THE NATIONAL FOREST is one of Britain’s boldest environmental projects, creating a Forest for the nation across 200 square miles of Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire.

Smaller pictures L-R: Fun at CONKERS, bee and Fritalary near Ashby. Main picture: Beacon Hill (2020Vision).

In less than twenty years, one of the least wooded parts of the country has been transformed. A massive 8 MILLION trees have been planted, trebling the woodland cover, creating habitats for wildlife and a beautiful landscape for people to enjoy. The ultimate goal is for woodland to cover around a third of the Forest area and to link the ancient forests of Charnwood and Needwood. Help to create this ‘forest in the making’ through our plantatree scheme. You will be invited to a

Treasures of the past MEET THE CHARACTERS WHO ONCE LIVED IN THE NATIONAL TRUST’S CALKE ABBEY ON ONE OF ITS REGULAR ‘CALKE ALIVE’ DAYS. THE HOUSE IS FROZEN IN TIME FROM WHEN THE FORMER ECCENTRIC AND RECLUSIVE OWNERS ALLOWED IT TO SLOWLY FALL INTO DISREPAIR. Discover the inspiration for the fictional grand battle in Sir Walter Scott’s novel, Ivanhoe, as you watch the ‘Clash of the Knights’ re-enactment at ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH CASTLE. Learn more about the castle’s incredible history in ASHBY MUSEUM. Formerly the Bass Museum, the NATIONAL BREWERY CENTRE is a world-class visitor centre that brings Burton upon Trent’s proud brewing heritage to life and hosts regular beer festivals and comedy nights. You can also see time honoured brewing methods in action within a traditional Victorian Brewhouse at MARSTON’S BREWERY VISITOR CENTRE. Step into the world of Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ on a Murder Mystery evening on an old steam train at GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY. Or have a go at actually driving a steam train with BATTLEFIELD LINE RAILWAY, which whistles its way from Shackerstone to BOSWORTH BATTLEFIELD. The Battlefield’s award-winning interactive visitor centre shows the drama and treachery in this final battle of the War of the Roses where King Richard III lost his crown to Henry Tudor. At DONINGTON LE HEATH MANOR HOUSE you can see the bed where Richard III allegedly slept before setting off to the battle. Built in the 13th Century, this beautifully restored house has exhibitions and re-enactments throughout the year. Have you ever wondered about seeing a ghost? Take part in a ghost hunt at TUTBURY CASTLE, a ghost walk at GRACE DIEU PRIORY or a paranormal evening at SNIBSTON.

QUICK REFERENCE Like mining, pottery was a major industry for this area. SHARPE’S POTTERY MUSEUM traces the history of this industry and hosts regular events and talks. Discover how gritty life would have been working in a 19th Century blast furnace on one of MOIRA FURNACE MUSEUM’S guided tours. Stroll through the formal gardens of MELBOURNE HALL or among the rare tree species in ELVASTON CASTLE COUNTRY PARK. Take afternoon tea at CATTON HALL or explore the National Trust gems SUDBURY HALL and KEDLESTON HALL – an 18th Century classical hall within a beautiful landscaped park. But the most poignant link to our past is the NATIONAL MEMORIAL ARBORETUM. Over 100 woodland gardens and sculptures are dedicated to military or civilian organisations, events or conflicts to create a living tribute to those who lost their lives in the 20th Century. A silence is observed daily at 11am and remembrance services are held regularly in the chapel.

From here you can stroll through woodland to pretty Barton under Needwood, browse around lovely shops or enjoy live music at the Waterfront pub and restaurant. Heading north, you can visit SHARDLOW, one of only two surviving inland canal ports in the country. For shorter canal boat cruises hop on at MOIRA FURNACE on the Ashby Canal, or watch the

scenery gently roll past for an hour’s cruise to Stenson or Willington with MERCIA LEISURE TRIPS, based at Mercia Marina. On your return you can enjoy a coffee in the café, browse its shops and set off on a canalside walk. You can now also stay in the Mercia Marina’s WATERSIDE LODGES. You may spot the shy bird as you walk the Kingfisher Trail alongside the Trent & Mersey Canal, through the outskirts of Burton upon Trent. CROXALL LAKES NATURE RESERVE, BRANSTON WATER PARK and the TRENT WASHLANDS in Burton upon Trent are also ideal locations for spotting wildlife especially herons and damselflies.

it’s all happening... Don’t miss it!

Arts, crafts, gifts and spas TAKE TIME FROM THE DAILY RUSH TO SLOW DOWN AND TREAT YOURSELF.

Smaller pictures L-R: Ferrers Gallery, stunning pictures in Barton Marina Gallery, Crackpotz, browsing for gifts at Barton Marina. Main picture: 2020Vision exhibition coming to Swadlincote and Calke Abbey.

2020VISION, a nationwide touring exhibition featuring 100 outstanding pictures taken across the UK, will be in Swadlincote from 18 March – 7 April and Calke Abbey 10-29 April. With a daily market and quaint courtyards, ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH is a lovely stop-off to pick up a gift or a souvenir from your visit. The castle is near the town centre, so you can combine a visit here with a lovely leisurely lunch and a touch of shopping. Don’t miss the Statutes Fair and Arts Festival. MELBOURNE and TUTBURY are definitely worth visiting for their galleries, antique shops and eateries. Stunning Melbourne Church, in its ‘olde worlde’ setting opposite the historic hall, is described as a cathedral in miniature. You can see fantastic re-enactments or watch the annual display of fireworks in November at TUTBURY CASTLE. The FERRERS CENTRE FOR ARTS & CRAFTS is

home to 18 craft workshops and the FERRERS GALLERY. This has three floors, two of which are dedicated to a year round exhibition programme. There is something incredibly therapeutic about hand-painting pottery – and you can try it both here and CRACKPOTZ CERAMIC CAFÉ. Pottery was once a major industry in this area. You can pick up pottery and crafts at SHARPE’S POTTERY MUSEUM and learn about its history on one the fascinating talks in the restored Kiln. MOUNT ST BERNARD ABBEY also has wonderful pottery on sale that has been lovingly handmade by its resident monks. Promenade along the waterfront at BARTON MARINA and you will be lured into temptation with the array of beautiful shops, gallery and restaurants. The Waterfront pub hosts live music every Friday and Saturday night.

As you might expect, there are many excellent garden centres to visit in the area such as BYRKLEY GARDEN CENTRE, SWARKESTONE NURSERY and PLANTERS AT BRETBY. BURTON UPON TRENT has everything you could want - all the top high street names, lovely eateries and excellent events including its Statutes Fair and PINT Arts Festival. OCTAGON SHOPPING CENTRE offers department stores together with specialist shops. You can take in a flick at the CINEMA in Burton upon Trent, Uttoxeter or Swadlincote and there are THEATRES in Ashby de la Zouch, Coalville, Ibstock and Burton upon Trent. The Tourist Information Centres have details of what is on. Or avoid the shops completely and just let yourself be pampered at CHAMPNEYS SPRINGS, EDEN DAY SPA or REEDS HEALTH CLUB AND SPA within Best Western Premier Yew Lodge Hotel. The new Health Club & Spa at ST GEORGE’S PARK offers great spa packages – and you might even catch a glimpse of a famous footballer!

You can make delicious gifts for friends (if they last that long!) or simply buy them from The Three Horseshoes pub in Breedon on the Hill. SEASONED COURSES runs cookery sessions that will teach and enthuse you about food, such as Cupcake Heaven, Essential Italian and Entertaining with Ease. While here treat yourself to home-baked cakes at HICKS LODGE: NATIONAL FOREST CYCLE CENTRE, LANGAN’S TEA ROOM and HELEN’S BAKEHOUSE & TEAROOM in Burton upon Trent. Take lunch at LAKESIDE BISTRO, which overlooks a pretty fishing lake or for a quirky dining experience visit our genuine 50s AMERICAN

DINER, in Albert Village just outside Swadlincote. If you fancy good old-fashioned fish n chips go to ANDY’S FISH BAR in Church Gresley near Swadlincote – it has won dozens of awards. Looking for somewhere nice for the evening? THE BULL’S HEAD in Repton has won awards for its restaurant and wood-fired pizzas or for a traditional village pub atmosphere and excellent food, visit the SHOULDER OF MUTTON in Oakthorpe. The NATIONAL FOREST FOOD GUIDE lists local producers and suppliers in and around The National Forest along with cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops that stock local produce. Download this from www.visitnationalforest.co.uk/food or contact our friendly Tourist Information Centres (see page 3).
