T

he benefits of being active are well known, but many of us struggle to make regular exercise a part of our lives. Amanda Sheehan found that choosing an exercise routine to suit your individual needs and lifestyle is the key to getting active and staying motivated to move. Excuses for being inactive are many, including a lack of time and fatigue. But the statistics are too alarming to ignore. Over 14 million Aussies are currently overweight or obese and our sedentary lifestyle has resulted in greater incidents of Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer. We tend to see exercise as a chore and a hassle, but we need to reprogram our minds to see it instead as a vital way of achieving our physical and mental potential. Recent studies show that those who exercise regularly have higher job performance, self-acceptance and memory function. So where to start?

Start small – it’s better than nothing

Setting unrealistic goals regarding exercise can be our biggest downfall, which is why Helen Vause, author of Walking for Fitness, Pleasure and Health, recommends starting small. Whilst experts agree we need to be doing around 30 minutes of exercise per day at a minimum, don’t be discouraged if you can’t manage that. Apparently, running for as little as five minutes each day can add three years to your life. “Begin with 20–30 minutes of your chosen exercise just two to three times a week,” Helen suggests. Starting small will reduce the incidence of injury and soreness, and increased energy levels will spur you on to do more.

Suit your lifestyle

Sticking to exercise regimes that worked in the past but are not suited to your present day circumstances can see motivation wane. Chantelle from Runcorn was a former gym junkie, but fast forward a few years and as a mother to three small children she found it difficult to get out of the house, and the high intensity workouts she was used to had lost their appeal. Her solution was to fit in an early morning walk before her

husband left for work. “Those walks set me up for the whole day physically and mentally, which is great because I need to be in top form to cope with the rigours of being a stay-at-home mum,” she says. During summer the entire family have been joining Chantelle for an evening walk, and neighbours often tag along in the mornings. Chantelle says she loves the social dimension of “having a chat while you burn the fat”. uu Page 5

LOCAL LEGENDS CELEBRATED COMMUNITY HUB with

Wendy Millgate

Congratulations to 50 “terrific local people” recognised as Local Legends for their outstanding community contributions.

E

very day individuals and organisations in our community dedicate their skills, enthusiasm and energy in a diverse range of causes in order to enhance our quality of life. Some of these people may even save lives. These local heroes are not the sort to blow their own trumpets. But Jim Chalmers, MP for Rankin, felt it was time that someone did make a fuss and recognise these “terrific local people” making a difference in the community every day. “I am often amazed by the selfless acts that help make ours a community that looks out for each other,” said Jim Chalmers. So last October his office opened up nominations for the first ever Local Legends Awards. These awards are all about acknowledging and celebrating the efforts of “our community’s finest and most selfless people”. The nominees’ contribution could be as diverse as, but not limited to: • volunteering in our community of any kind • involvement in youth activities • preservation and protection of the environment • innovation and expertise in business • service to the arts, sport, culture or education

• along with those working with the aged or people with a disability On January 22, 50 recipients were awarded a Local Legends awards by Jim Chalmers MP at a special celebration held at St Maximilian Kolbe Parish, Marsden surrounded by family, friends clients and supporters. “Congratulations to everyone whose contribution we celebrated and thanks to all the friends and family members who came along to make it a really special afternoon,” said Jim Chalmers MP.

Graham Brewer is a farmer’s hero. His award was based on his efforts to raise money for drought-affected farmers out west. And we know how much farmers and their families need support at this time. Beny Bol was recognised for his extraordinary compassion, kindness and generosity he demonstrates through the tireless work for young people at Youth off the Streets. Logan West Community Art Share Alliance Inc. said they were delighted to receive a Local Legends Award for Community Associations. LWCASA offers a range of arts and crafts classes and social activities for children and adults including those with disabilities. Kathleen De Leon was recognised for her efforts in “highlighting the positive stories and

images of Logan City through social media and mainstream media through the Gotta Love Logan Campaign. Carol Stent has been one of the wonderful volunteers at ADRA on Station Road, Woodridge for years and has a passion for helping others in our community. Pam and Les Marshall have been permanent fixtures at the Logan City Cricketers Association for well over a decade and are the current President and Secretary. They can often been seen mowing and preparing the wicket at Gould Adams Park (apparently the best wickets in Logan). Kathryn Hanlon is a valued member of Life Without Barriers, who goes above and beyond by carrying out additional research, transport and monitoring activities beyond her normal duties. Exercise guru Alison Sweeney is a great advocate of exercising with others, explaining that it improves motivation. “You’re more inclined to show up and you’ll naturally get a little competitive, which can propel you to a new personal best,” she says. The Mt Gravatt Walking Group is one of many Brisbane groups that have formed to capitalise on the benefits of exercising with others. The group was founded in 2009 by Jennifer Wallace to encourage walkers to “spring into life by starting the day with a good dose of nature, exercise and great company”.

Yeehaw! Benefits of Linedancing

Improve health conditions

The assumption that exercise should be discouraged for those who have a chronic disease or health conditions is untrue. In fact, undertaken in consultation with your GP, the right kind of exercise can alleviate symptoms and aid recovery. It took Margaret Johnson from Sunnybank years of trial and error before she found an exercise class that relieved her symptoms of the muscle condition, fibromyalgia. Since beginning a weekly Feldenkrais class on the Southside she hasn’t looked back. “Feldenkrais is not jarring like other types of exercise I tried,” Margaret says of the low impact technique, which focuses on teaching the correct way to move our bodies.

A natural high

Around 1 million Australians suffer from depression each year, and health professionals believe that inactivity is a major contributing factor. In his book Get Fit Not Fat, Greg Whyte explains that feel-good brain chemicals such as

dopamine, serotonin and adrenalin are released in higher quantities during exercise, resulting in what he refers to as a “runner’s high” and a feeling of wellbeing, which remains long after exercise is completed. The feeling of “mastery” at having met exercise goals also improves mental health. Studies suggest that depression is more effectively treated in conjunction with an exercise program than by taking medication alone. Jason from Springwood has experienced the benefits first hand. Early last year he was diagnosed with depression, but feels that mountain bike riding a few days a week in Daisy Hill Regional Park has been an integral and undeniable part of his recovery. “Bike riding kind of saved my life. I feel better, sleep better and feel the buzz long after the ride is over,” he says. Greg Whyte provides the final word about the value of exercise: “It is the easiest, cheapest and

most effective way to improve your chances of a long, happy and healthy life.” What are you waiting for?

Tips to help you get moving 1. Mix with active people. 2. Keep a ball handy at home for a quick 20 minute burst of activity with the kids. 3. If your work requires sitting, consider an ergonomically designed “standing” desk.

Have you thought of trying linedancing? According to Debbie Greaves, founder of Dallas Linedancing, Brisbane, a linedancing club like hers is not only an exercise club but a social club too. It provides an aerobic workout plus weight bearing exercise and is a great way to socialise and form friendships. The benefits are: • Regular, moderate exercise • Friendship and fun • Mental exercise • Stress release • Delays and prohibits the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia etc. • Helps prevent osteoporosis

5. Lay out exercise gear the night before to make it easier to get going in the morning.

Dallas Linedancers have classes ranging from beginners to intermediate in Mt Gravatt East, Buranda and Springwood/Slacks Creek. No partner needed. All ages welcome.

OPEN HOME IN THE INTERNET AGE: IS IT STILL RELEVANT?

TIMBER SHUTTERS WITH GREEN CREDENTIALS

Just ten years ago, sellers could rely on open houses to give their properties wide exposure to potential buyers and sell their home on the spot. But thanks to the Internet and real estate portals, the traditional open house is starting to feel old hat. Most buyers today dip their toes into the housing market online, narrowing their choices through websites with vast databases of local properties for sale. They turn to real estate agents with the expertise, local knowledge and access to statistics to hone in on a few special properties. They might attend an open house if they like what they see on the internet. Meanwhile, sellers are under competitive pressure to stage their properties before open house, costing upwards of $2,000 to remain on front page of major real estate portals. With pictures, videos and personal tours of your home, staging may pay off in faster sales and higher asking prices, but don’t count on the staged open house alone to generate offers. Is having an open house still relevant? ABSOLOUTELY YES! They bring in qualified buyers who have scrutinised the property online, and a well-presented house can bring in that little “extra” selling price. Stellario Realty prides itself on the way we present our properties online and during open homes, and on our track record of selling properties for higher than the market price. Call us today and ask us how we do it.

TAXES, DUTIES AND FAMILY LAW Buying a property is a major investment and buying your first property is an exciting milestone. You may be eligible for stamp duty concession. Concessions are available for first home owners, home owners or first home vacant land. You may also be eligible for the Great Start Grant from the Government. Exemptions are also available for certain transactions, in which case there is no duty payable. For example, transfers under the Family Law Act. Are you separated from your partner/spouse? Do you intend to buy his/her share of the house but you are concerned about stamp duty? You can get stamp duty exemption if you finalise your property settlement first and the property is transferred under the terms of a consent order or a binding financial agreement. The exemption is available even if your partner’s interest in the property is being transferred to you and a third party, or to just a third party, as long as it is transferred under the terms of the consent order or binding financial agreement. If you can’t borrow, the property has to be sold. The net proceeds of sale can be invested on both you and your partner’s behalf or held in a solicitor’s trust account until you finalise property settlement with your partner. Cornerstone provides you with solid legal solutions. We walk you through the legal process so it is not overwhelming. CLEAR ACNE AND PREVENT SCARRING Scars from breakouts and acne can seem like double punishment! As if dealing with the pimples and cysts wasn’t bad enough, now you have marks as a reminder of that traumatic time. ARGH What is acne? Acne lesions and pimples appear when the hair follicles (or pores) of the skin become plugged with oil, debris and dead skin cells. A plugged follicle is the perfect place for bacteria (propionibacterium) to thrive, causing the red bumps and fluid-filled infections known as pimples. Acne doesn’t just affect teenagers either! This often debilitating disease can happen to anyone at any stage of life and can present in different forms: • Mild acne, which refers to a few whiteheads or blackheads that most of us get at various times • Moderate acne, which includes red, inflamed and often sore pimples called papules and red pimples with white centres called pustules

• Chronic acne, which causes fibrous nodules – painful, fluidfilled cysts or hard lumps – to appear under the skin What about the scars? The red or brown acne marks that are left behind after a pimple has gone often eventually fade with no need for treatment. However, picking and/or squeezing will prolong healing and increase the risk of scarring tenfold. Most serious scarring, however, is caused by the chronic forms of acne, with cysts more likely to leave permanent scars than any other type of acne. The clear skin solution? The best approach is to get treatment for acne as soon as it appears to prevent further problems and potential scarring. If you have acne, see a skin practitioner for a treatment plan. Everyone’s acne is as unique as the individual, so a professional diagnosis is recommended. The sooner you get the acne under control, the least chance of further scarring. Happier skin, more confident you!

Make Valentine’s Day Every Day Valentine’s Day Special with

… and maybe save that relationship!

Stephanie Azri

W

hether one is in a relationship or not, February is well known for being the month of the romantic! Flowers, cards and chocolates certainly would make anyone feel special. I do not doubt that romance is really fuzzy; however, I wonder if daily attention wouldn’t have a bigger effect on relationships and make one feel loved for longer. How can we make our loved ones feel special? Here are a few tips to assist you in making your partner, children or even best friend feel the love! Why not try them?

your love. Beware though, writing a love note just below asking your partner to empty the trash will somewhat have less of an impact. Love notes should be ‘free’. No strings attached.

Get to know their love language: Do they enjoy physical touch, kind words, gifts, your time or simply random acts of service? Speaking two different love languages can feel like we’re coming from two different countries. “Speak” in the person’s love language, get to know what they appreciate and you will be guaranteed a success.

Include meaningful intentions amongst routine events: Include a little treat in the grocery shop of the week as a surprise. It may be a couple of fresh dates, a packet of lollies or simply their favourite yoghurt. As a clinician, I attend regular conferences. I always find a way to recycle the free gifts we’re provided such as highlighters and candles and to give them to my partner or children as a way of reminding them I had them on my mind. Finally, things like picking a movie your partner would enjoy at the local video store rather than a movie you would enjoy can go a long way.

Create sentimental habits: Write your partner or children love notes and place them in their lunch boxes, dashboards or bags. You may also want to send them nice texts affirming their strengths for no other purpose than to express

Be kind: Be considerate in your everyday actions. Do not speak harshly to your partner or your children; love them in deeds and words. Even after they’ve broken your favourite mug or left a mess in your newly cleaned house, try to remember that you love them. (A few deep breaths should help!) Time out: Go on regular dates or make regular times to simply share ideas, conversations, goals, joys and trials. Enjoy your partner’s company for the simple things it brings. You don’t have to be going out. You may sit together on the patio or the couch and enjoy each other’s company. We’re all guilty of lacking time, energy and motivation to work on relationships as much as we could, particularly if children are involved. With busy lifestyles, it is difficult to take time out or to simply be romantic and thoughtful. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, let’s all

commit to trying at least one of those tips with our partner or children this month, and for my secret admirers I’ll accept all types of chocolates! A word from the editor: A great book for understanding you and your loved one’s love language is The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts by Gary Chapman. Planning a Honeymoon HOLIDAY ESCAPES with

Wayne Budge

With carefully planning your honeymoon can be the stress-free, exciting holiday you’re dreaming of. Here are the most common questions to consider.

How much will it cost?

Well, how long is a piece of string? A weekend down the coast is relatively inexpensive compared to six weeks in Tahiti. Discuss together how much you can afford then let that guide your decisions on where to go and for how long. Travel agents regularly offer specials. Discuss with them when you are getting married and when the best time of year would be to travel to a destination of interest. Don’t rush in and book the cheapest trip – research. In lieu of wedding gifts, you can suggest wedding guests contribute to a Honeymoon Registry at your travel agent to help with airfares, hotel nights or accommodation, tours, dinners and even cash in the destination currency.

When should we start organising it?

As soon as your wedding date is set! Leaving it to the last minute is a big “No No”. Once you have started the planning of the “Big Day” and decided on a budget, take some time out to discuss when and where you would like to go, and how long you can both be away.

Most couples opt to leave almost immediately after the wedding reception. Some defer the honeymoon to a later date. Most flights and airfares are available for purchase up to 11 months in advance. So get in as early as you can. Airfares need to be paid for within a couple of days of booking. So be prepared to outlay money once you have decided to book your flights. Ask your travel agent to book your accommodation straight away; payment will be later.

Where should we go?

Discuss locations with each other and research where you would both like to visit. Honeymoons usually conjure up an island getaway, but why not something different? Travel to a destination both of you have never been to. Do you want to trek Machu Picchu? Cruise to Fiji? Go on safari in Africa. Or perhaps just take a few days away somewhere to unwind after the wedding. Ask your travel agent for ideas. Plan your honeymoon according to your budget and allow enough time to enjoy it. Don’t fly half way round the world if you only have one week away.

Pay attention to your last name. • Check if you need visas or vaccinations. • Book travel insurance through your travel agent. If something happens while you’re away, one phone call to the travel agent can solve most issues.

• Don’t try and do everything yourself. Travel agents not only give advice, they can help you plan your honeymoon, taking a lot of stress off your shoulders. Check they have an ATAS accreditation certificate. • You will need a credit and cash in the local currency. Spirit Medium Appearing at Logan Diggers Club An internationally recognised spirit medium encourages making happy memories to overcome grief of departed loved ones. Australia’s very own spirit medium, Charmaine Wilson, has been on a mission for over 10 years after a vow she made to support those suffering after a loved one departs. Charmaine is again travelling all over Australia on her tour bus to bring messages of healing and creating happy memories from the spirit world to the living. She is appearing for ONE NIGHT ONLY on Tuesday 3rd March at Logan Diggers Club. “It’s time for us to celebrate in honour of the ones who have passed, to let them know they are not forgotten, and find joy in life again,” Charmaine says. “I understand how painful it is when the unthinkable happens. But at some point we need to make a choice about whether we are going to live the rest of our lives in the moment they passed or to live life in their honour. The one thing our spirit folk left us is many happy memories, so don’t let the sadness of

their death take that away! Take a leaf out of their book and always strive to leave a Happy Memory wherever you go.”

3rd popular medium worldwide

Charmaine’s passion undoubtedly shines through. And after recently being voted Number 3 in a list of the most popular mediums worldwide, Charmaine is determined to continue contributing to more happy memories. If you’ve seen her previously, you have witnessed her incredible wisdom, and if you’re new or doubting, you will see at the show just how precise Charmaine is. Known far and wide as the Australian Medium you see to properly deal with your grief, Charmaine certainly knows what she’s talking about, having helped thousands of people over the many years since she made her vow.

Support to get through grief

“I get enquiries from all over the world. Grief is a universal pain, and we need support to get through

it. I believe that’s where the transformation happens,” Charmaine shares. Charmaine is also highly regarded for her unique style of teaching and reading. She is down to earth and straightforward in her approach. And more than just connecting people with the other side, she offers practical techniques about letting pain go, to focus on happiness. So get your tickets NOW to the big celebration show as part of the Happy Memories Tour, at Logan Diggers Club, on Tuesday 3 rd March, and see Charmaine reminding those suffering that they can be happy again. Go to www.logandiggers.com.au or call 3208 8122 and get your tickets quickly as this show is sure to sell out.

Raising Resilient Children FAMILY with

Karen Tyrrell

I

t’s most parents’ desire to raise happy, loving children who are resilient, strong and optimistic. The resilient child is one who learns how to develop self-control, build interpersonal skills, and handle unfamiliar or challenging situations and frustrations more effectively. While some children seem to be resilient by nature, others may need a hand. The good news is resilience can be nurtured and developed, and who better than by resilient parents and teachers. You CAN help your children feel confident, to confront life’s challenges head-on and bounce back from frustrations that arise from this stressful, complicated world. You can do this through giving them emotional tools to resolve problems and make sensible, reasoned decisions. They need empowering stories to nurture positive self-talk and learn coping strategies to deal with life’s everincreasing problems. Here are 10 tips for parents and teachers to help our children to be happier, healthy and mentally stronger so that they can withstand the pressures of modern life

10 Tips for Fostering Resilience in Your Child 1. Read empowering books about resilience to your kids, spring-boarding discussions on what they fear and how they can overcome those fears. Children need inspiring stories to nurture positive self-talk and learn coping strategies to deal with life’s ever-increasing problems. 2. Be a positive role model. Lead by example. Show them how to bounce back. Teach positive social skills and problem solving skills. 3. Catch your kids being successful. Constructive feedback validates and reinforces positive behaviour, building self-esteem. 4. Help your child express what’s on their mind to open up communication channels. Encourage kids to write down what’s worrying them in their diaries or journals. Urge younger children to associate each emotion with specific facial expressions, body language and an emoticon. 5. Discuss family issues like illness, death and divorce. Discuss world events like war and natural disasters on a level they can grasp. Kids who watch

disturbing images on TV may worry about their personal safety and of the people they love. Talk to your kids about what they see and hear, and monitor what they watch on TV so you can help them understand what’s going on. 6. Immerse your child into an environment of self-confidence, self-awareness and emotional awareness. Let children play creatively. 7. Give children time-out to relax. Teach kids slow deep breathing for relaxation. 8. Teach your child simple meditation techniques. Start with a comfortable position, palms up, eyes closed, take slow deep breaths. Visualise being calm. 9. Ensure your child gets enough sleep, exercises every day and eats a healthy diet. Together we can empower our children to become more resilient. 10. Avoid eliminating all risk. Allow appropriate risk taking and teach them essential skills from a young age. Giving children age-appropriate freedom will help them learn their own limits and make appropriate decisions.

A Space to Shine Wendy Millgate visits Bella Diamonte’s Beauty Therapy – A pamper palace for women to be… BeYOU{tiful} Julie-Anne Faranda

F

rom the moment the little Feng Shuifriendly bells tinkle as I walk into Bella Diamonte’s Beauty Therapy, my senses are soothed with the sounds of soft, meditative music, the aromas of essential oils and the warmth of owner, Julie-Anne Faranda’s, welcoming smile. There is certainly a ‘retreat’ feeling here in this cosy salon, right in the middle of Springwood.

Science + Heart + Elegance

Julie-Anne and I tour the salon from the spray-tan shower to the manicure/pedicure corner and the two picturesque joining treatment rooms, which can open up for couples to be pampered together, each with a beautifully made up massage table. I am proudly shown top-of-the-range skin care equipment for IPL hair reduction and rejuvenation, microdermabrasion and lipo cavitation, reassurance that this clinic utilises science-backed technology. The red, black and gold furnishings are a mixture of warmth and elegant style. As I chat with Julie-Anne throughout my treatments – which include a skin analysis through experienced touch, an aromatherapy brush cleanse, BHA mask under steam, extractions, collagen gel massage, hydration mask and a yummy neck massage – she explains that women are under a lot of pressure these days. But not to worry – diamonds are formed under pressure! So what we women need is some time out for self-care, to let the worries and stress fall away, as well as their reflection in our body and skin, so that our natural beauty – the diamond within – can shine through.

Pampering pressure release

Some of Bella Diamonte’s clients book regular appointments to carve out pamper time for themselves. Some come to relax, unload and be looked after. Others have extreme skin conditions needing treatment, and they also find emotional support. Julie-Anne says it isn’t uncommon for some ladies, once they lie back and relax, to shed a few quiet tears. She reassures me that “We are here. We give the love”. Regular visits are made financially viable through two Salon Membership programs – one for Pampering and one for Specialist Treatments. I am gently reminded to drink more water, get more rest and eat more healthily – because beauty and health begin within. Julie-Anne

She is now stocking the ‘Changing Habits’ health foods and is making sure the majority of her products are organic and ‘green’, including the spray tan. TINNITUS

o you experience ringing or buzzing in your ears? If so, you may have tinnitus. Tinnitus is a ringing sensation in our ears or head when no physical, external noise is present. These sounds are false signals generated by damage or irritation to the hearing nerve or the cochlea (the hearing organ in the inner ear), which the brain interprets as sound. The volume of tinnitus can vary from person to person and can be described as a hissing, ringing, clicking or buzzing sound.

Not that buzzing again!

The most common causes of tinnitus are: • • • • • •

Exposure to loud sounds Trauma or injury e.g. blow to the head The aging process Ear infections or Meniere ’s disease Stress Some prescription and non-prescription drugs

The effects of tinnitus vary, from depression to mood swings, poor concentration and sleep problems, and can be extremely debilitating, impacting on work and even people’s ability to cope with normal life activities.

What can I do for tinnitus?

It is important to see an Audiologist and have a hearing test to determine if there is a medical condition that should or can be treated. If a specific cause can be found, the tinnitus may be reduced or eliminated. There is no medication that will cure tinnitus. However, there are plenty of methods that can be incorporated to help reduce and relieve the tinnitus. Supplements: Using a combination of the herbs Vitamin A, Zinc, Gingko Biloba and Garlic may help lessen the degree of the perceived tinnitus. Keep physically and mentally active: This helps take your mind off the tinnitus.

14

Relaxation techniques: Yoga, meditation or even a quiet walk can help. Some people have found aromatherapy relaxing.

Nothing to see. Everything to hear! Feeling10 years younger. Forgetting I even wear them. Wondering why I waited so long. Marveling at how small they really are. Actively participating in a meeting. Surprising friends by overhearing their whispered conversation. It’s NEW and very exciting!

Healthy diet: Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Reduce your alcohol, caffeine and salt intake. Quit smoking as nicotine has been linked with tinnitus.

All Ears in Hearing are all ears

If you are experiencing tinnitus, come and see Rachel or Brad at All Ears in Hearing. Established in 2006, All Ears in Hearing are an independent family owned hearing clinic, which is not aligned with any hearing aid manufacturers. Their professional advice is thus unbiased. Rachel has been a practising Audiologist since 2001 and Brad since 2003 and all things hearing are their passion. Their services include hearing tests and custom ear plugs for adults and children and hearing devices for adults.

Avoid loud noise: Exposure to excessive loud noise can aggravate tinnitus and should be avoided if possible. If you are exposed to noise, hearing protection must be worn such as custommade ear plugs.

Wear hearing aids: In some cases, use of a hearing aid is beneficial. By providing amplification of normal and other environmental sounds, the tinnitus becomes less evident.

Avoid silence: Play the radio softly or CDs with soothing sounds such as the rain or ocean. These quiet noises help to ‘mask’ the tinnitus.

For over 35 years, Logan Funerals has been serving this community with a commitment to the finest funeral traditions.

Call today to make an appointment to see if Phonak nano is right for you! - Nothing to see. Everything to hear!

Medications: Tinnitus can be a side effect from some medications. If you are taking any medications it is best to consult with your doctor.

Mention this advert and receive a COMPLIMENTARY HEARING CONSULTATION Includes a hearing test and discussion on solutions to help manage your tinnitus.

Brad Letch Manager, Logan Funerals

Phonak nano is more than just a tiny hearing aid. It is the perfect combination of maximum hearing performance and minimum size. It is custom crafted to fit entirely in your ear canal, using computer-aided design and the latest generation of advanced materials. Phonak nano – let your hearing aids go unnoticed, just wear and enjoy!

Reduce stress and fatigue: Stress can increase the intensity of the tinnitus, so try to get a good night’s sleep and avoid stressful situations as much as possible.

SERIOUS NECK PAIN? It can affect your sleep, your marriage and your job. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally but physically feeling held back from life because your neck hurts and the pain just won’t go away! My name is Dr. Andrew Gorman, owner of Andrew Gorman Chiropractic. Over the years since we’ve opened our door, I’ve seen hundreds of people with neck pain, arm problems and headaches leave the office pain free. Because patients tell me too often…“I only wished I had found you sooner”, I’m running Neck Pain Evaluations for those suffering with neck problems. Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again With my Neck Pain Evaluation, I’ll be able find the problem and then correct it. Think of how you may feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living. Feel tight joints rest, relax, free up. Feel muscles tied in

knots become more supple. Feel strength in your muscles increase. As you begin to see motion returning to your joints, you’re preventing and reducing chances of disability and a crippling future. You’re able to live life like a normal person again, without neck pain -able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends and not have to worry that your pain will hit you at just the wrong time. “Will This Really Work For Me?” A recent scientific study showed chiropractic adjustments outperformed massage treatments in reducing pain. The study concluded that patients with chronic neck pain showed “clinically important improvements from a course of spinal manipulation… The current evidence does not support a similar level of benefit from massage.”– J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2007

In another study comparing acupuncture, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and spinal manipulation found… “After a median intervention period of 30 days, spinal manipulation was the only intervention that achieved statistically significant improvements.” - J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1999 $47 NECK EVALUATION OFFER What does this $47 offer include? Everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation. Just call, make an appointment and here’s what you’ll get… • An in-depth consultation about your neck problems where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A full set of specialised x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms… (NOTE: These will be bulk billed if clinically indicated). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings, so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. So call 3386 0856 today. I may be able to help you live a normal, pain-free life again. We are on the corner of Cinderella Dr and Athena Grove, in the heart of Springwood.

FITNESS with

Pat Rae

A

Wanna Live Longer? Get Up and Move

few weeks ago I saw on Channel 9’s, “The Today Show” a story titled, Lack of Exercise More Deadly Than Obesity. In a British study, researchers examined 340,000 subjects and tracked them through their life until they died. The study conclusively showed that lack of exercise was the main reason why the members of the study died, NOT obesity. In 2012, Australia’s peak fitness body, Fitness Australia, commissioned Deloites to write a report on the state of the fitness industry. Based on census figures of 2009–2010, Deloites reported that 18.3% of the Australian population participated in organised fitness activities. That’s 3.6 million people exercising, which means that 16.4 million Australian’s are not participating in organised fitness activities. Given the direct relationship then between not exercising and dropping dead, it makes perfect sense then to ask you this question: Which group are you in – the 3.6 million exercising or 16.4 million not? Ironically, as I write this, lying on my desk waiting to be hung on the wall of my PT studio is a poster. It’s titled, Need a Reason to

16

Train? How About 100? And you guessed it; the poster has 100 different reasons why you should train. Here are my favourite four: 1. It enhances sexual desire, performance and satisfaction. 2. It reduces your risk of getting heart disease. 3. It helps to alleviate depression. 4. It improves overall quality of life. There are 96 other great reasons to train on the poster. If you’d like me to email you a copy of the poster, feel free to contact me at info@prpt.com.au For everyone reading this that does do some form of structured exercise regime (18%) I guarantee there will be four others (82%) with a reason why they CAN’T TRAIN. Three other fitness professionals and I spent a couple of hours one day collating all the different reasons we had come across during our time in the industry, and yep, I’ve collated those into another poster and it’s titled, 100 Excuses I’ve Heard Why People Can’t Train.

Here are the funniest four: 1. My husband said I’m not allowed to train because I slept with my last trainer and now he doesn’t trust me. 2. I can’t claim my training on my health insurance. 3. I’m not going to train because I’m not going to listen to you. 4. I’ve stubbed my big toe and can’t wear shoes. The fact of the matter is this: Australia has an obesity pandemic. Don’t believe me? Go to any food court and any shopping centre between 11am – 2pm and count the obese people in 10 minutes. Australians are fatter and sicker than ever before. In fact, for the first ever in the history of mankind, the generation born today will die sicker and fatter than their parents. Medicare costs continue to rise and our current taxation system cannot afford to keep funding Medicare in its current form. Like my mother used to say, only an idiot keeps doing the same thing, expecting a different result.

The simple solution is this: If you wanna live longer and healthier, without getting sick and fat, get off your backside and move! Pat Rae Personal Training Springwood | Mobile 0414 654 372 www.prpt.com.au

Sunburn Relief by Dr Andrew Gorman

M

ost of us have suffered from sunburn. Redness, pain and slight swelling can last anywhere from three to seven days. Afterwards the skin usually peels and may be itchy. Here are some home remedies that can provide relief from mild sunburn. But please see a doctor immediately if there are signs of shock or heat exhaustion such as: dizziness, a rapid pulse, rapid breathing, nausea, fever, chills, severe skin blisters, extreme thirst, and/or diminished or no urine output.

Hydrotherapy

Try a brief cold bath or shower. Placing towel compresses on the affected areas for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day, can temporarily keep the sunburn cool and hydrated.

Topical Vinegar

Plain white vinegar is a popular sunburn remedy. Apply as a compress by soaking a clean towel in a half water-half vinegar solution. Loosely wring the towel and apply to affected areas, avoiding contact with broken skin and the eye area. You can fill a clean spray bottle with the half vinegarhalf water solution and “spritz” it onto skin. Just “drip dry”. www.southcitybulletin.com.au | February 2015

Aloe Vera gel

The gel inside aloe plant leaves is believed to have anti-inflammatory effects. Cut off a leaf, split it open and rub the clear gel from the inside of the leaf on the sunburn. Avoid the sticky yellow latex. Do not use on severe burns or wounds.

Black tea

Brew enough tea bags to cover a considerable area of the sunburn. Ice them down to get the tea really cold. Place the cold, wet tea bags and/or a cloth drenched in the tea over the affected area for approximately one hour, three times a day. Keep the bags and cloths cold and submerge the burned part of the body into the tea if possible. Keep applying until the sunburn subsides.

Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of fluids. Burns cause a loss of fluids from the body and sunburn is no exception. Remember, dehydration can also cause headaches and fatigue. Water is the best way to rehydrate. Drink plenty and add electrolytes, available in any pharmacy. Andrew Gorman Chiropractic 2a Athena Grove, Springwood QLD 4127 Tel: 3386 0856

3 INGREDIENT COOKING

Good food that’s simple & fast

I

n today’s time-poor society, we often sacrifice good nutrition for fast food when we fail to realise that good food can be simple and fast. Meals don’t have to have 20 ingredients and take hours to make to be good and tasty. Just take a few simple ingredients that are in season, treat them simply and enjoy. Then you have more time to get out and be active. A few years ago someone came out with the idea of the 4-Ingredients cookbook. A lot of the recipes relied on a bottle of prepared sauce or the equivalent as one of the ingredients. Well, you can go one better – healthy, nutritious tasty meals with three or less whole food ingredients. Breakfast is easy, with the traditional bacon and eggs or porridge. Lunch can be a simple sandwich or salad. But dinner is often more challenging for people who work all day, come home exhausted and don’t feel inclined to make a nutritious dinner. Dinner entrée can be half an avocado with vinegar and oil, or smoked salmon with cream cheese on toast triangles. Or when the weather turns cooler, soup is always a good 3-ingredient option. Pumpkin soup made from onion, pumpkin and water. Or tomato soup made from onion, tomato and stock. For a main course there are few tastier meals than a simply cooked steak with mushrooms and asparagus. Substitute the steak for a fillet of salmon and the asparagus for broccoli for an alternative.

In fact, we often think that an evening meal should be complex and time consuming whilst wishing that the opposite was true. Just think of your three favorite ingredients and put them together. Try to think of your favorite protein and just two accompaniments, for example:

17

• a simple salad of tuna with lettuce and cherry tomatoes • grilled pork with grilled tomatoes and asparagus • baked lamb chops with baked potatoes and pumpkin. Dessert, especially in this hot weather, has to be ice cream made with one ingredient – banana.

Banana Ice Cream

Peel ripe bananas, cut into 3cm long pieces and freeze. When ready to eat blend in a food processor for a minute. At first you will think this won’t make ice cream, just crumbly frozen banana. But after about 30 seconds smooth creamy banana ice cream forms. One you have mastered that trick you can vary the flavor with a tablespoon of peanut butter or coconut cream. Other simple frozen treat ideas are: • a bunch of frozen grapes • frozen sliced fruit • fruit juice frozen into ice block shapes.

This is not just a summer idea; grilled or poached fruit in winter is just as easy and delicious. So next time you are in a quandary about what to cook for breakfast, lunch or dinner, keep it simple: one protein and two accompaniments and you are done. Bon appetite !

Gap year or no gap year? Education with

Amanda Sheehan

S

ome see taking a break after high school – called a gap year – as a waste of time. But it is a trend that is certainly gaining momentum. Last year almost a quarter of students who received offers of university places in Australia opted to defer their studies in order to take time out, sometimes due to burn-out and indecision regarding the path to take after high school. A few years ago, Zubayr Khan from Mansfield SHS was finishing Grade 12 but was having trouble deciding what to study the following year. Rather than choosing a study path for the mere sake of it, or risk choosing the wrong course altogether, Zubayr decided to take a gap year, a decision he has never regretted. “During my gap year I worked in a restaurant and took the time to really consider my options. Initially, I had no idea of what I wanted to do. Taking time out confirmed my desire to continue to study and definitely helped me make the right decision in the end.” Zubayr is now studying a Diploma in Accounting at Southbank Institute of Technology and has never looked back. While it may not be for everyone, studies have shown that students who take a gap year

between high school and commencing university study often perform better than those who commence study straight away. A paper published in last year’s Journal of Higher Education outlined research undertaken by Professor Andrew Martin from the University of Sydney, in which he uncovered many other positives associated with the gap year option. It seems that the greatest advantage is exposing yourself to varied life experiences, gaining a little more maturity and becoming more convinced of your life choices. All of these benefits can ultimately result in being better able to cope with the stresses and demands of University life, which can be very different to high school.

Yes to gap year

A gap year can virtually be anything you want it to be. You can take a working holiday, immerse yourself in a different language or culture, build a school in a developing country or work in a pizza restaurant to consider your options and take a break from the books. “It’s important to have a constructive gap year and not be aimless – learn a language or get a job in a field you hadn’t previously considered,” Professor Martin explains.

No to gap year

But for those students who finish high school with sufficient drive and clarity, the gap year may have little appeal or justification. Elysia Downes from Kuraby completed year 12 at Mansfield State High School last year and knows exactly where she’s headed. Her goal is to be a registered Architect by the age of 23, and she is keen to get her studies underway. “I have my goal in sight

and I don’t want to wait another year to reach it,” she says with enthusiasm. This year Elysia will commence a Bachelor of Design (Architectural Studies) at QUT and is keen to begin her studies in an area she is passionate about. “I have just finished twelve years of study. By the time I start uni I will have had a four-month break, and I think that will be enough,” she says, adding “I don’t want to lose momentum”.

John Paul College - Being all you can be Scoring on the Big Stage Former John Paul College student and South Korean captain, Ki Sung-Yeung is carrying the pride of the College with his outstanding performance in the Asian Cup.

Ki Sung-Yeung with JPC students Chloe Prieditis and Jack Crameri

The Korean Republic central midfielder was the first member of John Paul College’s TY Sports Academy and spent four years at the Daisy Hill school before building his impressive professional career.

The 25 year old paid the school a visit during his recent trip to Brisbane for the match at Suncorp Stadium. Greeted by Headmaster, Peter Foster, Director of John Paul International College, Russell Welch and members of the TY Sports Academy, Ki spent hours talking to staff, students and past coaches.

Eddie and the Captains Welcome in the New School Year School’s in for 2015 and College mascot, Eddie the Eagle was only too willing to meet up with School Captains, Varun Kumar and Teah Westerman and Vice Captains of Primary School, Jay-Lee Senituli and Christopher Soful-Thorne to greet all of the returning Primary School students. “This is an exciting day for us as our teaching and support staff work enthusiastically to prepare the learning spaces and experiences for the year ahead. We do it for the students because we want them to grow and they are the centre of the learning environment,” said Head of Primary School, Andy Gordon. Over 1,000 students from the Early Learning Centre to Year 6 returned to John Paul College Primary School, including over 160 new students who joined their new Primary friends and classmates this week.

Currently playing for Swansea in the English Premier League, Ki spoke no English when he arrived in Australia and credits his time down under for paving the way for his international career. “It is a big part of why, when I went to play in England, that I had no problems living there and communicating with people,” Ki said. “The culture is so different there, but my time spent in Australia was really helpful”.

Fun with Number 3

Number 3 people are a ray of sunshine spreading their cheer to all they meet. They have a need to converse through singing, laughing, speaking, writing and acting. Charisma is part of their behaviour and without any considered effort they entice an audience. However, not all number 3s will manage to develop an extraverted temperament. Traditions and other interests such as astrology and full numerology will regulate how outgoing they become.

Technology that will change your life in 2015!

Apple Watch

Smart Home Devices

Revealing its first new product line since the death of Steve Jobs, Apple will finally expose itself to the highly competitive smart watch arena. While Apple has yet to establish why a wrist computer is as essential as a smartphone or tablet, the Apple Watch is clearly more than a Dick Tracy gadget. It will undoubtedly kick-start a new wave of ideas about how to stay connected with your friends, work and fitness through a device that’s literally always on you. (Source www.apple.com)

Windows 10

Expect Microsoft to turn back time in Windows 10 this year. After a generally disappointing reaction to its tile-filled, tabletready Windows 8 software, the company plans to introduce a more traditional look in Windows 10, including the return of the much-loved Start button. Microsoft will also introduce a voice assistant named “Cortana” in this operating system, which is expected to be formally unveiled in January, with a launch later in 2015.

Fitbit

Just as smart-watches adopted fitness features this year, fitness gadgets will get smart next year. Fitbit plans to launch the Surge, a $300 “fitness super watch” with a substantially larger display, phone call and text message notifications, and music controls, in addition to GPS tracking, continuous heartrate monitoring, and sleep and step-tracking. (Source: news.com.au)

I might be calling this one a few years too soon; nonetheless there are some great smart home technology devices starting to hit the market. How about replacing your light switch with something a little smarter? At its very basic level, the NuBryte console replaces your inwall light switch with a touch-screen panel, through which you can control your lights. In each console is a small camera with a 120-degree field of vision that can be used for security and communication (you can video conference with other consoles or through NuBryte’s smartphone app). Using this camera, the console will detect when someone enters a room and will adjust the lighting in that room based on your behaviour... Pretty cool, right?
