words from the publisher
Hey Folks, Summer is officially here! Terry Mapes, Joe Ball, Randy Gracy, myself and many others went on the Concerns Of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) Run benefit ride which left from Knoxville, travelled to Ooltewah to meet up with additional riders, then to Manchester to meet up with more riders, then to Mount Juliet where we enjoyed festivities and A/C! Then we rode back home to Knoxville, all in one day! It was a long day but had a great time riding with some great people for a great cause. We always look forward to this ride. We've welcomed a new granddaughter to our family. Anna Beth Douthit arrived into this world on May 22, 2013 to my son, Chad Douthit and his lovely wife, Marie Douthit. She weighed in at 6 lb 15 oz. She is a precious bundle of joy and I can't wait to spend time with her and spoil her! The delivery was challenging for Marie (and Chad) and nail biting for all of us waiting on news! I am so proud of my son and his wife for being great and loving parents. Congratulations to the new parents! FACES Ride 4 Smiles
Riding for Kids with Facial Disorders
By Hippy Chick, Kim Teems
T
he National Craniofacial Association, www.faces-cranio.org, FACES helps children and adults with craniofacial disorders ranging from disease, accident or birth. FACES Ride 4 Smiles is in its 8th year and I ride as well as work the ride. It’s always an adventure and you never know how it’s going to turn out. Here’s the day from my view. The alarm goes off early on Saturday, June 1st, FACES Ride 4 Smiles Day. My first destination will be to pick up FACES Client Alison Midstokke, who was born with a facial difference. She came down from New York City just to ride in our event. We had an early appointment with WRCB TV3 Weekend News to be interviewed about the ride! My part was short and sweet about the ride, FACES and how I met Alison. Then Alison stole the show with her glowing inspiration to be all you can be no matter what dis-

ability you have. Next we head to breakfast to meet Alison’s official ride for the event, Jack Wallace. After introductions, good conversation, and food it was time to get the poker run started. Jeff King joined the group and we headed to Thunder Creek Harley-Davidson for the beginning of Ride 4 Smiles. The parking lot is rumbling with activity. The Department of Derailmentz Derby Gals in colorful getups whiz past bikes; the Local 820 Firefighters - Squad 7 pull in; and motorcycles fill the lot. Young volunteer Maggie Sims, who was born with a facial difference, guided bikes to their position and photos were made. Hippie Radio DJ John Bear Thomas was there with “Keith Edward” aka Joey Porter, former Chattanooga DJ, who rode from Atlanta to ride and emcee for Ride 4 Smiles. The first stop took us to a shop called Stroker Cycle. Alison was introduced again and again and I’m sure her head was spinning, but she posed and smiled and chitted and chatted and had a great time with the biker crowd. I do believe she is born to be one of us! Next was lunch at The Texas Roadhouse where they spoil us rotten each year. Andy Armadillo hitched a ride with Troy Smith and
this year Andy managed to keep his head on. I talked to Chuck Cunningham who had brought a group of riders from Nashville, even though afternoon storms were predicted. True to biker spirit he said, “If it rains - we’ll get a room and enjoy Chattanooga.” The day was clear and beautiful when we took off to stop three and four: Chris White’s Underground Customs and Jack A’s Chop Shop Saloon, but soon we were on wet pavement just missing a big shower ahead of us. It wasn’t long before the sky was black again, rain started coming down and we had to seek refuge under a parking garage. The next two stops were Chattanooga Custom Cycles & Collision and The Hogs Pen, which were packed with bikers from the ride. After a quick first aid to “Mayhem” (Tabitha Beachboards 250 Chopper) we head towards the end stop, Mellow Mushroom where the event is in full swing. Keith and John entertained the crowd with a hooping contest, live auctions, and lively banter. Silent auction items lined the room and goodies were to be had. John Eckhardt who had ridden with his buddies, Gant Flaming and Cameron Brumbaugh, made a 2,132 mile round trip to Ride 4 Smiles this year to present FACES with an $8000 check from the 12th Annual FACES Rally Ride in Upland, July, 2013

etting there the day before the Rally was supposed to begin; I began to see campers in a new cleared field next to the original sites. Yep, it was gonna be a big time in Tellico Plains. Wednesday night had its VIP party which has become an extra day party. Hundreds were there early and took advantage of some great music. I set up the next day at my usual spot (up front next to the bridge going to Dickieville) as directed by TBR organizers Mike, Wes, Mick and Wayne. Helping me out for the rally was the Road Dog, Bill Grant and Mo.
Scooter Shine Light vendors, food vendors, leather vendors, parts vendors, charity organizations, a tattoo vendor and more covered vendor row. Bill Grant grabbed the SBMag Megaphone, hopped on the wobble wagon and began MC’ing the event getting everyone involved in riding, games and rally stuff. This year there were a few new things to do. One was the Southern Biker Magazine Catch & Release Fishing Tournament. About 16 contestants came with fishing rods armed and ready for the challenge that began Saturday morning at 8am. By the 10am buzzer, fishing was over and four folks won 1st & 2nd place awards of most fish and largest fish caught. Thunder Beach Rally 2013 I
f the weather could have been any worse, it would have been a hurricane. The rains came and you would have thought, rained out all the fun, but not so. Breaks in the weather helped some of the events go on as planned and some of us went ahead and road in the rain. From one end of the beach to the other, thousands of people got out and enjoyed the Thunder Beach Rally festivities. Lots of great concerts and vendor sections were all over the area. Spinnakers, Club Lavela, Hammerhead Fred’s, Whiskey’s Saloon, Wicked Wheel, the Pier Park and others welcomed motorcycle riders from all over the country. The big news for the area was the grand opening of Harley Davidson of Panama City Beach. From the ribbon cutting to the VIP party to all the vendors around the dealership, the new dealership stayed packed and lots

Bob “Ranger” Locke Memorial Ride
ob “Ranger” Locke lived his life in the purest sense of protecting people and helping the needy. He didn’t just talk the talk, he walked the walk. Bob had a long list of organizations he was a member of; US Army Rangers, Putnum County Sheriff’s Deputy, Algood Police Dept, Blue Knights and list goes on. His passing last year left some missing his way of life and his walk in life. Friends got together and organized his memorial ride, not just to have one, but to help someone, a local cancer victim struck down with this terrible disease, Allie Clyburn.

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy The ride began and ended at Boswell’s HarleyDavidson where lunch was provided by the host. Several riders talked of Bob and laughed as we celebrated his times with many of us. I met Bob through the Blue Knights as I found him honest and boastful, full of life and always a smile for me. I will miss him and very glad friends came together to continue good works in his name.

Classic/Collector Car & Bike Show T
Sterlin Marlin & SBM Rep Michelle Yancy.
By Michelle Wagner
hree days of antique cars, motorcycles and hot rods came to Chattanooga, Tennessee at the Chattanooga Auto Auction facility. During the three days at the 55-acre facility, folks could buy, sell, trade and come to look at some of the coolest cars and motorcycles from as far back as the 50’s and all the parts to build or fix them. There were many vendors as well from both auto and motorcycle industries. I was excited to get to meet former NAS-
CAR driver Sterlin Marlin and how down to earth he was and how easy it was to talk with him. Custom builder and painter extraordinaire, Gary Stroud, brought out his 3 wheel creation that garnered a lot of attention. The bike show had several participants and the Best of Show received an extra $500! What a great weekend of covering the event and a big thanks to the organizers and event staff that made me feel welcomed and treated us like a VIP.

Raci Babi Product Review
ounder of Raci Babi products in 2005, Anna Hood, developed her signature product “Diva Do” after frustrating searches on the internet and not finding the solution to her problem with long hair getting knotted up and tangled while riding her motorcycle. She created and patented the Diva Do. No more tangles and knots; just beautiful hair every time you stop. She also developed “Wick-it” for short hair; it provides a breathable layer between your helmet and your hair/skin. Their ability to wick moisture, but not absorb essential hair oils virtually eliminates flattening and matting, banishing “helmet hair” for good! Her products are perfect for motorcyclists, snow skiers, snow boarders, boaters, off road enthusiasts, convertible cars, hiking, running, snorkeling, scooters, horseback riding and more! Prices range from $10-$30 and many colors and patterns available to match your whim. She also offers neck warmers and Neck-it products. She is constantly receiving feedback from customers and looking for ideas for new products to make your motor sports and outdoor adventures more fun! My hair is very long and thick. When I rode my motorcycle, it would get knotted up. The little whispy ends would

By Kristin “Ms Mag Man” Gracy sneak out of my helmet, batter my face and neck to the point that I demanded stopping to take a break and tuck those rascals back under my helmet. That made others riding with me (usually guys who don’t understand) frustrated. I heard Anna’s story about riding on the Dragon in NC, taking off her Diva Do when she stopped and hearing this women ask “Where did you get that?!?!” Anna was taken back by the woman’s approach and explained to her how to get one. The woman had probably gone through the same frustration women (and guys) with long hair deal with while riding. I received my Raci Babi Diva Do from Anna and tried it out. I LOVE MY DIVA DO! It took some practice to put it on and now I can put it on quickly and be ready to go at the same time (or sooner) than my riding partners. It slides easily out of my hair when I want to take it off. NO MORE TANGLES OR KNOTS IN MY HAIR. My hair used to have split ends from being broken off trying to untangle it, but not any more. My hair is healthy and strong. Visit their website for more info www.RaciBabi.com. Visit their Facebook page to see a video of how to put on the Diva Do.

Hundreds of people showed up during the day for swap meet parts, vendor merchandise, Harley-Davidson accessories and clothing and of course the bike show. Seventeen classes in all were judged and compared by the customers and spectators alike. Judging was intense as some of the votes were mere points separating individual bikes. $100 cash prizes went to each class winner plus an award. Best of Show garnered $500 cash and an award. A great turn out on great day. Don’t miss next year’s event.

Food for Thought
by Barry Duncan Doodles BBQ Bistro There’s a great new BBQ place in town called Doodles. It’s located at 2515 Willow Point Way In Knoxville, TN (off Hardin Valley Rd). I hooked up with Coppertop and Rainman to check out the grub. Doodles offers some of the best wings I’ve had. 10 wings at $9 and they come hickory smoked with the sauce on the side. The meat is so tender, it falls off the bone. I tried the sampler at $19 which is 1/4 pulled pork, 1/4 ribs, 5 wings, BBQ beans and slaw. I was so full, I packed up the ribs for later. Rainman had the smoked bologna sandwich topped with cheese and onion and loaded potato salad for the side at $8. His moans said it was good! Coppertop went for the BBQ pizza at $8 which is a 10” crust with BBQ sauce, chicken and cheddar jack cheese. He threw on some jalapenos for kick. We never made it to the home style banana pudding so that means another trip. You can call in for bulk orders at 865-2813905. If you see smoke in Hardin Valley its Doodles BBQ Bistro.
Bacon Jam Featured Recipe by Chef John Morris 1 1/2 pounds sliced Bentons bacon, cut crosswise into 1-inch pieces 2 medium yellow onions, cut into smallish dice 3 garlic cloves, smashed and peeled 3/4 cup strongly brewed coffee 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar, or less to taste 1/4 cup maple syrup Directions 1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon, stirring occasionally, until the fat is rendered and the bacon is lightly browned, about 20 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to paper towellined plates to drain. 2. Pour off all but 1 tablespoon drippings from the skillet and reserve for another use. Add the onions and garlic to the skillet and cook until the onions are translucent, about 6 minutes. Add the coffee, vinegar, brown sugar, and maple syrup and bring to a boil. Cook, stirring and scraping up any browned bits from the skillet, for 2 minutes. Add the bacon and stir to combine. 3. Reduce the heat to a bare simmer and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the liquid almost completely evaporates and turns syrupy, 1 to 1 1/2 hours. 4. Let the bacon concoction cool slightly before transferring it to a food processor and pulsing until coarsely chopped. Spoon the bacon into individual jars or other resealable containers and refrigerate for up to 4 weeks.
