WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER

Hello Readers and Riders, Hope everything is going well in your world. We are living in crazy times is an understatement. The year 2020 will go down in history as a volatile and troubled year with political unrest, COVID-19 uncertainty and racial and law enforcement tension. If you are a social media user, you are constantly bombarded with the negative actions of others and their ensuing repercussions. National monuments are being destroyed

by a small group and no one is stopping them. Riots and looting have damaged personal business owners' property who have struggled to survive after dealing with devastating COVID-19 affects, causing many to close their doors permanently. Today, I made a choice to stop sharing the negative posts because it can consume your thoughts 24/7. It can drag you down to a dark place and is difficult to escape. Today, I am choosing to find the good and happy things in life and do what makes me happy; one of those things is riding my motorcycle. The good feeling I get from riding my motorcycle through twisty and scenic roads cancels out most of the negativity. Imagine if

the entire country could experience the positive feelings that riding a motorcycle with family and friends provides? Sounds like this country would be in a better place to me. The best thing about riding is the wonderful people we meet along the way. Motorcycle riders never meet a stranger because they already have a connection with bikes; it’s like friends we haven’t met yet. The comradery is special and unsurpassed in the motorcycle world and it’s something everyone should experience just once in their life. Keep Your Knees in the Breeze©

EVENTS ARE ON AS COVID RETREATS! By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

A

fter Daytona Bike Week and 250-300,000 motorcycle enthusiasts enjoy a huge beach party, the COVID scare is retreating. The news we were given up front and “possible stats” were not even in the same galaxy. Businesses who survived the shut-downs are beginning to open and events around the country are beginning to verify they are going forward and some are making a new date to open. JuneBug Boogie in Cookeville, Tennessee was one of the first to open and the from all indications, it was a complete record-breaking crowd over 2,000 who came to break out and break loose. Expectations are just that for other events coming this year. Riders around the country are ready to go and attend their favorite event and get out of the house! These are just a few events that are ready to go: July 21-25

Sporting motorcycle events have returned or have planned their return as well including Supercross, MotoAmerica Superbike racing, NHRA & AHDRA motorcycle drag racing, AMA motorcycle racing events and more. Due to the Indy 500 changing its dates to August 23, MotoAmerica rescheduled its Superbikes at the Brickyard for October 9-11. Shutting down or postponing events do not just hurt the event involved, it also hurts the surrounding businesses around the event that depend on that income to survive. Those same business employees have no income and it negatively affects them even more. Motorcycle ride benefactors are also hurt as ride events were canceled or postponed with possibly less of a turnout. Make sure to jump back out there and enjoy yourself like never before and support these events and those surrounding businesses. This COVID-19 Chinese Kung-Flu virus is in serious retreat and the liberal media is trying their best to come up with something else. DON’T LET THAT HAPPEN! President Trump and his staff have been moving forward for America and American citizens. In the meantime, help those that have it worse than you. Aide those elderly who really need help especially those that are in real need. Ride when you can and ride safe. The prescription from Dr. Gracy is still the same… ride and ride with friends, still enjoy each other’s company and be knowledgeable of what is the best way to be able to keep living your life well.

DEPLOY. RETURN. RECONNECT.

ReConnect

ver wonder where the service men and women and their families go when they return from long deployments? Ever think about if they can even afford it? Well, Ryan Charrier, founder and President of Operation ReConnect, thought of just these simple ideas while on his first deployment to Afghanistan in 2014. Ryan states, “A fellow service member brought to my attention that he and his family had never been on a true family vacation. With that information, I brought in a network of incredible people from Coastal Alabama and together we provided this family a free vacation to the Gulf Coast. At that moment, I realized it was my responsibility to take on the much neglected opportunity to help ALL Combat Veterans returning from a deployed environment. Operation ReConnect was born. Our Mission: To provide the ‘GIFT OF TIME’ to the men, women and their families who have dealt with the difficulties from an overseas Combat Deployment. I am honored to serve those who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice so we may all enjoy FREEDOM.” This nonprofit organization is unique and has one goal to attain; help deserving veterans and their families to reconnect when they return with expenses paid. They provided Post 9/11 Combat Veterans and their families with a full 7-night of uninterrupted time together in a resort environment, typically located in Coastal Alabama or Northwest Florida.

I’m just not sure about you but I had never thought of anything like this, but it makes perfect, great sense. They raise funds through the corporate donation arena and raffle off vehicles to raise funds to accomplish their goals. This year, they will be raffling off their Special Project, aka ‘RED’ (Remember Everyone Deployed), 2019 Corvette Grand Sport. The drawings OPRC will draw at random and determine winning ticket under the supervision of independent thirdparties. Drawings will be held on or before November 11, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. at The Flora-Bama Lounge, Package & Oyster Bar in Pensacola, FL. Ryan continued, “When we say, “We The People”, we mean it! This project is only possible because so many selfless people contribute and support the Mission of Operation ReConnect. We would like to give mention to those who dedicated their time and resources to our 2020 Special Project - RED: W-K Family of Dealerships, MO, Rough Country, Dyersburg, TN, Flora-Bama, Pensacola, FL, Custom Truck Accessory, Foley, AL, Alabama Glass Works, Inc., Orange Beach, AL, Renaissance Fabrication, Pensacola, FL, MAXJEEPS, Mexico, MI, HercuLED, Hudson, FL.” Operation ReConnect is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded, operated and managed by current and former service-members of the United States Armed Forces. From the U.S. Air Force to the U.S. Army, Operation ReConnect is deeply rooted in service to our great nation. WHAT MADE

HARLEY-DAVIDSON’S

VR1000 SO From AMA Motorcycle Association

COOL

O

ne of the most memorable Superbikes to ever take part in AMA road races has to be the Harley-Davidson VR1000, which the company unleashed on the high banks of Daytona in 1994.

1994 Daytona 200, where Harley faced the fastest Superbikes on the planet. The VR1000 was a radical departure for Harley, which was known for slower revving, high-torque push-rod motors in its street bikes and its XR750 dirt trackers.

It’s memorable, not just for its unique paint job and new engine, but also for the racers who rode it, including future AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers Miguel Duhamel, Chris Carr and Scott Russell.

The VR1000 61-cubic-inch (1,000cc) V-twin engine featured dual overhead cams, water cooling and fuel injection, which were all new for Harley. The bike faced off against high-revving Japanese four-cylinder Superbikes and established European racing twins.

Up-and-comer Duhamel was in the saddle during the bike’s debut at the

At its first race at Daytona, Duhamel started 68th on the grid and moved up

to 20th. The bike went more than 78 miles before the counter-balancer came apart. Later that season, Duhamel finishing third at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course AMA Superbike race. Initially the bike had horsepower and handling comparable to its competition, but the bike’s development didn’t keep pace with the competition. The VR project was canceled in 2001. What Harley-Davidson learned during its time racing the VR1000 translated into tech that made its way onto the street in the form of the dual overheadcam V-Rod that was launched in 2002.

he Milwaukee brand made a patent last October 2019 for a fairing design, and now a sports bike sketch that resembles the design of the patent has appeared. Harley-Davidson could be working on a new sports bike and front bubble fairing resembles their previous VR1000 and the patent designs. After this year’s release of the powerful Bronx 975 Street Fighter, this new sportbike could be paired with a more powerful powerplant version of that motor. Only time will tell.

M

o, you want to be a motorcycle racer? You’ve come to the right place.

AMA-Sanctioned motorcycle racing is the most exciting, accessible, and affordable motorsport in the world. Every weekend at AMA Racing events across America, thousands of racers of all ages and skill levels, ranging from beginners to experts, face off in a number of disciplines on both modern and non-current, or vintage, motorcycles. Getting started is quick and easy. Assuming you have the right bike (and a way to get to the track), you’re almost there.

• First, join the AMA Participants in AMA-Sanctioned competition events must join up. Not only does the AMA provide consistent rules and guidelines that make racing fairer and safer, the AMA Government Relations Department fights for motorcyclists’ rights on the national level, and helps organize and support local battles. There is strength in numbers, and we need everybody to be on board. • Second, download a copy of the 2019 AMA Amateur Competition Rulebook (go to AMA website) In the rule book, you’ll learn which nationally recognized classes you’re eligible to enter and find out how to make your bike legal for competition. Although the vast majority of riders compete in the official AMA classes, AMA-chartered organizers also can advertise and run special classes that have local appeal. Contact the promoters for information about these classes. • Third, if you have a minor racer, you must complete the Annual Minor Release Form (found on the AMA website) Submit the electronic version of the form online or print the form, have it notarized, and mail the original version to the AMA

14 - Southern Biker Magazine

offices. Please note that these forms should be completed at least three (3) weeks before the minor’s racing event to allow time for processing, printing, and shipping of the Annual Minor Release Card. • Fourth, find an event Look up a race near you by searching our online database of AMA-sanctioned racing events. For a closer look at the types of motorcycle racing sanctioned by the AMA, check out the sections of this website dedicated to each type of racing. Motorcycle racing has always been a family sport, and it attracts competitors of all ages. In addition to the fun, kids can learn a lot from getting involved in active competition. Getting serious? Then maybe it’s time to think about sponsorship and getting exposure in local media outlets, such as your hometown newspaper. Like any activity, your experience is helped (or hindered) by your attitude. Approach racing with an open mind, a fun mindset and in a safety-conscious manner, and it will be one of the best moves you’ll ever make! July 2020

Eli Tomac Wins his first 450SX Supercross Title

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

T

he shortened and no-fan Coronavirus 2020 Supercross season has come to an end with Eli Tomac becoming champion and winning his first ever 450SX title. Defending champion Cooper Webb finished second and fan favorite Ken Roczen finished in third. Former Supercross champion Chad Reed in possible his last season finished a disappointing 16th in the final standings. “I just love racing main events. That’s when it’s real. (Tonight) The track was brutal. (But) I think it’s time to go be a good dad”, Reed said.

The 250SX titles went to dual former champions Dylan Ferrandis (West Title) and Chase Sexton (East Title). Ferrandis had to come from behind to capture his title as he was delegated to winning the Last Chance Qualifier just to get into the main, but his cardio proved up to the task.

Tomac, 27, became the oldest rider to win in the 450SX series with an uneventful fifth-place finish in season finale.

We are all looking for Supercross returning with fans in the stands. See you next year!

TIPS FOR RIDING YOUR NEW OR NEW-TO-YOU STREET BIKE From AMA Motorcycle Association

I

t’s pretty exciting getting a new bike, whether it’s a brand-spankin’ new machine from a dealership or a used bike from a private party. But there are a few steps you should take before you ride away after handing over your cash. First, make sure you know where all the controls are, that the fluids are topped off and that you know the proper procedure for starting the bike. It may sound silly, but sometimes the ignition switch may be hard to find. Also, check the electrics. Make sure the headlight and taillight work as well as the turn signals, brake light and horn. If something is wrong then make sure it’s fixed before you go anywhere. Plus, make sure you check the chain tension to be sure it’s correct on a chain-drive machine. It’s also a good idea to take a look at nuts and bolts to be sure everything is tight. How? Tug at the handlebars, footpegs, brake calipers and anything

16 - Southern Biker Magazine

else that is bolted on. Be sure to check to see how much gas is in the tank, and know how to switch the petcock to “on” and “reserve.”

to be sure the brakes are working properly. If you have new pads, remember they will take a little while to bed-in so ride carefully.

Pay special attention to the brake discs. Feel them for any oily residue and if there is any be sure it is cleaned off before you go anywhere. If you find this problem, change the brake pads as well because they are probably contaminated. Ride around slowly

In fact, it’s a good idea to take it easy for a while on a new bike or new-used bike anyway until you get to know the machine. It might be a good idea to take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course on your new bike. July 2020
