A HIGH-STAKES PAST: THE EVOLUTION OF GAMBLING IN AMERICA
Gambling has been part of human civilization for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and China. Dice have been found in Egyptian tombs, and early versions of poker were played in Persia long before America was even a thought. Whether rolling bones in Rome or betting on chariot races, gambling has always been a part of human nature. So, it’s no surprise that when European settlers arrived in America, they brought their love for games of chance with them.
Betting in the New World
Before settlers even stepped foot in America, gambling had long been a part of Native American culture. Tribes across the continent engaged in betting games, often tied to rituals and social gatherings. Some
of their games resembled modernday lacrosse, with spectators placing wagers on the outcomes. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in the 1500s and 1600s, England’s upper class indulged in sophisticated parlor games, many of which made their way to the New World.
But gambling in the American colonies was met with mixed reactions. Puritan settlers in New England saw it as immoral and worked to suppress it. Despite their efforts, gambling persisted. In fact, early American governments used lotteries to fund public projects—a practice that continues today with state-run lotteries bringing in billions annually.
The Rise of Riverboat Gambling
As America grew, so did its appetite for gambling. By the early 1800s, gambling became a staple of frontier life, particularly along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. New Orleans emerged as the nation’s first gambling capital, thanks to its bustling ports and a culture influenced by French settlers. America’s first casino opened there in 1822, operating around the clock with table games, roulette, fine dining, and alcohol.
When anti-gambling laws started cracking down on land-based gaming houses, gambling found a new home—on riverboats. These floating casinos thrived, giving birth to the romanticized image of the professional riverboat gambler. But as railroads replaced riverboats as the

dominant mode of transportation, the golden age of river gambling began to fade.
The Gold Rush & Wild West Wagers
The discovery of gold in California in 1849 sparked a rush of fortune seekers, and with them came a new era of gambling. From Kansas City to Denver to San Francisco, saloons and gaming halls became social hubs where miners and cowboys tested their luck at poker, Faro, and Three-Card Monte. The Wild West’s reputation for high-stakes games— and high tempers—often led to brawls, shootouts, and legends that Hollywood still loves to tell. San Francisco quickly overtook New Orleans as the country’s gambling hotspot. By the mid1800s, the city boasted over 100 saloons, each offering gaming tables and live entertainment. In 1895, a revolutionary invention changed the gambling world forever: the first slot machine, developed in San Francisco. Today, slots generate the majority of casino revenues worldwide.
The Crackdown & the Rise of Organized Crime
As gambling flourished, so did opposition to it. By the late 1800s, states began cracking down, banning most forms of betting. Nevada, once a gambling-friendly state, outlawed it in 1910. The prohibition of alcohol in 1919 further pushed gambling underground, creating lucrative opportunities for organized crime. Figures like Al Capone capitalized on both illegal booze and betting, setting up underground gambling dens across the country.
Some towns, like French Lick, Indiana, and Hot Springs, Arkansas, became
havens for illegal gambling, where authorities were paid to look the other way. But the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression changed everything. Desperate for revenue, states reconsidered their stance, legalizing certain forms of gambling, such as horse racing, to generate funds. By 1931, Nevada re-legalized casino gambling, setting the stage for what would become the modern gaming industry.
Stay tuned to future issues of Southern & Midwest Gaming for an expanded view of the evolution of gambling through the modern day era.

THE TRIPLE CROWN TROPHIES
THOROUGHBRED HORSE RACING’S “HOLY GRAILS”
When it comes to Thoroughbred Horse Racing, there isn’t a fan alive who hasn’t dreamed of hoisting the “hardware” that is awarded to the winner of either the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes or Belmont Stakes. The reason being is that rather than just another chunk of chiseled metal that ultimately becomes a gaudy paper weight, the Triple Crown Trophies are truly mythical in nature. In fact, there are those individuals who have literally parted with all their Earthly possessions just to purchase a horse that would need a “loaves and fishes” miracle just to qualify for the Triple Crown Series (and thus plunder part of its riches).
by ERIC FLOYD
KENTUCKY DERBY
Everyone knows of course that the Kentucky Derby is far and away the most coveted horse race under Heaven. Yet only a sparce few are enlightened regarding the spoils that are attached to this 10-furlong (1 ¼ mile) flight into eternity. Now though a mixed bag of first place cups and plaques were sporadically awarded from 1875 to 1923, the present-day Kentucky Derby Trophy made its grand debut behind the 1924 (50th anniversary) “Run for the Roses”. Correspondingly, this “Golden Jubilee Cup” (as some famously call it) is the only solid gold trophy that is annually awarded to the winner of a major American sporting event.
The 2024 Belmont Stakes winning connections with the coveted August Belmont Trophy. - Photo courtesy of NYRA/Adam Coglianese
The Kentucky Derby Trophy is the most coveted award in sports.
Approximately 22 inches tall (excluding its jade base) and weighing 56 ounces, the Kentucky Derby Trophy is topped with an 18kt gold horse and jockey. Festooned with horseshoe shaped handles and a forwardfacing horseshoe (with its ends superstitiously turned skyward) this incomparable turf trinket is worth well over six figures in raw material alone! In commemoration of 2024’s 150th running of the Kentucky Derby, the “Golden Jubilee Cup’s” topside equine was appropriately outfitted with a garland of roses comprised of 196 rubies, 96 marquise emeralds and 36 round emeralds.
PREAKNESS STAKES
As extraordinary as the Kentucky Derby Trophy is, there is a keepsake attached to the Triple Crown Series that is quite literally priceless. Presented to the winning owner(s) after the dust from the Preakness Stakes settles, the Woodlawn Vase has been appropriately christened, “The most valuable trophy in American sports”.
Fashioned by Tiffany & Co. in 1860, the sterling silver Woodlawn Vase was literally buried underground during the American Civil War so that it wouldn’t be melted down and turned into shot! Now as the old saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words”, yet with that said, here goes my best attempt at painting a mental image that does our topic justice. Exactly 36 inches tall and weighing 400 ounces, the Woodlawn Vase’s circular base features four projections (pointing north, south, east and west) each of which is faced with a horseshoe. On the top of each projection is a racing saddle, whip, and jockey cap. Atop the base is a lawn that is partitioned
by a rickety old country fence. One field houses a stallion while the other field provides sanctuary for a mare and a foal. Above this field is a sort of bulletin on which the rules for the Preakness Stakes are distinctly engraved.
The centerpiece of the Woodlawn Vase is a 14-inch diameter bowl which showcases four shields. One shield is engraved with a picture of a racehorse, another displays a representation of Woodlawn Racecourse (an oval that was established in 1859 on the east side of Louisville), another is left blank for a portrait of the Preakness Champion, and another is likewise left blank for the written history of the Preakness Champion. Separating the shields are four “Figures of Victory” that hold a wreath in either hand. Above the center bowl rests a circular ornament that displays portraits of Woodlawn Racecourse’s eight original “officers”. Finally, a full
figure of the horse “Lexington” (the most successful sire of the late 19th century) mounted by a jockey crowns the Woodlawn Vase. (Note: the winning owner(s) of the Preakness Stakes receives a replica of the Woodlawn Vase, not the vase itself.)
BELMONT STAKES
Because the Belmont Stakes has become my favorite horserace, there isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t dream of fondly caressing the trophy that is synonymous with the Triple Crown Series’ most ancient leg. Named after August Belmont Sr., a famous financier and politician who helped establish Jerome Park Racetrack (the birthplace of the Belmont Stakes), the August Belmont Memorial Cup is especially coveted by those who exponentially esteem the Sport of Kings’ four-legged founding fathers. (You’ll see what I mean in a minute.)
Another invaluable treasure crafted by Tiffany & Co.; the August Belmont Memorial Cup is basically a 27-inch high, 350-ounce sterling silver acorn-shaped bowl that is pedestaled by Thoroughbred Horse Racing’s three “Foundational Sires”. Known as Herod, Matchum and Eclipse, at least one of these heralded equines live on in the lineage of every single solitary thoroughbred racehorse that has ever graced an American oval! Forever abiding atop the August
The Preakness Stakes awards the Woodlawn Vase to the winner of the race.
Belmont Memorial Cup is the likeness of Fenian, a racer owned by August Belmont Sr. who captured the third running of the Belmont Stakes in 1869. (Similar to the protocol used in the Preakness, the Belmont’s winning owner(s) only receive a replica of the August Belmont Memorial Cup.)
Since the inception of the Triple Crown Series, only thirteen thoroughbreds have managed to sweep all three legs. They are: Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle
Slew (1977), Affirmed (1978), American Pharoah (2015) and Justify (2018). Desiring that these magnates receive an exclusive memento for their rarefied achievement, the Thoroughbred Racing Association hence commissioned Cartier Jewelry Co. to fashion the “Triple Crown Trophy”. The result was a threesided sterling silver vase with each individual side exhibiting specific information pertaining to the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. Following American Pharoah’s Triple Crown triumph in 2015, the Triple Crown Trophy was redesigned into a 36-inch-tall, 50 lb. three-sided
cup that is complete with handles, a center axis crown and a bronze mounted horse.
It is my sincere hope that the preceding article has lent you a new perspective concerning just how special Thoroughbred Horse Racing’s Triple Crown Trophies truly are. Now in comparison, many are familiar with the NFL’s Vince Lombardi Trophy, the NBA’s Larry O’ Brian Trophy and the NHL’s Stanley Cup. All the same, for the turf enthusiast, these awards aren’t even in the same league as those bedazzled remembrances that are exclusively reserved for the Sport of Kings’ equine immortals!

POKER: Playing Small Pairs
Small Pairs with Good Flops
When you have a 4-4 in a pot, flops like J-J-3 or 10-10-2 or 9-9-3 are good for your hand; there is in fact an excellent chance that your two pair is the best hand at the table at this point. So put in some bets and raises, for two reasons: first, to find out if you do have the best hand; second, to protect your hand. When you face mixed overcards like J-10-3, you’re in trouble, but when a big pair lands on the flop, it’s much less likely that someone holds the key card. For example, in the J-J-3 flop, there are only two jacks left in the deck; had the flop come J-10-3 flop, your pocket fours are the best hand unless someone has a higher pair or one of the two remaining jacks (both are unlikely).
Protecting Your Hand
Assume that you have 6-6 in the small blind, the third position has raised before the flop, the fifth position has called the raise, and now the flop comes down 2-4-5.
Now it’s your turn to act. You bet out, and the third position calls the bet. Now the fifth position makes it two bets, so you reraise (making it three bets) in order to protect your hand. This is a great flop for your hand, and you need to reraise in order to get rid of the original raiser. At this point, the only hands that can beat you are over pairs, and in any case, you have a straight draw to go with your hand. Maybe the original raiser has K-Q and your reraise forces him to fold his hand. If you don’t drive him out, you may lose the pot to him by allowing him to call just one more bet in the hope of catching a king or a queen.
Suppose you’re taking the approach where you just call the two bets before the flop, and the big blind calls. Now it’s your turn to act. Because you haven’t shown too much strength before the flop, you might want to try checking with your now powerful hand, and then raising when someone else bets out into you. Sometimes the “check-raise” plays can help you eliminate your opponents and therefore help you protect your hand. But betting out into the flop works well also. In either case, you want to “ram and jam” (raise and reraise) your hand with this flop in order to protect it.
Small Pairs with Terrible Flops
Some flops are so bad for small pairs that you should just run for cover, no matter whether you’ve just called two bets before the flop or made it three bets. If the flop comes down Q-K-A, it’s time to fold as soon as possible! Of course, if I had been using my three-bet approach I would bet on the flop when it was my turn, on the off chance that all of my opponents might fold their hands, giving me the pot right there. It could also happen that I get called on the flop and then hit my set card on either fourth street or the river. Such things are possible. But I would not call a bet on this flop; I would not call a bet on the turn; I would not call a bet on the river; I would not bet on either fourth street or the river. All I would do in this case is make that one bet on the flop when it’s my turn to bet.
Flopping a Set
You have 2-2 on the button, the second position raises, and then the fourth position calls the two bets. You play in my style and make it three bets to go, everyone calls, and the flop comes down 2-4-J. You have flopped a set! You should put in as many raises as you can, both to build the pot and to protect your hand.
If you’ve used the other approach and just called before the slop with your 2-2, and then get your 2-4-J flop, nothing changes in your postflop approach. You still put in as many bets and raises as you can in order to build a pot and protect your hand. No matter how you play your small pair before the flop, when you hit a set it’s time to “ram and jam” (raise and reraise). Sets usually win or lose (a majority of the time sets win) pretty good-sized pots.

HORSERACING: Honing the Handicapping Eye
I want to offer a fair warning to the horse player who yearns to accumulate a consistent amount of greenbacks by playing the ponies. Expect to put in a substantial amount of labor if you want the positive sessions to outnumber the negative ones.
The player who initially wanders into the world of horse racing and opens up the racing form usually gasps at the amount of information contained within its pages. It would be much less complicated to simply play a lucky number instead of learning to decipher race conditions, running lines, speed figures, workout times and the pace scenario for the upcoming contest. It is possible to turn a short term profit by playing hunches or grandpa’s birthday, but learning what all the numbers and symbols represent in the form will be one of the keys to avoiding eventual bankruptcy.
It takes years to become fluent in this equine language and the complexities do not end there. Everyone in the grandstand knows the colt breaking from the inner rail in a few minutes has won his last three races at this same level and distance. Eager for an easy score, novice players will not realize the pitfall that looms ahead.
Through years of reading books and talking to trainers I have derived a list of guidelines that make up a sound looking race horse. I state forwardly that all runners are different. Some thoroughbreds that look spectacular in the post parade often bring up the rear while on other occasions I have witnessed equines with a dull coat and exposed ribs wire the field by seven lengths. Use these guidelines to assist in formulating personal opinions. Enough studying and you may someday earn the label of “Horse Whisperer”!
1. A thoroughbred that is feeling good has their ears pricked. They stand straight up in the air like antennas, listening to all that surrounds them. A runner with their ears laid back flat is usually not in the mood to duke it out with the competition.
2. Most thoroughbreds will swish their tail up and down when they are in the mood to race.
3. Unless it is an unusually hot day, sweat on a racehorse’s neck, kidney area and loins spells doom. Excess perspiration tips that the animal is wound up and nervous. Precious racing energy will be left in the post parade and starting gate.
A THOROUGHBRED THAT IS FEELING GOOD HAS THEIR EARS PRICKED UP IN THE AIR.
Between the time of his last photo in the winner’s circle and this moment, the equine we are banking on might have come down with the flu, bowed a tendon after a workout or cracked a hoof stepping on a pebble inside his stall. A thoroughbred is a fragile creature made up of flesh and bone. From time to time they will undoubtedly suffer ailments from the rigors of racing. The ability to judge a racehorse’s appearance in the post parade is the remaining element in attaining lasting success as a handicapper.
I can honestly say that assessing a thoroughbred’s physical soundness is where plenty of serious players including myself encounter definite vulnerability. This art is truly mastered by few over the course of a lifetime so don’t expect to pick it up overnight. Some just have an eye for judging horseflesh naturally; it is a gift from above. For others, it is like a muscle that needs to be exercised and conditioned through repetition. Regardless of where your natural ability originally lies, practice combined with patience will assure an increase of profitable visits to the mutual window.
4. A fit thoroughbred will have a shiny, glossy coat covered in dapples. These markings look like rounded spots or patches with a color shade different from their background.
5. A horse trying to thrust its head in front of their lead pony in a post parade is dying to compete.
6. Beware of any fractiousness, chomping at the bit, stomping of feet or jerking motions while a horse is warming up. Any of these behaviors indicate physical distress with the beast.
7. A horse showing up with front leg bandages for the FIRST time is usually a bad sign. Their tendons are probably sore.
8. If a horse displays a positive controlled energy then rushes the starting gate when they get near it, run to the windows and empty your wallet.
Becoming versed in form handicapping and equine body language takes a tremendous amount of effort. The reward comes when you truly figure out a race winner through your own personal formulas and convictions. Within that one moment of time, you will have truly conquered the races!
Q&A WITH JOHN G.: A Slot Potpourri
SEE IF YOU CAN PROVIDE THE ANSWERS TO THIS COLLECTION OF SLOT ETIQUETTE, LORE AND TRIVIA:
1. A coin cup atop the video screen or reel window of a slant-top slot machine means:
A) The machine is out of order
B) The machine is occupied by a player taking a break
C) The machine is out of coins and needs a hopper fill
ANSWER: 1. B. A coin cup left at a slot machine is occupied by a player taking a break. Other signals used by players include leaving jackets or sweaters on chairs or stools by the machines, or leaving drinks or cigarettes on the machines themselves. I’ve seen players leave personal belongings, including wallets and purses, on machines. That, of course, is unwise, and an invitation to theft. It’s okay to take breaks during play and expect your machine to be waiting for you when you get back. Just be sure the breaks are of reasonable length such as a bathroom or drink break. Saving the machine while you go play a different game for a while or take a nap is not reasonable.
2. Playing more than one machine at a time:
A) Narrows the house edge
B) Ensures the player of finding at least one loose machine
C) Costs the player more money in the long run
ANSWER: 2. C. Playing more than one machine costs the player more money in the long run. Many players think that, of two machines placed side-by-side, one is bound to be hot. That is not necessarily the case- and even if it were, playing two machines would still lead to bigger long-term losses than playing one. That’s because even on “loose” machines the casino has an edge. Not only that, but a customer can play each of two machines nearly as fast as playing just one by pushing one machine’s buttons while reels are spinning on the other. That doubles the risk. Let’s say I’ve found two two-coin $1 machines sitting side by side. By chance, I’ve hit it lucky-one of my machines is a 98 percent payback slot; the other returns an average of 95 percent in the long

run. If I just play the 95 percenter for an hour at 500 spins per hour, I risk $1,000 and on the average lose $50. But let’s say I play both machines at a slightly slower 400 spins per hour instead. Now on the 95 percenter I risk $800 and on the average lose $40. On the 98 percenter I risk $800 and lose $16. My total losses rise to $56 per hour-more than if you’d just stayed with the weaker machine. And that’s if I hit it lucky and hit upon a high-paying machine. What if I’ve found two average machines? Now I’ve doubled my risk without increasing the rewards on either. What if one of them is an ice-cold 85 percenter? Ouch!
3. Jackpots are paid by hand:
A) When they’re over $500
B) When they’re over $1,000
C) When they’re too big for the coin capacity of the hopper
ANSWER: 3. C. Jackpots are paid by hand when they are too big for the capacity of the hopper. On both quarter and nickel machines, I’ve had the hopper spit out as many as 2,000 coins. On the other hand, on dollar machines with their larger tokens taking up more hopper space, I’ve hand pays as small as $400. We tend to think of hand-paid jackpots as being large sums, the kind of hits that will guarantee us coming home with a profit. But I’ve had hand-pays of less than $20 on some of the new 100-coin penny slots. Of course, $20 amounts to 2,000 pennies, a bit much for the machine to process. In addition, really big wins are paid by hand, regardless of hopper capacity. The IRS requires the casino to have the player sign form W2-G before paying one-spin winnings of $1,200 or more.
4. Casinos usually place their highest-paying machines:
A) Near table games
B) At the end of rows
C) Near the elevators
D) None of the above
ANSWER: 4. D. Neither table games, at the ends of rows or near the elevators are places you’re particularly likely to find high-paying slots. A casino slot director once told me that particular myth is so widespread that he had taken to placing weak-playing machines at the ends of rows. In his outstanding book of Break the One-Armed Bandits, Frank Scoblete interviewed a casino executive he called “Mr. Handle” on placement of slots. Mr. Handle told Frank to look for machines that were highly visible, that players could see from a variety of angles. Then everyone would be sure to see the fellow players winning, and perhaps would take up positions at lower-paying machines. Shortly after the book came out, I was walking through Circus Circus, on a wide walkway leading from one gaming area to another. There I saw it. The machine that was visible from every angle, the one that everyone who passed through this walkway would see, regardless of what direction they were walking. I had two quarters in my pocket-not enough for a fair test at all. I dropped them in the slot. Bam! Triple Bar! Triple Bar! Triple Bar! One hundred and sixty quarters came pouring into the tray. Evidence of a winning formula? No, this was nowhere near a serious test. It was just random chance, a one-time freak pull. But I gave Frank a hearty “Thanks!” the next time I saw him.
