Audi Springwood Launches Prestige car dealership brings a touch of luxury to Springwood
T
he team at Audi Centre Springwood are busy preparing for the early November launch of their new, luxurious dealership in Springwood. The launch of the prestigious Audi specialist centre will include a Demonstrator Relocation Sale Event that will feature great deals on demonstrator stock, with a complimentary 3 year / 45 000 km service package on offer for limited time. General Manager Tania Meli and her principals, James, Brett and Rebecca Frizelle, share the excitement of opening their new state-of-the-art terminal facility, which offers luxury, practicality and convenience – with good old-fashioned customer service.
The dealership will boast an in-house café providing refreshments and snacks while customers relax in between inspecting a large range of new and pre-owned luxury vehicle, or while their precious Audi is undergoing a logbook service. The 20-bay, state-of-the-art workshop comes with direct reception and is staffed with globally accredited Audi technicians and service advisors. An adjacent parts and accessories store is stocked with genuine Audi parts for both trade and retail customers. The dealership is equipped with a “Private Customer Lounge” – one of few in Australia. Parking isn’t an issue with 30 external car park spaces and 67 at basement level.
The sales team are globally trained and accredited with two Audi Sport specialists. Trained specifically with sports car enthusiasts in mind, the Springwood dealership will display a line of high performance Audi Sport vehicles such as the all new RS models. And they are currently awaiting the imminent arrival of the all new R8! The wide range of elite services and facilities on offer are all part of Frizelle Automotive group’s plans for a “prestige vehicle one-stop shopping destination” in Springwood. They are also opening a new Jaguar landrover dealership beside Audi in late November which will only
enhance these plans. The philosophy reflects the old-fashioned, efficient and caring service that is the hallmark of a Frizelle dealership. Being aware of the cultural diversity on the Southside, Audi Centre Springwood has on board both Mandarin and Cantonese speaking staff to ensure consistent quality service. Keep an eye on the Audi Centre Springwood website for the official launch date and when the Demonstrator Relocation Sale is on! www.audicentrespringwood.com.au

Music! The universal language that engages, expresses and connects
M
ost of us have experienced first-hand that listening or moving to music we love is sometimes just the tonic we need. Whether we’re listening to our iPods and tapping along with our feet or strumming our ukulele, research confi rms a love of music makes people – from babies to the aged – healthier and happier. It is also historically a medium for individual and societal expression and connection.
Music good for young and old
Substantial research into the benefits of music on children’s development concludes that children learn through the use of vocabulary, rhyme and rhythm, and repetition – all of which are used in music. Classical music has also been found to be immensely beneficial to the growth and development of children’s brains, with those who are exposed to music and learn the concepts of rhythm and rhyme having a greater understanding of language. As for babies, it has long been suggested that playing calming classical music while pregnant will make for a calm-natured baby from the
familiar sounds. It’s no surprise that most cultures have their favourite nursery rhymes that they sing to babies to help them sleep. Children aren’t the only ones who benefit from the power of music. Studies have found that those who suffer from Dementia or Alzheimer’s respond well to music, with it impacting positively on the health of the brain and aiding memory recollection. In fact, the emotional connection with music can withstand the impact of our ageing brains and playing music is very effective for brain health. Music is a very powerful stimulus. Research has found substantial evidence that music can lower stress, aid in healing, improve development and improve the health of our brains. It can even evoke memories of times past. “Music is a powerful medium to use for healing, stress and anxiety release as well as having the ability to pump you up and get you motivated and

Folk Redlands
Folk Redlands Folk Redlands
Expression and communication through music
Throughout the ages music has touched every culture of our world and shaped the way we, our societies and cultures represent and express themselves. Folk music in particular is one way people have expressed their social comments, activism, creativity and emotions as individuals and a community. And Brisbane is no different. A growing number of people are taking up folk music – including jazz, ukulele playing, bluegrass and Celtic music – at a number of regular events around Brisbane. Many of these events provide not only opportunities for listening to music, but to have a go yourself in what’s called a ‘blackboard’ session. This is where musicians and singers can attend an event and write their name on a blackboard if they intend to perform. It’s usually on a firstcome, first-serve basis.
Folk Redlands provides a platform for local musicians, of any musical ability, to express themselves through music in front of a supportive, listening audience every third Saturday at the Indigiscapes Centre, in Capalaba. The event usually includes a feature act and a blackboard session. “We have 15–20 minute performance spots assigned on a first-in basis,” says organiser and singer–songwriter Ann Leung. Ann believes in harnessing the power of music in bringing people in the community together, young and old. “Folk music is a huge part of our society and Folk Redlands is all about bringing the community together and giving artists the platform to express themselves and their work,” says Ann.
Trevor Gollagher
Sunnybank Ukulele Players (SUP)
Five years ago Sunnybank resident, Trevor Gollagher, took up the ukulele, his first string instrument after having a background in drums and percussion and playing professionally for 35 years. He formed Sunnybank Ukulele Players to provide a friendly platform for ukulele players of any level to have fun and learn together. “I formed SUP to offer a place for ukulele players to meet and play music together and to build a sense of community through playing music. SUP is for everyone from professional ukulele players to someone that picked up the instrument yesterday,” says Trevor. There is one other reason that Trevor plays the ukulele and many others like him – the joy factor. “Joy, happiness and laughter is an essential ingredient for all ukulele players. You will never find an unhappy ukulele player at SUP. Playing and singing correctly is not essential – the most
important thing is enjoyment,” says Trevor. Bethany Best agrees that “music is the universal language that engages people.” It truly has the power to soothe, heal, motivate, excite and bring joy to both player and listener. No other medium has the intense power that music has to be a global form of art, communication and understanding all at once.

My son’s choices
Feeling lost
Q: Can you see when all the drama will be gone from my life? Thank you. – Donna
Q: Have I made the right choice about Jonah? – Jenny
Q: I’m feeling a little lost at the moment. I am struggling with my studies and focus, with so many other things happening in life. Do you have any direction for me? – Deanne
Thank you so much for asking. My guides are showing me that you need to resign from the idea that you have any control. However, by practising honesty you can change many things in your life, including stepping out of drama. Be clear on your limits and boundaries, and also with yourself. If you feel that a person is toxic, don’t allow them to take up a big chunk of your life. -Michelle
Your father is very persistent that I let you know that it is important to ‘make love’ not war with all that is going on. I feel that he has a lot that he is trying to cope with emotionally and sometimes needs space to understand and work out what that is. I am also being asked to remind you that he is your son and that he too can be stubborn and inflexible. Give things time and for him to understand how he works as he is very intuitive as well. Dad talks to him often and he misses him very much. So please send his love. – Leanne xxx

It’s important not to feel haste in making decisions too quickly. When the issue arises in your mind, what is the first thought and/ or feeling that overcomes you after you think of the issue? When it’s hard to get direction, it’s most often because there are too many ifs and buts. Get some alone time to do what nourishes your soul and get back to your core. Breathe deeply and ask your heart what it wants and needs – it will answer. Whether your mind likes hearing what your heart says is another story. Take time to get your bearings and be surrounded by what love is to you. – Antonella xx

Moore family fundraiser Your chance to give more help!
Logan MegaCentre co-ordinates donations for brave Moore family Many of us often wonder what we would do in the face of an emergency or attack. Would we experience fight, flight or freeze? Mother of five, Rachael Moore, knows what her children do – they come to the rescue!
Children save mother
Recent tragic events saw the children of Rachael Moore draw on their inner reserves to respond with a ‘fi ght back and rescue’ attitude when
seeing their mother being shot in the arm by an ex-partner. They saved their mother’s life and kept their family intact. Rachael’s two eldest boys, Jayden 14 and Cameron 10, fought the man down, grabbed the shotgun and hid it. When the man, fuelled by alcohol, jealousy and rage, continued to attack Rachael physically the boys fought him and restrained him, drawing on their experience of acting fi ght-scenes as actors. Kaylea 10 got her mother outside, carefully holding her shattered arm, bandaged it and called emergency services. Zane 4 took his two-year-old sister into another room for safety. All children stepped up courageously to protect their mother and family. The date of the attack was April 11 2014. Since then Rachael has undergone 18 operations and countless skin grafts on her arm. She is still in great pain and understandably the medical bills are mounting.
The Moore family
As if that wasn’t enough… While Rachael was in hospital the family home was broken into and everything was taken: the kids’ bikes, trophies, fish tank, linen … the lot!
Local business steps up
When Logan MegaCentre heard of the family’s plight, they jumped into fundraising action and are now calling on local families and businesses to provide anything to help this family’s critical needs and defray their living costs. All donations will be collected and kept at the MegaCentre and presented to Rachael and her family as an exclusive VIP event prior to Christmas.
Items suggested for donation range from new beds and linen to lounges, bicycles, television and unit, and kitchen and homewares plus gift vouchers from major chain stores. See the South City Bulletin website for a more detailed list of items: www.southcitybulletin.com.au/community/ MooreFamilyFundraiser.

Dress to Impress Choose the right look to ace that job interview
A
job interview is one of those occasions when you will want to put a lot of effort into how you present yourself. Dress appropriately for the position you are going for and this will give you a head start to create that all-important first impression. Here are a few tips as a guide to ensure you have thought of everything when it comes to presentation.
Dress up but conservatively
10
It’s best to dress up rather than down, and to dress conservatively. You can still show your personality by wearing colours that suit you. Concentrate on neutrals with splashes of your good colours in ties, shirts, shoes, belts and jewellery. Though do avoid loud colours and bright ties. And ladies, avoid anything sheer or showing too much flesh or cleavage. Keep skirts to a conservative length: long enough so that you can sit down comfortably. Another good rule of thumb is to dress as though you are your boss.
Shoes, jewellery, nails, make-up
Keep jewellery simple. Shoes should be polished and have medium heels. Court shoes or pumps for women are the best option. Avoid artistic manicures if you are going for a professional job. Neutral nails will always be the most suitable look. Finally, makeup should be understated, minimal and flattering, and suited to your colouring.
Just before you walk out that door
Just before you walk out that door, stand in front of a full length mirror, check yourself over and ask yourself, “Would I employ this person looking back at me? If you are clean, tidy, well-presented and dressed appropriately for the job, get your smile on, get your confidence on and walk out that door!
Well-fitted classic suits
Your suit or outfit should be comfortable and fit you well. Clothing should be neat, clean an and pressed. For the men, wearing a suit to an interview is a safe option. A dark coloured suit with a light coloured shirt is a good combination. on. Classic suit styles are best with co-ordinating socks and dress shoes.

SKIN HEALTH with Claire Mason
Stress: Why it’s bad for your body and skin health Our busy lives have brought too much stress in, and with it incredibly negative consequences. It can cause headaches, upset the stomach and even increase blood pressure. On top of that, stress can hurt your skin:
Have any questions for our experts? Drop us a line at AskExperts@southcitybulletin.com.au
How to reduce the effects of stress Your skin deserves to be taken care of. It is only trying to protect you from a wide variety of hazards. Exercise regularly, follow a proper diet and adopt some stress management techniques. For example, getting enough sleep every night, talking to friends and family about your problems, and meditating. Specific breathing exercises, yoga and visual imagery can also help. It might even be a good idea to seek professional help to properly cope with stress. There’s no shame in that as stress affects everyone, with varying degrees of influence. On a final note, you may need to set boundaries and limits. Saying no to some things can be the difference between a life filled with stress and a stress-free, happy life. READ MORE ONLINE
Weakens skin health: Stress wears your body out and stops your immune system from working well. This reduces the skin’s power to heal and protect itself against everyday hazards. Causes wrinkles: Stress hormones increase blood pressure and constrict blood vessels. This makes blood move away from the skin and your muscles tense. The result: wrinkles begin to form. Dries the skin: Stress can result in extreme dehydration, so the top layer of the skin becomes too thin and develops tiny perforations. This stops it from defending itself against UV rays, leading to aging skin, acne, inflammation and hyperpigmentation.

Tips to treat a heat migraine
Summer heat and migraines Do you often find the heat and glare from the sun triggers a migraine? If you do, you may find yourself constantly wearing sunglasses or holding an umbrella when you are out and about on a hot day. Some migraine sufferers dread the summer weather as they are unable to leave home due to the intense heat, humidity and strong glare from the sunlight, which they know may very well trigger a migraine. For those suffering from this, it can be a stressful time of the year as you may find it difficult to travel on holidays or even to the beach. This impacts the quality of life in the summer when most of us like to get outdoors for a swim or bbq. Some find they need to stay indoors with the air-conditioning on in order to stay cool to avoid the onset of a migraine. The old saying, ‘prevention is better than cure’, is very relevant when it comes to migraines. If you want to treat the cause of the problem so that you can enjoy spending time with family and friends in the summer sun
If you do find yourself experiencing a migraine from heat, here are some tips to help treat the symptoms. • Keep well hydrated • Wear sunglasses when out • Wear a wide brim hat • Hold an umbrella • Avoid driving towards the afternoon sun

Go to sleep! Top tips for quality sleep
S
leep is one of the most critical health factors that affects how we look, feel and function. We rarely hear about it from fitness and health experts, but good sleep is considered one of the fundamentals to improving and maintaining good health. Although most of us know that we need 8 hours of sleep per day, research says that more than 50% of us are regularly under-slept. Further to the lack of volume, our quality of sleep can be poor as we pay little attention to a plan, strategy or even our sleep habits. This is almost the complete opposite when we are raising kids as we feed, bath, settle and read to them so that they can get quality sleep to be healthy, happy and to grow.
Signs of a lack of good sleeping patterns
The most obvious sign that we are not getting the volume and quality of sleep is that we are tired
TOP 7 TIPS FOR A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP and stressed. It plays such an important part in our body that irregular sleep can be related to weight gain, diabetes, increased blood pressure, imbalance of hormones, reduced immune system, headaches, neck pain, irritability, reduced mental function like decision making, concentration, learning capacity and memory, and reduced physical function like balance, recovery, coordination and reaction time. What a list!! It seems so simple, but do not underestimate the impact of insufficient sleep as this is the very core of how our body works through the Automatic Nervous System. This system balances our body’s stress and repairs hormones.
1. Regular bed times including waking and sleeping (preferable before 10:30 pm) 2. Listen to your body – when you get those sleepy signals, listen and go to bed 3. Reduce stimulants 4 hours before bed – coffee, nicotine, sugar, soft drinks, TV, movies, computers and food 4. Reduce bright lights 2 hours before bed 5. Sleep in a completely dark room 6. Rest prior to sleep – warm bath, reading, warm milk 7. Reduce electrical devices in the bedroom

Tasmania Diary A day in the Apple Isle
A
chilly Tasmanian Sunday begins with the market at Penguin on the North West. We were greeted by the town’s mascot, met colourful characters, bought crafts and collectibles that are uniquely Tasmanian and were entertained by musicians. Bakery delights were enjoyed alongside the Big Penguin on the esplanade, one of Tasmania’s most photographed icons. There is no escaping
penguins in this town with penguin rubbish bins, penguin statues waving at you from roof tops and a penguin palyground. Fishing is too good to miss along this part of the coast. So while my husband wet a line, I treated myself to a facial at Avalon Body Boutique. Travelling south, we headed for Ulverstone along the Old Coast Road with breathtaking views and gardens. Discovering a Farmers Market on the wharf, we could not resist a gourmet lamb and rhubarb relish sandwich.
All aboard! A visit to the Devonport area is not complete without a ride on the steam ttrain at the Don River railway. As the sun begins to set we sstop at Lillico Beach, home to a colony of fairy penguins. You ccan watch these little birds ffrom a viewing platform as tthey return to their burrow eeach evening. A perfect end to a Sunday iin Tasmania. Until next time - Dawn Alice U

HOME with Jenelle Bartlett
Design and build your garage Increase your house value and protect your car with a well-designed garage
A
well-designed carport or garage can not only provide protection for some of our most valuable assets – our vehicles – it can also enhance the street appeal of our home and increase its value. “Garage and carports are a great and smart investment to add to your greatest asset, your home! They add a greater footprint to your home regarding square meters, while at the same time enhancing your home’s appearance, and on a more practical level protecting your vehicle,” says Robert Hannaford from Access Enterprise Solutions, a professional property building and maintenance service.
Seamless design
It is important that the carport or garage design complements your house design and doesn’t look
like an after-thought in order to ensure every cent you invent into your property can be recovered – and your extension is pleasing to the eye. Integration can be achieved through the use of similar materials, colours, roof form and clever landscaping. “Using similar colours and substrates helps the flow of eye and can make the extension look like it has always existed,” says Robert. “Your new extension needs to flow evenly and beautify your property without over capitalising.”
Getting the size and costing right
If you want to accommodate one average sized car, you will need a minimum area of 3 metres by 6 metres. For two cars, you will need 6 metres by 6 metres. If you need storage space, your carport or garage will need to be even bigger.
Complementary design with same colours and rendering - Keiron Kelly Builder
Lena Gatti of Gatti Design suggests that you get creative with how you utilise space within your carport or garage. “Incorporate storage within the roof space. Use an attic style ladder to access rarely used items such as boxes of paperwork or the Christmas tree and decorations.” It is important to consider the area where your house is located and its value. You need to spend more on your extension if your house is in a higher value area and less if it is in a lower value area. You wouldn’t spend $30 000 on a garage for a house that is worth $350 000.
What approvals are required?
You will need to apply for Building Approval, and depending on your property’s zoning, constraints and lot size, you may also need to apply for Planning Approval.
Matching roof line/gables, weatherboard and colours - Additions Renovations
“You can normally fi nd planning information on your local council website, as well as the name and number of those you need to speak to,” says Robert. Your architect or building designer can also guide you through this process. Remember, if you are going to build or modify your driveway, you will also need to apply for a driveway permit to cross the footpath. This makes for effective teaching and learning,â€? says Principal Miles. A new intake of students begins every term and students can start from where they left off at previous schools. New enrolments are capped at 250 per term. Mature-aged students sometimes return to catch up, for example, on Grade 10 Maths and English to get into the defense forces.

Flexible, adaptable learning programs
ELC follows a rolling curriculum that caters to individual needs. All students and staff undergo personality testing to discover their learning style. Then students can choose to work in a particular group or individually, according to their personality type. This, together with three-hour long classes and working on only one subject a day, maximises and fast-tracks learning by keeping students on task and saving time. “The kids love it! The Bonsai Child Is your parenting style raising confident children?
P
arents doing too much for their children and giving them a ‘perfect’ childhood could be raising children who are not ready for the world outside their home. A new book on parenting, The Bonsai Child, discusses why these well-intentioned parenting practices may have a negative impact on children’s resilience, self-esteem and wellbeing.
Dr Locke says that when parents fix everything the child loses the opportunity to learn how to overcome the situation, face things not always going their way and understanding they have to face consequences when they make poor choices. “We forget that trees need wind to help them grow stronger; likewise children need challenges to become more capable.”
Children need challenges to become more capable
Over-parenting has poor outcomes
The book’s author, Dr Judith Locke, a clinical psychologist, researcher and former teacher, says the current generation of parents are encouraged to make their child always happy and do everything for them. “This makes their children like bonsai trees, looking flawless but very dependent on their parents and very reliant on perfect conditions all of the time,” says Dr Locke. “Like bonsai, these children can only cope in these ideal conditions; they may falter when they are outside their parents’ care and not similarly catered to.”
20
Dr Locke research has shown that overdoing good parenting actions has resulted in the current situation. “These parents are undertaking helpful strategies, such as protection, affection and assistance, but overdoing them or continuing to do them at an age where their child should be stepping up a little more. It is over-parenting because it is too much of a good thing with poor outcomes for children and families.” Dr Locke believes we should be understanding of parents who are bringing their children up this way.
“I think there is a lot of criticism of overparenting but I don’t think people understand parents are increasingly being encouraged to parent this way. They are doing everything for their child because they think that it’s the best way to raise their children – smoothing out all of their child’s problems because they think there will be terrible consequences for their child if they don’t.”
Helping children become resilient and confident
To improve the situation, Dr Locke says it is too simplistic to just tell parents to step back a little. “In my clinical experience I find I have to be very explicit with parents on the sorts of things they need to do in the various situations their child faces or with certain child behaviours. So, while my book details what overparenting is, why
Dr Judith Locke
this situation is occurring and what the impacts are, I also give very specific strategies parents should use to help their children to achieve their potential and become more resilient and genuinely confident.” Dr Locke says her book takes the same approach as she takes in the parenting sessions she delivers to schools around Australia. “I find parents respond best to practical, evidence-based strategies delivered in an occasionally entertaining or light-hearted manner. Parenting is a serious business but it also should be a little enjoyable for everyone or a challenging job becomes even more challenging.”

Tutoring The growing industry aimed at helping our children succeed
T
he tutoring industry has experienced rapid growth throughout Australia in recent times, increasing by 40% and contributing $6 billion to the economy. Mohan Dhall, Chief Executive of the Australian Tutoring Association (ATA), says that growth in the tutoring industry has occurred across the board in Catholic, public and independent sectors, with many parents paying around $70 an hour for coaching and up to $10 000 annually.
lifelong benefits of children receiving the best education possible. The ATA reports that in 2013 one third of students in year 12 underwent tutoring prior to their final exams. Popular HSC English Tutor Anthea Daley explains, “Tutoring can empower students by providing the opportunity to build skills and increase confidence. Simply feeling positive and proactive is an important but often neglected consideration in exam preparation”.
Giving children an educational edge
The main reasons for the rapid growth of this industry lie in the eagerness of parents to give their children an educational edge and improve their chances of entry into preferred high schools and universities. According to the ATA, the advent of NAPLAN has also sparked an increase in tutoring services both before and after testing occurs. Louise Watson, professor of Educational policy at the University of Canberra believes that tutoring is now a “worldwide phenomenon” that is fuelled by society’s increasing awareness of the
Tutoring options
Louise Watson, Professor of Educational policy at the University of Canberra
The most popular tutoring option Australia-wide – around 42.5% – is oneon-one tutoring. Lynette McLenaghan was a private tutor for eleven years and confirms that students respond well to this level of assistance. “One of the huge advantages of tutoring
students is that the quality of the lesson isn’t hindered by classroom distractions. As a teacher my strengths and skills are better utilised teaching one-on-one than in a classroom.” Many high schools employ senior or past school students to tutor current students at reasonable rates. Coaching schools such as Kip McGrath have grown rapidly throughout Australia, providing tutoring in reading, spelling, comprehension, English and maths. Many students find the group sessions offered by Kip beneficial as they can bounce ideas off other students, have a laugh and realise they are not alone in their need for assistance. The social interaction can also reduce stress encountered throughout the tutoring experience. The obvious advantage for online tutoring is that it is available for students 24/7. It appeals to those who live in remote areas, are unwell or
physically challenged. Online tutoring is currently the least popular option and is utilised by less than 2% of parents.
Finding the right tutor Mohan Dhall believes that the right tutor can complement school education when “they instill confidence in the student and work in partnership with schools”. Mohan insists that the personal characteristics of an effective tutor should include good communication skills, warmth, empathy, honesty and accountability. “They should be subject matter experts who can break down complex concepts and build understanding through standard teaching processes. A tutor’s aim is to help kids build confidence in their skills so they can help themselves”.

Aidan crosses finish line! The Scarlett May Foundation launches and raises $14 000
The very first event of the Scarlett May Foundation was kick-started on 10 October by foundation founder Aiden Lamberth completing a mammoth 55.46 kilometre marathon from the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital to the Gateway Baptist Church, Mackenzie. There he was greeted by supporters including his wife and co-founder Renee and their two children. The family then hosted a successful fundraising Launch Luncheon. The Scarlett May Foundation provides support for families with critically ill children in hospital or those whose children have passed. They provide meals, accommodation, bereavement counselling and keepsakes. Aidan and Renee established this great cause after the loss of their beautiful 11-monthold daughter, Scarlett May. Aidan says they were immensely proud of how the event went. “We both thought the launch was a great success. For our first event, it was a great learning experience. We can’t wait to get started on our next big event,” he says. www.southcitybulletin.com.au | November 2015

“By the end of the launch, including all donations, sponsorships and silent auction item sales, we raised just over $14,000 which will go directly to help support families in need. Given our target was $10,000 we are really excited about the result!” The Scarlett Foundation is now gearing up for their boot camp, Squat for Scarlett, in November at Kangaroo Point Cliffs. Squat for Scarlett When: Saturday 28th November 2015 Time: 8 am for 8.30 am start Where: Kangaroo Point cliffs - grass area above cafe $20 per entrant. www.scarlettmayfoundation.org.au/squat-for-scarlett-2015
Flying high for a cause
Up Up and Upper Paper Plane Championships a success! The inaugural Up Up and Upper Paper Plane Championships have recently taken place, with much success, raising money for charity. On 17 October, Brisbane kids ditched their iPad for a more traditional outdoor, fun-filled afternoon of gliding their hand-made planes through the AFL fields in Upper Mount Gravatt. Over 300 people attended the event with $607 going to the RSPCA, $540 for AEIOU and $210 for the Special Olympics. While the money they raised was a mammoth effort by everyone, the main aim of the event was to get kids away from their technology and back doing the things kids should be doing outside. Nate and Gabe Adler, and their dad Dan, were
initially inspired by the movie Paper Planes and worked to develop this amazing event from scratch. “The event far exceeded our expectations. The weather was perfect with just the right wind conditions. Everyone said great things about the idea and wants us to run the event again next year,” says Dan. “It was a stunning spectacle seeing all the kids throwing their coloured paper planes.” With the amazing turnout from this year we are hoping that the Up Up and Upper event will be back again next year to fly high for a cause.

f the idea of Small Farming and Country Living appeals to you, come to the Small Farming Expo. In its tenth year, the expo’s emphasis this year is on what you can grow on your smaller acreage, how to grow it, and how to care for your land and livestock. Get acquainted with a whole range of small breeds of cattle, horses, chickens, alpacas, llamas, donkeys and maremma dogs and more. The aim of the day is to give people a chance to view and compare these breeds, wander freely amongst the animals and pat them, talk to the breeders, and learn from the demonstrations, displays and information on offer. Lecture topics include Care and management of your livestock and land and Guardian animals and their role in smaller acreage. A range of agricultural equipment will be displayed relevant to small breeds and smaller acreage. You can even purchase livestock from a number of exhibitors. Expo organiser Margo Hayes is keen to spread the word about the ease of smaller
breeds and the meat qualities of smaller cattle breeds. “They are designed for producers who want grass-fed, feed-efficient animals that are environmentally sustainable. We have producers who have been finalists in the Delicious Produce Awards and other national competitions,” says Margo.
