WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER
Hello Riders,
The 2018 riding season is kicking off with the famous Daytona Beach Bike Week and it should be a huge event. From all indications, this year should be a great year for riders and events we love to attend. More men and women are donning their riding attire and learning to ride on two wheels. It’s awesome to see the excitement in their eyes as they ride along with their favorite friends for the first time.
Leesburg Bikefest & Thunder Beach rallies and the organizers are going all out to make sure you enjoy their events to the fullest. Florida is the first state that warms up and attracts riders from all over the country and the world. Meet new friends with other riders like we have done; Danilo & Bibi, Bernd & Suzi, Paul & Vicki Diamond, Paul & Sam Buca, Fredrick & Anu Kamis and others from around the globe! We’ve become great friends and stay in touch over the years. Get your bike spit-shined and customized as there are bike shows all over the southeast and we continue to be amazed at the diversity in the motorcycle entries. the LEDs, the accessories and of course…the CHROME! Each bike is a personal expression of their owner and wow, do some of them have an amazing way of expressing themselves.
At Daytona’s Bike Week this month, you will find every kind of bike show you can imagine. You can test drive 2018 motorcycles for fit and performance. Headline music acts will be playing daily and you’ll have to pick the ones you can make it to. Motorcycle racing is happening with AMA Supercross, Daytona 200 Sportbike race, Daytona TT Flat Track Races, Vintage Motorcycle Races with Billy Lane and more. There’s so much to do you won’t be able to do it all (but give a try). You might catch us at the Legendary Boot Hill Saloon; just look for the Southern Biker Road Crew shirts. Our favorite pastime is enjoying great food at our favorites like Aunt Catfishes, Finn’s, Charlie Horse or Racings North Turn. We bring the SBMag Road Crew with us when we go to these restaurants because everyone knows we like to eat and have a great time. Hope to see you out on the road…on the Florida Coast! The EV Harley-Davidson Announces It’s Going Green By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
B
ack in the July 2014 issue of Southern Biker Magazine, I wrote about Harley’s desire to come out with an all-electrical, battery powered motorcycle; the LiveWire Project. Nearly four years after that article ran, Harley-Davidson announced it is indeed coming out with its first electric motorcycle. “The EV motorcycle market is in its infancy today, but we believe premium Harley-Davidson electric motorcycles will help drive excitement and participation in the sport globally. As we expand our EV capabilities and commitment, we get even more excited about the role electric motorcycles will play in growing our business”, said H-D Chief Executive Matt Levatich said in January. “You’ve heard us talk about Project LiveWire,” he added. “LiveWire is an exhilarating, no excuses, electric Harley-Davidson. Over 12,000 riders told us so through the demo rides we provided around the world and it’s an active project we’re preparing to bring to market within 18 months.” The EV prototype has very fast acceleration and super silent (not like a normal Harley-Davidson model). You may have caught a glimpse of it in the Avenger’s movie, Age of Ultron when
8 - Southern Biker Magazine
Black Widow dropped out of the Harrier jet in route to catch-up to the bad guys; 0 to 60mph in just 4-seconds is superhero quick. The new H-D EV model will have to compete with electric motorcycles already on the market being produced by Zero Motorcycles, Alta Motors, BMW and Energica, among others. That’s not to include the one that are coming like Yamaha who are preparing one for the market. Zero Motorcycles offers its Zero S starting around $11,000 and it has a range of up to 223 miles. Harley’s new entry will have to compete with what is already on the market so expect the market to grow as soon as it hits the showrooms before 2020. (It could be a great Christmas present if it’s a late 2019 introduction.) Electric vehicles are already here with Tesla being in the forefront of all manufactures with technology, speed and distance. Most every other automotive manufacturer has some type of electric vehicle, but all are putting more money into this direction. Automobiles have a way of hiding the batteries and their weight, but motorcycles have a limited space to store batteries. As technology changes, so will the size of those battery
components as well as their strength. The overall motorcycle market in sales are recovering in the US since the financial crisis, but not to the tune when back in 2016 motorcycle sales reached 1.6 million sold. The industry is looking to attract new riders with new advanced models. This will definitely open up a new market for the iconic brand as it looks to boost sales and adapt to changing technologies.

Safe & Effective
Helmet Removal System By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
S
erious motorcycle crashes deserve serious medical attention. In the case of where the helmet needs to come off, in the past there have been only a couple things to do; carefully pull it off or cut it off. The major issues when removing the helmet are not causing further trauma to the neck and cervical spine and possibly causing further serious debilitating and permanent damage. We are well aware of the dangers of motorcycle riding and “WHEN” your accident occurs. My wife and I were involved in a car vs. motorcycle crash several years ago and she ended up with head trauma. First responders, emergency medical technicians and paramedics are given training on how to remove a helmet so that further injury is minimal. Full face or 3/4 helmets are the ones that pose the most protection, but also yield the most difficult to remove in an accident. It may require two or more responders depending on the severity of the accident. Time is critical in these type of accidents to assess injuries.
Technology has finally caught up with the motorcycle rider and safety is leading the way; introducing the Simpson Shock Doctor Eject Helmet Removal System. Simpson bought the technology back in 2013 and has perfected their unit today. The system works by installation of a small inflatable flat-folded bladder in the crown of the helmet under the comfort liner in contact with the EPS impact absorbing material. Inflation is accomplished by attaching a bulb, such as the type on a blood pressure cuff (not supplied with the device as delivered), to a small flexible tube that runs from the bladder to the exterior of the left side of the helmet. As the bladder inflates, it pushes the helmet straight off the wearer’s head from the inside, reducing the amount of pulling force applied by the rescuers to the exterior of the helmet, reducing the possibility of unwanted head and neck movement that could worsen a neck injury. Two rescuers should still be involved to help stabilize the head and neck during the procedure, but reduction or elimination of the use of external pulling force or unintended rotational force on the helmet can reduce the potential for additional
10 - Southern Biker Magazine
twisting or pulling force being applied to the neck, even with a second rescuer trying to immobilize the head and neck. Installation is virtually simple to do and doesn’t interfere with the comfort of the helmet. By placing the small bright yellow “Eject equipped” sticker on the left lower edge of the helmet near the connector allows the rescuers to know the device is installed. This device is recommended or mandatory in AMA Supercross, Motocross and other motorcycle competitions. It’s also mandatory for NHRA Pro & Nitro Classes, Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car as well as all NASCAR drivers. Retail price of the Simpson Shock Doctor Eject Helmet Removal System is $59.95. But the benefits, if and when you need it—are priceless. See more of this system at: www.simpsonraceproducts.com.

tate Supreme Court rules in favor of Buffalo Chip City: the 2015 vote to make the Buffalo Chip Campground and surrounding area a city was valid. The ruling reverses a circuit court finding that some of those voting for incorporation did not live at listed addresses and that the vote was invalid. Campground CEO Rod Woodruff and Meade County commissioners believe the city status will improve economic conditions at Buffalo Chip. The campground has evolved over the years into a mecca of motorcyclists attending the annual Sturgis rally. Chemists at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada have announced a breakthrough that could boost battery performance for electric vehicles and motorcycles, according to a report at www.sciencedaily.com. The Waterloo team says the use of negative electrodes made of lithium metal holds the potential to dramatically increase battery storage capacity, which could triple the distance electric vehicles are able to travel on a single charge.
Honda unveiled removable battery packs for its electric two: The Honda PCX electric scooter was unveiled in October with two removable batteries under the seat. Now, Honda says those Mobile Power Packs can be shared with other machines. Honda uses the same batteries to power ATVs, an autonomous four-wheeled buggy and the PCX Electric scooter. All the vehicles use various numbers of the same battery pack.
Harley-Davidson has signed on as a “Lifetime Sponsor” of GreenZone Hero and became the exclusive motorcycle sponsor of GreenZone Hero. The GreenZone Hero mission is to recognize businesses that honor the country’s veterans. Harley-Davidson will be listed on the GreenZone Hero Founders page and each Harley-Davidson dealership will have the opportunity to have its own page on the GreenZone Hero website. Suzuki Motor Corp. has decided to suspend its FIM World MXGP Championship and All Japan Motocross activities beginning in 2018. The company said it reviewed its
motorcycle operations and decided to “focus on the core business functions and restructuring of our motorcycle business,” which includes suspending MXGP activities. Suzuki will continue to produce RMZ250 and 450 series and support those customers around the world. “The company will continue to provide valued products for its customers by utilizing the experiences earned through the racing activities,” a Suzuki release states.
The electric scooter and motorcycle market is expected to reach $55 billion by 2024. According to a report from Global Market Insights Inc., the report cites increased mobility for short distances, reduced carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions and the actions of regulatory agencies in several countries as factors in the market expansion. The electric scooter and motorcycle markets include both commercial and personal use cases. Logistics companies can use these products for their small delivery requirements. Food and beverage delivery sector is an attractive segment for this industry. The rental business also presents growth potential in the coming years, the report states.

Taking it to the Roads Roads and riding go together like peanut butter and jelly. Let’s face it, you can’t ride without a road and roads come in all sorts of conditions. Interstates, back roads, windy roads, gravel roads, sandy roads, wet roads, roads under construction, you get the picture. It’s important when riding to be able to deal with all different types of road conditions.
Great Bikes & Hardcore
Micro Wrestling By Christine Perry
I
f you have never been to a Micro Wrestling Event, you are missing out. Bootlegger H-D brought together motorcycles, good food, and great entertainment; what else do you need on a Saturday night. The showroom floor was packed, as well as the standing only spots on the second and third floor. Not surprising with about 600 people in attendance. Your belly was taken care of by Rooster’s Bar and Grill, the Southern Sisters Mobile Café and Knox Dough took care of your sweet tooth! But the main course was the Micro Wrestlers. Trash talking between the wrestlers and the crowd didn’t stop all night even when the wrestlers were flying out of the ring into the laps of spectators. Everything within reach was used as a prop to defeat their opponent. I personally was most impressed by the utilization of cookies sheets (who would have guessed), “caution – wet floor” signs and a small 3ft ladder. The lady ref was given a “wedgie” surprise by one of the wrestlers (by the look on her face, I don’t think this was part of the show). The audience was all in on the matches but it was hard to just root for one of the wrestlers as every one of them grabbed your attention in a different way; Screaming, shouting, name calling, teasing, laughing—all in all a great event—and everyone had an awesome time! I for sure cannot wait for the next time I get to attend a Micro Wrestling Federation Event.
18 - Southern Biker Magazine
I have always encouraged my lady riders not to wait until they were thrust onto a road they weren’t ready for but to prepare. Find a gravel road and practice on or get out in the rain and do some wet road practicing. Get a feel for different road conditions. Here in Florida, we have grated bridges. I would have them practice going over the bridges until they were totally comfortable. Learning how to relax your grip, keep a steady speed as you go over the bridge is important to learn. Accidents happen when something comes up that we aren’t prepared for and practice is the best prevention. If the last quick stop you did was in your motorcycle safety course, it’s time to practice. Find a parking lot and practice swerve maneuvers so you’re ready for obstructions on the road. You want to build in body memory that takes over. Go online and study different road conditions and how to handle. Over-steering, braking too quickly, gripping the handle bars to tightly and riding too fast or too slow can all create problems when you’re dealing with poor road conditions. When you’ve got skills, you’re able to relax and enjoy the road regardless of the conditions. Come on ladies, do your homework. You’ve got some time to do some study before springtime is hear and then it will be time to take it to the roads and practice.
