GOLF WITH

BACK PAIN?

Is your back pain ruining your golf game? It starts out as just a twinge, but by the last 5 holes it becomes unbearable. You’re hesitant to really swing that new driver for all it’s worth – fearing that you’ll injure your back even worse. Or maybe you’ve had to stop playing golf completely because your back, neck or shoulder pain and sciatica are so bad. Sure, you can numb things if you take enough pain killers or some other pill. But the real problem is while you play through all “numbed up”, you are definitely injuring your back even more....without knowing it. Do any of these conditions affect your golf game? • Back pain • Sciatica • Disc bulging/herniations • Muscle spasms • Lumbar facet syndrome • Pinched nerves • Leg weakness Friends May Tell You Back Pain Comes From a Bad Swing...They’re Wrong! If your drives are getting shorter and shorter and your putts less smooth, it has more to do with your back than your swing. Studies show that about one-third of touring PGA and LPGA players are playing with back pain right now. These pros have the best swing mechanics in the world, yet still have back pain!

My name is Dr. Andrew Gorman, owner of Andrew Gorman Chiropractic. Since we’ve opened the doors, we’ve helped hundreds of golfer’s in the area feel better, return to the course and hit longer, straighter shots. Because patients tell me too often… “I only wished I had found you sooner” I decided to do something about it and see if I can help you. Just call 3386 0856 and here’s what you’ll get… • An in-depth consultation about your health where I will listen…really listen. • A complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam to find the cause of your problem. • A computerized postural assessment and report. • A full set of specialized x-rays to look for misalignments, bad posture, and joint degeneration… (NOTE: These x-rays will be bulkbilled where clinically indicated). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can map out your plan to better health.

To take me up on this $47 Golf Exam, you must call 3386 0856.

In the 21st century as we know it, the engagement ring is a symbol of the love and devotion between couples who intend to marry. The diamond and other gems have come to represent the coming together of couples, and there is a massive industry in engagement rings and choosing the right one for the right woman. But where did the concept of the engagement ring come from?

Historical engagement Engagement rings can be dated back as far as caveman times when the man would tie grass around his partners fingers, waist and wrists in order to show others that she was committed to just him. The Egyptians also used rings on the third finger of the left hand as the veins run directly to the heart. The first documented use of the engagement ring came in 1477 by the Archduke Maximilian who gave a diamond ring to his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy. During the Renaissance, the engagement ring became more elaborately decorated then widely used by the Victorians who romanticised the concept. Up until now the diamond was a rare and very expensive gem. So many other gemstones were used such as sapphires and emeralds until a diamond mine was found in Africa. After this the diamond became more commonly used in engagement rings, and to this day the diamond engagement ring is the essence of the power of love. The “diamonds are forever” slogan has been deeply engrained within our society. The comparison of a diamond that lasts forever and a marriage that last forever means that the diamond engagement ring has become the symbolism for marriage.

Not only diamonds will do While the diamond is the quintessential symbol of love the marriage, other gem stones have recently become more popular. Sapphires and emeralds have made a comeback and can be

seen on fingers such as Duchess Katherine’s and even in Sex and the City when Big gave Carry a black diamond. Whatever style of engagement ring you choose, just make sure that it resonates with both of you and keep to your budget. You want that ring to symbolise love and a happy future and not end up being a chain around your neck in the shape of a credit card bill accruing interest. Remember, the most important thing is the commitment you are making with that ring, with the promise of a lifetime together. But hey, if you’ve got the budget, get that big sparkler! PRETTY SUMMER TOOTSIES Sobidah is big on separates and all cotton!

Whether you are getting ready for a wedding or function, in need of some pampering or catching up with the girls, getting a pedicure may be just what your feet ordered, writes Samantha Lee. It all started with the Egyptians Pedicures are an old world ritual believed to have originated in Ancient Egypt where the Pharaohs would get foot and leg massages as well as painted toes from their servants. This ancient ritual has followed through till today where getting a pedicure is used to unwind after a long week or get ready for an event. Pedicures are great for not only the relaxation factor, but also for good foot health. Removing all the dead skin by using pumice stones and other equipment, followed by a relaxing massage with essential oils, will truly bring your feet back to life. While going to a pedicurist is the ideal way to rejuvenate your tired feet, sometimes it’s not always practical and you may need to do a home DIY job. Spending time pampering yourself is essential in our busy lives, so we can unwind. Doing doing a home pedicure is one great way to do this.

DIY Pedicure • Step one is a long soak to relax those feet and soften all the skin in preparation for exfoliation. You can also add essentials oils to the water for extra luxury. • Exfoliate your feet. You can buy a luxurious exfoliate with granules or you can even use a home remedy if you haven’t been to the shop to buy a foot exfoliator. It’s as easy as 1 part oil (coconut, olive, baby) and 2 parts sugar or salt (sugar is less of an irritant). You can add essential oils to the mix if you want it to smell heavenly, and then simply apply to dry skin and massage. Focus on the trouble spots then once you are finished, rinse off with warm water. • Now it’s time to break out the pumice stone and gently work away the lumps and bumps. • Clip and file your toenails down while ensuring you file in a curve to avoid ingrown nails.

Shop 16 The Village SC. 1932 Logan Rd. Upper Mt Gravatt next door to Southside Toyota

P. 3849 7112 | www.sobidah.com

• Massage your feet with a moisture rich moisturiser, focusing on your heels and toes. • Finally, it’s time to choose a shade of nail polish. This summer it’s all about bright vibrant colours like hot pink and purple and even orange. Start with a base coat then add two layers of your chosen colour, followed by a top coat.

Be Pampered While a home pedicure is an easy option for some, nothing really beats having someone else do the work for you while you read a magazine and listen to your favourite songs. Having that time out can be just as relaxing as the pedicure itself. Since we are coming into sandal season, it’s important we get our feet looking pretty and feeling healthy so we can put our best foot forward and feel fantastic. By keeping up with regular foot care, whether you go to a foot salon or do a DIY, it’s important to keep up the ritual of looking after the most used and abused section of our bodies.

BUDDIES IN; BULLYING OUT If your child is one of the 20 per cent who reportedly experiences bullying at school, you will understand the unhappiness it can bring to children and their families. Experts agree that bullying can have a devastating effect on a child’s self esteem and be detrimental to their learning, and for this reason many schools are implementing specific anti-bullying strategies outside of the usual behaviour code. Building good relationships within a genuinely caring school community appears to be a key element in reducing the extent of bullying which occurs in our schools. According to bullying expert Professor Ken Rigby, schools can adopt a proactive stance against bullying by “promoting among students co-operative and pro-social ways of thinking and behaving”.

Forging friendships breaks the cycle According to Karen Tyrell, author of the Stop the Bully, initiatives such as the “Buddy Bench” can help to break the bullying cycle by building friendships. “Loners are often singled out and bullied, but friendships build self-esteem and improve confidence,” Karen explains. Karen also asserts that bullies are usually damaged individuals, and by demonising them we only worsen the situation. She explains that the cycle can only be broken with empathy for the both the victim and the bully alike. Karen provides the following anti-bullying strategies for children.

Anti-Bullying strategies 1. Know what bullying is so you can identify it. 2. Build your self-confidence by pursing a hobby you are good at i.e. sport. 3. Try ignoring the bully by walking away. 4. Report bullying: tell your parents and teachers - bullying is a community problem.

Bethania’s Buddy Bench helps lonely children In this vein, Charlie Shanks, a year two student from Bethania Lutheran School, recently devised an innovative yet simple way to help lonely children who have difficulty finding friends to interact with in the playground. His idea was to install a “Buddy Bench”, which could serve as a meeting point for children. At a school ceremony attended by Mr Michael Latter MP in early September, The “Buddy Bench” was “opened” and the school community stood together to demonstrate that bullying is not acceptable. Students planted pinwheels as a

sign of their commitment against bullying in the school’s Peace Garden, and in an address to the school, Charlie explained how the “Buddy Bench” operates. “If you are feeling lonely and you don’t have anything to do you can go to the Bench and the idea is that someone will come and ask if you want to play or talk. If two people are sitting at the bench they can ask each other if they want to play,” he said, emphasising that

the bench was not to be used for merely hanging out, but exists “to help our friends.” Of the Bench’s impact over the past few months, Kathy Layet, a school spokesperson, reports, “the students love the bench. I’ve seen it in use a number of times with students helping and caring for each other. It’s nice to see students showing compassion towards those who feel left out and alone”.

5. Talk firmly to the bully, but do not argue. Say, “Stop I don’t like that,” and then remove yourself from the situation. 6. As a community we need to help kids who are the victims AND help the bullies too. This will break the cycle. FROM TAPPING TOES TO DIRTY HANDS

After a phone enquiry, a tour of the facility, some serious consideration and just enough hard work, Mike has recently secured an apprenticeship with Qantas through the Airline Academy of Australia. In Mike’s words “this has been the stepping stone to the greatest career I could’ve hoped for!” “The staff were great! They’d help you when you needed help and they’d go out of their way to make sure you could achieve the best. Without them I wouldn’t have made it this far,” Mike commented. Mike now says he is glad his aunt encouraged him to call after seeing the ad. His advice to others thinking about getting into the field is clear – “There will be days that are easy and days that are hard. However, if you buckle down, work hard, and take everything they throw at you, you’re in for a brilliant career!”

BUILDING A BRAND PEOPLE TRUST

When Mike Lapot’s aunt saw an ad in the paper about careers in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and suggested Mike find out more, he wasn’t immediately interested. With a talent for tap and talk of joining a professional dance company on a full-time basis, getting his hands dirty by starting a trade was the last thing on Mike’s mind. Despite this, a lifelong interest in aircraft made him think he should at least find out a little more.

Aircraft career opportunities Careers in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering can be incredibly rewarding, leading to overseas travel and relocations, flexible rosters, apprenticeship opportunities with some of the industry’s leading airlines, and best of all the training is heavily subsidised by the Queensland government. Places on the 2015 course are limited and filling fast, so secure yours today by calling the Academy and registering for their next Careers Event. When the members of the Chamber come together at our events, such as our monthly breakfast, Business Women’s lunch, the 7AM club and our Mastermind Groups, they are creating contacts and often end up doing business together. Why? Because they get to know and trust each other through their interactions. How do your potential customers view you and your business? How do you build trust with them? In keeping up with the times, one of the best ways is through social media. Get yourself known out there through developing an online presence with applications like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Zarfo. And don’t forget TrueLocal.com.au Business today is very different to pre-GFC days when times were good and sales were constant. So you have to adapt the way you do business if you want to increase your bottom line. In the old days, every business offered a discount or sale to bring in the customers. These days it’s about giving value for money to increase sales. A crucial part of that, which we spoke of in earlier columns, is service. Give top quality service based on good, solid authentic relationships and create a brand people trust and are confident in. Then they will be happy to use your services or buy your product. Today you need to be creative and innovative. Don’t forget to put testimonies from satisfied customers on your social media pages and website. This helps build trust.

One of our members, KWR Roofing, received a testimonial letter about their services. This clearly shows one of our members giving value for money through excellent service: “In today’s world we have a lot of negative things to say about some businesses. That is why I am writing to praise KWR Roofing for going above and beyond their duty. I am happy to say that the business owner, Kim, would be a very rare owner who stands by his warranty and beyond to satisfy his clients. I would not hesitate to recommend this business to anyone. Thank you, Kim, for a magnificent job, and I know your business will flourish due to your ethics and integrity.” Rosemary Swindells

This proves the point I can’t reiterate enough: Service is king. The chamber is constantly looking at ways to help businesses to become more profitable. One way is through our next Mastermind Group. We’re here to help you grow, which in turn will help the whole ‘Village’. It’s your chamber. Make the best of it.

MEMBER TESTIMONIAL Stress to Strength & Stress Management Institute Three months ago I joined the Logan Chamber of Commerce. From my first breakfast meeting I experienced the feeling of being connected to a group of like-minded business people. It has been an uplifting experience. Within a couple of weeks of joining, President Bill Richards invited my wife Dr Judy Hinwood and I to present two boardroom 90-minute

seminars titled Stress Relief Now. He also invited me to join him as his guest on his weekly radio segment on 101FM to promote the seminars. My experience is that Logan Chamber members are friendly, insightful and very willing to share their knowledge and experience. If you are thinking about joining the Chamber, think no more. Just do it!

BOOK CORNER with Wendy Millgate

HAVE YOU GOT A BOOK IN YOU? Most of us have a book in us waiting to be born – knowledge and memories to be shared. On November 22, at InHouse Publishing’s Authors’ Open Day, hear about how you can get those words out onto the page and into people’s hands as a book or on their Kindle and Ipads. Meanwhile, here are a few publishing questions I asked Ocean Reeve, InHouse Publishing Director: 1. What are the advantages of independent/ self-publishing over traditional publishing? Control, profit and rights. With traditional publishing the publisher holds the rights to the published work and its direction. The publisher then reaps the majority of the profit. Independent or self-publishing offers the author full control over the destiny of the book along with a higher profit margin, if done correctly. 2. Which model is InHouse following? We offer traditional publishing services but through the self-published route. We call it assisted self-publishing. This ensures trade standard work and great support throughout all stages of the publishing process. 3. How can authors who publish through Inhouse get their books out to the international marketplace? With print-on-demand processes, online bookstores, eBooks and the internet it’s never been easier. It is just a few clicks of the mouse, and we’ll guide you.
