Up to the challenge? COMMUNITY HUB with Wendy Millgate

DATE CLAIMER: Mt Gravatt Challenge Sunday 21 June 2015 Shire Road, Mt Gravatt

The Iconic 2015 Mt Gravatt Community Challenge is on for locals and their four-legged friends Two years ago Tony South recognised that there was a lack of events in our local area that brought community together for fun with families and their dogs.

Starting with a vision

Tony envisioned a community event where the focus would be on getting families out to enjoy a few hours together to have fun, relax and even forge new friendships. Luckily his fellow members of the Mt Gravatt Rotary Club were inspired by his vision and thus started what was to be a significant yearly community event –The Mt Gravatt Challenge. It was only natural that wonderful Mt Gravatt itself was decided upon as the focal point of the challenge with its vistas of the city and the distant Glasshouse Mountains. Families, groups of friends or individuals are challenged to walk, or run, with their special family pet dog from the base of the mountain up to the summit, a distance of 1.5km, following the sealed road

through the Mt Gravatt bushland. The road is closed off to traffic for the event.

Community working together

The event has been embraced by the community with the planning committee now comprising representatives of other community organisations such as Lions Club of Greater Mt Gravatt Mansfield and the Southside Chamber of Commerce plus businesses Ray White Real Estate and Pet City. This year’s Challenge is supporting specifically the Hope Foundation and Wildcare Australia.

Goal: 500 walkers and their dogs

Over 220 participants joined in the Challenge in the first year and last year 300 participants attended along with 65 dogs that walked their proud owners, both adults and children, to the top of Mt Gravatt (who was walking who?). Cr Krista Adams and her pet dog are regular participants of the walk each year. The goal for 2015 is for 500 to enter the Challenge. Once again the event will have pet drinking stations along the route and at the top for pets to keep hydrated and there are some pit stops for

their owners as well. St John’s Ambulance is on hand for any emergencies

Fun events at the top!

The top of the mountain will have lots of fun activities for the kids including meeting a funny clown, face painting, jumping on the jumping castle, slurping a slurpy or tucking into fairy floss and popcorn. There’s also planned entertainment. This year the organisers are encouraging more participation from school children with a colouring competition and joining in the walk as groups.

Schedule

Registration opens at 7 am for the first group starting at 7:30 am. Last walkers commence from the base at 9 am. There is an official opening address by Cr Krista Adams at 9 am at the summit. The road reopens at 11 am.

The changing roles of mums hasn’t stopped their most important role of all – being MUM!

F

ifty years ago life was a lot different for families. Many mothers stayed at home to raise the family and manage the household. Kids played outside until dark and the milk and bread were delivered. Jobs mothers had before marriage were often unavailable after having children. Working from home was not a common option unless you became a Tupperware or Avon consultant. But the technological revolution has created an entire new world and forever changed how mothers fit into society and the roles they play. And many mums agree that it’s for the better and there’s much to celebrate.

At 2 am a mother can easily Google things she doesn’t know about children’s health or learn off Pinterest how to make the perfect “Frozen” cake for her child’s first birthday. It has also opened up a whole new sector for employment with the rates of stay-at-home mums having a side job growing every day, like being a blog writer or selling craft and homemade goods. A 1950s mum would never have had the wide customer base that a modern mum has with connections through the internet, in particular social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. It has also given power to women’s abilities to stay at home with their kids and work from home in their professions, for example, as a bookkeeper or editor. Greater flexibility with the working mum means a better work life balance and greater opportunities where in the 1950s these wouldn’t have been available. Southside mum of two Kelly Price says, “We have come so far technologically and I’m really grateful for that because it means I have been

able to work from home and look after my babies as well. I have a business from home, sewing, and I get so much exposure and cliental from being online and on social media that wouldn’t have ever been possible 50 or 30 years ago.”

Prior to the Second World War women had the major role in raising the children and tending to the house. But during the war many women had to work outside the home while the men were away, and a revolution began. Women in the work force became more common and the feminist movement and the equality agenda changed the role of women in society forever, and the family unit. uu Page 9

What to ask an agent when buying property

6

Mortgage Broker versus Bank Manager

Becoming Migraine Free

As the buyer you have the money, and in order to make an informed decision to purchase and how much to offer you need to have all the facts. Some questions to ask the agent can include: • Is there any structural or pest issues that you know of with the property? (could save you doing a costly Building & Pest Inspection) • Is there a price that will buy this property today? • If I put the offer in writing now, are the owners able to make a decision today? • Are there any more favourable terms the owner would like i.e. long settlement, shorter conditions? • Why are the owners selling? (the answer could give a clue as to what conditions would be more favourable to the sellers) • Have any previous offers been rejected? Why did the previous contract fail? In our current busy market, there can be multiple offers for one property, so the conditions on your offer can make all the difference such as if you can offer a 30 day settlement. A larger deposit amount (max. 10%) which shows you’re serious to buy and you have the money to purchase (pre-approved finance for 14 days) is ideal, as is a 7-day Building & Pest Inspection. Remember, the 7 days is the time to have the inspection carried out. If there are issues, you can request extra time to have them resolved.

When looking to purchase a property, many people go straight to their bank to arrange their finance. But have you ever thought about using a Mortgage Broker instead? As a middle man between yourself and the lender, a Mortgage Broker has expertise in finding the best mortgage solution to meet your needs. Compared to a Bank Manager who works for one lender and only has access to one suite of lender products, with a Mortgage Broker you’re meeting with 30+ different lenders and accessing hundreds of different loan products. Mortgage Brokers offer clients choice and save them time and money. They do all the leg work in comparing lenders and finding the best loan solutions, negotiating the best interest rates, loan products and loan structure for their clients. Compared to your local Bank Manager who can be moved between branches and roles, Mortgage Brokers often own and operate their own businesses, have many years of experience in the industry and are committed to working with their clients over the long term, with after-hours availability too. Mortgage Brokers also offer specialised assistance such as construction loans, investment portfolio loans and debt reduction strategies. You could say that your Mortgage Broker is like the perfect personal banker. They know what you need and make sure it happens. In other words they are with you for the long term.

IF YOU THINK migraine tablets and medication are the only way to treat your headaches and migraines, you’ve been misinformed! Research shows more and more headache and migraine sufferers are developing ‘Rebound headaches’ or ‘Medication overuse headaches’, which result in their headaches worsening in the long term. These disorders affect those who continue to take migraine medication, or even simple over-the-counter medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Sound familiar? There are currently no known medications to cure headaches and migraines, yet billions of people continue to do so every day. A step forward in becoming migraine free is to avoid taking unnecessary medication to prevent or relieve mild to moderate headaches. This simple tip will prevent long-term side effects and stop rebound headaches from developing. New research and studies are now pointing to a sensitised brainstem as the cause of headaches and migraines. Because of this there are now safe, drug-free treatment options available that are non-invasive, inexpensive and radiation free for longterm improvement. Imagine a life free from headaches and migraines without the need for taking medication. You should always enlist expert help and advice from a specialised headache clinician if symptoms persist or worsen. If you have any questions, contact us!

Restore Your Skin in 4 Steps Skin practitioners believe that the origin of most skin conditions is a result of disharmony within the layers of the skin. Using the principles of biochemistry, at Integrity we prescribe a range of treatments and products designed to educate skin to perform like youthful healthy skin. By matching formulations with the body’s chemistry, the skin is encouraged to respond in a positive manner. Our revolutionary concept of REMOVE, REBUILD, PROTECT, MAINTAIN aims to match an individual’s biochemistry with the appropriate skin therapies. Botanical-based, results-driven paramedical products make up the skin care program. Remove Remove the dead skin cell build-up, which leads to the appearance of dry skin, fine lines, congested skin or skin

discolouration. Thickened skin can also inhibit the penetration of home skin care, rendering it ineffective. Rebuild Rebuild skin by encouraging the skin’s vital internal processes to function optimally, enabling cells to stay alive longer and perform at their highest potential, creating healthier, younger looking skin. Prescription oils, serums, sprits and crèmes work directly on the skin cells with ‘direct delivery’. These are designed to provide natural skin tone, moisture and improved acid mantle function. Protect Protect the skin from the sun, free radicals, glycation and other environmental factors that lead to premature ageing using potent, natural, transdermal antioxidants.

Maintain Maintain beautiful skin with home skin care prescriptive that work to prolong the results achieved by professional treatments. Our concept provides our clients with lifelong, successful and manageable skin health programs to incorporate into their daily lives. I

f someone had told me that the thought of having major surgery would one day send me giddy with anticipation, I would never have believed them. But it’s true. In a few short days I am leaving my husband and three children behind and going under the knife. I will be staying in the hospital for four or five nights. And I secretly cannot wait. Let me clarify my cause for excitement: I am being dropped off at the hospital door at 6.30 am on a week day. My husband will drive away and then return home to get the children ready for school. He will have to make their lunches, iron their uniforms and pack their bags, all while I sit in the waiting room watching uninterrupted morning television, pausing only to stare into space at random intervals. After surgery I will spend the next few days recuperating and, in complete contrast to my every day life as a mother, I will be the one who is cared for instead of the one doing the caring. There will be visitors. Concerned friends and family will come, maybe with flowers and magazines, and we will be able to chat. That’s right: chat. For as long as we want, uninterrupted. The best part will be the meals. Food will

be brought to me. A kitchen of chefs will work around the clock to ensure that my breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided. I will eat jelly, and I won’t have to share! I won’t have to cut up anyone else’s food for them, and I won’t have to listen to the cries of “yuk!” and “not this again” as I eat. Sitting in a café in Paris would not bring more pleasure (well, okay maybe a bit more). And then dear reader, I will lay my head back on the pillow while someone comes and wheels my empty plate away. I will have little else to do at that point than flick through the movie channel on my own personal television or catch up on my favourite magazine. There will be no brushing three sets of tiny teeth. There will be no bath time or bedtime stories. Actually, there will be a story, but it will be me catching up on my novel and a prime time movie instead of The Adventures of Patch the Dog. Ordinarily it would be almost impossible to engineer a week away from my family. My much longed for trip to New York City has not yet unfolded, and even my day at the spa to celebrate a not-so-recent milestone birthday seems out of reach. But when a specialist tells you that you need surgery, why, there is no option. I know that

I will miss my children and my everyday life. My preference is always to be with them; I love being a mother. But the thought of taking some time out, albeit in a hospital bed, is the stuff of dreams. So this will be my secret vacation. And if I have to accept a large scar in my abdomen and take pain killers every four hours to get it then c’est la vie! Local Businesses GET BETTER Local Business Skills Program a huge success. Get ready for the next one! a certified vocational education assessor, has real-life experience in their own successful business sets this program apart. Rudi Tartaglia is a proficient specialist and trainer in marketing and strategic management who says he gets enormous satisfaction in assisting “great people”. “I love the opportunity to impart real knowledge. In the last program, participants were really engaged, putting in a great effort,” says Rudi. Rudi said that he believed the fact that the participants had to invest financially in the program, albeit a very modest sum, gave them more motivation to learn and apply the tools for real business growth.

“In business if you’re not growing, you’re going backwards. This program gives you new tools to grow.” Rudi Tartaglia, Small Business Solutions Mentor

What do 11 local business owners, ranging from a student counsellor to a telecommunications retailer, aged care provider, audiologist, painter and more have in common? They are now fired up to apply the world-class business strategies and mentoring wisdom they received through the latest Build a Better Business program. And they have made some great business friends along the way. Once again last month Small Business Solutions mentor, Rudi Tartaglia, provided tailormade solutions to each Build a Better Business attendee to take their business to a whole new level. World-class training was delivered via one-on-one mentoring and 15 hours of training within a small group setting, which has definite advantages.

More options for working mums The new demand on equal parenting has been a monumental leap in social development and we have entered into a world where all different forms of parenting units are acceptable. As women have continued to become more of a fixture in the working world over the past fifty years, fathers have stepped up to raise the children and tend to the house. Some are even full-time, stay-at-home-dads. Single mums are a parenting revolution that came with the rise in women’s positions in society. In the 1950s it was not a socially acceptable thing to be a single mum, but with the changing times women now have more power and are not frowned upon like they used

to be for doing it solo. Single parenting, by either father or mother, may be more common due to a gradual increase in the level of divorce in Australia. And in some cases it’s simply by choice. Jac Coleman says her mother’s journey as a single mum shows how times have changed. “My mum was effectively a single mum in the ‘80s and at 32 she considers that she had children “late”. She still thinks people looked down on her for being a single mum. She had one really good friend but no others, and she was very close with her family. She never worked until I was around 15; it was so different to how my life as a mum has been so far.”

Not only have we seen the rise of women in the workforce since the 1950s, there is also a greater flexibility and more rights for the working mum, though recent statistics show that men in corporate positions still receive higher incomes than women in the same position. Bethany Kelly’s story of her family’s history is a great example of the way mothers have changed. “My mum was born in 1950. Her mother was a stay-at-home wife, married during the war. She was firmly in charge of the finances and ran a tight ship but never needed to work whilst my mum was at home. Times were very tough during the post-war era, with rationing, high levels of alcoholism among returned soldiers and not a lot of talking. My grandmother dressed formally

at all times and to the day she died she wore a ‘frock’, sheer stockings and black patent heels. She trained as a secretary and worked during the war and returned to work once my mum had left home, 22 years later. She had no ‘friends’ merely her sisters.” Kelly’s mother was degree educated and had a career before Kelly was born in 1981, when she was 31, although she married fairly young at 22. She never managed to return to the same level as she had before, once she returned to work. She had no ‘rights’ so she relinquished a Head Teacher’s post and then had to do 10 years in temporary posts before she even regained a permanent classroom teacher’s post. “Mum was in charge of everything in our house, financing etc. She had a close group of friends and she cared about her appearance, but it wasn’t central to her being,” says Kelly. “My generation is very appearance focussed; my mother would be appalled at the money I spend on skin care and makeup and I’m low maintenance in comparison to many.” While Kelly had the career like her mum when she became a mum in 2008, she now, unlike her mum’s experience, has the right to take more of a flexible return to work without losing her position. And she still runs the house and has good friends all while being the best mum she can be. All round, Kelly finds the life of a modern mum very satisfying. Many would say that the worth of a mother has changed substantially since the 1950s, for the better. Mothers are heralded for the hard work they do, whether they stay home with their kids or are employed or mix and match it up. Mums have been there to kiss pains away and wipe noses for generations, and in this modern age this hasn’t changed.

PREGNANCY BACK PAIN? Pregnancy can be overwhelming at times. While it’s one of the greatest things to ever happen to you, your body goes through some difficult changes like back pain, shoulder stiffness, sciatica and pelvic problems just to name a few. If not addressed, these conditions can have a negative impact on your lifestyle and can make your delivery much more difficult. My name is Dr. Andrew Gorman, director of Andrew Gorman Chiropractic. By using my gentle chiropractic techniques, I’ve been blessed to help pregnant women suffer less and have more joyful pregnancies. Chiropractic care has a long, proven track record in helping pregnant women during this constantly changing yet delicate time. Here’s what one study had to say about chiropractic and pregnancy... “84% of patients receiving spinal manipulative therapy [chiropractic care] reported relief of back pain during pregnancy. There was significantly less likelihood of back labor when spinal manipulative therapy was administered during pregnancy.” – JMPT 1991

This confirms that not only is chiropractic care one of the best, natural, drug-free solutions to your back pain, but it will most likely make your labour much less painful. Add to this what childcare experts and authors Dr. William and Martha Sears state in their highly praised The Pregnancy Book, “chiropractic care in pregnancy can help to... avoid or relieve back pain and also prepare your back and pelvic structures for the stresses of labour and birth.”

As you can see, chiropractic care during pregnancy is a well-established and safe method of care, and that’s why I treat my wife for her back, neck and pelvic pain during her current pregnancy. My wife is 4 months pregnant now with our second child and you can ask her how chiropractic has helped her back and pelvic pain. That’s why I want to give you a special opportunity to see if chiropractic can be your solution to the problems that accompany pregnancy. To see if chiropractic can help you for only $47 phone us on 3386 0856. This examination includes everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation. Take a look at what you will receive: • An in-depth consultation about your health where I will listen…really listen. • A complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam to find the “cause” of your problem. • A thorough analysis of your exam findings so we can map out your plan to better health. • I’ll answer all your most probing questions about chiropractic and what it can do for you. You won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either; we pride ourselves on running on time. The appointment will take approximately half an hour. Don’t suffer your whole pregnancy term when there’s a natural solution. Call today 3386 0856.

An ode to the much-loved Aussie pub meal The local hubs for community, coldies and a great meal Our Picks

Newnham Hotel is a nice, friendly local pub at 516 Newnham Rd, Upper Mt Gravatt. Ph: 3343 1666. It has a good selection for lunch, every day, for only $12 incl. free drink. Special dinner options.

P

ub food has changed over time. Pubs in Australia were originally built as one of the first buildings in a developing area. They served a lot of functions, from staging post, post office, meeting place and even a general store. Many pubs in the outback still serve these and more functions. But what was once a tavern serving food to travellers morphed into an inexpensive and family-friendly way of eating – that is, once women were allowed to drink outside of the lounge in the 1970s. Traditional pub fare of this time, I remember, was Curried Sausages and Mash Potato, Curried Prawns and Rice and the Roast of the Day. Then we had a wave of gastro pubs in the 1980s where the Steak Dianne and Pork Roast morphed into Steak Tartare and the Pork Belly with Wilted Greens. We stopped drinking Riesling and Claret and started sipping Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. In the 1990s we moved into an era of big clubs and big pubs doing their best to woo

the punter with cheap meals, cheap beer and pokies. This trend just gathered momentum in the 2000s, with sporting clubs as well as pubs becoming hubs of the community, serving reasonably priced food and beverages. The Chicken Parmigiana was, and still, is king, followed closely by Beer Battered Fish and Chips, and of course Steak and Chips. In the 2010s, there is a new beast in town – the craft beer bar, where you can have an IPA to wash down their Charcuterie platter and a dozen freshly shucked coffin bay oysters. But wherever you decide to go, a great pub offers great food, hospitable staff, a cold beer and a friendly atmosphere, and that does not matter who or where you come from. They offer a warm and friendly welcome to all. Check out our Pub Picks and maybe get out this weekend and reacquaint yourself with some local pubs, talk to the locals and have a great time. Bon Appetit.

Hotel HQ, 21 Kingston Rd, Underwood, Ph: 3457 0000 has been renovated of late. They have a very stylish bistro and a great deck, which is perfect for a relaxing weekend drink or week-day dinner.

Fitzy’s Loganholme, cnr of Bryants Rd and Pacific Hwy, Loganholme, Ph: 3209 8022, has been renovated over the last couple of years and serves a great selection in their Roadhouse Grill, with friendly, helpful staff.

Green Beacon Brewing Co., at 26 Helen St, Teneriffe, is great for some locally brewed beer and platters of oysters and charcuterie.

If a child is living with obesity and continues on this path into adulthood, they are more likely to face a string of medical issues. One way to get our kids into good health and fitness habits is to role model and get the whole family involved. Melissa Buckley, from Go Health Clubs in Springwood who do mixed martial arts for kids aged 3 to 12, says, “Fitness is so good for kids for the social aspect as well as the benefit of starting them in good habits early on.” Kenneth Wood from Woodeez Health & Fitness in Underwood also runs kids fitness classes that are centred round fun activities aimed to grab kids’ attention and keep them stimulated while getting outdoors and using their bodies. “It can be difficult to get the kids motivated at times, but getting them involved in things they will enjoy like team sports or doing things with the family or with their friends can really get them enjoying fitness.”

Getting kids active in a fun way

Encouraging at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day is important for a child’s health and development, and there are many ways to get that hour in. While adults pump it out

at the gym, kids’ fitness is centred round fun and how to enjoy physical activity. Riding bikes, joining a soccer team or even basketball in the backyard are a few of the many ways to enjoy exercise with your kids. Melissa says, “Parents can get lazy and think that school is enough exercise for their kids, but by being a good role model and getting out and about their kids will automatically copy them.” Kenneth is taking child fitness a step further with his development of a kids’ boot camp in a bid to get local kids on the right path with their fitness. “We provide kids’ fitness to over 5 year olds on Fridays where we play games to help increase motor skills. We break down our sessions so they do agility, body weight exercises and core stability. Kids obviously can’t do the same intense workouts that adults do, so we create child-friendly activities that will get them moving while keeping within their limitations.”

This year size does matter. Get the biggest, longest scarf you can find and embrace its length or use it to wrap a few times around your neck for a fuller look. When choosing a scarf for this winter try looking for striking patterns that have become a fashion must for winter, as well as an eye-catching colour. Colour is immensely important, and while it can be tempting to sway towards a dark colour you must fight that urge. www.rumorsboutique.com.au www.sobidah.com

Hats are HUGE this season and possibly one of the most important accessories for your winter collection. Not only will the perfect hat add another level to your outfit they are also practical in hiding your hair in terrible weather conditions. Going for a burgundy, black, navy or similar rich colour will complement any outfit and pave the way for your bright scarf. www.asos.com/AU

Most women will own a black pair, but this winter why not upgrade to a deep colour like dark navy, purple or grey (flattering). www.boohoo.com

Ponchos will be HUGE this winter. They are easy to throw on, run out the door and bring a touch of glam to any outfit. Teamed with amazing accessories ponchos will be your go-to winter look as they are the perfect partner to well-fitting jeans. www.bikinionthebeach.com.au

Scientific research found that if you change your motivational mindset, you can improve your well-being drastically.

So how can you optimise your happiness quotient?

Good news! Happiness starts with simple changes to your thinking and to your healthy life habits. First, you must decide you want to be happy and take ownership of how you feel. Practice being happy until it becomes a daily habit. You will start to feel more relaxed, more spiritually and emotionally attuned and more at peace with yourself and with others. 1. Define what happiness really means for you. It means different things to different people. Having clarity around this is vitally important so you know what you’re specifically working towards. 2. Tell yourself you’re going to be happy. Fill your head with positive self-talk. Fake it until you make it. Wake up expecting to be happy. Smile every day.

3. Live in the here and now. Be mindful of what’s around you and be self-aware. Don’t live in the past or the future. Savour every precious moment. Be grateful for everything in your life. Experience life through your five senses. 4. Exercise! Exercise! Exercise! Start your day moving your body. Walk, swim, stretch, dance or peddle. Tap into those feel-good hormones, endorphins and serotonins to experience a natural high. 5. When you spend on yourself, choose experiences over stuff and things. Take a road trip with friends. Live real-life experiences with real people you care about. 6. Give to others instead of getting something for yourself. Be kind to everyone and to yourself. Buy your friend a coffee. Pick flowers from your garden to give to someone.

7. Look for opportunities to earn the pleasures in your life. Reward yourself with completing a task. Take a scented bath. Indulge in a massage. 8. Learn to live with less. Appreciate nature, animals, fresh air and natural things. Pat a dog, grow a garden and enjoy a glorious sunset. Every day is precious. 9. Set your goals a little higher. Strive more to succeed. Overcome obstacles and experience the satisfaction of achieving your goals. 10.Sleep better. Restful sleep increases your happiness quotient, your ability to cope and make decisions, lifts your mood and improves concentration, memory and brain performance. To improve your sleep, try meditation, a warm bath and turning off all electronic devices an hour before bedtime. This week’s challenge is... to actively seek more happiness because by doing that, you’re more likely to enjoy more happiness. Taking Better Photos HOLIDAY ESCAPES

Tips for memorable holiday snaps

Below: Pike Market Place, Seattle Right: Solitude in Union Square, San Francisco Wayne Budge Photography

with Wayne Budge

T

aking holiday photos is all about capturing and keeping your memories, so here are a few things you need to remember! Know your camera: Most of us buy a new camera before travelling. But make sure you familiarise yourself with it. Not long ago, a week before some friends travelled overseas with us, they bought a new DSLR. “George” declined my offer to explain its features and happily took lots of pics and videos with the new camera’s movie function. When our holiday was over and we were heading back to the airport, George asked how he could view and play back the videos he’d shot during the holiday. To his dismay, he discovered he should have pressed the record button on the camera and not just flicked the switch to video mode and pointed the camera. His video memories were lost forever. Moral of the story: Give yourself plenty of time to know how your camera works before you leave for your trip. Take shots early morning or late arvo: The best time of day to capture great photos is either early morning or late afternoon as

the sun at midday can be quite harsh for photos. In saying this, always make sure you have your camera with you at any time of the day in case any interesting shot presents itself. You can never take too many photos! Try different angles: Ditch the usual photos of the kids in front of a landmark – be more creative! If in Italy, shoot the Trevi Fountain from a different angle or have the kids splashing some water. This makes the photo a little more interesting than the old boring postcard pic. Take photos with signs in them: This will help you in years to come when your memory isn’t that flash to remember where you were at that particular place and time. Use the “Rule of Thirds”: Consider the composition of your shots. Don’t always photograph your subject such as a person or an object in the middle of the frame. In a nutshell, the “Rule of Thirds” explains that a shot may be more interesting if the subject is positioned a third of the way along the top, bottom or side of the frame. Take photos of food: Many times we come back from holidays and try to explain to our family and friends what the food

was like. On a recent trip to the USA, I was wandering through a market and came across a fruit and vegie stall. The produce was amazing and nothing like what we would see in our local supermarket. So what did I do? I took a photo to show everybody back home. Like me, they loved the ‘Pleeza No Squeeza’ sign on the avocados! Experiment with your cameras settings: Don’t just always shoot on “green”. There are usually creative modes on your camera such as landscape, portrait, night and macro. Don’t be afraid to use them. You might find you’ll end up with a better photo. Learn about ISO, aperture and shutter speed. When shooting in manual, knowledge of these three things is essential in understanding exposure. Please contact me if you have any travel topics of interest. Until next time, happy and safe travels! Family Healing Meditation

Mums’ Numbers The changing roles of the mother

SOUL

with Dawn Alice

T

he core role of mothers is interchangeable regardless of culture, nationality and generation. Number 6 females have a predisposition to love unconditionally, so it is foreseeable that nurturing comes naturally to most Number 6 mothers. Number 6s are old-fashioned, familyorientated people who have a sense of pride. Artistic talents and creativity are important to counteract their nerves and apprehension as they are the ‘worriers’ of numerology. These mothers have difficulty when the offspring leave the nest. The current mother is somewhat more of an individual and is expected to juggle the various roles of present-day life. It was scarce to see a working mother when I was young and unthinkable when my grandmother raised my mother. Number 1 and Number 8 women have slipped into the contemporary role with ease and flow.

Healing Tools of Numerology and Tarot

An extract from the book, Life Love Tarot

3

Close your eyes; relax. Imagine yourself in the garden of the Empress. • Take a few deep breaths; welcome the scent of the flowers. Within this garden is a clear pond that you can see your reflection in. This image is looking back at you with unconditional love. Blow your reflection a kiss. • Now imagine this pool filling with impressions of your family. Which relations are in the pond? Send each and every one a kiss.

The Number 3 mother is somewhat more relaxed than Number 6. Number 3 contains sustenance needed for social growth. The Number 3 tarot card, the Empress, is a representation of a mother figure providing love and encouragement. The optimistic feel of this card encourages social gatherings and family events, with an emphasis towards healing.

8

• Imagine any family members who have been separated from you through hurt and pain. Direct your unconditional love and forgiveness towards them. • Watch their faces light up with happiness as they receive your gift of healing.

Families

Families don’t always have to be blood related; we all have people in our life with a spiritual connection stronger than blood relatives do. But kinsfolk are important, no matter what their shortcomings are. They can be exasperating, but we cannot do without loved ones to share our special moments. If you are holding hurts within your family, the unconditional love of the Mother Empress encourages you to heal your pain. Ask yourself if you feel bitter, jealous or envious towards any family members. Are you harbouring guilt from situations you might not have had control over?

6

• Mother Empress hands you a seedling to plant. This tiny shrub begins to grow before your very eyes. Watching it rapidly producing abundant vegetation gives you a sense of the love in your heart. You are reaching out to those who have hurt you, or you have offended. • To empower this meditation, you might like to buy a seedling to plant and nurture.

If you are lonely and alienated from family, consider doing the meditation above and a healing will occur. What an ideal Mother’s Day gift!

Exchange students and homestay opportunities Host families and international students all benefit from heartwarming exchanges

here are many ways to learn about foreign countries and cultures. But according to a growing number of students and families, few can compare with the experience of living with a family overseas or opening your home to an overseas student. Each year homestay, study tour groups and student exchange programs are undertaken in dozens of countries worldwide including France, Denmark and Japan. Stays can last from one week to one year, and a range of agencies exist to facilitate the process and ensure that it runs smoothly for students and host families. Mari Yanagisawa from Australia Japan Study Program (AJSP) believes that the growing popularity of the programs lies in the opportunity they provide to foster close relationships between families and students, whilst “creating a fantastic opportunity for the host families to experience another culture”. For the student who is far from home there is also an opportunity for tremendous personal growth and learning.

The Panić family from Rochedale recently participated in a homestay program where they shared their home with a Japanese student named Kazuma for 10 days. Although he spoke little English, 15-year-old Kazuma was able to impart the Japanese language and culture to the family. Nathalie and Doug Panić agree that “we now have a different view of who a Japanese person is. There is a big difference between reading about it in a book and experiencing a real person”. For their family, Kazuma’s stay was like “a little trip overseas”. Swiss-born Nathalie understands the challenges faced by homestay and exchange students as she participated in a student exchange with a Swiss-German family when she was 17. She recalls the demands of lodging with a family who are conversing in a foreign language. “When you are living overseas with a family who speak a different language and the culture is different to your own, everything is a challenge and unfamiliar. It takes a lot of effort to try to understand

a fraction of what is happening around you,” Nathalie explains. “Students such as Kazuma should feel a huge sense of pride in what they have achieved because coping with a new culture and unfamiliar language is a huge accomplishment.” Many families avoid the opportunity to conduct a homestay due to uncertainty about how to keep the overseas student engaged and occupied, but the Panić family are keen to provide encouragement. “You don’t have to do anything fancy because it’s the normal stuff that these kids really want to experience,” explains Nathalie. According to Mari it is not uncommon for students and families to become “friends for a lifetime”, which provides the ultimate reward for everyone involved. Nathalie and Doug describe watching their children, Galen (11) and Isabella (9), bond with Kazuma as a “heartwarming” experience. “I could see the planet getting smaller before my eyes,” says Nathalie, adding that the family are remaining in touch with Kazum via email and hope to visit him.

Career Choices SKILLS & TRAINING

Is knowing your personality type a key to choosing the right career?

with Lisa-Marie Kerr

T

here are a plethora of careers to choose from these days. The world is your oyster. But how do you go about knowing which career is potentially most suited to you? Could it really be as simple as doing a career personality test to find your ideal career? When deciding on career options or courses, we can be influenced by family, lifechanging events, environment and finances. However, getting to know yourself better first is always a great place to start. Personality tests can give you great insight into yourself, relationships, work, life, stress triggers and stress management solutions.

Personality tests and types

Personality tests were developed in the 1920s and were intended to assist with the process of personnel selection as they reveal aspects of an individual’s character. Since the 1920s a wide variety of tests have been formulated with one of the most famous being the “Myers Briggs Type Indicator”. A personality test like Myer Briggs can offer

some guidance on careers that may suit you based on your personality. The tests were pretty spot on for me. Apparently I am an ENFP: Extroverted, Intuitive, Feeling and Perceiving. (Nickname: The Inspirer) The Inspirer is projectdriven and works best where there is flexibility and they can work with people and ideas. They can be productive without supervision, as long as they are excited! Possible career paths for the ENFP include: Consultant, psychologist, entrepreneur, actor, teacher, counsellor, politician, writer, scientist and artist. For those interested in a career path in health, it would be interesting to see if you are an ISFJ (Introverted Sensing Feeling Judging). Nickname: The Nurturer. ISFJs are very interested and in-tune with other’s feelings and enjoy creating structure and order. Possible career paths for the ISFJs include nurses, child care workers, social workers, counsellors and administrative assistants. Whatever your personality, if you wish to work in the health industry there is a wide range of job roles within the industry suiting many personality types.

Where to have a personality test

Choosing a career is a detailed process that I recommend undertaking with a trained professional such as a career counsellor, guidance office at school or a psychologist. They are often trained in using a number of personality tests and can help you with interpreting the outcomes and how to implement them in your life. If you have a family psychologist, start there. If you can’t access a professional you can utilise some fantastic personality tests “free” online, for example www.truity.com. Or simply Google ‘free personality tests’. Once you have done one and know your TYPE

code, then Google other websites for deeper interpretations and further clarity. If you don’t agree with the outcome of any personality test, don’t follow it. You know yourself best.

Imagine yourself in the job

Research the roles they suggest, imagine yourself in the job, go out and ask questions of people already working in those careers and then gauge how it makes you feel. Can you see yourself in that role day in and day out? Let’s face it, we are all so very unique and a personality test can only ever be a tool to help you explore your options. In the end you are the master of your destiny.

Interior Decorating LIVING

Top 5 common mistakes and solutions

with Robyn Pacey AFTER

What defines a mistake when decorating a room in your house? There are many factors that can either enhance or reduce the aesthetics of a space. Pattern disasters

Putting too many patterns together in the one area, for example, choosing busy wallpaper and layering it in front of a busy fabric on a couch, is very confusing on the eye. Limit patterns to just one within a room, or if you must use more, combining one large and one small pattern is the way to a designer look.

Uniformity

Using the same kinds of timber in bedroom suites, such as the bed frame, bedside tables, tallboy and chest of drawers, suggests formalness and looks quite uniform and possibly a bit boring. However, there is very

22

little overall design required to make the room pop. Try using different shapes and types of material finishes, such as glass or chrome on the bedside tables, to add interest and more individuality to a room.

Non-matching feature walls

Painting a feature wall in an area where other furnishings and colours do not match appears to look rather odd. I have seen this done in many homes where owners will decide they like a particular colour, and so a wall is turned into the ‘focal point’ of the room. Consideration of existing colours is a must when applying colour to such a large area.

Clutter

Get rid of clutter. Learning from the “Less is more” phase is a good way to see what materials can be updated, re-used or recycled, although it becomes impossible if surfaces are covered with junk. You may find a real treasure underneath that could be sanded back, re-stained and turned into a beautiful piece of furniture.

Compulsive buying

Purchasing random decorative items because you like them and not because they’ll actually look good in the home is a big no. Think about the space you want to decorate and how the item will tie in with colours seen elsewhere in the room. Ask yourself if there is a specific place that will suit the item before spending money on it. A good decorating tip is to spend time in planning your space. Find pictures of the things you would like to see in your room from magazines or brochures and glue them into a scrapbook. Then you will see how they all look together. Simple planning can save precious time and it can be very satisfying when you see how all the components work together to make your room look great. If you feel that you are really struggling to get your room to look right, consult an interior decorator to help you achieve the style you are after. After all, it is your environment and you are the one that has to feel comfortable and love the space you live in.
