WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER
Hello Readers and Riders, Due to the Chinese virus, motorcycle events that were postponed and reset, continue to be canceled. Sturgis will be taking place while this issue hits the street. Laconia, that has been reset three times, is now scheduled for August 2230 right after Sturgis, but it may be canceled as well. The November Lone Star Rally in Texas has already been canceled. Florida’s motorcycle rallies are in a similar situation. Leesburg Bikefest that was postponed until November 13-15, is no longer on the calendar for the Leesburg Partnership site. Biketoberfest is in a kind of holding pattern
awaiting on results of Sturgis and the Florida Governor. As of this printing, Thunder Beach in Panama City Beach is still on as scheduled and looks to be on track to receive riders from all over. We plan on having a HUGE Bike Show for the Best of Thunder Beach, so make your plans! There is an election coming and I hear all kinds of stuff from a vast array of people and business owners. The pandemic has affected everything, and I believe we are at a turning point where are people reaching their breaking point and will not stand for things to continue the way they are. Motorcycle businesses, events and the industry are hurting like all other industries. We have seen 15% of those businesses already go under. It’s time to get businesses back up and running and people back to work. This is a strange world we are living in today and I’m not placing any bets on where it will

“FLYIN’ RYAN” OEHLER
WINS NHRA’S PRO STOCK RACE By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
O
ne of my friends I met back some 10-15 years ago when he was racing AHDRA has won his first Pro Stock NHRA race. Ryan Oehler stopped three-time world champion Matt Smith in the final round of the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals.
“We’ve been hunting for this for a long time,” said Oehler. “This has been my dad’s dream. (He) raced Pro Stock Harleys and Pro Stock cars in the 1970s. We Oehler entered the final round with lane got into motorcycles because it was a little bit choice, left first with a very competitive .010 more our style. We got here, and we just keep light and sealed the win with a 6.974. Smith, who had one of the quickest bikes in the field on working every day. As soon as I did the during qualifying and eliminations, worked his burnout, the bike starts dragging out of the water and we don’t have the right freeplay in way to career final No. 55 with wins against the clutch. When the light dropped I knew it Chris Bostick, Angelle Sampey, and reigning was good. To have it all come together like champ Andrew Hines. Smith narrowly defeated Hines in a great 6.943 to 6.943 side- that; this is for my family and my wife, and my team and for God. I love you all very much.” by-side race in the semifinals. Oehler has made great improvements this year after each race and the teams work proved they are a force to be reckoned with.

TRUMP AND PENCE ARE NO STRANGERS TO MOTORCYCLES
P
resident Donald J. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are no strangers when it comes to motorcycles and the motorcycle industry. Both men do or have ridden motorcycles, and both understand the love folks have making riding a passion. President Trump has met some of the top celebrities and motorcycle industry CEOs. For example, he had the Trump Tower motorcycle built by Paul Teutul, Sr. and his Orange County Choppers crew. Trump told Senior and his team. “100% American made, that’s what I like.” He’s also met old school motorcycle builder Jesse James who produced one of Trumps favorite handguns, a 24-karrat, 45-caliber 1911 with intricate, hand engraving from James’ gun company, Jesse James Firearms Unlimited. President Trump and the Vice President both met with Harley-Davidson executives as the group rode up to the White House lawn and discussed riding and the motorcycle industry.
Vice President Pence is still an active motorcycle rider and loves getting out and putting his Knees in the Breeze™. Though he has several bikes, his main ride is a HarleyDavidson Street Glide. He is very active in riding for charity events as well as for pleasure. When he rides now, there’s just a lot more Secret Service guys riding motorcycles too. He’s an advocate for motorcycle safety and the motorcycle indrusty as whole. Whenever you go to a motorcycle rally, you can always see those infamous Trump biker shirts everywhere. Why do motorcycle riders love Trump so much? Well, I asked several
August 2020
people and the consensus is usually pretty much the same… “Because we finally have someone with some balls in charge!” “At its core, American biker subculture is rooted in the idea of rebellion – against society’s norms and against authority. In Trump, many bikers have found an unlikely idol: a real estate billionaire who nonetheless paints himself as a rebel, outsider and disruptor”, said Randy McBee, an associate professor of history at Texas Tech University and the author of Born to Be Wild: The Rise of the American Motorcyclist. “He’s got this sort of ‘no shit-taking’ kind of attitude that fits in with the image of the biker.” “Bikers for Trump” is a riding group started when Trump needed support, and when in need, bikers are usually the first ones that answer the call. Whatever your view is, President Trump and Vice President Pence are PROMotorcycles. That’s makes them ACES in my book. With all that is going on, our country needs Americans to stand up and take a stand. These two gentlemen are doing just that, but they need our help. Get out and vote in November and make it count!

“T
he Devil Went Down to Georgia” famed fiddler has passed away. His memorial was patriotic and humbling. Charlie Daniels was one of those celebrities that loved America and was a tireless advocate for servicemen and women, policemen and first responders. He will be missed by many of us who loved to hear him sing and those that love country music.
“We will miss GREAT Country Rocker, Charlie Daniels, who passed away yesterday in Hermitage, Tennessee,” U.S. President Donald Trump shared via Twitter. “My condolences to his wife Hazel, and their family. Charlie is in my thoughts and prayers. I love his music.” He also sent a letter to the Daniels family as seen here in this article. Hazel and Charlie Daniels, Jr. responded saying, “Mr. President, we are honored that you would think of us in our time of grieving. Thank you so much, Donald J. Trump.”
At the memorial, Celebrities were a premium. Tracey Lawrence, Darryl Worley, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and many others. Trace Adkins spoke a
heartfelt message about a man he admired most. Mr. Daniels, an honorary Brigadier General in the Tennessee State Guard, was escorted by Mt. Juliet Police and a lot of other Law Enforcement plus a huge contingent of motorcycle riders. At the funeral he received military honors with a flyover and a 21-gun salute.
C O U N T R Y
“The great memories I have of Charlie Daniels span my entire 40-year career when I was a young private attending his Charlie Daniel Days event as he hosted our unit’s participation. The memories continued with him visiting our unit in the most remote regions of Iraq. I’ll never forget his determination to visit us in spite of the dangers and his few hours on the ground playing music with our soldiers allowed them to turn their memories to home at least for that brief period. We presented him a set of spurs and inducted him as an honorary cavalryman into our unit. I know he was blessed in this life with many things, but being the humble man he was, he acted like it was a block of gold. He has made such an impact on so many of our service men and women with his us unconditional love and support. God bless Charlie Daniels,” stated Maj. Gen. Jeff Holmes, Tennessee Adjutant General. R.I.P. Charlie; play some great fiddle music for the Lord. We shall see you soon.

Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is ON Via AMA Motorcycle Association
T
he American Motorcyclist Association congratulates the AMA Regional Motocross Champions who will lead the race for AMA national titles Aug. 3-8 at the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. “The march to claim an AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is long and competitive,” said AMA Motocross Manager Mike Burkeen. “This August, that march will end for 2020 when 36 national champions hold their AMA National No. 1 plates high and put their names in the record books forever.” In addition to national titles, the best riders will compete for the Nicky Hayden AMA Motocross Horizon Award, presented to the amateur racer who demonstrates the talent and readiness to excel in the pro ranks. As in past years, the rider who takes home that coveted honor will compete in the fastest classes at Loretta Lynn’s. While each racer on the gate has a fair shot to win at Loretta Lynn’s, many fans will have their eyes on the AMA Regional Champions to run at the front. These include multi-class regional champions, such as Husqvarna and Cobra rider Kade Nightingale from Mounds, Oklahoma, the Mideast Mini-E (4-6) Jr. champion and 51cc (46) Limited champion; and KTM and Cobra rider Jaydin Smart from Berry Creek, California, who won the same titles in the Midwest Region.
Other multi-class champions to watch are KTM rider Haiden Deegan from Temecula, California, who won both the Midwest Mini Senior 1 (12-14) and Mini Senior 2 (13-15) titles, and the rider who won the same titles in the Southeast Region, Logan Best from North Port, Florida, on a Yamaha. Two riders who could set some of the fastest lap times at the national include Suzuki rider Dilan Schwartz from Alpine, California, and KTM rider Austin Black from Wildomar, California. Schwartz won the Open and 250 Pro Sport classes in the Midwest Region and Black won both titles in the Southwest Region. In the Women’s class, multi-time amateur national champion, 2020 Northeast Region Women’s class champion and Kawasaki rider Jordan Jarvis from Clayton, North Carolina, is expected to battle Riverton, Utah’s Tayler Allred. Not only did Allred, who rides a KTM, win the Midwest Region Women’s class title, but she also qualified for the national in the 450 B Limited class. In the Junior (25+), fans will be watching to see if 48-year-old former pro and Honda rider Mike Brown, from Bristol, Tennessee, can hold off his younger rivals to win a fourth straight national title. Possible candidates to unseat Brown include Tallahassee, Florida’s Jesse Wentland, who won the Southeast Junior (25+) championship on his Honda, and 2008 AMA Motocross Horizon Award winner Darryn Durham, from Valencia, Pa., who won both the Northeast Open Pro Sport and Junior (25+) titles on his Yamaha. Another rider who will command a lot of attention is Kawasaki rider Jett Reynolds from Bakersfield, California, who won nine consecutive AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships before missing the most recent two years with injuries. Reynolds is bringing his Midwest 450 B regional title to the national.
ABOUT THE AMA AMATEUR NATIONAL MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS Dating to 1975, the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship is one of the longest-running motorsports championships in the country. In 1982, AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Dave Coombs Sr. and Paul Shlegel worked with the AMA to bring the event to Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. It has provided tens of thousands of families a priceless motocross experience at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch every summer since. The success of the amateur national championship program, which has produced a long list of AMA Supercross and Motocross superstars, is unmatched in motorsports. Riders who have progressed through the program include AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers Ricky Carmichael and Jeremy McGrath, as well as current stars such as Eli Tomac, Chase Sexton, Malcolm Stewart and many more. For more information about the national championship program, see mxsports.com. For more information about AMA-sanctioned competition, see americanmotorcyclist.com.
14 - Southern Biker Magazine
“Although the AMA Regional Championships provide a hint of who is expected to run at the front at Loretta Lynn’s, it’s just that—a hint,” Burkeen said. “When the national gate is filled with the fastest amateur motocross racers in America, anything can happen and anyone can win. One thing is certain, the competition will be incredible in every class as racers chase their motocross dreams.” This year, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will operate under a comprehensive mitigation plan, with rules regarding social distancing, social responsibility and mandatory mask zones. The full plan is available here: mxsports.com/ page/2020-event-health-plan. “The success of the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, its longevity and its reputation, is built on the experience and strong working relationship of the AMA and MX Sports,” Burkeen said. “That experience has even been more critical this year as we have made necessary changes to stem the spread of the coronavirus through the work of the Race Leadership Team. We wish the riders, their families and the operations crew a fun and safe week of racing.” To see that future as it plays out in 36 classes running 108 motos, keep an eye on mxsports. com for live results and coverage.
AMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS RESPONDS TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC AMA year-end awards celebrations canceled for 2020; and remote AMA Congress planned Pickerington, Ohio — The AMA Board of Directors has voted unanimously to cancel the 2020 AMA Championship Banquet and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The board further asked AMA President & CEO Rob Dingman to direct staff to: • Make provisions for delivering AMA National No. 1 plates to riders who win national championships in series and AMA Grand Championships successfully held in 2020; • Explore remote alternatives for AMA Congress, the annual meeting for debating and proposing rule updates for AMA-sanctioned activity. “The board made clear that its decision was to protect attendees from exposure to the coronavirus, particularly with the likelihood for an additional surge in cases next winter when the year-end celebrations are traditionally held,” said AMA Chief Operating Officer James Holter. “The board also felt that canceling the events was a responsible financial decision in light of expected low attendance, and the time and resource commitment necessary to hold such celebrations.” August 2020

he 19th Junebug Boogie saw one of its largest crowds in some time. While most all events were canceled due to COVID-19, Junebug Boogie was OK’d and took place as one of the first motorcycle events allowed to go on….. and GO ON, IT DID! Herbert and Amber sweated it out and were rewarded with a HUGE crowd of rally attendees and partygoers. “We have been waiting like everyone else for an event to take place and what better than in Tennessee to go and have a tremendous time”, said Jeff Burkhardt. “We brought 15+ people with us and we had a ball. Everyone we talked with said the same thing. What an event and we are glad to get out, finally.” Hundreds of early attendees came Wednesday to set up and get ready for the 80s party at Scooters. Everyone was dressed for the 80s and it was a great time. More and more folks showed up during the coming days and into the weekend. All-in-all I’d say 2500-3000 people were here. With the extra acreage added a year prior, folks had plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the scenery

and the event. This rally is touted as the largest outdoor parties for adults there is in Tennessee and trust me… IT IS! Vendors for food and merchandise as well as Amberland were set up nose to tail on the midway. The weekends entertainment included music by Aunt Betty, Liars Chair, Shady Sadie, Hillbilly Bonez, Contagious and Southern Accents. The Mighty Midget wrestling was a sight to see. Those wrestlers can get the action going in a BIG way. The SBMag Crew was well represented with about 8 members along with our roaming photographers, Frank and Tina Pate. They got all the actions shots and they were the only photographers in the house for the event. Lots of memories were made and a few I am sure are better left at Junebug, LOL. This one was one for the bucket list and if you missed it, it might have been your only chance this year to attend one. Keep your Knees in the Breeze™.
