words from the publisher
Hello Folks,
We are living in a very scary world right now with police officers being ambushed in cold blood and terrorist attacks. The presidential race is heating up and the outcome will surely change the path our country is traveling down, whether for good or bad. We all hope the right path is the successor. We desperately need relief from the lack of effective leadership. So much uncertainty in the future makes us all nervous and on edge. Law enforcement officers are on high alert and changing the way they go to calls, in order to better protect each other. Families of law enforcement officers are nervous because they don't know if their loved ones will return home safe each day. My family is a strong supporter of law enforcement and are eternally grateful for the sacrifices they make and put their lives on the line for us. When you see an officer out and about, tell him or her how much you appreciate them. You will be surprised how much that little gesture will mean to them. Make a point to do one nice thing for someone else each day and let's make this world a little better. We are all members of the human race and it's time we put aside our differences and become a strong nation again and find a way to defeat the terrorism that wants to destroy us and our way of life; let's not destroy ourselves by continuing to be divided. Let's unite and ride! "Keep Your Knees In The Breeze!" Kristin "Ms Mag Man" Gracy Send comments to Kristin@SouthernBiker.us President/Publisher Kristin Gracy msmagman@southernbiker.us 865-405-6989

hen it comes to our soldiers, no one cares more than Americans, not matter what color or sex you are. When it comes to one of our own, Americans who live in Chattanooga respond even larger. More than 1200 motorcycles came together and rode in honor of the Fallen Five of Chattanooga. Even State Senator Todd Gardenhire rode in the event. Beginning at Thundercreek HarleyDavidson, the largest motorcycle ride to ever take place in the Chattanooga area roared out to honor the five soldiers who were murdered just a year prior. The route took the riders down Lee Highway to the National Cemetery, passing the Marine recruiting station and the Naval Reserve Center where all five soldiers were killed. Veterans, citizens, big bikers alike had tears flowing as they still feel the hurt of losing local soldiers and remember that fateful day.

From the flyover to the 21gun salute to taps being played… no dry eyes could be seen. “No matter where you train from San Diego to Parris Island, South Carolina. What battalion, what company. You’re there as a band of brothers and sisters and you have each other’s backs no matter what,” said veteran Jerry Jameson. Some riders returned to Thundercreek H-D for fellowship and enjoying the rest of the day with live music, food and enjoying each other’s company. “It was great to see such an amazing turnout to honor those heroes… Special thanks to George R. Burgan and Dan Parks and all others involved in making this ride happen”, said rider Shawn O’Neill.

The money raised from the ride benefited the Wreath’s Across America with the Patriot Guard Riders. To have lived in Chattanooga for over 10 years, there are no words that can describe how proud I am to know how Chattanooga motorcycle riders will not let go, and remember their soldiers. I’m humbled to have seen so many come and ride and honor these men. Everyone coming as a group, no drama, no strife, no problems. I’m just proud.

community and riders came together to show their support for the youngest of the Chattanooga Fallen Five, 21-year-old LCpl Skip Wells. Everyone gathered at Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Georgia to begin a celebration of life and remembering LCpl Wells. It was at Sprayberry High School a couple years before in the ROTC program where LCpl Wells decided he wanted to become a US Marine. After his life was taken, his mother, Cathy Wells began the LCpl Skip Wells foundation and one of the benefactors from that foundation is the ROTC program at Sprayberry High School. “Kids that might need help going to school, we can help them. Skip was one of those who needed help going to school and paying for it. This will help,” said Cathy Wells.
Over 500 motorcycles went on the 100 mile of ride to Thundercreek Harley-Davidson where the celebration of life continued. There the riders were given a patriotic welcome and enjoyed live music, great food and remembering LCpl Skip Wells and the other Fallen Five.

15th Junebug Boogie Hosts Over 3,000 By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
f you didn’t go… well, you missed a BIG ONE. The 15th annual Junebug Boogie was off the chain! Over 3,000 attendees took in all the day and nightlife that is…the Junebug Boogie. Campers, tents, RVs and more covered the entire facility. Amber & Herbert put on one heck of show and their newly purchased 75 acres of flat land bordering their already huge JBB property made more room for more people and more partying than ever before. The Kimberly White Project took the stage Thursday leading up to Aunt Betty & Jasmine Cain on Friday who sent the crowd into overdrive. Saturday night began with Amy Brown and Phoenix Rising leading into the JBB’s headliner band from Daytona, Hayfire. They countrified, rocked, bluesed and boogied the stage for the thousands in attendance for their closing show. Throw in a little comedy from ventriloquist Crystal Birdwell and you have one of the best Junebug Boogies ever. The weather was hot and perfect for lots of mini-pools that folks had all over the campground. The new 2016 Mr & Ms Junebug were crowned before a huge audience. The burnout pit seems to garner larger crowds every year and this year there were about 300 people hoping to see some gnarly tires pop. The bike games stadium was maxed out with competitors and folks cheering them on. The Southern Biker Road Crew was in full force as was our very respected Garza Law Ladies who had tons of awesome free giveaways for everyone. Biker Bob from USA Biker Parties got some great shots of everything from rally goers, the bike show, all the games and concerts that went on during the four day n event. The entertainment was impressive, the crowd was huge and now the campground is larger than ever before. I’m thinking the next JBB will be one for the record books. (I heard a little birdy that tweeted there might just be a new larger stage on the other side of the property.) Time will tell, so make plans to be at the next one. The Junebug Boogie is becoming the largest growing rally in the southeast. What a great time for everyone and a huge thank you to a great crowd. The Boogie Too is just around the corner so pack your trailers, tents and trucks and come on! It’s also Herbert and Amber’s fourth anniversary. The gag gifts for Herbert and Amber from you rally folk’s gets funnier every year.

Kentucky Bike Rally By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
W
ith names like Colt & Mustang being mentioned, you’d think it was old western or something. Nope, it was the Kentucky Bike Rally and yep, those were names being talked about. Except it was Colt Ford & Mustang Sally. The entertainment was booming this year and the weather was more than perfect. Along with those two top entertainers, there was the Toxic Pistols, Louisiana Swamp Donkey, the Curt Towne Band, Charlie Bonnet III and RB Stone. The music seemed to never stop… except for the Cherry Bomb Dance girls. At the Union County Fairgrounds, the bike show and bike games were held indoors in the covered arena. Seating room was a premium around the arena and what a time everyone had. The dirt drags carried on during the day and a couple guys came with some custom rear tires just for the event. Many contest were held like the tattoo contest, best campsite and of course, the Miss Kentucky Bike Rally contest. There were tons of vendors with everything you’d want or need to buy including all your favorite foods. This is one of those must go to bike rallies so if you haven’t been yet, put it on your 2017 calendar and we’ll see you there.

March Moto Madness By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
M
arch Moto Madness is happening all over the world; a non-stop worldwide weekend event. Guys get together and do some trail riding and contest riding and have a great time doing it all. Since being introduced to it several years ago, I’ve seen this event grow by leaps and bounds. It’s more than just a dual sport Mecca for the motorcycle adventure rider; the attendee numbers continue to grow quickly every year and big name companies are beginning to take notice.
MMM began in 2006 in the mountains of East Tennessee by some guys just wanting to get out in the spring as early as possible, pack up the bikes and go riding and camping for a few days. Who could ask for more than hanging out with like-minded friends, camping and motorcycle riding? Well, how about the rest of the world? Now MMM has grown to include other MMM events held on the same days around the world. This type of event is catching on with riders from teenage (with parents) to older riders who can still ride it like they stole it. Women riders have begun to make their presence felt and be a part of the fun too. There were many events for every type and experienced rider to compete in along with several laughs as well. Rain or shine, these guys ride! They ride on asphalt, grass, dirt, mud, gravel, in water and everything there is to twist that throttle open wide. Some of the competitions included at Tellico this year were barrel racing, the hill climb competition, the trials/Cherokee competition and the ever present obstacle course competition. “The hill climb, as usual, was full of insanity. There were three divisions, each with its own hill climb course. The lighter the bike, the more difficult the route up the hill. Of course, some contestants decided to try heading up the course designed for 250cc dirt bikes on their R1200GSAs. They didn’t get very far, but it provided good entertainment”, said Twisted Throttle Founder & CEO Erik Stephens.
20 - Southern Biker Magazine
“MMM is like a family reunion of adventure riders, and that’s why we’ve been going back year after year.” “We’ve primarily been dual sport oriented but the area's great diversity of roads has broadened our range of riders. Great twisty asphalt (Cherohala Skyway, the Dragon), groomed gravel (the Dirt Dragon) or gnarly single track (trail 81 or 82) offers much diversity for the whole range of Dual Sport / ADV Bike. Food has always been a big part of our rides thanks to Don Stover and his culinary prowess as well as a host of volunteers that help make sure everybody eats”, said MMM. Meals included at MMM are Breakfast Fri, Sat & Sun and Dinner Fri & Sat nights. The main MMM rally is located in beautiful Tellico Plains, Tennessee at 801 Steer Creek Road. Home to the Tellico Bike Rally, Micky Fouts (owner of the property) states this event is growing so fast that he may need to expand the camping area next year. “I’ve got a bike rally here each year and bikers come from all over the area to enjoy our 4-day event. MMM is bringing in riders from around the world. It’s growing so fast and large that is beginning to draw the numbers that the bike rally does.” The property has many acres for RV’s, campers, tents, etc. for every type of camping wants and needs. The main campfire is big draw at night for everyone to gather around and tell stories from the day’s adventures. John Payne
Despain This year’s MMM took place around the World in the USA, Japan, Spain, Taiwan, Wales, Vietnam, Belgium, Bhutan, Brazil, England, Greece, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan and South Africa sites. Next year, it may just expand further into the motorcycle world and the Tennessee event may reach record numbers. Make your plans to bring your bike to next year’s event and we’ll see you there.

ith defending champion Ryan Dungey still out due to a cracked C6 vertebra he sustained in a crash at the 2016 Thunder Valley MX, the field is really wide open and Ken Roczen is making the most of it.
At the Spring Creek MX in Millville, MN in the 450 class, the first 4 laps were an intense battle between the three of the top riders. Roczen came to the front passing Eli Tomac and Justin Barcia and once up front, he never looked back. Roczen took his 11th moto of the season. In the second moto, Roczen again showed why he’s the man to beat as he powered his Suzuki to another win with second going to Marvin Musquin and third to Eli Tomac.
the field of points leaders who were charging to the front. He finished the day with a (6-10). Webb maintained his red plate and was happy to come away not losing any ground in the points.
“Today was tough as we were faced with a few challenges throughout the day, including a bent shifter during the second moto,” said Roczen. “Fortunately I was able to grab clean shifts in order to make sure that I did not take the chance of losing points. Overall I’m happy to walk away with another win, but I need to go home and improve my starts so we can get out front a little sooner.”
Roczen takes Spring Creek MX
In the 250 class, Cooper Webb is touting his talent by coming through the field and racing for first with local favorite Alex Martin. With three laps to go, Martin crashed but managed to remount his bike and finish in third. Webb went on to finish first followed by Jeremy Martin in second. The second race would see an even harder fought race as Webb would only manage a second place and Jeremy Martin took his third moto win of the season. Both followed by Alex Martin in third.
Ken Roczen
One my favorites, Adam Ciancarulo of Port Orange, Florida got out front in the lead during the second moto, but slowly went backwards into

Cookeville, Tennessee Receives First 2017 Harley-Davidson Regional Rally Southern Backroads H.O.G. Rally By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
C
ookeville is no stranger to motorcycles, riding and beautiful scenery. They’re also no stranger to H.O.G. Rallies as they’ve held several state H.O.G. events in the past. I wrote about Cookeville in 2014 article when the city opened its arms to a motorcycle ride going from the West Coast to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC. I labeled the city, “The Heart of Tennessee”, because I know the city stands for everything that the entire state should, as far as welcoming in strangers (especially on motorcycles). This town and the entire community opens its arms and embraces the motorcycle events that come to their area. I’ve never, ever sat down to have breakfast and an elderly lady helping her husband up as they finish, walk by and say, “Thank you for coming. Hope you’ll come see us again.” We had never met her before, but that right there is Cookeville. Just a great down-home place with awesome folks who don’t mind a little rumble down the street from time to time. Well, Harley Davidson announced that Cookeville was chosen as the site for the very first Regional HOG Rally. “We are honored to host an event of this caliber. Not only is this a huge win for Cookeville, but for the state as we welcome H.O.G. members from around the globe to Tennessee today, one year from today and beyond,”
28 - Southern Biker Magazine
Commissioner Kevin Triplett, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development said. “Our branding campaign for the state is The Soundtrack of America. Made in Tennessee. Part of that soundtrack is the rumble of a Harley-Davidson traveling our scenic, awardwinning backroads.” “We are looking forward to bringing the ‘Southern Backroads H.O.G. Rally’ to Tennessee. Cookeville was an obvious choice for a rally in this region,” Todd Robinson, H.O.G. Regional Manager said. “They have an experienced local committee combined with a community that truly welcomes motorcycle riders.” For more information on the “Southern Backroads H.O.G. Charity Ride for Bristol Crisis Center

lack Wolf HarleyDavidson in Bristol, VA/TN, held a charity ride and fundraiser for the Bristol Crisis Center. At registration they had a blessing of the bikes and then a ride to downtown Bristol where the city shut down several blocks for a block party and it was also the Kick-off Bike Night for Quaker Steak & Lube. The Bristol Crisis Center is a non-profit agency which has been helping thousands of citizens, for free, in the surrounding communities for over 40 years. Sinc 1973, our agency has grown to include trained crisis workers who provide resources for clients dealing with a variety of issues, including sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, abuse, neglect, suicide and much more. With a great turnout despite the possibility of rain, BWHD presented a check for $1,365 to Executive Director Stephanie Poe of the Bristol Crisis Center. Partnering sponsors included Sacred Ink, Bristol Brew, Courtyard by Marriott and Quaker Steak & Lube.
A
utomotive giant Volkswagen is apparently considering diverging itself from Ducati Motor Holdings in an effort to raise capital following the massive fines the company has incurred as a result of the Dieselgate saga, where Volkswagen and Audi cars were found to be cheating on emissions testing. Now under the guidance of CEO Matthias Mueller, Volkswagen purchased Ducati in 2012 under then long-time CEO and later chairman of the company, Ferdinand Piech, for $870 million and could now be worth as much as $1.5 billion in today’s market. And considering the two-wheeled brand is not part of the Volkswagen Group’s core business of selling cars with profit levels comparatively low to the four-wheel sector, selling Ducati now could give the firm some much needed capital. Ducati has seen enormous investment in R&D and from the Volkswagen Group since that 2012 takeover, with bikes like the massively popular Scramber, Ducati Panigale 1299, Multistrada 1200 Enduro and Monster 1200 all products that owe their birth the injected funds from Germany. As a result, Ducati is in the best financial position of its life, another reason Volkswagen might sell to guarantee a large return on investment.

‘Grizzly’ Sets New World Record on His Victory Cross Country Tour Via Victory Motorcycles
V
ictory Motorcycles® announced that Swiss endurance rider Urs “Grizzly” Pedraita has achieved a new world record by riding across five continents in less than 120 days aboard his Victory Cross Country Tour. He covered roughly 47,390 miles in 72 riding days and 13 hours by the time he reached a celebration in his honor at Volusia Motorsports in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., on July 10. The previous record for such a ride was 120 days and 2 hours, and included time-stops for transfers. Grizzly’s overall time without time-stops was 119 days and 21 hours. Grizzly rode away from Daytona International Speedway on March 12. His trip included traveling to, through and all points in-between; Central America, South America, Australia, South Africa to Egypt, Spain, Norway, MoscowRussia, South Korea, Thailand, Alaska, Canada and back to Daytona Beach, Florida Time and position measurement for Grizzly’s record-setting ride were done via GPS and satellite tracking. Timing was not stopped on overland routes (i.e., when waiting to pass a country border or when the rider is sleeping). However, timing was stopped for air and sea transfers between continents and restarted once the bike arrived on the new continent.

t's the heart of summer with long nights, beautiful weather, and bike nights abound. This time of year not only brings more cars and motorcycles to the road, increasing your chance of an accident, Marcos Garza it also brings out more police. As you take your ride out, remember to be vigilant for yourself and others around you. Nothing will mess your night up faster than an encounter with police, or an accident, which go hand in hand. Let's say you go out to an event and have a few drinks. You feel fine, but on the way home you get pulled over for your license plate light being out. Before you know it, you're sitting on the side of the road with an officer asking you questions about where you're coming from and if you had anything to drink tonight. A few field sobriety tests later and you're on your way to jail.
How do you avoid this unfortunate situation? The best way is to not drink and ride. However, if you have something to drink, you can always call a cab or an Uber to take you home. Your ride will be where you left it in the morning, and even if it does get towed, a tow bill is far cheaper than a DUI. If you do happen to get pulled over after a few, remember that you have the right to remain silent and have a lawyer present before you answer any questions. Another common and unfortunate event that happens frequently during the summer is more and more people get into accidents. Think about most bike nights, there are lots of bikes in a congested area. The last thing you want to happen is an accident with a fellow rider or a car two to three times your size.

There is only so much you can do to avoid an accident, but if you're vigilant and watch your surroundings, it'll go a long way to help you arrive at your destination safely. Use your headlights, brakes, and signals; let drivers know you're there. The biggest problem for bikers is that drivers don't see them, resulting in an accident. A vigilant rider watches his surroundings to watch out for the careless driver. What happens if you get into an accident? Call the police to report an accident, let the operator know if there are injuries, trade information with the other person, don't admit fault or place blame, cooperate with the investigation, and call your insurance company. It's important to keep your insurance upto-date, carry full coverage with uninsured motorist coverage, and don't carry just the minimum policy limits. In recap, the best way to avoid an unwelcomed encounter with police is to make sure all your lights work, don't speed, run a red light, etc., and don't drink and drive. If you do drink, get a ride home. The best way to avoid an accident is to be vigilant and watch your surroundings. Following these few tips will help you have a safe and fun summer of bike nights. Marcos Garza is the owner of the Garza Law Firm, PLLC, a Tennessee Law Firm dedicated to the full service of motorcyclists, bikers, cruiser and crotch rocket riders across the state.
