Greetings Southern Biker Magazine Readers, My heart is heavy as I write this. Today is the day after the school massacre in Connecticut where 20 innocent children and six adults were murdered. Over the past 24 hours, I have counted my blessings and shared many postings on Facebook encouraging everyone to tell your loved ones how much you love them every day, not just when a tragedy occurs. Put away grudges and mend fences. This country needs to go back to respecting one another, bring God back into our schools and justice systems. Those are the most important places where He is needed, especially now! As parents, our job is to instill upon our children the meaning of morals, responsibility, faith and love. Nurture them, be a positive role model for them. My heart is aching for the families who lost loved ones. I think about the Christmas gifts under the tree with the deceased children's names on them that will never be opened. So much grief and mourning to come and deal with for those families and the emergency personnel whose job is to process the crime scene and see the little bodies lying motionless on the ground. I cannot fathom what would possess anyone to do this evil deed. I pray for healing and comfort to this nation. These words came to me yesterday as I listened to the news and I wanted to share them with everyone: May the goodness and love of many overcome the evil and hatred of the few. Gibbs Quadski: The BMW Powered AllTerrain Vehicle By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

hy would anyone want an ATVJet Ski combo vehicle? Well, there’s lots of reasons that come to mind; save on garage space or rented space to park them, multi use when you go camping or hunting, etc. But some would want one because it’s just dang cool! GIBBS Sports Amphibians took a BMW K1300 engine and wrapped it with engineering marvels, four wheels, water jet powered thrusters and a good looking outside and BAM; the ﬁrst Quadski to hit the mass market. The Quadski rides like a normal ATV on land with all the shocks and steering needed. Drive into the water, push a button and the wheels retract and power is transferred from the rear differential to the water jet propelled thrust in an instant. The 175 horsepower BMW K1300 engine from BMW Motrand allows the Quadski to get up to 45mph on land and water. It’s the second generation of BMW Motorrad’s inline water-cooled mo-

torcycle engine and is considered the lightest power plant in its segment and features electronic fuel injection, a double-overhead camshaft and dry-sump lubrication. Previously, no commercially available sports amphibian on the USA market has been able to exceed 10 mph on water. The difference is the breakthrough GIBBS patented High Speed Amphibian (HSA) Technology provides unique on-water performance. GIBBS Chairman, Neil Jenkins said GIBBS has spent more than 18 months and over 75,000 engineering man hours to pair BMW Motorrad’s powertrain with the Quadski’s high-tech amphibian systems. “We consider this engine to be the most technologically advanced, lightweight engine available today and ideally suited to power a High Speed Amphibian,” said Jenkins. “We are especially pleased to be working with BMW, a premium vehicle manufacturer known throughout the world for product quality and engineering excellence.” Gibbs has been developing amphibious vehicle technology since 1996, spending $200 million and accumulating over 300 patents. This

form of new transportation will not come cheap. Gibbs has not finalized the price, but we can estimate that the Quadski will cost somewhere in the ballpark of $35,000 to $40,000. It’s very first rendention won’t be for the meek at heart, but obviously will represent the high end of expensive toys for the upper middleclass and beyond. When it goes on sale in the US, the Quadski could be the first amphibious vehicle to sell in significant quantities. Gibbs has dealers lined up in Florida, Texas, New York, and the Midwest. Alan Gibbs, the founder of GIBBS Technologies said, “Quadski is both exciting and practical with a multitude of uses. I know consumers will love the fun of driving a Quadski on land one minute and then head straight into the sea or river the next. But there is a very serious side to Quadski as well: emergency services and aid workers will be able to reach areas and people no two- or four-wheel drive vehicle could reach.” It could be a new niche the market has never seen and with that, it may just be the hit GIBBS has been looking for. onda has unveiled their six new models for the upcoming 2013 year and several returning models. Excitement is hitting an all time high with the new models, especially with the new Goldwing F6B. “This most recent release of wide-ranging brand-new models along with returning favorites is really exciting news for all riding enthusiasts,” said Powersports Press Manager Bill Savino. “The six new models we’re introducing today in the U.S. include ﬁve all-new motorcycles that represent some very innovative thinking on the part of Honda’s engineers and product planners, and they all bring their own distinct appeal to separate portions of the market. The CBR1000RR Superbike design comes with racing inputs and research. It comes in Red, Repsol Edition or White/Blue/Red and C-ABS model available in Black with pricing starting at $13, 800.

2013 Honda CB1100

The CB1100 brings back the looks of yester year and the engineering and reliability that are Honda. The timeless look retains its own following and with its1140cc aircooled DOHC engine, the rider has both nostalgia look and high performance. The twin-shock rear suspension and 18-inch wheels add to the classic bike look but give it a more reliable and comfortable ride than its older predecessors. My Great Cross Country Ride

he morning of October 12, 2012 was the beginning of an adventure that I have waited a lifetime to undertake. I awoke that morning feeling an anxiety and a tightening of my stomach as I rose from the bed at about 6:00 am. It had been several weeks earlier that Morris had mentioned that he would be attending a reunion of his military unit in Las Vegas and that he and his wife, Pam, would be leaving sometime in mid to late October. I asked if he would like a motorcycle escort. Of course there was no chance that I might be making that trip with him, but it was a nice fantasy. Morris and I met while serving for the US Army in Germany in the late 1950s on the West German/Czechoslovakian border. We became good friends and remain so to this day. Moe, as his military comrades called him, has shown his devotion to our friendship time and time again. The most memorable was the time when he returned home from a full year in a Tokyo hospital after being wounded during an action in which he was involved in Viet Nam. Morris was presented the DSC, and is now a retired Command Sergeant Major. Upon returning to his home in Louisville, KY, with his right arm held upwards in a cast and brace, he got into his 1964 Ford Falcon and drove to my home in Fountain Valley, CA to spend some recovery time with me. It was on August 6, 1967 that my Father, who was living in Cherry Hill, NJ, called to inform me that my brother, Fred had been killed! He ﬂew an F-100 Super Sabre. I told my Father that I would be on the next ﬂight out of LAX to Philadelphia. As my wife at the time, and I drove out of the driveway, Morris followed. We were on our way to the airport and Morris was on his way back to Louisville, KY., driving with one arm. Fred’s funeral was to be the following Thursday. Wednesday afternoon, Morris showed up. He had driven home to Louisville, changed his underwear, grabbed his uniform and headed for NJ. We stood together as my brother was laid to rest. After some weeks of tossing it around, tongue in cheek, I thought she was just kidding around when Mignonne said, “If you really want to go, go ahead.” I asked, “You

mean its ok with you if I ride my motorcycle to Las Vegas”? She said, “Yes”. Wow! I had parental permission. One more item on my bucket list could be crossed off. The starting date was based on his requirement of being at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas by the 18th. The morning of the 12th, I was packed up and on the way. My luggage pack fit nicely on the passenger seat and the side boxes were filled with various necessities such as additional sweater vests, and road safety items. I had flares, red light blinkers, bungee cords, a couple of granola bars, extra gloves, a ski mask, goggles, and some extra cold weather protection. Also various medical supplies should I have a medical problem in the middle of nowhere. My other concern was what if I had a flat tire or other mechanical problem somewhere on the prairie. Oh well, here goes! SKU and I were off. It was chilly, but not too cold. I did not feel it was so cold that I had to put on my chaps. It was about 50+ degrees and my adventure had begun. Aside from the stops for fuel about every 160 or 180 miles it was clear road ahead. I headed down I-40, past Nashville and on towards Memphis. My first stop for the night was West Memphis. I believe it was a Motel 6. I felt guilty enough about spending all this money for a joy ride, and that I was going to try to keep the cost down as much as possible. I did not sleep well that night and I even thought about turning around. I called Mignonne, My wife, and told her of my anxiety and she said, “Don’t you dare”! The next morning, I was up at 6 and on the way by 7:30. About 8:00 I saw a Waffle House and decided to get some breakfast. This is pretty much the way most of the trip went. I called Mignonne at many stops, also every evening and every morning. After about another 500 miles, my next stop for the night was Oklahoma City, Ok. That afternoon, I rode into downtown Oklahoma City as I wanted to pay my respects to the memorial there for the 167 folks that lost their lives in the Oklahoma City bombing of the Federal Building. That night was spent in another cheap motel, then again, about 8:00 am, on the road. My next stop was Albuquerque, NM. The weather was holding, still chilly, and now I was wearing my chaps. I could see the storms ahead and as I headed into Albuquerque. The streets were slightly flooded

and I was riding through up to 2 inches of water. The storm had hit ahead of me but I missed it. My next stop was Williams, AZ. All the while so far, I had been in touch with Morris as he stayed about 100 to 150 miles behind me. He and Pam would pull into the rest stops, and stop at Wal-Mart to pick up groceries, and for Morris to make his coffee and pee stops. Each night I would call them to tell there where I was and ask where they were. It was comforting to know that they were behind me so if I had a problem, they would be coming along. Along the way, somewhere out there on the road, I noticed a large bus motor home coming up on me. I was going 75 or 80 so it was moving about 85 or so. As it approached me as if to pass, it just stayed right beside me. I didn’t even look at it as I was a bit nervous watching the road and fighting the wind turbulence. He or who ever was driving just stayed beside me for quite a while. I finally got a bit pissed, so I backed off and just let him go. Later, I stopped for fuel and a pee break when I noticed that my left side box was open and the caps, gloves, face shield, and other assorted things were gone. It became evident to me that the person/s in that bus were trying to tell me that I had littered the highway with my belongings. I’m sure they were trying to do a good thing. Just east of Flagstaff, I saw the turnoff towards the Meteor Crater, so I made my second side trip. About 6 miles south of I-40 is the crater. I got a military discount so the cost to go up to the rim was $13.00. I had seen it from the air before but this was my first time to get a look up close. Then it was on to Williams, AZ. Williams, an old cowboy town was fascinating. Each evening, they hold a “shoot out” in the center of town. Every day, at 9:30, the train would pull out for a 2 hour trip to the Grand Canyon. My Great Cross Country Ride

the luxury seat in the dome car. Now, I had a hankering for a good dinner of prime rib and a baked potato, so I rode into town to see if I could ﬁnd a steak house. But then, to what would my wondering eyes should appear, but a Jack in the Box. Wow! 4 tacos and onion rings later, I was full. I didn’t feel too good that evening, but I was a happy camper. The next morning, at 9:00 am, I was at the fake façade of an old western town to watch the shoot out put on by 4 “cowboys”. At 9:15, we boarded the train and at 9:30 am sharp we pulled out. It was a beautiful 2 hour trip through the mountains to the Grand Canyon. Then later that afternoon, back at the train, and we were on our way back to Williams. About 15 minutes before we reached town, I saw out the left side of the train, 4 cowboys, wearing masks, riding horses along the side of the train. The train slowed to a stop and the “bandits” boarded the train and proceeded to rob the passengers. It was really fun. I had a light dinner. The next morning as I approached Hoover Dam the road split. As I crossed over the bridge, I pulled off into a parking area and walked back along the bridge, testing my fear of heights. I had noticed people walking along the bridge as I rode by and decided to take a look. The sight was amazing. Several hundred feet below you could see the dam

and Lake Mead. The cross winds were pretty rough, but it was well worth the stop. Later, I rode through Henderson, on to 515 North, and then off on Summerlin Parkway and I was at Bob and Andi’s house. I stayed with them for the next 4 days. The movie Argo was just being released and since Bob had played such an integral part in the actual rescue operation, he was getting all sorts of accolades from the media. Morris showed up that evening on the 24th. The next evening, was the banquet. This was a Special Forces reunion and I was honored to be among them. The next morning I was on my way home. I decided to take the southern route as I was concerned about the weather to the north. Left Vegas, to Kingman, then Hwy 93 to Phoenix where I picked up I-10 heading towards Tucson. Texas speed limit is 80 mph, so I set the cruise control, sat back against my luggage and enjoyed the view. Just west of Midland, TX, I picked up I-20 which would take me to Birmingham. That was my last night on the road as the next morning I picked up I-59 north to Chattanooga, the I-24 around Chattanooga, the I-75 north to Knoxville and home. Before I close this I wanted to mention that the ride across the prairie was wonderful. In a car it would be boring as hell, but on the bike it was truly amazing. I passed through New Mexico early one morning to see the most fantastic sun-up you can imagine. Bright red sky as the sun began to peek

over the horizon. I could see for miles in every direction. I regret that I did not stop and take a picture of that sight. My trip was an unbelievable adventure. I thank Morris and Pam for watching my back. I thank my lovely wife Mignonne for giving me the freedom to take such a trip and I thank God for keeping me safe.

2012 Biker Build Off, American Chopper “The The Revenge”

he Discovery Channel wanted to boost their ratings and do their version of the biker build off #2 in front of the Discovery Channel’s fans who watch American Chopper and the Fast N’ Loud shows. The new build off also drew in several thousand other motorcycle and gear head watchers from around the world. The competition in Las Vegas this year included Discovery Channel’s show stars Paul Teutul, Sr. of Orange County Choppers, Paul Teutul, Jr. of Paul Jr. Designs, Jesse James of Outlaw Garage and the Fast N’ Loud dudes, Richard Rawlings and Aaron Kaufmann. Now to start off, everyone knows the building capacity of the first three in the group, but the Fast N’ Loud guys, they buy old cars, fix them up and flip them or if it’s too much work, call some buddies to come buy what they found, so they were an unknown for the event. Let’s understand something first, a “Bike Build Off”, that would seem to state, you build the bike, not restore one or tear one apart and rebuild it to something else. A bike build competition is just what it says, build your best bike and bring it to the competition. That being said, the Fast N’ Loud guys should have been disqualified from the get go. They didn’t make their bike, they took an old Harley Davidson touring bike, tore it down and made some semblance of a Sportster out of it. In this writer’s opinion, they destroyed a really nice antique Harley and as Paul Sr. stated, “They should have just did a restoration on the old guy.” There’s more to this and we’ll get back to that at the end of this article. Jesse James went out of his comfort zone and built a HOG inside of the body

of a sport bike. With all the extras that he added and hand built parts that were on the bike, he truly built his bike and brought his best to the show. But he was late getting it completed, weeks late. That played in part to the voting of the fans. Paul Sr. and his crew brought their creation to the ﬂoor and it was a heck of a lot more impressive this year. Bringing that bike and with the new tech that was put into it, they deﬁnitely built a bike that was in the running for the top spot. Lastly, Paul Jr. and his crew brought their A-Game to the table this year. I thought they lost the competition last year and Jesse won it. But this year, they went out of their way to build a bike to not only pleased the voting motorcycle fans, but the hot rod fans that would be watching from the Outlaw Garage and Fast N’ Loud fans. The voting went as follows: Jr. 58%, Fast N’ Loud 20%, Jesse 13% and Sr. 9%. (One poll source)

Several reasons went into the voting or not getting the votes; Jesse being late, Sr. being a little late himself, the majority of the people voting were American Chopper show fans, many new voters were Fast N’ Loud show fans, popularity of the builders and many more. During the ﬁnal show where the votes were counted, several altercations between Jesse James and Richard Rawlings nearly rolled over into a brawl (if not for the security folks) and even prior at their Hard Rock Hotel. The show had to be bleeped during several verbal exchanges between the two which made from some great preﬁght trash talk. But I had my money on Jesse if it ever broke out. The show ended with Paul Jr. Designs defending their title and staying true to my word, the winner would make the cover of the January edition. I give big ups to Paul Jr. and his crew. You guys brought out a great build. And now, the rest of the story: Here’s

the unknown story involving the Fast N’ Loud dudes. They were looking for something to restore/rebuild and could not find the one they wanted without the help of the owner of the Wheels Through Time curator in North Carolina, Dale Walksler. He turned the show dudes onto Pam & Jeff Huggins of Biker Rags in Knoxville, Tennessee who happened to have quite a collection of antique and vintage motorcycles themselves. The couple rarely if ever sold the bikes in their collection, but seeing that their business might benefit from on air mentioning and guest appearances (as the show usually does), they made an exception and agreed to sell the 1967 Harley-Davidson FLH (Pan-shovel or Generator-shovel) known as FRED to them in September of 2012. The show needed the bike as soon as possible and Pam & Jeff soon found out the promise of being on TV and mentioning their business on air was not going to happen. Even worse, they found out that the show was going to say that the bike was bought from a local Texas individual so they could film it for the show being bought and purchased. Being the good

stewards that they are, Pam & Jeff began an email campaign about the truth. Somehow, some way, Richard Rawlings got the email in hand and called the couple. He explained (as he back peddled) that he would mention Biker Rags and the couple as the former owners of FRED. Well, if you saw the show, they didn’t mention the couple or their business. Not only that, Kaufmann announced that they would keep the name FRED for the bike but it would now stand for, “(expletive) Ride Every Day”. Oh well, most TV reality shows like Fast N’ Loud are staged and this was just another example of sensationalism for a buck.

After hearing this story, I just wanted everyone to know the truth about where the bike came from and the story of Pam and Jeff Huggins, who having hindsight now, would have never, sold them the antique touring Harley bike to destroy like they did. And thus, they would not have had that bike, at a “Bike Building” contest.

2012 North Georgia Toy Run

hat a great day it was to enjoy over 1,000 motorcycle riders as we rode in the 32nd Annual North Georgia Toy Run. The ride began from the Kroger parking lot on GA Hwy 21 in Macedonia to a stop at Cherokee County Moose Lodge and ending at the Georgia Mountains Hospice. Every rider and passenger donated toys that beneﬁtted the Jasper Lions Club, “Fill A Stocking.” The police escort was outstanding and the ride went off without a hitch. Many children will beneﬁt from the toys collected and an extra smile will occur on their faces from the generosity of these riders.
