RACETRACK ROYALTY: OUR TOP PICKS

In 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to speak about my all for charity thoroughbred horse racing novel (Heaven’s Premier Horse Race) at a fundraising event in Saratoga Springs, New York. As a result, yours truly was able to sneak away and spend an afternoon “playing the ponies” at Saratoga Racecourse (i.e., the oldest operating sporting amphitheater in North America)! Now ever since I had started wagering on the “Sport of Kings” at age 20, my fellow railbirds had always told me, “Eric, you have got to get up to Saratoga one of these days!” Admittedly, upon walking into “The Spa” (Saratoga Racecourse) I promptly perceived that it was indeed a “Horse Racing Heaven” right here on Earth! Accordingly, what follows is my impression of Saratoga and some bonus intelligence concerning four other racetracks that every “turf enthusiast” simply must visit before they go on to glory!

Saratoga Racecourse – Saratoga Springs, New York

My enduring memory of Saratoga Racecourse is the fact that though I came through the turnstiles on a seemingly average Wednesday, the surrounding masses were dressed like it was Kentucky Derby Day! Even the

debutante selling popcorn was made up like she was an heiress to an oil company. Similarly, the wandering population of gentlemen produced a beautiful shifting pastel tapestry thanks to their bright colored jackets and matching seersucker slacks.

Going to Saratoga Racecourse is like stepping back in time 100 years and is considered the oldest sporting venue of any kind in the United States. The place just exudes class, and to be honest, the stench of money permeates every nook and cranny. The Spa is one of the last remaining racetracks to have a designated “$50 Window” and on the day I was there, a swinging jazz quartet was set up on the concourse that runs beneath the Main Grandstand. There is no shortage of fine dining opportunities on property however if one has the means, then I would highly recommend the “1863 Club” for what I would term “premium hospitality”. Lastly, the quality of horse flesh which wreaths Saratoga’s oval is entirely top tier. In fact, though it’s usually only open from mid-July to early September, “The Spa” is nevertheless home to North America’s most prestigious thoroughbred horse racing meet!

SARATOGA RACECOURSE - SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK

Keenland Racecourse – Lexington, Kentucky

If you leave Saratoga Springs and drive southwest for about 11 hours, you will arrive at the gates of another “must see” thoroughbred horse racing complex. Opened in 1936, Keenland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky is unique within the industry because inside this patch of bluegrass, it’s just as much about the “sales ring” as it is about racing. In fact, eleven Keenland sales graduates were entered in this year’s (150th) edition of the Kentucky Derby! Moreover, graduates of the Keenland sales program include twenty-four Kentucky Derby Champions all-time including your 2018 Triple Crown Champion Justify.

Although it is a major prep race along the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” (Offering 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner) Keenland’s “Bluegrass Stakes” truly stands alone as an achievement which eternally cements an equine’s legacy. Some of your more famous Bluegrass Stakes Champions include Spectacular Bid (1979 Kentucky Derby Champion), Skip Away (1997 Breeders’ Cup Classic Champion) and Essential Quality (2021 Belmont Stakes Champion).

As if Keenland’s surrounding rolling hills (complete with grazing horses) didn’t offer enough ambiance, the racetrack is currently constructing a three story “Paddock Building” which will extend the entire length of the Paddock and Walking Ring. Here patrons will discover dietary delicacies, new bar concepts, a panoramic rooftop experience and more! Additionally, a new Jockeys’ Quarters will be carved into the Paddock Building, providing a unique viewing experience where jockeys will walk directly through the venue before getting “a leg up”!

Santa Anita Racetrack – Arcadia, California

Although Horace Greely wasn’t necessarily talking to horse players when he said, “Go west young man go west”, we are still going to heed his advice concerning the next stop on our “must see racetracks” tour. Drenched in “Art Deco” style architecture and set against the majestic San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Anita Racetrack is located in

Arcadia, California on the outskirts of Los Angeles and is undoubtedly the crown jewel of those flat ovals located west of the Mississippi.

Opened on Christmas Day in 1936 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, Santa Anita Racetrack is aptly nicknamed “The Great Race Place”. Owning the capacity to comfortably seat 80,000 fans, Santa Anita has consequently played host to the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on eleven occasions! Moreover, if you have ever seen the movie Seabiscuit (2003), you are aware that the Santa Anita Handicap (or Big Cap) was the first thoroughbred horse race to offer a purse worth six figures!

I can unequivocally say that Santa Anita Racetrack is a literal eutopia for any horseplayer who retains “champagne tastes”. See, there is no shortage of high roller rooms and plush parlors at “The Great Race Place” and if you can part with a few pennies, I suggest that you “run the gamut” and tour: the Suites at Santa Anita, the 100-1 Club, the Directors’ Room, Club Court, Silks 5th Floor, the Baldwin Terrace Conference Room, the Winners’ Terrace and Clockers’ Corner. Personally, I am hoping to one day shmooze my way into the “Suites at Santa Anita”. Here, a horse lover will have a head on collision with a vantage point that is directly above the finish line, a panoramic view of the entire oval, high end cocktail bar service, Club House access, roaming concierges and a menu prepared by Santa Anita’s legendary culinary staff!

Del Mar Racetrack – Del Mar, California

Del Mar Racetrack is one of the premier horse racing meccas in the country known for its top tier racing, astounding beauty, vibrant atmosphere, and rich history dating back to 1937 when legendary entertainer Bing Crosby and his Hollywood friends made it their playground and an iconic destination for horse racing enthusiasts and tourists alike.

The racetrack is situated along the picturesque Southern California coastline, offering breathtaking ocean views

KEENLAND RACECOURSE - LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY
SANTA ANITA RACETRACK - ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA

and a cool, coastal climate, making it a perfect summer destination. The slogan “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” aptly captures the unique charm of Del Mar, where visitors can enjoy world-class racing while basking in the seaside ambiance.

Del Mar Racetrack boasts a state-of-the-art facility with a one-mile dirt track and a seven-furlong turf course, providing a thrilling experience for both spectators and participants. The track hosts several prestigious events, including the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s summer meet and the Breeders’ Cup, attracting top horses, jockeys, and trainers from around the world.

Beyond the races, Del Mar offers an array of entertainment options, from live music concerts and food festivals to family-friendly activities and luxury accommodations. Its lively social scene, combined with its storied legacy and top-notch racing, makes Del Mar Racetrack a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an unforgettable horse racing experience.

Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort – Hot Springs, Arkansas

Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort, located in beautiful Hot Springs, Arkansas, has a storied history as one of the premier Thoroughbred racetracks in the country since 1904. A $100 million expansion completed in 2021 introduced a whole new level of luxury while keeping the historic charm it is known for worldwide. With a hotel and plenty of dining, sports betting and entertainment options, Oaklawn offers a world-class tourist destination where you can stay, play and get away. The property enhancements brought resort-style amenities for guests to enjoy, the racing still remains an anchor tenant and is where it all began. Playing host to the Racing Festival of the South and $1.25 million Arkansas Derby, horseplayers get the chance to watch and wager on some of the world’s best thoroughbreds and their connections. In 2015, the track helped launch the near-perfect season of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, who won both the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby in route to becoming

the first horse in 37 years to win in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

Area Hot Spots: Bathhouse Row on Central Avenue is filled with spas, dining, craft breweries and shopping. Also check out the Grand Promenade in the park for thermal waters or venture up to the Hot Springs Mountain Tower for a stunning view of the Ouachita Mountains.

Gulfstream Park – Hallandale, Florida

As we continue our tour of top racetracks, we return to the East coast to round out the list. Florida has always been a hotbed for thoroughbred horse racing and even though those ancient equine cathedrals like Hialeah Racecourse and Calder Racecourse have gone the way of the Dodo Bird, the Sunshine State still showcases one gem of an oval. Undergoing a $130 million dollar renovation from 2004 to 2006, Gulfstream Park Racecourse hence morphed into an elite destination for those who passionately pursue the “Sport of Kings”.

Patrons who take a direct walking route into Gulfstream Park are destined to traverse an area called “The Village”. The only problem with this “high-end” compilation of fashion, art and dining experiences is that one could literally get lost in the surrounding ambiance and hence

DEL MAR RACETRACK - DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA
OAKLAWN RACING CASINO RESORT – HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS
Gulfstream Park – Hallandale, Florida

forget that there is a world class racetrack just around the corner. Incidentally, if you are a connoisseur of fine tobacco, be sure to visit “Royal Cigars” within The Village so you can suitably celebrate when your horse enters the winners’ enclosure!

In my humble opinion, Gulfstream Park’s paddock is second to none within the landscape of American thoroughbred horse racing. Adorned with a gushing fountain at its center, this walking ring is set beneath a bending two-story stone “Colosseum like” structure that is complete with ornate pillars and extravagant arches. Once the horses are saddled and paired with their riders, they are led down a private adjacent boulevard that funnels onto the main track.

To say the least, Gulfstream Park’s Main Grandstand and infield are ridiculously lavish. When it comes to the Main Grandstand, you will pretty much feel like a Roman Emperor overlooking Antioch no matter where you sit. Nonetheless, coughing up the few extra bucks for a box seat is a worthwhile investment. The infield’s behemoth tote board and viewing monitor allows patrons to keep right on top of the action and just a word to the wise; be sure to pinch part of your bankroll back for some postrace action in the Main Grandstand’s second floor casino!

Churchill Downs – Louisville, Kentucky

It is no coincidence that with regards to our “must see” racetracks tour, we have saved the best for last. Located in Louisville, KY and home to the world’s most regaled horse race, Churchill Downs is more than just a racetrack. On the contrary, it is its own sequestered institution.

I could literally fill a thousand issues of Gaming and Destinations Magazine if I went “in-depth” concerning Churchill Downs storied and illustrious history. That said, I will share that the famous “Twin Spires” that overlook

Churchill Downs were erected in 1895; twenty years after the first running of the Kentucky Derby (won by Aristides in 1875). One year later in 1896, the tradition of adorning the Kentucky Derby Champion with a garland of Red Roses officially commenced. Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2024, the Kentucky Derby remains the longest continually held major sporting event in the United States. Over the past decade, the track has undergone hundreds of millions of dollars of renovations and updates that have ultimately delivered what is today a horse players and socialites ideal set up. The most recent renovation was unveiled before this year’s 150th Kentucky Derby with a $200 million redesign of the main paddock area that has tremendously enhanced the visibility of the iconic Twin Spires and updated the audio-visual experience with large screens and speakers strategically placed around the grounds. In addition, more 3,600 permanent all-inclusive seats and an additional 7,000 sq. ft. of guest space was introduced that includes two new premium clubs, Woodford Reserve Paddock Club and Club SI, that both offer premium reserved dining and rail boxes, along with more than 3,200 standing room only tickets for big race days.

I would be remiss if I did not mention that the Kentucky Derby Museum is located right next to Churchill Downs. If you are obsessed with the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” (and really, who isn’t) then I would highly recommend that you get to the track a couple hours before post time and take a head-first dive into this highly immersive experience. Museum goers can select from a variety of “itineraries” however if you opt for the extended five hour tour, you’ll ingest: two floors of intriguing exhibits, a journey that takes you through certain parts of Churchill Downs that are usually closed to the public, a short film titled “The Greatest Race”, lunch at the Derby Café, a flight of choice bourbon and a trip to the “Derby Store” for more complimentary goodies!

Area Hot Spots: Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse, Malone’s Steakhouse, Jack Fry’s, Pat’s Steakhouse, Porcini Italian Restaurant Casual and Local: Kern’s Korner, Check’s Café, Wagner’s Pharmacy

While the flat racing strips I have chronicled in this article are undisputedly “top shelf” there are many other worthwhile ovals spread across our country (and the world for that matter). With the advent of technology, it is naturally easier to watch and wager at home via a simulcast feed, however if I can be frank, relegating the “Sport of Kings” to a “remote experience” is parallel to kissing your sister. Therefore, I suggest you get up off the couch so you can live out the grandeur of thoroughbred horse racing firsthand! Even if it is at a less prestigious hippodrome than those mentioned here, there is nothing like beholding rippling horseflesh, hearing the thunderous sound of hooves pounding against the Earth, and having cold hard cash deposited right into your hot little hand after selecting a winner!

Tips and Strategies for Betting Baseball and Football

We are in the midst of another baseball season as the second half of the season is upon us and teams are rallying for a playoff run. In addition to baseball, football teams are in full swing for their summer practices and fine tuning their rosters for what we hope will be another season full of fireworks and exciting plays.

As we get into the second half of baseball, and prep for a new season of football, there will be plenty of prime betting opportunities for you to take advantage of. As with any sport, betting on baseball and football involves more than just luck, it requires a strategic approach to maximize your chances of winning. Whether you’re a seasoned bettor or a novice looking to improve your skills, understanding the nuances of each sport and implementing effective strategies can make a significant difference in your success. In this article, we’ll explore key tips and strategies for betting on baseball and football, providing examples and insights to help you make informed decisions.

Baseball Betting Strategies

Baseball betting requires understanding multiple scenarios that will play into the outcome of the game including pitching matchups, team statistics, and other situational factors to consider before making your wagering decision.

Starting Pitchers: The starting pitchers heavily influence the outcome of a baseball game. Research their recent performance, ERA (Earned Run Average), WHIP (Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched), and how they fare against the opposing team’s lineup. If a team has a dominant pitcher facing a lineup struggling against their pitching style, betting on that team’s Money Line might be advantageous.

Bullpen Strength: Assess the bullpen’s reliability and effectiveness. A strong bullpen can protect a lead late in the game, influencing bets on the Run Line or Total Runs. If a team has a weak bullpen that often blows leads, betting on the opposing team’s Total Runs or betting against them in late-game scenarios could be prudent.

Home vs. Away Performance: Consider teams’ performance at home versus away. Some teams excel in their home stadium due to familiarity with field dimensions and fan support. Betting on a home team with a strong record at home against a struggling away team might be a favorable Money Line bet.

Weather and Field Conditions: Weather conditions, such as wind speed and direction, and field conditions, like grass or artificial turf, can impact scoring and game dynamics. In windy conditions favoring hitters, betting on the Over for Total Runs might be advantageous.

Football Betting Strategies

Just like baseball betting, football betting also requires research and analyzing factors such as team performance, player injuries, coaching strategies, and situational factors. Here are a few key factors to consider for your next pigskin play.

Team Form and Momentum: Assess teams’ recent performances, including their offensive and defensive statistics, winning streaks, and performance against similar opponents. Betting on a team with a strong offense facing a weak defensive team might be a good bet on the Spread or Total Points.

Injuries and Roster Changes: Injuries to key players can significantly impact a team’s performance. Monitor injury reports and how absences affect team

dynamics. If a star quarterback is injured, betting against their team’s Spread might be a prudent strategy.

Coaching and Strategy: Understand coaches’ tendencies, such as their play-calling preferences in different game situations, and how these impact game outcomes. Betting on a team with a coach known for aggressive play-calling in crucial situations might lead to higher scoring, favoring bets on the Total Points.

Home Field Advantage: Consider the impact of home field advantage, including crowd noise, familiarity with playing conditions, and travel fatigue for visiting teams. Betting on a team with a strong home record against a struggling away team might be favorable on the Money Line or Spread.

Common Strategies for Betting Sports

While there may be factors to consider for betting baseball and football that are unique to each other, there are similarities that can be applied to any sport when you are ready to laydown that winning wager.

Bankroll Management: Set a budget for betting and avoid chasing losses. Stick to a consistent betting strategy and avoid placing large bets on impulse.

Line Shopping: Compare betting lines from multiple sportsbooks to find the best odds, and with the

availability of several online resources, it is easier than ever to find variance among different sites. Even a slight difference in odds can significantly impact your profitability in the long run.

Contrarian Betting: Consider betting against the public consensus when the opportunity arises. Public perception can sometimes create value on the opposite side of popular bets.

Research and Analysis: Invest time in researching teams, players, statistics, and trends. Use reputable sources and data analytics to inform your betting decisions. Even a simple google search for “Starting pitcher comparisons” or “Home verse away records” can inspire thought provoking ways to make your next play.

In conclusion, successfully betting on baseball and football requires a blend of knowledge, strategy, and discipline. By understanding the nuances of each sport, analyzing key factors that influence game outcomes, and implementing effective betting strategies, you can improve your chances of making profitable bets. Remember to approach sports betting responsibly, manage your bankroll wisely, and continuously refine your strategies based on experience and insights gained. With these tips and strategies in hand, you’ll be better equipped to navigate the complexities of sports betting and maximize your potential for success.

LEARN THE LINGO

Action: Having a wager on a game.

Bad Beat: Losing a seemingly winning wager.

Cover: When the favored team wins by more than the point spread.

Cashout: An option offered by many sportsbooks in which bettors can accept a payout before a wager reaches its end.

Chalk: The favorite in the game. People said to be “chalk” bettors typically bet the favorite.

Handle: The amount of money taken by a sportsbook on an event or the total amount of money wagered.

Hold, vig, juice: The hold is the difference between what has been taken in by the sportsbook and what has been paid out. Vig (short for “vigorish”), also known as juice, is the premium it charges for taking the bet, such as 10%.

Hook: A half-point. If a team is a 7.5-point favorite, it is said to be “laying seven and a hook.”

Money Line: Betting on which team will win the game outright.

Props (Proposition Bets): Betting on specific events within the game, such as which player will score first or how many home runs will be hit.

Parlay: A single wager that combines multiple selections into one bet. To win, all chosen selections must be correct; if any selection loses, the entire parlay loses.

Spread: Betting on the margin of victory, with one team favored to win by a certain number of points.

Teaser: A bet that adjusts the point spread in the bettor’s favor in exchange for having to pick multiple winners to win the wager. The odds are less favorable than on a parlay.

Totals (Over/Under): Betting on whether the total points scored in the game will be over or under a specified number.

POKER: Calling with Suited Connectors

In the last issue we covered playing with suited connectors and when t make your move. In this column, I would like to expand on the idea behind calling two bets with suited connectors to try to win a big pot. I look for a lot of opponents when I consider calling two bets with this hand. It doesn’t make sense for me to call two bets with 8h-9h when no one else has called before the flop. In other words, I’m looking for good pot odds for this type of drawing hand. An occasional big pot pays for a lot of failed attempts.

Suppose that someone raises before the flop in early position and now two other people call the raise in front of me. I’m on the button with 4d-5d. I simply fold this hand, because 4-5 is below the suited connector line that I like to maintain. In this same situation, if I have 7-8 suited, then I’ll go ahead and call the raise, trying to get lucky on the flop or later.

Suppose that a mouse (A supertight player who always has a strong hand when he bets and is thus often predictable.) in early position makes it two bets to go and now two other players call the two bets in front of me. I’m on the button with 9c-10c. In this case, although two other players have already called the raise, I’ll probably fold my hand because the original raiser is a mouse. (When a mouse raises in early position, I’m always looking for an excuse to fold as soon as possible!) Of course, if the original raiser isn’t a mouse, I would call with my 9c-10c. My rule for playing suited connectors is this: if two other people have called two bets (a raise), then I’ll call with my hand (assuming that it’s above the 4-5 line).

Now that we’ve discussed calling with suited connectors, let’s discuss calling with suited connectors when you’re in the blinds. Usually, I will call two bets in the big blind with any suited connectors, even the weak ones like 2-3. After all, in the big blind it will cost me only one more bet to call, since I have posted one bet already. In the small blind, too, I will defend with most suited connectors, but I’ll usually draw the line at 4-5 suited because it will probably cost me 1½ bets more to call the two bets in the

small blind. With 10-J or J-Q suited, I’m usually willing to call three bets in the blinds.

If I have 6-7 suited on the big blind and a mouse has made it two bets to go, then I will call if at least one other opponent calls, and I may call if I’m the only one left in the pot. Although I don’t like to mess with a mouse’s raise, the 6-7 suited in the big blind may bring a big reward for me if I hit the flop, and of course it will cost me only one more bet to see if I hit it. Moreover, a mouse is generally east to read: he probably has a big pair of A-K high when he raises before the flop.

By risking one more bet to call before the flop, I may win a lot of bets from the mouse. And if I run into a troublesome flop like 10-6-4, then I can usually figure out fairly easily whether the mouse has beaten me or not. Again, in general I don’t like to mess with a mouse’s preflop raise, but being in the big blind ( a discount) with suited connected cards is the time and place to do it.

If I have any suited connected hand in the big blind before the flop, then I’ll call someone’s raise (two-bet), period.

If I have J-Q or 10-J suited (they’re both worth about the same before the flop) in the blinds, then I will in general call three bets (a reraise) before the flop. Of course there are exceptions: a mouse’s three bets will force me to lay down my hand for sure! I have learned that it’s very hard to beat Q-Q, K-K, A-A, or A-K with Q-J or 10-J suited! Use your own discretion when you’re deciding to call three bets with J-Q or 10-J suited in the small blind. If you have a bad feeling that the three bettor has a big pair, then just throw your hand away before the flop. Remember, you’re getting only a half-bet discount, not much compared with the 2½ bets you would need to add, and you’ll be playing the hand out of position for every betting round. The same thing applies to Q-J or 10-J suited in the big blind, although calling isn’t ever a terrible play unless it’s against someone who is a consistent mouse.

IF I HAVE ANY SUITED CONNECTED HAND IN THE BIG BLIND BEFORE THE FLOP, THEN I’LL CALL SOMEONE’S RAISE (TWO-BET), PERIOD.

CRAPS: Top Superstitions

Do you believe in superstitions? By definition, a superstition is the belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief. Well, when it comes to luck, some people firmly believe in superstitions, and that is fine. You might take the same route to the casino for every visit. Maybe you enter the same door or take the exact amount of cash in a certain denomination of bills. Whatever it might be, you do you, and let others do them. Whether you believe in them or not, there are some things you just don’t say or do at the craps table unless you want to upset some of your table mates. Keep these simple suggestions in mind the next time you roll the dice and you should be high fiving the night away!

1. Never call out the number seven. It’s like the dice have ears and since most players play the pass line, seven is bad after the point is established. It’s also a good way to get the other players at the table mad at you. If you need to call for it, then call it by its nickname, big red.

2. Don’t let the dice hit you when they are rolling. The shooter at the other end of the table has the dice and tosses them to your end while you’re making a bet. The dice hit your hand and come up a seven. Another bad mistake. Everyone at the table will be mad at you. Make your bets early and listen for the stickman to call out “the shooter has the dice” or something to signal to raise your hands.

3. When the dice go off the table, always request the same dice. Many people believe that changing the dice will cause a disruption in the flow of the game and therefore cause a seven out. To avoid this, they request the same dice. If the dice are hot, then stick with the same dice.

4. When calling for an eleven to be rolled, call for it by its craps nickname, yo. The only time you really want an eleven to be rolled is on the come-out roll. Calling it by its nickname

seems to make it more likely the eleven will be rolled. At least it gets you involved in the game with the other players and hides the fact you’re a beginner.

5. Craps rolls come in pairs. It seems like once one craps roll occurs, then the very next roll will be another craps. You’ll often see people make the “any craps” bet after the first craps roll.

6. A woman who’s a beginner will always have a good first turn as a shooter. Lady Luck will shine when a woman playing craps for the first time throws the dice. You should bet the pass line if the shooter is a woman, just in case she’s a rookie.

7. Never play at a craps table by yourself. The reason no one is playing at that table is because it’s cold. Playing alone won’t change the table’s luck. Instead, find a table with a good number of players and a lot of noise. These are the tables that are hot.

8. Try to throw the dice so they roll as little as possible. It’s believed that the more the dice actually tumble, the more chance they have of coming up seven.

9. You have better luck when you throw the dice off the mirror on the table. Many craps players believe that if you shoot the dice off the mirror, the dice will land favorably for the players. The mirror on the craps table is located on the opposite wall from the dealers. Casino personnel will discourage this activity because it damages the dice and the mirror.

10. After the point is established, you always place the points opposite. The odds are the same as hitting the point or hitting its opposite, so many believe that the opposite will have a greater chance of coming up than the point. Here are the possible points and their opposites: point of four, opposite ten; point of five, opposite nine; point of six, opposite eight; point of eight, opposite six; point of nine, opposite five; point of ten, opposite four. Pairs of opposites always add up to fourteen.

SLOTS: How to Read a Slot Machine

Most people look at the vast array of slot machines at the casino and think they are all alike. They see a handle, coin slot and flashing lights and figure one is as good as another. What they are missing is a lot of valuable information that can help determine if and how they play a certain slot machine.

Not all machines are the same and the way to separate one machine from another is to learn how to “Read” a machine by looking at the pay out schedule on the front. Let’s take a look at a typical slot machine and see what information can be found.

First of all you will find the denomination of the coin needed to play the machine. I don’t know how many times I have seen a person drop a quarter into a machine only to get a confused look when the coin drops through and back into the tray. Upon closer observation they discover they tried to put a quarter in a dollar machine. This is the first thing you should look for.

There are several types of machines that you need to be aware of:

Multiplier: This machine has a pay out for a certain symbol and the number of coins played multiplies it. If the machine pays 5 coins for three lemons when you play one coin, it would pay 10 for the second coin and 15 for three coins played. This machine does not penalize you for not playing maximum coins. If you plan to play only one coin at a time, this is the type of machine you should look for.

Bonus Multiplier: This machine operates the same as the multiplier except that it offers a bonus when you play maximum coins and hit the jackpot. Three 7’s may pay 1,000 for one coin, 2,000 for two coins and 10,000 for maximum coins. You need to decide if the bonus is worth playing the extra coin.

Multiple Payline: These machines have more than one line of play. Each coin activates a particular line. If you hit a winner

on a line that is not activated, you will not receive anything. The older machines used to have three lines but the newer video slots can have up to nine lines.

Buy-a-Pay: These are the most misunderstood machines in the casino. Each coin activates a different pay out. You need the maximum coins to receive the largest jackpot. One example is the “Sizzlin 7’s” machines. The machine will pay on cherries, bars and sevens. The sevens pay 1,000 coins. If you play one coin you can collect only on the cherries. If you play two coins you can collect on cherries and bars. You need three coins in to collect on the Sizzlin 7’s. If you hit the jackpot with one coin in YOU WILL NOT WIN ANYTHING!!! Do not play this machine under any circumstances unless you are playing the maximum coins.

Progressive Slots: The progressive slots take a certain percentage of the money played and add it to a pool for the top jackpot. “Megabucks” or “Quarter Mania” are examples of machines from several casinos linked together to offer a life changing jackpot. Keep in mind that the percentage of the payback on the lesser wins is lowered to allow for the big prize. Some casinos have machines linked together within their own casino to offer mini-progressive jackpots. NEVER PLAY A PROGRESSIVE WITH LESS THAN MAXMIMUM COINS!! There is a story circulating that a lady hit the “Megabucks” when the jackpot was 20 million but because she only had one coin in she collected only $5,000. While this is an Urban Legend, there are other cases of people losing out on progressive jackpots because of short coin play.

All of the slot machines have the information you need posted on the front. Before you sit down to play, take a minute to “Read” the machine. This will make you a knowledgeable player and help you determine which machine is best suited for you.

VIDEO POKER: Tips for Playing 8/5 Bonus Poker

Have you been to a casino lately? If so, then you’ve already noticed that there are enough video poker game choices to make your head spin. That is why the best time to choose the game you will play is before you ever leave home. Once you get to the chaotic casino just look for the best version of the game available in the casino and you are on your way. In this column, we highlight why 8/5 Bonus Poker is a good start. Why Bonus Poker (BP)? BP is a good game for beginners as well as long-time players because the strategy is fairly easy and you are sure to find some version at casinos that offer video poker. Even though 9/6 Jacks or Better (JOB) is a popular choice as well, some complain its too boring. That is not so with BP.

Not only do you receive double your wager for two pair, a frequent hand, just like JOB, but you are also rewarded with extra pay every time your winning hand is a “special” four-of-a-kind. (See Table 1.1)

BP Pitfalls: You’ll want to make sure you found a “real” BP game and not a pseudo-bonus poker device. I’ve seen some games calling themselves “bonus poker” that only return even money instead of double your bet for two pair, a frequent hand. Even if the pay is more for both the full-house and the flush you should avoid pay schedules that downgrade two pair. For example, if you find a 10/7 BP you’ll notice it pays even money for two pair. Even though people are fooled into thinking they found an excellent game, in reality the ER is an unplayable 91.1317% (10/7 BP with even money for two pair) instead of 99.1660% for 8/5 BP (double your wager for two pair)--huge difference.

Although the strategy is fairly easy, BP is not always intuitive. This means that using “common sense” may lead to playing errors. For example, frequent mistakes are made by players when they are dealt a full house with three aces and choose to hold just the aces to go for the high-paying four of a kind. A software check will demonstrate the correct play is to hold all cards just like JOB. That’s why my strategy tips, below, will be helpful during casino play.

Table 1.1: Pay Schedules for Bonus Poker

YOU’LL WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU FOUND A ”REAL” BP GAME AND NOT A PSEUDO-BONUS POKER DEVICE.

Strategy Tips: 8/5 BP

1. Dealt no pairs, hold just the high cards. (If you’re dealt three high cards and one is the ace, then hold all but the ace.)

2. Dealt a low pair, hold the non-paying pair. (Exceptions are hold 3 to a royal flush--first choice; hold 4 to a flush--second choice.)

3. Dealt a paying pair, hold both cards. (Exceptions are hold 4 to a royal flush or 4 to a straight flush.)

4. Dealt two pairs, hold both pairs. (No exceptions.)

5. Dealt three of a kind, hold all three. (No exceptions.)

6. Dealt four to an inside straight, hold no cards. (The exception is to hold the four cards if there are either three or four high cards.)

7. Dealt four to a flush, hold all cards. (Exception is hold three to a royal flush.)

8. Dealt a straight, hold all cards. (Exception is hold four to a royal flush.)

9. Dealt a flush, hold all cards. (Exception is hold four to a royal flush.)

10. Dealt a full house, four of a kind, a straight flush, or a royal flush, hold all cards. (No exceptions.)

Final Thoughts: 8/5 BP is a great game choice for both seasoned players and beginners. Just be sure you select a decent version, like 8/5 BP, and that you know the basic playing strategy.
