words from the publisher
Hello Readers & Riders,
The 2016 motorcycle season has officially begun with the 75th Daytona Bike Week. What a great time our staff and Randy and I had! It was the largest crowd we had ever seen at Daytona Bike Week. Two thumbs up to the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce and all the staff efforts and their partners for putting together such a tremendous event. Between all the venues, the restaurants, the things to do, the rides, the meeting of new and old friends...the atmosphere was purely phenomenal for every type of motorcycle rider. After all the hard work, my husband and I got to enjoy a couple of days of the beach and riding with friends around the Daytona Beach area.We are so thankful for what we have and the people we have met along the way of this journey folks call "The Motorcycle Life". Moving forward, we are looking forward to our next few events, the Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City where we'll be hosting the Best of the Beach Bike Show. We have custom made surfboard trophies this year along with two 6-foot custom painted surfboards for the Editor's Choice and the People's Choice (you can actually surf on them if you wanted to). We are also looking forward to the March Moto Madness Dual Sport Rally in Tellico, Tennessee; Leesburg Bikefest in Florida' Honda Indy at Barber Motorsports in Birmingham,Alabama; Barry's Outerbanks Bike Rally in North Carolina and many bike night kick-offs around the southeast. We hope to see you at one or several of these events. Please remember this year...SAFETY! It is our main goal to arrive alive back home to our loved ones. So, please watch out for yourself and others when traveling on two wheels and even if you're in four wheels. Motorcycle riders need all the help we can get when we're on the road.

Historic 75th Daytona Bike Week Breaks All Attendance Records By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
A
rriving on the night before Bike Week was supposed to begin, we were in bumper to bumper traffic from Jacksonville to Daytona. Yes, we knew this one was going to be big, and it was. I’m estimating over 500,000 riders came to participate in this great event and when the actual numbers come out, I’m probably way under it. I’m telling you, every place, every hotel every restaurant, every venue...every place was packed from sun up to wayyyyy past sun down. The 75th DAYTONA BIKE WEEK had arrived! Getting some good Zappi’s Italian Garden food in us and a good night’s sleep at our host hotel, the Dream Inn, we woke to a picturesque sun rise on the beach and 70 degree days. Well, I’m here to tell you, it doesn’t get any better than sunny days, warm weather, no rain, the beach and the 75th Daytona Bike Week. The Daytona 200 Race Week and Supercross kicked off Bike Week and continued until it was over. Every type motorcycle racing was there, except drag racing... and that may be next to be added. With our Media Passes provided by the great folks at DIS, we covered every race and then some. Several of the

pro racers left with SBMag Road Crew shirts to wear to the next event. Next, the Southern Biker Magazine Road Crew hit the roads to promote the Ladies Kristin Gracy with Michelle Smith Ride-In Bike Show and take in what this historic event had in store for us. We added some international flair again this year as our friends from Germany, Bernd & Suzanne Vollmers hung with us all week. And though we had a language barrier to overcome, we understood each other perfectly (most of the time). Again, it amazes me how motorcycle riding is also an international language of sorts. Every retail outlet had posters, banners and signs of all kinds... The Rossmeyers
“Welcome Riders”. This community opens up its arms and hosts one the greatest events anyone will ever ride to. Main Street, Daytona International Speedway with their huge new vendor and demo
area, Destination Harley-Davidson with Jester’s Live, Riverfront Park Beach Street and many other spots hosted thousands of vendors for the riders to enjoy. Top entertainers were in store for this year’s events; Charlie Daniels, Blackberry Smoke, the Marshal Tucker Band, Jasmine Cain, Buck Cherry, CCR, Black Label Society, Eddie Money, Molly Hatchet and so many more. There were too many to get to, but we managed. The Legendary Boot Hill Saloon not only hosted our Ladies Ride-In Bike Show, but hosted thousands of Main Street participants every day as they cranked up their entertainment inside and outside under the Big Top. Other venues we attended were the Broken Spoke Saloon, Iron Horse Saloon, Pub44, Saints & Sinners Pub, Dirty Harry’s, Full Moon, Daytona’s Last Turn, Finn’s, the Cabbage Patch and more! Even though we stayed a total of ten days, we didn’t get to see everything, but hey, there’s always Biketoberfest in October. The (continued on page 11)

Daytona Chamber Hosts Media Day at the Band Shell with Eddie Money Concert By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

hat better way to jump start the 75th Daytona Bike Week than to have Media Day on the beach at the Daytona Beach Band Shell, warm, sunny skies and then Eddie Money in concert? Now that’s a kick-off! The Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Bike Week Festival Task Force hosted the official press conference with lots of VIPs. Janet Kersey, Executive Vice President of the DRCC introduced local dignitaries one after another. Also on hand was Bill Davidson, great grandson of HarleyDavidson’s founder.

Daytona International Speedway & the 75th Daytona Bike Week By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
I
have been coming here to Daytona since I was too young to remember. Me at DIS in 1968 Daytona has always been like a second home to me and my family. DIS has been the center of most of those trips here and Me at DIS in 2016 the activities we did while here. This year was no different as DIS was taken over by motorcycle everything! We wasted no time after receiving our media passes and joined in the fun at the Honda Kickoff Party and met a slew of Supercross racers, their teams and lots of VIPs. Next up, a week’s worth of racing at DIS.
Tomac Pulls Off Win at Daytona Supercross By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy With only one podium for the 2016 season, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac dominated his heat race and then pulled in front of points leader and defending champ Ryan Dungey (Red Bull KTM) and take his first win of the season, with Dungey close behind in second and Marvin Musquin cruising in

for third. “This is huge,” Tomac said. “Even though this event is so unique as part of our Supercross series, this is the spirit the team needed to lift us up... I was able to get out there early with the start and just lay it down, and I was having fun on the motorcycle; that’s what counts, and it paid off in that main event.” Dungey’s second place was his 25thconsecutive 450cc Supercross podium finish, a Supercross milestone as it tied the all-time mark set by Chad Reed. With his second place finish Dungey extended his points lead by 39 points over Ken Roczen. Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart suffered a hard crash in his heat race. He was slow to his feet but did get back on the bike and rode back to the pits. He never returned. In the Eastern Regional 250SX Class, Yamaha rider Jeremy Martin took his first victory of the season. Fans were on their feet watching Martin and Malcolm Stewart battle for the lead for nearly the entire race. The final spot on the podium went to championship leader Martin Davalos. Daytona 450SX Results: 1. Eli Tomac (Kaw) 2. Ryan Dungey (KTM) 3. Marvin Musquin (KTM) 4. Jason Anderson (Hus) 5. Ken Roczen (Suz) Update: Dungey won the Detroit Supercross but was docked two positions for jumping under a medical flag giving Jason Anderson the win and Marvin Musquin second.
450SX Class Championship Standings 1. Ryan Dungey, Belle Plaine, Minn., KTM - 253 2. Ken Roczen, Clermont, Fla., Suzuki 214 3. Jason Anderson, Rio Rancho, N.M., Husqvarna - 200 4. Eli Tomac, Cortez, Colo., Kawasaki 186 5. Marvin Musquin, Corona, Calif., KTM - 178
47 Year Old Michael Barnes Wins 75th Daytona 200
By the Mag Man, Randy Gracy
Coming out of retirement Michael Barnes of Boca Raton, Florida wins the historic 75th Daytona 200 by Victory becoming the oldest winner in the events prestigious history. Barnes dominated the 53-rider field to win the custom 75th Daytona 200 trophy and DIS’s signature champion award, a steel-and-gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona watch. Gatorade Victory Lane erupted with champagne and tears as Barnes accepted his awards. “I’m kind of speechless and fumbling for words. All of the people who helped me… you know who you are. I just can’t thank everybody enough. This one is for quite a few people.” John Ashmead of Palm City, Florida set a DAYTONA 200 record for career miles complete, running 53 laps and breaking the record previously held by Ricky Orlando. Ladies Ride-in Bike Show Gives WOW Factor By Kristin Gracy
T
he only Ladies Ride-In Bike Show during the 75th Daytona Bike Week produced a large WOW factor. The custom made trophies were a sight to behold. The Legendary Boothill Saloon on Main Street hosted the event and ladies rolled in with their custom motorcycles from metrics to Harleys to V-Twins to Trikes and one very special ride. Karin Gehris and her staff at Boot Hill Saloon changed their layout just so the ladies could pull their machines in under the big top tent. Breast Cancer Survivor, Sharon Bernhard from the Daytona Beach CVB came to help out with event registration as she always does to come and support the beneficiary of the event, Breast Cancer Research. The SBMag Road Crew helped the ladies to park their bikes according to trophy voting and the ladies came into the tent area and did some extra cleaning while the judging was about to take place. Bikes from all over the country entered into the event; Maine, Connecticut, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Maryland, Texas and many other states were represented. Hundreds of Main Street event riders came to see the bikes and enjoy some Southern Biker Magazine hospitality. Victor Lima

from Tampa Bay Music Network emceed the event and did a tremendous job keeping the participants informed and the audience entertained. The ladies door prize winners that included a ladies Invicta watchs, Blue Tooth headseats, custom made jewelry, Raci Babi helmet liners, Deer Screamers and more. Louder applause came when the trophies began to be handed out. The loudest applauses came when the Robert Rivera Jr. custom painted 6-foot surfboard trophies were handed out for the Editors choice and the People’s Choice.
Don’t miss next year’s event at the 76th Daytona bike Week. It promises to be bigger and better with more unique custom trophies for everyone to enjoy!
Southern Biker Magazine is so proud to be able to bring this ladies only event to the shores of Daytona Beach. I started this event four years ago, wanting to put together a bike show just for women to showcase their beautiful motorcycles. Even at Bike Week, there wasn’t one. Women have their own stories too and some put that story on their motorcycle. At each Ladies Bike Show, I am more and more enthused about attendance and the motorcycles the ladies bring. that’s why this year, we went all out on the special surfboard trophies. We are so glad to be able to offer this original ladies bike show and look forward to watching in grow. We’d like to thank the sponsors for giving and donating to the event; The Legendary Boot Hill Saloon, Robert Rivera Jr. Custom Painting, AAA Motorcycle, Fountain City Jewelers, Hanging Dog Moonshine, Ms Mag Man’s Custom Jewelry, Ironhorse Trailers, Roar Motorcycles, Scootershine, Hoppe Inc., Zappi’s Italian Garden, Raci Babi, and Tellico Biker Rally. I
just had a great time in Daytona Beach with Randy and Kristin Gracy and the Southern Biker Team at the women's ride-in bike contest during the 75th Bike Week Celebration. Even though we were busy, it was fun to get to see everyone. I've judged this Bike Contest for a couple years and have judged a number of other contests. Through ROAR Motorcycles, I also helped design and customize motorcycles that won a number of trophies. Some people just like to ride and other people like to ride and show off their beautiful bikes. It's fun and when you've put a lot into your bike, it's nice to do that. There are two types of bike shows - professional and ride-ins. The difference the professional shows have bikes so valuable and/or unique in build that they are trailered everywhere they go. Local establishments and events often host ride-in shows. They are fun and designed for the non-professional. Anyone can ride their bike in and enter the show. So here's a few hints if
22 - Southern Biker Magazine
you're ever going to enter your bike in a ride-in show: This should be a no-brainer, but it should be clean. That means have a small bike kit with you to touch up your bike when you get there. Tires Tires - Tires - Make sure you get those white walls scrubbed, black the sides of your tires (don't get product on the part that makes contact with the road) and wipe down the exposed part of the tire with a damp clean rag. A spotless bike and dirty tires just don't go together. Chrome - get your chrome as clean as possible and do the extra work around your nuts and bolts. It's a pain but if you want to win sometimes the difference of one point is a little bit of rust around the bolts.
Before you bring it to a show, have someone who you respect, stand back and really look at it. Do your foot pegs really go with the bike? Or did they just come with it? Do your handlebar grips with fringe really match the color of your bike? Or did you get them for Christmas and they're close but not exactly? Have someone else give you their honest opinion. Personally, I like it when I can connect a bike to its owner. And I think it definitely helps for People's Choice voting when people get to talk to the bike owner. Their passion is contagious and they can point out features that a casual observer might miss. Just a few pointers but the most important one - have fun with it. You may know you don't have a chance of winning but you will always meet some great people and who knows? You might be surprised and come home with a trophy.

Motorcycle Theft Statistics Courtesy of the National Insurance Crime Bureau
T
he National Insurance Crime Bureau releases motorcycle theft statistics every year, most of which are pretty predictable. For example, California has the most thefts and the most recoveries, more Hondas are stolen and recovered than any other brand, and most of the thefts take place during the summer months. But just like any (fine, most) government-style report, there are some pretty interesting nuggets of info hiding inside. We combed through the latest report and assemble our top 10 stats, in Harper’s Index style, for you to chew on:
•
Percentage change of theft between 2013 and 2014 in Las Vegas: +29%
•
Percentage change of theft between 2013 and 2014 in Los Angeles and Indianapolis: -27%
•
Of the 1,973 U.S. counties identified, percentage of thefts that took place in the top 25: 31%
•
Percentage of stolen motorcycles in 2014 recovered through June, 2015: 41%

Number of motorcycles stolen nationally in 2014: 42,856
•
Number (and percent, nationally) of motorcycles stolen in California, Florida, and Texas in 2014: 13,610 (32%)

Sound Advice from Your Attorney
W
inter is over and spring is here, the weather is improving, flowers are blooming, trees are budding, and it's time for a refresher on Tennessee motorcycle laws. It's important to know the rules of the road before jumping on a bike and hitting the pavement because bikes aren't cars.
Marcos Garza
Tennessee's rolling hills, pristine flatlands, and Smoky Mountains are some of the best places in the country to ride and many riders love feeling the wind in their hair. Unfortunately, Tennessee requires drivers and passengers to wear a helmet. It may take some of the joys out of riding a bike, but it keeps a rider's most important part of the body safe, the noggin. If your bike doesn't have a windshield or your helmet doesn't have a visor then be sure to grab your safety goggles or impact-resistant glasses before hitting the road. This goes for your passenger as well. Bugs in your grill are one thing, but a bug, or even worse, a rock, in the eye could ruin your day.
Hobbies For Both: When we're not riding, we spend our time hiking, hanging out with friends on the lake and spending time with our beagle puppies

Now speaking of passengers. I'm sure you already know, but if you have a passenger on your bike, it must be equipped with two pieces of equipment: a passenger seat and footrest. Your passenger has to have a place to sit and a place to put their feet. The same also goes for you because dragging a foot or two across the pavement does not make for a pleasant ride. No one likes to ride alone. Riding with a group of fellow bikers is always better than ridiing by yourself. The question is how many bikes can you have riding side-by-side, one, two, three, or four? In Tennessee, two bikes can ride side-by-side in a single lane. However, you can't pass each other in that same lane, just ride sideby-side. It's all about keeping you and everyone else safe on the road. Just remember it's all about sharing the road and you have just as much right to be on the road as any other car, and if a car runs you out of your lane, and you or your passenger get hurt, be sure to call your friendly local attorney. Speaking of possibly getting hurt, be sure that your insurance is up-to-date and if you don't have insurance on your bike, be sure to get it, because riding without it isn't cool. In Tennessee, every motorcycle owner at least has to have minimum coverage, which the state defines as $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 for bodily injury involving multiple people in an accident, and $15,000 for property damage. Although, you'll find that for a few extra bucks a month, you can get a $300,000 single limits policy that provides you and your passenger substantially more protection. Remember, insurance doesn't just protect you; it protects your passenger and the people around you. Riding in a group has its own dangers, sudden stops, multiple bikes in close proximity, and other cars on the road. If you ride smart, use common sense, and obey the laws of the road you can add another trip to the memory books. Marcos Garza is the owner of Garza Law Firm, PLLC a Tennessee Law Firm dedicated to the full service of motorcyclists, bikers, cruiser and crotch rocket riders across the state.
