WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER
Hello Knee Breezers, The 2020 riding season is just around the corner and the excitement is already building. Daytona Bike Week is quickly approaching and we hope to see you there. The weather is COOOOOOOLD right now and we got spoiled with the unseasonable warm weather we’ve had the last two months, but that’s why they make heated gear or if you prefer, layer up, twist that throttle and ride! The 79th Annual Daytona Beach Bike Week will begin March 6 and ends on March 15. We love this event and this year should be extra special, as many of our friends from across the pond are going to be attending, Danilo and Filomena from Italy, Bernd and Suzi from Germany, Paul and Sam from the UK as well as Fredrik and Anu from Finland. Several hundred thousand other riders will be coming as well, and this will be one of the World’s best kick-offs a riding season has ever seen. It’s a place where memories are made, friendships are renewed and making new friends is as easy as a hello. Look for the Southern Biker Magazine Road Crew at some of our favorite spots; Flagler Beach’s Finns Beachside Pub, the famous Main Street at the Legendary Boot Hill Saloon, the First Turn, the Dog House, Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona and of course the Daytona CONTACT US SOUTHERN BIKER MAGAZINE

Vendors will be everywhere so make the most of your time and see the sights. A month and a half after that, we will be in full summer mode at Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City Beach, FL. Bring your bike out as we present the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show hosted by Southern Biker Magazine. Every make and model of motorcycle is welcome to enter as we have lots of classes and some pretty cool trophies to boot. Go ahead and begin to prep your motorcycle for the riding season. You’ll want to avoid having to work on your bike when riding season begins. Get that regular maintenance done as well as finishing up any customization. Your local motorcycle dealership or independent motorcycle shop can take care of you and your bike if you don’t like wrenching yourself or don’t have time. If you see us out and about covering events, writing articles and taking photos, say “Hi” and ask to snap a photo for the magazine. We enjoy talking with our readers and hearing your stories. 4 TH ANNUAL
FREEDOM 100 RIDE By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
t was fine December day when the 4th Annual Freedom 100 Ride in Daytona Beach, Florida took place. Unlike last year, the weather was absolutely perfect which brought out the riders and supports. A great ride route, tremendous auction items and awesome entertainment from the band Redgate had this event bring in lots of participants. Benefitting Messengers for Homeless Vets and Main Street Station’s Bicycles for Kids,
the event raised thousands of dollars. Steve Stinson stated, “Awesome time yesterday at the Freedom 100 Poker Run; Amazing turnout and a huge Thank You to everyone that donated towards the (final total of) $7,000 that we raised for (two) great causes. Ya’ll Rock!” Joanne Buzzone said, “We are missing Liz (Cunningham) today.” This was one of Liz’s favorite benefits to take pictures of everyone and be associated with. Organizer Randy Tipton did a tremendous job getting this event to roll out without any problems and along with Phaedra Lee, owner of the Main Street Station, hosted one heck of a great charity event. Both along with their volunteer staff work tirelessly for free as 100%
of all proceeds go towards the charities.

The ride stops included the ACR Post 1, Beaver Bar, Rudy’s Bar & Grill, Frank’s Place and Main Street Station. Put the 5th Annual Freedom 100 Ride on your calendar for December 12, 2020 and we’ll see you there.

new decade, a new year, and Carey Hart is feeling altruistic again—and that’s obviously a good thing. On January 16, Hart will be again hosting Good Ride’s Tanks for Troops event, which in its 2020 iteration will showcase a unique selection of customdesigned Indian Motorcycle tanks. Good Ride is a 501(c) (3) charity organization started by the freestyle motocross rider turned streetbike builder to focus on giving back to the community. And that’s the focus of the 2020 Tanks for Troops event, which includes a silent auction of the aforementioned

to support US military veterans and families who may be struggling with physical or mental challenges, and are in need of financial support and additional resources. You don’t even need to be at the event to take part in the action, as bidding is open to all online, or via a mobile device.
The bidding goes live on Thursday, January 9, and closes at 9 p.m. on January 16. With 24 Indian Motorcycle tank covers designed by various artists (including his own daughter), Hart and his team are hoping to surpass the total funds they raised last time they did this, back in 2018. That year, Tanks for Troops rang up $30,000, and it all goes
It sure seems like a twofer to step up and support our military heroes while also becoming the proud owner of a very cool custom piece. With all proceeds benefiting the Infinite Hero Foundation, it’ll be a win either way.

2019 AMA MOTORCYCLE
HALL OF FAME HONORS FIVE NEW INDUCTEES T
he AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame inducted five new members during the 2019 KTM AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Hilton Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The members of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2019 are rights advocate Mark Buckner, off-road racing champion Kurt Caselli, motocross champion Ron Lechien, trials pioneer Wiltz Wagner and museum founder Dale Walksler. Ceremony emcees Perry King and Laurette Nicoll guided the audience through the careers and accomplishments of the inductees. “Each of these motorcyclists has achieved excellence in pursuit of their motorcycling dreams,” King said. “And each one of them has inspired generations of riders to do the same.” During the ceremony, those gathered also honored the memories of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers who recently passed away: Jerry Branch, Arlen Ness, Gene Romero, Peter Fonda and Clark Collins.
The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2019: Kurt Caselli In 1998, at age 15, Caselli won the desert championship in his class. In 2000, he won an amateur championship in three disciplines: enduro, desert and grand prix. He participatedon the US Team in the FIM International Six Days Enduro. He competed in the ISDE for 12 years; Eight times he was the top-finishing American rider and won his class twice. Caselli committed full time to the AMA National Hare and Hound Championship Series in 2011 with the KTM team and won the title and again in 2012 and 2013. Caselli’s focus then shifted to international rally racing. In 2013, he finished strong in Dakar and won the Desafio Ruta 40. His final race before making the full leap to rally racing would be the SCORE-promoted Baja 1000. Tragically, Caselli died in that race, colliding with an animal while competing and suffering fatal injuries. While Caselli is remembered for his incredible skill and talent on an off-road motorcycle in fostering a deep sense of team, dedication and patriotism among U.S. riders competing at the ISDE. Those efforts paid off in 2016 when the U.S. World Trophy Team finally won the World Trophy, an achievement that had eluded American riders since the event began in 1913.

Wiltz Wagner Wiltz Wagner Jr. has tirelessly promoted the sport of observed trials in the U.S. the last four decades. Wagner was first a fiercely competitive and successful trials rider in the 1960s and 1970s and then formed Colorado’s Rocky Mountain Trials Association, one of the oldest AMA-chartered trials clubs in America. Thru the 70s he and working with the AMA, Wagner created and oversaw the North American Trials Council. For the past 46 years, the NATC series, sanctioned by the AMA, has crowned the sport’s national champion. Wagner, who was inducted into the NATC Hall of Fame in 2005 for his contributions to trials, has competed and won in other disciplines, including ice racing and land-speed racing, where he, his late wife and his daughter hold more than 50 records.
Mark Buckner Mark Buckner began his leadership in motorcyclists’ rights advocacy in the late 1980s as the state coordinator for ABATE of Colorado. In 1992, Buckner joined the Motorcycle Riders Foundation board of directors, becoming MRF president and chairman two years later. During his tenure, the MRF implemented strategic planning processes that led to the organization’s financial stability and significant growth. Over the past 25 years, he has delivered more than 100 presentations around the country at state, regional and national rights conferences.
Dale Walksler Dale Walksler, born Nov. 30, 1952, founded Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum that preserves and celebrates the history of motorcycling in America. Beginning with his purchase of a Harley-Davidson Servi-Car when he was in high school, Walksler became a passionate fan of the brand. He opened a HarleyDavidson parts business in 1970 in Glen Ellyn, Ill., then bought a Harley-Davidson dealership in Mount Vernon, Ill., four years later. As his business grew, he moved his motorcycle collection to the dealership to attract customers. In 1999, Walksler sold the dealership and relocated his motorcycle collection to Maggie Valley, N.C. The new museum opened in 2002. Dale’s Wheels through Time Museum sets itself apart from most other museums by featuring motorcycles in running condition. Walksler was not able to be in attendance. His wife, Trish, and son, Matt, accepted the honor on his behalf. AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Buzz Kanter, a longtime friend, read a letter from February 2020

Award Winners Walksler. “Motorcycles are my life passion, and this honor is a lifetime dream come true,” Walksler wrote. “I am humbled to have my name added alongside so many of my heroes at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. “Back in 1977, I chased my passions and bought a small Harley dealership in a small town not too far from here,” he wrote. “I could never have imagined, even in my wildest dreams, that I would one day be inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame. Or that I will, forever, be linked with the greatest names in motorcycle history. Thank you again.”
Ron Lechien Ron competed against some of the greatest motocross racers in history throughout the 1980s, winning 26 nationals and the 1985 125cc AMA National Motocross Championship. Lechien’s natural talent and smooth riding style made him unmistakable on the track. His seemingly effortless speed translated across classes, and he earned wins in 125cc, 250cc and 500cc motocross competition, as well as in 250cc Supercross, the premier class at the time. Lechien, born Dec. 13, 1966, won the 1985 125cc AMA Motocross Championship and was without question one of the era’s top riders. In 1985, Lechien raced the 125cc class for the U.S. team at the Motocross of Nations in Germany and won his class with a 2-1-1 finish. At the 1988 Motocross of Nations in France, he raced the 500cc class and won both of his motos, beating the best in the world. While a severely broken leg in the 1989 500cc AMA National Championship Series ended Lechien’s career prematurely, he is remembered as one of the top riders from one of the mostcompetitive eras of the sport.

lake Davis was named the 2019 Nicky Hayden AMA Road Race Horizon Award winner and was one of four riders to receive AMA Racing Awards at the 2019 AMA Road Race Grand Championship on Oct. 27 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. Davis, 13, from Lynchburg, Virgnia, is no stranger to winning AMA Racing Awards, having won the AMA Youth Road Racer of the Year in 2018. The Nicky Hayden AMA Road Race Horizon Award honors the amateur racer who is poised for success at the professional level. Davis competed in the AMA Lightweight Twins Superstock Expert class at the AMA Road Race Grand Championship and finished in fifth place, while racing a 400cc motorcycle in a 650cc class. His Eli Banish 2019 successes included winning two WERA national championships and seven WERA regional titles. He plans to make his MotoAmerica debut in 2020 at Pittsburgh International Race Complex Aug. 6-8. RACING NEWS Yoshimura Suzuki’s success in Superbike began with Wes Cooley’s championship in 1979, but the peak came 20 years later. In the 11year period from 1999 through 2009, Yoshimura Suzuki won the AMA Superbike title every year except for one, when Nicky Hayden took the title on a Honda. It was a decade of domination by Mat Mladin and Ben Spies on Suzuki race bikes that may never be matched. So here’s a stat to chew on: Neither of the two teams that have won 91 of the 96 Superbike races in the MotoAmerica era will be racing in 2020.

et another new winner for the 450SX class of the 2020 Supercross season takes his jump into the title chase as Eli Tomac took Aneheim2. Thus far, Justin Barcia and the now red plate holder and points leader Ken Roczen are the other two how have taken the top spot on the podium. The three now are in the top three spots in points standing. Defending Champion Cooper Webb is finding 2020 a hard road to haul, but he moves up to the sixth spot in points with a podium finish. Bam Bam (Justin Barcia) had a hard time keeping up at A2 and finished ninth, dropping him out of the #1 spot. The West Coast 250SX class had a ton of drama and crashes eventually giving way to Dylan Ferrandis on the top podium spot. He was welcomed with boos from the crowd as he had torpedoed Christian Craig while Craig was leading. Craig’s bike was toast and he was out of the race, leaving Ferrandis in the race and eventual win when leader Jett Lawrence crashed on the last lap breaking his collarbone. Point’s leader Justin Cooper wound up second helped by everyone else’s crashes. The first stop in the Triple Crown jewel format is Glendale January 26th after this issue goes to print. We’ll report on those results and others in the next issue. Stay tuned as this year’s 450SX series is heating up to be a 4-5 rider competition for the championship.

400 MILLIONTH UNIT O
98cc Dream D-Type

n its 70th anniversary, the Honda motorcycle company has added another major milestone record to their resume. They have built their 400,000,000 Honda motorcycle unit. “For 70 years, Honda has provided to customers worldwide motorcycles that make life easier and enjoyable,” says Honda Motor Company’s CEO, Takahiro Hachigo. “As a result, we have achieved our 400 million-unit milestone. I am grateful to all of our customers, and everyone involved in development, manufacturing, sales, and service of our products.”
In 1949 the Dream D-Type was the bike that kicked off bike production for Honda. The company’s most successful production model is the Super Cub which has been in continuous production since 1958. The Super Cub hit 100 million units in 2017.
Super Cub 2020 Goldwing
Honda sold its 10 millionth motorcycle in 1968, and hit the 50 million mark in 1984; 300 million bikes were churned out by 2014. Since then, Honda says it’s continued to expand production in accordance with its fundamental principle of producing locally where there is demand. Today and Honda cranks out a vast catalog of two-wheelers at 35 facilities in 21 countries across the globe. The company exceeded an annual production of 20 million units for the first time in its history in 2018 (with most going to the Asian market). They should reach their 500 millionth Honda two-wheeler before 2025.
Kawasaki to Build
Tilting Three-Wheeler K
awasaki has filed patents for a unique three-wheel motorcycle that will lean into the curve. With two wheels up front and one in the rear, this three wheeler could be a game changer. The linkages are set up so they can pivot and tilt. If you imagine the front end is supported by a square truss of supports, this system allows the square to pivot into different alignments like a parallelogram. Each of the corners remains the

same distance apart, but their orientation to the bike’s frame can change. The effect is that the two wheels tilt in alignment. Yamaha has patented its own three wheeler called the Niken (written about in a previous issue of Southern Biker Magazine). But this Kawasaki three wheeler version is unique and a “simple structure” and the patent documents claim this solution will save weight and is more efficient than a pair of forks.
Drawings show that the two front wheels can tilt through a wide range of angles and that a single shock absorber and spring mounted behind the wheels will take up suspension duties. Low-speed steering will be achieved with a steering knuckle and rod that is offset in front of the wheels, pulling them left and right with the movement of the handlebars. I hope Kawasaki builds this design as it looks to be more futuristic and could attract new customers to this unique design. February 2020

POLK COUNTY TOY RUN 2019 By Frank & Tina Pate
A
nother nippy, frosty morning was the beginning for the 18th Polk County Toy Run. Riders from all over the area met up at the Village Green Shopping Center in Cleveland, TN where Constable Wayne Henry road lead escort for lots of motorcycles. Assisting in the escort was the Bradley County SO motor division, the Cleveland Police Dept, and the West Polk County Fire Rescue. The ride finished off to Benton TN. Many riders came dressed for the cold and lots of toys were donated for children in need this Christmas.
2019 Soddy Daisy Toy Run By Frank & Tina Pate
I
t was a dreary, cold, rainy Saturday morning but 40 bikes came out to donate and take part in this great event. Due to the heavy rain that ceased at noon, the ride was delayed as several places were flooded along the route but still two riders went on the ride along with several cars. They were still given the “Royal Treatment” and escorted by Fire/Rescue and Police, lights and sirens. Members of the CMA were at Soddy Daisy Fire-hall #2, set up with hot chocolate and snacks Even Biker Santa took time out to be there. After the “bike and cage” ride, everyone returned to Charlie’s Sports Bar for lunch and the raffles. Hundreds of dollars in toys and donations were donated giving many children a happy smile this past Christmas.
