WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER — THE 2020 RIDING SEASON IS FINALLY HERE!
Hello Riders,
The 2020 riding season is here and the excitement is building all over the country. Travel plans have been made by riders from as far away as Australia and Europe to come and enjoy the largest motorcycle rally in the world, the 79th Annual Daytona Beach Bike Week. We know this for sure, as many of our friends from across the pond have let us know their reservations for hotel and bikes have been made. We are getting our bikes tuned up and ready to ride! Are you ready? If not, get your motorcycles serviced and make plans to attend this historic motorcycle event! Daytona Bike Week is our destination to join our friends and meet many new ones March 6-15. There are more events to attend than one can possibly make, but you can choose your favorites and enjoy some great Florida riding such as The Loop ride, which is our favorite. Get your photo taken as you

Roads will be packed with cars and motorcycles. Be sure to watch Later that week, it will host the Ricky Carmichael’s out while on the road and never drink and ride; we Amateur Motocross, the AMA TT Flat Track Race want to see you here next year and the next… as well as the Daytona 200. Included this week will be Chopper Inc. Billy Lane’s Sons of Speed Race at the New Smyrna Speedway where he’ll bring vintage motorcycle racing back to life. Hundreds of spectators will enjoy a day filled with vintage motorcycles reaching 100+ miles per hour and the competition between business owners, vintage pit crews and some of the best racers around the nation. This rally brings in the largest names in the entertainment business, all the motorcycle manufacturers, all the motorcycle industry VIPs, every vendor you can imagine and many celebrities as well, (Keanu Reeves is whispered to be coming this year). If you have never been, all I can say is… SEE YOU THERE! Florida weather today in Daytona was 78 degrees while here in Tennessee it topped out at a rainy 48 degrees. There’s so much to see and buy, including new motorcycles. Once you arrive in

The SBMag Road Crew will be all over Main Street in some of our favorite spots, like the Legendary Boot Hill Saloon, watching the band Hayfire at Full Moon Saloon, Jasmine Cain at Dirty Harry’s and meeting up with Randy Tipton and friends at Main Street Station. Just look for the Southern Biker Road Crew shirts. You might find us at our favorite dining and watering holes too, like Finn’s, the Dog House, Racings North Turn, the Original First Turn, Bruno’s Pizzeria, Zappi’s Italian Garden and many others. Leesburg Bikefest and Thunder Beach are just around the corner and both events are setting up to be their largest event ever. Put those on your “Must Attend List” for this year also.
Hope to see you out on the road…on the Florida Coast! Until then, “Keep Your Knees in the Breeze©”.

CVO ROAD GLIDE 2020
HARLEY-DAVIDSON
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
T
he 2020 Harley-Davidson® CVO™ Road Glide® motorcycle is returning to the H-D line-up after a lot of folks requesting it and the Motor Company putting together the new tech for it. The high-performance motorcycle will be equipped with new tech and offers the rider outstanding long-range comfort and performance.
The H-D Connect system introduces subscription-based cellular connectivity to select Harley-Davidson motorcycles to keep riders connected to their motorcycle through their smart phone using the latest version of the Harley-Davidson® App. The Reflex™ Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS) is a new collection of technology designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration and braking, utilizing the latest chassis control, electronic brake control and powertrain technology. The CVO Road Glide also comes with the single Boom!™ Audio 30K Bluetooth® wireless helmet headset designed for cordless interface with the Boom!™ Box GTS infotainment system. This new headset features the latest wireless communication technology – Mesh Intercom™ Network. The protocol automatically connects to a near limitless number of riders while in public mode to eliminate lost group connections when someone goes out of range. The headset can connect with up to 16 riders in private mode up to five miles, and enables the same functions as a wired headset (CB, phone, navigation prompts, radio and audio, with voice commands) and fulfills the Apple Carplay® microphone requirement for the Boom!™ Box GTS. The Boom!™ Box GTS infotainment system with four Boom!™ Stage II bi-amped speakers (paired in fairing and saddlebag lids), 150 watts per channel from two separate 300-watt amplifiers for 600 watts total power and it comes with a 6.5-inch color touchscreen which is covered with durable Corning® Gorilla® Glass and offers low reflectivity with minimal sun washout for exceptional visibility in all situations. The system comes with advanced navigation, personalization options, and integration with the Harley-Davidson App. The entire system can be managed through the touch screen, the motorcycle hand controls and by voice commands.

Other key 2020 CVO Road Glide model features include exclusive Knockout™ 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels, Fang Front Spoiler, frame-mounted shark-nose fairing, molded saddlebags featuring One Touch latches and a high-performance Screamin’ Eagle® Heavy Breather intake. Some stand out features include; Heated Kahuna™ Collection hand grips match Kahuna shifter pegs, brake pedal cover, muffler end caps, heated grips and rider and passenger boards. It also comes with low-profile two-piece fuel tank console with lighted CVO™ logo. The motorcycle will come in a single-color choice: Premium Sand Dune monotone finish with pearl topcoat and subtle graphics highlighted by Smoked Satin Chrome, Gloss Black and Black Onyx finishes. Front and rear wheels are finished in Gloss Black/Smoked Satin. Heavy Breather air cleaner is finished in Gloss Black.
Since its inception in 1999, the HarleyDavidson Custom Vehicle Operations program has created exclusive motorcycle models for the most-discerning customers, often using finishes, materials, technology and accessories that are only available on a CVO model. The Milwaukee-Eight® 117 powertrain – the most displacement and power offered factoryinstalled in a Harley-Davidson motorcycle – is exclusive to CVO models. The 2020 CVO Road Glide model base price comes at a very affordable $40,999. Get to your H-D dealer and get yours reserved today as it will be a limited production model. March 2020

AHDRA RETURNS
WITH FULL 2020 SCHEDULE
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
D
rag racers of American-made V-Twin motorcycles collectively rejoiced three months ago when news broke that beloved racing organization AHDRA was firing back up and heading to the racetrack. Bill Rowe and his band of employees and volunteers are making it happen. Now AHDRA is announcing a complete schedule and class line-up, showing the tremendous sponsor response and sponsorship opportunities still available. The season opens at the traditional Nitro Harley Headquarters of Rockingham Dragway. “At our first race, we will be giving away a 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide by a raffle,” said AHDRA President Bill Rowe Jr. That’s exciting news to those who enter the raffle and will be at the first event. After that, the series moves on to Numidia, to the Midwest at Cordova, west to Sturgis, north of the border to Quebec, then heads south to Atlanta, Orlando and Gainesville. “Thank you everyone for the amazing outpouring of support,” said Rowe. “I really didn’t know what to expect when we got into this, but the response has been amazing. Stay tuned for more news to come.” The excitement is building in the racing communities as well as with the fans. “To have this great series return is awesome! I hope they bring it back to Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tennessee again”, said James Travers. “That’s some of the best motorcycle racing I have ever seen.” There are many sponsorship opportunities still available for performance companies to hop on the AHDRA bandwagon. AHDRA is owned by Pulse Marketing, the Hellertown, Pennsylvania-based motorsports promotion company run by veteran drag racer Rowe and his family. For more information, go to their website at: www.raceahdra.com.

S
uzuki has been in the control room and not letting any information out on a totally new machine, what was the fastest production motorcycle in America. They locked the doors and threw away the keys on planning building where their plans were being made, until… the plans were leaked from the Japanese patent office. In recent months, several Suzuki patent applications have hinted at the next-gen Hayabusa. The new design look and new tech going into this machine will set a new standard in the motorcycle industry.

Formally the fastest production bike (most manufacturers have caught up to the old Hayabusa), the new engine will go from 1340cc to an astounding 1440cc. Going that route makes it more difficult to meet new emission standards without losing performance. It is y estimated to have a market-topping c a r dy G n a R 200+ horsepower which will give it a , n ag Ma M e dramatic increase in torque. There were h By T rumors that pointed to Suzuki using some kind of turbo or compressor. But for now, it seems that the Hayabusa won’t be using a supercharged engine.

Next, it will have a carbon canister which will absorb the exhaust gases, lowering down the harmful emissions. The design drawings also show an oil sump which keeps the oil from spreading inside. A large collector box will hide the new dual catalytic converters as well. Furthermore, the design also looks slimmer than the existing frame hinting towards the weight reduction Suzuki might be trying to achieve. This is obviously where more speed will come from, along with the upgrade on the powertrain. A semi-automatic gear box among other tech will give this speed demon drastically more comfort so the rider can travel longer distances with more ease on this new version. With better electronics and a more aerodynamic design, this Hayabusa should be one of the top sellers of all time. According to Bennett’s source, Suzuki will reveal the production version of the new Hayabusa at the 2020 EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show November 3-8, 2020. Until then, expect a few Hayabusa spy images as we inch closer to the unveil. *Source - Bennetts

RICKY BRABEC; FIRST AMERICAN
WINS DAKAR RALLY
I
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
t’s been 30 years since Honda tasted victory at the Drakar Rally. An American has never tasted victory in the rally’s 41-year history. After racing in this series for eight years, Ricky Brabec has won the Drakar Rally, the world’s toughest and cruelest rally. He won his class by a huge margin, claiming the coveted bronze Tuareg prize. Saudi Arabia played host to the 2020 edition of the rally, which featured a 5,000 kilometer course over mostly sandy terrain. The grueling annual off-road competition first took place in 1978-1979 and has been held annually since then, except for 2008.
Ricky Brabec The Monster Energy Honda Team ace, snatched the lead on day three and refused to relinquish the top spot until the race wrapped up, two stage victories and 5000 kilometers later. His margin of victory was 16 minutes, 26 seconds over Husqvarna rider Pablo Quintanilla of Chile.

ACQUIRES J&P CYCLES RevZilla’s parent company, Comoto Holdings, has acquired J&P Cycles, the industry’s largest omni-channel retailer of aftermarket products for riders of American-made V-twins. By adding J&P Cycles to RevZilla and Cycle Gear in the Comoto Holdings family of brands, the company has expanded, diversified and strengthened its position in the motorcycle industry. J&P Cycles will continue to operate as a distinct and differentiated retail brand under the operational leadership of company veteran Zach Parham, who will join the Comoto executive leadership team in his position as president of J&P Cycles. Zach Parham is the son of J&P founder and AMA Hall of Fame member John Parham, who formed the company in 1979. J&P Cycles operates retail stores in Ormond Beach, Florida, in the Daytona area; in Sturgis, South Dakota; and in Anamosa, Iowa, where the company was originally founded as a small motorcycle shop. The addition of J&P Cycles strengthens Comoto Holdings’ position as the largest omni-channel retail platform in the powersports aftermarket products industry. March 2020

Introducing Children to Motorcycles on Their Own Level By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
met Mark Augustyn & Nancy Gerloff at the Blue Ridge Run Rally in Cherokee, NC and was fascinated by their adaptations on introducing small children to motorcycle riding and culture. Their story telling renditions with a pair of cartoon monkeys help introduce children to the joys of motorcycle riding. Mark explained how they get started and told me how they came up with the idea. It has seemed to have taken off and the Mimi & Moto stories continue to roar across pages and into the living rooms all over America. Getting on a child’s level and encouraging them through photos and short stories gets the little ones excited about reading and learning more. Add in female and male small monkeys who ride motorcycles to do the story telling and you have the attention of thousands of children willing to learn more about Mimi & Moto and their travels. In a recent interview Mark stated, “As Little Rider Enterprises, we have self-published two books, The Adventures of Mimi and Moto (released in October 2016) and Mimi and Moto Ride the Alphabet (released in July 2019).” Nancy and Mark are both AMA members and they created Mimi and Moto and the accessories that go with their new creation. By doing their lines and attracting more and more children, they have earned several awards in a very short time span. Just last year, they won the Motorcycle Industry Council’s 2019 Gas Tank Competition, which is the MIC’s competition and mentorship program. It pairs individuals and groups with an industry professional who offers coaching and advice for developing a business plan for a new motorcycle product or service. The business plan and expansion of ideas has now become a reality. Their immediate plans for 2020 are to promote Mimi and Moto Ride the Alphabet book to the public, teachers and schools. Getting the cute monkey couple into the schools could be just the ticket for attracting new riders, too. They also plan to release more books and merchandise, increase distribution, reach children and families who do not ride yet, animate the characters for a series and expand internationally.
Their books are available on their website at www.mimiandmoto.com, Amazon, eBay and Etsy. Some favorite retail shops that carry their books are the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, Barber Motorsports Museum, Wheels Through Time Museum, and more. They are also are visible with their booths at many motorcycle events and rallies. They will be managing the MotoAmerica Kids Zone in 2020 so you can look for them there. You can find more updates on their website www.mimiandmoto.com and on Facebook.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON DEVELOPING AN
Adaptive Riding Cruise Control
for Riding in Groups By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
H
arley-Davidson is staying on the cusp of future inventions as their R&D is in the works on designing a sophisticated radar-based adaptive cruise control. This would allow the riders in a group to set sail with the lead bikes and not have to do so much yo-yoing back and forth to keep up then slow down. It would set the back riders speed comparable to the front rider and keep the distance you set it. KTM and Ducati both confirmed that production bikes with radar-based adaptive cruise control will be in their ranges within the next few months. KTM’s nextgeneration Super Adventure will debut its version of the system, using Bosch radar components derived from existing automotive adaptive cruise control. Ducati will introduce a similar setup on at least one version of the Multistrada in 2020. Harley-Davidson’s version far exceeds those models, based on patents it appears to be more advanced as it will have the ability to distinguish between cars and motorcycles. Harley’s first patent applications show that the system will be able to operate the motorcycle’s brakes and the throttle to maintain a constant distance from the vehicle it’s following. The latest patent version shows the system will use cameras to identify individual motorcycles and explain how it is programmed to follow another bike even when riding in a staggered formation. The electronic controller locks the motorcycle with the vehicle and dynamically controls the speed of the motorcycle based on an output of a kinematic controller. That controller uses the sensors to take into account the distance of the motorcycle to the vehicle, velocity of the vehicle, velocity of the motorcycle, a cruise set speed associated with the motorcycle, a desired separation distance between the motorcycle and the vehicle, and a desired separation time between the motorcycle and the vehicle. Like KTM’s and Ducati’s radar systems, the proposed Harley-Davidson design will also incorporate a rear radar sensor acting as a blind-spot monitor, lighting warning signals mounted in the appropriate mirror when there’s another vehicle lurking over your shoulder. The system is receiving negative reviews from riders on blogs and other internet sites. The main issue is folks are already associating it with problems in the automotive world; when the system doesn’t work as planned or something unexpected occurs and the bike’s system begins to react before you can. Christopher wrote, “This sounds like a disaster in the making. No amount of techno-wizardry is going to compensate for poor riding skills.” Many see accidents coming from the use of it, but I see a potential for making long distance riding even more comfortable than ever before. It appears the earliest we’ll see this option on new H-D models will be in 2021 models. We’ll keep you informed on this one as it hits the market for trials.
