Rip currents are the number 1 hazard on Australian beaches being responsible for at least 21 drownings on average per year, as well as being the cause of many rescues. Rip Current Survival If you get caught in a rip current, you need to know your options: 1. For assistance, stay calm, float and raise an arm to attract attention. 2. While floating, rip currents may flow in a circular pattern and return you to an adjacent sandbar. 3. You may escape the rip current by swimming parallel to the beach, towards the breaking waves.

4. You should regularly assess your situation. If your response is ineffective, you may need to adopt an alternative such as staying calm, floating and raising an arm to attract attention. These may sound like simple options, but rip currents are complex, dynamic processes and all responses also have their pitfalls. You could float on an unpatrolled beach and not be returned to a sandbank with no-one there to help. You can also swim parallel and end up swimming against a longshore current which can flow along a beach; this will see you get tired quickly. Therefore, the best thing you can do is avoid them! The best thing you can do is stay out of rip current in the first place! The best ways to do this are: • Always swim between the red and yellow flags • Learn how to spot rip currents and avoid them Source: beachsafe.org.au/surf-ed/ ripcurrents

Of the 206 shows held annually in NSW, Berry's is among the most traditional and "one of the best on the coast". It's typical of the annual shows that many rural Australians have grown up with, providing a mixture of agricultural exhibits and events, and a wonderful meeting place bustling with characters. With the exception of four war years Berry Show has been running since 1887. This year will be Berry’s 126th Show and as always has an exciting

St Georges Basin - Sanctuary Point - Callala Bay - Callala Beach - Myola - Huskisson - Vincentia - Hyams Beach Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson, where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Other towns in this area include St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point, Callala Bay and Beach, Myola, Vincentia and Hyams Beach. The bay’s beaches are impressive -a series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state. At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a
pristine coastal wilderness. From Wreck Bay village on Summercloud Bay in the park’s south, a walking trail circles the peninsula to St Georges Head, passing quiet beaches, cliffs and forests Huskisson is the location of many facililties including the Lady Denman Maritime and Heritage Complex, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops to explore. Hyams Beach is surrounded by natural bush and is far enough removed from the ‘rat-race’ to be as peaceful a retreat as one can imagine with the added attractions of pure white sand and crystal clear water. Hobie 16® World Championships in Jervis Bay Huskisson will welcome a record number of entrants for the world’s largest Hobie 16 World Championships, held from Friday 31 January to Saturday 15 February 2014. The Hobie 16 World Championships is the pinnacle competition for the largest and most popular catamaran class in the world. More than 365 teams, comprising almost 500 competitors from 27 countries will battle it out during the 16-day sailing regatta on the idyllic waters of Jervis Bay. A single class, multi-hull event, the regatta ensures a level playing field for competitors, where all will be sailing in identical Hobie catamarans. With previous World Championships hosted in Canada, Mexico, New Caledonia, South Africa, Spain, United Arab Emirates and The Virgin Islands, Jervis Bay is in good company hosting this truly global event. Steve Fields Managing Director of Hobie Cat Australasia said: "These are fantastic numbers. With the consistent winds making Jervis Bay one of the world’s top 5 sailing locations, add to that kangaroos and the natural beauty of the Shoalhaven region as well as the whole Aussie small town experience, it's no wonder we're looking at being the Worlds largest Hobie 16® World Championships!”
Destination NSW estimates the event will deliver an economic impact of close to $3.4 million. In addition, around 60 of the Hobie 16 Catamarans have been built locally in Jervis Bay, injecting in excess of $750,000 into the local economy before the event even begins. For even more adrenaline-pumping action, take on Australia’s fastest water ride - the Boogie Slide! Reaching more than 100 km/h, the Boogie Slide goes from mellow to extreme in seconds and includes surfing the wake, 360º spins or even overtaking the boat! If you want to get behind the wheel,
there are speed boat handling courses available while those seeking more leisurely pursuits can enjoy stand up paddle boarding, kayak tours, or even hire a kayak for some independent fun. If you’re looking for a fun day out for the whole family, a Christmas party, bucks or hens parties or any other group, WOW Water sports will tailor activities to suit your needs. This fully accredited surf and ski school most often operates around Ulladulla, Mollymook, Narrawalle, Lake Conjola, Bendalong, Sussex Inlet and on the Shoalhaven River at Nowra, but is completely mobile and can operate at any suitable location in the Shoalhaven. Walking on Water Owner and Head Coach Simon Twitchen recently received first place in the tourism and hospitality division of Shoalhaven’s Excellence in Business Awards. He believes WOW Water sports offers something unique. “We don’t just offer a range of exciting activities that are fantastic fun for most ages. “Where else can do all of the activities we offer in such a stunning location, with first rate equipment and coaching?
“With Walking on Water and Ulladulla Surf Schools you get more than just great value – you get experiences you will never forget,” Simon says. Hang on for the ride of your life and start your South Coast waterborne adventure today by contacting Simon and his team at WOW Water sports on 0417 360 791 or visiting www.wow-watersports.com.au

Summerside Festival - celebrating everything good about summer The annual Summerside Festival is shaping up to be the biggest yet – with the calendar packed to the brim with summer-themed events. Being held from 1 February to 2 March 2014 in more than 20 venues throughout the Canberra region, the Summerside Festival celebrates everything good about summer in the Canberra region. The month-long festival is full of dining events celebrating local and seasonal produce, opportunities to taste the best of the region’s wines as well as innovative and exciting performances, events and exhibitions. So, as well as enjoying the South Coast this summer, embrace the warmer weather and head inland to the Canberra region this February for a lazy long lunch, chocolate or wine tasting, film under the stars, opera at a vineyard or an afternoon of live music. Why not make a weekend of it at one of the participating accommodation providers before finishing it off with evening tapas, a degustation dining experience or twilight horse ride? The Summerside Festival is presented by the members of The Poacher’s Way – a collective inspired by land and life located in the Canberra and surrounding region.
Make your summer a summer to remember and visit www. thepoachersway.com.au for event details and register online to receive regular event updates.

What better way to capture the taste of summer than in a sauce which freezes well and goes with anything BBQ'd, pasta, breakfast eggs and seafood. 2kg ripe tomatoes 6 spring onions 3 sprigs basil leaves 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons sugar Salt and pepper to taste Wash and roughly chop the tomatoes. Clean and chop spring onions. Remove leaves from basil sprigs and tear roughly. Heat olive oil in a large nonstick frypan, add tomatoes and cook on high for 5 mins, add spring onions and sugar, cook for a further 3 mins until a sauce consistency. Season to taste.
