Trails Explore the regions scenic parks and preserves

There are many ways to explore the extensive trail systems throughout the region. Choose from bicycle, horseback, cross-country skis, snowshoes, snowmobile or your own two feet. Trails range from meticulously groomed, paved and level surfaces, to terrain suitable for the extreme mountain biker or hiker.

Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve

Falls Park, Sioux Falls

11

Fifteen hundred acres established so visitors could enjoy the landscapes and learn about nature, the Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve near North Sioux City offers over 10 miles of trails along the Missouri River with Wildlife viewing blinds along the way. Visitors can explore the home, barns, church and school house. Guided golf cart tours are available for those with physical disabilities. www.southeastsouthdakota.com

Big Sioux Recreation Area & Beaver Creek Nature Area

Big Sioux Recreation Area lies on the banks of the Big Sioux River. Five miles of trails ramble through woodland and prairie. A bicycle trail connects with the nearby town of Brandon. In winter, snowshoers and snowmobilers can hit the trails and relax afterwards at the warming house. Nearby Beaver Creek Nature Area is a good place to observe wildlife. Both parks feature historic 1800’s log cabins.

Falls Park & Big Sioux River Recreational Trail

Sioux Falls is home to over 80 public parks. The centrally located Falls Park is the hub of the park system and connected to many of the city’s other parks via the bike trail corridor which encircles the city. Walk, jog or bike your way along the 29-mile paved trail that wraps itself around the city along the Big Sioux River greenway, through scenic urban and wildlife areas, beginning at Falls Park and continuing around the city to the Outdoor Campus. The trails are maintained for year-round outdoor enjoyment. A five-story enclosed viewing tower at Falls Park provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the Falls and city skyline.

Good Earth State Park

Big Sioux Recreational Trail

South Dakota’s newest state park, Good Earth State Park at Blood Run, is located just east of Sioux Falls. This National Historic Landmark is the location of a large Native American sacred site. It features six miles of hiking trails through shaded Bur Oak Forest, ravines, native tall grass prairie and winds along the banks of the Big Sioux River with three scenic decks along the trails and a Visitor Center.

Lewis & Clark Recreation Area & Meridian Trails

Lewis and Clark Recreation Area, Yankton, has miles of trails including paved lakeside trails and rugged mountain bike trails. The system of trails also connects with Meridian Trails in nearby Yankton. An historical double decker Meridian Bridge Trail in Yankton offers great views of the Missouri River.

Mitchell Trails & Lake Mitchell

The City of Mitchell has 8.5 miles of paved bike trails and 8.2 miles of unpaved bike trails within the city. In addition, the city has 13 miles of hiking and biking trails around Lake Mitchell. Bike rentals are available to the public.

Newton Hills State Park

Newton Hills Woodland Trail, near Canton, is on the National Recreational Trails registry. Crossing dense forests and open grasslands, it is an exceptional trail for birdwatchers. An observation tower provides a bird’s eye view of a wooded valley.

Palisades State Park & Devil’s Gulch

Four trails twist and turn through quartzite formations along Split Rock Creek at Palisades State Park, near Garretson. A challenging climb on towering Sioux quartzite spires and sheer cliff walls await the more adventurous outdoorsman. Devil’s Gulch also has scenic trails to Devil’s Falls and Devil’s Stairway amidst legends of outlaw Jesse James.

Sioux River Red Rock Trail to The Dells

This outdoor recreational trail at Dell Rapids circles City Park and runs along the Big Sioux River to a scenic overlook of The Dells. The latest extension, begun in 2019, includes a pedestrian bridge and half mile of trail to the dam in the southwest corner of The Dells. It travels through an area of woods and natural prairie that is popular with local fisherman and hikers.

Spirit Mound Historic Prairie

Stand where Lewis and Clark stood 200 years ago. Take the threequarter mile trail to the summit of Spirit Mound, near Vermillion, where over 300 acres of prairie has been restored. Interpretive signage makes this hike a learning experience.

Union Grove State Park

Union Grove State Park, near Beresford, features a four mile multi-use trail and a large variety of trees which provide fall color and habitat for birds and wildlife.

ATV Trails

Bring your ATV and kick up some dust and mud at Talsma’s Trail Park along the bluffs and ravines of the Missouri River in rural Avon.

Snowmobile Trails

Hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails make up the East River Trails System. For maps visit gfp.sd.gov/snowmobiling/.

Rock Climbing

A small, but scenic geologic wonder, Palisades State Park is nestled among the sheer cliffs overlooking the Split Rock Creek just a short halfhour’s drive from Sioux Falls, at Garretson. The park offers the regular menu of outdoor recreation opportunities, including camping, hiking and picnicking. But it also offers a unique form of outdoor excitement for the more adventuresome at heart. Palisades is one of just a few premier rock climbing sites in the Midwest. Numerous climbing routes are easily accessed and provide a wide assortment of climbing experiences. Sioux quartzite formations play host to a variety of face and crack climbs, with even a few hidden bouldering sites thrown in for good measure. Whether top-roping a novice route on South Wall or Rattlesnake Rock, or a more ambitious route at Swing Set Cove or on Positron, climbers from all over the Midwest make the trek to Palisades to take on the forces of gravity. Rock climbing enthusiasts have no need to venture to the mountains. Sometimes a prairie oasis like Palisades State Park may offer more than meets the eye. And the views experienced while hanging from a rope fifty feet above the waters of Split Rock Creek are quite different than those experienced by other park visitors. It’s all a matter of perspective! The nearby city of Garretson, just two miles north of the park, provides all the services necessary for an extended visit. Palisades State Park is just 10 miles north of I-90 off Exit 406 near Brandon. Stay tuned for news about their major expansion of the park by “Liking” and “Following” our page www.facebook.com/SoutheastSouthDakota. For more information about rock climbing at the park, contact Palisades State Park at 605-594-3824.

Winter Fun

Cross-country ski trails are available in many state parks during winter months. Trails lead visitors off the beaten track and allow them to discover the beauty and wonderment of a South Dakota winter. Many of the trails 13

begin and end near heated warming shelters. Snowshoeing is an easy and enjoyable way to get outside during the snowy winter days. All you need is a sense of adventure and good boots. If you can walk you can snowshoe. A number of state parks offers free snowshoe checkout. Check out the Trails Chart on page 15 to see state parks offering these winter activities. Great Bear Ski Valley & Recreation Park at Sioux Falls is home to 14 downhill trails, a terrain park, Kirby Family Tubing Park, and cross country and snow shoeing trails that provide fun and excitement for all skill levels. A conveyor surface lift gets you to the top fast for more time on the slopes. They also offer lessons and an inviting lodge to warm up in. Hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails connecting Garretson, Dell Rapids, Brookings, Madison, Mitchell, DeSmet, Huron, Lennox and Parker offer winter fun. Some state parks also maintain snowmobile trails when the weather cooperates. Ice fishing is a popular winter activity and anglers have access to popular ice fishing waters across the state. Many lakes are cleared of snow weekly when ice thickness permits.

Waterways A paddling paradise

Downtown Riverfest, Sioux Falls

15

Our lakes and rivers offer pristine waters, picturesque scenery, historical sites and abundant wildlife. With more than 175 natural and man-made lakes and three major rivers, Southeast South Dakota is perfect for canoeing and kayaking. Paddlers can immerse themselves in the region’s natural beauty. Canoe and kayak outings can be combined with fishing, swimming, camping or hiking along the shoreline and can last for a couple of hours or be a week-long adventure. Identify all access areas and hazards before beginning. Sometimes portages are needed to get around dams, fences and sandbars. Always have a contingency plan to get off the river if weather or river/lake conditions change or a paddler becomes sick or tired. Most shorelines in South Dakota are privately owned. Permission must be secured before going on land. River sandbars may appear to be excellent camping sites, but water levels can rise quickly. South Dakota law requires that non-motorized boats over 12 feet long, including canoes and kayaks, be licensed in South Dakota or another state. The registration www.southeastsouthdakota.com

Meridian Bridge, Yankton

decal must be shown on each side of the bow. Every person in the watercraft must have an approved personal flotation device that fits properly, is readily available and in serviceable condition.

Big Sioux River

Originating in northeastern South Dakota, the Big Sioux River winds southward to Sioux Falls, where it forms the boundary between South Dakota and Iowa until it meets the Missouri River. With good water levels in the spring and early summer, it is possible to paddle from US Hwy 14 near Brookings to the river’s confluence with the Missouri River. Paddlers favor the segment from Lien Park in Sioux Falls to Newton Hills State Park. Points of interest include Big Sioux Recreation Area, Gitchie Manitou Park, the old Klondike Mills site and Newton Hills State Park. Big Sioux Recreation Area and Newton Hills State Park have canoe launch sites and camping facilities. Park entrance license is required. There are several low head dams where your watercraft must be portaged to the other side. The Jay Heath Canoe and Kayak Trail is designed for paddlers to navigate water trails along the Big Sioux River. A map indicating launch sites and campgrounds as well as general information about each site can be found at gfp.sd.gov/canoe/.

James River

The James River is a prairie stream that meanders and curves, revealing new pastoral scenes around each bend. It has been noted as one of the longest unnavigable river in the world. Fortunately, this distinction doesn’t apply to paddlers who travel the river in spring and early summer. There are a number of access points near US and SD Highways.

Split Rock Creek

Split Rock Creek winds a scenic route through northeastern Minnehaha County before meeting the Big Sioux River east of Sioux Falls. During high water flow in spring and after heavy summer rain, it is one of South Dakota’s best streams for whitewater paddlers. The stream drops 130 feet in eight miles between the SD Hwy 11 access west of Garretson, through Palisades State Park, to the SD Hwy 11 access north of Corson. There are stretches that can

be hazardous for the inexperienced white-water paddler. Access can be found at Palisades State Park, right-of-ways that cross the river, as well as McHardy Park in Brandon. The sheer walls of red quartzite that line portions of the creek provide a scenic trip for paddlers.

Vermillion River

Generally, this scenic river can be paddled from spring to fall from Centerville south to the Missouri River. Launching access may be found at rights-of-way that cross the river. Late summer and fall canoeing is best from the road crossing east of Wakonda to the Missouri River. Access may be found at the right-of-way that crosses the river. Colorful fall foliage is especially showy from Vermillion southward.

Missouri River

Exploring the Missouri River by canoe or kayak is an unforgettable experience. This river experience is not for the novice paddler. The Missouri is a big river that on windy days appears more like a large reservoir with white-capped waves that can easily swamp a canoe. There are no rapids, but sunken sandbars, snags and other obstacles abound. The Missouri is 20 feet or more deep in places. Two segments are administered by the National Park Service as the Missouri National Recreational River. For more details, see page 18.

Lakes

Many South Dakota state parks have lakes with easy access and are fun to paddle. Several lakes have a no-wake rule which makes them perfect for paddling, including Lake Yankton, near Chief White Crane Rec Area and Lake Alvin, near Harrisburg. Other popular lakes include Lake Herman, near Madison; Lake Vermillion, near Montrose, Lake Lakota, near Canton; Wall Lake, west of Sioux Falls; and Lake Mitchell. McCook Lake, near North Sioux City, has a kayak launch. Marindahl Lake, northeast of Yankton, is a quiet lake with an undeveloped shoreline where you can immerse yourself in the natural surroundings. For more info on lakes at state parks visit www.southeastsouthdakota.com/outdoor-adventure/ state-parks/. 16

Lewis & Clark Trail Follow The Corps of Discovery August 21, 1804:

The Corps of Discovery enter present-day South Dakota. Here in the “Garden of Eden,” food sources are plentiful. Joseph Fields shoots the party’s first buffalo. Interpretive signage is located at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve, North Sioux City. See one of the last free flowing segments of the Missouri River. Two stretches of the river, designated as the Missouri National Recreational River, are popular for boating, fishing, canoeing and kayaking.

August 22, 1804:

Following the death of Sgt. Floyd, Lewis and Clark need a sergeant to replace him. Patrick Gass receives 19 votes in the first election by U.S. citizens west of the Mississippi. This election was held where the town of Elk Point now stands. An exhibit in Elk Point tells the story.

August 25, 1804:

Area tribes believe that “little people” standing 18 inches tall and carrying arrows inhabit a prairie hill. The story sparks Lewis and Clark’s interest and they set off on foot to investigate. The men hike four hours, but at the top, the infamous devils are nowhere to be found. The explorers do, however, see an incredible sight: a herd of buffalo, nearly 800 of them, grazing in the distance. This is one of the very few places where we can say it is certain that they actually stood. You’ll find interpretive signage along the 3/4 mile trail to the summit and panoramic views of 300 acres of restored prairie grasses and wildflowers at Spirit Mound Historic Prairie, six miles north of Vermillion on Hwy. 19.

17

August 30, 1804:

The expedition has its first council with the Yankton Sioux. The explorers present the Yanktons with gifts of tobacco, flags and medals. The Yanktons prepare a feast. Interpretive signage is located at the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area Welcome Center near Yankton. The Lewis and Clark Visitor Center is another great place to learn more about the expedition, the tribes they encountered and the Missouri River itself. Built on a bluff overlooking Lewis and Clark Lake and the Gavins Point Dam, it is located across the bridge across the dam.

September 11, 1804:

After being separated from the party for over two weeks, Private George Shannon re-joins the keelboat. Shannon, the youngest member at age 19, had gotten lost on the prairie and run out of bullets. He went 12 days without food, except for wild grapes and a rabbit, which he shot using a piece of stick in place of a bullet. Interpretive signage is located at Snake Creek Rec Area near Platte.

September 2, 1806:

On the return trip Lewis and Clark meet up with a group of Yankton Sioux, realize they are friends, and smoke several pipes together as they exchange news. Chief Standing Bear Bridge, near Springfield, now spans the Missouri near the site of this meeting. A scenic lookout offers a spectacular view of the river. For more information about cities, attractions and lodging along the trail visit southeastsouthdakota.com/journey/ lewis-clark-trail.

Goat Island, Missouri River, photo by Greg Latza

Missouri National Recreational River South Dakota’s newest national park Preserving two stretches of the Missouri River and forming much of the border between South Dakota and Nebraska, it is also part of the nation’s Wild and Scenic River system. Congress added the 59-mile reach between Gavins Point Dam and Ponca State Park in 1978 and the 39-mile reach, which includes the lower 20 miles of the Niobrara River and the lower eight miles of Verdigre Creek, between Ft. Randall Dam and Running Water in 1991. In the eastern reach the “Big Muddy” is vast, flowing past chalk bluffs, some as high as 100 feet. The river valley is two miles wide in some places, evidence of the twists and turns the river has taken over several thousand years. Islands, bars, and chutes attest to the river’s dynamic character. The river in the western reach is more than 20 feet deep, with thick groves of willow and cottonwood trees growing on numerous islands and sandbars and limestone bluffs rising 250 feet along the banks. The main channel twists and turns in gnarled braids from one shore to the other, and the river flows slower, sometimes as slow as a lazy two miles per hour. The area provides habitat for several endangered and threatened bird and fish species. The MNRR area offers numerous opportunities for outdoor adventure.Campgrounds include Lewis and Clark Recreation Area near Yankton, Springfield Recreation Area near Springfield, and Clay County Park near Vermillion. These provide sites with electricity, cabins, showers, picnic shelters, trails and more. Goat Island, 800 acres of densely forested wildlife habitat, offers a quiet get away. With two miles of meandering trails,

primitive camping, and gentle river views this is a great place to experience this wonderful stretch of the Missouri River. Located near Vermillion between Myron Grove River Access and Clay County Park, Goat Island. Primitive camping is also available on Green Island, near Yankton. Both are only accessible by watercraft. Fishing and hunting are popular pastimes. Walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, and catfish are popular catches. In season hunters take goose, duck, quail, turkey, pheasant, and deer. Licenses required. Most visitors come to the Missouri National Recreational River for its refreshing water and outdoor experiences, but tours are available at the dam powerhouses and historic sites. The Lewis & Clark Visitor Center, built on a bluff overlooking the river, is a great place to learn more about the Lewis & Clark Expedition, the tribes they encountered and the river itself. The Meridian Bridge, now a pedestrian bridge, is notable as the first permanent river crossing in the Yankton vicinity and provides unique views of the river. Chief Standing Bear Memorial Bridge spans the Missouri southwest of Springfield. The bridge is named for a famous Ponca chief. Fishing Have some reel fun More than 175 fishing lakes, ranging in size up to 29,000 acres, make southeast South Dakota a fisherman’s paradise. Glacial lakes exist in this region in addition to numerous man-made lakes. With three major rivers, the Big Sioux, the James and the Missouri River, which includes Lewis and Clark Lake, a 30-mile-long reservoir, coursing through this region, the youngest to the oldest can go home with a whopper of a fish story. This region welcomes fishermen year-round with open seasons on most species of fish. Along with private and city campgrounds, 10 state parks and recreation areas provide over 1,000 campsites to fishing visitors. A host of resorts and hotels are available for those who prefer the comforts of soft beds and cable TV. The most fished species in this region include walleye, northern pike, channel catfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bullhead, bluegill, perch and crappie. Walleye and bass compete for top honors. Lewis and Clark Lake, above the Gavins Point Dam, draws anglers from across the nation with its alluring combination of largemouth and smallmouth bass. Walleye, sauger and catfish also make up the catches for Lewis and Clark anglers. Panfishermen will want to look for shallow weed beds during the spring and drop-offs during the summer. Still-fishing with a small jig or fly fishing with wet flies or small poppers is effective for bluegills. For young and old alike, nothing keeps fishing attention longer than bullheads. Good 19

Hunting Enjoy the outdoors with a friend Stop on any country road in Southeast South Dakota and find a hunter’s paradise. South Dakota’s state bird, the Ringnecked Pheasant, thrives in the excellent habitat provided by the South Dakota landscape. Thousands of hunters descend upon the Southeast Region of the state in the fall for their chance at the wily pheasant. Many hotels gear up for the season with special rates, and lodges such as Blue Tin Ranch by Vermillion, or River Valley Retreat close to Sioux Falls cater to hunters. Hunting guides are popular, like Mike Kuchera’s S.D. Guide Service Inc. out of Mitchell, to make all the arrangements for a hunting trip. Looking for a hunting lodge with acres of pheasant habitat nearby that will provide a guide and lodging with meals available? Contact Dakota Custom Hunt near Tabor. Hunting is a yearround sport in southeast South Dakota. Though pheasant and deer are the most popular, hunters will find a wide variety of abundant game.

Pheasant

Traditional season is Mid-October to early January. Season opens on October 15, 2022. Preserve season is September through March. Although pheasants are found statewide, the main pheasant range encompasses the eastern two-thirds of the state. Pheasants prefer agricultural fields, wooded draws, tree strips, wetlands and set-aside acres. Much of South Dakota is privately owned and permission is required to hunt, but public lands such as Game Production Areas and Walk-In Areas offer choice habitat for 21

www.southeastsouthdakota.com

pheasants. Early in the season, pheasants are scattered in small flocks, but winter’s fury pushes birds into heavy cover and concentrates them. Tree strips, cattail sloughs and dense weed patches hold pheasants this time of year. Search for small, out-of-the-way pockets that may have escaped the hunting pressure of large groups. Small sloughs, plum thickets or even fence line vegetation hold pheasants. Prepare for weather. Fall weather conditions range from 70 degrees to snow and below-zero wind chills.

East River Deer

Traditional Season for firearms is mid-late November through early December and archery from September through mid-January. Crops such as corn, oats, wheat, sunflowers and soybeans attract the whitetail deer population. Mule deer hunting is limited to counties bordering the Missouri River. Rolling pastures, tree strips, river bottoms and cattail sloughs provide escape cover for the deer. Licenses are issued through an application process.

Ducks

Traditional Season is from late September to December. More than 15 million ducks migrate annually through South Dakota. They include mallards, gadwall, pintails and teal. Along the Missouri River, the migration peaks in mid-Nov. with 600,000 ducks, primarily mallards. Plan early since nonresident waterfowl licenses are limited and issued by lottery drawing.

Geese

Canada Goose Season is September to December (November to mid February in some areas). Light Goose is Spring - Mid-February to early May, and in the fall - Late September to mid January. The Missouri River corridor is the main route for more than 400,000 migrating Canada geese, and eastern South Dakota attracts 350,000 snow and blue migrants.

Prairie Turkey

Traditional Season in the Spring for firearm and archery is from April to midMay, and fall prairie turkey, November through January. In the eastern portion of the state, turkeys prefer the woods and brushy hillsides of rivers, as well as tree belts. Licenses are issued through an application process.

Handicap Access

A Reduced Fee Hunting and Fishing License is available for persons with total disability and for disabled vets. A Disabled Hunter Permit authorizes a qualifying disabled hunter to lawfully shoot game animals from a stationary motor vehicle. You can find applications for these on www.gfp.sd.gov.

Bow Hunting

Enjoy bow hunting by going after attainable targets early in the season. Target animals should be large enough that there is a good chance of hitting it with an arrow. Whitetail deer are some of the best game animals to hunt for those new to bow hunting. Picking a good spot gives the best chance of success. Use a bow that is familiar and has had some practice. The arrows and arrowheads are very important. Proper arrow material and weight for the game you will be hunting is essential. The best odds for bagging a deer are found using a tree stand. Deer rarely look for food or predators above their eye level. This makes hunters almost invisible who are 20 to 30 feet above the ground. Hunters often mount a stationary stand in a prime spot, or bring a climbing stand to scale any tree that looks ideal. Archery classes are offered at The NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center in Yankton and at the Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls. Bowhunter basics and safety education is also available online at gfp.sd.gov.
