(Las Vegas, Nevada) Driverless Taxis Coming to The Strip
Get ready for the next trend in Las Vegas with driverless taxis. The autonomous vehicle company, Zoox, announced in November that they would be testing its robotaxis on the Strip, preparing to one day allow its driverless cars to transport tourists and locals along the boulevard. The taxis are still undergoing tests and will need final state approvals, but the driverless vehicle trend is rapidly expanding and while there have been some instances of error, ultimately, they have proven to be safer than vehicles with human drivers at the wheel.
(Kentucky) Kentucky Residents Wagered $2.9 Billion in the First 14-Months of Legal Sports Betting
According to a report from the Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation, Kentucky residents wagered $2.9 billion from September 2023 through October 2024 with $2.8 billion being wagered via online platforms and $100 million wagered at brick-and-mortar locations creating $46.1 million in tax revenue for the state.

The Super Bowl is the pinnacle of the NFL season and one of the most anticipated sporting events globally. Beyond its cultural and entertainment significance, it holds a special place for sports bettors. Over the years, the Super Bowl has generated unique betting trends, offering valuable insights for both novice and experienced gamblers. Point Spread Favorites vs. Underdogs

Historically, point spread favorites have had mixed results in the Super Bowl. From Super Bowl I to the present, favorites have covered the spread just over 50% of the time. However, recent years have shown a tilt toward underdogs. For instance, between Super Bowl XLII (2008) and Super Bowl LVI (2022), underdogs covered the spread in 10 of 15 games.
One of the most memorable examples of an underdog triumph was Super Bowl XLII when the New York Giants, a 12-point underdog, upset the undefeated New England Patriots. Bettors who backed the Giants against the spread (ATS) or on the moneyline enjoyed significant payouts. This game solidified the idea
that underdogs can offer tremendous value in high-pressure games.
The Moneyline: Straight-Up Winners
While point spreads are popular, betting on the moneyline—where bettors pick the outright winner— is another favored approach. Historically, the outright winner of the Super Bowl has also covered the spread in approximately 85% of games. This means that if you correctly predict the winner, there’s a high likelihood they will also cover the spread.
Recent examples highlight this trend. In Super Bowl LIV (2020), the Kansas City Chiefs were slight favorites against the San Francisco
49ers. Kansas City not only won but also covered the spread, rewarding moneyline and ATS backers alike. Conversely, when underdogs win outright, the payout for moneyline bets can be substantial, making it an enticing option for risk-tolerant bettors.
Totals (Over/Under) Betting
Past Trends:
Over/Under: 29-28
Super Bowl betting often sees significant action on the total points scored in the game, also known as the over/under. Historically, the over and under have been fairly balanced, with each outcome hitting at nearly an equal rate. However, certain eras of the NFL have skewed this trend. The early 2000s, dominated by strong defensive teams like the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, saw a string of lowscoring Super Bowls where the under hit. Conversely, the past decade has seen high-scoring offenses like the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams push games toward the over. For example, Super Bowl LII (2018) between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Patriots ended with a combined score of 74 points, obliterating the pregame total of 48.5.
Prop Bets: A World of Possibilities
Super Bowl prop bets have exploded in popularity, ranging from serious to whimsical. On-field props, such as the first player to score a touchdown or total passing yards for quarterbacks, often see heavy action. Notable prop bet successes include Super Bowl XLIX (2015), where bettors who took “Malcolm Butler to record an interception” at long odds reaped significant rewards. Off-field props have also grown in intrigue, including wagers on the length of the national anthem, the outcome of the coin toss, or the color of the Gatorade poured on the winning coach. Despite their novelty, some bettors use data to inform these wagers, such as tracking historical anthem lengths or Gatorade colors from past Super Bowls.
The Coin Toss: A 50/50 Proposition
While seemingly random, the Super Bowl coin toss is one of the most beton events of the game. Historically, the results are evenly split between heads and tails, as expected from a fair coin. However, trends emerge in streaks that capture bettors’ imaginations. For example, from Super Bowl XLII to Super Bowl XLVIII, tails came up six consecutive times. While the odds remain 50/50, this event continues to draw significant betting interest.

BLACKJACK STRATEGY: Mastering the Hard 16
When playing blackjack, the hard 16 is one of the most challenging hands to play. A hard 16, which consists of any combination of cards totaling 16 without an ace counted as 11 (I.e. 10-6 or 9-7), puts you in a precarious position. You’re one card away from busting, yet standing often leaves you at a significant disadvantage against the dealer.
Making the right decision requires a solid understanding of probabilities and basic strategy. In this column, we will break down the math and statistics behind playing this difficult hand.
THE RISKS OF A HARD 16: BY THE NUMBERS
To understand why the hard 16 is so problematic, consider these odds:
1. Chance of Busting if You Hit: When you hit on a hard 16, you’ll bust if you draw any card valued at 6 or higher. There are 16 cards in the deck valued between 6 and 10 (4 of each rank), plus the face cards (4 Jacks, 4 Queens, 4 Kings). That’s 20 cards out of 52, or roughly a 61.5% chance of busting with one hit.
2. Chance of the Dealer Beating a 16 if You Stand: If the dealer’s upcard is strong (7 through Ace), their likelihood of finishing with a hand total of 17 or higher is about 74%. This means standing on a hard 16 against a dealer’s strong card results in a loss approximately three-quarters of the time.
The combination of a high bust probability and the dealer’s strong finishing odds makes hard 16 one of the weakest positions in the game.
OPTIMAL STRATEGY FOR A HARD 16
The goal in blackjack is to minimize losses in unfavorable situations and maximize profits in favorable ones. Here’s how to approach the hard 16 based on probabilities:
1. Surrender When Available: If the table allows surrender, this is often the best move for a hard 16 when facing a strong dealer upcard. Surrendering forfeits half your bet, but it significantly reduces your expected loss.
When to Surrender: Surrender is statistically the best option when the dealer shows a 9, 10, or Ace. In these cases, your probability of losing is above 80% if you play out the hand.
Expected Value of Surrender: By surrendering, you lose only half of your initial bet rather than risking the full amount. For example, if your bet is $100, surrendering ensures a $50 loss, which is better than the typical expected loss of 77% of your bet if you hit or stand against these cards.
2. Hit Against Strong Dealer Cards (7 or Higher): If surrender isn’t an option, hitting is statistically better than standing when the dealer’s upcard is a 7, 8, 9, 10, or Ace.
Why Hit? The dealer’s probability of reaching a hand total of 17 or higher with these upcards is roughly 74%-83%, depending on the specific card. While hitting comes with a 61.5% chance of busting, it still gives you a chance to improve your hand and potentially win if the dealer busts.
Expected Outcomes of Hitting vs. Standing: Hitting on a hard 16 against a dealer’s strong card reduces your expected loss to about 52%-58% of your initial bet, depending on the dealer’s upcard. Standing, on the other hand, results in an expected loss closer to 77%.
3. Stand Against Weak Dealer Cards (2-6): When the dealer’s upcard is 2 through 6, it’s best to stand on a hard 16. These “bust cards” give the dealer a higher probability of busting because they are less likely to form a strong hand.
Dealer Bust Probabilities:
• Dealer shows 2: Bust probability is about 35%.
• Dealer shows 3: Bust probability is about 37%.
• Dealer shows 4: Bust probability is about 40%.
• Dealer shows 5: Bust probability is about 42%.
• Dealer shows 6: Bust probability is about 42%.
By standing, you avoid the high risk of busting (61.5%) and rely on the dealer’s relatively high chance of failing to reach 17.
4. Always Split a Pair of 8s: If your hard 16 is made up of two 8s, splitting is always the correct move, regardless of the dealer’s upcard.
WHY SPLIT?
A hard 16 has an expected loss of about 52%-77%, depending on the dealer’s upcard. By splitting, you create two separate hands starting with 8, each of which has significantly better potential.
After splitting, the average winning probability for each new hand improves to around 43%-49%, depending on the dealer’s upcard.
By trusting the probabilities and sticking to basic strategy, you can approach the hard 16 with confidence, knowing you’re playing the best possible game.
BACCARAT STRATEGY: A Statistical Guide to Winning Decisions
Baccarat, one of the oldest and most elegant casino games, is deceptively simple yet deeply strategic. The game involves two hands—the Player and the Banker—and your goal is to bet on which will have a total closest to 9, or if the two hands will tie. While the rules are straightforward, understanding the probabilities behind baccarat is key to making informed bets and improving your odds.
This column breaks down the statistical aspects of baccarat, including probabilities of outcomes, house edges, and optimal betting strategies.
HOW BACCARAT WORKS
Baccarat uses a standard deck of 52 cards, with card values as Aces worth 1, cards 2-9 retain their face value, 10’s and face cards (King, Queen, Jack) are worth 0.
The hand total is calculated by summing the values of the cards and using only the last digit of the sum. For example, a hand of 7 and 8 totals 15, which is reduced to 5.
The game offers three main bets, a Player Bet, wagering that the Player hand will win, a Banker Bet, betting on the Banker hand to win and the Tie Bet, predicting that the Player and Banker hands will have the same total.
THE PROBABILITIES OF BACCARAT OUTCOMES
The simplicity of baccarat belies its intricate statistical structure. Here’s a breakdown of the probabilities for the three main bets based on an eight-deck shoe (the most common setup):
Banker Bet Probabilities: Probability of winning: 45.86%; Probability of losing: 44.62%; Probability of a tie: 9.52%
The Banker bet wins slightly more often because the Banker hand is dealt after the Player hand, giving it a slight advantage in drawing cards.
Player Bet Probabilities: Probability of winning: 44.62%; Probability of losing: 45.86%; Probability of a tie: 9.52%
Tie Bet Probabilities: Probability of occurrence: 9.52%
Playing the tie is risky because while a tie pays out 8:1 (or 9:1 in some casinos), its low probability and high house edge make it a less favorable option for most players.
HOUSE EDGE ANALYSIS
The house edge is a critical factor in baccarat strategy, reflecting the casino’s long-term profit margin on each bet type:
1. Banker Bet House edge is 1.06%. After accounting for the 5% commission typically charged on Banker winnings, it remains the most statistically advantageous bet in baccarat.
2. Player Bet House edge is 1.24%. While slightly higher than the Banker bet, it’s still favorable compared to many other casino games.
3. Tie Bet House edge: 14.36% (with 8:1 payout). This is one of the worst bets you can make in baccarat. Despite its enticing payout, the tie’s infrequent occurrence makes it highly disadvantageous.
STATISTICAL IMPLICATIONS FOR STRATEGY
1. Stick to the Banker Bet: The Banker bet offers the best odds in baccarat, with a winning probability of 45.86% and a low house edge of 1.06%. Over the long run, this is the most mathematically sound wager.
2. Avoid the Tie Bet: Although the tie bet offers a high payout, the probability of a tie (9.52%) and the high house edge (14.36%) make it a poor choice. Statistically, betting on a tie will result in significant losses over time.
3. Player Bet as an Alternative: If you’re looking for variety, the Player bet is an acceptable alternative to the Banker bet. While it has a slightly higher house edge (1.24%), the difference is minimal, and there’s no commission on winnings.
4. Understand Streaks: Baccarat often sees streaks where the Banker or Player wins multiple hands in a row. While tempting to bet on streaks, remember that baccarat outcomes are independent events. Statistically, the odds reset with each hand, regardless of prior results.
PROBABILITY OF NATURAL WINS
A “natural” occurs when either the Player or Banker is dealt an initial total of 8 or 9. Natural wins end the round immediately unless both hands have naturals, in which case the higher total wins, or it’s a tie if both totals are equal. The probability of a natural is 15.35% with the Player natural being 7.65% and a Banker natural being 7.70%. The slightly higher probability for the Banker natural underscores the Banker bet’s statistical advantage.
OPTIMIZING YOUR PLAY WITH MONEY MANAGEMENT
Even with a low house edge, baccarat is still a negativeexpectation game, meaning the casino will always have an advantage over time.
TO MAXIMIZE YOUR EXPERIENCE:
1. Set Limits: Establish a budget for how much you’re willing to bet and stick to it.
2. Take Advantage of Banker Runs: While outcomes are independent, sticking with the Banker bet during a streak can be rewarding.
3. Avoid Chasing Losses: Accept losses as part of the game and resist the urge to increase bets irrationally.

POKER: Protecting Your Hand
PROTECTING YOUR HAND
You have K-K. A jackal raises before the flop, you then make it three bets (reraise), and an elephant behind you calls the three bets “cold” (without having any money already invested in the pot). The jackal then calls the one additional bet.
The flop comes 10-9-2 and the jackal bets, you raise, and the elephant calls the two bets. The jackal also calls two bets. The turn card comes up a two, for 10-9-2-2, and now the jackal bets out into you. At this point you should be thinking, “Raise it!” But you’re distracted by the conversation going on at the table, and you just call the bet. Now the elephant calls the bet too.
This is the most costly mistake, since you have now let the elephant call only one bet with his A-9, and the last card off is an ace, for 10-9-22-A. Now the jackal checks and you decide to check as well, because you fear the ace may have hit the elephant. Then the elephant bets and the jackal calls, and you call as well. The elephant says, “I have 2 pair, aces up.” You think, “I can’t believe he hit an ace on me!” Wrong! You misplayed this hand! All you had to do was raise after the two came up on fourth street, and the elephant would have been forced to throw his hand away! Your call on the end might also fall into the mistake category because the card you had legitimate reason to fear, the ace, hit the board, and a bet and a call were already in front of you.
Let’s rewrite the script. So you are making the obvious raise on fourth street. A deuce comes off the deck for 10-9-2-2, and the jackal bets out into you. You don’t really think the jackal has a 2, so you raise and the elephant reluctantly folds his hand. The jackal calls your raise. The river card is an ace, for 10-9-2-2-A, and the jackal checks. You say, “Pocket kings for me” and the jackal says, “Nice hand.” The elephant loudly complains, “I would have made aces and nines if I’d stayed in, but I couldn’t call, because your raise on fourth street told me you had me beaten!”
This first example is about “protecting your hand” with a raise on fourth street. If you fail to
do that, you give your opponents a chance to outdraw you for just one bet. The next example is another fairly obvious play, but in the other direction—folding!
KNOWING WHEN TO FOLD ‘EM
Two opponents have called the bet before the flop, and now you make it two bets to go with Jc-Js on the button. The big blind and both other opponents call the raise, and the flop comes 2d-3d-Qs. The big blind checks, the first “limper” bets out and the second limper folds. You raise to find out “where you are at” and the big blind calls. The remaining limper, whose play falls somewhere between a lion and jackal (he’s a fairly strong player who’s sometimes unpredictable), now reraises, making it 3 bets to go. You call, and now the big blind calls.
Fourth street brings 4d, for 2d-3d-Qs-4d, the big blind checks and the limper bets out. You fold because you can’t beat a pair of queens or a flush. What hand could the limper make it three bets with on the flop, and nonetheless be a hand you can now beat?
If he has a flush draw, then he hits his flush. If he has a pair of queens, then you are already beat. If he has a “set” (trips made with a pocket pair like 2-2 and a 2 on the board, then you are also beat). Of course, it is possible the limper is overplaying a pair of threes, like A-3 (with 2-3-Q on board) or something similar, but it is very unlikely he would reraise on the flop with that hand. About the only realistic hope for you is for the limper to three-bet with A-K, a hand your jacks still beat. That is certainly not an impossible holding, but are you willing to pay off big bets on both the turn and the river to find out if you are right? If the limper is willing to push A-K on the turn, there is a very realistic possibility he will push one more time with it on the river. I won’t carry the script of this hand further, but suffice to say you made the right play, because there is almost no hand you can beat at this point in the hand. Chasing (calling) on the strength of the slight hope the limper is playing like a maniac and pushing his A-K will gouge big chunks out of your bankroll over the long run.
