WORDS FROM THE PUBLISHER
Hello Readers and Riders, Wow, what a crazy last couple of months! If you’re like us, you’re tired of hearing about COVID-19 (coronarirus), social distancing, shelterat-home and all the other terms that have been beat into our brains until we hear them rattling around in our head while we try to sleep. If you are concerned about our future, you are not alone. Being a small business owner and a REALTOR®, this economic shutdown hurt us tremendously. For the first time since we started publishing Southern Biker Magazine
in August 2009, we were not able to publish the May 2020 issue. Due to businesses closing and events being canceled because of our government telling everyone to stay at home, we couldn’t publish the May issue. How can the projected numbers be so inaccurate, yet the government still makes everyone wear masks, and parts of the country still have not opened back up? Its mind-boggling how this came about and turned our world upside down so quickly and violently. Our hearts go out to those that lost loved ones whether from COVID-19 or depression-induced suicide because of COVID-19, or lost their business. Tragedy is unlimited these days. This is a new world now and we don’t do change well. We all want to go back to how things where a few short months ago

but, they say most likely we will never go back to that world as we knew it. We think that’s the most difficult thing to try realizing and accepting. One thing is for sure, thank goodness we have motorcycles! Nothing like going for a ride to get fresh air and feel the wide-open spaces to reboot your soul. We are also very thankful we live in the country with five acres to roam. We never run out of things to do because there is always something that needs repaired or a project that needs to be completed. If you are tired of being cooped up in a tiny apartment and thinking about relocating to the country, give me a call/text at 865-405-6989. Keep Your Knees in the Breeze©

MOTORCYLE RACING
K C IS B BACK A W
ith onslaught of this corona virus, motorcycle events and racing have been postponed or even canceled. As time has shown us, this virus isn’t as bad as a plague as “experts” thought. It has begun to subside in hurry (unlike their models had shown). And the infections and death tolls are extremely lower than expected. Several Events are already back on the calendar for this year like Thunder Beach in Panama City Beach, Leesburg Bikefest in Florida, Cherokee’s Blue Ridge Run, Junebug Boogie in Cookeville, Tennessee and others as organizers push to get their sponsors and marketing up and running. Just like those events, Motorcycle Racing around the country is resuming somewhat and revised schedules are beginning to be published as this corona virus has begun to subside in hurry (unlike their models had shown). But just like NASCAR, several motorcycle sports including Supercross are putting on events without fans and in a specific area or tracks. I for one am not a fan of sports without fans in the stands; it’s like having ice cream on a cone and saying you can’t have a cone. All kinds of video game e-Racings have popped up and even televised with announcers doing their part, but it’s just NOT RACING. No matter what fan of motorcycle racing you are, be happy that we are going back racing and that those athletes are even happier to throw their leg across that seat and twist that throttle. Our favorite daredevil speed demons are coming back to the tracks and just in time! As racing resumes with this Stage-1 part of racing format, fans cannot attend, but soon as we move into Stage-2 formats, we should see racing in a reserved manner with a limited number of fans in stands. Then soon after that, we should have everything get back to normal with no restrictions. Supercross is the first to get going and they are having the final seven rounds of the 2020 Supercross season at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City Utah and configuring the track differently for each race. They will be racing without fans for now and the racers are very aware of it. “It’s a bummer the fans aren’t in the stadium and we can’t really hear those fans when we race, but there are so many people that just want something to happen right now, so all of us just being out on the track right now is going to be huge for the whole sport”, said current points leader and new father Eli Tomac. “Oh, yeah, I’m getting pretty pro. I’m pretty fast with diaper changes.” The 450SX standings as the racing continues are: Eli Tomac – 226 pts, Ken Roczen – 223 pts, and defending champion Cooper Webb – 197 pts.

Keegan’s Birthday
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
B
irthdays at my age aren’t really a big deal, but when you’re a child, it is HUGE! Well, when this Corona stuff came out and shut everything down, it also shut down kids playing with kids or even going to birthday parties. Shawnta Pelfrey, in Port Orange, Florida, is the mother of Keegan, an autistic boy with a love for music and motorcycles. His birthday was coming up and with no party that could be thrown, she had to do something else and she had to think outside the box. Shawnta explained, “He was born a micro preemie at just 1lb 12oz. He spent nine months in the hospital before he could come home and when he did come home he was on a ventilator until he was three. He has a VP shunt which drains in spinal fluid, has bronchopulmonary dysplsua and is autistic. He fell in love with bikes because his uncle always put him on his Harley when he was little! He’s always gets super excited when he hears a bike!” Shawnta decided to ask for some help from some of the locals. She went on Facebook and ask for some motorcycles to ride by and wish her son a happy birthday. A couple of friends joined in and tried to get riders to come by. Hoping for 30-40 riders, Shawnta and her friends, especially Keegan, were blown away. 500+ motorcycles, some jeeps and cars road buy escorted by police and the fire department to give this little guy a birthday for the books. A couple of stunt riders performed in front of his house as well. These bikers brought the party to Keegan! Folks came from all over the area including as far away Jacksonville, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale. Happy birthday Keegan, from your friends at Southern Biker Magazine.

NORTON SELLS TO TVS, INDIA MOTORCYCLE MANUFACTURER
By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
A
nother motorcycle titan company is purchased by a foreign company. Norton, one of the iconic British brands has been purchased by India motorcycle manufacturer TVS Motor Company. In a press release, TVS said it has purchased assets of the bankrupt Norton Motorcycles for $20 million. In its announcement, TVS did not specify exactly what assets it purchased. Recent reports indicate that Garner sold off some assets before the firm was removed from his control. TVS did mention both the retro Commando models and the 1,200 cc V4 RR superbike, but it’s unclear if they will have the rights to those designs. TVS Joint Managing Director Sudarshan Venu said the company would help “Norton to regain its full glory in the international motorcycle landscape.” He continued, “Norton will continue to retain its distinctive identity with dedicated and specific business plans. TVS Motor will work closely with customers and employees in building the success and pre-eminence of the Norton Motorcycles brand and we look forward to growing together globally in the years to come.” Founded in 1898 and once among the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturers, Norton declined and fell along with the rest of the British motorcycle industry in the 20th century. Its resurrection has been attempted twice in the past. The company was placed in liquidation as hundreds of Creditors came forward; from unpaid taxes to outstanding bank loans to potential customers who put down deposits on motorcycles that were never delivered. TVS can capitalize on the Norton name in India just as their former British motorcycle rival Royal Enfields has done and are extremely popular. The value of the Norton name is obviously debatable but the name is icon status. Life comes full circle sometimes just as it has lately. Manufacturing for these motorcycles has shifted from the days when India was under British rule. Norton, like Land Rover and Jaguar before it, has become a once-iconic British brand owned by Indian companies as the former subjects buy out their former rulers.
HARLEY-DAVIDSON AUCTIONING OFF CUSTOM LIVEWIRE FOR
COVID-19 RECOVERY By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
H
arley-Davidson and their design team in collaboration Bonhams is offering up a special edition LiveWire™: custom painted, loaded with carbon fiber accessories and signed by the Davidson family. All proceeds will be donated to United Way Worldwide COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery. The donated LiveWire™ has an estimated value of close to $50,000. It is a one-of-one factory custom built using “#500 of 500 ‘First Strike’ edition LiveWires.” Never-to-be-replicated, this machine features a one-off paint scheme and unique graphics package designed by the Harley-Davidson design team. They also included a full array of carbon fiber Genuine Parts and Accessories including carbon fiber Speed Screen Blade, Tail Section Cowl, and Tank Trim. In addition to the custom LiveWire™, the winning bidder and a guest will have the opportunity to take part in an exclusive delivery experience and “behind-the-scenes” Harley-Davidson tour in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This private, hosted experience will include domestic roundtrip airfare for two, two night’s hotel accommodations, and a behind-the-scenes archival tour of the Harley-Davidson Museum. It is an unparalleled look at the heritage and future of Harley-Davidson Motor Company. As for United Way, their U.S. division is reporting that calls for assistance, mostly for food, financial help and housing, are 200 percent to 400 percent higher than normal. “We expect as many calls for help in the next six months as we usually get in a full year,” the nonprofit reported. The auction ends May 26, 2020 and at the time of writing, the bid stands at $48,000.
As TVS put it, “This will be one of the most interesting acquisitions of a storied motorcycle maker in recent times and will reflect TVS Motor Company’s and India’s rapidly rising prominence in the international two-wheeler market.” 14 - Southern Biker Magazine

ntertainment is what folks crave when they go out to their favorite watering hold, music venue, concert and yes, motorcycle event. We spend our time and money at places and when the entertainment is good, we cheer and holler and sing along. One such band caught my eye during Daytona Bike Week and I thought I would bring their story to our readers.
I 16 - Southern Biker Magazine
Greg Zen, the founding member of the band, StraightJacket Smile, was traveling the United States playing with top acts as a “hired gun” so to speak. He was signed by Arista Records and when a top band had a lead guitarist out, Greg stepped in and performed without that band missing a beat. Greg said, “The record industry crashed, I wasn’t making an income from it, so decided
to form a band.” Thus, StraightJacket Smile had begun. During the beginning years, band members came and went, but the dream of having a band that jelled was still in the cards for Greg. In October of 2018, drummer Gary Gange jumped on board. Greg said “Gary and I had both been hearing from a mutual friend of ours that we needed to be playing together for four years before we had even known each other, so his entrance in to the band seemed like somewhat of a matter of fate”. In June of 2019 Joey Fingers joined the band after their bass player, Mike Dillon had to take medical leave for a kidney transplant. Joey was a veteran of band scene and was a good addition to the group. Aneta Torres Symankowska, from Poland, was able to move to the United States in 2017 after befriending Greg on the internet. During their time on different continents, they wrote songs together and formed a great friendship. When she arrived in the US, she did not speak any English, so they had that goal to accomplish. An impactful learning curve was instilled and Anita began her transformation to lead singer for the band. The girl has a set of lungs on her, I can tell you that. She can sing just about any song out there and do it with fire and enthusiasm not always seen in some others. The band is based out of St. Petersburg, Florida and are a true “working” cover band that travels all over Florida. Greg credits their popularity to “loyal and dedicated” fan base that the band values immensely. They have played many venues around Florida and are now expanding their horizons. If you ever have a chance to see them in concert, make sure you get a good seat because they will bring it! To get more info on the band or where they play next, go to their Facebook page, StraightJacket Smile.
