Back in time Chocolate originates from the cacao bean, or technically the Theobroma Cacao tree seed, in Central America and dates back over 100 million years. The beans are encased in small pumpkin sized orange/red pods and are intensely bitter to eat. The Mayans would use these beans as currency and they were immensely valuable. The seeds are rich in caffeine, antioxidants, magnesium and vitamin C, along with many other vitamins and minerals. The cacao drink was introduced to Europe’s wealthy society who loved the bold flavours and richness of the drink. In 1689 milk was added to the chocolate drink along with sugar, making it similar to the popular hot chocolate we know and love today. By 1830 British chocolate makers had invented a way to turn the chocolate into a solid and by 1875 the Swiss added milk and
chocolate bars were introduced to the world. Raw cacao and all of its components morphed from currency in Central America into a 98.3 billion dollar industry.
Health benefits We have all heard the negatives associated with chocolate and its relationship with obesity, acne, diabetes and a string of other health conditions. However, this may only be linked with the more artificial chocolate on the market and mainly chocolate that has had milk protein added to it. Research into dark chocolate has found its rich antioxidants, vitamins and minerals have immense health benefits. Proclaimed as a super food, dark chocolate, mainly those with over 80 per cent cocoa, can assist with health issues such as cholesterol, cardiovascular health, ageing,

YES, and here’s why. We crave chocolate because it smells, looks and tastes incredible and appeals to all of our major senses. Studies into the effect that chocolate has on the brain have found that chocolate releases feel good endorphins, like dopamine, which are also released during pleasurable experiences like laughing, kissing and sex. A study done by Max Brenner found that fifteen per cent of Aussies are craving chocolate daily compared with a mere eight per cent having the same consistent urge for sex. Almost one in five people say they devour chocolate four or five times per week. This statistic pushes chocolate to the head of the craving pack in front of booze, which is massive for Australians with our wellknown love of a cold beer. Studies also suggest that women enjoy chocolate more than men because women have a heightened sense of smell

Chocolaterias are often hard to miss with the rich smell of coffee and chocolate oozing out of their doors. This form of dessert dining has boomed in the Australian market and especially in the Brisbane dining scene, which has seen increasing amounts of chocolate cafes popping up over the past few years. Not only a place to devour some of the best desserts in Brisbane but also a place to catch up with family and friends, these chocolaterias have brought a sense of luxury to the cafe scene. One of the most notable chocolate cafes and a local Brisbane icon, Poppy’s Chocolate in Beenleigh, has created an Australian driven range of luxury desserts. Celebrating their tenth birthday in July, Poppy’s was one of the very first chocolate cafes established in Australia and the booming business is a symbol of the true love people have for this decadent dessert. Owner, Lynda Bos, was inspired by her love of chocolate to bring something new to Brisbane, “Where a lot of the other chocolate cafes in Australia are inspired by Belgium, at Poppy’s we are inspired by our Australian roots. Australians love fruit and we bring that element to our amazing looking and tasting chocolate.” “A lot of people ask me why I haven’t gotten fat eating as much chocolate as I do and the answer

in comparison to their male counterparts and get more from the chocolate experience. Due to the indulgence factor of chocolate it is considered to be a luxury food that shouldn’t be eaten often and this can lead to intense cravings. Research into the consumption of chocolate reveals that almost half of all adults have fibbed about how much chocolate they are consuming. A third of people snack on the way home and then half of these people will hide the wrappers to hide how much they are consuming. Australians spend an average of four billion dollars a year on this decadent luxury and chocolate has become the hardest indulgence to give up, overtaking alcohol, caffeine and even sex. Chocolate is a food of the world and is enjoyed passionately on a global level. No other food can connect people on this level and also offer powerful health benefits. It’s a true super food with components we are just starting to understand. It’s safe to say that this powerful tree seed will continue to evolve as we do and who can guess the ways it will influence our lives in the future.

stress and diabetes to name a few. When trying to reap the benefits of chocolate it’s important to have dark chocolate with as close to 100 per cent cocoa as possible, the minimal amount of refinement means more nutrients kept in the product ensuring greater the health rewards. Health expert and owner of Livity Gym in Slacks Creek, Andrew Ryan, believes that the antioxidants in chocolate have immense health benefits for the body. “Chocolate is the highest antioxidant food in the world. It has 15 times more than blueberries, 20 times more than green tea and a huge 30 times more than red wine,” he says. “Chocolate is the number one food for your heart and is a natural source of magnesium and iron.” If the health benefits of chocolate weren’t enough to convince anyone that they shouldn’t feel guilty about indulging, Andrew also says that chocolate is good for de-stressing the mind and body.

Pack of Lies Expect the unexpected in Sunnybank Theatre Group’s new drama
H
ow would you react if you found out that things around you were not as they seemed? Such is the premise for Pack of Lies, the latest dramatic thriller offered by the Sunnybank Theatre Group. The play is based upon true events which took place in London in the early 1960s, when two Russian spies were arrested and convicted of espionage. A decade later English playwright and screenwriter, Hugh Whitmore, was commissioned by the BBC to write a one hour television program titled Act of Betrayal based on these events. The program was so successful that Whitmore developed it into the full length play Pack of Lies. In 1987, it also became the basis of a full length film of the same name with Ellen Burstyn and Teri Garr. Pack of Lies is set in the London home shared by Bob and Barbara Jackson and their daughter, Julie. The Jackson family is plunged into uncertainty when the authorities request that their home be used as a surveillance point to observe undisclosed illegal activity of a person of interest in their neighborhood. Tensions are heightened when they struggle to understand why the person
of interest is in contact with their dearest friends, a Canadian couple who live nearby. According to Director and Sunnybank Theatre Group President, Chris Guyler, “Our audiences will be captivated by this intriguing, compelling drama and the fascinating way the writer draws us into the lives of a family whose suburban domesticity is confronted with such a compelling and intense situation.” Pack of Lies has all the trademark ingredients of a Sunnybank Theatre Group dramatic thriller, providing an intimate theatre experience where clever lighting and strong dramatic performances guarantee that audiences will be on the edge of their seats until the end of the final act.
Entertaining Brisbane for half a century The Sunnybank Theatre has been providing quality live theatre to Brisbane for almost fifty years. According to Chris Guyler, “The purpose of the theatre is to provide entertainment in a friendly atmosphere of fun and professionalism,

Add value and don’t break the bank!
Why your credit history is so valuable
Headache vs Migraine – How to tell them apart?
If you want to add value to your biggest asset – your home – and do it quickly, without the need for a major renovation or spending thousands, here are some easy-to-follow tips. You are often not the best person to pass a critical eye over your property before embarking on any improvements. In most cases, it helps to have a friend or real estate agent go through the property with a notebook and jot down everything they think needs improving, as well as the wow factors. First impressions do count, so tidy or landscape the front yard, paint the fence and gate, and clean the windows, front porch, gutters, front door, exterior walls and woodwork. Ensure the house is clearly numbered. A well-maintained yard, lawns and gardens are vital, and a defined outdoor area with table and chairs is very important in Queensland, even if it’s a small area. Rearrange furniture to make each room look bigger and aid traffic flow. Ensure your kitchen and bathrooms are thoroughly cleaned and have a fresh appearance, with uncluttered benches and shelves. Wash down any grubby marks from the internal walls and touch up with paint where necessary. Create spaces that allow easy access and open blinds and curtains to let in plenty of natural light. The impression you want people to have when they visit your property is that it is welcoming and comfortable – a property that they would like to live in. So roll up your sleeves and get stuck in with a bit of “elbow grease”, which may help to get that SOLD sign on your property quicker than you think.
Latin Writer Publilius Syrus once wrote that “a good reputation is more valuable than money”. In a sense, when applying for credit in Australia, this statement has clout. Credit Reporting plays a big part in the application process when applying for finance. It tells a lender what your past conduct with credit has been like (i.e. your reputation) and consequently, if you’ll be a good candidate for a home loan. In the past, credit reporting would only look at the negatives: defaults and bankruptcies. As of March 2014, however, amendments to the Privacy Act brought about Positive Credit Reporting and now lenders can see the good, bad and ugly. Some of these include if you pay your monthly bills on time, when you’ve applied for credit, if you were successful or declined and the amount of credit that you applied for. With your credit ‘reputation’ now on full display, it’s important to protect it and maintain a positive credit rating. Some tips on how to do this so you’re in a good position to obtain a home loan include getting a copy of your credit report so you know where you stand, setting up direct debits from your account so regular bills are paid on time, knowing your credit commitments and only applying for credit when you can afford it.
Ever wonder whether you suffer from headaches or migraines? Migraines affect approximately 1 billion people worldwide and are regarded as more serious than headaches. Their severity and effects have often caused sufferers to experience job loss and even marital breakdown. Sound familiar? If you suffer from migraines you may experience some or all of the following: • Pain on one side of the head • Nausea and vomiting • Sensitivity to light, sound or smell • Speech disturbances • Visual disturbances such as seeing spots or lines Headaches, also known as tension type headaches, are more common than migraines, affecting approximately 1.4 billion people. While headache pain is not as severe as migraine pain, you may experience some of the following: • Pain on both sides of the head that can last up to 7 days • Pain that feels like a constant pressure or tightening of the head • Sensitivity to light, sound or smell Too often headache sufferers are diagnosed incorrectly and therefore given the wrong treatment. Specific types of headache conditions require different treatment in order to effectively stop them for good. If you haven’t had your headaches professionally diagnosed and still live with headaches, we strongly recommend you have your headaches assessed by an expert headache clinician.

Skin Scars A scar is a result of the body’s natural healing process, where damage to the skin or area beneath the skin has occurred. What you notice as the scar is generally a build-up of the collagen fibres that your body has laid down to repair a wound. What types of scars are there? Since a scar can form from the healing of almost any skin trauma, there are many different types of scars. Causes of scars can include: • surgical procedures • skin cancer removal flap surgery • injuries to skin (or even damage to muscle or fat below skin) • acne • chicken pox • insect bites • stretch marks (from pregnancy or growth spurt)

Create Your Taste at McDonald’s Gourmet Writer Suzanne Walker discovers a new concept at local McDonald’s
T
here is something different about McDonald’s at Logan Central. Just three weeks ago, local business woman, Janelle MacGinley , launched a new concept in four of her local McDonald’s, which is now available at all Queensland freestanding McDonald’s restaurants— the Create Your Taste menu. McDonald’s new concept of “Create Your Taste” is a whole new way to experience fast food. When I walked in, a polite young man, Sam, offered to show me how to operate one of the four new kiosks. These are large touch screen displays that allow you to order your own Create Your Taste burger as well as order traditional items from the menu. I think that McDonald’s is such an institution in Australia that people know what they order and rarely break out of that habit. But this new concept in how we order allows us to see the diversity of product that McDonald’s now offers.

5 easy steps to create your own gourmet burger
Uniquely Designed and Crafted for You! Award Winning Jewellers
Shop 4, 3370 Pacific Hwy, Springwood QLD 4127 (next to Thai Orchid)
Ph: 3290 1634
There are five simple steps. (1) “Choose your bun”: toasted brioche, bakers or a lettuce wrap for those who are gluten free or just avoiding carbs. (2) “Make it Cheesy”: Choose from five different cheeses including parmesan, cheddar, or Swiss. (3) “Turn up the taste”: Add an extra burger, guacamole, bacon, mushrooms, pineapple, egg. (4) “Fresh’n it up”: Add pickles, jalapenos, red onion or other salad items. (5) Choose from one of seven sauces including aioli, chipotle mayo, tomato and chilli jam.
At each stage of ordering you can see what you have ordered on a panel at the side of the screen. You can also order the entire menu from the touch screen, from traditional burgers to Happy Meals through to coffee and cake from the cafe. After either paying at the terminal with your credit card or paying by cash at a designated cashier at the counter, you can take a seat and your entire order will be brought over to you. No more waiting in line to order or to pick up. And the best bit is you can create your own burger, just how you like it, without the pressure of ordering at the counter. The result is a true gourmet burger, not just because you have chosen the ingredients, but also how it is prepared on a flat top grill with the cheese melted onto the burger patty—the result is very delicious.
80 new local jobs created Janelle said that some customers have expressed concern that by ordering at the kiosks they might be depriving a job for someone at the counter. On the contrary, since the introduction of “Create Your Taste”, she has employed 20 more people at each of her stores at Logan Central, Marsden, Beenleigh and Holmview, where Janelle and her husband employ more than 400 people from the local community. McDonald’s is a great supporter of the community, with fund raising events for local charities, movie nights and theme days for sporting events. So, I would highly recommend that you experience the “Create your Taste” burgers at McDonald’s. You will not only enjoy a new gourmet burger, but will be supporting a local business in our local community. Bon Appetite!

Why professional nannies providing at-home child care should be a tax deduction
C
hild care availability, accessibility and affordability remain an on-going challenge in Australia. For many working mothers there are serious obstacles to their ability to return to work. Mothers who are educated, qualified and skilled are entitled to both motherhood and a career. It would be such a sad waste if they were not able to be employed and their talents utilised due to child care issues.
Home care services by nannies subsidised Child care should not be dismissed as just a woman’s issue; it is a social issue and in Australia, it is an industry heading towards a crisis point. This is the reason that in April 2015, the federal government announced a $246 million 2-year pilot program to extend subsidy support to home care services provided by nannies. The Government’s proposed change to child care and the inclusion of nannies into mainstream discussions surrounding child care is welcome, aligning both the care needs of working families with professional standards. A lack of access, flexibility and surging costs for working parents
had meant that a growing number of parents working ‘long-hours’ and ‘after-hours’ resorted to unqualified care. Working life is no longer 9 to 5, Monday to Friday; child care and education must evolve to assist families. For a growing number of families, employing a nanny is the only suitable form of child care available to meet the needs of a growing number of parents working hours that do not match with traditional child care arrangements. It should not be the venue that determines whether parents are eligible for Commonwealth support, rather the quality of the care they receive.
Professional training for nannies CHARLTON BROWN® believes that subsidies for nannies are excellent, but reforms need to go further. CHARLTON BROWN® nannies, like all child care workers, are educators. Their nannies
Community Services, Health and Social Assistance: Australia’s largest employer
are appropriately trained to ensure that the children they look after are stimulated mentally and physically to reach their developmental milestones. Recognition of nannies and educators as a niche profession is crucial to the industry during this period of growth and reform. Parents want the peace of mind that, firstly, people going into child care are the right kind of people and, secondly, they are qualified to educate and protect their child. Graduates of CHARLTON BROWN® College participate in a complimentary Safety First Program, providing the skills and knowledge to ensure that they and the children they care for remain safe. The CHARLTON BROWN® ‘Safety First Program’ is unique as it focuses on potential risk areas and has been created with leading industry experts. The ‘Safety First Program’ includes; water safety, fire safety, personal safety, cyber safety, First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis. Doing the right thing in those vital first moments after an accident could mean the difference between life and death. While we still need to look for ways to make child care more affordable for all, the reality is simply that there isn’t any government in the world that has the unlimited resources that would be required to support nation wide community services – of which one is child care. By increasing the participation of women in the workforce, the government would be increasing the pool of taxation. Charlton Brown Contact: Amina Kerr (Operations Manager) Amina@charltonbrown.com.au

W
e all want the benefits of beauty treatments but often the hefty price tags can mean we are missing out, but NO MORE! In your pantry right now is a bounty of products that will give you glowing skin, soft feet and shiny hair. Consider your pantry as your new, all natural beauty case, rich in vitamins and minerals that can bring life back into your winter damaged body. Winter takes its toll on the body and taking some time out to refresh is more important than ever.
Glowing skin cleanser Simply combine these pantry ingredients and let them do their magic while you sit back at home and relax. 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp cucumber mashed, 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp cinnamon and 1 tbsp baking soda. Combine all ingredients together then apply to fresh, clean skin. Massage into your face for 2-3 minutes then rinse off and give your skin a good moisturise. The key vitamins and minerals in these ingredients deeply nourish skin and bring out a gorgeous natural glow.
Dry hair mask To achieve soft, nourished and silky hair, simply combine 3 tbsp of olive oil with 2 eggs and apply to your hair. Relax and put your feet up and 2030 minutes later rinse out with cool water. Olive oil is super hydrating for hair and will give it a beautiful shine. Eggs are full of protein, which is essential to rebuilding broken ends and promoting good hair health.
Foot soaker and moisturiser Say goodbye to dry, cracked feet with this special potion. Simply add ¼ cup of Listerine mouthwash and ¼ cup of vinegar mixed into ½ cup of warm or hot water. Soak your dry feet for approximately 15 minutes then wipe clean. The dead skin will practically fall off before your eyes. For more
stubborn areas lightly buff with an exfoliating stone then generously moisturise and massage your feet for a result you will be amazed by.
Exfoliating body scrub Nothing is better than the soft, smooth skin that follows a good exfoliation. Combine ¾ cup of coffee grounds and ¼ cup of brown sugar with a small amount of olive oil to transform it into a thick paste. Go to town with this scrub all over your body. It fights cellulite and moisturises all at once, and by following up with a good moisturising cream you will see the true benefits that pantry products have to offer.

Women in Business Showcasing women leading the way in business on the Southside
A
s clients or customers of a business, we often like to know the person behind the business and organisation. In fact, they are often the very reason why we choose one service over another. This month’s Women in Business feature showcases leading local business women, their achievements, what makes them tick and what they are offering. 58.6 percent of women are participating in the workforce and here on the Southside many of these are leading the way in innovation and entrepreneurial activities.
success of their businesses. Values are high on their agenda and more often than not are a driver in choosing their place of work or the type of business they establish, and even how they run it. Women know the power of giving and contribution is often a big part of their business model. Who women have on their team is important for them; there has to be synergy and cohesion in values amongst team members. Making a connection with clients is usually number one.
The strengths of women in business Women have been at the forefront of business in Australia for decades. Most of us can remember the lady who ran the local corner shop in our youth or our local hairdresser. Now, more than ever, Australia is seeing a rise in the number of women running and working in a wide variety of businesses. Many are leaders in strategic positions within all sectors from small business to corporate, public and not-for-profit. Women are natural leaders and are ideal for running their own businesses and being in management roles. They are also excellent networkers, communicators and collaborators. Yes, most women have the gift of the gab and know how to leverage this to the

What Women Bring to Business Not afraid to take action Aren’t afraid to ask for help Trust their intuition Relationship builders & collaborators Natural multitaskers Know the power of giving
Role models and trailblazers The paths many of the women in our feature have taken to be leaders in their field are varied. One woman has worked in her family business since being a teenager, taking on her parents’ vision and bringing the business forward to be an industry leader and local community icon. Another began voluntary work earlier on in life, helping migrant women, and now finds herself in a
senior management role within the not-for-profit sector and the recipient of an OAM. One has been the very successful Mayor of Logan for six years. One Woman in Business worked her way up from a secretarial role to General Manager through her exemplary level of care toward the business, staff and customers. She knew that people never forget how you make them feel. Many of these women have done all this while raising families or going through very personal challenges. Their vision and passion got them through plus, in this day and age of the single parent family, a strong survivor spirit. These women set an example for girls and women that, with vision, passion, values and maximising on innate skills, they can achieve whatever they put their minds to. More than that, they can make an invaluable contribution to economic growth and creating a thriving, diverse and connected community.

G Gail Ker Chief Executive Officer
Access Community Services Ltd 92 Wembley Road, Logan Central Qld 4114 P: (07) 3412 8222 www.accesscommunity.com.au
ail Ker OAM is the CEO of Access Community Services Ltd, one of the largest multicultural organisations in Queensland. Her experience in providing innovative service solutions for newly arrived entrants and migrants has been recognised nationally through receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). She has also been appointed to numerous boards and positions in various community and sporting organisations. Gail’s passion for community and volunteering began as a child, raised in a family regularly involved in community events and fundraising. Prior to her role in Access, Gail was engaged in a mentoring project, a specialist job club to assist migrant women. It was here her passion for assisting migrant and refugee women was fuelled. She could see the potential and skills many of these women have but often don’t recognise, let alone know how to utilise, in a business context due to barriers of language, culture, self-esteem and simply just being mums at home. Her passion is to be a voice for women. The women’s voice in leadership can be few and quiet, more so with refugee and migrant women. The inspirational aspect of Gail’s work is to give these women a platform to have that voice. “If I can use my role to champion these women to have a role, that is very gratifying for me,” says Gail. “Many migrant entrepreneurs have a great capacity for business – I want to open doors for them.”

passion for helping people and a desire to see her city grow and prosper was the motivation behind Cr Pam Parker’s decision to run for Mayor of Logan City in 2008 – a contest she won resoundingly. Re-elected unopposed in 2012, Mayor Pam Parker became known as ‘the people’s Mayor’, and often cites her love of the city when she refers to Logan as ‘the heart of South-East Queensland with a community spirit second to none.’ Sadly for many though, Pam recently announced she would not be contesting the 2016 election. Reflecting upon her time as Mayor, Pam Parker says she is proud of Logan’s progress during her time at the helm, and is confident the city and its residents have a bright future ahead. “Everything I have done during my time in Council has been to improve the City of Logan and the lives of its residents,” she said. “My message is simple – I want to see ALL our children develop a love of reading and gain a great education, whilst nurturing respect for our seniors. I want a strong economy in Logan that provides bountiful employment, and gives our residents the opportunity for home ownership through diverse housing choices. I also want to see our amazing community spirit grow and flourish in the years ahead.” “This is what I stood for, what I worked for, and what I still stand for today. It is also what I hope the future Council in Logan will continue to stand for.”

rom an early age Alicia Dodd, Facility Manager of the M1 Business Centre, can only remember wanting to be one thing – a primary school teacher. So when she finished high school she went to university to fulfil this dream. However, like many dreams it wasn’t meant to be and she quickly realised that while she still had the desire to help and teach people new skills, her passion was more in the corporate world, managing and supporting those around her. Alicia says, “I learnt many valuable lessons from my Pop, with one big lesson being to learn, every day, whether we’re studying, working or exploring, to keep learning. And this is my aim every day.” So Alicia studies new courses and learns new skills whenever she can, while encouraging the staff she manages to do the same. As a mum of a 4-year-old and 7-year-old, and working full time, Alicia finds life can be crazy. “But I strive for the happy medium. I love my job and I love my children; without both my life wouldn’t be what it is today.” Managing a whole company can be daunting, but Alicia says the rewards far outweigh the concerns. “All hard work has eventual rewards. One day I hope my reward will be not only to manage but also to own a successful business, where I can help others achieve their goals and fulfil their passions in life.”

Less than two years later she was appointed as Sales Manager of Frizelle’s Gold Coast Volkswagen dealership and became General Manger in July 2009. t has been many, many years since Helen Coyne has worked in the world of enterprises, having either been working in the public sector or with charities for the past 15 years. However, as the CEO of MultiLink Community Services Inc., Helen is now heading back that way, leading the not-for-profit service into a hybrid of the for-profit and not-for-profit worlds. This move to the new model has come about due to the Government minimising funding to the sector and funding becoming more competitive. Helen’s background in commerce is extensive having worked in small and medium businesses, such as recruitment firms, as well as having worked for several years marketing and selling high-end computers for an international corporation. This experience puts her in good stead to move MultiLink towards its strategic direction, including geographical and financial growth and self-sustainability. Funds generated by the for-profit enterprise, the enterprising chameleon, will be diverted back to MultiLink to allow unfunded delivery of services. The ability to be nimble and respond to changing environments is a strength of Helen’s and she will use this skill to help MultiLink also be nimble and respond to the needs of the communities they serve.

hiou See Anderson is the Managing Director of Elements Retirement Living in Springwood. While waiting for a review of her application to build a retirement village at Springwood, which had been initially rejected, Chiou See was offered a doctoral scholarship at Bond University into accommodation options for Australia’s ageing population. Such was her passion for the field. The trained CPA delved into understanding the different types of senior accommodation both in Australia and overseas and the intangible offerings that sets a community apart. Chiou See read a huge amount of research material on quality of life and successful ageing. This subsequently sparked the formulation of the ‘elements’ of Elements, which embraces a more holistic approach where she incorporates both the hard (design and construction) elements with soft (social capital, community spirit. wellbeing) elements. Today, Elements is a happy and livable community of over 60 residents who embrace the five elements of successful ageing: Psychological, Physical, Social, Spiritual and Financial wellbeing. Chiou See credits her success to her supportive family, business partners and staff members but most importantly, her helpful and purposeful residents who are generous with their time, wisdom and expertise. In 2010, Chiou See was recognised by the Urban Development Institute of Australia as a Rising Star and in 2013 was presented with the inaugural Gold Coast Women in Business Innovation Award. Gold Coast Hinterland Just over an hour’s drive south from Brisbane and slightly inland, you will come to the Gold Coast hinterland. In the hinterland you will find a myriad of things to do and see such as Gallery Walk in Mt Tamborine where you can visit quaint shops, galleries and eateries. At the end of the day, grab a glass of wine and chill out by the cozy fireplace at one of the local B&B’s or guesthouses. In the morning after breakfast, get the body moving by taking a brisk walk through the rainforest to the beautiful Cedar Creek Falls, or head to Thunderbird Park and fossick for thunder eggs.
A little further through the hinterland you will find more accommodations such as Binna Burra Mountain Lodge, O’Reilly’s, or if you want to get a little more adventurous why not look at Nightfall Wilderness Camp, situated in Lamington National Park. Here you can bushwalk, swim in pristine creeks (summer of course), or even spot a platypus if you’re lucky! Accommodations here are very limited and book out well in advance.

Sunshine Coast and Hinterland
Straddie
Around two hours north of Brisbane you will find the iconic Noosa Heads. The accommodations here are so varied that you can stay in luxury accommodations such as the Sheraton or the Netanya, or if you are limited to a budget then why not stay at Noosaville. Noosaville is only a few minutes from Noosa Heads and accommodation there isn’t as expensive as its neighbour. This area has really grown over the years with lots of coffee shops, cafes and boutiques along the river. Houseboats, boats and kayaks are also available for hire. One thing that is a “must do” is the Everglades Tour. This tour will take you up into the beautiful wilderness areas of the Noosa River where waterways and wildlife meet. It truly is a spectacular way to see this great eco system. From Noosa, why not take a trip into the Sunshine Coast Hinterland where you will find the small towns of Maleny and Montville. These charming towns are home to local artists as well as small boutique business such as antiques, chocolatiers, galleries, jewellery shops and restaurants.
If you feel like getting off the mainland, why not take a short ferry ride with or without your car to Stradbroke Island. This makes an ideal day trip or a short stay where you can camp, fish, swim, surf, bushwalk, whale watch or just relax. Dine on local seafood in a number of café’s, clubs and eateries. It’s all there on Stradbroke including some great accommodations. Stay in beautiful resorts, holiday homes or B&Bs. Buses and car rentals are also available on the island. Vehicular and passenger ferries leave from Cleveland regularly. New Healthy Eating Pyramid offers key to healthy diet
I
n the last six months we have seen the rise of the Paleo, No Sugar, Primal and the 5:2 Diet … to name a few. With so many diets and information, what do you do? Simple answers may be found in the new changes to Nutrition Australia’s Healthy Eating Pyramid and in listening to the needs of your own body.
New nutritional guidelines
The Healthy Eating Pyramid, found on Nutrition Australia’s website, was updated in May – the first major change in 15 years – reflecting the latest research and discoveries in nutrition. Here’s a summary. • Eat mainly vegetables. This is the biggest change. Vegetables, fruit and legumes replace cereals and grains as our main food category, now representing 70 per cent of what we should be eating according to Nutrition Australia. “Plant food contains a wide variety of nutrients like vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are the main sources of carbohydrates and fibre in our diet.” • Eat healthy fats. This is an important distinction from current marketing messages to avoid fats. Our bodies need Essential Fatty Acids to survive and thrive, as found in avocados, nuts, seeds and fish.
• Restrict sugar and salt. Sugar is now not included in the pyramid but is on the side with salt. The idea is to restrict the amount consumed based on the volume already included in processed foods and drinks. • Include herbs and spices and discover different favours in cooking and reduce the reliance on sugar and salt. • Drink water. According to F Batmanghelidj, MD, Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, “Every single bodily function is linked, regulated and dependent on water.” “Move More” has been removed by Nutrition Australia to focus their core activity on food and nutrition. But their tagline is ‘Enjoy a variety of foods and be active every day’.
Keys to Healthy Living Enjoy a variety of foods Choose mostly plant-based foods Limit sugar and salt Choose water as your main drink Move more
“
What is your body telling you? While following these guidelines, the most important part of healthy eating is listening to your body. This can be your best tool to perfecting your individual diet, feeling energised and having amazing health. After eating certain foods do you experience tiredness, headaches, bloating, sickness, flatulence, diarrhoea, changes to stool frequency, irritability, interrupted sleep or mental fogginess? If so, you can reasonably assume the food you have eaten is not good for your body. This can be caused by food intolerance, food allergies or not eating the right fuel mix (protein to carb mix) for your body. Every individual has different nutritional requirements and therefore must modify their food accordingly. A one-size approach does not suit everyone, and we have found that over 60 per cent of our clients have had some adverse reaction to certain foods. Even Nutrition Australia understands that the food pyramid is conditional. “This advice is intended for the average healthy person. People who are pregnant or breastfeeding or who have a chronic health condition, intolerance or allergies should … seek specific dietary advice.” Wishing you the best fitness, health and happiness.

Great News for Older Australians Reduced regulation on home care funding means older Australians can choose to stay home for longer
Seasons CEO Nick Loudon
T
he CEO of Australia’s leading provider of innovative private aged care services, Nick Loudon, has welcomed the Commonwealth Government’s announcement this week to improve aged care by reducing regulation on home care funding. “We are living longer and healthier lives and we should all have a choice over staying at home or moving into a care facility without being financially disadvantaged. It is about time Australians were able to choose their own service provider and be in charge of their own care rather than options being limited by pre-prescribed funding directives,” Mr Loudon said. The Government is investing $7.5 billion over four years for home care packages to assist older Australians to pay for the services they need to remain in their own home for longer. This funding, combined with the February 2017 initiative to put the funds in the hands of the service recipient, will open up competition in the home care sector, leading to enhanced quality, innovation and service delivery.
Seasons Private Aged Care opens 7th community This is good news for Seasons Private Aged Care, which has six established communities across South East Queensland. Their seventh has just been announced with stage one of the new $115 million 283 unit community, Seasons Sinnamon Park, scheduled to be open to residents in 2017. Each Seasons community has its
own unique amenities, which are based on both the needs of the individual community and the location and design of the land upon which it has been built. Seasons CEO Nick Loudon said that his focus was on providing a private home environment for each resident. “Seasons Sinnamon Park has been designed to deliver the security, dignity, respect and choice … the older people in our communities have earned in building this great country of ours.” Each private residence will be subtly integrated with state-of-the-art clinical monitoring capability and emergency response systems. Couples can remain living together, even when one’s health needs might change, and family pets are welcome. For more information on Seasons Sinnamon Park please contact 1300 506 116 or visit www.seasonscare.com.au.

KNEE PAIN? Do you get sharp shooting knee pain when you move it the wrong way? Or does it feel like it can suddenly give way and collapse on you? Maybe it has collapsed on you already and the nasty fall adds insult to injury.
joints in your body would hurt, since your whole body is the same age.
Do you have difficulty going up and down stairs, doing up your shoes or getting down on the floor? Have you had to give up walking the dog because of your knee pain? Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your knee hurts and you just can’t trust that joint to work when it should!
Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you something is wrong. Finding the problem and fixing it has got to be a top priority! Why wait and let it get so bad surgery seems your only option? Please note that AustralianDoctor.com.au has reported that orthopaedic surgeons now claim, “The minimal benefits of arthroscopic knee surgery are outweighed by potential harms.”
My name is Dr. Andrew Gorman, owner of Andrew Gorman Chiropractic. Over the years, I’ve seen hundreds of people with the following problems leave the office feeling and moving better and often pain free: knee pain, arthritic knees and “no cartilage left” in the knees.

Creative Home Improvements Interior Decorators can inject the ‘wow factor’ and save you money
W
hy would you choose an interior decorator to help you with your new paint scheme, renovations, home improvements and office refurbishment, or to style your property before selling? Because decorators are specialists in interior improvements. Decorators are professionals who can give you the ‘wow factor’ and help you plan the redesign of your space. Many decorators have creative talent and usually a qualification to point you in the right direction before you spend your money.
Benefits of using an interior decorator Engage a decorator to: • learn techniques that decorators use • save you time in shopping for the right kinds of finishes • help you avoid making costly mistakes • advise what areas money should be spent on to increase property value • gain a functional, fresh and inviting environment • have access to exclusive products and resources not accessible to the general public.
The average cost of using a decorator is around $120 per hour. Much like a hairdresser, a good decorator will listen to what you want. They will ask questions regarding your needs and make suggestions on how to make areas in your home look the best they can possibly be within your budget. You can also put forth your own ideas and discuss them with the decorator to see if they can be incorporated into the overall design. Good design and the help of a decorator should be available and affordable to everyone; but do your homework before engaging a decorator. Make sure they are reputable and have some kind of qualification. There are quite a few who decorate on talent alone without understanding the compulsory building regulations under which a decorator must operate. However, word of mouth is still the best form of recommendation.
Interior decorator vs interior designer There is confusion for some people about what the difference is between an interior decorator and an interior designer? An interior designer can also be an interior decorator although a designer
will predominantly work with the manipulation of the space within a building, influencing the way a person functions within that space. They have the ability to move walls, doors and windows to accommodate the various activities and furnishings required in a certain area. They will work with architects and builders in conjunction with their own ideas to complete large-scale designs such as retirement homes, apartment and office buildings. On the other hand, an interior decorator’s work is primarily concerned with influencing the way in which a person interacts with the environment based on the aesthetics of the finished space. They will particularly focus on elements such as the lighting, soft furnishings, colour scheme, furniture and accessories. A decorator will also work with architects and builders and make suggestions regarding room sizes. However, a decorator will organise trades and specialists to ensure the area is completely finished and ready to live or work in.
20
$5000 kitchen makeover
If you are interested in using a decorator and are unsure how to choose the right one, call a few different companies and talk to the decorators themselves. Find one that you connect with over the phone. You need to feel comfortable and confident in the decorator before sharing your personal space. Number 5 & Chocolate Can the Number 5 person control indulging in the Food of the Gods?
C
hocolate – a gift from the God of Wisdom according to the Aztecs. It was thought to be an aphrodisiac and give the consumer power and strength. I don’t know about that, but it sure does make one feel marvellous. No wonder chocolate is the world’s most adored food. So cherished that the seeds were once used as currency. So, if chocolate is such a ‘magical’ food, why not have it morning, noon and night? I could easily eat chocolate endlessly, but too much of a ‘good thing’ is not always a ‘good thing’. This is a hard example for those with a numerology of five. The number five just can’t wait to experiment with life’s pleasures. Restraint, patience, tolerance, self-control and limitation are but a few virtues for the number five to acquire. Number five should look for quality over quantity.
Moderation Corresponding to all things in life, there has to be a balance. The first illustration is taken from a 16th century pictorial Aztec codex. An Aztec woman generates foam by pouring chocolate from
one pitcher to another. The froth was skimmed from the top and the remaining liquid was disbursed. This method must have been onerous, but it demonstrates the necessary patience and exemplifies numerous merits. It is not always what appears on the surface that is the sweetest tasting. How often do we jump in too quickly, only to wish we had stayed composed and not rushed in?
Combination of logic and emotion The Temperance tarot card gives dominance to the sun. The dirt path we all walk upon leads us to the illumination of the sun. We are all given the opportunity to explore new territory and investigate fresh subjects. This track is nourished by the water of emotions which the angel has one foot in. The other foot rests on the dry ground of logic. We need to feel all sensibilities but if we emerge both feet in, we may be overwhelmed. Often when we are searching, we allow our enthusiasm to turn to a superficial high only to experience an anti-climax. It is wonderful to be optimistic, but in taking control of our lives we
need to make conscious choices rather than following moods or whims. Making assertive well-adjusted decisions will bring a feeling of self-empowerment, enabling us to be comfortable with whom we are.
Harmonising our emotions The Temperance angel is pouring water unwearyingly from one chalice to another displaying the blending of polar opposites. To understand our sensations we need to weigh, measure and balance them. Poise brings about healing and harmony. The union of male and female energy is also displayed through the triangle and square on the angel’s tunic. The Sagittarius archer associated with Temperance has both an arrow that can be creative and destructive. The warning is to embrace moderation and patience through knowing when to shoot what arrow, and when. How do you blend all your qualities together for a balanced life?
